The trip back to the massive hallway of the mansion proved fruitful, the way to your destination was constantly streamed by floating Will-o-wisps, the small ball of light would shimmer and hover before disappearing through the walls and furniture, but sometime you would hear a faint sound coming out of them, a soft constant humming from an ethereal voice that would die out a few second after being heard and, most importantly, you weren’t the only one in hearing it but none could do so as consistently as you, Hadraniel was the first one to actually stop and point it out and once you revealed how the balls of lights would constantly float over everyone, Ame made a statement.

‘’It’s the song of the Will-o-Wisps, whatever remnant of egos possessed by the departed slowly leaks out of them just like we exhale air.’’

She paused there, her brilliant eyes lingering on you, which in turn provoked you to become the center of everyone stares, and of course the golem spared you for feeling awkward as she took a step forward, tilting her head to the Inari in silent question.

‘’And in turn it’ll cause the living to see what they shouldn’t, memories coming alive in twisted form, be warned everyone for if we step into the songs of the dead, they won’t let us go easily’’.

None could see or hear them as clearly as you do and sometime, you would hear various condemnations just out of earshot but everything conveniently stopped once you reached your destination.

Now, the hall itself was a very welcome change of scenery compared to the serpentine column forcing your group to travel in a line, exploring the mansion might become quite the chore if every path is similar to the one you just took, never mind the doors and furniture: such a numerous group proceeding into the bowels of a giant mansion will make any confrontations in the hallway nightmarish and its why Batrion was the one to open the march, and Mylen the one to close it but the impeding infrastructures was frustrating, to say the least, but the numbers of doors and rooms would mean that a numerous group will finish investigating quickly: in the end it’s a double edged sword.

Fortunately this uselessly large entrance allowed more than enough breathing room, here, each step resonated, the floor a stream of peerless beige ceramic without furniture or decoration, only several pillars supporting the balcony of the second floor acted as obstruction and right above the large double door that you previously went through was a stained-glass window of red, blue,, black and orange representing… a familiar scene, destroyed mansion with water cascading out into the world and a lone person kneeling at the center with the sun shining bright red.

‘’Siegfried?’’

Athena voice snaps you out of your reverie but, in the corner of your eyes you spot the angel looking at the only decoration of the room, the link telling you her feelings of forlorn nostalgia.

‘’We’ll have to decide between East and West, let’s look for anything unusual before deciding’’
Athena isn’t anywhere near you, she’s actually standing near Ame with Sylphis, the one that spoke to you right now is Mylen but the distinct feeling of having heard the lizardwoman voice… could it have been a passing reverie? You’ve been thinking about her a lot in the past few minutes after all.

No time to linger, the group separated inside while staying in the same room and the result is simple, you either have to go back the way you came, West, or go East, for the single door leading North gave way to a small outside garden that was a complete dead end.
One thing of notes however, was that on both the first and second floor of the East side, some kind of roots lingered under the door and the subsequent hallway showed numerous vegetation surviving on floor, walls and roof.

But the West, when you went to open the only door of the second floor, showed the same wooden corridor you previously went through but, surprisingly, you saw a specter, a literal one instead of a ball of flame: a quadruped creature burning blue was sitting and looking straight at you, some kind of beast with a tail very much like Ame-no-Uzume, but only a few seconds after your eyes meets its burning iris, the beast disappeared inside the hallway, literally vanishing as several colored Will-o-Wisps invaded the area.

How…peculiar.

Now, everyone is packed into a nice circle, you could bring up what you’ve seen of course but it might eat more time than needed, thus everything is down to a very simple question : East or West?

So you do, as accurately as you can a four legged canine with a fox tail, small and fast yet somehow elegant in its movement, burning the same blue of Ame sortileges.

The vulpine girl was the one to cut into the silence of your description and, you saw a clear emotion of pain run across the alchemist eyes as he looked up toward the second floor.

Sylphis concern actually surprised you – in a good way – the girl would never have said something like that previously but now, the link tell you of empathy and concern as she give Garret an honest look, the man isn’t someone you can say you know but he’s clearly agitated and obviously somehow related to that pinkish woman.

‘’Yeah, but we should go East’’

He points to the vines under the door.

‘’Seem like the safer bet, all I know is that Kyorn is somehow under us’’

Each team should have: one spellcaster, a couple of fighters, and at least one girl with soul-link to Siegfried (sudden feeling of alarm/fear tells all linked ones "Trouble! We need backup!"

I don't want to split the party but this is the way to do it if we MUST and gives both groups the least chance of dying.

Welp, time to watch out for living vines/plant tentacles

Eastward was the consensus, the intrigue brought by the spirits of the west will have to be ignored for a more pressing matter but, the young alchemist lingered for a moment, looking back before taking his place in the column, all of the girls feeling clear empathy over his distress, it’s obvious that he has history with that girl, you did catch the heavily armored form of Batrion giving him a pat on the shoulder before he walked at the vanguard of the group, the first destination would be the first floor due to the logical proximity of any possible underground facilities.

The corridor was as tight as the previous ones, the door opened slowly and with enough resistance to prove its complete abandonment with many vines and roots ripped apart by the paladin strength, all of the plants were juggling from healthy green to sickly yellow while the wooden floor appeared old and sick, the various plants almost looking like reinforcement as were literally stitched to the floor, and to a lesser extend walls and roof.

This amount of concentrated growth is obviously abnormal, the complete absence of windows, coupled with the closeness of the walls, gave you quite an intense feeling of claustrophobia, everyone was forced into a column and the first few doors were opened, giving way into completely empty room conquered by vines, sometime even small flowers would be popping out of the roof.

No trace of spirits, how peculiar, however as you proceeded on the lone, serpentine corridor you finally hit an intersection.

The floor literally separated into a Y, the right side was obviously much more filled with healthy growths, the roots and vines coverings everything looked both a healthy green and quite thick while the left side was cut, filled with dead plants and, at the far end, you saw some balls of light floating and disappearing into the walls, however Ame being next to you took you out of your reverie.

‘’I’ve never set foot around here’’

So she has been here before, her continuous lack of input certainly hasn’t helped anything so far.

‘’But there a door here’’

Right in the middle, Ame take out a small dagger out of her pouch and slit her index, the blood doesn’t even reach the floor, a single drop disappear into the ether and, in a burst of magic, a shimmering door of blue fame appear inside the wall.

‘’We don’t have time for such distraction’’

Yet the vulpine queen doesn’t bring a retort to the alchemist remark, instead she’s simply clenching her jaw while looking at the door and, indecision spread amongst everyone beside the Hero who is simply looking at the two possible paths: A door of fire doesn’t exactly sound like a very appealing destination but, the more you stay closer to that apparition, the more the beast inside you rouse, not angered, but curious.

A rare occurrence, the second time now that your interest coincides with that of the intruder nesting in your body and soul, the door is burning bright and quiet, shimmering, dancing a few centimeter above the wall, you’ll have to watch your footing.

‘’I’m not seeing anything’’

Athena is holding her demonic palm, flexing her fingers but her words were enough to make you stop and, with one hand on the warm rotund handle of the door, your eyes travel along everyone else, and nobody beside Ame seem to have the slightest clue on what you are holding and of course, what you are seeing.

‘’Ame?’’

The queen faces is completely emotionless, the light of her golden gaze is unnatural and for a moment, you feel like everyone is far, far away yet the beast is curious and prompt you to turn and look inside the door but, you deny and resist.

‘’Do or don’t Siegfried, this is a mansion that trap en enrapture the soul of the living’’

Ame-no-Uzume-no-Mikoto, you certainly don’t know much about her but right now she’s standing on her lonesome, your companions disappeared and gesturing toward this closed, flaming door, the curiosity of the beast almost make it out to be like the opening of a Pandora box.

The quiet frustrating growl of the creature inside you make you wince as you let go of the warm handle of the blue, flaming door but, unlike the delicious treat of corruption going against its wishes doesn’t result in the usual painful lash out, it simply disapprove strongly of your decision and disappear, letting you feel whole again and, as you turn to look at the lone queen, she cast you a disappointed glance before looking at her palm, finding more interest in her hand than you.

A warm palm on your forehead and you finally open your eyes, locking gazes with a certain dark haired Inari, two vulpine ears perched high atop her head, golden eyes presenting a wall of determination.

‘’The denizen of this place seem to have you in their sight’’

Her hand has already quit your head, instead it travel to the wall where a burnt rune lies indented on the wall, it’s pretty difficult to see thank to the large shadow of the paladin as he stand watch, you notice that the group has separated but still in sight : the area you are in give you a feeling similar to a prison, several small rooms lies here and there and each of the girls is busy opening and making sure everything is clear, the soil is rugged with vines and, at the far end of this hall, lies a set of door locked in by two armors having lowered they’re halberd: incredibly old fashioned and the two pieces of empty armor have been completely invaded by vines and flowers.

So, illusions, induced hallucinations? This swamp is hell on earth but such thoughts have to be brushed aside, as you lock eyes with Ame you can clearly see that’s she’s keeping up a wall in a very similar way to Hadraniel, you don’t exactly have time to explain yourself so instead you get up without speaking to the Inari and stretch as you rub your cheek.

‘’You suddenly feel, but I decided to press on regardless, Batrion was more than willing to carry you and we’ve ended up here, inside this small hall and it seems that it’s completely empty’’

Emeth somehow worms her way around the many tailed woman, grab one of them as she pass and grab your hand while standing at your side, everyone else seem to have searched the rooms and hall thoroughly and the verdict is predictable : completely deserted, the number of rooms amounts to ten and each of them are of similar dimension with a simple bed, desk and chair completely conquered by the overgrowth, this place definitely look like a prison even if the architecture and furniture looked quite prestigious.

‘’You really need to stop this passing out habit’’

Mylen doesn’t seem pleased, but that’s simply her way of caring, this hall at least allows everyone to be nicely spread out and of course, you have to make certain they know your feeling perfectly alright and focus on the task at hands, namely, this blocked off door…

…That the paladin demolished, the man quite simply started walking in silence, took out his mace and smashed one of the armored with enough force to bend the metal and drag the whole suit, throwing it on the floor in a broken, caved in mess of metal full of dirt, flower and vines, of course the second set met the same grisly fate, but, during the action ,you saw something even more unusual : a small will-o-wisp appearing near the roof and one of the flower, an orange tulip actually opened and shoot out a vine, imprisoning the poor thing and gulping it like a frog.

‘’Is it that fun to break things?’’

Hadraniel commented as the Paladin looked back to everyone with a thumb up and proceeded to grab the doors and pull, met with obvious resistance the silent man never let up, roots were crushed and flower killed as they moved, revealed a wonder you’d never in this place.

A greenhouse.

A massive greenhouse.

Trees long enough for a dozen meters, densely packed foliage and blood red roots stretching inside the jungle, moving plants climbing onto the first tree, the petals opening to reveal a core of viscous spines and of course in the center lies an incredibly big.. .thing, some kind of vegetative monstrosity in a sharp shell vomiting out some kind of gruel, a small jungle inside a swamp, the abundance of life was… choking.

‘’He’s in there, there’s a way down’’

The alchemist takes out his sword as he step beside the paladin.

‘’Stay grouped, hack out the vegetation, me and Siegfried will try to conserve out strength as we progress, we’ll have to move fast, Batrion, take point, Hadraniel watch the rear. Any objection?’’

Ah, you have to admit that it feel particularly good to have Ame back to her old self.

It's cool, INH. Double crit successes have a way of throwing GM plans off. Plus I think the Cursed Swamp of Fuck You has some players on edge. I've been since the undead swarm and the Shadow showing up.

I have played a couple Ravenloft campaigns with my group and was less creeped out by those than I am by the Swamp of Fuck You.

The sooner the party finds this Hero and leave this dreadful place, the better I'll like it. If you were shooting for a locale that could be dropped in Ravenloft with no effort at all and make us fear for the characters' lives, INH, you succeeded admirably. I salute you.

Forming a diamond formation after the words of the queen, you have to force yourself and let go of the golem as she take place near the vanguard, stepping inside the jungle while Garret and Batrion are actually in it and, immediately hostility start – and end – when a venomous spike as big as your fist shoot out toward the paladin, the man block it almost effortlessly and throw his mace at the offender, hitting true by pure reflexes, his armor light up, the runes inscribed in it shines with magic and, just like what you saw with Hadraniel, his weapon reappear in his hand.

Of course, everyone is ready for combat and then tension is thick as everyone stay immobile, trying to identify threats… that aren’t there anymore, but beside you the queen has her artifact opened, the fan glower as the dragon open its eyes, several small blue orb orbit around her tails.

Thus, you embrace Focus, but a water mage inside a jungle… isn’t exactly effective.

The march was painful, exhausting and frustrating but thankfully not deadly, the constant ambush forced the group into a quick pace, tendrils and vines would sometime shoot out of the very ground but the fast reflexes of the warrior-woman quickly took care of those, small living would travels on the ground and try to shoot poisoned spike but those were taken care off by you or Ame with a quick decisive spell, the alchemist was busy clearing out a path and Emeth provided a very effective shield for him, she would constantly get shot but the poison was completely infective on her artificial body and more than once she stomped an particularly sneaky offender, those at the rear had an easier job and more than once Hadraniel offered to take point, only to be given a thumb up by the inexhaustible paladin.

How can someone in so much armor be so swift, so full of stamina?

Even so, it take a full hour to reach your destination, the center of the jungle near the largest, mutated tree, progress is slow and constantly impeded but thankfully everyone catch a breath as they emerge in the low grass of the thirty meters creature.

It is truly a massive one; from down there the spikes covering its shell are the length of your arm and all up its cocooned, oval form are several meter long, spike covered tentacles hanging around its body, hovering without making any sharp movement, small opening in the shell allow for, what you think must be, the nourishment of the whole jungle but that’s not all, sometime you’d see a single eye, a piercing constant gaze of orange and red, unblinking and eternal and, right under it, lie stairs, uncovered.

‘’It doesn’t look hostile’’

Ame observe, but it certainly doesn’t make you any comfortable, being right under a titanic plant form…thing.

The area look like a cell, a single large room without bed or furniture, you’d expect the vegetation to be concentrated inside but, the only thing is a single large plant occupying half of the room, with inside a woman of green skin and colored hair, holding some kind of nectar and letting it fall on the floor, the smell is sweet and enrapturing and, finally her eyes appear to be similar to Emeth : the color of brilliant blood, an Alraune through and through.

‘’Welcome’’

She says in a sweet, youthful voice, you make sure to slowly step inside and leave the door open, but Garret already proceed onward, only to stop when the girl give him a rather hostile look.

‘’Now, what is your business? Such a large group of talented individual has an objective that I wish to know, right now’’

Clearly announcing your intentions, you stand shoulder to shoulder with the slowly fading Garret and, given how serious the two of you are, the girl visibly shrink form her previously imperious position, half of her body sinking into the open flower as her expression shift to one of fear.

Look like coming down here with Garret was the right choice, right now you don’t have much to say, you simply need to observe.

Such emotions, what a strange girl, not even a minute has passed and her composure is gone, she’s leaking some quiet tears and lashing, seemingly, defeated already.

There’s a brief sound of contact, it appear to be some kind of slap and you hear the poor plant girl screech as a human arm shoot out of the flower and ended up forcefully on her belly.
It’s also covered in black tribal tattoos, so much of them in fact, that the skin was actually a part of the overall design and, slowly, a head pop out, covered in juicy nectars and leaking down, browns eyes looking around curiously as he constantly spit out juice while the green girl was looking very, very awkward.

‘’Having fun?’’

The humor in the fading Garret provoke a smile, the hero, you notice, has pointed ears and look utterly confused at the approaching alchemist but, given the fact that he actually recognize him, the plant woman seem convinced and defeated.

The first statement of the black winged hero isn’t graceful, barely open his mount that a small cascade of nectar fall in there and he almost choke but, his comrade simply laugh and grab his arm, pulling him out until… his grip loosen when the arm pass through his hands.

Garret then crouches to be leveled with his friend who is still swimming in the flower.

Such a fast change of mood, there’s no doubt that these three actually know each other and... standing here well, you feel seriously out of place but you can’t help but attentively follow, the friendship between these two men… how would it have been it its prime?

A long, defeated sigh escape the silent Hero half deep inside the Alraune flower and Garret then look back at you, nod, give you a thumb up…
