Ok, few things. Running Monday because of holiday scheduling at work, this won't be a regular new thing, should just be this week. Second, I've got to pick up family from the airport, so I'll be gone for a few hours around... 7 or 8 EST. I'll run a little later to try and make up the time, as well.

As always, I'm in the IRC.

The Bering sea. It's both a blessing and a curse to the men who work it's stormy surface, taking it's fair share of lives over the years.

Not that that concerns you as your powerful fighter rips through the snowsquall without any concern, relishing in the cold air. The witch carrier lags slightly behind and slightly above you, it's pilots having slightly more trouble with the storm. Turbulence must be a bitch you think. Ahead, your tanker awaits, holding on an anchor point a few hundred miles north of Unalaska- the last major island still in US hands in the wake of the invasion.

Apparently passed over for lack of any military airfields, the island has since become a fortress, with short-runway capable C-130s flying in several surface-to-air missile batteries. A pair of air national guard phantom squadrons were brought in more recently, as well as a single air national guard A-7 squadron- from Iowa, of all places. A USN P-3 squadron also calls the cramped airport home now too, and has been actively hunting Soviet submarines with some luck. The air force is guarded on the ground by the presence of a naval Seebee battalion, though their primary mission is apparently the expansion of the nearby Driftwood bay air force station and the runway there, as well as renovation of the mars war-era fortifications on the island. There's also a pair of army national guard infantry units from Montana and Wyoming- odd choices, to be sure, but well accustomed to the cold.

can't believe i forgot my trip. whoops. sorry.

++

All in all, you think, the whole island is very well protected. Better, you hope, than the former US base you're going to attack- which apparently fell within the first few hours of the war, rapidly taken by a soviet paradrop. A small, malicious part of you wonders how many soviet paratroopers drowned, since your target island is tiny. The rest of you rapidly decides it really doesn't care.

Ahead, your tanker-a single USNR EKA-3B- loiters, protected by his own powerful jamming gear more than anything else. You've sudden cause to be thankful for the MC-141's range- he won't need in air refueling to make it to his launch point and home safely. You're also jealous that he'll be home sipping coffee while you're headed home after combat, but such is life.

As you refuel, you take a second to look up into the mirrors in time to see Merlin pop a jolly rancher into her mouth and flip a page in whatever magazine she's reading.

[x] You sure it's a good idea to have those up here? You could choke!

“You sure it's a good idea to have those up here, Merlin?” You ask over the intercom, slightly climbing to start your approach to y our tanker. He's up above the cloud deck- just barely, maybe, but enough so that you've got to fly through the mess of slate-grey clouds before you spot him- still on the westbound leg of his flight.

You look down in time to miss her shrug. “I like Jolly ranchers!” she protests back. “And I know not to eat them when we're close to the target anyway!”

“Fair enough. No more after that one, ok? We're close enough we're gonna have to drop down pretty soon if they've got picket ships. Don't need you choking back there if we've gotta evade a SAM or something, ok?” You say, chuckling.

“Ok, ok.” she says, grudgingly. “I'll finish this last one, then no more.”

“Fair enough,” you respond. “Hey, we're coming up on the tanker. Mind getting us set up?”

“Oh!” She exclaims. “Sorry! Yeah, give me a few seconds.”

A dull thud announces the deployment of your refueling probe, which is one of your many minor complaints. The nose and forward fuselage of the Wyvern is full of crap- a pair of guns, most of your computers, cockpit, landing gear, gun ammo bins, armor- enough stuff that the designers of the bird put the refueling probe back over the right engine intake, with a boom receptacle over the left one.

While it made sense from an engineering standpoint, you guess, it still makes tanking a pain in the ass, though having a RIO helps. Merlin slowly talks you onto the basket, and you're slightly relieved to see the green light on the tanker illuminate, indicating that fuel is flowing into your fighter.

It takes a few minutes to refill your tanks, but eventually you disengage from the probe with a tiny puff of JP-9 fuel. The Skywarrior pilot wags his wings and pulls off, headed home, leaving you free to start your pre-mission approach. The witches won't launch just yet, but they will be soon- less than a hundred miles to go till they're in the air.

Intel wasn't sure if there were Soviet navy picket ships or not, and there's always the possibility of a fighter patrol, and your briefing was explicit about the island having light, but effective, SAM coverage with some limited AA gun presence as well. Still, your approach is up to you.

[x] Go in low, underneath the cloud deck. Keeps you off their radar, but a lot easier to spot visually!

You set your fighter in a shallow dive, descending back through the swirling mass of clouds and into the snowstorm engulfing the region. You'd rather deal with some sparse AA fire than risk SAMs, you think- and with any luck, the weather's canned any flight ops at Shemya, preventing them from keeping a patrol up.

Tension slowly builds as you fly closer- miles melting away underneath your jet, the sea unchanging and the storm growing worse, if anything. Still, you experience nothing worse than slight buffeting from the gale-force winds, though the MC-141's been driven above the cloud deck by the storm.

“Revenant, we're beginning our launch.” Ice calls, finally breaking radio silence. “How's it look out there?”

[x] Wind's pretty brutal below the cloud deck, visibility's hot all to hell.

“Wind is pretty brutal, boss.” you say, looking at the storm outside your cockpit and suddenly thanking the designers of the heating systems in your fighter for their excellent work. “Visibility is shot all to hell and it's probably colder than a wit- very cold.”

“Great” Ice sighs audibly. “Well, it won't matter till we get there. Katya, stay above the clouds with us until we're almost on the target, ok?”

Ice rapidly lays out an attack plan- you can't go supersonic without making your CBUs worthless, and there's an excellent chance you can catch the soviet fighters on the ground with them if you hit them in your first pass. The witches will go in first, find you a good target for the bombs, and let you drop 'em while they worry about other targets.

Alternately, they can all focus on attacking other targets, leaving you free to pick and chose the best places to put your ground attack ordinance- less risk to them, but more to yourself, since you'll be exposed over the island longer.

[x] Go with Ice's plan.

“Sounds good to me.” you say, agreeing with Ice's hastily- sketched out plan. “I'll follow about... twenty seconds behind your first pass, that should give you the time to give me a target or two without leaving your ass out hanging too long.”

“What is it with you and asses?” Slider asks, causing a short ripple of laughter across the squadron- even you get in a few chuckles.

“Ok. We're going to prioritise fighters on the ground, then their fuel dump. If you've got any bombs left after that, we'll try to put them on their ammo dump or something. Clear?”

“Clear.” you respond, toggling your weapons selector over to 'bmb' and double-checking their arming status. They're still set to safe.

You're inside fifty miles when you see the witches break through the cloud deck in their descent and rocket ahead, rapidly breaking the sound barrier and hitting mach one. As they roar away from you, Merlin arms your bombs, preempting your order to do so by a split second.

The next choice is your radar. If you're emitting, they'll detect it, but they'll be under attack by the witches in a second anyway. Still, it could give them the additional warning they need to shoot at you in your own pass.

[x] Leave it cold till after this pass, Merlin.

“Ok Merlin, leave the set cold till after this pass. Fire up the defensive suite though.” you order, checking your straps for third time. You grin at yourself halfway through. Developing a nervous tic, Bishop? You mentally ask.

If you have a response for yourself, you can't think of it.

“Alright, you've got fighters parked in revetments all along the runway!” Ice yells over the radio, over the report of her rifle and the occasional roar of Slider's shotgun. “Nothing's up yet, and Maverick and Goose are taking care of their Air defenses!”

You roar over seconds later, noting the chaos on the ground as the soviet troops madly scramble for aircraft, AA mounts, and SAM batteries, caught woefully unprepared for the sudden attack.

Of the twenty fighters parked in revetments, only four escape your bombs- launched at mid altitude and fast, the combined effects munitions cause horrific damage along their path, wrecking fighters, fuel trucks, and setting off a large secondary that you think might have been an ammo truck brewing up.

Interestingly, though, there's no sign of the 'super flankers'- though the fighters on the ground are Mig-29s, which are frontline assets, they're hardly an advanced flanker. Similarly, there's no sign of the Soviet witches yet, and the flying carrier is nowhere to be seen.

[x] Ice knows as much as we do, and she's our commander anyway. She's got a plan!

“Merlin! Get on the set. This reeks of a setup.” You command, pivoting your fighter around and arming your guns. Right about now, you wish you'd taken the damn runway cratering bombs, but it is what it is.

“Ice, ma'am, you seeing this? No flankers, and no witches.” You say, strafing a pair of the migs as they begin their takeoff roll, causing one to explode outright and the other to shudder to a halt as your 25mm shells chew holes in it's right side, causing the wing to separate from the body and fall to the ground. You try not to notice when the pilot, scrambling away from the wreck, is tossed like a ragdoll when the fighter detonates, it's on board fuel and weapons cooked off by the nearby fire of his former wingmate.

“Yeah, I think intel screwed up bigtime” she says, sending a pair of shots at a ZSU-23-4 and causing it to slew to a halt, smoke pouring from it's engine deck. “WE screwed them up pretty good here anyway. Maverick! Goose! Bug out, make for Dutch harbor!”

“Aye ma'am! We're out of here!” Maverick responds, and you see the twin streaks of their retreating forms pushing into the cloud layer and turn to a south-eastern heading.

[x] Bullshit ma'am, you don't have rear facing radar. You and Slider go, we'll cover you on the way out!

“All due respect, ma'am, I've got a better electronic defensive suite and a rear-facing radar. You two get out, we'll be right behind you.” You say, scanning the wreck of the base on the ground.

“Goddammit Bishop if you-” you cut her off.

“Ice! Just go. This won't be a replay of last time.” You say, searching for bandits. You don't see any, but that doesn't mean they're not out there.

“I... yeah. Ok, Slider! Let's go.” she says, peeling off.

You follow seconds later, wary of following too closely.

For the first ten minutes, your route out is extremely tense. You can practically Feel the flankers and their witches looking for you. You get low enough that you're pretty sure some waves licked the bottom of your bird, and you're trucking along fast enough that the whitecaps below are blurring as they flash by.

But ten minutes turns into twenty, then into thirty, and no aircraft show up. You reform on the squadron, and nothing attacks you. You tank up, and decide to press home to Elmendorf AFB, with all the witches reporting that they feel fine enough to make the trip.

It's almost a shock when you hear the mayday call coming from the base.

“This is elmendorf tower!” the panicked statement is shot through with the whoops and squeals of jamming interference. “One of those Russian supersubs has surfaced in the cook inlet on the west side of fire island! We're under attack! Any elements that can hear this, mayday! Mayday!”

[] Pour it on. You can supercruise easily and your harpoons will do something, at least.

at this time, Canada would have diesel subarines, which in theory would be ideal for this mission, waiting around a coastal harbor, and once they got the sonar ping, firing torpedoes to sink the super-massive vessel [ugh its DC and reactor mus.. how does it even work], but the Oberons are fairly old at this time.

Out in the open sea, where the 688s play, there is a region of water which happens to be quite contested. This is where I went out, a long time ago, and I learned that.. real active sonar sounds nothing like it does in any movie or game, and that we are playing hide and seek with bazookas. I had just qualified, and I was taking a quick nap, when I heard... the sound. It was alien, ghostly really, when I asked "what the fuck, what the fuck," and my sea dad at the time explained, "Oh, its just the CO, he's seeing how far we can get before we reach [the enemy], and get out.

I thought this was going to be a shakedown tour, but I go on watch, and soon find out we need absurd amounts of power, and are going at speeds that were not in any training, before the noises stop. That.. was just the basic day I realized I had signed up for the crazy train, and I didn't even see what happened in forward!

Sinking a carrier.

Carriers are real easy to sink. I suspect someone in the force has made it a law to sink a carrier in drills.

Now, in theory it is nightmare mode, tons of cruisers, destroyers, escorts, helicopters, but with the right skill, and tactical planning, you can go through this defensive net, fire your torpedoes, and escape with a kill. Today's target was a fun one, but we were going alone, to see what new anti submarine tactics we could learn. So, this time the captain wants us to really add insult to injury. Instead of the usual calculate targeting solutions and sink.. we go close, every foot closer to a destroyer or cruiser looking for us, a helicopter hunting for our sounds, the entire fleet looking for one boat. As we close in.. we start running surfacing procedures, and then I realize. we are going to fuckign surface next to the damn carrier. point blank range. this is insane, but the boat does so, and we put up the flag, before one watchstander realizes what we have done. I think we won, I think we did.
>>
>>22091942

south america is nightmare mode, since we do not.. stop moving, yay no good shore power. Now, this means bad shore watch rotations, and I was a step above nub and shit tier status. So that means I had to get used to keeping the ship company. Now, because one gets bored doing this, you start to joke about the outside world.

Someone one day apparently brings over a truck with a generator, a good thing for us since we can get off the ship, normal, but being in south america.. shit is off. The Wiring is in Spanish, the truck looks sketchy, but it works.. untill it decides to fail. Now, it wouldn't be so bad, but the crowds nearby stare, the dockworkers moving closer, and the nub on watch looks nervous, untill they all.. pile on the generator, and start to work on it. I was still watching this from the cables in awe, because apparently, generator repair is a skill that is taught.

[x] “Ice? What's the plan?”

“Ice...?” You ask, earning you a frustrated look from your CO.

“Those things are huge, bishop. Do you even have anything that would dent one?” She asks, shrugging. “We're strung out. Maybe if it were aircraft, we'd be fine but that thing?”

“I've got a pair of harpoons.” You say, desperately. “They'd do something, right?”

“I don't know...” she says, doubt clear in her voice. “That thing is awful huge, and knowing the Russians it's got point-defense everywhere.”

“If it's a nuke sub...” you start, then stop, realising just how stupid that is- seconds before Slider points it out.

“Oh, yeah. Let's try to shoot a nuke sub's reactors this close to the most populated city in Alaska, not to mention our base! Place would be lethally hot for centuries genius!” She says.

“ok, ok. Bad idea. What about it's tower?” You ask, not willing to give this up.

>>

Might be meta, depending on whether the capability is known but this thing launches planes.

We can dump the harpoons into its hanger. Maybe cause secondaries.
>>
>>22095986
might be nukes on board I would not risk it
>>
>>22096054
Doubt it besides the reactor, I remember the vast majority of nukes are under various lock and keys and the people at command are very hesitant to use them.
>>
>>22095881
a hit on its nuclear reactors will NOT cause a nuclear explosion assuming the Russian's reacotrs are activley safe (they aren't if they are what I think they are, which means they.. well you could if you got intel fire a precise hit to disable the reactor, forcing the ship to land because it would overheat otherwise!) Otherwise, you risk fission product release, which isn't THAT bad if you contain the blast radius/prevent the core from breaking.
>>
>>22095881
Listen to the boss lady, be ready to dump those Harpoons. Also: argue our case if we have to, but we shouldn't shoot without permission from the Ice Lady.
>>
>>22095881
It's a fucking sub.

If you punch big holes in it with missiles, it either stays on the surface the whole way back home (turning it into a big fat target) or it can submerge one more time and then not come back up.

Subs are not resilient warships.
>>
>>22096065
nuclear missiles are.. well they won't explode if they are damaged, you again risk the release of fission products though, but its not a likely thing to happen.
>>
>>22096074
Also, forgot to mention: as a fucking sub, point-defense is problematic. Either it all has to be internal, in which case it's severely limited in size and ammo capacity compared to normal PD, or it's external, in which case your sub now has a sonar signature slightly less stealthy than a pod of dolphins raping a pregnant whale.
>>
>>22096070
Agreed.

I'm in favour of shooting, if only because the kind of radioactive spillage they're afraid of is unlikely, but that's meta-ish.

But yeah.
>>
>>22096115
>a pod of dolphins raping a pregnant whale.

Knowing the shit people pick up on Sonar, there's probably a recording of that somewhere.
>>
>>22095881
also, this is more of a character question, because this will determine if Ice would ICLy know this or not, is Ice eligible to command a carrier/possibly slated for a Carrier Command slot? [is she s PXO or not], if so, she would know enough about how reactors work to know how to deal with it.
>>
>>22096066

I'm not sure a harpoon could even penetrate far enough to damage the reactor proper. This thing has to have a multiple-hull configuration ala the Typhoons, I would think.
>>
Hit it in the torpedoes. IIRC, those are prone to becoming secondary explosions when hit by missiles.
>>
>>22096155
Water intakes.

It probably uses sea water for coolant.

Scrag those, they have to shut down the reactor or it melts.
>>
>>22096204

its a submarine on the surface/in ports. If you are going to kill submarines, you kill them on the surface, a submarine's weak spot is on the surface, where high speed aircraft can kill it, satellites can track it.. all those fun things.

They wouldn't have a specific 'water intake for the reactor is here, destroy it to render the submarine useless' point, for obvious reasons.

Anybody else remember hunting for a carrier we were sure was there back in ZeonQuest?

Remember how that turned out?

...yeah, let's stick with killing the shit we know is here.
>>
>>22096578
I was just thinking of that, yeah.
>>
>>22096574
they used tomcats!?
>>
>>22096578
Except Fronk doesn't have any sort of real command authority so that's not an issue.

[x] Let her finish. Maybe there's a plan cooking?

“But there's no such thing as unkillable. Even something that big can die. We just gotta figure out how!” She finishes.

You're somewhat underwhelmed. “Providing it doesn't blow us all out of the sky.” you mutter. “Alright, but if it looks like we're gonna bingo... “

“Fair enough.” Ice responds. “We... gods, what IS that?” You follow her pointing arm to the underside of a cloud, lit by flickering, flashing light.

It takes a second for you to piece it together- and you realize you're about to get a show.

“MLRS!” you crow. “The army had those fucking launcher batteries brought up here! Holy hell, that's a lot of rockets.”

You can't help but cheer as you watch the sub shudder, the waters of the cook inlet ripped into a froth by the impact of hundreds of 227mm rockets. Still, it launches more of it's own missiles, and a pair of jets appear just behind it, apparently launched from a covered flight deck in the aft sections of the ship.

“There! It's got fighters. Bishop, can you hit the flight deck?”

“That'd be a hell of a shot, ma'am.” you drawl, peering down through the smoke at the huge sub. The launch doors are still open, but you can be sure they're defended by point-defense systems.

“We can make it, Frank.” Merlin says from behind you.

“That squares it, then.” you mutter. “Ok, keep it's shit off me, I'll wheel it around and jam these harpoons right in it's ass.”

>>
“What is it with you and asses?” Slider asks again.

“Ha-ha. You're just mad I won't-” You quip.

“That's quite enough of that.” Ice cuts in before you can finish.

You cut south, hoping the damn thing won't turn before you can line up. Normally, this stage isn't necessary- a pair of harpoons would be enough to kill a ship by it's self- or set it up for an easy kill, anyway.

Then again, normally you aren't shooting at something this damn BIG. The MLRS fire hurt it- you could see clear damage on it- but it's a heavily armored beast, and apparently takes more killing than that.

You cut back to the north in a hard turn, kicking both your harpoons loose within a second of each other. Both glow the faint blue that's become indicative of Merlin’s magic. Seconds before impact, you watch a spiderweb of tracers erupt from the ship near the hangar doors- and two small, almost disappointing puffs of smoke erupt from the hangar.

“Damn, that barely looks like we dented it.” You mutter. “Well, good shot any-” You're cut off by a colossal explosion- a slowly curling mushroom cloud erupting over the wreckage of the sub.

“Oh jesus oh damn.....” you gasp, fighting the shockwave and trying to stay stable. “Was that a.....”

“No.” Ice says, voice hard and certain. “It was just a big damn conventional explosion. Maybe hit the jet fuel bunkers, or their magazines. Hard to tell.”

“good work, Bishop.” she says, looking back at you again.

[] Wasn't me, ma'am. That one's Merlin's.
[] Can't take all the credit. Merlin and I are a team, remember?
[] So, can I paint a sub on the side of my fighter now?

I see the "team" remark as reaffirming the general teamwork between them, not any sort of glory hunting

Yeah, even with sparkle-enhanced harpoons, there's no way we should have been able to one-shot that damned thing. I smell a rat.

Yeah. It is absolutely not dead yet. We need to continue bugging out and rearm, or start looking to fend off its air cover, one.

“I can't hardly take the all the credit, ma'am” You say, surveying the wreckage from above. You don't see a whole lot of survivors. “I just set up the shot and pushed the button. Merlin did the rest.”

“Well, good work, the both of you.” Ice says.

“Hey, can I paint a sub on the side of my jet now?” You ask, grinning beneath your mask.

“Right now, Bishop, you can do whatever you want.” Ice says, sounding suddenly tired.

“Whatever I want, huh?” You drawl.

“Save it for later, Bishop. Let's just get on the ground.”

One runway is completely out of commission- strewn with craters and debris from the missile attacks. Strangely, for such a large submarine, it was only able to target the airbase, though there's heavy damage to both Elemndorf, Kulis air national guard base, down at the airport, and Merril field, which isn't useful for anything but choppers, really.

Up in the northern part of the state, the first major attacks were successful, demolishing the soviet line and forcing them into a hasty withdrawal, with their new defense centered on Tanana. In the north, at least, everything was as expected, with the soviets suffering severe casualties, and withdrawing in disarray.

The worst news comes later. In light of your successes, and of a squadron being freed up from the fleet, yours is being moved.

Your new duty station? Driftwood bay. About 30 miles west of Dutch harbor. In the Aleutian islands.

You're less than thrilled.

I get the feeling it's like getting rewarded with a piece of shit (as in a steaming pile of greenish brown...)

and that's it for the night!

Sorry about the intermission there, it was dumped on me well after I'd said Monday was our run day, so it was either that or postpone the quest till later in the week.

anyway, hope you all enjoyed, and I'll see you again next... oh, wait, next Tuesday is Christmas, isn't it? Well, I can run then anyhow. either then or Monday again, depending.

anyway, later on guys, come chat in the IRC if you want. if not, I'll catch ya next week.

Monday sounds better as most people would get stuck with family stuff; I'd be surprised if there were people who weren't.
