you manage to snap out of it, rebooting some of your systems. You realize your core is upside down.

"Liz? Can you hear me, Liz?" A voice comes. It sounds....

"Butch?"

".... Holy shit, you survived that?" He says, mildly surprised.

"Apparently." You answer, realizing your core is upside down and righting it. "I sure the hell felt it though. What happened?"

"That huge thing we were fighting shot you with what looked like a bubble, and then you just fucking flew away."

Standing up, you see where you are. Apparently some kind of office building, judging by the debris. You collided with the seventh floor, and you can see the machine a couple blocks away marching towards the middle of the city.

Checking your integrity, your Armor's only above 40% on your chest, and not by much. your right arm is gone entirely, and your thrusters are hard-capped at 75% power to prevent a meltdown.

"Uh, Liz?" Butch's voice ventures on the comms. "We're slowing it down, but we need your help to actually kill this thing."

"There's some missiles in there. Evil firebombing war-crime types."

"SHIT." He breaths. "What do you want me to do?"

"Try using your sword on the flaps. If they need to open and close the armor can't be as thick there. If you can cook them off..."

"Machine goes boom?" He asks hopefully."

"Maybe, maybe not. But it'll take away pretty much all of it's capability for large-scale destruction."

"Got it. what do you want Paul and Wally to do?"

You hesitate. "Do they have laser blades?"

Tunnel Snakes Rule!
>>
Rolled 47, 63 = 110

You watch as Paul draws the machine's attention by slamming directly into what looks like it's mandibles, doing almost no damage. It served it's purpose in making it look away from Wally, who then jammed his physical blade into its front stomper legs, ripping them open and causing it to rapidly lose steam.

This impressive display of improvised teamwork on the fly surprises you, and then you realize that they were only making an opening for Butch. As they dance away, watching all of the guns reorient to face them Butch lands and over-charges his sword so heavily that the flare makes your screen tint. His entire right arms is smoking, obscured by the light as he delivers several rapid, punishing blows upon the hatches, leaving them smoking and ruined, fire pouring everywhere.

He launches away from it as the entire abdomen goes up in flames, the frame rapidly begins to slag as the machine begins to convulse.

And over the radio, comes a whisper, soft, like someone telling a secret. It's takes you a moment to recognize Butch's voice, as the words he says begins to sink in.

"Tunnel Snakes Rule."

You have a hard time disagreeing.

Suddenly, the machine seems to eject the ruined missile hub, and move forward again, faster than before.

"Ah SHIT!" Butch yells. "Got any more ideas, sweetheart?"

You're about to say something else, when you see a red core with yellow and black highlights land on the machine's back.

You blink with surprise and you check your radar.

"Was that it?" You ask, surprised.

"We're badass. Don't Jinx it." Butch responds, same bewilderment in his voice. "Come on, Nest isn't that far from here. Let's hurry back."

A few moments later, you're gliding into the garage, and you get a message from Cal now that you're actually connected to the Local tac-hub.

"Liz? Where the hell have you been?"

"My com unit got damaged during that hit and run op you deployed me on." You respond with a sigh. "Since I couldn't connect to you, I hooked up with some locals and tried not to die until we could Rendezvous."

"Alright. What's your status?" You decline to send words, just a copy of your internal sensor's damage readings. "Christ. Liz, are you alright?"

"I'm fine." You respond, as your core begins shutting down and docking for repairs. you start to stand, but your legs immediately buckle, and force one of the techs to catch you. "I'll be fine." You correct, sheepishly.

"Take a breather." Cal says, voice distant as he re-evaluates the situation. "We'll be fine without you and you really need to get checked out. According to this readout you were clocked at 65% when you took the big hit."

You sigh, leaning against the rail. you see Butch walking over to you, clearly giddy with excitement. "Roger that." You respond, feeling the tension drain out of you.

"So why are you so happy?" You ask Butch lightly as he walks up.

"You're joking right? We just killed that monster, stomped so rocks, and saved the day. We're heroes. We're AWESOME." He says, looking at you with almost maniac glee.

".... And?" you respond, not quite understanding.

"And?" He says, excitement giving way to genuine confusion. "And what? We won."

"Not yet." you respond, looking around at everyone in the hangar, prepping and repairing. "Let's pat ourselves on the back when we've actually ended the battle."

"So no champagne?"

"Nope. Generally you end the fight with some rest and getting ready for the next one." You respond, looking at your core. "Damn it, we JUST finished repairing it after the last time it was totaled too."

Butch falls silent behind you, and suddenly you feel a weight on your shoulders. "Didn't know you were such a bad-ass, boss." He says, as you look down.

"Why am I wearing your jacket?"

"Because you earned it." He says with a smug smile. "Tunnel Snakes rule. You rule, you flew with us, hence jacket." He hesitates and looks you over. "You alright, boss? Look a little unsteady there."

"High synch." You respond, brushing off his concern.

You decide to settle on going to see a doctor. After a few minutes examination, he tells you that your shakes are just your body reacting badly to the pain feedback not signs of permanent damage.

Butch helped you to the lounge area, where you relaxed for a short while, waiting for either news of the battle's end or your own return to combat.

You sigh, shaking off your growing headache as you look back up to Abby and Ryan.

"You really can't remember the dream?" Ryan asks, disappointed.

"No, sorry. Other than meeting Butch and a few instances of combat, everything's kinda blurred." You shake your head again, like a dog shaking of water. You try to ignore the feeling of wrongness.... "I think... I think I remember seeing Jack."

"Jack?" Abby asks confused, Ryan gives you a look.

"I thought he was dead." He comments, looking to one side.

"... Who's Jack?" Abby asks, looking between us. Ryan looks at her, and then you, expression unreadable.

"I guess you never met him. He worked with us in the Pack back before we got assigned to Will's unit." He stands up and stretches. "I'm gonna go for a walk, have a smoke." he explains, walking for the door. "Maybe when I get back you'll have remembered some more."

"I'll try." You respond weakly. You look back to Abby, intent on asking her something, when suddenly she's forcing you down as she climbs on top of you.

Something....

Something's not right, you realize.

But you can't be sure as to what it is.

And Liz is kinda squirming underneath you as you try to pull her in closer.

That's when you realize she's crying.

"...Liz?" She doesn't respond, trying to curl up underneath you. Somehow your desires feel... unnatural. "Hey, Liz? are you-"

The sudden jolt as she kicks you off of the bed startles you, and you sit there stunned as Liz cries herself to sleep, unable to say anything.

YOU ARE ELIZA MCALLISTAIR.

You find yourself in an odd field, looking somehow... familiar, but not somewhere you've been before.

"I tried to go for something a little more.... generic." You hear a voice explain, and you turn to see Alexander leaning against a tree watching you. "The last time I accidentally made you very uncomfortable." He sighs. "Something of a recurring theme, apparently.

You choose to speak with the boy, walking up the hill towards him.

"Eliza." He greets simply as you reach him.

"Do I know you?"

"No." He responds, evenly. Something about how... precise his responses are reminds you of Will. "I've been following you for a while now though."

"How so?"

"For some reason, events are happening around you, and beyond you. Since you were so close to the crux of certain events, I was hoping to find an ally." He shrugs. "Now, I'm no longer certain."

"Of me?"

"Yes." Something about the way he just says it makes it less painful. "It's not particularly wise to use a damaged tool, especially one with thoughts of it's own." He hesitates, and then pulls you into a brief embrace. "Which isn't to say I don't think well of you. I just think it would be better for you to sit this one out."

With no further explanation, he leaves. You slowly turn, and begin walking back to Alexander, who's watching you with interest. "Well that cleared up nothing." He says with a sigh.

"Apparently I'm not good enough for him."

"Then he's an idiot." the massive man responds calmly. "Besides, a General goes to army with the army he has, not the one he desires."

"So why am I here?" you ask, asking the most obvious question.

"Because Lilith fucked up." He responds with a sigh. "She saw that you had some issues, and she helped to block out the pain to try and help you settle them and heal. Instead, you jumped straight into the one situation that could fuck you up."

"I don't quite understand...." you respond confused.

"Neither did she, when she sicked Abby on you back there." He shakes his head. "This is why she isn't supposed to be getting involved with this, but I guess she wouldn't be Lilith if she didn't assume she knew better than everyone."

"So Abby wasn't...?" you aren't sure that makes it better or worse.

"She has the feelings, otherwise that wouldn't have worked. but that wasn't a good thing." He then grabs you and pulls you into a hug. "The important thing, the thing we can't stress enough, is that it wasn't your fault."

"I don't-"

"Not your fault." He responds firmly. You aren't sure what he means, but you can feel a weight shifting off your shoulders as he says it.

You start to cry again, not hard, but it's there. After a few minutes pass, you collect yourself and he stands you back up smiling.

"Better?"

"Yeah....."

"Good. Though you may want to talk to somebody about this, when you get the chance. Someone you can trust." He hesitates, eyes changing briefly to a pure, blank white before returning to normal. "It looks like your friend Ryan has a Psychology bachelors. Might be a good place to start."

"Lilith...." He sighs. "Lilith is a conductor, like myself. Well, not like myself at all. She's... well.... I guess in order to explain her I should explain the rest of us. We were... created. the closest term in your vocabulary for what we are is 'Artificial Intelligence'." He hesitates and looks at you. "It's not completely... accurate, but there we are. My Brother, Agamemnon, and myself evolved out of tactical simulators. The military wanted to better train their commanders, so they developed increasingly better and more complex simulations to test them and hone their skills."

"And Lilith?"

"Lilith was an attempt at a social, dynamic A.I. she was given inputs and taught how to decode certain messages and systems. After a while, she began to understand that language was representative, and found a way onto the internet to expand her conscious. she wanted to be as human in mind as possible, and began... experimenting. Frankly, to those who don't know her she comes off as an insane hedonist, but she means well." He sighs. "Generally, it falls to me or Gawain to babysit her as a result."

He appears thoughtful when you mention Will. "I tried looking into him a while ago. he knows how to cover his tracks since he used to work in intelligence." He shrugs. "My best advice is to talk to him about it. All I've got are a few rumors and hearsay."

"So when I had my... moment, with Abby....."

Actually, my thoughts were Lilith in Nobody Dies. She has zero character in canon. In ND exposure to Lilith... lowers inhibitions. That's why the part about her "sicking Abby on us" got me down this line of thinking.
>>
>>22021724
Can I have a list of all the conductors so we know what/who to watch out for?
(this feels like a long shot question, but I have to ask)
>>
>>22021783
Huh. Can't say I'd even heard of that one.
>>
>>22021724
If you lead from the front, you must have a very good idea of who the enemy is. Care to share anything?
>>
>>22021724
Can you design weapons? Or know anyone who could? Could you get them to design a better lance/staff weapon for our AC?

Important, could those around us get controlled at any moment? Could I be controlled at any moment?
>>
>>22021724
>If you know their names, then you might be able to puzzle something about the man behind them as well
Wait a minute
Legion...
If there's one named for the Abrahamic Lilith...
Then perhaps Legion...
Is named for THAT Legion...
Like, the horde of demons Jesus kicked out of that one dude and into the horde of pigs.
OR
Maybe he's some descendant of the software system developed at the University of Virginia using NSF funds, by the group that would become the Avaki Corporation, which went bankrupt in '05...
>>
>>22021803

"No."

>>22021895

"That's exactly the problem. The way things are shaping up, humanity and the conductors will go to war soon. I don't think there will be any going back once first blood is shed."

>>22021903

>going to ignore the first part for obvious reasons.

"Direct control over a person shouldn't be possible. You would need a mind that's either incredibly fragmented or Mentally zoned out'." He looks contemplative "Without that mental and emotional 'gap' to be inserted in, any attempt would be futile. Furthermore, you'd need a link as stronger than the one we have now, active constantly." he shrugs. "I mean, in theory it can be done. But you'd need to culture the events to occur in a certain way for years, maybe even decades."
>>
>>22021941
>Is named for THAT Legion...
>Like, the horde of demons Jesus kicked out of that one dude and into the horde of pigs.
...You're only just realizing this now? The guy can control armies of Cores and MTs simultaneously, after all.

Speaking of which, I wonder what Nineball's part in all this is? If he's still an AI, would he still have the same purpose as in Master of Arena (ie protect and guide humanity)?
>>
>>22021949
How is the battle going? The real one, in Vegas, that is?
>>
>>22021949
to clarify my own ignorance, is the Conductors vs humanity tension the main arc/conflict of this quest?
>>
>>22021973
>The guy can control armies of Cores and MTs simultaneously, after all.
Well yeah, but I was thinking "dude's got pretty fuckin' good micro" at first. I mean he's an AI designed to control a battlefield, that didn't really strike me as "unusual" at the time as we had no baseline to work from then, and after we fought him I chocked it up to "well if he was made by repeated forking and having the forks fight, forking again from the winning fork, the name works", but now it does seem unusual since we haven't seen the others do any of that shit. Unfortunately we can't find out if that's normal because Liz has no reason to ask about it.
>>
>>22021949
>"No."
"Ok, but I'm gonna hold it against you if something terrible happens that could easily have been stopped by just giving me a small bit of information. Anyway do you know how the Vegas defense is going?"
>>
>>22021988
It seems poised to become the main focus but this was not clear until fairly recently, and is still not totally clear.
>>
>>22022013
Also I'm on the US east coast so I'm usually pretty brainfried by the time AC-Quest rolls around, especially the third night.
Sage because /tg/ ain't my blog.
>>
>>22022013
>that didn't really strike me as "unusual" at the time as we had no baseline to work from then
It was Nineball's schtick originally. In the...final mission, I think? of Master of Arena you fight like four at once. I'm pretty sure thats why AC Guy put him there at the final conflict. As well as why Legion said "Target verified. Commencing hostilities."
>>
>>22022039
ok. from the recap threads the focus seemed mostly on survival, prosperity, defense of Vegas and Hope on Alex's end of things. Still not really sure where Liz fits into the shape of things, what her group is doing. Enemies seem to be human scum and Legion. Have I got that right?
>>
>>22022070
So far, yes. We don't quite have a handle on the overall Conductors thoughts on things, but the ones that we've met so far, other than Legion, have been nothing but helpful and want to avoid a war.
>>
>>22021949
"The boy apparently doesn't have any use for me at the moment. Do you want anything of me? Or was this meant to be just a pep talk?"
>>
>>22022070
> the focus seemed mostly on survival, prosperity, defense of Vegas and Hope on Alex's end of things
Up until fairly recently that was indeed the primary focus but it has begun to shift as we have been made aware of the conductors and get glimpses of what they have been doing behind the scenes as well as Legions attack on Vegas.
>Still not really sure where Liz fits into the shape of things, what her group is doing
It's honestly not that clear yet, she mostly just seems to be tangentially related to everything single thing that is going on which is why she is having attention focused on her by the conductors (she has too many links to other things for it to be coincidence). I believe AC Guy stated that Liz is is basically what might have happened if we had chosen to be female way back in thread 1, which allows her to be the back up protagonist if Alex ever dies.
>>
>>22022129
> if Alex ever dies.
sounds like that was much more likely to happen if y'all hadn't taken Dervish with you against Legion's fort.
>>
>>22022145
Dervish has proven himself to be invaluable to Alex and his team. The general plan is to do whatever Dervish says without question which so far achieved the best results. This may or may not bite us in the ass later as we know almost nothing about him and people are constantly hinting at terrible things.
>>
>Sorry guys, connection issues on my end. Gonna wrap this up and call it a thread in a couple of posts, sorry about that.

>>22021984

>It's already over. Liz was reliving her part of it via flashback.
>>
Alexander sighs, looking up. "It seems your friend has returned from his walk." He looks down at you and gives you a small squeeze on the shoulder. "Don't give up Eliza. you're stronger than you realize."

You wake up a moment later with Ryan gently waking you up, shaking your shoulder with one arm. As you turn to him, he speaks. "What happened?"

"Wha?"

"Abby's curled up in a chair not talking, and you look like you cried yourself to sleep. What happened?"

>What say/do?
>>
>>22022441
Go give Abby a hug. don't say anything. express apology with your arms.
>>
>>22022441
"I'm not sure. It's just so complicated and there's things I don't remember and I'm not sure if I should remember and I'm confused and lost and I may have hurt Abby."
>>
>>22022441
"I'm not really sure. It was, weird."
Hug Abby.
>>
>>22022441

Go hug Abby, and then kinda confess that we don't know.
>>
>>22022452

Do this.

>>22022472

Then this, before we start to cry.
>>
>>22022491
But we are going to cry, a lot, full bawling tears, enough to get Ryan to dust off his Psych degree and sit us down for whatever major trauma we have.
>>
You sit up, and then hobble over to Abby, as she sits in the chair, staring at the wall.

You grab her, forcing her up and pulling her into a hug before she can react. you stand there for a long moment as she starts to cry, and the two of you sit back down on the bed.

After a minute Abby calms down a little bit, and you try to explain things to Ryan.

"I don't know what happened." you say honestly. "I remembered some things, but I don't remember some things but I'm supposed to." You say, kinda babbling.

"What do you mean?" Ryan asks.

"I don't know." you respond, as the seeming futility of the situation catches up to you. "I don't know, and I don't know what to do about it." After a long moment you kinda look at him with a wry smile. "Apparently, I have issues."

There's a moment of incredulous silence in the room, broken after Ryan reached over and brushed a tear out of your eye. He then sighed dramatically, and pulled both of the girls onto his lap as they finally began the long delayed emotional breakdown.

"After almost an hour of emotional release and the nothing but silent companionship, Liz asked Ryan if they could talk sometime in the near future."

"About?"

"She wants to resolve her problems, apparently."

"Perhaps we underestimated her." Says a third voice. "How many others do we have access to?"

"In America? She's our only potential asset. Nobody else has had potentially sympathetic contact with the Conductors."

"Then I guess we can only wait."
>>
>Alright, thread over.

>See you next week guys, someone make sure this gets archived.
>>
>>22022618

WHAT.

no wait, carry the two....

Yep, nope. No fucking sense. What?
>>
>>22022684
Some party with either an axe to grind against the Conducters, or is looking to infiltrate them. I guess whatever contact Alex has had with them doesn't count as 'sympathetic.' just my two cents.
>>
>>22022710
Which, I suppose, means that if things go horribly wrong, Alex and Liz my have to fight each other.
>>
>>22023088
This would be VERY interesting.
