You are Michael Clairmont, Ex-Alliance Sentinel, madman, and one of the butchers of Torfan, this is your story.

lets take that base have Oolot and Luke open the doors with a well placed missile then charge
>>
>>22528617

The sounds of gunfire disappear into the distance as you make your way deeper into the lush garden worlds interior, you're within the shadow of the mountain now, the setting sun hanging too low in the sky.

You notice the curt nods and glances the rest of Brigg's squad keep throwing your direction, the man himself could seem to care less about your presence now, likely finding comfort you've seen what your employers are really into and have lost interest in continuing along that path, at least for the moment.

I wouldn't go so far as to call us a "madman". We're just slightly unstable and have multiple personalities only one of which is genuinely crazy. Arrr!

I suppose there's that batarian thing as well... let's hope our new friend doesn't have any batarians in his entourage.
>>
>>22528704

Briggs is leading you guys away from assaulting the other base since it was in the midst of tearing itself apart, why not let them kill each other and sort out the survivors only if you must?
>>
>>22528733

Why are they killing each other though?

At any rate, fair enough I suppose. I'm curious myself what cerberus has unearthed.
>>
>>22528716

You notice one of Brigg's soldiers if carrying a small pack covered in radiation symbols. Portable Tac-Nuke meant to be placed like a satchel charge.

You note the squad is Briggs plus four, all wearing helmets and some rather high grade Alliance gear, one curiosity, for their unit they have what appears to the face of a panther. Despite your time in the Alliance you're not familiar with any unit that uses that symbol.

>>22528721
None have the correct armor pattern to have 4 eyes. If they are here they are likely extremely uncomfortable and possibly brain damaged from having their massive domes crammed into a human helmet.
>>
>>22528775

Don't know, they just appear to have gone insane, Briggs may know more than he's telling, his men seemed spooked but it mostly warranted a shrug from him.

You're closing on the mine now, it's sundown now, you can tell from the bit of horizon you can see still peering from over the mountain top.

Briggs signals his men to go covert and they drop into a crouch and start trying to make as little noise as possible.

Also perhaps inquire over comm how far from the mountain can Switch land should we need rapid extraction from an armed nuke.

You don't know what is in this place yet, stealth could assist with acquiring a better tactical position before coming under fire, but charging in also gives the advantage of shock since it's unexpected.

"Eh, you know how it goes, they're not much on talking and people wearing helmets seem to discourage conversation a bit. Does make it easier to give orders though, people fear what they don't know. It's a psychology thing...", Briggs replies, "Don't wear one myself normally but something is up with the atmosphere, I wouldn't wanna risk prolonged exposure, I only did before because suit was showing all clear and well...I wanted some fresh air." he laughs

"Wearing a helmet isn't all good, it makes people more likely to shoot you since you're faceless." chimes one of his soldiers.

"Yeah, yeah, you're just mad you can't woo the Drell without being able to show your smile Watkins!" Briggs replies, Watkins gives a slight thumbs up before holding up the bush for Sel to pass.

"After you ma'am" he says

You call Switch who lets you know he'll do his best but it may be best to let the Alliance worry about extraction, their shuttle is likely faster and more maneuverable than the I<3Ponies!
>>
>>22528875
>>22528879

You signal for Oolot and Sel to follow suit and you reach a clearing, there are a couple large buildings here along with a small mine entrance tore into the side of the mountain. No detectable movement, Briggs waves Watkins and another soldier to breach the left single story building while he and the rest of his team move to the right to clear a larger 3 story complex.
The bottom portion of the structure appears to be a garage for maintenance of the equipment, the middle portion and upper portion more than likely housing and administration.

The building on the left gives off a supply shed kind of feel.

You send the squad to breach the shed and stack up with Briggs and his two selected team members.

You can't help but think how stacking up like this reminds you of the good times in the Alliance back when things were more straightforward. It's relieving in a way...

Briggs takes point and blows the door with a biotic blast. You charge into the first floor, there is an armored APC in here along with a large construction mech but the place is otherwise deserted, no sign of motion.

Research logs date back 4 years.
You realize it was ExoGeni who originally located the planet, but they never presented it as a colonization candidate, strange even given the bizarre atmospheric readings this planet should have at least be brought to the Alliance, if not the Council's attention.

Reading on you realize the found the remains of an ancient spacefaring civilization on-world. Predating the Protheans by a large margin.

Interesting, and very, very illegal. Any discoveries like that are to be reported immediately to the galactic community at large. Playing fast and loose.

It goes on to detail them sending the research team who set up base here, they detected strange readings from underneath this mountain, specifically like a large Eezo reserve.

Ah, that explains the mining equipment, they could pay for any research based on the amount of Eezo they would find and still make a profit while further their own goals. Not bad...

Gets pretty boring from there, names and fancy degrees all dickwaving over who and what lived here.

The most viewed articles seem to come in when they started closing on the Eezo deposits.

They found catacombs.

"Data corruption detected" the computer alerts you.

You find a couple of tablets, one mostly full of porn with the occasional research note. The other, is a bit more interesting.

Private journal, for some reason no one was sleeping well. They kept waking up with night terrors, they attributed it all to jungle fever more or less. But then it starts getting weird. One entry in particular.

"Dr. Allen was telling me about his little girl Alicia today and how she has the most beautiful brown eyes and just took her first steps before he left. I think I'm losing my mind because that is MY daughter's name and she just walked before I came out here. How is that possible? Do I just want to go home that badly that I dreamed it? When I questioned him about it he swore to me it was the truth and we even remembered the same details! Something is wrong here, we need to get the hell off this planet. I don't know what ExoGeni is hoping to find but it's not worth it. Just last week we found our mechanic sitting outside staring at the cave entrance mumbling to himself and when someone approached him he attacked them with a wrench! I'm going to alert ExoGeni first thing in the morning once we get the Comm Relay back online, damn this planet's rainstorms.

Following him you begin to look through the entries.

They're still a mess but you can see Switch did what he could.

They broke through into the catacombs 3 months ago and it started to go downhill from there, the data entries become more sporadic and bizarre. Eventually they're not even in a language you understand anymore.

The research team and miners began disappearing for days at a time and then would show up, perfectly fine not having noted they'd been gone for more than a few hours at most.

The lead researcher ordered the mine sealed and many of the team members tried to talk him down, telling him they had so much to learn from this world. When he asserted his authority all hell broke loose that much is clear. There's not security footage but you can see the end results. You're not sure where everyone is now but all signs point to this mine and whatever lays within.

"They can't take off their helmets in this atmosphere, there is a much higher concentration of, whatever it is in here then there is out there. Dammit, why did Geronimo have to order the max polarized shit, I can't see a fucking thing in those helmets. In addition their helmet comm suites are apparently off-line. FUCK FUCK FUCK. "Well they can't talk, we can't see their faces, and none of them are willing to give up the other. Although then again, the two survivors probably really don't know who's who. Maybe we could hack the magnetic locks on their helmets? Did they have any identifiers that couldn't be copied? Codes, name tags? Anything that it would be impossible for a doppleganger to know? We could always take them with us up to the surface, and then force the helmets off."
