Let's get this shit started, Anon.

Your flight to the Riyadh Air Base just outside of Saudi Arabia's capitol didn't take nearly as long as you thought it would. Then again, most of your time was spent in an in flight briefing or reading pamphlets on Saudi culture, what you can and cannot do, and what they'll happily throw you into a dank pit for doing. To put it in broad terms, the Saudi's seem to hate fun.

You were met by a striking young witch with a security detail almost the size of your company, well cut men in thwabs with bandoleers crossing x's on their chests. If it came down to a fight between you and them, your bets would go fully on you. These guys look like they've seen too many action movies to be an effective fighting force, but mom always did say to never judge a book by it's cover.

Speaking of, the witch who you ran into introduced herself as Princess-Lieutenant Fatima Tahira of the Royal Saudi Land Forces. You've taken to just calling her 'pe-ell', if for no other reason that it's easier to remember and not nearly the mouthful her full formal name is. She somehow corralled the fifteen tankers, twelve former special forces infantrymen-turned-armored-infantrymen, and five witches now onto the apron and explained everything that you all saw and read in the briefing and pamphlets. Again.

1/3
>>
The gates leading to the billet you've been posted are guarded by a pair of pristine looking, idly running M60A3's, which were both sans crews. The Saudi tankers were all outside of their running vehicles, playing cards and smoking with the policemen who were manning the guard post. They all managed to stiffen into very sloppy positions of attention for the Princess-Lieutenant, but only sneered at 1ARSOF and it's gear.

Speaking of, your vehicles, strikers, and other equipment have almost all undergone complete paint scheme overhauls, save for Siegel's pitch black striker. Booze hound is now in full desert tan, though Nicky's kill markers weren't painted over. It's new armor suite, while almost a completely bolt-on job, looks organic enough to the vehicle itself to not draw enough, if any, attention to your tank.

The billet itself then, is almost wholly open. On the outside, the rather large, boxy two story building looked almost like your old unit's barrack's buildings. It has a roof and an open central courtyard area complete with plastic yard furniture, though that's about where the simularities end. Your 'rec room' looks like a set of looters just made off with everything worth a penny, and your 'kitchen' hasn't been cleaned in what looks like over two years of use. The latrines are in worse condition, which made you fear for the bed rooms. Those were intact, though they were all sans beds or any variety of furniture.

2/3
>>
Oh, and your training of the RSLF's armored elements begins in two days, enough time to clean this dump and make it livable and go over your gear..if you don't sleep. Things just keep getting better and better.

It's a shitty situation, on the whole, but you signed up for it.

>[] Go over your equipment!

You call Lieutenant Anderson and Nicky over.

“Alright gentlemen, first thing's first. Grab your boys and your gear, start going through it and making sure it works. We'll get around to fixing this dump up in a little bit, but we can't teach nobody nothin' til we know our stuff is all here and in one piece.”

Nicky nods before running to gather the company. You can hear the groans of your tankers who want nothing more to crank the non-existant AC up and go to sleep on their equally non-existant mattresses, but now have to go over their vehicles or rifles. You hear Rockfield shout something at young Nicholas, him profusely apologize, and his sprinting footsteps away from wherever she was. You can't help but smile. What else is there for a 19 year old Abrams gunner to do in a foreign country than get in trouble?

Anderson rubs his stubble thoughtfully, as though he misses his beard. “We personally loaded our stuff, sir. After checking if it's broken, which it probably isn't, I was thinking of taking some people into the city and getting some stuff we'll need. Of course, after accosting General Garrison for an IMPAC card. Wouldn't want to give away our own hard earned money. Cool with you?”

>[] “Yep. Here's a list of what we'll need/want. Make sure you talk to the sparklies, don't want them left out.”

You nod while walking towards the door and your very impromptu motor pool. “Go for it, especially if you can get your hands on that delicious IMPAC card. Just make sure you get stuff that everybody needs, including our witches. Yeah? See if you can grab some grub, too. I'm tired of DFAC chow.”

You both make it out to the 'motor pool', where your tankers are running standard checks on their armor. Nicky, predictably, is busy boresighting the Booze Hound's main gun. He doesn't really ever do anything else when you're going over the tank, his job of course being to make sure that when he pulls the trigger, whatever's on the other side dies, and dies a lot.

“Hey el-tee, any chance you can grab something with a cover on it? Like a pop up cover they use at tailgating parties?” You ask, watching your tankers sweat profusely under the brutal sun. It may only be seventy degrees Fahrenheit out, but under the direct sun, and being used to the fairer German weather, it feels like you're in a broiler. Well, there's all that and that Garrison has ordered that if you're not inside your building, that you be in your armor.

Anderson chuckles. “You got it Sir. Anything else?”

You shrug.

“Eh, just common sense stuff. Sunblock, Sunglasses, et cetera. Beds. And see what you can do about some pallets of water, I don't trust the tap here.”

“Good call, sir. Probably ought to talk to the company about that.” Anderson replies, scribbling onto his notepad. “I'm going to go talk to my guys, then the sparklies. I'll see what I can do about some entertainment, too, that rec room is looking pretty destitute.”

With that, he walks back inside. You, on the other hand, mosey over to the Booze Hound. Nicky is still boresighting, though that doesn't surprise you, as Michael and Hans run over the full warm-up checklist. The batteries are currently trickling life into the starter motor, not too much unlike a diesel. A diesel that runs on jet fuel.

The three of them are working like a well practiced ballet, which isn't too far from the truth. You can't help but feel like you're getting in the way. Every other tank crew is doing about as well, albeit a little slower. Being the firm believer of lead by example that you are, you would have your tank crew awake and running checks at every opportunity. The other tank commanders quickly followed after you won six competitions in a row.

“Um, captain?” You recognize Ooishi's voice behind you.

[] “What's up, corporal?”

You turn around, finding yourself staring into the face of a very dirty looking Ooishi. What looks like grease is smudged all over her face and her hands. In fact, the only clean part about her are her legs, somehow.

“What's up, devil dog?” You ask, taking a step back. Growing up with a little sister taught you that not only are women evil, but they'll make you just as miserable and or messy as they are with zero warning.

“Any chance you happen to know if we have striker techs on the way? You know that our company doesn't have any, and something's wrong with Patterson's. It's giving her some trouble on acceleration, and the motor is being incredibly loud.” She says, rubbing some of the grease on the front of her uniform.

Actually, you have no idea. There should be striker techs embedded in your unit, and there were some slated to be eventually, but you were shuffled around so fast from Germany to France to the kingdom that even your mail is having trouble catching up to you. Hopefully, though, they're on the way. Duct tape and spit only goes so far in repairing delicate magitech gear.

[] “I'll have Siegel take a look at it. She at least has a basic knowledge of strikers.”
[] “I'll go have a talk with Garrison. He'll be able to tell me what's up.”

>[] “I'll go have a talk with Garrison. He'll be able to tell me what's up.”

“Hell if I know what's wrong with it,” you start, shrugging. Seems you've been doing a lot of that lately. “I can say though, that I'll go have a word with General Garrison and see what's what. Hopefully he's got striker techs on the way.”

Ooishi nods. “Good thing, too. I've got a few linkage problems in the tracks. Nothing I can't fix myself, but normally those don't go out on their own, usually something has to vibrate them out. Dunno what that could be. I'm just glad I can work on Muramasa by myself.” She smiles, gesturing to her rifle.

“You named your rifle after a Muromachi period swordsmith?” You find yourself asking. You probably shouldn't really judge, your tank is named Booze Hound.

She just nods and replies “Masamune was a punk. Wait, you know about Japanese swordsmithing?”

You're already walking away, so you just shout over your shoulder, “You know, I AM college educated!” though you can hear the snickers of your own tank crew behind you. Knowing it's all in good fun, you ignore them.

It's a short walk to Garrison's CP, not taking you longer than ten minutes across a few empty streets. Everyone in the compound seems to be busy either cleaning or going through their gear, just as your own company is. The Foreign Legion has it's younger enlisted doing calisthenics in their courtyard, while the Royal Marines Commando seem to be focusing on making sure their weapons are clean.

>>
>>22553551

The CP itself isn't different at all than your building, though a little smaller. It's almost like it was tailor made for the purpose, though that'd be kinda hard given that you're on an Oil well driller compound, not a military installation. Inside, you're stopped by a man wearing a rifle and civilian clothes. Garrison's aide sees this, and immediately waves you through.

“Sorry about that Captain, the contractors can get kinda jumpy. They're on orders to try to keep people who aren't supposed to be here out.” She puts her glasses on before sitting at her desk and looking down at her paperwork, which seems to be doing it's best mountain impression.

“It's not a problem, Sarn't. There any chance I could speak with the General?” You ask, loosening the straps on your armor.

She nods and points to the door to the right of her desk. “Go for it, captain. Just be warned that he JUST got told he can't make sweet tea here though, so I'd tread lightly.”

You can't help but wonder why he can't make his favorite drink here as you knock on his door. His agitated tone, as well as your prior warning, definitely confirm that he's not in quite a good mood.

Different anon here, but I got a chance to see Muramasa and Masamune blades side by side when the NY Metropolitan Museum of Art got a chance to showcase a massive Japanese collection of different blades.
The Muramasa they had on display was amazing in how different it was from its contemporaries. I mean, no hamon, but using what looked like acid etching to cause the entire blade to shimmer in the light like a pool of oil, looking almost like Damascus steel.
It was quite a break from other katanas and tachis.

>[] Talk to him about the tea!

“Get in here and shut the damn door, Captain.” He grumbles before sitting down at his desk. Being a General apparently has it's perks, as his chair and desk have to have been flown over from his post in France. They're too nice for what you've seen of Saudi workmanship, and while you're not an agriculturalist, you can tell that leather and wood like that don't come from the desert.

“What's this I hear about you not being able to make the nectar of the gods, Sir?” you ask, cocking your head. You eyeball his bar-in-a-box, his collection of fine alcohols that are rumored to follow him from combat zone to combat zone. “Any chance I could make you a drink?”

He mumbles something to himself before answering you. “Some Saudi shithead thought it'd be funny to rip the copper piping out from the back of my refrigerator. I can't make ice, I can't cool the tea, the sugar separates. I can't make sweet tea. And yes. Gimme about three fingers of whisky.” He shakes his head.

While making the drink for him, he starts again. “What can I do you for, Captain? Your XO was in here earlier, getting his hands on an IMPAC card. He managed to get the one without a spending limit, so when he gets back you ARSOF fuckers are going to be living well. I think.”

You hand him the glass, filled with a few fingers of what smells like lifechangingly good Irish whisky. He happily accepts and takes a sip, savoring the flavor.

“Well sir, my recon corporal is reporting problems with the striker units. Both hers and another one of my girls is having issues. Normally I wouldn't bug you with this low-level crap, but we also don't have any striker techs with us. Right now I'm at four steelwheels, three sparklies, and my infantry.”

Garrison takes another sip before he replies. “Well captain, I have to be honest with you. NATO managed to cock up this whole thing from the get go. Political pressure made us move before all of our elements were staged, king Fahd made a big stink about American obligation to the middle east, which from what I understand is unlike him. All I can tell you right now is that there are striker techs on the way, but there's not a whole lot I can do other than get on a phone and yell. Trust me, that avenue has been explored thoroughly. Can't believe I don't have a fucking refrigerator.”

He muttered that last bit.

Now, that's not to belittle Masamune, though. I've seen his blades too, and they are absolutely beautiful as well. Maybe not as revolutionary as Muramasa, but still excellent blades. His kitchen knives looked pretty nice, too.

That's not a sure fire fact, but legend, one possibly made by the fact the Tokugawas were on the receiving end of Muramasa blades.

“General, believe me when I say this. I have two of the finest asset acquirement specialists in the entirety of the United States Army in the form of a nineteen year old gunner who didn't get enough parental supervision and a prodigal German driver. If you need a fridge, I can get you one.” You say, trying to lighten the mood.

He chuckles before waving his hand. “I have a multinational task force filled with possible rapists murderers and thieves. If I need something acquired for me, I have more than enough candidates, Captain. Though 1 ARSOF does leap out at me to be the first pick, not a whole lot of people want to fuck with tanks.”

Your turn to laugh. The General invites you to sit in front of his desk, which you do happily. “Actually sir, I did have a few more serious questions. How the hell am I supposed to deal with this Saudi royalty? Are they royalty and I bend to their will, or are they military subordinates based on their rank?”

“Actually, neither. You treat them like students, unless they're King Fahd himself. They can yell and scream their lungs out at you, but you are here for one thing: to teach. That's it.”

Easy enough, you think to yourself.

“You got it, sir. Any news from either front?” you ask, hoping to hear something about your brothers.

You stand up and tighten your armor back down. “Yessir, that's all I've got for right now.” You look behind you before lowering your voice and saying “maybe have one of your HQ guys keep an eye out for a fridge.”

He laughs and shakes your hand. “If your brothers are anything like you, you Bishops are good people.”

You can't help but smile as you walk down the stairs back outside.

Just as you step out, two Toyota pickup trucks filled with mattresses go screaming past you, filled with hooting Royal Marines behind the wheels and filling the beds.

“Fuckin' crazy Brits” you mutter to yourself, walking carefully back to your own billet. Once there, you find most of your company working on cleaning something or still going through their equipment. The witches all seem to be huddled around Patterson's strikers, which are now refusing to start.

Rockfield notices you as you step behind the lot of them. “We've got some major problems here, sir.”

“Yeah, I noticed. Now you can't even get them to start?” You ask, watching Patterson pour magic into the motors.

Your first sergeant just shakes her head. “No sir. And none of us are rated to fix the problem on an Abrams. Siegel over there has an idea, but she's afraid to get in there. They'll pull her striker qualifications if she's found out digging around in there.”

“Alright, well, I just got done talking to General Garrison. There's striker techs on the way, but I can't make any guarantees as to when they'll be here. As for now, just reassign yourself to company support, alright Mary?” You ask, looking to the corporal. She just nods and looks down, obviously disappointed with herself. Rosalez drapes her arm around Patterson's shoulders, whispering in her ear.

“Patterson,” you start. She looks up at you, tears welling up in her eyes. “It's not your fault. Technology breaks. It's not your magic, or how hard you tried. Sometimes, things just don't work. Okay? It'll be alright.”

Hopefully, you're able to head off that problem before it manifests.

Hoping to get some results by being resourceful over being an idiot and standing around with your thumb in your ass, you grab Nicky and walk over to the Royal Marine's billet. Once again, it's the same as yours, but since their detachment is quite a bit more sizable than yours, it's cleaning is going quite a bit faster. As you approach the courtyard, you're stopped by a Marine in full battle rattle.

“Help you, yank?” He says, thick accent and all.

“Actually, yes. You wouldn't happen to have a striker tech or two I could steal from you for a couple hours, do you?” You ask, looking the rather large man straight in the eye. You've talked down larger, though the look this man gives definitely says he isn't one to back down. Ever.

“Couldn't help you there. I'm just a guard. Wait here, I'll go get major Thomas.” He says, shouldering his rifle and stepping inside.

Their courtyard is almost exactly the same as yours, though in place of the plastic lawn furniture there's a thrown together dirt soccer pitch. The distance, end to end, can't be more than forty yards, but it's enough to have some recreation space.

Nicky elbows you and gestures with his chin to point out the two British Witches. Both have FV107 Scimitar strikers, reconnaissance witches. They're going over their strikers like your own witches were, hopefully not running into any problems. The striker techs are going to be getting plenty of work here soon, you think.

“You're here to borrow our striker techs, eh yanks?” A new voice emerges from the building. “well, I think we can make that happen. You'll just owe us a favor or two.”

Major Thomas, a shockingly young man, steps from the stairwell, pulling his own body armor on. His beret seems to fit perfectly, sleeves rolled to their exact measurements, boots bloused perfectly.

“That's exactly what we need, Major.” you say, extending your hand to shake.

He takes it with a smile, before saying “Not the first time the colonies have needed help. Don't be cheeky cunts about this one, though, eh?” He grins.

Nicky snickers, and you can't help but chuckle. “Hey, don't be massive faggots about how we run our unit and maybe we won't have to.” All in good fun, you think to yourself.

A pair of striker techs, in their own body armor, follow you back to your billet. Once there, they pull apart the side cowling and dive into the guts of Patterson's Abrams striker, mentioning more than once how the imperial system of measurement is vastly inferior to metric, and how they could both use a stiff pint at the end of this.

Eventually, though, they're able to pinpoint the problem. They manage to fix it, or at least “make the catty cunt workable until you get some yank techs to look at this”. Calling Patterson down before they leave, she manages to get it started up and moving well enough to teach with, though it's not entirely fixed.

You thank the two techs and send them on their way. Unfortunately, all you have left to do is either clean or wait around for Anderson.

In our world yeah, '89 was still in the 85s piece of garbage era. I actually really like the A2 model, which was pretty much a complete rebuild of the whole weapon, but I wouldn't trust a pre-A2 L85 to prop up a wonky table.

Besides, the G3 only exists because Belgium were dicks to Germany about the FAL.

You manage to get your own bedroom clean through vigorous floor and window scrubbing, followed by the organization of your personal stuff in neat stacks along the wall. Unfortunately, there's not a lot of room, and your window gives you an astounding view of the building next to yours wall, and the metal grate on the outside stifles the decent breeze that wants to roll through. Oh well.

Your bare bulb at the ceiling flickered to life when you flicked the switch as night fell. Evening in the desert is actually quite serene, or it would be if it weren't for the asshole in a mosque calling everyone to prayer at all hours of the day.

Metallica's Master of Puppets, played at full volume and synchronized between four vehicles seems to rip through the compound's serenity. You look out your window in time to see Anderson and his group screech to a halt, their four vehicles packed to the brim with stuff from the city.

Your troopers part for you to head down the stairwell. Arriving at the bottom, you see Anderson grinning like an idiot, overseeing the offload of your newly acquired...things. Three huge screen TV's complete with satellite connections, enough mattresses to outfit both your and the rest of the British detachment’s rooms, a pool table, new cooking gear, food from the local market, and two couches just begin the haul.

You throw your hands into the air and turn around. “Norton! Grab everyone who's not on a specific detail and get this shit inside. Someone from somewhere else sees this and we're gonna have some serious thievery problems!”

He nods and runs inside, seconds later re-emerging with all the hands he could gather. The televisions and pool table seem to be the most important thing, with three to four tankers carrying each up into the rec room.

You turn back to Anderson and his detail, who are still in the process of unloading their four rented u-haul trucks.

“You know what? I'm not even going to ask. How much more do you have?” You ask, helping one of your infantrymen with a particularly awkwardly shaped box.

“A shitpile, sir. We've got a Saudi police escort back to the shops, should only take one more trip.” He grunts, manhandling a couch down out of the cargo area by himself.

You look up at him. “Any chance you got General Garrison a fridge? He mentioned that his was uh, unserviceable.”

“No, but we can get one. Shouldn't be too hard, the guy we bought all this shit from gave us a huge discount since we bought so much. Crazy Hassan, he calls himself.” Anderson shrugs. “Fucker lives up to his name. Told him who we were and that we were spending dollars, he just about shit himself in glee.”

>>22556908

“Alright, well, get it done. And um, don't get us in the shit with HQ about being the rowdiest, I'm pretty sure the French or Brits are supposed to fill that role.” You grin, before turning back to your tankers as Anderson's detail roars back into the night. They've already gotten most of this haul up, hustling back and forth. Heading upstairs, you make sure to see that everyone has their sleeping area set up prior to worrying about the rec room. Naturally, they feel it should be the other way around.

You detail Rockfield to oversee that everyone's working to get the building set up. It's kind of a BS detail, as the building is almost humming with excitement over the new stuff. It's been months since anyone's had time to take their mind off of the war, and this will help immensely.

The only thing that you can do to come to mind is fill out a training schedule. It's giving you quite a time though, since you're not sure where you'll need to start. It's a pretty healthy rumor that Arabs can't fight, but you'd rather not proscribe to that level of thinking before you decide to start running your training.

Anderson's second trip into town provides just as much of a feeding frenzy as his first one did, even bringing back a secondhand refrigerator/freezer combo for the general and his staff. After the dust had settled hours later, your rec room, kitchen, and latrines all lived up to their name and were freshly spotless. Somehow, Anderson had managed to snap up a Nintendo too. Nicky and Hans may be your acquisition specialists, but this man this man was definitely the master.

In the wee hours of the morning, you're finally able to flop down onto your own mattress. Master though he may be, Anderson wasn't able to get any frames for beds, apparently Hassan just didn't have any. Either way, you're happy to be sleeping on an actual mattress this time, not a ranger grave, cot, or your commander's chair in the Booze Hound.

You're asleep almost as soon as you pull the sheet over your shoulder.

That's because it's run as a strategic wargame between the coaches, as well. Who can out think the other and put the right attack or defense in at the right time.

I've played at the high school level, and its as much a matter of remembering how the plays go and quickly adapting to what you see the other team doing as anything as purely physical as rugby. Which is more like a running brawl.
