The Following Thread Will Contain At Least One Of The Following: Questing, Gundam, Zeon Fanwank, Brainwashing, Zabi Apologists, Slapping, Newtypes, and Horribly Contrived Plot Devices. Hide This Thread If You’re Not Buying Any, Because It Is Exactly What It Says On The Tin.

Previous Threads can be found at: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Bright%20Quest

Quest runs from 9:30am, PST, until 2pm PST OR until interest peters out / I need to sleep.

The system:
Roll D20's. On rare occasion, I'll ask for a D100.

What is a NewType?
NewType powers, since they are plot breaking, will be based on a point system.

Currently:
Bright Noah has 1 NTP
Char Aznable has 1.5 NTP
Amuro Ray has 2 NTP

For every natural 20 you roll, you'll get .5 NTP. If you roll an 11 on a d20, it will be worth .25 of a NTP. Double rolls on a D100 will also garner .25 NTP.

You can exchange 1 NTP for an automatic critical success / plot breaking idea. You can also exchange 1 NTP to reduce an opposing main character's plot armor by 1/4 or 1/2 on any actions you take against them - the amount reduced will be situational, and depend on what you're planning on doing.

Here's the general gist of what we're working with:
Bright Noah joins Zeon instead of the Earth Federation (For Reasons Yet Unexplored), and is promoted to Captain of the Musai class cruiser ‘Longfellow’ for his actions during the One Week Battle / Battle of Loum. Newly minted Majors Bright and Char Aznable are ordered by Dozle Zabi to perform a joint investigation of the rumored Earth Federation Mobile Suit in development at Side 7.

Last thread we managed to find a ZIRCON Agent in the form of Jane Conty, and I was still working on exposition.

Right. Back to it.

RE: Current Mission Plans
Siegfried and Flamel leave Solomon at 1900 HRS.
Siegfried will travel through Loum Shoal Field, and will use gravity slingshot maneuver to rendezvous with S7, while Flamel will travel via S6 route.

Siegfried estimated to arrive minimum 10 days prior to Flamel. Upon arrival, Bright Noah, two commando teams, any intelligence assets, and three MS pilots will infiltrate S7. The commandos will scout location of EFF MS Dev, and hold position within Maint. Acc. Tunnels. Bright Noah, IntAssets, and MS Pilots will attempt infiltration of MS Dev Facilities directly, in a bid to gain intel and documentation on EFF MS, as well as work towards primary goal of capture, secondary goal of destruction of EFF Prototype MS.

I’m still thinking on it, but the mission may also involve a False Flag ‘Captured’ Zudah op. If that comes together, I believe it to be one of the better ways to infiltrate the EFF R&D teams to gain intel. Several things are still needed before it can be attempted, however – a ZIRCON/EFEMIRAL double agent, S7 points of contact, and an EFF cruiser would lend even more credibility.

We’ll see what Loum feels up to providing.

As always, my XO, Lt. Mohai Bret, will inform you of which plan was utilized upon your arrival to S7. We will undoubtedly appreciate your assistance in extracting our teams and any captured enemy material.

-Major Bright Noah

Bright Noah leaned back into his chair. As he had told Char Aznable in the email he sent, the false flag operation would be tricky to pull off. It would require extensive setup, and relied on external factors he had little control over. He would need access to Earth Federation black ops documentation, Earth Federation uniforms, and preferably an EFF vessel - such as a Salamis or a Magellan battleship. And while the debris field at Loum might well provide access to derelict hulls, he would need to be very lucky to find one intact.

As he considered the situation, the intercom on his door chimed. “Lieutenant Hatzenbuehler requesting permission to enter, sir,” came from the speaker a moment later.

“Enter,” Bright said. The door unlocked and Jean strode in looking quite annoyed. He was muttering something about Pezun under his breath but quickly snapped to attention and saluted. Bright quirked an eyebrow and asked, "Something about the technicians on your mind lieutenant?"

“It's about the Zaku to Zudah link-ups, sir,” Jean said. “Considering the Zaku’s speed relative to the Zudah, the techs have devised a multi - point harness control rig. If the Zudah careens out of control, or threatens to blow, we'll be able to cut the linkages - and by cut, I mean use the heat hawk to sever them, sir.

Bright blinked at that. “Not quite what I had in mind, Lieutenant, but that should work. What's stopping the Zudah from smashing into something after the link is down?”

Jean propped himself up on the corner of Bright’s desk. “The techs are trying to set up a ‘ten second - no input, go to full stop and reorient’ protocol, along with a S. O. S. on shortwave. Christine said something about the AMBAC emergency protocols slaved to a hardware interrupt switch on a timer.”

“Sounds good. When will the first one be ready?”
>>
>>22394326
(Dropped my trip. huh.)
“Six hours, assuming there's no problem slaving the Zudah's control input to the Zaku II's on board computer. Rival manufacturers and all that, I'm guessing.” Jean shrugged, “But… I'm not certain this is going to work for that 'Triple' unit. According to Chris, the damn thing's so much faster than everything else we have on this tug, that even with the rigging, it's a goddamn hazard.”

Bright's brain started to wave its metaphorical arms and say 'oh, oh! Eureka!' "We'll tie it down."

"What? Look, we’re saying tethering it to the Zaku's isn't gonna work-"

"I heard you,” Bright said, cutting him off. “That's why we'll tether it to the Siegfried's prow. The Zudah's only explode when under an extended full burn, right?” Jean nodded, uncertain, and Bright continued, “Well, we'll let the damn thing try pulling some real weight. Someone will still need to be standing by in a Zaku on the hull, to input commands via the harness, and if the damn thing wants to explode, we'll cut it loose."

"Wait, wait, wait. . . won't the thrust pull the Koomusai right out of it's mooring clamps?"

"On a standard Musai?" Bright replied, "Yes. The Siegfried, however, has a shield 'nose' covering the Kommusai bay. If we attach the tethers there-"

"Less risk to the pilots overall, for a minor risk to the ship and the Kommusai," Jean replied slowly, beginning to understand.

Bright spread his hands, “I’m not saying that it’s entirely safe,” he paused, “But it’s safer.”

"If that actually works, it might be easier to use that setup for all of them."

“Maybe,” Bright acknowledged. “For the time being, let’s test one set of the SJ’s and ZZ’s via Zaku harness, and the other by ‘tug’, and see if the systems return equal values.”
>>
>>22394345
“Stress testing?” Jean hazarded.

Bright nodded, as his computer beeped. “Assuming it’ll work. Go rustle up Christine and ask her about this idea’s feasibility while I check on this.”

Jean offered a sloppy salute and hurried out.

Bright opened his inbox and found the available pilot rosters he’d asked for. There were currently eight pilots on Solomon that could be easily transferred to his experimental Mobile Suit wing – he paused at that thought. Yes. He did effectively have two MS wings now. Most Musai could only hold 3 Zaku II’s – they’d done a quick field job on the Longfellow’s hangar, using some spare HLV parts to allow for an additional Zaku I to squeeze in, so he was used to a slightly larger compliment already. Speaking of….

He picked up his phone and dialed the pilot’s ready room. “Chance here,” came a crisp, confident voice.

“Sergeant Tavolacci.”

“Sir!”

“Have you seen Corporal Retersdorf since the crew transfer?”

There was a pause. “Uh, yeah. She’s right here sir, playing pool while the grav’s still on – You want to talk with her?”

Bright could hear a woman’s voice say ‘It wasn’t me’ over the line from a distance. “No, I just didn’t recall seeing her during your ‘discussion’ about the Mobile Suit transfer at dock thirteen. Wanted to be sure she was aboard, is all.”

A brief moment as this was relayed to Ezra, and she took the line. “The order was to transfer the Oh Sixes, sir, so I was saying my good byes to the old gal,” she said, referring to her MS-05 Zaku I. “I made sure she got a good home.”

“Oh?”

“Yeah, found a slot for her on an outgoing Papua to Pezun. Some egghead wanted her for moving freight. Thought it might be a good way for Elsa to see out the war in one piece, so I dropped her off myself. A good-bye run, you could say.”

‘Oh good lord, she named her Zaku. That’s adorable,’ Bright thought, before the words ‘Papua’ and ‘Pezun’, caught up to him, and he winced. “Ah. Well, as long as you’re satisfied. And here. That was my main concern.”

“Any thought as to who’s getting assigned to what yet, bossman?” Ezra asked. “I like the lines of the new machines.”

“Test them for explosions first, worry about the rest after that,” Bright quipped. “Noah, out.”

Bright hung up the phone and began inspecting the pilot dossiers.

Available Active Pilots 2.

>There are eight available rookies (See ‘Available Active Pilots’ 1 and 2. You have eight MS – three Zaku II’s, five EMS-10b Zudah’s. You can assign any of your current pilots to any of the machines, and fill in the gaps with whoever you want.

>You can choose to ‘can’ anyone on the Current Pilot Roster for a rookie, but keep in mind Jean, Chance, Aron and Ezra have been working together as a combat team over the California Geo-Synchronous Orbital Drop Zone for five months now, and work together like the parts of a well oiled machine.

>Well, Jean’s the leader, so more like a well oiled thresher machine being pulled by an obstinate mule. But still.

>The higher ranked members of the available pilots have some personality quirks, and are set in their ways, more or less. Some are the last survivors of their unit, others have individual circumstances.

>The PFC’s are fresh from ESCDATA’s MS training division, and are more amenable to being influenced by their superior officers (and others).

>PASS stands for ‘Pilot Ability Standardized Score. Think of it like the standardized double digit number you get off an ASVAB. Higher is better, but even someone with a score of 55 might, say, have a superior spatial awareness they’ve yet been able to translate into MS agility. I say might, as that is not always the case.

>All PASS Scores were generated by a true random number generator from Random.org set on Min: 45 Max: 100. There are no ‘favorites’, just randomization. Pilot scores can be improved by further training and sheer badassery.

>I’ll do full interviews if you want them, but I assume Jean will be interviewing them all regardless, and you can get the cliff notes version of your questions answered on the fly.
>>
>>22394400
We definitely want Pamila, and probably Seabrooke. I would prefer not to have the Sergant, because having a follower as a second in command of the MS wings is probably a bad idea.
>>
>>22394400
And we are choosing 4 to create a second team, correct?

Should we create a completely new team, or allow Jean's XO to become squad leader of the second team?
>>
>>22394470
Pamila, Seabrooke, Mayrline Wayatt. Are my preferences. Although I think we should interview all four of them personally before making the decision.
>>
Rolled 2

>>22394486
I want Seabrooke (if anyone can controll the triple, than a pilot with a 90 PASS), and she's a Captain, so i say we make her squad leader of the second team.
>>
>>22394486
Chance: "You want to break up the BAND? With all due respect, I'd rather not, sir. Jean's solos work out, and I've got all the bass and beats I need from Ezra and Aron to keep us going stro- What? Why are you looking at me like that?"

Looks like Chance likes it where he is.
>>
>>22394520
Sound reasoning.
>>
>>22394520

My Thoughts on the Second team; Lourie Seabooke, Sydney Kundtz, Maryln Olenius, Pamila Pheonix

interviews are a must as we should know of any problems/issues they have. after all, we do not want to be stuck with a angsty teenage MS pilot, do we?

also Char, i assume that Sydney has some form of medical training, yes?
>>
>>22394508
I second this. Mayrline and Wyatt are good and don't have any major psychological flaws, especially Wyatt seems like a model soldier.

Not sure about Pamila, i don't like her personality, but i hope the others (being driven, competitive and disciplined) can beat her into line.

If push comes to shove we may need to apply the bright slap.

Seabooke is going to get into a fight with Jean though. Two hotheads in charge of our wings... Might be trouble.
>>
>>22394508
So, five votes for Seabrooke and a request for interviews. Seabrooke will be the first Interviewee, then.

>>22394598
Yes indeed. The cross icon indicates she's had formal medical training.

The black slots with white bands and pink dots are icons for the MS the pilot is most familiar with . Two for the Zaku II, on for the Zaku I. In case that wasn't clear.
>>
I agree with getting Seabrooke, and if Sydney is a medic that might be useful.
I wonder about Kareem as an XO to Squad 2.
>>
>>22394645
She does have the second highest PASS score of anyone we have or can get. I think she has enough potential to be worth the trouble.

Sydney has incredibly crappy traits and rock bottom piloting. As for Kareem, his piloting mediocre and he has two negative traits. I don't think he is worth it.
>>22394760
Rosser has capability, although I think Olenous is marginally better. Bit of a tossup though. Add Rosser to the list of people to be interviews.
>>
>>22394788
Agreed, but substituting Roesser as the XO. Better PASS score, and disciplined.
>>
>>22394728
That's true, though PASS can be improved through practice and battle.

Now, something interesting I've noticed about Kareem is that he's proficient with both Zaku I and Zaku II's. Could this indicate that he's a fast learner and able to pick up the peculiars of new Mobile Suits quickly?
>>

Could we please dump the paranoid, lying medic with the crappy piloting skills?

Actually, why don't we bring her on as non-combat personnel? You can always use a medic.

I thought that Jean was getting the Zudah's? Or are we mixing them up in the team?
>>
>>22394870
I completely agree. When would you even need a medic on a MS Team?

My team is still Seabooke, Phoenix, Stussey and either Rosser or Olenius. (Stussey being the XO.)
>>
>>22394898
Because Zeon needs its MS pilots piloting MS?
>>
>>22394796
Horrible, wonderful, terrible things.

>>22394837
She's also a nurse who was living at Loum, survived the Battle of Loum, and joined Zeon because she thinks the EFF fired the first nuke. Just saying. Nurse first, MS pilot second.

>>22394837
Kareem has been in so many unit's it's not funny. His piloting may be baseline, but it's steady, and he's quick to adapt. Ask him to jump, and he'll ask for which continent to aim for.

>>22394906
You can split the Zudah's however you want.
>>
>>22394906
I have no idea, but i don't want Jean in the triple. At all cost. Btw, can we review the files of the pilots we have?

>>

I think a mix would be best see who is beast at what also adds versatility to the teams
>>

well, it would be better logistically if we had the Zudahs split between the two teams, as it allows for less queuing for the Zudah bay, meaning more time spent decimating fedie forces...

YOU ARE NOW LIEUTENANT JEAN HATZENBUEHLER.

AND YOU ARE IN A BAD MOOD.

Noah, that son of a bitch, gave you a list of pilots and told you to interview them.

Okay, fine it's Jean's job (kinda) but still.

At least he had the decency to ask Mohai to call in the one Bright liked the best. Let's see here, Lourie Seabooke.

Seabrooke? Seabrooke... why the hell did that same sound familiar...?

As he opened the door to the pilot's lounge, he found a pilot lounging inside (typical).

She had a nice body that curved in all the right places, in all the right ways, and brown hair parted down the middle with an eyepat-

OH GOD.

She looked to the door. HIDE.

"You?"

Jean made a dive for under the pool table but came up short as the taller woman LEAPED off the couch and pounced on him. "You son of a bitch!"

"Ow! God, stop hitting me! It wasn’t my fault, I swear to you!"

She pushed off him, scowling. “Like hell.”

“There were feddies! Feddies everywhere! Bright said so!” He exclaimed.

“There were twelve balls. Twelve. And one Salamis cruiser,” she eyed him, balefully. “And you got *stuck*.”

“Not everyone is as good as you are, Lourie. Damn it.”

“You owe me an eye, asshole.”

The five pilots that I think are worth Considering are
Lourie Seabrooke,( everyone seems to like her)
Pamila Phenix (very high piloting skills)
Roesser (Decent Piloting skills, Pretty good traits Although adventurous could be very bad)
Maryln Olenius (Decent Pilot, good traits)
Wyatt Stuessy (Decent Pilot, good traits)

Pamila Pheonix (Hotshot Pilot, 2 bad traits)
Kareem Councilman (baseline Pilot, highly adaptable and experienced, not good traits)

>I Juaagg you guys.

Jean manages to settle down onto the sofa, looking like a spooked cat all the while. “Umn, right. I’m supposed to be interviewing you for our open pilot positions.”

“Duh, meathead. S’why I’m here.”

Sighing, Jean referred to his notes, well, Bright’s notes, but they were given to him, so it counted. "Okay, the boss is interested in you.” At he smirk, he waived his hands, “No, I mean, he’s interested in putting you on his unit-“ the smirk widened, “gah, no. No. No.” Jean took a deep breath. “Is this amusing for you?”

“Very.” She said.

“Why are you free? A pilot of your skill is rarely without a unit. Bright wants to know if you’d be a good f- addition to our roster,” Jean corrected himself.

“Well, after that ball I kept from shooting your cockpit wide open turned that one eighty mil on my Zaku one, I kinda had to go to the hospital. You know, what with the bleeding and all,” she said, twirling a finger in her bangs.

“Bullshit,” Jean said flatly. “That round hit your Zak and you proceeded to tear the balls cannon off it’s top and bludgeon him to death with it. They had to drag you off the battlefield after you RAN OUT OF AIR.”

She looked up, and shrugged, an almost innocent expression of glee on her features. “Yeah. Well, you know, Zaku sees ball, Zaku shoots ball. What can I say?”

“You could answer the question,” Jean said flatly.

“I was just released from the hospital as ‘fit for active duty’. One of the surgeries didn’t take properly, and I was getting a headache after pulling hard G’s in the suit. Turns out blood had been pooling in the empty socket. So they patched it up, fitted me for a glass eye, and after it healed – here I am.”

“Huh. That’s not going to be a problem, is it?”

“What? Saving your ass every five minutes or the eye?” Lourie asked.

“The eye.”
>>
>>22395550

“It’s fine. Honest. Here.” Lourie pulled a scrip from her back pocket and handed it over. It indeed proclaimed her fit for duty and ready to pilot. The doctor’s signature was a scrawl, but then they all are. Jean kept it, adding it to the clipboard to run through for verification.

“We got some kind of super Zudah in the unit, you think you can handle it?” Jean asked.

“Zudah?” She said, leaning forward, licking her lips. “Don’t those explode?”

“Hopefully not.”

“Huh. What’s so ‘super’ about it?”

“It goes faster than Char’s pink Zaku.”

Silence. She stared at him. He at her. Then: “Yeah, okay,” she said.

“Yeah, okay, what?”

“’Yeah, Okay,’ It might be worth saving your ass every five minutes if it means I get to go faster than the Red Comet.”

“Addict.”

“Looser.”

“Speed freak.”

“Whiner.”

Jean leaned back, most of the tension easing off of him. “I’ll be good to have you around, you glorious bitch.”

She kicked him in the shin, lightly. “Whatever, asshat. When do I get to see them?”

-------------5 MINUTES LATER-------------

“OOOuuuuooooooo~”

“You’re drooling,” Jean said, disapproval evident in his tone.

“But, they’re BLUE. Only the Gouf’s are blue. This is awesome.”

Other things that happened in June of UC 0079:

UC 0079.07

The Federal Forces succeed in miniaturizing beam weapons using energy CAP (capacitor) technology.

White Base is launched. Rollout of the first Gundam.

Zeons post MS-07 Goufs to the front lines. The first mass-production MS-09 Dom comes off assembly line, some 800 Doms will be produced.

With the RX-78 completed, the RX-79 plan gets rolling. Production of pre-production type begins and, starting with major bases, it is distributed on a test basis.

At the same time, development of various weapons for mobile suit support begins.

Sorry, i needed to get this out. I really think Zudahs are awesome, if it weren't for the explosions...

Not sure, there is probably some accidental same-fagging going on. Still, she is a definite finalist. So you should interview her anyway.
>>
>>22395770

FUNNILY ENOUGH, 'Explodes at high speed' was not a deterring factor to the EFF, and they Mass Produced the GM I anyway.

Watch the 'Exploding Zudah' Episode of MS IGLOO (4? 5?). The GM's Do It Too.
>>
>>22395828
Well, the EFF had more people to throw at the problem, and the GM has beam rifles while Zeon had none, which meant that moving quickly wasn't as critical to them (at first, at least)

Jean stopped by a phone to call bright, and let him know Seabrooke was a go. “She’ll fit in. Maybe too well.”

“Noted,” Bright said. “Next up is… Pamila Phoenix. Get on it.”

Jean hung up the phone and walked to the pilot’s lounge again.

A young girl was there, her arms folded over her thin frame, seemingly asleep. Her bright red hair, tied in a tall, fluffy pony tail, wafted in the breeze caused by the air circulation unit.

Huh.

He sat across from her and waited a moment. No response.

So, the basics, then. Loudly, he asked “What have you done to serve Zeon today?”

“I arrived on time,” She snapped, opening one shockingly blue eye. As it focused on Jean, she said, “Came when called, and am willing to serve one worthy.”

She opened her other eye, and the other eye was green. Woah. Where do the recruiters find these people?

“Are you worthy?” She asked.

Jean snapped out of it. “What?”

She quirked an eyebrow and leaned forward slightly, repeating: “Are you worthy of my service?”

"So, are you willing to serve Zeon?"

>>22396035
Shes a good enough pilot, based on her PASS. But her personality leaves something to be desired.
>>22395984

She continued to stare at him, as Jean considered the question. But Jean was not a clever man. Eventually, he replied, “Me? Maybe. But that's not the question. You'll be serving Bright Noah, and above him, Dozle Zabi, and above him, Zeon.”

She raised an eyebrow.

Jean didn’t know if he was on the right track with this or not, but asked, "So, are you willing to serve Zeon?"

“Gods, man, you’re terrible,” she said.

Jean blinked. “What?”

Before she could reply the door swished open, and Lourie slammed into the door frame, her single eye fixed on the red head. “You?” she asked, seemingly astonished.

Then the phone rang. Lourie snagged it off it’s hook and listened for a moment. “Roger, sir. Will do.” She then hung it up, and eyed Jean and Pamila both. “Bright says to knock it off, you’re giving him a headache.”

Pamila smiled. “It seems this is the place for me, after all.”

Jean looked lost. He felt lost. He said “Okay, what just happened, here?”

The two women shared a glance, shook their heads, and then Lourie walked out. “If you don’t know, sir,” Pamila said, softly, “Explaining won’t help.”

Jean scowled. Now he was getting a headache. “Try,” he ground out.

“I have been out of the academy for three months, sir, and I’ve been trying to find a NewType to work under. I was attempting to kill you, sir,” she said, pleasantly.

“With what? Mind bullets?” Jean scoffed.

“Exactly, sir. And your fellow pilot and your commander both felt it. I’d be happy to serve here.”

“After a display like that, what makes you think I’d want you here?” Jean said, bitterly.

“I promise to save your life, at least three times,” she said. “After that, you’ll really need to learn to keep up, ‘sir’. With, all due respect.”

Jean sighed. “Look, why don’t you go do…” he waved a hand in a vague, frustrated manner, “Whatever it is that NewTypes do, okay? And send in the next applicant.”

“Pilot?”

“Yes. That. Scat.” Jean growled. He got up, and grabbed a soda from the vending machine, and did his best to calm down.

A few minutes alter, another young woman entered, this one a bit heavy set, but still attractive. She had her black hair cut to drape over her right eye, and seemed a bit… over whelmed.

“Finally!” Jean said loudly, gesturing at her, She backed up a bit, surprised, but set her mouth in a firm line and headed over to join him at the table as he continued, “Someone normal!”

“Normal is odd?” She asked.

“So far, it has been. First I end up interviewing a woman who saved my life back at Loum. And she hit me. What?” he asked to her appraising glance. “She’s hot a mean left hook! And then there’s the creepy little ‘NewType’ wannabe that has everyone else complaining about ‘psychic mind bullet induced migraines’.” Jean groused.

“You’re kidding.”

“I wish. So, what’s your story?”

“Uh… I just graduated from ESCDATA MSTD last week and I want to pilot a giant robot?” She asked.

“Why?”

“Hey! Chicks dig giant robots, okay! *I* dig giant robots! They’re cool!” She said, a tad defensively. “I am allowed to like cool things!”

5 Minutes of Silence went by, with Jean just staring at Maryln. She started back.

At six minutes, she grabbed his soda, and began drinking it.

At ten minutes, she asked, “Break this down for me; is this the psychological portion of the interview, or… are you just trying the psychic mind bullet thing?”

“Mind bullets,” Jean said.

“Ah. I’m going to draw. Let me know how that works out for you, chief.”

25 minutes later, she deposited a small drawing of a Zaku I, holding so many RGM-79 Balls that they were over flowing from its arms, and a little speech bubble stated ‘Why Can’t I Hold All These Balls?’

Jean snerked.

She made a little juggling motion, and Jean laughed. “Okay, okay – I give.”

“About time. So, can I have my interview now, or did you need a nap after recess?”

Jean sighed and shook his head. “Look, you tested out on the old Oh Six C’s, right?”

“Sure did. Why?”

“We’ve got some prototypes that need piloting, is why. They’re going to be a bit hard to handle, but if you think you’re up to it, and can get along with an old war axe that survived Loum and the crazy ‘newType’ chick, you’ve got the job’.

“Just like that?” she asked.

“Just like that. I need someone on that team that I can talk to.”

“Without the being punched or mind bullets?”

“Yes.”

“Maryln.” She said, holding out her hand.

“Jean.”

Bright's phone rang. "Noah," he said absently.

“I Heard You Were Interviewing Pilots!” Came the booming voice of Field Commander Dozle Zabi.

Bright jerked up straighter, “Yes sir! I am, sir.”

“I Had An Excellent Call With My Wife And She Told Me To Make Sure Everything Goes Smoothly With My Plans, So I Want You To Take An Extra.”

A brief moment passed, before Bright said “An Extra, what, sir?”

“An Extra Everything, Of Course! Now Get To It, I Need To Call Char And See If We Can Squeeze Another Zaku In The Falmel!”

“If you have a spare HLV lying aroud, you can use the larger HLV loading door to extend the pressure seal and load four Zaku’s in sideways,” Bright said in a daze.

Jean headed outside of the Pilot’s lounge to find the next interviewee. He instead found a note, which read ‘Went to mess hall @ 1200. Will be back @ 1230 hrs. –PFC Wyatt Stuessy.’

Jean checked his chronometer. It was 1215. To be fair, he did run a bit late with Maryln, so he resigned himself to make up for it with Wyatt, and headed to the mess hall.

Jean looked high, Jean looked low. The problem was, the crewmen assembled were mostly blonde and blue-eyed.

What did he know about Wyatt that might help him find the guy? Not much.

Jean turned around, scowling. He’d have to wait, it seemed.

----------15 Minutes later, in the Pilot’s Lounge---------

A young lanky fellow knocked on the open door, and Jean looked up to see his applicant, looking a bit sheepish, walk in. “Sorry about that, sir,” he said pleasantly. “I hadn’t eaten since oh six hundred, and regulations state 3 squares, mandatory.”

Jean hefted his own hamburger in response. “No problem. I didn’t realize it’d gotten so late.”

“Busy day?” Wyatt asked.

“You could say that. I have had to deal with two kinds of crazy today, and the crazier one tried to steal my FRIES.”

Wyatt looked at Jean, then around the room, then back to Jean, “Dude. We’re on a Zeon Space battleship. The food is free. What’s her beef with you?”

“Mind bullets.”

“Uh. Okay, I have no idea how to answer that. At all. Kudos.”

Jean munched on his fires as Wyatt took a seat adjacent to him. He re read the dossier, and said “So, this here tells me you’re pretty stable – psychologically, I mean. So, tell me, what’re your thoughts on NewTypes and Zudah’s?”

Wyatt blinked. “They exist? Really? I always thought Zeon Daikun was talking more of a cultural and psychological angle, like a ‘new type of culture’ or maybe a ‘new type of understanding of human values’ or something, rather than an actual, evolved human species. Huh.”

“…not what I was expecting. And the Zudah’s?”

“What’s a Zudah?”

“Outstanding. Great marks on your pass, these on the Oh Six C?”

“No, sir – I trained in the M.S. Zero-Six F, sir.” Wyatt said proudly. “One of the few in my class who did, what with their limited trainer model release, and similarity to the Zero-Six C, but I think the F has more punch, in the thrust vectoring, sir.”

“Well. A Zudah has even more ‘Punch’ than an F-series Zaku two. Twice as much, in fact,” Jean said carefully.

A speculative gleam came into Wyatt Stuessy’s eye. “Twice as much thrust? Sir, are these going to be a full production run? That kind of speed will really put it to the Feds, sir.”

“We’re just testing these, but the answer might be no. Good results might over turn it, however. One last question…”

“Sir?”

“What color is Char’s Zaku II S model?” Jean asked.

Wyatt looked confused. “Is… Is this a trick question, sir?”

“No. Just answer, honestly.”

“It’s pink, sir.”

“Excellent.”

Jean extended a hand “Welcome aboard.”

Wyatt shook it. “Pleasure to be here, sir.”

Jean looked over to where Lourie and Ezra were playing darts with the next applicant, Kareem, who had entered the lounge at 1210, and proceeded to simply wait when asked to do so. As he approached, he heard Lourie ask, “How do you manage to hit the bull’s eye every time with that turban around your eye?”

Kareem shrugged. “I know where I am. I know my place. The dart is the same. It exists to be there, not here in my hand. When I let it go, I am simply returning it to where it was always supposed to be. It is an… inevitable result.”

Ezra thought about it, closed her eyes, then threw another dart. It came close, but did not score a bull’s eye. “I think I might understand that, either in five years or five kegs.”

Lourie tried, but the dart simply hit a 5 point zone. “Sheesh, give me targeting computers with self-adjusting sights any day of the week.”

“Wait,” Jean said. “There’s a targeting computer in the Zaku II?”

Lourie and Ezra stared at him. Kareem smiled, clapped a hand on Jeans shoulder, and tossed the dart behind his back. It gently settled into the center of the target as if it had never left.

Lourie just shook her head. “That’s impossible. I refuse to believe your marksmanship has been a fluke.”
>>
>>22399102
“Refuse to believe… and it can never be your reality,” Kareem quipped.

“Hey, I know there’s a gun camera, I usually just use that. I mean, if the enemy is in the center of the camera, it’s got to be in the center of my sights, right? There’s no way the bullet can miss.”

Lourie just looked at Jean like he was an idiot.

“Can you do that with your mobile suit?” Ezra asked Kareem. “The placement thing, I mean?”

“I know where I am, I know where I should be. Size does not make a difference. Age does,” he said. “I was better at the start of the war. Less so now. But I continue, as do we all.”

You're in the squad.

...What? Really? That's it?

Not complaining, just... it seems too easy.

"I'm going to tell the tech monkeys to start work on some Heat Darts. You're hired."
>>
>>22399136

yes. He shall be in the squad. but first;

"Answer me these questions three, and join the team shall ye"

"Question one; What is your name"
"Question two; What is your rank"
"Question three; What is the air speed velocity of our compliment of Zudahs!?"

as amusing as doing MP refferences would be, just look at him. then say
"Yeah. Welcome to the team"
then go to back to the bunk to sob softly into the pillow.

Jean does not philosophy. Bright, however, would probably enjoy a conversation with Kareem.

It's funny that Kareem is more likely to give Jean an aneurysm than any of the NewTypes.
>>
>>22399151
Maybe a little "Why are you here and not an instructor?
"And you were BETTER than getting bullseye a without seeing the target? I gotta hear this."

“I am not arguing with you about this, okay? I shoot balls with my gun just fine without your help!” Jean said, followed by a pause and a “God damn it!” to Lourie, who just smirked at him.

“You need to breathe,” Kareem said to him. Jean followed the advice, and felt remarkably better.

“So, if you’ve got the wisdom of the ages to pass down to the young and impressionable, how come you’re not an instructor at ESCDATA?” Jean asked of Kareem.

The older man shrugged. “It is not my place to decided policy, though I had thought my place there, to teach, once. As I am an expatriate, an immigrant to Zeon, they do not hold trust in me.” He scowled a bit, making his features grim. “I have lived in space for twenty five years. I can not return to earth, as it’s embrace would destroy me. I am no Earther spy.”

Jean looked confused. “What do you mean?”

Kareem gestured with his arm, and jean noticed it – several large, irregular bumps along the forearms, as if the bones had been broken and set several times. “I suffer from a light case of Osteogenesis imperfecta,” he said. “I am fine, under strain of thrust and the injuries sustainable at one third Earth gravity, as have the colonies. But, mother earth would crush my bones, and tear my flesh. I knew my place was not there, so I came to the stars while I still could. And here I shall remain, and free if I have any say in the matter.”

“Brittle bone disease? Youch,” Commented Wyatt. “My uncle had that. Entire family came up here with him and helped start a mining company. Space has treated us better than Earth ever did.”

Kareem nodded.

“So, what caused the whole dart thing anyway?” Jean asked.

“He said he took out four balls that were hiding behind a cruiser – with cracker grenades. And no line of sight,” Lourie supplied. “Of course I called him on it,” she gestured to her eye, “And of course he proved it.”

“It was your place to learn your… detriment can be overcome. I can help you, if you wish.”

Lourie’s entire face flinched. “Maybe. Let me think on it.”

Kareem nodded, gently.

Jean sighed. “Well, I’d love to have you on the squad, but we’ve run out of suits that need pilots.”

Kareem shrugged. “That is fine. My place is here.”

Jean blinked. “No, I mean, we don’t have a job for you.”

“That is fine.”

The phone rang as Jean tried to explain it a third time, “No, look – we can’t hold you here if there’s nothing for you to do, the brass would have our ass in a handbasket faster than fast for ‘wasting valuable military personnel’ or some shit!”

Kareem simply smiled, a calm expression to Jean’s growing frustration.

Ezra called out “It’s okay – we can keep him!”

“WHAT?”

“That was Major Noah. I guess Dozle called and said to take an extra along, just in case,” she supplied.

“Extra? Extra what?”

“Everything, apparently.”

Kareem spread his hands. “I am telling you, this is my place, and that I am where I am meant to be. I think you need to clam down, breathe, and listen to others more carefully.”

Jean stared at him.

Kareem handed him a dart. “Best two out of three?” He suggested.

“Never play a game you know you’ll loose,” Jean said tightly.

The older man nodded. “Exactly. May I suggest resting? It would do you good.”

Jean passed the dart back and staggered off, seeminly exhausted., muttering, “you know what? I give. I am the rock in the stream and all that nonsense.”

I just realized. The pilot with the unlucky trait was randomly selected to be Char's wingman.

And with that, I need to say good night. Work in six hours and all that.

Thanks for playing along, and I'll keep you all posted via @3xFaster as to when the next one will be. Maybe this weekend, maybe next Friday. There are various factors involved.

as always.

This was a most enjoyable session, and feel free to add the StoryBook link to your opening posts. It increases the efficiency of informing potential new players on the events thus far, without having to trawl though the archives and sift through the masses of decision and OOC posts.
Have an enjoyable slumber and see you next time

Thanks for putting that together for me. I type it up in an MS Word document, but I must admit, it has... spoilers. So this Google doc option works out well as a story only alternative.
