Welcome one and all to another glorious day in the majestic city state of Silverdale, capitol of the great barony. Today our intrepid company is going to have to present their engine to the great bureaucracy of Silverdale and attempt to win a contract with them to start dragging themselves into the upper echelons on this terrifying city.

Now, here we have the archive: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Refrek%20Spine%20Snapper

Some folk just stick your heads in and we'll begin the game soon enough.
>>
Rolled 88

>>22122722
yeah, lets do it!
>>
Some suggestions on how to keep your updates smaller.

We don't get "special" characters, equipmnet or building that often, so it's better to post that info once in the OP and not repost it every update.
The list of actions should be just posted once in the OP (so that people know/remember what we can choose) and you end the update with just "What Action will you choose?"
"Possible purchases" could go the same way and only be reposted when something about them changes. Same thing with alliances.

That way you can keep your status updates just to one or two posts.
>>
>>22122836
I have already come up with a way to slim it, so we're good. Also, one more and we will begin.
>>
>>22122864

Oh, that's great.

...Now, lets hope some more people turn up
>>
>>22122907
Yup!

*looks around*

Just you wait...
>>
IF NO ONE SHOWS UP I'LL START SAMEFAGGING WITH DIFFERENT NAMES!!
...
Seriously, where's everybody?
>>
>>22123021
Don't do that, but I can't justify doing the quest without three people. If it's two it'll come down to two opinions and getting no where. Three i the minimum for proper civ threadness...

I'll wait another fifteen minutes (honestly I think the game might be a tad complicated and is scaring people off).
>>
>>22123058

Bleh, there's nothing complicated about this civ. Just a bit different that's all.

Sometimes people show up an hour later or so, lets give it some time.
>>
>>22123113
Ok, I'll keep monitoring. As soon as enough people show up I'll start it. I can probably only run the thread until 8pm PST. So if it starts at three that's only 5 hours of thread.
>>
>>22123145
Dang....
well, I'll stick around then.
>>
>>22123058

Why don't you, I dunno, just flip a coin where's no clear consensus?
>>
>>22123264
>>22123244
I've done it with only two before, it gets boring due to lack of opinions. Also, if there is only enough support for two people, I don't know... doesn't seem worth running. I'm doing a bunch of projects so I think I'll do one of those instead (namely the Fringe Dark Heresy Adaption)
>>
>>22123321

Damn, I love Company Civ and wouldn't want it gone.... but if no one participates. Fuck.
>>
You know what, fuck it.... we can do it with two people.

I'll post the first turn report, once more into the breech everyone.
>>
>>22123398
Oh, great. Some more people ought to join later (hopefully).
>>
>>22123398
I HAVE COME! REJOICE!

Action Points: THREE
What will you choose to do?

A) Search for a job.
B) Company alliances.
C) Go out to hire people.
D) Research into a new product for the market.
E) Business venture.
F) Go to Invest in a company.
G) Other.
H) Ask Grandfather for advice (free action)

(Ok, fifteen minutes and I will close votes)
>>
Imma go repost my suggestion from previous thread.

>D) Research into a new product for the market.

Make the engines more powerful so they can pull more weight. Would be useful

>D
R&D toys further. Make different versions. Make toys for boys and girls. For boys, we will make the typical toy-soldier stuff, toys that can fight with each other but don't actually damage anything (especially the kids!). For girls we will make toy-houses and appropriate props and doll designs, basically Sims where they have limited control over the life of the toys.
Also, all toys include switch-off, protection from tampering and make them secure (no toys moving around at night scaring the kids shitless)

then
>G
produce and sell the toy

then
>H
Get advice on how to improve our chances at the train contract. He might even suggest what we improve next.

Also, buy a market stall
>>
>>22123443
How much is upkeep again? 30 Tarlings?
>>
>>22123519
90 now with three buildings.
>>
>>22123467
These are good suggestions, but do we need to continue researching the engine?
Don't we have a good solid product already?

I think it would be better to probe what our competitors have and if it is better in some way, try to improve it.
So that would be
>G) Gather information about our competitors products.
>>
>>22123538
Oh.... scratch buying market stall then. I don't know how much money that will bring us each turn, without knowing that, we might bankrupt ourself.

>>22123575
Alright, I can live with that.
>>
R&D ideas for later:MagiTech Security Alarms and an Alarm function for our watches.
>>
>>22123428
Yeah, I do rejoice
Now give us some suggestions!
>>
>>22123625
>MagiTech Security Alarms

How would that work?
>>
>>22123644
Dunno yet. It was just a random idea.

>>22123467
>>22123575
these sound good. Just don't buy a market stall.
>>
I've got an idea for later too.

We should totally pimp up the elemental suits to suit the Royal House of Ash better. First, we make them look much more magnificent, improve their aesthetic design to represent the elemntals in their full glory.
We also make them work better with the elementals, having direct portals to the plane of Ash, so that they can use it to empower their natural abilities. Also, putting in some devices that let them cast their spells with much more finesse.
And maybe some other things I can't think off.

Then we sell another batch.
>>
>>22123467
Ok, so we're going with toys, selling toys, and corporate espionage?
>>
>>22123776
Seems like it.
>>
>>22123443
Lets see what grandpappy has to say
>>
>>22123776
And don't forget some advice from granpa!
Because I'm running out of ideas how to improve our engine further.
>>
Mousy doesn't exactly enjoy the fact that her creations have inspired such infatuation with the rest of the company, all she had wanted to do was play with them with Grac while on her break. Now she was being forced to make dozens of them and get them ready to sell them in the shop. After making so many she had begun to get good at it, improving the rune work so that their movements were more fluid and streamlined, and so that an incompetent handler would not scratch them off and so render the entire toy useless.

After the first few dozen the toys began appearing in the shops and carts. There were are a big hit among children, who love watching the toys run around and get in petty squabbles (no one enjoys wanton cruelty like a child does). In the lower shops they easily sell, and even in the higher shops wealthy patrons are buying the toys (as children yell for them and parents don't have time to explain a social stigma against magi tech and the inner workings of met apolitical landcapery bullshit).
>>
>>22123862
>children
And thus starts our propaganda campaign.
>>
>>22123862
In the dead of night several of your employees sneak over to the workshop of the Royal Engineering Guild to see exactly what they were working on. The place doesn't seem very well guarded and they are able to head over to a window to see inside. What they see isn't exactly encouraging. Their machine seems as good as yours, the engines have increased in size to allow for more speed, and some kind of ice cartridge system is replicating your AC units. All in all it isn't looking good.

===========

~SPECIAL EVENT~

On the other side of town at the train depot something is wrong, the golem goes dark. THe next day when people arrive they find a rune in the center of the gorlm's chest, effectively shutting it off. It isn't a big deal and once they remove it there doesn't seem to be anything else wrong. however in the shop is more perplexing, the engine has been vandalized, runes scuffed out and stuff painted n the side. With only two more weeks to go till showing day this isn't a good sign.

And what about Grandfathers advice?

>>22124005
>D) Research into a new product for the market.
Here's a suggestion. Instead of trying to improve the stats of of our engine, we should also improve its LOOKS! Presentation can play amazing role in this, if our design looks much better than others (we will improve it according to modern fads), it might be the edge we need to get the contract.
So lets get on it!
>>
>>22124052
(shit, forgot about grandpappy... he was asleep when you went over and Archiold didn't want to disturb him... yeah, that's it)
>>
>>22124005
>D) Research into a new product for the market.
Okay, I think the speed of the train is the most important aspect. The faster it is, the quicker people get to their jobs, the speedier the deliveries will be, the better the economy will grow.
So lets try to increase the speed of our train.

>>22124052
Okay, that sounds fine.

Hmm.... what else could we do to improve the train further?
Automacy? At least semi-automacy? We got golemancy, so we could somehow incorporate that into our trains and they would run much more efficiently!
>>
>>22124064
Heh, okay.
Lets ask him THIS turn at least?
Better yet, lets ask him right now! Maybe we will change our choices depending what he says.
>>
>>22123928
Hopefully ours is cheaper to make, we did spend a research action making it cheaper to produce.

Maybe this time we could try to make it more durable? Easier to maintain?
>>
>>22124132
Grandpa barely wakes up form his nap, rubbing sleep from his eyes. You tell him what has happened in the past week.

"Then get to repairing that prototype of yours! They vandalized the engines, you need to fix it to have something to show! Also, don't let those sneaky hits get away with this, you need to be careful and stealthy, but an eye for an eye. Make sure they don't have anything to show either."
>>
>>22123958
>Current Jobs: Shops and Such: (Brings in 60 Tarrlings per turn, occupies 4 employee.)

This is a great bump from our previous income! The toys really did pay themselves off!
Our shopkeepers are keeping up with the demand, right?
>>
>>22124005
-Fix the Engine
-Improve the Speed
-Sabotage those fuckers
>>
>>22124211
>>22124236

I was kinda under assumption that if we keep doing R&D on the engine further, it will be fixed anyway. That makes sense, right? You need pretty much overhaul and rebuild the whole thing anyway to improve it, why waste time repairing an engine which will be obsolete anyway?

Also, move Poncho to the depot
>>
>>22124235
Yes they are, but Mousy is being worked to the bone. She won't be able to keep this up forever if she is the only one who can produce golem tech.
>>
>>22124276
That will just give you new prototype designs. You need to spend a point actually repairing if you want the thing to look good again. They scratched it up with graffiti. Research won't give you a new coat of paint.
>>
>>22124278
Can she teach others golemancy? We did teach Eric runesmithing before, right?
>>
>>22124236
>>22124307

Hmm, how do we even know which competitors did this?
And this might be a trap too, now that I think about it.
>>
>>22124315
Yes, you can teach people. It will sometimes happen randomly through actions, but you can spend a action to teach it as well.
>>
>>22124337
Good point. Revising
-Fix the Engine
-Improve the Speed
-Assign Mousy some apprentices.
>>
>>22124347
Ok guys, 15 minutes are up, give me a finalized decision.
>>
>>22124347
I see.
Well, we can teach more people after we deal with the train contract.

Question, do the trains produce a lot of noise (for the outside and the passengers) and do they sway a lot making it uncomfortable for the passengers to stay upright?
>>
>>22124403
-fixing the engine
-improving the speed

>>22124388
I can't agree with giving Mousy apprentices at the moment. We have an important contract right now, if it seems that Mousey is going to burn out, we just spend a week without making toys so that she can rest.

We should keep improving the train. I like the pimp up idea >>22124052

Yeah, and improve the security by moving Pancho and Grac into depot.
>>
>>22124443
I will agree to this.
>>
>>22124443
>>22124455
yeah, this works
>>
>>22124337
Probably the competitors dabbling in Arcane. They knew exactly how to disable a magical golem.
>>
With only a week left until the great unveiling the entire company resolves itself to fix up the engine. Every free employee, and those who can spare the time, pile into the train depot to do their part. A new coat of paint and further improvements to the engine are done. With a finalized rune matrix they are able to eek out just a bit more speed from the engines, the matrix is so complex that Eric can barely understand Archibold's spell work, however after a solid week of observing his rune work he starts to get the idea. Yaril goes out and tries to observe the fads of the day, and what seems to have caught on is the use of whale leather in clothing and fabric. After repurchasing shipment of it all the benches inside the car are done up in whale leather and the air condition improved with climate control. All in ll the entire engine looks good, also to ensure no more break ins occur both Poncho and Grac are stationed in the train depot at all times to watch out for any sign of either group trying to make a move.

~Final Train Model gained, Eric gained 1 level in runesmithing. Is now a level 2 runesmith.~
>>
>>22124531
>550 Tarllings.

This should be 616

>>22124518
Do we need to spend an action for the Special event this turn (the train contract) or can we pile them all into more research?
>>
>>22124583
No, you must spend a point to head over to and present your goods.

We make suggestions now, yes?

-More research into the engine and its speed. This time focus on technological part, the gears the hydraulics, the works. Make them more efficient. Basically more bang for the buck.
>>
>>22124645
Golems can perform rudimentary tasks. However they can not do spell work (as they have no mana to fuel it). So they can make and assemble things, but it needs to be a short repeatable task.
>>
>>22124639
>No, you must spend a point to head over to and present your goods.
Do we have to do it this turn or the next one?

>>22124645
We might be able to develop new kind of golems which we program to perform specific tasks. We could even make train conductors!

>>22124651
>D)
Make our trains more durable (can run much longer before they need to be maintained or scrapped) and easier to maintain.
>>
>>22124731
This turn.
>>
>>22124673
The second bit isn't so much an issue once you introduce the assembly line. Golems are perfect for it, just doing the same task over and over.
>>
We'll do that after we get extra help on our golem departement then.
Research on increasing the engine stability and reliability. also some counter measure in case of another sabotage, had a feeling they will try to screw with us again during the presentation.
>>
>>22124753
I see. So it is pretty much locked that we do the special event now. That leaves 2 more actions.
I guess we spend time developing the engine more, nothing else to do. I don't want risk sabotaging other trains either.

As far as I can see it the suggestions are
>>22124672
More speed
>gotta go fast

>>22124731
And making trains last longer and easier to repair.

Anyone has other ideas?
>>
Ok everyone, time's up. What are you going with?
>>
>>22124807
>Research on increasing the engine stability and reliability.

I think we did that before. Right now, if something does happen to the engine, the planes just close themselves and there is no risk of the engine exploding.
>>
>>22124821
-Improve speed(look at the tech side)
-Improve durability/ease of maintenance
-Present Goods
>>
>>22124840
All points on train research. Engine improvement and extra security
>>
>>22124851
This, basically. I hope we did good.

How about we throw all of our free employees into marketing and advertisement so that we can try to influence the outcome this way too? We don't need to spend an action on this (I think)
>>
>>22124887
forgot to put present the train.
>>
And if we do lose, it is not that much of a loss. Hopefully we don't but it wont be something to beat our head over.
>>
Once this is done, we should expand our toy-line
>>
Eric tries to improve the speed once more, but after his last improvement there is simply no more power to be got from the engines. It's going to go as fast as you'll get it. Instead he begins working on making the entire system more easily maintained, making it so that the parts easily unhook from each other to expose the spell work if any of them were to degrade and need rewriting. The systems will be easier to fix if they break down, hopefully it's durable enough however that breakdowns won't happen often.

==========

Grac picks up the entire engine and car and carries it behind the group as they head towards the great bureaucracy. Archibold seems nervous in his suit, still wearing the goggles in case something goes wrong between leaving the depot and making it to the presentation. Once they show the bade they are waved inside and make their way towards the designated showing area. The old elf stands looking at the three groups, the other two already seemed to have arrive.

The groups regard you with stranger looks, the magi seemingly worried, the engineers astonished that you managed to carry the entire engine to the meeting (the other two simply brought smaller engine prototypes). A small smile curls on the elf's lips before her starts.

"Now now, none of this commotion. I'd first like to see yours," he turns to the magi. They make their case showing of a way of recharging the crystals over the course of a year so that the rails all run like before. THe elf nods, knowing that this will be cheaper than changing out the whole system. Next he turns to the royal engineers and they too make their case, showing off the air conditioning and large engines. FInally he turns to you.

"So, what about your... devise?"

> Make your case, sell it.
>>
>>22125053
"Speed, Reliability, Safety, Comfort & Cost efficiency in one package"
>>
>>22125150
Don't forget low fuel costs and the fact that in the same amount of time it took for our competitors to make smaller prototypes we made a fulling functional model.
>>
>>22125202
>>22125150
We need a finalized idea here, 5 more minutes.
>>
>>22125053
Well, since we actually bought the thing with us (I assume the passenger car too) we can actually invite him inside the car, open the engine and show the intricacies of its work and even turn it on (without making it move). This will help sell our product better.
-Tell him what speed our train can get. We basically reached the maximum speed possible (for now)
-Tell him that it doesn't require any kind of fuel or whatsoever, it runs directly on the energy of the planes. But that doesn't mean the arcane crystal rails have become completely obsolete. We worked to include them in design, they improve the efficiency of the system.
-Our AC is adjustable, we can put the temperature at whatever level we want to and can even heat up the cars in case of a really cold winter. During the hot days, having the train in station actually cools it. Also, we have a nifty clock inside.
-We spent a lot of time, making sure that the trains wont cost city much. We made the parts easier to produce (thus cheaper), made sure that they last much longer and are very easy to maintain. We can actually show him the simplicity of the design
-Let him see the pimped up car for himself. He KNOWS that the rich people should love it.
-We made sure our engines are safe. They are very hard to malfunction and if they do, they simply shut down.

-Tell him that there are more ways we can improve it in the future. (Automation, comfort, etc)

The old elf nods and turns away before saying, "I will make my decsision, please excuse me for a moment." The old frail elf climbs the stairs back towards his office, and for several minutes stays there. In the meantime Archibold whispers to the magi.

"I know what you did."

"What?"

"You tried to sabotage our engine." The head magi glares back, then looks towards his fellows.

"We didn't do any sabotaging!" The royal engineers pipe up behind them, their leader, a large bearded man, stepping forward.

"Now now, we can't fight unduly. Let us just have the old man decide and we go from there. No finger point will help either of you now." The groups fall silent and wait, eventually the elf emerges once more, holding two slips of paper. One he hands to Archibold, the old to the bearded man from the.

"I've decided to let you both have a go. A single company won't be able to handle the job... besides... the competition will do you good. Inside you'll a payment so you may begin production. I expect the system renovated in one year's time."

"First and fore-most, the most important part, our engines simply do not run out of power. Once they start, they can go forever without the need of recharging. As you know, the elemental planes have practically unlimited amount of free energy.
Using this we were able to maximize the speed of the trains. At this point they can go up to [max speed] with no problem without taxing the engine.
While this would suffice for the contract we were given, we went several steps beyond. We know that the city government can't simply print money and taking that into considerations, our researchers spent many weeks making the engine cheap to produce and easy to maintain. Replacing the old engines with these will actually save you budget in [x time]!
But cheap does not mean less quality! Our engines are durable and by our estimation can operate for [x time] before needing maintenance and can go for decades before even considering to scrapping them! In the very unlikely event that something does go wrong, instead of the traditional BOOOM!, our engines will just go *poof* and shut down.
Last but not least, we thought about the passengers. Who wants a train that no one will ride? Come inside and see!
We put in our advanced climate control technology so that in any weather, the inside will stay and comfortable temperature. Besides that, our seats are more comfortable than ever!"

What exactly do we have to do now? Make new trains each turn?

Also, you forgot to include the new job into the job list.
>>
>>22125560
remove 16 employees from R&D
put 4 more into security

buy a market stall

>>22125594
>G) Other.

>G) Other.
>A Baron's Tale: Try to fix the bureaucracy, is a free form offer.
Bring Kallen to the administration office again. Have her study this place much more thoroughly and help us identify problems which we can solve. (We can't improve it in one go, we need to do this in several steps. Would be easier if we had an idea what to work on)
>>
>>22125621
You can buy a building and create a factory/assembly line and do it automatically. If you spend points automating a system you no longer have to spend points to keep doing it.
>>
>>22125725
Okay, lets do that then.
Buy a factory and develop and assembly line.

I assume that will be an action, right?
>>
>>22125594

-Research Automation
-Have Mousey teach golemancy
>>
>>22125594
How many employees do we need for the next ACTION level? And how much taxes will we have to pay then?
>>
>>22125828
Taxes double each bracket [brackets don't always come at the same time action points do]. The next action point will be gained at 150 employees. Instead however of getting abnormal action point, next time you gain your first "corporate" action point. Which will have special properties that I will explain later.
>>
>>22125878
>Taxes double each bracket [brackets don't always come at the same time action points do]

When does next bracket come then?

And what is that new job we got? I'd liek to experiment a bit with it and determine the optimal amount of workers.

>>
>>22125935

Dang, so it will be a while before we try to get next action point.

Shit, we have too many employees with nothing to do. We need to search for new jobs!
>>
>>22125594
>400 Tarllings: Slavery Exempt License, purchase for you and your employees a placard that makes you slavery exempt. Most of the upper class of the city has these for themselves.

but we already bought this! I want to see what next upgrade will be!

Also, you keep putting this into you copy-pasta
>easily recognize your company. (bonus to business relations)

Anyway, lets do this >>22125782
And don't buy a factory yet

The group gets to work creating a new model of the train you had previously done. This one is a near exact copy of the prototype, save for having half a dozen passenger cars instead of only one. The leather for the system costs a fair amount, but all in all it is completed within the week and put onto the rails.

Mousy, tired of having to do everything herself all the time, making some of her automatons able to make more of themselves. These in turn make more, and more. "I don't wanna." Archibold stares across the table at Mousy, mildly confused and more than a little annoyed. he had brought up the idea of her teaching others how to do golemancy, but she seemed extremely opposed to it.

"Why?"

"Because this is what I do best, if a bunch of other people can do it then I'm special any longer." Archibold starred at the girl before standing up, placing his hands on the table.

"Look here, you work for this company. You nee to teach others how to do golemancy." The small elf girl crossed her arms and looked away, beginning to pout.

"No." Archibold thought for a moment.

"Please?"

"No."

"I'll let you ride Poncho."

"...really?"

"Yes."

"Ok I'll do it."

>Trains Make The World Go Round: Forty-eight turns remain until you must have the new train system completed. The bureaucracy must see periodic progress... or you face losing the contract

How many trains do we need to make for this anyway? And is making more trains practically the only thing we must do?
>>
>>22126144
>A) Search for a job.

We have a legal expert, lets branch into a Law firm.
>>
>>22126234
You must have completed a total of

50 trains, created facilities to maintain trains, and have designated and trained a work force to do so.
>>
>>22126216
5 more minutes until I lock in the votes.
>>
>>22126393
>created facilities to maintain trains

Isn't our depot enough for this? And if we do make new facilities, they will be turned over to the government so that we don't have to pay maintenance, right?

>and have designated and trained a work force to do so.
Not sure how this will work. do we hire people and put them on our payroll for this? That seems too costly. And how many people should we train?
>>
>>22126479
Nope, your depot was a workshop where you built one train. It's can't house or handle 50 trains worth of maintenance.

You need to hire people and get them trained. 15 should be enough. You have 48 turns to finish this, so I think you'll be fine.
>>
>>22126216
Should we overhaul our manufacturing just yet? Perhaps we should buy a factory first so that we don't have to build assembly line twice?

Lets do the special offer "bureaucracy" first. Have our catgirl analyze this problem more and give us specific list of things we should improve.
>>
>>22126507

Oh, so basically we need to R&D a maintenance facility, with the tools and equipment that it would need to handle our trains and then build it? But do we need to pay for it, or for the building grounds? We are doing this for the government so I wouldn't want to spend money out of our own pockets for this.

>>22126516
I'm okay with this. Was gonna suggest that soon anyway.
>>
>>22126587
You need to do it yourself. If you get the building created and maintained the amount the government will pay you will cover the factory and then some.
>>
>>22126634
So we have:

D) Research assembly lines
G) Construct said assembly line
G) Send kallen to the bureaucracy to learn about their inter workings.
>>
>>22126634
Alright then.

Will we have to build separate building for the factory with the assembly line and this maintenance facility?

>>22126678
Looks right.
>>
Guess we need some more jobs.

OP, if we just choose the action to search for jobs without specifying, will it work?
>>
Yaril watches the toys assemble themselves and comes up with an idea, if they took the larger golems and put them into a similar configuration, except putting together trains instead of toys, then they could possibly outstrip the engineer's construction abilities by a wide margin. He goes to Mousy with the idea, and though he finds her asleep at the time she agrees (upon being woken up) to get on the idea. She constructs several large golems with the help of Grac and put them together with enough complicated rune casting for them to perform simple tasks over and over, these tasks perfect for trains. They have enough thought process that they are able to do something if a minor problem occurs, but if anything major happens the assembly will stop.

~six Assembly Golems gaines!~

===========

Kallen heads back to the great bureaucracy to try and find out exactly what was going wrong, surely there was some deeper problem than merely the baron leaving if it was just that everyone would have continued using the newest version of tax law and that would have been the end of it, but as things were now the place was so disorganized she didn't know what to do.

After hours of searching through a mountain of invoices that stretched up towards the ceiling she finally began to piece together information on what was going on. After the baron in the bureaucracy the next in charge was the great adding machines, and without a baron to acquisition funds to repair them they have been slowly breaking down and giving incorrect calculations... leading to this entire mess. She looked back over her shoulder.

"Oh no." Even from where she sat atop the mountain the lake of oil pouring from one of the hundred foot high machines was clearly visible. What ever they were going to do to fix this, it would be a monuments undertaking.
