Yup!

As a main 'two sides' sort of thing, there are humans and youkai.

Further into that, there are different households that can be called factions. The Human Village, the Scarlet Devil Mansion, Eientei, Hell, etc.

I can't remember the names of all of them, but any one of them could easily be a 'starting area' for players, or just where the players call home.

That's just fan interpretation. The books have interviews conducted by Aya with guests from the SDM's frequent parties. Flandre's shadow can often be seen walking behind the curtains on the ground level; she just never leaves the mansion itself.

>>21996051
Basically. The end of the 5th game ends up with an entire pocket dimension getting glassed for real. The spellcard rules were drafted afterwards to keep that from happening again. Gensokyo is only like 250 square kilometers: they can't afford MAD situations, and a huge portion of the population is capable of it.

Also, Flandre is dumb. Not Cirno dumb, just totally naive and completely misinformed about the world in general. She's not even aware she's a vampire or what vampire means, as all her meals are prepared and seem like regular human food.

Mostly because on the handful of occasions Remilia tried to teach her to hunt, she exploded her prey.

Also contrary to popular belief, Flandre is not locked in. Remilia asks her to stay, and she does, but nothing's actually holding her there. (Unless Remi is using her power over fate to make her want to stay.)

tl;dr Flande is only hard to kill because she's a vampire. Otherwise, she's got nothing going for her outside of her power. She even has classical vampire weaknesses in sunlight and running water. She is considered extremely unnerving, though. Even Marisa avoids her on her frequent book-raids in Viole. (Which may be where Flandre actually lives, as Viole is also the basement.)
>>
>>21996249
In the Aya interview, I am pretty sure that Flandre was pretty darn smart, outwitting Remilia.

I don't recall that at all. What book was that, again?
>>
>>21996274
I'm certain a fair number of individuals are obfuscating stupidity.

But yeah, a lot of characters have powers that are ridiculous anywhere else but are almost par for the course in Gensokyo. Sakuya's power is total control of time and space, and she's the maid of the SDM. Reimu's power (I think) is to fly over anything. Literally anything, including the bounds of reality itself.
>>
>>21996340
Wasn't Reimu's power more or less control over deities? All 8 million of them?
>>
>>21996375
Haven't heard that one. Then again, she has Yukari's ear, and she has the power of boundaries. While it doesn't sound like much, it makes her the single most potent individual in all of Gensokyo.
>>
>>21996295
Since I suck at names, I can't remember. But since I recall only one book that had Aya-done interviews, it must be that one. Red red something.

Yeah, the power scale in Touhou is extremely wide. From Yukari's "I get to decide what terms mean objectively" to Marisa's "I am just really good at making things explode."

>>21996375
That's a power learned by all shrine maidens over time. Her actual personal ability is the ability to ascend, or transcend. This starts as initially being capable of flight. Eventually she's able to effectively go incorporeal, distort reality, and move through non-Euclidean space.

>simple stuff
>Suika

Suika has one of the most ass-broken powerful skills there are: The concept of density. She can create black holes, she can create white holes, she can split herself into a million little selves, make herself huge, or even a sentient cloud. Nevermind the attacks where she uses density to create a mass of self-gathering stone, creating a boulder around her grappled target, and then throwing the whole mass like it's a tennis ball. The game she was introduced in had her turn sake into mist and inebriate an entire town, then used density to control the population flow to instigate a drunken party. And it's implied she's been doing this -every year since forever ago-, and Reimu only finally got around to figuring out why the whole village turns into drunken revelry at the same time every year, whether or not anyone actually wanted to.

Abstract powers like that shouldn't be used in games like this. They are more like plot devices than powers actually.

Actually if it would be me I would remove almost all official characters (unless your party plays as them) because they are tied too close to the plot and far to close to each other and as soon as you begin to interact with one stuff spirals into an uncontrolable mess. At best they could be minor NPCs or background NPCs. Other method which was mentioned previously, is to turn the characters into horrific abominations which most of them actually are.

Of course that also removes almost everything which make Gensokyo what it is.

Other than that Gensoyko is positively a great place to have an adventure!

Here's an idea.

ZUN says there's no actual gender bias in Gensokyo's population. The fact that the cast is all female is strictly his preference to draw frilly dresses. Which means that, on average, for every eldritch abomination we see in canon, there's a male counterpart to balance the gender ratio out. We don't even know half the power-players in Gensokyo.

His actual power is that he can determine the proper name and use of any item he holds, but not how to use it. This is useful, as he is one of the only ways to get things from the outside world. There's actually a story arc about him panicing over finding a Gameboy, because his power told him about everything one could possibly ever do within the games the thing played, up to and including JRPG-end-the-world type malarky. He ended up concluding that it was a device made by the gods and could control the universe. He intended to destroy it, but then Yukari got involved.

He is unique in that he understands something of Earth technology, though his understanding is skewed. He believes computers are the Earth equivalent of shikigami, for example.

He also may be way the hell smarter and more powerful than anyone realizes, as he hand-built the mini-hakkero, Marisa's pocket nuke. It's actually a Swiss army knife of items; you only see its "incinerate everything" setting in the games. It also contains true, from-earth technology working with Gensokyo-class magic to output that much power. There are microchips under those trigrams..

Yeah, Rinnosuke's one of the more interesting characters to speculate about. He also has that thing about having some of the Imperial Regalia... which... would be a decent hook for a campaign.

A lot of the events inbetween games are also not too drawn upon, so it's easy to just toss things in. It's a very open setting.

>>21997690

Well a part of it comes down to fan production. MLP really does have some good and interesting fanfiction (which I can't stand because I don't like the pony thing).

But fans actually make legal, endorsed, encouraged money off of Touhou, and that's a huge factor. Remixes, doujinshi, videos... it's pretty incredible.

It'd be nice if we westerners had more good fiction though - not that there aren't some fucking amazing doujinshi.

Unfortunately, Touhou has the field advantage of Japan being generally accepting of derivative works. Trying to make a fan-anything in the US often results in a C&D due to bullshit trademark laws that basically say "Defend it or you lose it". It's downright hostile to fanworks. Another advantage Japan has is in paychecks. When you look at the top earners of Japan compared to the top earners of the US, the difference is quite staggering.

>>21997680
One of the best examples is Koumajou Densetsu 2. Not only is it a very solid Castlevania-esque game, one of their team had the connections to get professional seiyuu to voice the entire game.

Either Wizard or Artificer (Alice would be a Wizard, mind). From Complete Arcane, see the Effigy Creature. And done. You don't need to take Effigy Master, as it's a bit shitty.

Make Effigies of Fey or Tiny Winged Humanoids, and you're done.

You can also make the guys that have already been presented in canon out as more powerful than how ZUN portrays them, since everyone's Gensokyo is different.

As an example, for my version of Rinnosuke, his ability isn't simply to 'figure out' how an object works; He actually decides on a whim what the object does, and then it works that way. So, if he determines that what was originally an old television set is a device for making egg sandwiches, it's going to be making some motherfucking delicious egg sandwiches.

Naturally this 'new' power is FAR beyond what ZUN says he does, yet it's still related to the original character, and can be used for humorous hijinks.

Also, yes, I know that the interpretation is VERY out-of-line with ZUN's (same poster, here). It's broken as fuck, and would basically mean Kourin's accounts in CoLA are 'skewed' so that the reader isn't let in on the whole picture; I don't think ZUN does that.

A cyberpunk Touhou setting where Gensokyo becomes a giant, sprawling, urban megalopolis would be delicious. Especially more so when one thinks upon how all of the houses/characters would end up. It's probably one of my favourite imaginings for the series.

Can't have pure grimdark all the time!

Mix up some amusing, lighthearted stuff with some awesome dark stuff. For example, when it comes to Cyberpunk, poverty and struggling to meet ends (Especially when it comes to the oddities of Gensokyo) could prove a good focal point. As for lighthearted stuff, why not have some silly events? Even in the serious manga works, there were silly moments, even when a battle was coming up.

It's a good setting for both.
>>
>>21999287

Here's a pretty nice single. I'm no good at album recommendations, because my touhou music folder is all unsorted except for ZUN's stuff, because I find each one is really variable in quality.

That said - ZUN's latest two albums - Trojan Green Asteroid and Neo-Traditionalism of Japan are both pretty great. Got some cyberpunkish tunes there as well, to fit with the other theme we've got going.

>>21999733

Yeah, in Silent Sinner in Blue, she alters the border of Truth and Illusion to make it so that by stepping into the reflection of the moon in a puddle, she was in fact stepping upon the moon.

Oh, wait... that's pretty much space manipulation...

"The danger and potency of the power to manipulate boundaries is beyond imagination. It's something that can only be controlled by those who are able to withstand its stress, or some weirdo youkai like Yukari. "

"She easily has enough power to annihilate all of Gensokyo if she so desires, so it's probably a good thing that she is somewhat weird... "

There's way too many that I love to possibly list them all, but here's a few that come to mind

http://vgmdb.net/album/27833

Folksy and charming instrumentals galore! The music is as lighthearted and lovely as the cover. Definitely worth a listen

http://vgmdb.net/album/27962

Some sort of growl metal madness. Even though I usually hate this sort of music, it's quite amazing how passionate and intense their renditions of the SDM crew's themes are

http://vgmdb.net/album/22594

My ignorance of music genres precludes my ability to categorize this album, but it's nonetheless worth a mention. I quite like it

Even most of /tg/ by now has probably heard a song or two by O-Life, such is the splendor of their music. In particular, Echo Beneath the Earth, Sound of the Grassland should be familiar to those who've played Monster Girl Quest

If you'd like Anon, we could keep it as a fun idea, even throw some discussion in just to get people interested, or just get ourselves interested in the setting itself.

How do you think some character's roles would change? Would some houses still be as prestigious as they are now? Would there be a harsh police force to put down unruly youkai?

Gotta love an oni's approach to partying.

"You WILL come to the party and you WILL get drunk and you WILL enjoy it!"

A few ideas for characters:

Yuyuko could be an AI/uploaded human component in control of the Saigyou Ayakashi (whatever that is - maybe some barely controlled Skynet-like AI). Youmu as her cyborg (half-human) guardian, with enough neural hardware to have a simultaneous virtual presence (her "ghost" half).

>Campaign ideas

It's pretty important to remember that the nature of Gensokyo is that everyone has their own interpretation. As long as you resist the urge to insert the existing characters into your campaign (Who wants to be reminded that Elminster exists when they're trying to have their own adventures?) I think it'd be quite nice

Just.. pick a tone early and go with it. Suspense and horror is pretty easy with Rumia, SDM in general, and the Bamboo Forest as inspiration. Lighthearted shenanigans have plenty of space for obvious reasons. Hell, with Hopeless Masquerade on the way, even political stuff in the form of religious wars are becoming a thing

I wouldn't personally be concerned with running a campaign "in" Gensokyo. I think it's just best to let yourself be inspired by it. Hell, I made a character based on Youki Konpakku with a dash of PC98 character inspiration and he ended up being one of the best characters I ever played

Are you thinking about a transition from the fantastical Gensokyo paradise to a cyberpunk world, or just a cyberpunk Gensokyo?

Nevertheless, since Eientei is my favourite faction, I may as well come up with some things for them. Perhaps as soon as Gensokyo becomes modernized, Eientei would stay relatively hidden. Corporations would love to have a hold of someone who can cure basically any disease (Eirin). Perhaps they would hide their base of operations under a casino (Lucky Rabbit Casino? Haha.). Udonge would still be the errand girl, and maybe she'll have dusted off the old Lunar rifle as not to look suspicious in combat. I'm sure Tewi could just rake in money as well, and Kaguya can keep her comfortable lifestyle, whilst Eirin masterminds it all.
>>
>>22000137

Yeah. She'd have machine-reflexes in the real world and semi-autonomous attack programs running - so when she attacks you, her Ghost would try to hack your systems and do "spiritual" (neural) damage along with the vibrosword.

Plus, sensor jamming and stuff like that. Anyone with active VR might see a cloud of "static" protecting her and zapping things.

But I think hybrid magic/tech or Shadowrun-style would work really well. (he says, after copying his old idea from http://archive.foolz.us/tg/thread/20888123/#q20897693)

A lot of the characters - such as Youmu - are supposedly quite good magicians, but that lack of it being shown or vital to their characters translates pretty well to them being tech-based.

How would we explain the presence of Fairies, /tg/? Little humans with wings that, no matter how hard you kill them, seem to reappear after a few days.
>>
>>22001170

They're expressions of nature right?

Depending on how greenpeace we want things, they might not spawn in cities at all. Or they're twisted little monsters kept in the sewers and ghettoes.

Otherwise, cheap, stupid labor. Fairy Parcel Service, Fairy Medical Testing Laboratory, Fairy Maid Agency.
>>
>>22001170

Just keep them Fairies. I don't think we are LOSING magic. They are little incarnations of the natural world...or the unnatural world in some cases. So you might find fairies near nuclear power plants that fly on wings of nuclear fire, or ones in the city that have wings of steel and eyes that look like cameras.

Eirin makes quantum mechanics her bitch anyways.

She's a genius.

I still don't follow if this is cyber-gensokyo or Gensokyo to Cyberpunk Gensokyo. I'm just confused now. Is it still all magical, or are we just discussng two ariations?
>>
>>22001225

I think it's still magical. The basic idea as far as I can see it: What if Gensokyo was Cyberpunk instead of old. Time hasn't advanced, it's the 'Now' of the setting just like the games are the 'Now' of the normal version.

Contrary to popular belief, they ARE real.

Though moon rabbits do have the ablity to telepathically communicate with each other over long distances.

They can also communicate through eye lasers, which handily double as an attack.

>>22001496

I think that all Moon Rabbits can hear each other through their ears.

Biomagical gengineering, perhaps. (Symbological Genetics dun dun duuuuh)

Have your moon rabbit secretary wired up, and she can securely open LOS/telepathic communications with other moon rabbits.

Moon rabbits communicate with each other through 'gut feelings'.

Since they love rumours and gossip, it's easy to get a wealth of information from them, but as Udonge says: "The information is only as good as the rabbit it comes from.".

One of my theories is that moon rabbits come in different castes. All of Reisen's former squad buddies have the same ears (And they are referenced as an 'elite cadre'. Reisen is the best among them, I'd say.) whilst the civilian rabbits have floppier ears.
>>
>>22001529

Question is, how do you tease and softly bully your moon rabbit?

Udonge's kind of the punching bag. Tewi plays pranks and Eirin just has 'punishment time'.

run with this setting, modify it a bit to put on a heavy emphasis on film noir and historical japan in 1920; could also throw in some steampunk/dieselpunk element into the mix.

advanced mode: gradually shift the story towards psychological horror then eventually to cosmic horror, and run it with nemesis or call of cthluhu rule set.

Deliberately solving a problem (breakthrough in viable/super-cheap fusion energy?) and destabilising the city by forcing the real power players (as in, most powerful youkai, not corporations) to reveal their hands by supporting the Heroines in their investigation.

Perhaps in this she manipulated timeframes so that when the Tengu and Kappa prayed to her, the Heroines were just beating down Utsuho and so she took the credit.

That's actually explained in the latest book, Symposium of Post-Mysticism. Gensokyo and Earth share an overall level of power/energy somehow, and Gensokyo is small enough that it can subsist entirely on the leftover energy from Earth. But as the outside world strives to become more and more efficient and less wasteful, that slice of the pie is getting smaller and smaller. Basically, she wanted to jump-start Gensokyo's own version of the industrial age. Moriya Shrine's location was chosen not only because it gives ample access to both sky and earth (her and Suwako's portfolios), but because of its vicinity to the Kappa, the only race with the know-how to make her goals happen.

The moon doesn't even need internal policing.

Moon rabbits are perfectly obedient little things, and they enjoy a luxurious lifestyle. They just dread being picked up by the Watatsukis, because then they are trained into (mostly) competent soldiers.
