Lights, brighter then anything i've ever seen before float around me.
I reach out to try and touch them, just as my hand reaches one of the lights i hear a voice
"..." "...ain?" "..ake captain?", the voice sounds vaguely familiar.
"Captain wake up!" i'm awoken from my slumber, as i open my eyes i see a woman in armour standing infront of my desk.

"Sorry about that lieutenant, all this extra work coming in has me run ragged"

She looks empathetic to my situation. "I can hardly blame you, we're quite undermanned as of lately."

I cringe a little, We lost a lot of good men recently. Partly due to a bandit hideout we cleared out in the east end of the city and partly due to the plague.

Our recruitment drives could also use a bit of work but damnit i'm a guardsman not some bard in a tavern weaving silly tales!

I sigh as i look to the lieutenant, "Williams if you have any idea as to how we sort out the problem i'm open to any suggestion"

She laughs a little and shakes her head. "I haven't the faintest clue sir, Maybe you could ask around the barracks?"

It was a good idea, i could ask around or atleast have Williams look into it.
>Go ask for ideas on how to improve recruitment drive
>Ask Williams to do it for me and get some paperwork done
>Ask Williams to do it for me and head home, god knows i could use the sleep and some time off from the monster known as paperwork

>go ask for ideas on how to improve recruitment drive

Are we the only authority in the city?
>>
>>22489606
The city is split into four factions of power.

The nobles, the union of trade, the city guard (you) and the church.

Relations between the city guard and the church is strained at best and outright hostile at worst, you tend to get along fine with the nobles as you protect their city. You are neutral towards the union of trade but suspicious of their activities.
>>
>>22489667
interesting. Who controls the justice system, and is there anyone like a duke or figurehead who runs the city?
>>
>>22489667
What's strained the relations between the Church and the Guard?
Is it the Church protecting their own from prosecution even though they've committed crimes?
>>
>Go ask for ideas
>>
>>22489712
Usually the city guard is judge jury and executioner however crimes of extreme magnitude gets taken to the nobles for counciling on a fitting punishment, the figurehead would have to be the duke of jorrun (your city)
>>
> Anon, now for identity purposes namefag

I'm thinking of building up the guard in power and influence, then accuse the church of tax avoidance or something, swooping in and arresting the leaders and seizing assets.

Cold you list the size of all the respective factions in terms of political power and manpower?
>>

>Go ask for ideas on how to improve recruitment drive

"I think i'll go do that Williams, wrap up the last batches of crime reports lieutenant"

As i walk past her she gives me a small salute, Good woman that Williams.

As i walk to the barracks i start to hear the recruits laughing at something, probably the latest dirty joke thats running around the taverns.

I enter the barracks and see five recruits playing cards waiting for their shift, they seem to be betting various nicknacks they've made in their spare time.

"I hope i'm not interrupting anything important, but i could use a bit of help" i joke as they turn their heads.
"not at all captain just passing time, what do you need help with?"

>what do? i'll be going with general consensus
>>
>>22489809
in terms of political power? the nobles are at the top, the city guard holds quite some pull due to your relations with the nobles, the church comes in third and they're none to happy that the nobles confer to rather then their spiritual leaders. The union holds little to no sway

in terms of manpower? the church and the union are at the top, the union due to mercs and the church due to their network in the lands and the templars. The city guard comes in third and the dukes knights would be the final and smallest in terms of manpower

>>
>>22489856

Well as you may know we are running low on recruits, so iw as wondering if you had any ideas to bring in more people?
>>
>>22489948
The recruits look at each other and then back at you, "Well captain you could go talk with the trade union and see if you can't get them to run a recruitment campaign for you, i bet if you give them five percent of our yearly fundings they'll do it for us"
another recruit pipes up.
"sir you could also plead your case with the nobles, i mean you have quite some pull with the knights court maybe they could put the words out to the peasants that the city guard needs strong capable people?"

both sound like good suggestions, however it might be best only going with one or the other.

>Go with the merchants union?
>Go with asking the knights court to send a message out to the peasants of the land that theres work for them in the city guard?
>Mull it over at home before i go to sleep?

>>
>>22490090
I decide to go with the nobles, peasants tend to be more reliable then mercs anyway. Especially when money is involved, i should probably write up the letter and have it delivered tomorrow via a messenger.

I decide to head home, however theres a nagging feeling that hounds the back of my head. I can't quite remember what though.

>Open the door and ask why the male is at my house

I open the door and immedietly the conversation stops, behind a nun is a little child around the age of 4 crying into the nuns skirt. Infront of them is a tall fat man whom i can only assume is the owner of the heavy accent (think slavic accent).

"Whats going on here?" i ask while looking at the man.

"that little witch behind the nun stole three apples from my cart! I demand recompensation for the thievery AND punishment for that little imp!" he fumes and spits out, quite clearly unhappy. I look over to the nun "is this true?" she shakes her head, "that's not what she shared with me, apparently the apples fell out of the cart and she picked them up and apparently when she tried to give them back to the merchant he accused her of thievery and here we are"

oh dear, seems like my little Tira has gotten herself into trouble again.

>investigate further by asking my daughter if her story is true, surely she wouldn't lie to her father?

"S-surely you can't believe a small child over an honest merchant!" I briefly entertain the notion of throwing him into the cells in block C with all the murders and rapists but cast it aside for now.

"I will believe my daughter over a merchant any day because i know her and she does not have a dishonest bone in her body, and you'd do well to remember that in this city. She smiles and leaps into my arms "Papa! Thank you for dealing with the bad man, he was an ars-as-not nice!" I laugh at her silly attempt at cursing, apparently she's been hanging around the barracks again. "You did the right thing today Tira, and for that your birthday present is you get to do or have whatever you want."

Her eyes light up with excitement as the little cogs in her head turns trying to think of what she wants, finally she settles on something.

"Papa, i want mama back!" Oh dear, i was afraid she might ask us this. Tira is too young to remember but her mother passed away shortly before her second birthday, but how do you explain to a child who has no concept of life and death that their mother is gone?

Tira smiles at this "then, can you teach me how to be like papa? How to fight with a sword and take down bad people?"

"right Tira, keep your feet slightly apart like this. Now swing the spoon slowly and test its weight." an hour goes by and Tira is having the time of her life, the makeshift casserole helmet which is too big for her head slightly covers her eyes.

"papa, when I grow up I want to be a captain of the guard just like you!" I let out a small chuckle "not with that footwork of yours you won't, now put the "sword" back with the casserole. It's bedtime for the both of us." She yawns and slowly wobbles over to the kitchen counter and puts everything back in its right place, afterwards we proceed up to my bed where I tuck her in next to her.

"Sweet dreams Tira" she sleepily replies "you too papa" as she snuggles up next to me with her little teddy bear. A few minutes pass before sleep takes me, i wonder what the world of dreams has in store for me?

Codex entry #5
Jocelyn Tira's mother - deceased

History
"What could i say about my wife? Average looking, horrible at housework and has a downright mean aim with cutlery. But i love her nontheless" - Varnus when asked about his wife without him knowing she was behind him.

Jocelyn was a humble herbalist in the city of jorrun, her kindness was what drew her husband Varnus to her.
Not much is known of her past but she was well liked by the orphans and the poor of the city, Selfless and giving would be the words to best describe her.
She and Varnus met at the city barracks after he was stabbed with a poisoned dagger during a particularily violent raid on a slave ring.
She passed away little under two years after she gave birth to her daughter Tira due to uncertain circumstances.

Codex entry #4
Captain Varnus

History - Captain Varnus Corr started out as a farmer in the outskirts of Jorrun, had a stable upbringing with a good sense of right and wrong. He signed up with the guard after he read they needed more capable men and women protecting the city of jorrun and her citizens, his charismatic and brave attitude quickly moved him up in the ranks of the guard. Has a daughter at the age of four named Tira whom he loves dearly and would go to any lengths to protect, he misses her mother greatly as she was taken from them early due to sickness, he suspected foul play from the church as Tira's mother was a well-known herbalist and healer but he never could prove anything significant. As such he dislikes the church.

Tira comes back with a confused look on her face "Papa there's a man at the door, he says it's important" What could be important this early in the day?

I get up and tuck the letter into the pouch on my hip and walk out to see who it is.

In the doorway stands a man of average height clad in the city guard armoured uniform, slightly panting as if hes run the whole way here.

"Corporal what brings you to my home this early in the morning?" he looks up at me "we have a priority one case back at HQ you better come with" priority one? That's usually saved for cases where nobles are involved. "Right let me just finish up quickly"

I go back into the kitchen and hug Tira "you remember what i told you right? don't let anyone in unless its sister Catherine, she'll be over when the bell rings eight." she nods and as i turn around i hear her say "i love you papa, come back soon okay?" i put my hand up in a mock salute with my back turned to her "doesn't your father always come back from work little one?" i don't quite hear her response as i hurry out and hear the door lock behind me, we rush towards HQ and i can't help but wonder. I ignore the letter for now, can't have it impairing my judgement.

As we reach HQ i see a patrol unit of 6 guardsmen and i can guess the corporal was leading it, they look slightly nervous. "Whats the situation?" i ask as i look at them "Well, we have a slight problem which needs to be handled delicately." delicately? and they ask me? oh all th-no not the correct line of thinking here, "Go on"

one of the recruits shuffle nervously "well it appears one of the nobles got hammered down by the barrel yesterday, and we mean Grade A plastered. After which he thought it would be a good idea to *ahem* "Accost" the emissary from Qo'Pral who was brokering an alliance with our city" I put my head in my hand, feeling a headache coming about

"right and let me guess, this so called "accosting" has either A. Gotten her violated or B. Gotten her killed or even option C. Both" the entire patrol cringes at my less then subtle way of guessing her fate "something like that, we have multiple eye witnesses that can attest to the noble performing the crime but they wish to remain anonymous." Great it's just one thing after another? Now how do i handle this?
>Avoid major diplomatic incident by handing over said noble to the city state of Qo'Pral

I should probably get the victims side of the story, the witnesses could have missed something after all.

As i get closer the ambassador looks up, clearly frightened out of her wits. Poor thing, the elves of Qo'Pral aren't used to human crimes so she probably doesn't even know how to react.

"Ma'am, i'm sorry this has happened to you. But we need to get your side of the story" a gentle tone is what's needed here, she looks up shivering and teary eyed "why, why did he do what he did?"

"That's what I'm trying to find out, ma'am.
"Now, can you tell me where you were and what you were doing when the incident happened?"

"That's what i'm trying to find out ma'am, now can you tell me where you were and what you were doing when the incident happened?" i ask with a soft expression on my face, she turns her eyes to the floor. "I-I got invited out for drinks with a few of the diplomats and nobles that i met while discussing a potential alliance between Jorrun and Qo'Pral, After a few drinks some of the disappeared for a few moments then came back with an angered expression on their faces. Next thing i know i'm being dragged out into the alleyway but a noble saying something about witches and elves, he started hurting me while holding his hand over my mouth so i couldn't call out for help. Guess he didn't expect me to b-bite his hand did he?" she shivers as she relives the experience.

wait did she say something about witches? but i thought the nobles approved of magic. "Williams i've got some things to sort out, once you're done with the ambassador go check the perp for bitemarks." she nods as i head out, why would the nobles disapprove of magic? it makes no sense! the dukes little brother is a magi and the head of the knights court also practices magic.

Our rolls have not been that good in this quest.
>>

My brain goes into overdrive, first i have to divide this up.

Ambassador brokering alliance gets attacked, why? Jorrun has been looking for allies in case of war for years would counter productive, motive? sow discord?

second, noble assumed to have hatred for magic. Why? makes no sense, nobles see the use of magic. Have approved many magi into their court, many practice magic. No logical connections

third, what is there to be gained from potential war? profit for the merchants union? no no raids on caravans and potential sabotage of suppliers would cause loss and not profit. Potential crusade? church advocates peace even for magic users, still makes no sen-unless. Of course, church gets noble drunk convinces him magic is evil. Add a bit of persuasion and charisma, then after ambassador is attacked send her home, assume she explains story to the Qo'Pral elder council. What then? outbreak of war Qo'Pral is the biggest hub of magic practice and teaching, crusade would be beneficial to church. War would propogate civilian hate towards elves. Implications, unpleasant.

>what do we do with our conclusions? keep them to ourselves or share with the rest of the guard?

Nothing for now. We have no evidence. Without evidence, we have no case.

We need evidence before we can act. And confessions and testimonies.

Let's interrogate the suspect.
>>
>>22495293
I shake my head, should get some hard evidence first to support my case.

Time to interrogate the suspect, now this is going to be less then pleasant.

"Captain Varnus, good you're here. Listen how much is it going to cost me to get out of here? I heard you're in good with the other nobles"

did he just try to bribe me?

>Good Guard approach, try to use my natural charisma to coax info out of him (DC15)
>Bad Guard approach, threaten him to spill everything he knows or even his next of kin won't be able to recognize the remains through magic. (DC15 if success +1 corruption)
>Intimidating presence bonus approach: In this city i AM the law, best remind him of this and why its generally a bad idea to try and bribe his way out of this one. (Freeform questioning)
>>
>>22495431
>I AM THE LAW
"I will interpret your question as asking about the going rate of a good lawyer, to which I can refer you to a number of reputable solicitors to take up your defense. Since the other way to take that question is that you were attempting to bribe me, an officer of the Law.
"Now. Where were you and what were you doing last night?"
>>
>>22495431
"Tell me, my lord. Have you heard of what happened to rapists in Qo'Pral? They're genitalia is removed with a hot iron, and they are sent to work as whores for people with unique tastes. Now, if you assume that the law in this city is so weak that you can buy your way out of it, perhaps the courts of Qo'Pral would suit you better?"

>Nobles pants status: BRICKS OF COSMIC SIZE HAS BEEN SHAT

He spills everything to me, from when he stepped out from the tavern to when he met a cloaked individual who somehow convinced him it would be a good idea to attack the ambassador, I mull everything he says over in my head. I turn around and head towards the door, as i open it i see Williams "you done with the perp captain?" I nod "yeah, getting out of here because i can stand the smell" she gives me a salute as i continue towards my office. This confirms a lot of things, but nothing solid just yet. However it does mean we can avoid a major diplomatic incident by handing over the noble in question.

>trait upgrade: intimidating presence can now be turned into Terrifying Aura, which helps in future situations where a check has to be made
>>
>>22496444
on that note, its bedtime for OP. i've got work in about 6 hours and some sleep would be lovely
>>
>>22496444
We can't rule out noble backstabbing and shenanigans, since a rival of the suspect could have been trying to discredit him.

Is there any way to get forensic magic evidence, proving that the suspect had been coerced?
>>
>>22496547
i'll make some notes for this when i'm running the quest again.
>>
>>22496547
I thing it's all the machinations of the Church. We should start building up connections and raise our forces, and then, if we can link this event to them, roll in and arrest everyone.
>>
anyone mind archiving this for future use?
>>
>>22496702
Archiving completed.
I put this down as City Guardsman Quest, because there's already a Guardsman Quest about the Imperial Guard.
