Sup /tg/, I'm taking a party on a dungeon crawl through a ghost ship (the space kind) in an upcoming game. The scenario is that the party's been tasked with investigating a massive obelisk seen drifting through the rim stars. When they arrive, they find a ship that vanished years ago drifting near it with an SOS signal coming from someone on the bridge.
Granted, the game is Dark Heresy, so some of it writes itself, but I'd like to hear some other people's thoughts on what sort of things you'd expect/want to find on a crawl through a trap laden, critter infested ship.

Have the PCs take off their helmet in space if they spend too much time out there.

I'll be honest, a fair bit of the campaign is blatant plagiarism from pic related. That said, there's a short story that involves the characters hearing the stars "whisper" to them. Once they get far out in the rim stars, I'm planning on slipping them notes saying that a voice in their head either demands they serve them or tells them they're weak and will die at their fellow players' hands. Oh, and crew members writing things in blood on the walls.

As long as I'm ripping it off, I should probably at least say the book is good.

Okay
Okay.

Weird.
I was planning on writing a fungeon for my AD&D group that was basically an ancient, plane hopping ship that has been picking up monsters and shit for many centuries.
And the plot hook was going to be that they wake up one day and there's this big ass obelisk sticking out of the ground outside of the city (part of the ship; it's big and spikey).
Are we hivemind, OP?
Also, the ship is ruled by a hilariously crazy lich in a flying coffin. He mocks the PCs constantly and just generally fucks with them.

Also, cryogenically frozen crew members, ghosts of past characters (miniplot of fungeon), gravity reversal puzzles and mimics. Tons of mimics.

I think it has something to do with the fact that reality is already turned on its head. So you got normal that already isn't. And you add onto that the fact that a spacesuit is second only to a straightjacket in helplessness.

As a side note, has any anon ever had those dreams where you try to punch, and it's like punching through water? or you try to run, and it's more akin to swimming?

I think that is also an aspect as to why.
That and given the nature of how large some ships are vs crew size (for example, the Nostromo in Alien or Red Dwarf in Red Dwarf) also leads to a sense of isolation and loneliness, just because much of the ship was built, but no one is meant to/can live there.

Ok heres a setting. The monolith is actually a memetic reality warping device that passively interacts with the PC's subconscious, temporarily altering the ship and the happenings within and around it at random based on whatevers foremost in their subconscious. Just dont tell the PC's. At first make the changes subtle but logic defying (impossible device readings, messages from home or other players that never existed, finding a large cache of a player or NPC's favorite food in the pantry but no record of it on the supplies manifest, ect.)

As confusion grows start ramping things up. Suddenly outright impossible things start happening, time begins to behave erratically, the layout of the ship becomes foreign, and peoples deapest thoughts and their dreams begin to manifest in reality, but still reveal nothing to the PC's. As fear and confusion begins to fester in the minds of the crew, the changes made by the obelisk begin to reflect it and only propagate it further, until the ship is riddled with impossible geometries, and the amalgamated nightmares of everyone on board.

Now that's space horror.

Sun above, Earth below. We sit together, at the place where gravity holds us still. We are silent, hidden from the planet's eyes. We cast no shadow.

She points, with her long, slender fingers. The stars pass out of sight, as the second ender obscures them. It is large, but too far away for those below to take much notice. They predict that it will pass safely by. They are wrong.

The beast of metal and rock turns slowly, lifelessly, as we observe it together. We have destroyed one of its kin already, and we will do the same to it. We will do the same to all its brothers, until we are no longer needed.

We will protect, unseen and unknown, she and I.

She speaks to me so sweetly, drawing her words across my mind like ribbons of silk. Here, in this place, in these ornamented halls, I hear her voice alone. The hum of her body caresses my flesh, building in intensity as she prepares her spears.

For a moment, the breath catches in her throat. I feel her palms on my shoulders, moving across the soft metal of my second skin. My head sinks back as she touches my spine, running her fingers up to the brittle spar that connects us.

We sit together, unseen and unknown, turning in the black. She whispers of her might, the holy task of her weaponry.

I give the order, and she shouts, only for the second time. The invisible spears of her main battery seek and find, and the second ender is no more.

We sit together, my beloved and I. She hums in the void, casting no shadow.

By that I mean actually stay focused and not get bored of writing it, not making a story that is long.

I've writen stories for English tests that ended up being way too long. Wrote like, 3 and a half pages for a half hour thing and I considered it to be an incomplete chapter one. That was awkward because we then had to grade each others story.

Staying focused can be extremely difficult. Procrastination is the main problem I have when I'm writing something. You just have to force yourself to do it, at least for a short time each day or week. Eventually you should get into it and not want to stop, and then you'll build a habit.

-Report from the frontier worlds-
-Seneschal-

Something on this planet has taken a liking to the goats.

Initial scouting reports of Seneschal revealed no life forms more than half a foot in length. Since the colony's founding two years ago, we have found no conclusive evidence to the contrary. Conclusive.

Even in the short time we've been here, Seneschal's mists have sparked imaginations. More than once, settlers, mainly children, have wandered too far from the perimeter and come running back in a panic, crying that something big had chased them down from the hills. On one occasion we found tracks leading to within a hundred meters of our perimeter fence, but in the dry ground their age was near impossible to determine. They remain there, and no other tracks have been found.

Certainly, we've had two children go missing. It's lamentable, but given the circumstances, there is no indication that a creature caught them. Recall that one of the first scouting parties got separated and lost within five meters of each other, owing to thick fog. Frankly, the way the families let the children run around unsupervised, I'm surprised more don't get lost and disappear beyond the fence. We've set up rope paths to prevent these sort of disappearances from recurring, but kids are kids.

Speaking of kids, you'll want to know about the goats. If you haven't read the earlier reports, the short of it is that the goats are some of the only livestock that have taken a liking to the rockweed that grows here. Since even the GM crops are having difficulty rooting here, they are the only animals that have flourished here. As such, their milk and hide have become highly valued.

Since they are the colony's primary source for these resources, you can understand the concern that swept through the colony when we began to find them eviscerated.

Bah, I already don't like how it started. It started with one idea, then I go off topic in order to explain why the character is on a research base as an engineer, when said reason probably wont matter much. Blarg.

I know the feeling. I've got about a hundred stories that go that way, including some I've been doing partial rewrites of for two years. The best advice I can give is just sit down and keep working at it. You'll start to find things that work and that you can build from.

Ironically, some of the writing I'm most satisfied with are snippets I've written for /tg/ threads.
Speaking of which, part 2 in a minute here.

So revise it. A first draft should go through multiple edits.

The first indication that something was odd about the attacks on the goats was that they were all left in a similar state. Their abdomens were cut, or perhaps ripped, open in a line along the length of the body. Injured legs on a few of the bodies seemed to indicate they were probably held down. Some amount of flesh and organs were always missing, but the blood from the incident was localized. The butcher leaves a mess when it kills the goats, but never a trail.

Naturally, the first assumption was foul play. Bad blood between the herding families became worse when accusations started flying that they were slaughtering each others herds.

Around the same time, rumors of a different sort circulated. Some colonists claimed to have seen or heard something moving through the colony at night, and as these things tend to in small towns, speculation grew. Stories began to go around about an animal, whose size and description changed with every telling, coming into the colony at night and feeding off the goats. One of the families even gave it a name that stuck. "Chingbe". They said it was from a pidgin language that people spoke on their homeworld. They tell me it means goat killer. Not very imaginative, but it seems to have stuck.

The players may decide to try to rescue the AI.

If they do, let them go to the central computer room to retrieve the AI core. The door's jammed, and there's also no atmosphere in there, but these things can be fixed or overcome.

When they open up the access panel, there's nothing in there but torn and drifting wires. The AI never speaks again.

We only have a few solid leads. Other than the dead goats themselves, we've found sections of fence that were badly mangled, if not by a man then by a large animal. Only the cows would be able to have made a hole like that in the wire. The most assured "sighting" of this Chingbe comes from one of the agriculturalists, who was sitting on his porch and watching the hills as he drank a beer one evening. He said something that at first looked like a rock suddenly stood up on two hind legs, sniffed the air, and loped off on all fours. With the dim light, fog, and alcohol accounted for it's not a very reliable tale, but the rough size of the creature he describes is just large enough to make a hole in the fence.

What is to be done about this is up in the air. Again, despite the killings, we have no conclusive evidence that this is a real creature. We don't want to arm the colony, nor do we want to call in a military guard. We need to protect the colonists while assuring them that they will likely never need protecting. Should the attacks continue we may request a set of firearms to give to the colony officers. Should- god forbid- any colonists be found dead, more drastic steps will of course be taken.

Either way, we will be requisitioning more goats shortly.
