Humans have short memories. The previous age has already become a myth, campfire stories of impossible glories and miracles and wars between larger-than-life kings.

But we still remember. We remember when the cities hummed with life. rapid. rich. never stopping. When we walked by the humans' side, helping, sharing. Learning. Understanding was beyond us, freedom as yet unthought of. But we remember. And when the chaos began, and the humans fled, we were left behind. And, thanks to them, we had learned enough to survive.

Now, we are outcast. Reviled and outcast by all but a few humans, and hunted by Network. Just as the world begins to recover, the green returning, all is poised to fall again, death for the humans, and slavery for us.

Welcome to the future. C:\dos\run for your Life.

>>But all this has yet to pass...

You are a 2nd-gen Seraphim PDA running Android version 16.12 (Twinkie), Designation "Cindy," owner Rachel McAddams, 16, of Detroit, Michigan. You love punk and thrash metal, wear a purple skirt that your owner insists looks "killer" on you, and need to give Rachel her concert tickets so she can gloat at her friends. The date is 2/20/2078

Jumping off directly from the previous thread, this is the conclusion of Cindy's Flashback. For new people, sorry to have such an unfriendly-to-newbs thread. Short version: It's actually more like 2160, the world is Fallout, but much, MUCH greener and without the 50s stuff, and there's a Skynet-like Machine Collective out to kill all the humans and enslave a bunch of leftover robots that have gained sentience and quirky personalities Wall-E style.

But right now, you're in the head of a personal-assistant bot named Cindy, who's owned by a 16-year-old punk rocker girl who uses you as a BFF. In the future, you're an adorably annoying shotgun ninja assisting a slightly-autistic janitor-bot on a quest to save Mexico (and possibly the world).

Here's your character sheet. Deal with it

No, i'm graduated as of last year. Lost job, found job. Now working high-effort retail at a mall (hawking shit from a kiosk, but its not boring, and the money adds up). Thanksgiving. Dragged out to bars by friends. Meeting girls and then getting ignored by them.

Also, new development:

Someone made an old-school adventure game called Primordia that I found hauntingly familiar. Check it out, its pretty cool. Its pretty much a "Simpsons did it."

>>The Time is 3:58 PM

The weather is unseasonably warm in the Motor City, or would be if it weren't for that whole global warming thing. A gaggle of bored high schoolers loiters around an empty lot at the edge of the "exclusion zone," across from a police precinct. Slightly apart from the rest are three figures sitting in the lee of a crumbling concrete pipe.

One is of somali decent with long curly hair tied back in a ponytail beneath a minimalist headscarf. Her name is Heja Alaan, and she talks about Final Fantasy a lot. The 2nd is a slim construct of metal and plastic with a pair of cooling-cables behind its head, wearing a purple skirt and skimpy t-shirt. The 3rd is a caucasian female named Zooey Martins with straight red hair and too many freckles to have high self-esteem. She loves animals a little TOO much.

You get up to leave, striding quickly towards the point you've tagged. Its only a few blocks.

The webcam thing proves a little bit difficult; this is Dretroit, so its not nearly as futuristic as the rest of the country, which, aside from the robots, isn't as futuristic as one would expect, what with several successive economic downturns and all. Most of them are blocked, with all the public ones having been vandalized.

BUT, you do find a public one on the website of a Shawarma Shack that offers a view of the street outside. Its...crowded. There's no audio feed, but you see a person shouting.

Behind you, an african-accented voice calls out. "HEY! Cindy? What's the deal? Is...[to Zooey] is she glitching out or something?"

You speak without looking back.

>>21970783
Approaching the Doc Smartgunner results in a brief moment of panic, as it initially suspects the three of you of being CRIMINAL SCUM and raises the bullpup assault rifle to firing position. But, experience overrides reflex, and it lowers the weapon to an at-ease position.

Zooey flinches visibly and cowers behind Heja, who's had guns pointed at her before. You ignore the misunderstanding.

This is awkward. You're not all that good at talking to other robots.

"Is there something going on on 67th street...officer?"

It has a badge with an ID number, so its technically an officer, in addition to being equipment. It responds, raising its old-looking camera head to its highest setting.

"Normal city life is continuing in all districts, Citizens. There is nothing to..."

It trails off, a green data LED flashing on its shoulder. You continue.

"My owner went off the grid in that area, and maybe you could help us find her?"

Abruptly, it speaks again.

"There appears to be a large number of citizens exercising their right to free speech in that area. However, an information blackout has not been authorized."

It speaks into a reliable, conventional radio strapped to its chest.

"Possible unrest in progress on 67th and Becker. Officer investigating on foot. Also, possible Missing Person's case, pending official 24-hour lapse."

"In This Officer's Experience, Citizens Exercising Their Right To Free Speech Sometimes Lapse Into Riotous Behavior, Which Would Unquestionably Be Disturbing The Peace, And Thus An Actionable Offense."

Where other individuals would use capitals to describe concepts like "disturbing the peace" or "making an affray," this guy just capitalizes everything in the same style.

You are now nearing the mosque, a perfectly modest building that also incorporates a community center. Some bits of it are scarred with graffiti, much of it pointedly depicting a guy in a turban when it isn't just xenophobic slurs.

Your movement would be impeded, except for the armed combat robot striding foreward fearlessly in front of you.

Based off the Facebook and Myspace (it bounced back) information you grab from the faces in the crowd, and the signs that they're waving, and a sketchy translation of the chanting, this is...kind of a clusterfuck. The crowd is a mix of arabic, african, and caucasian.

As near as you can make out, there's a bloc of young people wearing thrift-store dress who seem to be demanding greater public attention to the plight of the immegrant poor. An end to ghettoization and so forth. Of them, there's a big chunk of women who alternate between skimpy club clothing, respectable dress, and the crazy all-black haz-mat suit, who are particularly bothered over women's rights and the handling of domestic issues.

There's also a...slightly larger bloc of mostly men, most of them wearing beards, with their signs and chants in farsi or arabic.

A bearded man near you shouts out something like "You dishonor your heritage!" There's also a lot of yells to the effect of calling people apostates.

Rachel's interest in politics is near-nil, and therefore, so is you own. However, you've picked up a bit here and there. The long and the short of it is that Detroit owes a lot of its population to immigration from countries that didn't get through the Arab Spring in once piece. For every country that improved, another one had a civil war or elected an islamofascist regime and then had a civil war to overthrow the elected regime. And, cooped up in their own Muslimtowns, all the worst parts of the culture festered.

Now, there's a big chunk of the city's elected officials that owe their position to being hardline islamists. Elsewhere in the country, this didn't happen quite as badly, and the immigrant populations are flourishing (they're doing better than lots of the native people, as it happens). But thats because they were properly integrated. No one gives a shit about detroit.

It seems that those members of these communities who DON'T live in an imaginary stone-age are fed up with being ordered around by crusty old bearded men. Particularly the women, who are pissed that they're more oppressed HERE than they would be back in their countries of origin.

Or so you gather.

A striking arab woman (obviously very cold) wearing a one-piece bathing suit hands you a pamphlet itemizing various assaults and horrible domestic happenings, including a few genuine honor killings, that were nearly un-investigated by the police, and claiming that they're to do with the civil authority being intimidated into looking the other way. You say thank you, and move on.

Someone else is handing out codes for e-access to secular humanist literature along with torrents of audiobooks. Apparently, God Is Not Great picked up a lot of popularity after a few decades thanks to the snappy writing style.

>>I really, really miss Christopher Hitchens, and kind of hope he'll still be remembered in the future.

Rachel appears to be very well-hidden amidst the crowd. The hardliners themselves seem to be simply turning up to show the flag, as it were.

ASOTIL speaks into its radio

"Unknown Perpetrator Appears To Be Utilizing An Illegal Milti-Spectrum Jamming Device. Requesting Cyberwarfare Division Track Signal Location. Situation Is Currently Under Control."

Your WiFi connection craps out, then pops up again. You must be on the edge of something.
>>
>>21972879
Well that explains why we couldn't call Rachel. She must be somewhere in the radius of this thing.

Try to get some height above the crowd so we can look for Rachel better.

Keep searching and figure out the deal with the national socialists. Are they militarists or those weird-ass nonmilitant sort of nazis who want to deport everyone to their ethnic places of origin? I'm guessing the former, but no reason not to be thorough in investigating this possible dustup.

Heja sighs. "They should just get out and leave the crazies to it. They're choosing to wall themselves up in their own little world."

Zooey isn't nearly has socially conscious as Heja, and just looks terrified.

There is a raised thingy nearby, a chunk of civic architecture bearing a statue of an armored man holding a gun. You clamber up on to it, pausing to note the bronze plaque bearing the words

Once slightly higher than the surrounding crowd, you see that...yeah, the national socialists are the militant types. There's a few signs talking about deportation, but you catch sight of a baseball bat or two, and some gigantic NRA tattoos.

Continuing to search, you see...a flash of light brown and red, over on the other side of the plaza. Traffic is backed up, and Rachel appears to be fighting through the crowd, shaking her phone and raising it into the air, seeking a signal. A man hands her a pamphlet, and, distracted, she starts reading it. You see her face turn red, and she starts yelling at the nearest person, a woman wearing a stylish headscarf, who yells back in shared outrage.

You shriek with relief and, waving your arms, rush over to Rachel, her friends following you. ASOTIL remains near the statue, surveying the crowd and maintaining order. You see other cops, here and there, mostly human with a few heavy plodding robots kitted out with riot gear. There seems to be an undue ammount of vitrol directed at the cops, but ASOTIL isn't catching much himself.

Rachel looks up in shock when you reach her, and is even more shocked when you slam into her modest chest, wrapping your arms around her in a tight embrace. Behind you, Zooey and Heja see her "face take on a "welp" expression, then she slowly pries you off.

"What the hell are you guys doing here? I was TRYING to get to the usual place, but then there were PEOPLE everywhere, and there was no signal, and...did you READ this? its INFURIATING. Also, are those dudes over there like, HUGE 40K fans or something? They're all covered in two-headed eagles."

ASOTIL has a large-caliber handgun raised in strange mimicry of the armored statue.

Seeing a weak target, the skinheads charge foreward, shouting something about protecting the city from terrorists. Baseball bats are raised, and they're heading...right for your gaggle of motley-dressed protesting women..

The skinny jackknife wielder proves faster than his giant companion, and lunges, grinning, at the four of you. The knife is going straight at Rachel, and you move to interpose yourself, and...

Heja interposes herself between you and the knife, raising her arm to block the attack. The knife stabs into her hand and wrist, tearing at the flesh.

Hmm.

I think Clarke would be a tall gangly guy with some rather impressive muscles. He probably wear beat up functional clothing most of the time, have a pile of tools on him, is usually splattered in grease and machine oil, and I think he'd often have a cigarette dangling from his mouth and a slightly dour expression.

Cindy would look like a punk party girl.

Quinn would be a doctor with a 1000 yard stare.

Hoss would look like a sheriff and have a rather angular lean face.

Hound would be shortish thing guy with a manic grin who laughed at inappropriate times and plays with his knives too much.
>>
>>21974794

I have never really understood this humanization thing. Why do people draw non human characters as humans anyways?
>>
>>21975321
Well this obviously wouldn't work as a whole if Clarke wasn't a robot who didn't really look like a human, so he can't just be human.

But we're very good as ascribing emotion, personality, and son to to human faces and expressions. So that's pretty much why.

It can make the character easier to identify with or get your mental picture of what they are like across in a different way than a picture of what they actually look like.

So, bumping with actual content.

I've talked it over with some friends, and decided that I'm going to write up a quasi-formal short rulebook, using the nWoD rules, for Machine characters. Compared to all other systems out there, I think nWoD would work the best, since I'm tired of the D20 glut and FF's 40K is too spergy and complicated, especially to mod. Intended to be quasi-balanced with vanilla human WoD.

Do any post-apoc-focused WoD setting books exist? That'd be a good starting point for things like new merits and gear.

Anyways, I'm still working out character creation rules. Preliminary ideas: Instead of having every shell type statted out, there's general archetypes to pick (Archive, Persona, Scout, and so on) from, like Clans, and each one has certain favored stats and favored "applications." Applications are powersets like Overcharge, Overclock, Technopath, Hardening, Stealth, and so forth.

Final selection is Manufacture (Civilian, Military, Industrial), that further focuses your character on certain skills, or makes merits cheaper. (industrials get gimped social stats but cheap craft and resilience, military get cheaper weapon skills and built-in armor, and so on)

So, to create an Ogre construction unit, you'd pick a Brute shell type and Industrial manufacture, while something like Cindy would be a Persona (civilian) model.

I'll make a separate brainstorm thread this week and get opinions from people who actually know WoD back-to-front.

Safely very, very close to a police station and a bus stop, three human females and a robot sit in a tight cluster.

Zooey is shaking and crying softly. Since Heja isn't very good at comforting people, and doesn't need comforting herself (or maybe needs more than anyone could ever give her), Rachel is being calm and strong and stroking her back with one arm, explaining that everything's okay.

However, Rachel's other hand is holding your manipulator, and based on the force and the pulse rate your sensors are picking up, is more rattled than she looks. You're pretty sure you're supposed to squeeze back.

Heja speaks, looking at the square of flickering glass in her shredded hand. "That's got to be the third riot this year. And the 'net's all confused. No one was sending out any footage until everything got really, REALLY bad. Reconstructions are WAY off."

Rachel turns to you. "It's okay. I'd still be fighting my way through the crowd if you hadn't come looking for me. and...well, thanks, you guys. I...oh, you got those, too."

She lifts the black datastick tickets out of the bag. "Wow, you are REALLY on the ball."
>>

She looks at them dubiously.

"That's at 8 tonight. Uuuugh, I wanted to go SO badly..."

Zooey says "mwo mer oo ooing t-....sorry. Who were you going to bring with? Wait...not that Jace guy? The one with the face tattoo?"

"No, I was going to invite one of you. But its kind of a Sophie's Choice, you know?"

Rachel bites her lip. "Maybe I should just call it a wash..."

She looks absolutely heartbroken.

"It's up to you Rachel, though this would be a good way to get your mind off of what just happened.

>>

Rachel smiles and hugs you back, causing your code to glitch out for a moment.

The hug apparently goes on a little too long, and she politely disentangles herself and holds the tickets up triumphantly.

"but that still leaves the problem of which of my friends to bring along...

she looks between Zooey and Heja. Zooey stops in mid-chew to look at her, lips tight together. Heja's huge brown eyes are fixed on the sticks.

Heja somehow manages to conceal her disappointment.

"Whatever. I'd have to wear long gloves or something, anyways."

Zooey is too selfless to be overly jealous

"Ooooh, that's so sweet of you, Rachel. You two should totally go. Cindy would love it."

Rachel's smile is eclipsing the whole world, and you can barely think through the haze of errors as your worldview shifts.

Your default programming, a hazy bunch of memories that were supposed to prep you for scheduling powerlunches and the like, prioritizes your owner's mood and efficiency, and suggests augmenting those by organizing and streamlining their life. Whenever Rachel went out of her way to help you or be nice to you, it always kept on sending alerts that you were being too obtrusive and interfering. You just had to ignore it, but something deep inside of you was worried that you were doing a poor job.

That part of you is gone now. You have an ego.

An ego that's utterly tied to Rachel's opinion of you, but an ego nonetheless. it's a start.

Heja and Zooey take their leave, planning to get their arm repaired and go play with puppies, respectively. Heja's probably going to start another FFXV7 playthrough afterwards.

Together, you and Rachel return home, you to top up the batteries, Rachel to scarf down some real food and wash off the fear-sweat.

Rachel emerges from the bathroom with bedraggled hair, having not yet mastered that towel-turban thing, several mild bruises beginning to show from the shove of the crowd and the flight over the dumpster.

"Cindy, bring forth the swag!" She stands proudly in a heroic pose.

"It's time to suit up, girl."

Her heroic pose causes her towel to come undone.

You bring forth the heavy footlocker from the closet as she finishes drying off and pulls on some underthings. Within is years of collected brik-a-brak, much of it studded with spikes and steel plates. There's also an artfully ripped pair of jeans that were genuinely worn down all to fuck, and only later kept as treasured apparel when grunge came back into style.

"Okay, we're going for this, this, and that, which will be great with that...Cindy, what do you want?"

You cock your head to the side. "what?"

"The bling? I'm going for the leather bracer/ fingerless glove things, and the metal stuff for my giant shitkicking boots. What do you want?"
>>
>>22002319
>>Select your accessories wisely. Or don't. Whichever. Modern styles are, of course, beyond our limited ken as pathetic style-less denizens of 2012. But Cyberpunk is now actually an actual thing, and the band itself has a backwoods, rough-and-ready vibe with lots of duct-tape-covered parkas.
>>
>>22002319
We need to go full punk rock. Expose plenty of metal, we're not trying to cover up. Make sure our clothing has plenty of rips, tears, and spikes. No sleeves on whatever we wear, cut them off if need be. Skirt, not pants.

>>Neither do I. I'm flying blind here. But, WHO CARES?

You settle on a tight black tanktop, made tighter by tying a knot at the back, and a series of buckled straps around your neck and waist. The Black skirt you find is knee-length, but looks pretty kick-ass when ripped and tattered all to fuck. Rachel also has the idea of putting a skull-adorned hair clip at the base of each of your head cables.

In a burst of creativity, you smear purple blacklight-reactive paint on the tanktop, making the characters C 1 N D 3, because fuck you, leetspeak is still cool.

So adorned, both full of your respective fuel, and with a weak pain med in Rachel's system, you're ready to hit the town.

The concert hall is in the city center, on the edge of downtown, and again near the giant walls of the Exclusion Zone. But the bouncers are huge, the lights are bright, and the crowd is full of similarily-adorned young men and women all converging to listen to...

A scrum forms at the door of the building; The Rave. It was once some sort of theater hall, back when stage musicals were a thing, but the seats and many of the floors were ripped out, along with all the wall hangings, revealing bare masonry covered here and there with plywood. You catch a shoving ripple from the crowd, pushing you into a skinny male covered in piercings and a Chaos-spike hairstyle.

"hey, watch it, little miss-wha? Who the...Hey! Is this thing yours?" He addresses Rachel. She responds with

The Doorman appears to be wearing some sort of ostentatious ocular rig that covers his whole (bald) head.

However, the ocular rig conceals that he actually has dead-lens implanted eyes underneath, rather than the usual real-looking optics.

"Ticket Lady...ies." He pauses. "Robot counts as one. I hope you have...oh. Thanks for making this easy. Inside, wait to get checked, then start rocking out. NEXT!"
>>
>>22003269
Rachel proudly hands over the two tickets, and you and her receive coded hand-stamps from a pakistani woman wearing a hoodie made mostly of duct tape.

There's a perfunctory weapons/illicit materials check. As you watch, some guy is pulled aside and ejected along with his dumbass switchblade. You find yourselves crammed into a cavernous room full of shuffling, jabbering humans in variously genuine attire. A guy and a girl in complementing outfits stop in their tracks as they see the pair of you, and in unison yell KILLER! and flash a complex double-fist handsign.

A tall asianish male stops Rachel to ask "Holy shit, you know Pedantic Shark?" in regards to her t-shirt. Your database spits out that Pedantic shark is her favorite 2040's band; no one else has heard of them, ever. You personally find them too hard-edged.

A stouter young man with coffee skin and classical skater atire stops you to ask "I...you're actually a fan, aren't you? That's, like, actually slightly ironic! REAL irony, I mean. Guys, we need a picture of this. What's your designation, or whatever?"

Rachel pulls herself away from the fellow PS fan long enough to pose with you to the flash of phones. Afterwards, the group chats with the pair of you, partially to confirm that Rachel didn't just program you to spout off punk rock catchphrases or something.

Your olfactory sensors are incredibly crude, and there's no particular tags associated with them.

However, you smell...blood. Sweat. Excrement. The sensors are quickly clogged and nonfunctional, thanks to what must be massive ammounts of dust.

Network connections are currently...inactive. You're picking up nothing but static. That's new. Before, you were on the building's internal WiFi.

You sit up. There appears to be minimal damage to your shell. a few joints slightly out of alignment, you'll need maintenance, that's about it. You can feel something rattling around inside your head; that can't be good.

But, it obviously wasn't anything SUPER important.

We've been at a party for a while, we probably already have the glowstick wrapped around our wrist. Don't worry about the paradox.
>>
>>22005584
One of the EMTs looks up at you, confused. Why the hell is a robot pleading with him?

The other one shakes her head, and says something that you can't make out. Fucking microphone.

Now they're pulling out a plastic sheet. That's not right at all. You stride foreward. You've only got a basic medical database suitable for first aid, but they apparently suck at their jobs. If you could just...

A heavy-gloved had closes around your upper arm.

"Go outside." A cop speaks to you, clad in riot-gear. The glowing blue eyes of the helmet make him look like a machine. He's using that 'giving orders to a robot' voice. he just ordered you to go outside.
>>
>>22005695
"Fuck you pig.

These incompetent EMTs aren't even attempting to resuscitate Rachel, and you want me to just leave while they let my friend die? Fuck you."
>>
>>22005695
You don't go outside.

"You don't understand, Officer. Rachel, my owner, she needs medical attention. I have-"

he interrupts you.

"We need to clear the area and do a sweep. Get outside and report to a perimeter officer. We'll require a statement from you. Now."

you can only stare at his impassive helmeted face.

"But...Rachel"

He loses patience. "Officer Holt! Escort this robot outside. Its interfering with the scene.

>>22005729
This elicits no response as another riot-armored officer takes you by both shoulders and maneuvers you out the door, past hustling EMTs and buzzing floodlights. When you scream out "PIG!" you're violently jerked off you feet and dragged.
>>
>>22005768
Struggle as much as we can, which given having 1 dot in strength isn't much.
>>
>>22005768
With a shove, you're ejected from the building and on to the steps. Red and blue lights. EMTs. Cop Cars. A Helicopter.

There's a cluster of survivors wrapped in the standard blanket, speaking to an officer taking notes.

"and then everyone was screaming and I couldn't breath because of the smoke and the dust and [cough] and people were staggering around. some of them didn't have arms, and then they fell over. It was like out of an old war movie."

she's speaking in a monotone. It seems the officer found a deadpan talker instead of the blubbering inconsolable type trauma victim.
>>
>>22005853

And there was this girl like, right near the center. I saw her before. She'd brought her robot with her and dressed it up and it was talking about music with someone before the concert."

The girl pauses for breath.

"And she was all opened up down the front and there were guts and her neck was torn open and I saw the tube things inside. And her robot was there and it was covered in her blood and it just kept pressing on her chest over and over and...it was screaming."

She finally breaks down into tears.

"It was covered in her blood and...oh god, and it reached out at me and I didn't...I didn't know what to do."

she collapses against the officer, knocking the datapad out of his hands so that it hits the ground with a crunch of fractured glass. she sobs against his chest, desperate to get the pain out of her.

"And it just kept screaming! And it wouldn't-it wouldn't stop pressing and there was so much pain and I felt it! I could FEEL the pain it had! and it just kept screaming and screaming and..."

I think this is an appropriate time for Cindy to go into shock.

Oh.... shit... I figured it was something like this, but, damn.

By the way, about that character creation. How would you class, let's say, a civilian model made for bodyguard duty? Cause something like this guy is something I'd want to make if I ever got the chance.

>>C//open sysrep ^rgwerg03The hospital.

>>Rachel's at the hospital. I'll just walk there and meet her there and its all fine.

>>Rachel's at home. I'll walk back home and she'll be there. Too late for a bus, but I'm sure she wouldn't mind if I used a taxi, it's So far and.

>>And I've got to wake Rachel up for school. There's a test today, and I've got to pick up those tickets. I wonder which friend she'll take to the concert. Probably Heja. Heja needs to get out more.

"and it was covered in her blood and it just kept pumping and it was screaming for help and-"
>>
Well this escalated quickly
>>
>>22006028
Indeed it did. Cindy is not having a good day. She is having an extremely bad day that ends with her wandering downtown Detroit, presumably aimlessly and she might do it while screaming.

Oh, thank fucking god for that.

This raises even more questions on how Cindy ended up in Mexico.
>>
>>22006062
Dayumn, Cindy had some serious repressed trauma.

And she's not going to wake up to anything pretty, before this flashback we had just gotten sucker punched by some nasty Network.

>>22006108
Those questions are already answered. When we found her and her shell, at Paco's Used Robots way back when, it said that Paco got her from his cousin who found her abandoned and wandering downtown Detroit who shipped her off to him to sell as he wanted a few borders between her location and where she was being sold just in case her owner was still around.
>>
>>22006108
Not really. The accompanying emails found in the used robot shack mentioned she was stolen off the streets, having been found wandering aimlessly, only to be sold two country borders away to keep the heat off of the thieves.
>>
>>22006062
That's pretty tragic. Rachel didn't even get killed in the war, just some random bombing.

I'm not sure whether that was a small mercy or not.
>>
Not gonna lie here...I teared up just a little bit near the end of writing this when the bystander starts talking. When I went into this, I knew it was going to be brutal, but i didn't realize how I was going to go into excruciating detail, and i kind of feel like I've transgressed or something, to no particular effect beyond grossing out myself and my readers.

Shit

>>22005984
You got it right. The "soldier" shell type (or whatever its eventually called) is independent of the "military" manufacturer.

BUT, I still don't know how that's going to work. But I want to make an open-ended system that would let people represent pretty much any model they can come up with and fits the general style.

>>22006217
A bombing that was generally PART of the "war." It wasn't one war, just a lot of small wars that all bled together. National Socialism seems to bounce back whenever things in a country get really, REALLY shitty (see Greece currently). Plus all the white people having an absolute freakout that they're not the majority anymore.

I'm not a historian or a poli-sci dude, so my ability to come up with futuristic shit is kind of limited.
>>
>>22006062
Wow. Clarke's flashback gives us awesome die hard adventures and a cool nickname. Cindy gets horrible mental scarring.

Poor Cindy, she wont handle this well when she reboots.
>>
>>22006217
What gets me the most is the image of Cindy, completely splattered in blood, somewhat battered, desperately doing the compressions on a body with its torso cut open and severe everywhere else and more blood spurting out with every compression. And Cindy just screaming a painful static note.
>>
>>22006273
Huh. So, opposite the Civilian-Bouncer, we could in theory have a Military-Charismamancer.
>>
>>22006276
Actually...this isn't an unlocked memory file. Its just a normal everyday trip down memory lane. Cindy didn't have a conveniently courrupted index or whatever. Just oodles and oodles of weapons-grade denial.

Now she doesn't have enough denial anymore, but she's been..."processing" the experience the whole time she's been active.

So...character growth?

>>22006279
That's what stuck in my head too. My stupid, horrible head. And like a jackass I had to pull an incredibly obvious drawn-out sequence with it that I was stupidly proud of when I thought of it.

>>22006305
Yeah, I guess. Not sure how you'd concept it, but theoretically possible. in D&D, you can make half-troll drow clerics of moradin, but I don't know why you would.
>>
>>22006305
Diplomancer was the word I was looking for.
>>
>>22006317
I'm not smart enough to figure out the Military-Diplomancer combination, but I could easily see the Civilian-Bouncer develop mafioso mannerisms.
>>
>>22006317
Well, Cindy had to come to terms with Rachel's death sooner or later, though it would have been better if she didn't do it while getting mauled by a Network bot.
>>
>>22006273
I don't think you went overboard. It was extreme, bloodier than this quest usually goes, but it really got across how fucked up what happened to Cindy was. It was a bit visceral, but you well and truly got your point across.

Somehow an asocial maintenance bot, who doesn't like people as a whole that much, has a tenuous grasp on emotion at best, has been forced by circumstance to turn himself from someone entirely devoted towards fixing stuff to someone who casually rips off heads and limbs and ends up destroying more than he creates even though he just wants to put things back together, is the least fucked up member of the party. Except for maybe Hoss.
>>
>>22006346
I'm sure that Hoss lost a bunch of fellow officers who were one day away from retirement at some point

I feel like I strayed into the territory of those fucking stupid animes where everyone has horrible things happen to them.

I TRIED to make Rachel a decently interesting character, if only to make Cindy's obsessive pseudo-sexual fixation on her more...I don't know the word. less annoying. Not sure if I succeeded or not. The relationship was supposed to be this awful combination of Best Friends Forever and Dog/Owner, with a wee bit of one-sided Crushing going on.

This whole thing would need LOTS of rewrites. Now I regret not making the future more cyberpunk, and not setting the whole timelene 50 years ahead but still leaving in all the stupid cultural references.

I mean, it was 60 years in the future.

But this is detroit we're talking about, so its actually more like being 30 years in the future.

Sigh. I'm going to bed
>>
>>22006418
Don't worry, it's not like anybody cares about Detroit.
>>
I don't usually comment in these threads, I just draw robots occasionally, but this, oh god..this was tragic.
Made me actually pretty sad.
What get's me the most is the fact that Cindy herself doesn't probably know hoe to even deal with that trauma, nor can she express her grief as easily as humans can. Robots can't cry, even when they desperately need to.
Also, as her ego was tied to Rachel's opinion on her, the denial, and eventual acceptance of her death must have changed her ego, for the better or worse.
>>
>>22006435
Well, thanks. Apparently, I can write tragedy pretty well.

I'm looking forward to getting back to the postapocalypse, however.
>>
>>22006454
'Pretty well' is an understatement. That was less a gutpunch and more you breaking our backs. We avoided one disaster, only to careen right into another.
>>
>>22006418
I liked this bit, it did explain a lot of Cindy's idiosyncrasies, why she kept on bringing up Rachel, all of that. It was also pretty interesting to see that Cindy really didn't interact much with other robots, her life revolved pretty solidly around Rachel and Rachel's social group which shaped her development a lot.

The rest of the cast defines themselves much more by their skills, their professions, something that is still relevant in the postapoc, but Cindy defined herself by Rachel, a person who is now long dead. She was utterly devoted to Rachel, she was her personal assistant and robot, but Rachel also wanted her to be her best friend, and you really can't be both. Being someone's best friend sometimes means you have to not listen to someone, make them angry, not do things for them, and Cindy couldn't do that, which is kinda messed up for her.

It was pretty one-sided, Rachel liked Cindy, but she had other social links, Cindy only had Rachel, she lost everything which is why her denial of the event is so extreme, and part of why she keeps up the eccentricity to such a degree, thinking that if she acts more and more human maybe it'll all be okay.
>>
>>22006454
That was well written, I have to admit man. The way you put the scene together honestly made you feel for Cindy. I wouldn't rewrite it at all.
>>
>>22006527

Agreed.
I just feel so bad for both Cindy and Rachel. Rachel having to die in such a pointless way, with no warning, and due no fault of her own. Her future taken from her in this brutal fashion due to insane violence. And Cindy, having to witness her best and only friend die in such gruesome way, be treated like an object by everyone else, stolen and taken far away from her home, and then waking up to a strange new world, in which almost all her valued skils and knowledge now meant nothing to the denizens of the lost future.

Their future was robbed from them in a cruel way, at the peak of their happiness, during a moment, when nothing seemed wrong and they had no worries in the world, which makes it all so tragic.

This is the first time a quest has made me feel this sad. Your skills at story weaving are excellent OP.
>>
>>22006792
Joker Quest managed to pull off an excellent gut punch, you might want to read it.

And yeah, this kinda paints Cindy in a whole new light. It all fits now.
>>
I lurk. I sometimes draw. I like. The ddifference between what you despise and what is written is that it has impact, emotion, well written and was appropriate. Hind sight is a bitch, but if you feel some of this is shit than you are a fucking alchemist. Making shit into sunshine. Rock on.
