Previously, you succeeded in hunting down your brother's killers and subduing them. Goltyrsyx staged a raid on the neigbouring Imgodidartak's lair, stealing a portion of his hoard. Imgodidartak then launched an attack on Goltyrsyx, managing to trap her in a wing bind, before going after you. You successfully evaded him until Goltyrsyx found a way to slow her descent. He went after her to investigate and you were able to cripple him by diving onto his wing at high speed. Goltyrsyx then killed him.

http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/22167163/#p22173052
>Get the rest of the elves. Try and impress them and our current ones with Imgodidartak's severed head. 8
Goltyrsyx refuses to let you borrow his head (she's having his skull mounted over the entrance to her hoard). While she has claimed the green's former lands and all who are in them, it doesn't stop a number of the elves sneaking out. Your agents had previously been extremely cautious about recruiting in Imgodidartak's territory. They only met with those they were nearly certain would defect. The death of Imgodidartak, combined with our mother's injuries from the fight slowing her down, allowed your agents to evacuate a portion of the elves. In total, eighty three elves have joined your existing ones, bringing their numbers up to one hundred and forty three. The confusion surrounding Imgodidartak's death and the delay following Goltyrsyx making her rule of the area known should make it appear that the missing elves simply fled. If she does know about your theft, she's said nothing.
>>
>Encourage your cult among the elves. 15
Unfortunately, the death of Imgodidartak has done little to encourage the few elves who seem to worship you. You were careful to portray you involvement as the primary focus of the battle. From your description of the battle, it seemed he was already half dead by the time Goltyrsyx got hold of him. However, most of the elves realize who was actually responsible for his death. Your nascent cult remains fairly stable, though it has lost some of its direction with the 'poisonous hate's' death. Much of their fanaticism came from the fact that you were seem as their sole protector from Imgodidartak. With him gone they have lost some of their focus. You have been encouraging their sense of elitism and their extensive time spent working with your kobolds has helped to maintain their worship of you. Right now, they are focused on watching the other elves for signs of disloyalty and raising the village's children between themselves to ensure they are raised to worship you. It will take decades for the effects of this to be felt.

>Continue trying to subvert your sister. 1
While friends would probably be too strong a term, you have settled into a semi-alliance with your sister. You frequently tip each other off about potentially interesting sources of wealth and often cooperate on difficult raids. She seems to have accepted that you are better at the planning side of things than her, not that she'd admit it out loud. While you do need to appeal to her self interest, she does follow your advice more often than not.
>>
>More magic and combat practice. 18
While you now know all of the basics, your studies in magic have slowed. There are radical and unanticipated differences between the way prepared and unprepared spells come together. You've since gotten past the major stumbling blocks, but you progress was slow - you're still on first circle spells. This and managing your growing cult and village has eaten into your time for physical practice. The only opponent in your league that you have to practice against is your sister. She is quite adept at physical combat and has fought you to a standstill on more than one occasion. So far, you've managed to use your superior magic skills to prevent a loss, but that probably won't be the case once her spell resistance kicks in. You still win slightly more often than you draw, however.

http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/22167163/#p22173543
>Can we try again to find allies among humans ? 1
You have managed to press-gang several farmsteads into working for you. What began as an alliance of terror has since turned into a profitable business relationship. The farmers are able to get information concerning high value goods and where they are being transported, which you are then able to hit. In exchange they get a few insignificant trinkets or a recently killed animal to eat. The cost to you is negligible, especially when compared to the profits. Using them as catspaws, you've managed to gain contacts in one of the local militas. They don't know you're a dragon yet, but they know that you can make certain problem bandits 'disappear'.
>>
Your elven slaves have been slowly breeding. Many of the new recruits were children and are being raised primarily by your cult. The kobolds have expanded significantly. The wizard Thorom has finally mastered first circle spells and has begun working on the second circle ones. He has been making subtle inquiries about going to Temur to study properly.

Your assets: 1 elven village, with 124 adult elves and 19 children. You have roughly 11 members in your informal cult. 1 mostly trained wizard. 129 kobolds and 1 underground lair.

You are a (newly) juvenile red dragon. What do you do?
>>
>>22267820

What skills do the elves and kobolds have currently? Any new ones we need to know about?
>>
What was that Amulet we got last thread? The one we got as a result of a crit success? Also, I think we need something to give our power a boost. Maybe we let our mostly trained wizard go to Temure in return for getting us an apprenticeship with a competent wizard in Temure?
>>
>>22267820
On the wizard issue:
Ask how the elves are doing and if he's fulfilled his duties there then let him go. Also give him a little (very little) bit of of our horde as seed money/payment. Keep in contact with him.
>>
Most of them just have the basic skills needed for subsistence living. Some of the new elves are reasonably capable hunters and would probably make good scouts. Four others have been studying magic and all but one of those are able to cast first circle spells with a reasonable degree of proficiency. The kobolds only significant skills is trapmaking (their small fortress has been described by the elves as a deathtrap).
>>
>>22267820

Start training more elves to fight, either as duskblades, rangers and barbarians. Get some others to train as clerics of Io, worshipping him as the creator of us.
Find some instructors for them.

We should start preparing to move them. We'll need ships. Maybe airships.

What became of the rest of the elves ? Can we negociate with mom to take control of them ?
>>
>>22267928
That's too generous. Letting him go free is already a significant payment.

But don't let him go until we find a replacement.
>>
>>22267952
Dear mom is presumably going to tell us know. As for moving out, I would prefer to wait until the young adult stage. That's when we really come into our own in power and ability.
>>
>>22267966
I think the "Acquire us a competent teacher. Is a good compromise. It will give us the power boost we need.
>>
The amulet can make you invisible for a few minutes. You usually wear it. You still haven't decided on a lair location, though you've been much further afield in the last ten years.

You already have a few elves who have knowledge comparable to Thorom and you have copies of his former master's notes.
>>
>>22267973
>As for moving out, I would prefer to wait until the young adult stage.
I would too, but I think we should be ready to do it earlier without losing much. Shit can happen.

We should actually prepare a good number of contigency plans to face every obvious risk.
>>
Rolled 3

>>22267986
Agreed we need to find a suitable tutor for our growing wizards. Lets send one of our envoys out to Temur and offer to hire their top 3 most competent teachers.
>>
>>22268010
I that island is probably the best choice. In the meantime, yeah, lets use Thorom to acquire a more capable teacher.
>>
>>22268010
>You already have a few elves who have knowledge comparable to Thorom and you have copies of his former master's notes.
Then I support letting him go, with an agreement to keep information about us to himself, and to send us back the information we request from him about humans.
First, I want him to send us all documents he can find about practical ways to move hundreds of elves from one point to another without a road. Airships blueprints would be ideal.
>>
Glad to see you back

We should start looking a lair, mother will kick us out soon. I know so far none of the places have seemed palatable but perhaps we have found someplace new?
>>
>>22268022
While that is an excellent roll, I doubt we have the money to hire the three best teachers. Lets just settle for "most competent we can find."
>>
>>22268057
We could just built a ship. Or do what we did with Kolbolds, but make multiple trips.
>>
>>22267944
we should let him go, but keep him as a contact, perhaps there is something non-important we could send him away with to keep his loyalty;

Tell me? in his time in our service has he gotten an elven sweetheart?
>>
>>22268074
Honestly whatever we can afford without costing over 1/5th of our total hoard.

Also I think we need to Scout around for new lair locations.
>>
>>22268057
Ah, get him into relation with our human contacts. They can probably help him getting settled and will make the agreement sweeter for him.

Try to exfiltrate him most discreetly. I don't want mom to know we set one of her humans relatively free.
>>
Getting a teacher would be quite difficult. People generally don't trust red dragons. It's also likely to be expensive, to offset the risk they would be taking.
>>
>>22268088
>>22268057

Have you guys ever heard of loose ends? I don't like them. Not one bit.

Also he is a useful slave, why let go of a commodity?
>>
>>22268112
True, on the other hand, its hard to argue with that roll. 3 on a d20 in a roll low system makes a persuasive case.
>>
>>22268114
who said anything about letting him go? just moving him somewhere else. He seems a bit dull and should be fairly easy to coerce into a number of things
>>
>>22268082
Multiple trips is unpractical. And building ships isn't as easy as it sounds. We need a shipwright.

We can ask thorom or someone to send one to us, along with a young cleric of Io.
>>
>>22268112
Hmm, what of buying magic tomes on the higher circles? That should be relatively cheaper no?

Also will not my roll of 3 make for a good case?
>>
>>22268114
I think he could be more useful in the capital. But I won't insist too much, it does seem premature and risky.
>>
I think the best direction now is to scout possible locations of a lair
>>
>>22268114
I'll stand by my original idea of use him to acquire a competent teacher. He's not actually that good of a prize. Not worth the resentment keeping him would cause.
>>
>>22268112
>Getting a teacher would be quite difficult.
Maybe we can capture one.

If we can find one. Our human agents could be useful for that, but we'd need to strengthen their bonds first.
>>
So it's let Thorom go to Temur and have him try and hire a teacher?
>>
>>22268196
Yep, Usinng that really nice roll ofc.

I want to take out that silver dragon and take his lair. I think he's got the best location for us on this map, strategically speaking. He's alone, there's mountains for us, human ports nearby, lizardfolks, and the plain where we can build an empire.
It might have to wait until we're young adults, and we'll need the help of our sister, and probably the support of some humanoids we sent there ahead of us (for example, by settling some elves in the forest between the black dragons).

What do you guys think ?
>>
>>22268263
Also how many adventurers have been coming through lately, we don't need them tipping our apple cart
>>
>>22268196
Also a cleric of Io, if he can find one. We'll need some divine magic on our side.

What is mom doing with the rest of Imgo's slaves ?
>>
>>22268298
only if we get better information, last thing we need is two black dragons on our ass
>>
I'd like to know just how the elves reacted to imgos death? the more we know about what they are doing and think the better we can control them
>>
>>22268298
I'd prefer to curb-stomp the bronze near 2. That way, we won't be sandwiched between two more powerful blacks.
>>
>>22268196
Send him to our human allies first, so they can keep an eye on him in the city.

Keep a few of his personal effects. It might be useful as focus for spells later. Of course, keep his books.
>>
>>22268347
Or we could have simply made copies any time in the past decade or so.
>>
>>22268341
If the blacks didn't take out the lawful good silver, we can hope that they won't attack us until we gave them a reason to. One of them is especially low-profile and will probably not reveal himself against us.
>>
Just send him to Wizardschool, let him know we'll pay his way if he can't find a real apprenticeship.

Obviously we'll collect on this debt when he's a WIZZARD but right now he's a shitty apprentice and we have elves who're roughly as advanced as he is.
>>
>>22268361
Oh yeah, we could.
>>
>>22268376
I like this line of thinking
>>
>>22268341
Also, bronze is somewhat more problematic in that he can (and probably does) live underwater. And water and red dragons don't go hand-in-hand.
>>
>>22268403
and nearby gold dragons might intervene.
>>
>>22268417
>Implying we couldn't lure him out.
Also, the Golds are quite far away.
>>22268371
Limits our ability to conquer things. Although Frankly, non of the current options have the sort of power vacuum I would like. The sheer number of dragons hanging around that can murder us is very inhibiting. Especially since they will gain power roughly as fast as we do.
>>
>>22268403
If we have a zeppelin, we can use it to drop depth charges on him.
>>
>>22268477
I suppose then our best strength is that of the devils, to convince the world he does not exist

>Limits our ability to conquer things.
True enough, though it gives us things to conquer.
The golds can intervene after the fight. They've got some kind of sense of justice, and particular distaste for red dragons that the blacks do not have. They could even help one another. The distance isn't that important, a young gold dragon can fly 240 miles a day.

>they will gain power roughly as fast as we do.
It takes longer to grow from young adult to adult than from juvenile to young adult. And maybe they're not as enterprising or successful as we are.
>You still haven't decided on a lair location, though you've been much further afield in the last ten years.
Did we get information about dragon density outside of this area ?

I want to tell you that I like your maps, OP. I'm a bit picky regarding maps, but yours satisfy me.
>>
>>22268631
Unless OP lets us gain power much faster than the average dragon we will be firmly stuck with a case of "can't catch up", which would horribly suck. Fortunatly, according to the book OP uses as a source, most dragons never bother to train. So eventually we should be able to pull away from the pack.
>>
>>22268619
They're vulnerable to fire, though. A second breath weapon from our sister is a bigger advantage than his spells.
Of course, if we ever want to attack him, we'll have to find ourself a few items to protect us from the cold.

>>
>>22268692

Relax, we've already seen that other dragons plot against each other, we should just work on our power base and see if we can't get some friends in the ~BIG CITY~ (beyond the wizardling).

With that we'll know whats going down and who we can plot against.
>>
>>22268601
Hey are those red dots in the mountain range between the desert and the plains Volcanoes? If so I want to check them out in more depth as they don't seem too dragon dense.
>>
>>22268769

Oh heeey, that's right! For once, the shitty sorcerer-bias from 3.5 actually works in our favor.

Probably his main advantage over us is out-of-battle, then (alternate form), so it'll be a question of allies gathered if we're to attack him.

Sister will be very important for this, perhaps we shouldn't let her in on that fact if we try it...

The red dots are regions of volcanic activity you saw during your brief tour of the continent.

You approach Thorom early one evening after reviewing your trainee spellcasters latest attempts. The wizard is going over one of Olmir's tomes on transmutation. He hears you approach and stands, facing you.

"Ah, good evening, great one." He still utters the title as if it were a name rather than a sign of veneration. "I trust the apprentices are performing satisfactorily." Again, a none too subtle reminder of your original arrangement.

"They are, as they have been for the past few months." He looks slightly satisfied at this. Before he can speak you tell him of your plans for him. "You needn't try and hide your request behind subtle hints, Thorom. I said I would take you to Temur once my chosen slaves were properly trained and you have done so. So, to Temur you will go."

He looks slightly surprised by this. "You- thank you, great one. I-"

"At a convenient time in the near future, I will take you there. While you are in Temur, there is one thing I would like you to see to." You continue. 'Convenient' meaning when it suits you, rather than when he's ready, of course.

He pauses at this, giving you a guarded look. "I see. What is it, precisely, that you want me to do?"

"While Olmir's notes are adequate for future study, progress would be greatly expedited by a more experienced tutor. I want you to find and hire one. I will, of course, provide the funds."

He looks slightly relieved that your request isn't something insidious. "Oh, well, I'll see what I can do then. I've heard most of the masters rarely venture far from their labs, but I suppose a large amount of gold might draw one of them out."

You nod at this - it's less intimidating than a grin. "Excellent. Don't exceed five thousand gold pieces. I may give you a fraction of the savings if you can get it significantly under that."

He blinks in surprise at the suggestion you might willing give him anything. "Oh, well, thank you."
>>
A few days later you drop him off with a few of your local agents. They will escort him to what passes for lawful lands while you watch from the air. It doesn't take long for word to get back to you. Thorom has found a place at the academy - the descent sized portion of gold you have given him helped with this. He has spread your offer around, though left out the precise details (such as you being a dragon). Two potentially interested scholars emerged. One refused after learning of your nature, the other is a man named Garran, a third circle caster. Through your intermediaries, you set up a meeting several kilometres west of the city.

You land behind the hill opposite the road nearly an hour before the due time. It might mean waiting, but you want to see what preparations the wizard might try taking in the area. You make no attempt to hide your presence, other than from the road.

At precisely time agreed, a figure emerges from behind the hill. He's wearing the blue and white robes ubiquitous to the academy, though his are decorated with various trinkets of which you can identify only a few.

"Greetings red one!" he shouts cheerfully. "I am Garran, I hear you are eager to learn of our magic." He seems remarkably unfazed for someone who's face to face with a ledgendary breed of killer.

"You are correct. I understand your are willing to work for only one thousand gold pieces."

"One thousand pieces per year, my friend. Per year." He oviously wouldn't forget something like that, but you understand it's the sort of thing that's done in negotiation.

"Per year then," you verbally note. There's something very slightly wrong about the way he moves.
>>
"And I will require time to have my lab moved," he continues.

"Of course." There's definitely something wrong about him. The way he walk is too...weightless. You peer at him briefly as he steps forwards. No footprints. An illusion then. "So when do you intend to actually show yourself."

He grins at this, then disappears. You catch sight of movement out of the corner of your eye and almost ready a burst of fire, suspecting betrayal, but only Garran is standing on top of the hill, grinning slightly.

"Apologies, friend, but I need to confirm you were at least not going to attack me, or try and carry me off." Well at least he's not entirely stupid.

"And how do you know I'm not playing a longer game." You can't help but utter the retort. The impression of having been fooled is too irritating.

"How do you know that was my only contingency," he says with another grin.

In the end, you agree to hire him for a thousand gold pieces per year, for five years. It's expensive, but he's competent in third circle spells, enchantment, wandcraft and potionmaking. He also wants to study your natural magic. It's not often a wizard gets to interact with a dragon on friendly terms and he would like to see how your spellcasting functions. He'll share any findings with you, of course.

Expand contact among humans.
Get sister fully under thumb
Advance Magical and Physical abilities

You averaged around 1,500gp per year over the last 10 years (though you gained more in the last few than the first few). You hoard is currently worth around 25,000gp, though only 8,000gp in in coins. Most of it is hidden with your kobolds.

Here's a new map, since I just noticed the scale on the other one doesn't quite match.
>>
>>22269260
You forgot to add master magic. Also I would vote for checking out those volcanos more than taking the island.
>>
>>22269056
Nice.

Now I want a duskblade, preferably a human one, so that we can kidnap him and have him teach our elves. Have Thorom look into it. He might find one among mercenary groups, or among human settlements close to (and at peace with) elven ones. Maybe our mercenary friends can find one for us with less difficulty, now that I think about it.

Also, I want Thorom to buy us all the books he can find on draconic religion, and more generically on clerical activity. We might be able to get our elven cultists to learn divine magic on their own - a cleric of Io willing to support us might be hard to find.
If he can find druids worshipping fire, though, that could be great.
>>
>>22269308

I want to settle those we control close to the sea and have them start building ships and sailing around.
If we can get the rest to help, that'd be great.

But we must devise a way to control them. Our cult is small, and we can't watch over them all the time like imgo did. Magic control is still out of our reach... Anyone has a good idea to make sure our elves do not try escaping as soon as they get ships ?

Terrible idea, better if we sent Elves to become apprentices to mages to learn stuff, but we just hired a dude to do just that.

Maybe if we established some traders/mercenaries of our own we could have our own adventurers learning things, but the problem there is they'd be our cultists.

The rest of the elves are currently working to help the local humans settle the forest. Goltyrsyx has decided the elves don't breed fast enough to colonise the forest properly, so they're acting as guides to the humans she's told the local city to send in.

As for using the ships to escape, you have fire, they have sails, rigging, wood and pitch.

Generally, I think we do it by being reasonable overlords. I mean, we are taxing them lightly and providing significant protection in exchange.
More detail:
In the getting our sis in over her head, all we have to do is stress the dangers of a job in such a fashion as to get her pride interfering with her brain. She goes off to prove us wrong, we bail her out when she inevitably gets in over her head.

>>22269536
>Plot to get Sis in over her head, (preferably by ignoring our advice) then bail her out.
Right. Find out about a big, well-defended caravan (or something else containing riches) trough our humans. Chat about it with her, mention thinking about attacking it on our own but being unsure because of the danger. Try to get her to claim that she could do it. Laugh a little, " yeah right", etc, push her to actually do it by advising against it for her safety.
Then watch her risk her life and save her.

...
Now that I type that down it seems like too much risk for too small a reward.

We'll need to prepare the terrain very well to make something like this go without a hitch. We need a target that we can be sure she can't take down alone (maybe we can ensure that by letting us be seen a little earlier, so they have time to prepare), but that won't kill her before (or after) we intervene.

Should we take the time to establish our sorcer spell list ? We get 3 lvl1 spells and 5 lvl0.
I'm thinking mage armor, true strike and grease.
By the way, how would grease interact with our breath weapon ?

Regardless of that, tell thorom to send us back copies of new spells he discovers, especially those useful to dragons (buffs and environmental effects.
>>
>>22269955
I would suggest we also get feather fall (learned from mom) and cure light wounds (we can draw from a cleric's list too), also how about web instead of grease?

And related to the new spells tell him we will even subsidize part of the cost of gaining new spells if he sends them back for us to also learn.

Burn a road through the green woods. Take a quicken or maximize breath feat for the occasion.
Settle our elves at the western end of it, along with some of our mom's humans, maybe like pic, or at the tip of the western bend. The town should be neatly separated. Have our elves start to learn carpentry and shipbuilding there. Some human carpenter should help. Start with small fishing ships.
Only elves have the right to get on the ships.

Thorom should send us books about sailing and shipbuilding.
>>
You won't be tied that closely to the rules. You can learn more than the usual number of sorcerer spells as you go, it just takes time. I don't intend to write an actual spell list as that will just complicate things.

I think we should scout out a lair around location 1 and prepare it for a time when we need to escape to a place away from other dragons.
We shoulld carry a dozen kobolds there to tend to it.
>>
>>22270937
Why bother setting up a war? Wars happen naturally plenty of the time. No, no. We wait for one to start brewing, and then plan a profitable venture around that war. If we cause the war ourselves, we risk discovery, and therefore implication in us or our vassals, which means the war falls on us, too. That's bad for business and bad for us keeping our skin intact without serious effort.

We should strive to make profit whenever and wherever we can, with low risk and high reward, while expanding our sovereignty. To survive, we must be cleverer than our contemporaries in the reds and the other breeds, not merely stronger. We must justify our pride while keeping it in check.
>>
You don't have any features distinctive enough for a human to recognise you by sight, though other dragons could. Traits passed on to half dragons are only attributable to the breed responsible, rather than an individual.

Your sister has been surprisingly reasonable of late, but you still don't have anywhere near the level of control over her you'd like. In order to rectify this, you have several of your human agents pose as dealers in exotic alchemical components, letting the local heroes know they're in the market for dragon parts. Considering the amount of gold you are offering (and have no intention of paying), the offers quickly start coming in. After only two weeks you have a band of heroes who are willing to hunt down a reasonably small dragon. The band quickly set the trap and inform you agents so they can be there (timing is important in organ harvesting, as they've told the mercenaries).

It's common knowledge that many of the groups carrying large amounts of wealth are hit by dragon attacks. As a result, they make sure everyone knows that a rich merchant is moving to a nearby town to better oversee his holdings. The story is paper thin, but no-one expects a dragon to attempt an in depth investigation when an easy opportunity for large amounts of gold is right in front of them.

Your sister approaches you the day before the convoy is supposed to move. This saves you the trouble of thinking up a reason for informing her about it, as you're only going to shoot it down as a bad idea.
>>
"I've heard some interesting things about the southbridge road. They say a rich human will be moving his treasure down it tomorrow," she says, clearly expecting you to want to attack.

"I've heard the same. I suspect it's a trap. I wouldn't bother," you say without looking up from your notes on wizardry.

She blinks in surprise at this. "At trap? You really think that a bunch of humans would try and lure us into a straight fight? Don't be silly, it's obvious whichever one of them that's moving hasn't heard about our raids. It has been nearly a year since we hit that road," she says dismissively.

You fix her with a stare. "Humans talk to each other. A lot. Every time we raid someone, word spreads. They already make a point of lying about the route tax collectors will be taking, and most traders have started following suite. Do you really think that someone who depends on keeping track of what the traders are doing will be unaware of that? Yet he clearly feels the need to scream it from the rooftops." You make sure to sound ever so slightly condescending as you explain this. Your argument logical enough and could probably sway her, but you've gotten her pride involved.

Predictably, she bristles. "So what if it is a trap? There's still a large amount of gold involved, we should hit it anyway, just in case."

You don't need to pretend as you roll your eyes at this. "There's no 'if' about it. It is a trap. There is no gold, only a bunch of primates who think they can kill us. Considering they're literally betting their lives on it, they might actually be able to."

She snorts at this. "Fine, more for me then. She nods dismissively at the notes you were reading. "Enjoy your paper."
>>
Her attack on the convoy is predictable enough. One large, covered wagon with several troops in a column at the front and back and several smaller carts. Bandits are still a major problem this far out, so running convoys with a number of soldiers isn't unusual. She swoops in out of the sun, aiming to burn the front column of troops with her breath. From your vantage point on a nearby hill, it's immediately clear something is wrong. She shouldn't be visible yet, but you can see the chatter has died down and the group has started to tense.

The largest cart pops open, revealing a large ballista that is being rapidly cranked towards her. She immediately changes course to try and deal with the new threat. As she does, a web spell emerges from one of the other carts, clipping her left wing. The sticky strands adhere to her wings membranes, distorting them and slightly altering the airflow over them. This, combined with the strange sensation of the web affecting her aerial balance causes her to panic. She could have managed to control her glide had she remained calm, but she wastes her breath on burning the web. The ballista fires, the bolt lodges firmly in her tail and she screams in pain. She turns around for another pass, fury etched
on her face.

Shortly before she enters striking range, a wall of solid rock shoots out of the ground right in front of her. You recognise a silent image when you see one, but she doesn't and pulls up to avoid it. She realises her mistake as she passes over the wall - the air currents over it wouldn't feel right. She tries to salvage her run, but she's too far from the main group and her breath only burns the rear of one of the carts. The ballista is ready to fire again - to fast to be a normal one, it's likely enchanted. It's still turning for now.
>>
Two more web spells emerges from another cart, catching both her wings. Still recovering from her failed attack, she doesn't have the altitude to recover from her loss of balance and crashes. It's a well controlled crash, but she loses several vital seconds of mobility as she pulls the webbing off and the ballista fires again, hitting her in the left primary pectoral - the main muscle for beating the wing. She screams again. She manages to struggle into the air, heading straight for the ballista - abandoning the fight isn't an option for her, now that they've successfully wounded her.

As she approaches the ballista, mist begins to form around it. Undeterred she continues her attack. You can see where this is going and move to intervene. You use your invisibility amulet to keep the element of surprise. You can see the crew of the ballista jumping off the back, obscured from your sisters view by the mist. She lets her breath loose on it, skimming the top of the mist at speed. The wound to her chest means she isn't willing to gain more altitude than necessary. As she does so, a large bundle of hooked chains emerge from the mist just managing to catch her wings. The hooks dig in, the chains go taut and she convulses in mid air as her momentum starts to tear the membranes. She hits the ground again, hard. You're only seconds away now. Several of the humans jump out with with spikes and use them to try and nail her wings to the ground, relying on the pain from tearing the membranes further to keep her immobilized. She catches one group with her breath, but the other manage to get her wing down. The troops that had formed the initial columns are gathering around her. You can see a flicker of fear in her eyes now. You're almost there.
>>
You hit the largest group of soldiers with your breath, breaking your invisibility. The rest immediately scatter, caught by surprise by the appearance of a second dragon. You turn just enough to be able to slam into the ballista, wrecking it thoroughly. Letting your momentum carry you, you jump onto the cart behind it, crushing it and killing the small group of soldiers who had jumped behind it for cover. You turn around and charge at the troops who have rallied around what you presume to be the lead wizard. They form a spear wall and archers take aim. You keep your head faced down, so they can't hit your eyes. Several arrows bury themselves in the top of your head, but they only sting. You hit the spear wall with enough force to shatter most of them, but a few lodge in your flesh. Pausing to pull them out, the area is suddenly engulfed in flame as your sister's breath recovers. With them gone, nearly all of the troops are dead, most of the rest are fleeing. The lead wizard is a pile of ash and their only weapon capable of seriously harming you is completely destroyed.

With the humans routed you turn to your sister.

She glares at you. "Well. Help me." She says it as if you owe it to her, but the fact she asked at all is a big step.
>>
"You realise that you were about thirty seconds away from getting run through. Your hide isn't tough enough to handle that, not yet. You skull on the other hand-"

"Shut up," she snaps at you as you pull one of the spikes out of her wings.

You shrug in acquiescence. "I did point out this was going to happen. You know I've put a great deal of effort into making sure I know the trade routes."

She continues to glare. "I don't care about the trade routes. They caught me by surprise."

You sigh at this. "They caught you by surprise because you ignored me when I said this was a trap. There's a reason I spend so much time planning attacks. You need to plan for the possibility that any opportunity might turn out to be a trap."

She just sulks at this.

You continue. "We should play to our strengths. You are a capable fighter. You almost had them, and would have done if they didn't have the element of surprise. Leave the planning sessions to me. You pretty much do anyway."

She looks at you for a second. "Just as long as we still split the loot evenly."

She seems wiling, somewhat, to accept your defacto rule. For now.

Excellent. Unfortunately, we have taught her a valuable lesson in planning and restraint, which means she might try to equal us in cleverness. And she'll fail, more than likely, but we might have taught her too much of a lesson.

==========

Over the last few weeks, your agents have been trying to recruit a few reasonably skilled fighters to train your elves. So far, potential leads have been few and far between. Most turn out to be too inept, the rest demand too much money. You can't help but wonder if you should give in and pay the price that was demanded by the supposedly skilled fighters. As much as you loathe parting with money, the skills it would impart to your slaves are far too useful to be ignored, even if they are overpriced.

The current problem, however, is that a large number of your agents have failed to report in. It's not unusual for them to late from time to time, but some of them have been gone for weeks. Sensing something is amiss, you have some of your remaining spies look into their disappearance. Finding out what happened isn't difficult. The local sorcerer lord had heard rumors from some of his senior troops of a group of men trying to hire experienced fighters for training purposes. He concluded they were attempting to either hire them on as bandits, or to train a number of peasants to fight - potentially creating an army that wasn't faithful to him. Being a slightly paranoid sort, he had all those he could find crucified as traitors to the land. Of the nine agents you had, five are dead. The remaining four all have at least one relative who was killed and probably won't be in great mental shape for a while.
>>

>>22271628
Let's try to keep it that way. Heal her up, then find us another thing to loot, and let her do her thing as soon as she's ready. I hope that it'll bring her pride a bit on our side, by putting it in doing what we told her and not in becoming much more cunning.
I think we should graduate from caravans, and try to attack a small keep or something. Something away from our usual playground. It's okay if we don't get as much gold as usual (give it to her), if we can get more magic items (share them, taking the best for ourself without her noticing) and weapons (get them to our kobolds).

We move some of our kobold fighters to a hiding place near the town. then we lure as much of the town guard out of the town as possible. Then us and our sister attack the town guard, with Kolbolds as backup. Once they are eliminated, we move in, and loot the entire town. His patron is essentially king Nuvix. As a sorcerer he's a member of the nobility and there's a line of succession should he die.
>>
>>22272261
The thing is, I'm not sure even our agents knew we are a dragon. Publicly declaring they are ours will probably put them in a delicate position too. People don't like red dragons, even those who occasionally try to be honest, and we don't rule the area so we can't ensure that there's no reprisals.

I think we should loot only the sorcerer's place, make it look like a random, gratuitous attack, and get an agreement with a would-be successor to take over after we're through in exchange for whatever we ask for - and we're reasonable.
>>

The militia is basically any man capable of holding a spear who they can press gang for local emergencies. The total population is around 2,000. There aren't any large formations of actual troops present (they're all down south).
>>
>>22272385
If that means that a rebel or rival lord couldn't hold onto the place, then the second or third person in the line of succession is our potential ally. Our maybe the first in line of succession would like to become lord earlier, that's fine with us too.
Send our agents to search for those, and find out how ambitious each are.
Inform the appropriate one that recent actions by his uncle/father/whatever displeased someone greatly, and that he wishes to see the man replaced. If we can arrange for the lord to be vulnerable one night, along with whoever stands between our associate and the right to the throne, we could see that he's the one to do the replacing.
He should learn that we're a dragon later. Let him think we're a group of assassins or something at first. We can always blackmail him if he freaks out after the fact.

As for the adventurers, they can't get us on mom's territory. A hit-and-run should be fine, with an appropriate diversion by a kobold/elven commando.

So what do you want to do about the lord? Plot with one of his successors to overthrow him, run a basic smash and grab, lay siege to the town by raiding local farms, etc?
>>
>>22272621
start herding violent beasts in his direction, he will be weakened, and that will open up more options for us
>>
>>22272621
Yes, not yet, and definitely no. Burning farms would sire an... Undesirable reputation, which would make any later seizure of power more difficult, and could draw folks to slay us.

>>22272640
Not a bad idea. Rumors of his reign being cursed would go well with the beast-herding. This could backlash against us, however, with him blaming us for the critters, which would frankly be true.

I am for plotting with the successors and if possible the head of the militia. Anyone can be one over for a price.

>I prefer spot 2. I don't think we ever put it to a vote.
Why not, but spot 2 is occupied, and there's gold dragons nearby. It can't fit our need as a hiding place when things go south.
That's what I want spot 1 readied for. It doesn't prevent us from taking spot 2 as soon as we're ready.

As for burning a forest, it seems like a temperate forest. It won't keep burning for long where we don't fuel the fire.
>>
>>22272538
Sounds fine to me. Although they can't sustain those numbers for any length of time. Okay, a young adult black dragon is marginally weaker than we are, so attacking isn't suicide long term. Revised plan of attack is as follows:
1. Acquire troops on the ground. peasant uprising, bandits, whatever.
2. Torch the militia armory without warning. (Should massively cut down on deploy-able troops.)
3. Sac the town, steal the gold, and magic items.
>>

That too, as soon as the plot reaches completion.

No, we want to keep it valuable for our new friend.

>1. Acquire troops on the ground. peasant uprising, bandits, whatever.
We could do without, though a diversion is always good, and any successor could benefit from a peasant uprising (not bandits, it would make it obvious that our attack was supported by humans and would put the successor into suspicion). What we need is a few men in the castle to tell us where the traps and enchantments are, and maybe disable them.
>2. Torch the militia armory without warning. (Should massively cut down on deploy-able troops.)
Why not, but I'd like to get the weapons to arm our elves.
>3. Sac the town, steal the gold, and magic items.
Leave the town, loot only the castle. It'll take less time and will make our ally more useful (as in, more rich) in the future.

Your campaign against the local lord - Theris, as you've learned his name is, begins well enough. It's easy to convince your surviving agents to start spreading rumours about the king consorting with infernal powers. They are eager for revenge themselves and play the part of travelling merchants, moving between the outlying villages. The local peasants are willing enough to believe them - that taxes needed to afford king Nuvix's campaign have made the local lord quite unpopular to begin with. After only a few months the rumour that the lord has been seen contacting fiends has spread throughout the province and your knowledge of the technicalities of summoning mean the stories are reasonably convincing to anyone skilled in the arcane arts.

After nearly a month, you receive word from an agent who has managed to get in contact with a minor noble. He is fourth in the line of succession and is quite eager to see Theris and his sons out of the way. He doesn't know your true nature, only that you have issues with Theris's continued survival.
>>
This in itself isn't enough to get him removed, so you start wiping out a number of travelling merchants. Attacking just before rain, to wash away the blood, you refrain from using your breath on them (not that you need it). The unexplained disappearance of so many traders quickly starts to cause serious problems for the already strained local economy. With food shortages and the petty lord's own activities, popular discontent looks set to boil over before too long. Unfortunately, at this point a few witnesses escape your attacks and the town is quickly informed that a dragon has been seen in the area. This seems to provide a rallying point for Theris as he is able to play off the locals fear of dragon attacks to regain much of his popularity.

Eventually, you learn from your pet noble that lord Theris has been secretly summoned to the capital to explain the rumours of fiendish bargaining.

He will be travelling secretly with a few of his guards. Do you wish to pursue him?
>>
>>22279602
If he hasn't reached the capitol yet, just ambush him on his way.
>>
>>22279602
No. To complete the plan, we need to kill his sons along with him.
Also, why would a dragon attack a lord travelling secretly, without much money on him ? It will let people know we're behind everything.
>>
His group looks like one of the regular band of troops that patrol the roads, though they're moving much faster than normal. You could (if things go to plan) hit them as they get closer to the capital and make them apparently disappear.
>>
>>22279775
I like that plan. He probably has shiny magic items too.
>>
>>22279799
We need to bring our Sis along though. Because Although his adventurer friends killed a weaker dragon than us, It wasn't that much weaker
>>
Bring your sister along y/n?
>>
>>22279847
How many troops? and do any look suspiciously competent? If we can't tell or the answer is yes, bring sis.
>>
>>22279602
Seems like a peasant revolt is not possible. It wasn't very practical for us anyway.
So if we want him killed, we'll have to do it ourself. Set a date when his adventurers friends are away. Attack with our sister - since we were sighted, they might be more prepared than we want them.
Get our minor lord to visit the day before, and send us some tips as to how their defenses are set up, where are the important people's rooms, etc. He'll have to come with his best knights, then leave. While he's away, we'll attack, kill the lord and his sons and loot the place. Our sister will leave at that point. He must then ride back and we'll flee before him.
Of course, he can't learn that we're a dragon before he sees us. Tell him we'll send bandits to lead an attack on the town (that's who he'll supposedly come back to chase off), while some assasins take out the lord... See if we can find actual bandits (orcs or goblins would do fine if there's some around) to do it. Else we'll have to use kobolds, but then we must not let sister see them.
They'll harass the militia (start with burning the armory) while we attack the castle.

...
That plan is pretty lame actually.
Don't make the minor lord come back. He doesn't really need to be a hero, and the precise timing for it is to difficult to achieve.
Just attack the castle, kill the lord and his sons, take his stuff, then loot the armory too, and be on our way.
A diversion is needed, but don't send the kobolds into the town, we'd lose too many of them (though if we can find expendable people, attacking the town directly is fine). Just make them attract the militia away from the town, maybe by occupying a nearby village (eat their stuff, torment the people, leave some to escape, but don't kill without a need and don't destroy everything).
>>
>>22279847
yes
>>
>>22279775
I'm still against attacking him on the road. I'd like to replace him with someone we control, and killing him that way isn't enough for that.
>>
>>22279870
We simply need to kill his son in quick succession. Letting him clear his name with the King and expose our machinations is a horrible idea.
>>
>>22279869
>>22279856
>>22279847
Why would sis agree to attack someone who doesn't carry gold ?
>>
>>22279884
He probably doesn't know of our machinations. But they'll be obvious to the king if after his disappearance, a dragon attack his castle and goes out of his way to kill his three sons.
>>
>>22279889
Because she has a debt to repay we bailed her out and saved her from death.
>>
>>22279889
Because she listens to us by default now? Also, he's a noble of course he has gold and magic items.
>>
>>22279899
>his disappearance
And that's if the plan goes well and we don't leave witnesses. If we attack with our sister that's unlikely.
>>
>>22279904
...Adding a second dragon makes it more likely that someone will escape? How the hell do you figure that?
>>
>>22279904
Our sister has gotten pretty good at killing things it think it is less likely they will escape with her along
>>
>>22279902
He probably left all of his gold in his castle.
>>22279900
She does, but I don't think she cares much to repay her debts. I'd rather let this debt fester in her mind too.
And "please do me a favour, I want to attack this worthless armed band, i might need your help, and I can't give you an explanation why" isn't something a dragon in our position should say to his sister.
>>
>>22279928
But she would want some of the loot from the castle and he s in the way of that she helps us kill him she gets her cut from the keep simple as that.
>>
>>22279911
More likely that someone we didn't see saw us. A flying dragon is visible from far away, and we only have one amulet of invisibility.
>>
>>22279928
Noted. So we say its a noble traveling and vulnerable. Probably has some sweet magic items.
Anyway, I count two people for bringing her along, one against. Guess she is coming along.
>>
>>22279939
Why would he be in the way to the castle while he's away ?
If we attack the castle, I'm all for asking our sister for help. But if we kill the lord on the road, we can't really attack the castle without making any intelligent person think we're responsible for the two events.
>>
>>22279960
So? All we have to do is successfully kill the other heirs between our man and the throne and fail to kill him. If we drag off sufficient loot, people will just assume the obvious happened.
>>
>>22279960
Who's wo say we killed the lord if no one escapes it could have just been bandits. The road is a dangerous place full of perils. Hell we may even be able to get bandits to do it for us.

>>22279978
also this
>>
>>22279978
> If we drag off sufficient loot, people will just assume the obvious happened.
Yeah. That someone wanted both the lord and his sons dead and stroke a deal with a dragon to do the job.
People will assume a random attack only if it doesn't seem like we went out of our way to kill the lord or his sons : so only if we kill them while they're all in one place.

There's no hurry to kill the lord. We should wait until he's back in his castle.

You misunderstood. I didn't declare that.
My point was that when making plans, we should take into account that chance can be against us, because bad luck with a plan that makes us take unecessary risks is worse than bad luck with a plan that try to minimize negative consequences.
>>
>>22280361
Bringing the sister along does minimize negative consequences. Given that the amulet can only make us invisible for minutes at a time, bringing her along does not substantially increase risk of detection prior to the attack.

Though you had tried to find some bandits to attack the sorcerer-lord for you, your agents were unable to identify any that could be hired without giving away your identity. You decide against using your elves against trained soldiers, untrained as they are. Nevertheless, your attack goes well enough. Choosing to striking during the middle of the day, when the group is furthest from any visible settlements, you activate your invisibility amulet. Not wanting to leave evidence of a dragons involvement, you forgo the use of your breath weapon. The first they know of your arrival is when your front claws decapitate the two men leading the group. Continuing your flyby, the only thing you have to do is hold your forepaws out and let your speed and immense weight advantage smash nearly half of the troops.

Theris himself is one of those decapitated by your pass. The remaining men scatter on all directions, hoping that some of them might survive if you're too busy chasing down the others. You go after the group heading towards the treeline of a large copse first. Despite trying to dodge you, they are easily cut down. The remainder haven't noticed the loss of their comrades, they're too focused on riding to cover. Within minutes, they are cut down too. You quickly pick up the bodies and dump them far from the road. The site of the attack is a little more exposed than you'd like, but you don't think you were seen.
>>
"I have a new target for us. A town this time." You tell your sister.

She looks at you for a second. "That would be a new one. I've tried raiding villages before, but they never have anything worth the effort." She hadn't bothered mentioning this, but it was probably a while ago. "What makes you think this town will be worth it?" She has become slightly more cautious since her run-in with the hunters.

"By itself, not much. The main advantage is someone I've been talking to. If we can put him in charge, a steady stream of revenue becomes available, not to mention further contacts among the humans," you explain.

She rolls her eyes at this. "Letting the money come to you, where's the fun in that?"

"That would be the 'having more money' part."

She sighs at this. "Fine, lets go kill whoever's in charge."

"There are three targets, al the former rulers sons. They need to die before my puppet can gain control."

She snorts at this. "inheritance." She mutters disdainfully. She's only recently learned of the human way of passing on properties through law, rather than simply having the biggest claim it through force. It seems quite silly to her
.

"Regardless, this time it work to my advantage." She doesn't object to your use of 'my', rather than 'our'. "The town guard aren't worth mentioning and the lords fort isn't well built enough to withstand heavy attack."

You spend the rest of the morning hashing out the details of your plan of attack with her.
>>
You don't know what the former lords sons look like, other than the fact they're still children. Your would-be-puppet ruler has described them, but beyond size, sex, skin and hair colour, all humans look alike to you. As a result of this you simply intend to kill everyone in the fort.

The initial attack goes well, Your sister crashes into the fort in the middle of the night, followed shortly after by yourself. This smashes is to kindling and rubble. Modern structures really don't compare to those built during Temur's golden age. Quickly grabbing what you assume to be the chest with Theris's treasures inside, you take off again, blasting the ruins with your breath. Your sister does the same. By this point crowds are running back and forth on the street outside. This quicklt descends into a confusing near brawl as those nearby attempt to escape what is clearly a dragon attack and those from further out come to try and help put out the growing fire. With the complete collapse of the simple fort and the speed at which the fire is now spreading, no-one who was inside it is likely to have survived. You flee the scene, leaving the locals to deal with the small inferno.
>>
Days later you hear from the new ruler of the town of Coloth, lord Turin. He appreciates the help in gaining power and certainly won't forget who helped him win it. He would like to meet with you at some point - he believes you to be a merchant who had suffered from one of Theris's policies. The attack itself is explained away as dragons, hearing about the death of the previous lord, senses a time of weakness and raided the treasury. Turin himself believes you had managed to extract a favour from the family of dragons known to live to the north - you could help but laugh when you heard that. Unfortunately, he wasn't willing to pay for that favour. He considers dragons too unreliable to be used for such things and generally too destructive for use against town you want intact.

The town itself suffered some fairly serious damage as the fire spread and it will take several years to fully recover. Your remaining agents seem to be quite satisfied with Theris and his son's deaths, believing it to be suitable revenge for their own dead family members.

Well, if we want our elves to learn sailing, we must first set them up on the coast. If we help mom's humans colonize the forest, we might be able to borrow some of them to help our elves too. And they need the road.
Anyway, until they get ships, our elves need a road too.
If you're against burning it, I'm okay with replacing fire by our sheer physical power.

As for lair location, as I said, making ourself an emergency lair somewhere far from other dragons does nothing to prevent us from conquering another dragon's lair. It might possibly even help.
>>

I agree, we need to start training an elite squad of elf rangers. Pick out a handful of elf maidens for intense training and conditioning, call them Daughters of the Dragon or something. >call them Daughters of the Dragon or something. Give them emblems made from our scales and mark their faces with our claws (this is so they become ugly in the eyes of other men, and stay virginal).
That's not very classy.
I'm against scarring, because I want to mark our difference with their former master. I don't really care for their virginities either (not that a few more scars on those elves would change much to their love life), on the contrary, I wish they would reproduce faster. Especially the most willing of our slaves.
And daughters of the dragon is kinda corny.

Let's just go for efficiency. Select the best of them regardless of gender, go for intense training and conditioning, and do not give them a name. An arcane mark is enough.
All elves talented for combat should learn to fight. Rangers and barbarians first, duskblades as soon as we find a teacher. All elves talented for magic should learn to use it, not only in wizardry, but also in sorcery and divine magic.

I want one or a few of them to be a druid worshipping our fire.

So your plans are to set up a few boltholes in lair locations 1 and 2; try and get the elves up to a reasonable standard of combat and expand on their other skills; find a way to transport your slaves to a new lair and study as hard as possible with Garran, yes?

If we can get a few clerics, druids and sorcerers among our slaves, it should be good.

>find a way to transport your slaves to a new lair
We seem to have agreed that teaching them to build and use boats was the best option. For that we need a teacher for them. We can get a carpenter among mom's humans - negociate that with her if it's needed, offer help and coordination to her colonization plan - but an actual shipwright (force or deception are okay to get him) would be better.

Eight months pass.

While your elves are eager to learn how to defend themselves, many of the mutilation they suffered under Imgodidartak get in the way. One of the younger, less damaged ones is starting to show some skill with a blade and is already a capable woodsman. Given several years to hone his skill he might end up making a decent ranger. On the non-combat front, one of your youngest elves - one born under your rule is showing a remarkable affinity for the nature of the forest. She can already predict what the week's weather will generally be like with near total accuracy. She hasn't managed to cast any spells yet, but you can feel a small flicker of magic when she tries. In time, she might become a capable druid. Unfortunately, despite being raised by your cult, her strong connection to nature means she is more loyal to the forest than to you.

Attempts at getting hold of a shipwright prove successful. Your human agents are able to identify one who came from an outlying village and pretend to carry a message from there as their caravan stops in the city. They tell him his father is seriously ill and might not survive the week. He immediately sets off for his home village and you are able to pick him up. He's currently staying with your kobolds, as the elves might take pity on him after hearing how he was tricked. They wouldn't do anything, but there's no need to risk doing something to weaken their loyalty to you. Building a ship is still a major undertaking and even with experienced supervision will still take a great deal of time and effort.

While Garran is a capable spellcaster, he is not as good a teacher as you would have liked. He is accustomed to students with far less of an ego than you and his teaching style is sufficiently different that progress has been slow. He has a lot to teach you and your elves, but initial progress is slow.
>>
Your backup lairs have been established in the northern mountains and on the island. Each has a compliment of twenty kobolds with the necessary skills to start building a lair. You've transported four of your more skillful elves to each site to scout the surrounding terrain. It is during one of your checkups on the mountain lair that you receive a visitor. As you are leaving the small overhang that conceals the growing cavern the kobolds are now living in, you find yourself face to face with a middle aged woman. She peers at you, her bone white hair styled in such a way that it almost like horns dropping down from her temples. Her face is almost skull like and her eyes beady. She smells strongly
of swamp water.

"Well, I was wonder who had been sniffing about." She speaks in perfect draconic, with an accent that suggests black dragon. "I take it you're the new neighbour." It's a statement, rather than a question.
>>
^^^^^
How do you want to respond?
>>
>>22282458
"After a fashion. And you are?"
>>
The boat thing is silly, better if we grabbed a blacksmith or weaver or something useful.

Getting a competent navy will take ridiculous amounts of work and labor in training, better if we just took a functioning navy or pirate group and made it ours.
>>
>>22282517
second this. also do not be rude about it she may be older and far more skilled than us.
>>
>>22282571
She is older than us. She has to be around mothers age to be able to shapeshift.
>>
>>22282517
Probably the hidden black.

>>22282458
>>22282516
I suppose it depends how agreeable the old neighbours are. What do you think, do I get a welcome party, or should I invite them for tea ?

Don't tell it that we're only making a backup lair.
>>
>>22282442

THIS >>22282517

Do NOT be rude to her! We do not want a face full of acid or her resuming her dragon form and curb-stomping us.
>>
>>22282458
>>22282571
She's surprisingly well-informed. I did not think anyone would notice the few kobolds we sent to that removed place.
I wonder if she was keeping watch on this particular place, or if she has enough agents (birds or vermin, I guess ?) to chance upon our kobolds.
Regardless, it seems like we were not discreet enough. We must improve on this grounds. Anyone has an idea ?
I'm also surprised that she doesn't sound hostile.

Tell her about it.
"I take it you're not hostile to new tenants ? I can't say I was expecting you to learn about it so soon and not prevent it. I must also compliment you on your tact for waiting for my arrival instead of asking my kobolds"
>>
FYI
we be in autosage gentlemen!
>>
>>22282442
>He's currently staying with your kobolds, as the elves might take pity on him after hearing how he was tricked.
But we can't use our kobolds to build the ship, as we're keeping them a secret.
Just have him teach the kobolds how to improve their carpentry work in their tunnels, let him some time to get his bearings and learn how to deal with being a servant to a dragon.
Then get him out of there, with the instruction not to discuss his past with the elves.

Before he does any work with them, they must settle on the coast anyway. My idea of the road and the human/elvish village at the end wasn't popular, so anyone got another plan ?

>>22282535
Let's teach them to fish with some small simple boats first. We have some time on our hands. A competent navy isn't necessary, just a small flotilla capabale of carrying our elves and kobolds from A to B in one trip.
OP said they were able to make weapons, so I guess a blacksmith isn't needed, and I suppose they also know how to weave - they're not going around naked, are they ?
If they don't, that's gonna be a problem when we need sails.
>>
>>22282875
So we need a new thread soon then

"After a fashion. And you are?" You respond calmly.

"I am Donoapirtha. I would assume you haven't heard of me, but judging by your reaction, you do not my presence is not entirely surprising." She injects some slight curiosity into her tone.

You nod at this. "I suspected there was a fairly powerful black to the south." You aren't normally one for giving away compliments, even if they are true, but until you have a better idea of her disposition you intend to be polite. "It was fairly obvious the road through the swamp was maintained by some potent magic. The travellers I questioned also gave hints - not that they knew it. Admittedly, I wasn't expecting a visit." Entirely true. You had taking the long route to avoid passing near her territory and had hoped she wouldn't notice your presence in the mountains.

She smiles slightly at this. "Yes, those travellers were quick to tell everyone about how they'd met a dragon on the road and had been stopped so it could have a conversation. For a moment I though I might have a brass on my hands - though they were quite drunk at this point and a good bit of what they were saying came out as gibberish." She pauses, then smiles. "No doubt you're wondering why I'm here. It is simple, I have little interest in affairs outside of my territory, so as long as you remain outside the swamp and do not interfere with the flow of trade through the pass I will ignore you."

You regard her for a moment. "That sounds...perfectly fair."

Before you can continue, she speaks. "Then it is settled. Hopefully, we will not meet again." With this, she mutters something and teleports out.

>>
>>22283061
We'll leave her be, don't trust her for shit though, we will leave the swamps untouched.

I suppose we should also move our focus away from this area
>>
let me run some numbers here. Teleport is a 5th level spell, so minimum caster level 10th. Well screw me sideways with a crowbar, we have at least an ancient dragon here. Unless she is cheating with dimension door, in which case she is "only" Very Old.
>>
>>22283269
Or a dragon who can cast as a wizard.
>>
>>22283269
so she could beat our ass up and down the mountain?

leave well enough alone I say, we should take up some extra defenses
>>
>>22283305
Granted, although most dragons are kinda lazy about getting stronger. Although that doesn't change the fact that she can still kick our ass. Do you have anything planned or should we time-skip again. Honestly I think we should try sparking up a "friendly rivalry" with an appropriate dragon. We do need someone to train against.
>>
I suppose we should scout away from the swamps
>>
>>22283393
I suppose we could fuck around a bit with the copper dragon
>>
>>22283305

>>22283269

Shiiiiiiit.....let's do as she says and leave the swamp alone and don't interfere with trade through the pass. Work up some extra defenses in this area just in case.

She could decide the agreement is fine, but I prefer to be prepared just in case she wakes up one morning and decides not to tolerate our nearby presence anymore. Blacks are chaotic evil and (while not dumb like whites) not the sharpest tools in the shed compared to a red like us.
>>
>>22283425
A copper should appreciate a good prank war.
>>
At the moment I have a rough idea for things that can occur. I'll post it next week as we're in autosage now and I don't think I'll keep going long enough to warrant a lifeboat.

If you can discuss and vote on what do in the short term (a month or so), then I'll have some extra stuff to start with next week.
>>
>>22283449
Lets start taking dumps in his territory, leave them where we know he'll find them, it will make him all paranoid
>>
>>22283479
its like going to the bathroom in a cats litterbox, it pisses em off real bad
>>
>>22283471
Lets stir the pot with the nearby coppers, nothing that will make em chase, just enough to piss em off though
>>
>>22283471
we should shear up our defenses in this area, then I want to focus a little on our kobolds, get them to start a militia like we are with the elves. lets not put all our eggs in one basket
>>
>>22283471
I think the idea is to get involved in a friendly rivalry with the dragon on Island 2 to get a training partner to give us the edge back over sis.
>>
>>22283504
Possibly a plan involving some very sneaky kobolds, a trebuchet and a large pie?
>>
Rolled 13

>>22283479
>>22283504
I'd say pissing off dragons without reason isn't a good idea... but a prank war might be fun.
Start with inoffensive things, though.
Shitting on his lawn is crass. Let's just steal some stuff and replace them with other things. For example switching the population of one hamlet in his territory with another. Transport them in a big net, and intimidate them into staying in their new homes for a few months - we'll check!.

Rolling it.
>>
Rolled 6

>>22283556
Bronzes are lawful good. It would be hard to have any kind of friendly relationship with it.
Coppers would be more inclined to tolerate pranks from red dragons.

>>22283471
Next week ? Shit. I hoped the once per week rythm would end with this episode.
Can you continue for a bit tonight ? Autosage won't kill the thread for an hour or so.
>>
>>22283742
The idea is to find a training partner who is not sis who can help us maintain our edge. With that plus our tutor we should quickly regain physical dominance over our sis. If the copper dragon is very young, we will kick his/her ass. Although if he/she is roughly our age then things will work out quite nicely.
>>
what ever we do, we need to start trainning up our own fighting abilitys and strength, even if its as simple as working out.
>>
Rolled 9

>If you can discuss and vote on what do in the short term (a month or so)
Still think we should settle the elves with some of mom's humans, and make them learn to fish.

>Given several years to hone his skill he might end up making a decent ranger. On the non-combat front, one of your youngest elves - one born under your rule is showing a remarkable affinity for the nature of the forest.
Get to know those two more closely. Talk with them, make them understand how awesome we are.
Teach the future druid about what nature actually is - a playground that creates its own turbulent children. That's dragons. Some of them are bullies, and some of them refuse to play. But at the beginning, nature created us so that we could use her to play. She even made different kind of us to fit different corners of the playground - whites for the icy wastes, blues for the sandy wastes, etc. One might think we're only forces of destruction, but dragons existed for all time and nature is still here. Compared to humans, orcs and dwarves, a dragon is much more in tune with nature. We do not destroy nature, we just toy with it. A burning tree and a broken rock is still nature, in its characteristic chaotic state, much more than the order humanity, or others, imposes on it. Nature resists us, as it's made for us. The only thing we can really destroy is this humanoid order.
Elves should side with nature, who sides with us.
Then bring her to fly around for while and burn things, and ask her if it's not beautiful and fun and right.
>>
>>22283976
Also, push her and support her into developping her talent. Try to orient her into becoming a fire-themed druid.
Make her remember, fire is natural. We're sapient fire.
>>
>>22283976
We will be the very embodiment of the aspects of nature. it is said all magic flows from the blood of dragons, this universe was designed with Dragonkind in mind
>>
>>22284028
Volcano Lair, we must find
>>
>>22283976
Yeah, while all druids have a connection to nature how they interpret what that connection means in terms of practical actions and opinions on other matters varies incredibly wildly. With no other druids around to instruct her in their dogma, she'll be stuck making up her own- even if that ends up being incredibly strange by more conventional standards.

As long as we're talking about the elves, the matter of facial tattoos came up; that's something for later, perhaps, but for now consider that many/most of them are wearing veils as their own distinct cultural thing. While these elves have mostly had their love of artistic pursuits slaughtered out of them I think we can make an exception if they're, say, embroidering clothing that they wear all the time to show their devotion to their master and exalt our glory. Elves with dragon veils is a nice intermediate step, I think- it's even symbolic; the green marked their faces and the red covers those markings, or something like that.
>>
>>22284215
we should get them doing artistic thing; gold and silver smithing, weaving, stone carving the like, we should have a nice lair with nice things

also if we melt some of our coins down and made into certain items they are easier to track if ever stolen, plus it would make us look nice to them
>>
Rolled 4

>>22284057
I think it's too early to settle far away from the area we're in. But we can take the time to scout out some volcanoes we saw during our continental tour.
I'm mainly interested in the one just under the yellow line as it crosses the mountain in >>22270587. Can we get a more detailed map of this region and some information about the dragons we're sure to find around there ? Maybe we can bring an elf with us to interrogate local scholars. With draconic and elvish, the language barrier shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Take note of the humanoid and monstrous humanoid tribes on the way.
Do some random acts of "goodness" to them if we see a tribe needing one, for example by killing a big monster or changing the flow of a battle. Then go away, and let the rumor do the rest. It could be useful some decades down the line when we'll conquer the plains.
>>
>>22284215
>the matter of facial tattoos came up
Facial tattoos are not the best kind. But I'd like to see them with yakuza-style tattoos of a red dragon. Something that can be completed and enlarged over the years as they prove their devotion to us.
>>
>>22284291
I agree with this, but of course only a few of them should dedicate themselves to it.
If we get them to make tradable goods, we could use our future fleet to make some profit, and it would be a good way to gather information in human towns.

By the way, earlier on, our mother was trying to find out how allow maritime trade without giving a chance of escaping to her humans. Maybe we can expose her our project of making our own ships, and propose to make enough for two if she can dedicate some kobolds or humans. She can fill hers with kobolds, who would do the trading without much risk.

I'm not sure how the bronze dragon near the coast would react, but if she were to accept and if things work, it would benefit the both of us.
