slightly tangential, but a recent thread about mary sues directed me towards this

That's one way of seeing what would happen if HP was rule 63'd.
I hope it doesn't crush your ideas OP. A single page made me feel depressed.

As for a rule 63'd version of the canon, I don't see why it wouldn't work.
Though I don't see how you would do much with it, aside from creative name changes (which you seem to have nailed, by the looks of it)

Riddle did it because of his Ego and the fact, as crazy as he was, he did care enough about his Mother at the time that he wanted to in some form keep the name she gave him.

The trouble with the Wizarding World in HP is twofold

1) If something can't be done with magic, it's not worth doing
2) They never developed culturally beyond the Victorian era

#2 has bugged a lot of people over the years, in terms of attitudes. Hermione was about the only person who ever tried to bring some modern-era Muggle thinking to that world ('slavery is bad', 'women can be things other than teachers, nurses and wives')

But Point 1 was what really rustled my jimmies. So you've just had a war, and there's a shit-ton of people with PTSD, not to mention psychologically traumatised torture victims (cf Neville's parents) What do you do? In Wizarding Britain, you lock them up forever because there's no handy reversal spell. You don't book them a block of 20 sessions with a professionally-trained counselor, and offer them some medication to help them function, because that's not the Wizarding Way.

I mean, Madam Pomfrey can't fix shortsightedness. Bitch, please, Muggles have been sorting that shit with lazers for 30 years.

And apparently, nobody had heard of forensics either.

You could make a point that the retardness is built in and self reinforcing. All the smart ones tried to do pull a Voldermort but got shot down by the muggles (see the Spanish Inquisition and other witch hunts), so they worked out a deal to hide away and never bother the muggles again. The fact the Minister of Magic has a direct line to the British PM leads me to think the MoM exists as a shadow ministry in Britain

Males do some pretty sexual shit. Have females do the same stuff and because of our conditioning to look at them as sexual it just gets worse.

Not that this is a bad idea, and not hoping to start some sexism shitstorm. Just saing, guys are sexual, female is presently the sexually idealized gender. 1+1 here on why this looks super sexual if you thought the original genders doing the same actions was somehow less or non-sexual. It's all in your head.

The only evidence we've seen points towards other societies being no better.
The French are evidently still discriminate against half-giants to some degree as Mme. Maxime keeps up a charade that she isn't one constantly.
Durmstrang is apparently cool with having an admitted Ex-Death Eater running the place.
The absence of magi-tech is tied to an international accord so presumably no post victorian tech is a universal rule for wizards.

Perhaps more tenuously (given the shit real nations get away with), being cheerfully in favor of slavery, mistreatment of prisoners and institutional racism hasn't done shit to hurt Magical Britain's position in the international community.

I've kind of found this was a problem as well.

The world is wonderfully imaginative, but it doesn't really hold up as an integrated setting. It exists as a wonderful backdrop for Harry's coming-of-age story. It exists to give the kiddiewinks a chance to marvel at the wonder of a delightfully quirky world.

But, if you look at it with a trained eye, it kind of falls apart. Things exist, on a cultural/technological level, because Wizards Think This Way, or because That Makes The Story Work.

Not that this makes harry Potter bad, per se. Only that it's basis as a fleshed-out setting are imperfect

Check out this thread here, there's some real good content for discussion

The really disappointing thing was that it really looked like the latter books were going to be about how fucked the wizarding world is and trying to fix it. We saw more and more social injustice as the series went on and then it was never fucking resolved.
At the end of the story the war was over but nothing had really changed for the better, they still had a society where it was totally ok to have a statue of a goblin, house elf, and centaur all fawning over a human as their lord and savior in the middle of a government building.

Hard Mode: Do the above as a Muggle.
>>
>>22289906
That could work, but then you might as well just use the percentage system since it wouldn't be much different.

I kind of like the idea of having six "ranks" for each spell class and skill group. Works really well with the fluff if you think about it.

>Potions: Year 5

>>
>>22290032
That's actually where I got sick of it and stopped reading. When it was just Harry spewing pseudo-science to make himself sound smart, I could skip over it, but now every other chapter seems to be an Ayn-Rand-level filibuster of dialogue on Yudkowsky's personal philosophy.
>>
>>22290020
Have to admit, trying the ranks into the universe would be appealing.

I think the trick is probably figuring out how hard casting a given spell would be on the fly. You'd probably want a couple of tables for things that'd influence a given kind of magic.

Levitation might just be levitation base difficulty plus size modifier, but transfiguration is going to need a size difference, similarity in material, all kinds of shit.

Rowling actualy commented on that. In a one on one, the wizard wins, unless it's an ambush. In a war, hogwarts gets bombed into dust while wizards are mowed down in automatic gunfire.

Yeah, thats what I was thinking of. Its all very well to have a one hit kill spell, but we've got those as well. Its called a Royal Marine Commando sniper team with Accuracy Internationals, and they've got longer range than the Advera Kedrava
>>
>>22290099
Well, let's say you have a skill of 4 with Wingardium Leviosa. You roll the d8 and get a 3. You cast the spell correctly. Your target, if they know a spell that could be used to stop yours somehow, can cast that if they want to stop your spell. Might have to include DEX ranks or something to show if someone if quick enough to try and stop your spell. Or have a skill for duels and use that, since that would fit in the universe a little better. If there is a tie for the duel score then you could use DEX or something though.

Why the d8? It allows you to have a skill of 7 (number of years spent in school) and still have 8 be an automatic failure no matter your level.

I'm actually pretty sure she commented that in a one on one between a wizard and a muggle with a thoroughly ordinary shotgun, the muggle wins.

This has pissed off anyone who actually pays attention to Wizarding capabilities for years, but it makes perfect sense if you remember that Rowling wizards are fucking morons who don't understand the implications of their own abilities.

Not necessarily, the traditional way of teaching magic is by family traditions (and maybe some kind of master-apprentice method ?). We know 3 places were those were replace by centralised schools, but that doesn't mean it the same everywhere. Maybe emigrant wizards would have rejected that and stick to old methods ? (maybe not)

Fun fact. Rowling has said that in a fight between a wizard with the Killing Curse and a muggle with a shotgun, the muggle would win pretty much every time.

I think interesting things could be done with spirits.

I rather like the idea that they are kind of like living spells.
You don't literally summon an otherworldly spirit to do things for you, you create a persistent spell which functions semi-autonomously and is sustained by your magic.

Shamanistic magic can't apply the same kind of direct bursts of force that european magic can, but on the other hand you can tell your spirit, "that guy, hiding around the corner, go fuck him up."

>>22290683

I can only imagine that it's different cultures evolving different ways to harness the same power.

Native cultures might go for a more Animist/Totemist style, using the techniques passed down from previous generations, while a more post-Enlightenment European Wizardry tradition might be more focused on scholarly research into experimental forms
