Couple of things- we'll be back on our regular schedule Tuesday, so this strange scheduling should be over pretty soon. Second, and more importantly, I hope everyone had themselves a good Christmas or whatnot. Me, I've been eating leftovers all week. haha!

Anyway, Character sheet here: http://pastebin.com/zFxWNup1
Archives here: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Strike+witches+1989

As always, I'm sitting in the IRC, though I don't talk much when it's time to run.

++

Your new home is something of a sideways step from your place at Elmendorf.

A last-second change saw you rebased at Adak, instead of Driftwood bay. The former naval air base had fallen to the soviets early on, but elements of the 2nd Marine division re-took it with minimal losses- and a huge naval seabee presence worked nearly round-the-clock to rebuild the base and turn it into the leading westernmost US post. If you were to look up at the nearby mountains, you'd clearly see SAM batteries and infantry positions- this place is a fortress.

And maybe rightfully so. The building you're quartered in is brand new construction- and clearly built to house more than your unit. You'd remarked on it to Ice when you were shown your new home- she only shrugged.

The building is a four-winged, H shaped affair with a central common area equipped with a dining room and kitchen. Each of the wings holds a dozen rooms- six on each side- with two racks apiece. While it's not exactly spacious, it's a step up from your small quonset hut, sadly destroyed in the attack on Elmendorf. Most of your stuff survived- it was a near miss, not a direct hit- and all the presents in their bag made it through unscathed- you made sure they got loaded along with your personal gear on one of the cargo birds helping move supplies and crews to Adak.

Roomates broke down pretty naturally- the only major hiccup was when Ice suggested Merlin and Katya share a room, so you could have one to yourself. You weren't actually downstairs when that happened- you were upstairs checking out your new squadron offices and briefing room, and the Lounge and recreation room that occupied the central area on the second floor, but Maverick later said Merlin was uncharacteristically forceful in insisting she be allowed to share your room. It was only settled when Slider was sent to get you, and you were able to intervene before any screaming could start.

Right now, you're in the common shower area at the end of your squadron hall, enjoying the deliciously hot water supplied by the building's heaters and a brand new desalination plant built to support the base.

Your new base has one major fault- it's very, very remote. Enough so that you're starting to consider trying to talk Ice into scaring you up a squadron hack- a utility aircraft, something that's not needed elsewhere- for minor supply runs and administrative work. Right now though, she's at a commander's briefing, and you're not sure when she's going to get back from that. A few hours, you figure, at least. Alternately, you suppose you could explore the island around the base- there's lots of old construction here as well, and maybe there's something in an old hangar. The last option would be to do without, and just try and get everything done you need to with the regular airlift flights. It'll save you time right now, but could be a pain in the ass later on.

[x] Wait and talk to Ice. If nothing else, she can at least find out where to look! (You can explore your new housing while you wait)

You decide it's far, far too cold outside to be fucking around exploring the base- you can do that maybe later, when it warms up. If it ever does.

Instead, you figure now's as good a time as any to get to know the layout of your new housing- which is nice and warm, with an excellent heating system and good insulation. You'll have to buy the Seabees a drink later, you think. The place really doesn't feel like it was put up in less than a week.

Thankfully, today is one of the few you're not really on alert. Here, this close to the front, that just means you've got twenty minutes to be in your bird and ready for takeoff, instead of sitting in the ready shack on the five minute alert. You're not sure who has that job today, but whoever it is, you're glad it's not you.

Still, you put on a flight suit when you get out of the shower- twenty minutes may be longer than five, but it's still not enough time to really be fucking around trying to change.

You drop your towel off in your room- Merlin's in there, reading some sci-fi book or other. She looks up when you open the door, marking her place with her finger. “Oh, hi Frank!” she beams.

>>
“Hiya merlin. Good book?” You indicate the rather thin looking book. Robotech? What's that all about?

“Oh, Y-yeah. It's ok. Where are we going?” She asks.

“Well, I was going to explore the house.” You say, shrugging. “You're more than welcome to come along.”

Merlin makes a face. “I did that with Ice earlier. I'll be in here reading.”

You laugh and nod, leaving the room's door open behind you.

Where do you want to go first?

[x] The Mess hall and kitchen. Most important thing here after my bed.

The two things that often go the most ignored in war are food and sleep. Sleep, especially. Food isn't as much a problem for you, but you've gone without sleep more than once in a tense situation- but you've almost always had time for a candy bar or something, even if you were trying to swallow one whole while scrambling into your jet.

Ah, memories, right?

The Mess hall is actually fairly nice- too large for just your little squadron, but clearly set up so that you can dine in a 'restaurant' style. Several small tables, designed to seat four people comfortably, are spread around the room, with a few larger tables for eight near the center. The chow line sets along the rear wall, and is like any chow line ever- several stainless steel tubs for heated water to keep food warm, and the kitchen behind it.

The kitchen itself is set up for large meals, prepared by cooks- not the smaller one like you had at Elmendorf. It could make the going difficult in the short run- the place just isn't made for small meals for seven people, it's made to feed three or four times that number easily. Still, it's nice and relatively modern- when this place fills up, it'll be well within it's ability to handle it.

You're not sure when the cooks themselves are going to show up- most of the incoming personnel have been either combat troops or pilots and their support crew, but the build up around here is such that the support and rear area staff will be around sooner, rather than later.

Where to next?

[] Lounge! Recreation is the third most important thing!
[] The offices. Gotta get a feel for where all the maps are going to be.

[x] Lounge! Recreation is the third most important thing!

The upstairs lounge is your next stop. Just above the chow hall and kitchen, you've always thought that it should have been on the same floor as the bedrooms, but you're not going to complain. It's got a nice view of the airbase and the bay, where you can see ships at anchor- mostly freighters, but a pair of destroyers rest there as well, the escorts for the tiny convoy.

The lounge itself is stepped- on the 'upper' part, there's a number of bookshelves along the walls, several comfortable looking chairs and a pair of couches, a pair of tables with four chairs each, and a pool table, where Slider and Maverick are busily playing a game.

The 'lower' part of the lounge- separated by a pair of wide steps- has several couches arranged around a good sized TV. Hooked to the TV are a VHS deck and a NES, though you're not sure how many movies or games are available for them. Goose occupies one of the couches with Katya sprawled out over a nearby one, both watching that most Christmas of movies- Die hard. You're not sure who picked it, but both of them look to be fairly engrossed.

“Hello Frank!” Katya smiles as she greets you. “Do you wish to watch the movie with us? Plenty of room here!” She pats the couch next herself and grins.

“Hey, wait! Nuh-uh! We were looking for him to Play some pool!” Maverick protests.

[x] Eh, not up for a pool game. Watch the movie.

“Not gonna lie, Mav. I'm really not 'feelin pool right now. Later?” You say, heading towards the couch.

“You're no fun.” She pouts, then brightens up a bit. “Well, except for that one time when we-”

You cut her off. “Young ears! Young ears! God, I hope you're not telling Goose stories!”

She laughs. “Nah. Well, except that one...” She laughs again.

For her part, Goose just looks confused.

You sit down on the end of the couch, and Katya immediately stretches her legs across your lap, smiling.

You're pretty sure the movie isn't 100% realistic- but it's a good waste of time. Katya clearly enjoys it, though she does ask why SWAT doesn't have witches. After all, one witch would have shut down the ATGM attack on their armored car, right?

You just shrug. “Because it's Hollywood. Better movie if a witch doesn't just show up and wreck the bad guys' day.”

She still looks confused, and you laugh a little. “First time with a western movie?” You ask, reading her expression. She nods.

“At Vladivostok, we had some recreational buildings, but not many. I spent most of my time at the pool- it became very popular with us. In Afghanistan, we didn't have any recreation, really. Mostly what we'd brought with us.” She says, then indicates the Movie. “Nothing like this. Soviet movies are vehicles for propaganda, for the most part. Some of them are good. We will have to watch Alexander Nevsky sometime, you will see what I mean.”

Ice's voice interrupts right before the end of the movie.

[x] Talk? Whatever it was, I didn't do it.

“Whatever it was, ma'am, I didn't do it.” You say, turning yourself to look at her.

“Not yet, anyway.” Nixon says as he climbs the stairs and looks around. “Nice place. The Seabees really outdid themselves this time.”

He snickers some. “Don't anybody get up or anything. Take it easy. Bishop, can you join us for a minute? We'd like to talk with you.”

Katya moves her legs with a small yelp as you jump off the couch, causing Nixon and Ice to both grin.

They lead you into your squadron’s briefing room- just off the lounge, it's very modern, with a large projector screen replacing the blackboard you're used to, and twenty chairs arranged in five rows- again, overkill for your squadron by far, but enough that a conventional unit could use it.

“Got a few things to discuss with you two.” He hands you an envelope, adorned with the seal of the president of the United States of America. “First, that's your invitation to the white house Christmas ball. I understand if you don't want to go, but there's a lot of people that really want to meet you, son.”

That takes you aback. The white house Christmas ball? Your folks have gone, once or twice- dad's Medal of Honor gets them invites every year.

It wasn't engines this time but I know a lot of threads and quests to do with space combat get this problem a lot. Something to do with "ships" and "engines" in combination with other words or used in a certain way trips the filter.

>>
>>22256169
I agree with Katya. I don't think we've publicly rubbed it into the face of the Soviets that one of their top witches defected. White House Ball is perfect!

"Well, I guess that sounds like fun," you say, trying to hide your reluctance. "But with all due respect to the President, sir, we were sent here to prep for a strike on a critical target. What if the ball causes us to miss our window?"

"Not that I'm refusing to go, sir - if the President calls for me, I'm going. I'm just worried on the effects this might have.

You don't turn down an invite from the President of the United States, but at the same time, there's a war that you've got to fight - and going to a fancy Christmas party while everyone else is fighting leaves a guilty feeling at the back of your soul.

>>
Derp - forgot to note this: if we're taking anyone with us, it's a tossup between Ice and Merlin. On one hand, Merlin is our RIO/little sister/partner, and pilots never go without their RIO - they are a team.

On the other hand, Ice is the CO.

The solution, therefore, is to bring them both: Ice as CO and Merlin as RIO.

...this does, I admit, leave Slider and Maverick in charge back at Adak, which means we may not have an airbase left standing by the time we get back.
>>

[x] Sounds like fun, sir. When do I leave?

“Sounds like fun, sir.” you say honestly. “When do I leave?”

Nixon grins. “Can't say I expected that response, son.” He says. “I figured I'd have to make it an order. You'll be leaving in a few hours- pack an overnight bag, that's it. Your folks have already been contacted, they'll have a set of tailored blues there for you. Your RIO's already been taken care of as well. So has..” He trails off.

“Oh, hell. I almost forgot. Commander, here's your invitation.” He hands an identical envelope to Ice. And shrugs.

“Sir, I-” She starts, trying to hand it back, but Nixon cuts her off.

“I know what you're going to say, commander, and I know. It wasn't my idea, and it's not my choice. The president wants to meet the navy's top scoring aces- and he wants to talk with both of you.” He looks at you. “He'd also like to see your bird for himself. At least it means you won't have to sit in a gulfstream for the trip. Your ground crew is already loading it up.”

“Got it, sir.” you say, both happy you won't have to endure the slow, boring transit in a gulfstream- then unhappy when you realize you're going to have to endure it in your jet, while you fly near a gulfstream.

“ONI has cleared Miss Katya, if you want to bring her.” Nixon says. “But the president really doesn't care. His only suggestion was to not leave the squadron without any kind of commander, in case the Soviets try something. We don't think they will, but....” he shrugs.

“But you never know. Got it sir.” You say.

[] So, who do you want to bring? (write-in. And how you ask, too. Don't just tell me “BRING KATYA.”)

[x] Katya by 2 votes.

“Is that it for us, sir?” You ask, anxious to get on with it. Nixon nods.

“That's it, son. Once you get your guest sorted out, Head down to the flight line. You'll be flying to andrews via Elmendorf, McChord, and an Air national guard base in the middle of Iowa.” He shrugs at the last one. “Those are just fuel stops. We’d use in flight assets, but we don't have any in the lower forty eight right now.”

“Got it. The flight plan is on my bird's computer, I'm going to guess.” You say, nodding.

Nixon nods. “Your ground crew uploaded it when I landed. Now go ask whichever one of your lovely squadron mates you want to bring along, and head down to the flight line.”

“Aye, sir.” You say, shaking his offered hand. “I'll see you there.”

You step out of the office and back into the lounge- where Katya's moved to one of the tables, and is teaching Merlin chess.

You walk over, returning Merlin's smile. “Uh, hey Katya.”

She looks up at you. “Yes?”
>>
“So, a while back, I promised you a date. And, well... Miss Litvyak, would you do me the great honor of accompanying me to the Presidential Christmas ball?” You ask, trying to sound gallant. Slider, somewhere near the pool table, ruins the effect by whooping and Maverick begins to clap.

Katya's blush is nearly infrared. “I-I... I would be honored.” She stammers. “Should I go pack?”

You nod. “We leave in a few hours. It's just a day or two. Do you have a dress uniform?” You're glad to the shift back to business. You were gonna start getting all bashful if she kept up like that.

“No, but I believe I have something suitable.” She says, standing up. “And I am not in a military anymore, I think. If I am, no one has told me I am!”

She's heading down the stairs before you can respond.

x] Well, that's that then. C'mon Merlin, let's grab our shit and go preflight the jet.

“Well, that sorts that then. C'mon Merlin, let's go get our bags and get the bird set up.” You say, looking at the chess board. You're not very good at it yourself, having preferred simpler board games, but it looks like Merlin was giving Katya a run for her money.

Downstairs, you grab an overnight bag- hygiene kit, a spare flight suit, and some other personal odds and ends- and Merlin grabs hers, cramming it full of books. Looks like more of that series she'd been reading earlier.

You also think to grab that book that Georgette wanted you to give Katya. You were asked to hold onto the one's you'd gotten the girls- but this one doesn't count, to your mind. Plus, she'll want something to do on the long flight, right?

Katya meets you in the building's front room- her own bag packed, and a garment bag slung over one shoulder.

“Ice went ahead.” She says, falling in step with you and Merlin on the walk down to your hangar. “Comrade Nixon went earlier.”

You walk down to the squadron hangar quietly, listening to the sounds of the base. The Seabees are still around, working on the base and putting the last buildings up, as well as being active up in the interior of the island, fortifying it more thoroughly. The place is really rapidly turning into a fortress.
>>
Inside the hangar, Nixon's tomcat sits next to your wyvern, giving you a pang of grief at the thought of your own lost bird. The wyvern may be ten times as effective a combat jet, but there's just something about the cat you loved. A C-20 occupies the rest of your side of the hangar, it's doors open.

“Oh, here Katya.” You hand her the gift-wrapped book. “Georgette, the witch that healed me, she wanted you to have this.”

“I thought we weren't supposed to exchange presents yet!” She exclaims. “I would have given you yours if-” You stop her protests with an hand.

“Katya, that's not from me, it's from the witch that put me back together.” You say smiling. “I just thought to give it to you now, since I won't be able to at Christmas, and you'll want something to read on the flight.”

“I... thank you, Frank.” She says.

You shrug. “You're welcome. Maybe you can thank her in person- she might be there. Her husband won a MoH years ago.”

Katya smiles. “If we see her, I will.”

“See you in DC, then.” You say, suddenly unsure of what to tell her. She smiles and nods, and boards the waiting C-20.

Nixon cuts off any further conversation when he starts up one of his turbines- clearly announcing time to go.

[x] Haste makes waste. I can catch up in flight- they can't supercruise.

Nixon's already rolling, forcing you to wait while he clears the hangar. Why he couldn't wait for an aircraft tug will be a mystery for all time, you figure. The C-20 pilot is far more sensible, waiting for the powerful little tug to tow him out to the apron before running up his own jets.

Meanwhile, you have a pre-flight walk around. Externally, you're loaded with a pair of fuel tanks, while your two nacelle bays house a pair of agiles each. Your centerline bay carries a large fuel tank as well, which, when combined with the external tanks, gives you the legs to reach Elmendorf with plenty of flight time to spare- you could go straight to McChord, almost, though you'd be on fumes by the time you got there.

Your bird is almost already completely ready to go- the only thing Merlin hasn't already done is fire up the jets, and that's only because she can't, without crawling into the front office. You, too, wait for an aircraft tug to pull you out of the hangar- last thing you need to do is ingest some foreign object and ruin one of your new, and very expensive turbine fans. Nixon's already airborne as the C-20 takes off and you taxi onto the runway. Behind you, Merlin waves at the house as you take off, then opens up one of her books. You expect she'll want to buy new by the time you land.

1/2
>>
The flight to Elmendorf is quiet- the whole front has calmed down and moved further west, with the soviets now bottled up on the Seward peninsula. Rumor says after your hit on Shemya, they've withdrawn the flying carrier and most of the bomber fleet in the Aleutian islands, and that the war up here is almost over. You're not so sure, but it is nice to think you won't have to have one eye glued to a sensor screen for fear of getting attacked. The remainder of the soviet air force in the theater is mostly -21s and -23s, with many of those tied up providing cover to the battered divisions on the line.

Landing there, you see that your wrecked quonset hut is gone, and your old hangar now occupied by a unit of phantoms- a sign of a reserve or guard squadron.

[x] Find Colonel Mcleod, give her her damn mug

The ground crew looks at you as you pop your canopy and dig in the personal storage beneath the cockpit floor for your bag, pulling out a wrapped box.

“Where ya going?” Merlin asks over the intercom as you hit the ladder release and crawl out of the fighter.

You grin up at her. “I got a present for the colonel. Gonna go find her and give it to her. Stay with the bird, I'll be back in a couple, k?”

Merlin looks torn. “I... yeah, ok. Hurry back, ok?”

It only takes a minute to find the colonel- she's up in her old office, buried in some paperwork. She answers the knock on her door with a tired “Yeah?”

You pop in. “Hiya Colonel! Here's your Christmas present! Can't stay and chat, gotta fly. Stay safe, have fun!”

The look of utter astonishment on her face is priceless.

You get out of the squadron offices before she manages to recover enough to say anything. You figure you'll be at McChord by the time she gets mad.

Nixon, again, beats you into the air, and the C-20's taking off as you climb back into your fighter. “Did she like it?” Merlin asks as soon as you're plugged back into the intercom.

You laugh.

[x] Other! (she loved it. Now let's leave before we find out just how much she loved it!)

“She loved it Merlin.” you say, warily looking around the flight line as you taxi to the runway. “But let's get out of here before she show exactly how much she loved getting it.”

“So she didn't love it.” Merlin says flatly.

“I dunno. She didn't react in time, and I don't want to stick around and find out.” You say. Merlin laughs.

You will your fighter to takeoff faster as you start your roll, as if somehow your thoughts could induce physics to modify themselves just this one time. It doesn't work, but you think it was probably worth the effort anyway.

Your next stopover is just as fun- wintertime McChord is socked in by rain and a low cloud deck, and landing on the slick runway is no fun, though at least there's no wind. The Boone air national guard base, in Iowa, is less fun, with a winter storm howling outside and thirty knot winds buffeting your jet below the cloud deck. Thankfully, the runway is long and dry, and the crew onsite is able to refuel your jet in a hurry, clearly wanting to be out of the cold themselves.

Your last stop is Andrews Airforce base. Home of air force one, it's also playing host to several other nation's dignitaries' aircraft, and you can clearly see a few witches flitting about in the nighttime sky.

1/2
>>
Upon landing, you're directed to a small, well-guarded hangar, where Nixon's tomcat is already parked. The C-20, just behind you, heads off to join a gaggle of similar aircraft on the pad, leaving you and Merlin to shakily deplane alone.

“Been sitting too long.” You grouse, stretching. Merlin nods.

Nixon, for his part, doesn't appear to show any discomfort at all, instead inspecting his aircraft post-flight. His RIO is nowhere to be seen.

He looks over at you. “There should be a staff car here soon to take you to the Hotel. You probably won't have any time to yourself in town, I'm sorry son. Oh, and you and Commander Kazinski need to be here tomorrow morning at 06, that's when your new people are scheduled to be here. There's a ferry crew bringing in their bird already, that should be here later tonight.”

Outside, a navy staff car pulls to a halt. Nixion indicates it. “There's your ride, son. Most of the places were pretty full up, and we had to hide you, so there's only a pair of rooms. I don't think I need to tell you to keep it in your pants tonight, but....” He trails off with a grin.

[x] Hasn't been an issue before sir, no problem.

You exaggerate your shrug. “It's never been a problem before, sir.” You say. “It won't be one tonight.”

Nixon nods. “Good answer, son. I don't mind if you do all kind of crazy crap at the front, but back here the press would have a field day with that kind of thing. I'm sure the tabloids will anyway.” He grimaces.

“Anyway, we're all tired. Go ahead to the hotel, you two. I'll see you both tomorrow.” He orders, pointing at the staff car.

“Aye, sir.” you say, snapping off a salute that Nixon waves off.

“Hell, son.” He chuckles. “I'd like to think in private, you don't need to do that shit with me. Save it for the public.”

The ride to the hotel is longer than you'd have liked, but still too short to get any sleep in. The hotel itself is nice, and, thankfully, your room has a pair of beds, instead of a single king sized one. Katya and Ice, by mutual agreement, claim the other room, while Merlin rapidly claims the bed closest to the door in your room, dropping her bag on it and pulling off her own flight boots.

“Dibs on the shower!” She yells, grabbing her bag and ducking around the corner to the bathroom door before you can protest. You grin when you hear the door slam shut.

There's a knock at the door. Along with some faint, but unmistakable giggling and shushing.
