You are a Magical Girl, and you've just stopped a god from going completely insane.

Well, more insane than she is at the moment, it must be said.

But yes, you managed to prevent her from tearing apart the Witch Barrier that you've willingly had yourself zapped into. The Witch Barrier that, according to said insane god, belongs to the sempai that you're supposed to rescue. You stopped her from erasing everything from existence just by hugging her as tightly as you could and never letting go.

Saving the world with a hug. You'd have laughed at the thought if you weren't so terrified.

If only all your problems could be solved by doing something so simple.
>>
>>22007320

Your name is Midori Hanegawa, Callidus, and you are currently in Chiaki Matsuda's Barrier. At least, Madoka - the pink-haired girl in your arms crying tears of blood into your jacket - says so. In front of you is a giant building that you recognize as the ultra-modern Mitakihara Middle School - a school where only those who could afford homes in the Upper District may send their children to be educated in.

You weren't expecting to find it here of all places. Witch Barriers - in your limited experience of them - tended to be twisted visions of places that somehow relate to the Magical Girl the Witch once was. This was...a fairly accurate, if not a spot-on replica of the school. It even had the inherent air of smugness about it, like the building was trying to hint that it was better than all the other buildings. As if the students weren't smug enough, even the building had to be, too.

According to Madoka, your sempai - or one of her, anyway - is hiding deep inside the building. You're not too sure what you'd do when you found her, but you are definitely decided on the fact that you'd find her no matter what.

Even if...even if the unthinkable had happened. Even if you found her to be something that she wasn't.

You promised Misaka, after all.

It's the least you can do.

"I'm...I'm sorry," Madoka murmurs after a moment, stepping back from you. Sniffing demurely, she wipes at her bloody eyes with her own gloved hands, grotesquely staining the white silk crimson. Making her clawed hands look like she'd just ripped someone's heart out with them. "You...you weren't supposed to see that. I wasn't supposed to cry, not right then. D-dear me, I must look dreadful..."

[1/2]
>>
>>22007330

Madoka giggles weakly, her voice fragile and vulnerable, just like how a child sounds when they're quite near to tears but trying valiantly not to do so.

"...Thank you." She suddenly says, out of the blue. A shy smile on her face. "No one's ever done that for me, before..."

How do you respond?
>>
"Well, fuck."
>>
"Don't mention it. And uh... you've got red on you."

-[X] But, if it's not too forward, you think she shouldn't hold it against her friend. Everyone has their own quirks and everyone will be a little selfish at times. Friends are friends because they help each other out and stick together through thick and thin despite, or sometimes even because of, all the little things that annoy each other, aren't they?
--[X] Now, let's go. It's time to go help out a friend.

We poked the soul gem we captured from the bearlord. It turned out that her incubator is a triple dickbutt and was fucking with her head.

We had a chat by proxy and called him a dickbutt a bunch, so he self-destructed her soul gem. That seems to have had unforseen consequences.

Madoka nods, beaming. "Yes, I do feel better. In fact, I...I don't feel as lonely, now. I don't feel as angry as I usually do." She seems to consider this for a moment, as if puzzled by the entire thing. Her bloodstreaked fingers coming lightly upon her chest, brushing against the completely black Soul Gem at the base of her throat. "M-my heart's pounding...I'm...I'm not sure what I'm feeling, now..."

A moment more, and it's then that she looks back up at you, tilting her head slightly to the side. "I...I suppose that makes sense. Homura-chan was stupid to do that, but...friends are friends, right? You stick with them no matter how stupid they get, or how angry they make you. You don't rip out their hearts or throw them into a Witch Barrier to be eaten just because of something like that..."

Her voice trails off, deep in thought. "Maybe I owe Homura-chan an apology, huh...I might have been too harsh, there, but then again, I wasn't really myself at the time..."

...Well whatever she feels like saying to your sempai, she can say when the both of you have rescued her, right? You say as you gesture towards the building ahead. Of course, if she's feeling well enough to do so.

Madoka nods, her black-tied ponytails bouncing. "Oh, please don't worry about me! I'll be fine! And yes, we should start looking for Homura-chan - at least, the one hiding inside that place!" It's then that she grins. "A-and just because you were nice, I'll make it easier on the both of us! Instead of us running around that place and getting lost every so often, I'll just warp us around!"

Huh. Well. There's a thing. Being nice to insane gods does have its perks, you suppose.

"Don't get too smug, though! Just because we're nice to each other doesn't mean I won't kill you if you try anything funny with my Homura-chan!" She winks at you while sticking her tongue out.

...R-right. Of course.

"Okay okay!" Madoka twirls in place, stopping to face the building in front of you - and peeks through an index and middle finger splayed in front of her right eye, her hand held in a sideways Victory sign. "Mado-Scanning Go!"

Mado-Scanning...?

"Hnn, right! I can see three areas that aren't filled with flesh-eating familiars!" Madoka chirps. "The clinic, one classroom, and...and the rooftop! Yeah!" A moment. "There's also one place that feels like it's important somehow...I, I'm not sure where it is, but it has a really strong presence inside it, a scary one! I can warp you there too, though, if you want!"

She twirls again in place, stopping to face you, and grins.

You swallow with a dry throat as you consider your options, as presented to you by the smiling, black-eyed girl with the bloody hands and even bloodier smile. The tracks of dried blood on her cheeks making her look all the more frightening despite her cheerful, eager grin.

Flesh-eating familiars, she said. A presence that even an insane, eldritchian nightmare in a cute dress is wary of. You were expecting your sempai's Barrier to be bad, but not this bad. Not...horrifying in this kind of degree.

You finally decide, and pick the rooftop as your first choice. You're not sure how it figures out to your sempai's past - hell, you're not sure how this school figures out in Chiaki's history, besides the possibility that she may have studied here before taking up a contract - but it sounds like a good place to start looking, if any. You'll just work your way down the other places.

...Wait. If she studied here, then...she'd have worn that really cute uniform at some point, right? The one with the cream blouse, and the green skirt...?

"Oh, she did!" Madoka nods, smiling - and nearly making you jump at her sudden confirmation. You must have been thinking aloud, then. "She wore it all the time when she wasn't in her Magical Girl costume - and she looked really cute in it! She was really shy back then, too...!"

Your sempai? Shy...? It...it doesn't compute, you think to yourself, feeling your cheeks heat up at the thought. N-no, it doesn't compute at all!

"Well, the rooftop, then?" The pink-haired girl chimes in. "Ah, come on, Midori-chan, focus! We have to save Homura-chan, here! Stop daydreaming!" She waves a blood-clawed hand at your face, and you catch a whiff at how...sweet her blood smells. "Snap out of it! Focus, focus!"

Y-yes. Of course. You're focused. You're ready.

[1/2]
>>
>>22007948

Rooftop. yes. You want to go to the rooftop.

"Right! Rooftop it is!" She holds out her hand, just as a sick pink shade of light seems to drip off of her, tendrils of corrupting energy curling and twisting off of her own malevolent aura. "I'll get you there in no time flat!"

Before sanity could rob you of muscle control, before common sense and instinct could force rationality into your limbs, you take her hand.

You are momentarily blinded by a million shades of black flooding your vision, and the cold, unnerving sensation of suddenly ceasing to exist.

You open your eyes to see...the rooftop of Mitakihara Middle School.

It's...not the rooftop you were expecting. Sure, there's the usual railings you can look over, the chain mesh to prevent anyone from falling over, but...it looks more like the rooftop of a palace, than anything. If palaces had rooftops like these, you're not sure. But it's really rich-looking, really grand, really expansive. You'd have to pay an attendant huge money to draw something like this in a scene. At the very farthest end, you see a doorway, most probably leading into the school proper.

There's no one here.

Not even Madoka. It's just you--

Wait.

No, there's....someone there. At the corner. A gray figure. A young woman, wearing the uniform of the school. Her long black hair falling down her back, sweeping down and flaring slightly at the ends.

Her features are indistinct, but you have the strangest feeling that you'd recognize her if you walk closer.

What do you do?

They are the same pinky. This is exactly why she's so dangerous.

She's not a split personality. She's just very, very unstable (i.e. batshit insane, from any perspective but hers).

The thing is, she's seen Homura's world be destroyed again and again and lived through a hundred thousand lives as well as again from the beginning of time (possibly?) and frankly, nothing actually does matter but Homura and herself. At all.

Remember the numbers on the golden weapons, we had one hypothesis that the numbering follows the Major Arcana.

So.... what do you think numbers on the chain axes are going to be?

Personally I think its going to be:
XV: The devil.

Because Kharn does have a self centered world view and is quite impulsive.
>>
>>22008200
Faust and corrupted Madokami, the same Pinky?
>>
>>22008262
Then she would be The Chariot. If I recall correctly, The Devil represents lust and temptation, so that's closer to Slaanesh than Khorne.
>>
Actually, are we confirmed that the chainaxes are indeed counted as a single weapon, rather than two separate ones? After all, it would be just like Kharn to pull something so utterly broken.

>and revivan
I find Captcha's comment to be somewhat ominous.

Kyuubey only knows Madoka as "Faust". Kharn has heard of her as "the Blessed Lady".

Chiaki knows her as "Pinky".

Do you think they're all different people, when we've seen Pinky's eyes literally turn from black to brown?

If we get Midori out alive, I wonder if we are going to get a scene were she describes Madoka and Kharn shouts "The blessed lady! Are you one of her chosen too?"

From her drastic mood swings and attitudes toward different people, it's probably not too inaccurate to describe her in such ways.

[x]Approach the girl.
But carefully.

And I think we could use Pinky's own JRPG metaphor to get her help in getting Mirai.
After all, you have to form your party before getting to the final level, and two people does not a party make; you need at least 3.
>>
>>22008347
(From thread 58)
A rasping of gears, a harsh metallic click, and the world freezes around you in a dull steel-cast gray.

And it's then that you hear it.

Crying.

Laughing.

Sobbing.

Giggling.

Two voices at once, behind you. The smell of blood mixed with perfume filling your nostrils like a stench.

The lights of the elevator flickering, uncertain in their slowness.

It's with a cold sweat that you realize that this...whoever it is in the elevator with you now - it's not Pinky at all. No cheerful pixie with the disturbing eyes and wide smile. Something she'd always been, but you'd never took the time to look properly.

Faust.
>>
>>22008422
Yes, Pinky was thinking of this as a JRPG, wasn't she?

...However, isn't the genre noir?

Here, black-haired beauties with legs for miles can only mean bad news.
But, of course, we can never turn them away.
Pull out your revolver and whiskey, Midori, and take a shot from each. One for you, one for the slimeball who's coming for you.
>>
>>22007968 >>22007986 >>22007992 >>22008025

While you're...somewhat relieved that Madoka isn't around, it's just as unnerving to be left alone in a Barrier. Sure, the pink-haired girl seemed just as unhinged as she looked, but she seemed genuinely eager to help out and keep you company. As twisted as it was, you were getting into the whole RPG party deal, as a way to cope with how disturbing it already was to walk around the twisted nightmare of your sempai.

You're tempted to call out to her, see if she'd reply or pop up again, but that could probably wait, you decide.

Instead, you make your way towards the only other occupant of the roof. The person in gray, just near one of the chain-mesh railings. Cautiously, you make your approach, slightly disturbed at the fact that your footsteps have absolutely no sound to them.

As you move closer - you realize two things: the first being that the girl isn't wearing a gray version of the Mitakihara Middle School uniform at all. Much more disturbing than that, she's actually in grayscale - as if some lazy artist had forgotten to color her in along with the background. Almost like some sort of spectre, or shadow.

The second thing you notice that she is, in fact, your sempai.

Murderface. Chiaki Matsuda. Homura.

You stop a cautious five paces away from her, bracing yourself to react at a moment's notice should something untoward happen. Swallowing painfully, you call out to her.

You've barely uttered your sempai's name when she looks down at her hands. A silver band on her ring finger glinting as she does so.

Her lips move, silently, wordlessly. After a moment, she looks at you, before pointing at something above your left shoulder.

Yeah and what did we learn from our brief stint as Kharn?
She is lust personified

Honestly I think she will be the devil and the chariot
>>
>>22008473

"..." You turn to follow her gaze. You see...nothing.

You turn back to the girl, puzzled - but she isn't there anymore. Leaving no evidence that she was ever there.

...Except for a small envelope, carefully sealed with a small pink sticker, on the ground where she stood.

You blink at this, leaning down to pick it up.

As soon as you do, the scent of corruption tickles your nostrils, and you feel a hand tug at your ribbon.

"Guh, sorry about that, Midori-chan! Something happened when I gave you a warp, I found myself in that strange place!" Madoka's voice chimes in your ear. "I almost tripped trying to get out of there, it was really scary!" She makes a disgusted sound. "Hey, what do you have there?"

This is it. This is exactly it.

Underneath Pinky's cheerful blood and black eyes and stench of death and all that stuff, there is something who loves Homura purely and deeply and is willing to pull out her heart.

You manage to work up a sheepish smile as you turn slowly to face her, and you hold up the mysterious envelope as you do so. You tell her that you found it right there, where what you thought was an apparition of Chiaki--er, Homura-chan was. She seemed to look different from her usual self, though - this apparition had long black hair, instead of the short hairstyle that you've grown accustomed to seeing your sempai in.

"Oh, an envelope! That...that looks like a love letter!" Madoka's eyes widen at the sight of the small envelope, the pure-black orbs seemingly focusing on the pink sticker. "A-at least, I think it looks like one! I...I kind of remember getting some, in the past, but it's been a really long while since..."

A love letter, huh? You turn the envelope over in your hands. Well, it does sort of resemble something like that. Not that you ever got any when you were still studying - rather, you've drawn Miracle Midori having her shoe locker being filled with the things on a regular basis, especially during Volume 3. Murder Mayumi would always make off with the whole lot, however, burning them at the school rooftop in a barely-concealed fit of jealousy.

...When you think about it, you're kind of pathetic, aren't you?

"A-ah! And yes, I remember! Homura-chan wore her hair long back then, too!" The pink-haired horror bounces on her feet energetically, snapping you out of your reveries. "It was really stylish and cool! And she'd do this cool flipping thing with one hand--" She reaches up and flips one of her ponytails back, while slightly craning her neck in the other direction, in a gesture that's both aloof and yet...indeed, totally stylish and very cool. "--whenever she did or said something awesome!"

You'd have to take note of that. It won't translate well on manga, but animated...

"Well, what are you waiting for, Midori-chan? Open it already! I wanna see what's inside!" She needles, and you quickly acquiesce, carefully tearing the envelope open. You reach in with a hand and take out what appears to be a carefully folded-up note. You unfold the paper with an equal amount of care, and hold it so that Madoka could read alongside you.

The handwriting was strangely familiar, all pretty curves.

>I haven't forgotten. I've never forgotten.
>I just couldn't live with the fact that you're gone.
>Or the fact that no one remembers you. Not even your own mother.
>I am prepared to be hated, to be reviled.
>I do not entertain the possibility of ever being forgiven.
>But I cannot live in a world without you in it.
>I cannot accept that I have to exist in a universe where you can't.

The note ends there, without a signature or a postscript.

"...That's...um..." Madoka frowns, stepping back. "I don't...I don't understand. I told her that we'd be together no matter what happened. I promised her that I wouldn't forget her, and that I'd be there waiting for her when she..." She shakes her head, seemingly confused at the same time frightened. "I...M-Midori-chan, throw that note away. It's meaningless. A-and let's go somewhere else, please!"

You feel something hard, small and circular inside the envelope. It feels like some sort of ring. Madoka doesn't seem to have noticed it yet.

How do you react?

Willing yourself to stay calm - as she should too, and not panic or go maudlin over a simple, harmless letter - it's then that you make a slow show of tapping the small envelope on your upturned palm. You tell her that yes, you'll throw the letter away, but there's something else inside the envelope that she might want to see. You may be wrong, but the letter itself may be from her friend, Homura-chan - and whatever it was left inside the small paper container was meant for her, too.

"E-eh? Something for me...?" Madoka squeaks, cautiously moving forward again - and just as she does so, a small, rather dented ring falls out of the envelope and onto your palm. It's quite in a sad state, with scratches and gouges over what should be supple, polished silver. The inset where the gem should be is empty, scorched, with some speckles of purple amethyst melted into the metal.

"That's..." The pink-haired girl makes a mournful sound as she reaches for it. "...Homura-chan's ring. Her...her Soul Gem, right before I...I..." She shakes her head, and looks up at you, eyes wide. "C-can I...?"

Her words catch at her throat as you nod, allowing her to take the ring from you. You hear her very nearly sob as she does -and it's then that you remark, quietly, that the letter didn't seem to be meaningless at all. Homura-chan, despite the mistakes she'd made, no matter how horrible they were...it seems that she really loved Madoka that much. Finding living without her so unbearable that she was willing to sacrifice everything, to be hated and reviled. just for a chance to be with Madoka again.

...You don't know all the details, of course, but that's what you gleaned from what you've seen so far.

Madoka seems silent at your words, and you see the ring disappear in a brief plume of pink flame, just as her fingers close over it.

What do we actually know about Midori's character, anyway? She's infatuated with Murderface, she's got a wild imagination, she's willing to go along with rape of innocent girls, she does get angry and upset when pushed into hard questions.

Would she be willing to try saving a god by risking angering her? Why would she?

Would she actually be wanting to try that to help out her beloved to be happy with this crazy witch thing? She might do, but it's an uncertain thing from what I'm reading into it.

This is exactly the point. She's been through the kind of suffering where you'll help with rape so you don't die.

Pinky's not being terrifying at the very moment, so there's a point in actually helping her, admittedly.

(I am totally wishing for a good end reconciliation between murderface and faust, and green can always be wistful on the sidelines, knowing her small love was nothing compared to that heartwrecking romance)
>>
>>22009585
You know, as she gets to know Homu more it wouldn't surprise me if Midori got over her crush, I mean she's realised the real Murderface is nothing like her fantasy anyway. They'd probably stay friends though.
>>
>>22009585

I thought that is the general direction anons agreed to steer it towards.

Given current trends, Green will be at peace and realising Pinky's love for Murderface really is much greater than her's, when Pinky pulls out her heart.

All the independent personalities will receive their own body.

Homura and Madoka go off to be happy together, and Midori spends the rest of her life in a lust-fueled craze as she's surrounded by multiple copies of her idol.
>>
>>22009738

Oh yea. Something I have been thinking about.

I really wonder if the MGNQ Homura and the Anime Homura are the same person or not. If you ask me, there is more evidence that there are separate people then not.

Then again, there is the option that they were separate and then they merged together at one point.
>>

Quickly thinking back on the choices she gave you earlier, you decide upon classroom. Madoka merely nods at this, and holds her hand out to you once more - her sunless eyes now narrowed, spiteful, suspicious. You make to reach for her hand, when you suddenly realize that you may not see her for a while after this, just like what happened with your first warp.

She doesn't seem to be in the mood, but you believe that it's better to ask now than catch her unaware later, which could potentially cause more trouble than the sort you may get right now. So, just before your fingers touch Madoka's gloved, bloodstained ones - you ask her about the strange place. What was so scary about it? What was it that made her want to leave it immediately?

"...The person I hate was in that place," She all but spat, her words dripping thick with petulant hate and venom. "Crying. Helpless. Defenseless. I couldn't stand to see her like that, looking so useless. So worthless."

Before you could ask who it was, she'd already reached for your hand - and the world disappears once more.

It reappears as soon as you remember that you have eyes to open.

You are in the middle of a classroom. Transparent plexiglass walls, scrolling whiteboard, automatic chairs that unfold from the floor. Once, in a simpler and much more colorful time of your life, you'd have given anything to be here, to study where the elite of Mitakihara could.

How times change.

The room is empty, again, but in a strange twist, all the tables and chairs are unfolded, seemingly waiting for the students to come in. A few moments more of waiting - and it's then that you see yet another grey shape, sitting in one of the tables at the back row.

[1/2]
>>
>>22009799

Another grey phantasm of the long-haired version of your sempai, again. Looking absolutely bored, leaning her cheek on a desk-propped elbow. Her eyes seemingly focused on the board in front of the class, but flicking to the unoccupied table beside her every so often.

What do you do?

You call out to the apparition of your sempai. It's a bit disturbing how your voice doesn't seem to echo in this enclosed space, but at least you can hear it. It doesn't seem to catch the attention of the girl, though, and you try it again. And again. And again.

The fifth time, she turns towards you, looking completely irritated. You freeze for a moment - and you nearly, very nearly, laugh in surprise as you see for one brief second, your sempai looking like her old, ill-mannered, easily-irritable self. It's here then that you suddenly realize just...well, just how much you miss her. How the sempai that woke up after the procedure seemed like a complete stranger, someone you couldn't even look straight in the eye. Sure - she treated you with less suspicion and she was a bit more...considerate than the original, but it just wasn't the same. she didn't feel the same.

You reach up to wipe at the tears pricking at your eyes, and it's then that the long-haired ghost of Chiaki Matsuda vanishes, just like the first had. Leaving behind another envelope on the seat of the chair.

Another one. It's strange, it does kind of fit Madoka's idea of an RPG, doesn't it? Ghosts leaving behind messages. Warping through rooms to avoid encounters - a mysterious location with a seemingly powerful boss. You wonder, idly, if she's manipulating Chiaki's barrier to her own tastes? To provide herself with entertainment?

...No, she couldn't. You shake your head at this, before picking up the envelope left by the second ghost.

It's not as properly made as the first one. In fact, it's two pieces of notepaper, torn from a notebook, the first hastily folded into an envelope and the other folded and crammed inside. You make to open it when you feel someone come up from behind you once more. It's Madoka, of course, and her mood seems to be just as black as when she warped you here.

[1/2]
>>
>>22010211

"Whining and crying all the time! Ugh, how did Homura-chan stand being around that crybaby?!" The pink-haired abomination snarls. It's then that her voice warps, into a cruel approximation of a simpering waif. "Boo hoo, being a magical girl is suffering! Sayaka-chan, please don't fight Kyoko-chan anymore, you're supposed to be friends! Kyuubey, please turn Sayaka-chan back from being the stupid monster that she is I HATE HER SO MUCH I WISH WE WERE DEAD!"

The room shakes, and for one brief, dreadful moment, you fear the worst - but as soon as the tremors start, they stop, and you feel Madoka suddenly hugging you from behind. Burying her face into your back, her arms clasped around your stomach.

You try your best not to make any quick or sudden movements, while keeping a hold on the envelope.

"...Midori-chan, have you ever hated yourself for doing something...embarrassing...in the past?" Her voice is surprisingly calm, muffled against your jacket. She seems to be taking deep, slow breaths too, clearly trying to calm herself down. "Something you never want to be reminded of ever again, but you always get reminded somehow?"

How do you react?

It's not as simple as just turning her good, I'm sure. But this might do a lot for giving Madoka some kind of Good End later, if she starts to humanize again at all.

As with all story-based games (or interactive stories as in MGNQ's case), this is always something to consider. Yes it is probably possible to do everything right, but screwups and failures will create a more interesting and emotionally engaging story. Happy endings aren't always the best endings in a story.

>screwups and failures will create a more interesting and emotionally engaging story
I disagree with that sentiment.
The possibility of failure is the important component in creating an interesting and engaging story, not the failure itself.
Failure just for drama's sake is a piss-poor grab at the players' attention.

Of course there is hope! Something important needs to be crushed, after all!

I don't think that we can necessarily turn Madoka "good". But reminding her that she is still a person might do wonders in making her less batshit crazy and malicious. And it's just a nice thing to do, in the end.

Meta: self-loathing isn't very healthy, Madoka.

Following MGNQ has turned me into a paragon of patience.
Trivial matters such as time and space no longer concern me.

Bit late replying to this because I left to do something, but what the hey

You're correct in that the anticipation of failure creates good tension, but I take issue with your point that actual failure is a cheap emotional cash-in. The results of the protagonists failing in their goal can easily be an engaging story element and create interesting situations, whether or not you choose to label it as 'just for drama's sake'.

Failure is a frustration and obstacle to a desired goal, or even having that goal become impossible to achieve. Failure for failure's sake, or just because of a belief that it would make for interesting drama, only results in fury and anger for those whose goals have just been rendered impossible to attain.
A mistake resulting in a failure is one thing, but what you advocate is intentionally sabotaging success to acquire failure and frustration in order to create what you deem to be interesting situations, but which other players see as situations they want to avoid because it is not the outcome they want.

There is only one possible outcome.
