Well, let's see. it's shitty outside, I've got a case of coke and a bag of hot fries. let's do this thing!

War, you reflect, has an odd way of warping reality.

All through the academy and flight school, you're sure you never imagined being the navy's leading conventional ace. You're also pretty sure you never imagined you'd be flying a bleeding-edge fighter with a fifteen year old witch as a RIO in a witch squadron from an island in Alaska.

You're damn sure you never imagined you'd be dealing with the shock of realizing that your fifteen year old RIO is suffering from some post traumatic stress of her own, sitting in the White House library crying her eyes out, leaning on the shoulder of a martian war medal of honor winner.

You're sitting just across the room- trying to let the retired admiral and your RIO talk in private while you talk to Georgette Mackintosh- his wife. You're not doing so well processing it- you'd had your nagging doubts, little voices that kept telling you she wasn't ok, but you didn't- couldn't- act on them in time.

“So,” Georgette says, carefully. “Did you know?”

You shake your head, miserably. “I-I had no idea. They told me how she was right after I...We went down, but I never expected it to be this bad. She never said anything, and I just chalked everything else up to her being happy to see me.”

Georgette nods. “And she wouldn't say anything. What girl wants to tell her hero she's broken?”

[] “She's NOT broken. What can I do to help her? I don't want to see her hurting like this.”
[] “I... guess not. What can we do?”

Georgette looks over at Nick and Samantha and sighs. “I'm glad you don't think she's broken either.” She says, her shoulders briefly slumping. “ She's not, but she probably thinks she is. Nicholas did, after the war.”

You look over at the pair with some surprise- he seems like a relatively put-together individual, and certainly not someone with combat fatigue or whatever it is you're supposed to be calling it now. “You mean he..' you trail off as Georgette nods.

“He did, yes. Probably still does- things like that never heal all the way. It took a lot of love and patience to help him through it, and it was a very gradual thing.” She looks at you with a sad smile on her face. “Do you think you can do that? Can you really still perform your duties as a pilot at your best, and give Samantha the support she's going to need?”

The only way we could have avoided this is if we'd ejected and let the witches carry us back too. But then the plane would likely have ended up with the reds.

If we'd done the former, we almost certainly would have died because no merlin to shield the plane.

If we'd done the latter, we'd have our own guilt issues for letting Rand and Rudel get shot down and captured by the soviets.

“There's a whole squadron around us, too.” You say. “They'll help out too. They damn sure won't us try and do this alone.”

Gerogette looks thoughtful for a second. “Are you sure? Your commander may insist she be sent to a rear area to see a mental health professional.”

“Not if Merlin and I didn't want her to.” You say with some confidence. Ice trusts you, right?

Georgette shrugs. “If you're sure.”

A knock on the door interrupts you. Ice's voice drifts through. “Frank? Merlin? You two ok in there?”

Merlin's head snaps up. “F-frank, don't let her in! I-I don't want to drag any more of my friends in my mess!”

“What's.... what's wrong Samantha?” She says, laying eyes on your crying RIO. Merlin just shakes her head, burying her face in Nick's side again.

Ice turns to you, worry etched on her features. “What's wrong with Samantha, Frank?”

“You nothing. If this is about what happened while you thought I was dead, you did what you had to. You probably did everything you could, and tried to arrange for what you couldn't do yourself to happen anyway, didn't you?” You say, heat creeping into your voice.

“Yeah, I thought so.” You sigh again. “Look, this isn't what we need to be doing. Merlin needs our help and we're trying to assign blame. It isn't helping.”

“Not happening, boss. First, look at her and tell me that's what she needs. Second, she and I are a team. She goes... I go.” You say, forcefully.

You look back over your shoulder at Merlin before responding.

“We let the squadron know when we get home. We explain it, and we trust them to help. We're family anyway, right?”

Ice chews in the inside of her cheek for a second before responding with a nod. “Alright. But!” She holds up a finger. “But if this starts to become a danger to us up there-”

You cut her off again. “It won't. If it does, I'll turn in my wings too.”

“I- yeah. Ok, Frank. I'll trust you.” Ice says, as much to herself as you. “I came down here because Nixon wants us up at Adak as soon as possible. You need to go up and shake the president's hand for a quick photo, then get yourself and Merlin to Langley. Sorry you won't have time to go see your grandfather's grave.”

You wave that last off. “I'm sure he doesn't mind. Granddad Eddie was really laid back.” You laugh at the sudden memory. “Always drove my mom nuts when we'd go see him- he'd give us all twenty bucks, a box of twenty-two rounds, a rifle, and a handful of hard candy and tell us to go have fun.”

She smiles. “Sounds like a real character. Still, get yourself and Samantha composed, upstairs, then to Langley.”

[x] "Merlin, I have to go, do you want to come with me and get your photo taken with the president or do you want to stay here with Ice and Mr. Mackintosh? Either option is fine."

“Merlin, I have to go up there.” You say, looking over at her. “Do you want to come with, or do you want to stay down here with Ice and Mr. Mackintosh? Either one is fine with me.”

Merlin looks up at you, her eyes watery and red. “I... I dunno.” she says, meekly. “I... I want to go with you, Frank.”

You nod, having expected that. “Ok, they dry them eyes. Gotta look our best!”

She smiles weakly, and suddenly hugs Nick, who looks confused for a second, then smiles himself and wraps one arm around her shoulder. Georgette hands her a small piece of paper. “That's our address and phone number, sweetie.” she says kindly. “If you want to call or write, feel free to, ok?”

Merlin nods up at the older witch. “T-thank you Mrs.Mackintosh...” she says, causing Georgette to giggle.

“Please, call me Georgette. I'm not that old!”

Merlin takes a few seconds to dry her eyes and wipe her nose- on a handkerchief, thank god. Nixon, waiting outside the door, ushers you up.

“Gotta hustle, kids.” He says to you and Merlin. “They need you back at Adak two hours ago. I knew this was a bad idea. I hope to hell we don't miss this window.”

Well, setting her up with someone is really not the way to go about this. Merlin's young, and losing someone as close to her as Fronk is a really scary thought. This is the sort of thing we just have to help her through, one day at a time. Look at Mack; the man's a total badass and he had to deal with it too.

Love the thought of getting the whole squadron in on it, though. Warm and fuzzy family vibes.

There is a reason why Georgette said Frank was Merlin's hero.

Of course certain people would have no trouble disregarding such logic if it involved a certain russian witch that upon Frank's absence, was hell bent on taking as many of her country men with her.

[x] “Window, sir?”

“Window, sir?” You ask, taking the stairs up just behind Merlin.

Nixon nods. “Intel finally pinned down that damned flying carrier- it's based in eastern Siberia. They've been using it to cover their supply line into Nome.” He stops, turning to look at you, grinning a predator's grin.

“We're going to lure it out, then hammer it. The Kitty Hawk and Montana are up there with their battle groups now. They've already claimed three or four transports, and intel thinks the reds have to respond now, if they don't want their boys in Alaska withering on the vine.”

“Is that where we come in, sir?” Merlin asks quietly.

Nixon nods. “Their air power in Alaska is depleted- they can't have that much left up there. That carrier is the only threat they've got left to us now. If we can kill it...”

You nod. “Then Alaska's as good as secure.”

You resume walking up the stairs as Nixon nods again. “Exactly. Not just Alaska, but the pipeline and the Canadian border- and Chandelier. We're not sure what they were doing up there, but Chandelier is the only thing we've got that matches Megalith. Arkbird isn't close, and even if it was, the Japs wouldn't agree with a wartime use of it.” He says.

You're hustled into the Blue room, where several photographers wait, along with the President, Katya, and your family.

The president, for an older guy, has a pretty powerful handshake. “Sorry about your medals, son.” He says quietly, as the cameras flash. “We would have given them to you tomorrow, but Dick says they need you right now. I'd go with, but my secret service folks wouldn't appreciate it too much. Stay safe up there.”

“Will do, sir.” You say, releasing his hand and resisting the urge to grin.

[x] Better hurry, every second counts!

As much as you hate to do it, you realize you don't have time for drawn-out goodbyes. Fact is, your jet's probably already fueled and sitting on the tarmac, waiting for you.

You do have time to say some fast goodbyes though- saluting your dad, then shaking his hand, and hugging your mom briefly- cameras be damned. Jessica manages to get in one of her rock-crushing hugs as well, causing you wheeze. When you hug her back and ruffle her hair.

Then you're out, hurried outside by a pair of presidential aides, finding a waiting staff car on the curb of Pennsylvania avenue. Inside, a young marine- in camoflague- sits in the driver's seat. He grins back at you as you climb inside behind Katya and Merlin.

“You in a hurry, folks?” He says, already knowing the answer. You nod.

“Good. Hold on to yer asses!” and he floors it, whipping the car through the quiet city at almost seventy miles an hour.

You burn through the city in relative silence, picking up the highway and accelerating to nearly a hundred and twenty miles an hour. “I'd go faster,” the young marine says “but these staff cars just don't have the motor for it! If we were in MY wheels I'd show y'all what speed is!”

Oddly, no police officers even blink as you scream by- pulling up to the gate of Langley in what you think surely must be a ground speed record for the run.

You're hustled to your bird's lonely hangar, where you find the ground crew swarming over it, pumping the last bits of fuel into it's tanks as the loadmaster for the nearby -141 oversees the final loading of a few pallets of supplies onboard his jet.

Your flight gear thumps into your arms- you catch the bag by reflex, snatching Merlin’s out of the air and handing it to her.

“Let's GO Frank.” Ice says from the starlifter's open cargo ramp.

[x] Change right the fuck there. We're apparently in too much of a hurry for modesty.

Modesty, apparently, is something that goes by the wayside when you're in a hurry- even if you've got the sickening feeling that this will end up being a classic case of hurry up and wait.

Still, it's a rare chance to mess with everyone around you for minimal effort.

You shrug, unbuttoning your dress jacket and removing your cover, dropping both on your bag. You're pretty sure you catch Ice staring briefly, and you know for a fact Katya was watching- then saw you look up, blushed, and turned away. Not that they could see anything anyway- you love your ranger panties to death, and were wearing a pair.

That and it's bleeding COLD outside.

Merlin, far more sensibly, changed in a corner of the C-141's cargo hold, and giggles at you while you try to warm up.

Things move quickly from there- as soon as you're strapped in, the -141 starts rolling, well before you've started your checklist. Still, other than a few hiccups, and one second where your nosewheel steering cuts out, you're ready to fly well inside the usual cold start time. It's been just over an hour since Ice found you in the White house library.

The winter night is relatively clear at altitude, with a few strands of cloud here and there, and one monster storm off to your northeast. The sky is bright an gorgeous, stars in their billions above you.

[x] “So Merlin, any idea what was on that cargo bird?”

You let a low whistle out. “Man, look at that sky. Gorgeous, isn't it?”

“Yeah.....” Merlin sounds awed.

“That's why I love this.” You say. “Not too many people get a view like ours, you know?”

She's quiet, and in the rear-facing mirror, you can see her head tilted back, looking up at the stars.

“So, any idea what was on that cargo bird?” You ask, looking over at the big shape off to your right.

“Oh! uh.. yeah!” Merlin says, snapped out of her reverie by your sudden question. “New strikers, it looked like. The new guns that we picked up in Aberdeen, a few crates of something else, but they were kinda small. Lots of supply pallets.”

“All for us?” You ask. For your unit, a full C-141's worth of supply is an awful lot, though you can see them not wanting to waste a half-filled cargo load.

“I'm not sure.” Merlin says. “It all looked like ours, but...”

“Oh well. No big either way.” You say, looking back up at the sky, catching the bright streak of a shooting star as it burns up on entry.

The flight is long and boring, but at least there's no stops- you're refueled in air about a hundred fifty miles northwest of Seattle, and your wheels finally kiss the runway at Adak a few hours later.

You're directed into your hangar, while the 141 is hurriedly unloaded, the supply pallets offloaded by forklift and moved into your hangar alongside your taxing fighter.

Ice and Katya are on the ground waiting as you stop your jet and shut down the engines.

“Ok, you three go on up to the house, get situated, find out what the deal is from Slider. And make sure our stuff gets unloaded correctly.” She says. “I'm going to run up to the intel shop and find out what's what, then see what the plan is.”

[] “Got it boss”
[] “Katya can handle that, let us tag along to the intel shop.”

If you Google the phrase it'll lead you to a few explanations. The short of it is that it's an old /v/ meme.

Also, the proper response is; "You’ve got to be kidding me. I’ve been further even more decided to use even go need to do look more as anyone can. Can you really be far even as decided half as much to use go wish for that? My guess is that when one really been far even as decided once to use even go want, it is then that he has really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like. It’s just common sense.”

[x] “Got it boss”

You shoot her a thumbs up. “Got it boss. We'll go see what kind of trouble they've been getting up to back home, you go do your thang.”

She quirks an Eyebrow. “My 'thang', Frank?”

You nod emphatically. “Yep. Your thang. Go on now!”

Ice just laughs and walks out of the hangar, headed towards the support offices.

The ground crews unload the C-141 in a hurry, finally dropping the last of the striker frames in place on the hangar floor. The striker tech crews are already swarming over the new units, poking and prodding and making impressed sounds. Katya, standing next to you, laughs.

“They are all the same.” She says, amused. “All Striker crews are. They all get excited over the latest model, as if it is beautiful woman!”

Merlin taps your arm, getting your attention. “should... should we go see what they've done while we were gone?”

[] “Should be interesting, yeah.”

[x] “Should be interesting, yeah.”

“Should be interesting. Slider can't have let them run too wild.” You say, grabbing your bag and heading up the walk towards the house.

Inside, the front desk is unoccupied- no surprise there, since you don't have the available bodies to staff it. But it's blazing hot, compared to the outside air- Merlin's glasses fog up, going totally opaque, and you can't help but chuckle at it. Still, it's got to be in the mid-80s in the house, which means they've got the heat cranked WAY up.

“Somehow,” Katya says, warily. “This worries me. They are up to something.”

“We're back ahead of schedule” Merlin points out, cleaning her glasses with a rag. “They don't think we're supposed to be home for another day or two, I bet.”

Upstairs, you hear the thudding of rapid footfalls, squeals, and some laughter.

“I... do not know if I wish to find out what they are doing.” Katya says, carefully. “I think I will be in my room.”

Merlin, meanwhile, is looking up at you again. “Ice did say we should see what they were up to....” she says.

[x] “You're right, she did. Let's go find out.”

You sigh. “You're right, Merlin. She did. Let's go find out what they're up to.”

the house is almost oppressively hot, though, thankfully, surprisingly dry. The HVAC guys did outstanding work, really, and the heater dehumidifies the air which, given the oceanfront nature of the base, is a godsend.

Downstairs, the dining faculty is a wreck- tables overtrurned, chairs strewn everywhere. The potted plants are still there, surprisingly, though one of the pictures hanging on the wall has been knocked down and sits on the floor. Upstairs, the thudding footsteps recede, headed down one of the office halls.

“It looks like a bomb went off in here!” Merlin exclaims.

There's nothing broken, thankfully, and the kitchen itself looks mostly intact, if slightly messier than when you left it.

In the upstairs lounge, there's tarps draped over most of the furniture, and several large wet spots on the floor.

“What.... what are they doing?” Merlin wonders out loud, looking around the room in awe at the mess.

Behind you, you can hear the running girls approaching again. You turn slowly to face to door to the office wing, and are rewarded when Maverick, clad in a red bikini and carrying a super soaker, screeches to a halt in the entryway, looking at you and Merlin with utter shock on her face.

[] “Red? Very nice. Also, since when did you have tattoos?”

[x] “Red? Very nice. Also, since when did you have tattoos?”

You quickly drop your hands over Merlin's eyes and wiggle your eyebrows at Maverick, who's busily turning the most amusing shade of crimson.

“Red? Very nice. And since when did you have Tattoos?” You ask, indicating the inkwork on her right side. Looks like... vines? With thorns and flowers?

“Since forever.” She responds, leveling her squirt gun at you and pulling the trigger. A feeble spurt of water escapes, but nothing else. “Fuck.” She says, defeated.

“Fraaaank!” Merlin protests, pulling at your wrists. “I'm not a little kid!”

“Hey, speaking of kids. That reminds me.” You say, snapping your fingers and pointing at Maverick. “The boss is down in the intel shack, and I don't know how long it'll be before she's here.”

You make a point of looking around the lounge. “You might, uh, you might want to clean this up.”

“Nah,” Slider says, emerging from behind Maverick. “We'll just drag her into it anyway.”

“Uh-huh.” You say, edging yourself between them and Merlin.

“So, what's this thing with the soviet flying carrier, anyway?” You ask. “They rushed us here to shoot it down, what's the deal?”

Slider shrugs, keeping her own squirt gun leveled at you. “Whole base is on short notice, so five minute alert for everyone, pretty much.”

“Oh, that's just wonderful. You'll have time to change if we're called up?” You ask, indicating her black Bikini. “I can't imagine that's warm.”

Slider shrugs again. “You'd be surprised. Besides, magic.”

“Right.” you say, slowly edging towards the stairs, Merlin matching your movement.

[x] Flee now!

You sense your opening. It's not going to last long, but it should be enough to get out, you think.

Grabbing Merlin, you rush down the steps, racing to keep your feet in front of your center of gravity as you flee from your bikini clad squadronmates' super soaker wrath. You clear the stairwell with no problem, yelling “WHOOP WHOOP” back over your shoulder as you run.

You screech to a halt when Goose, Wearing a grey one piece bathing suit, turns the corner between you and the bedroom halls.

“They said wait for you down here.” She drawls lazily, a catlike grin on her face. “They also said you'd try and talk your way out of it. Back up the stairs with you, then.”

[] “Fine, but Merlin goes free.”
[] She's 15! how fast can she be? You can get away, no problem!

Where's Katya when she's needed? Though there's the possibility she might just join in.

Also I don't think Goose would be too fast, she's a heal witch, not the second coming of Yeagertits

[x] Pick up Goose and leg it.

You almost feel bad for Goose. Almost.

After all, they dispatched her alone to handle you, without properly briefing her on the challenges that entailed. Merlin, riding high on your shoulders, is well aware of it however- as is evidenced by her suddenly tightened grip. She knows you're up to something.

Squirt guns have a funny way of acting like the real thing- that is, they can only point in one place at a time. The trick is just not being in the exact place they're pointing, and you're golden.

You're also lucky that you played football with your brothers. While you were never anywhere near as built as they were, you learned how to be fast on your feet and faster with your reflexes if you didn't want to get mauled. It's served you well so far, you think.

“Well? Get moving!” Goose demands, gesturing with her super soaker. Wrong move. The second the barrel twitches, you explode into action, leaping forward and getting one hand on the barrel of her squirt gun, pushing it away while you lean in and scoop the small witch up under your other arm.

“H-Hey! Put me down! Hey!” She squeals, flailing ineffectively. Even her magic doesn't help much, though it does provide a distracting blue glow.

We're at 450+ replies guys, I think after this one it's either bed or a new thread time!

[] What now, Frank? (Drop Goose off with Katya)

You run down the bedroom hall quickly, ignoring Goose's protests the entire time. Merlin, armed with the squirt gun, pivots warily around, like a ball turret, alert for any further ambushes. You're pretty sure they're still upstairs, waiting for Goose to march you up, but you can't be too careful.

Stopping in front of Katya's open door, you use your free hand to knock on the wall before stepping inside. Katya looks up from her book as you do.

“Hi Katya! I got you an American. I hope they're in season!” You say, depositing Goose at the end of Katya's bed.

Katya grins at you. “I hope they are as well.”

“Uh.... right. Oh, hey, heads up for Slider and Maverick, they're still around here... somewhere.” You say.

“Thank you for the warning, Frank.” Katya says, laughing. “Goose and I will find something to do in the mean time. Perhaps chess?”

Goose makes a face. “I don't really like chess. I could show you how to make those brownies I was talking about. Or that noodle soup you liked.”

Katya nods, closing her book. “That sounds good! Let us do that, then.”

Goose smiles. “Let me go change. I'll be right back, ok?”

“You could always join us, Frank and Merlin.” Katya says. “We would like the company.”

[] “I'd like to, but no one is safe while those two are about.”
[] “Sounds like a plan! Ice will straighten them out.”

Best way to shut Mav down is to not play her game.
Plus it's a chance to spend time with Goose.
