Esther has been with you for a week, now.

She's learned how to make some bread, and is becoming somewhat notorious in the town around the Bear Arms Inn. One doesn't expect to see a kobold braking bread.

You've been sharing your bed with her. Given that you're a big, warm bear and she's a small, cold-blooded reptile, she appreciates the warmth.

You, Urnist Sine Grizzwald, the retired bear druid (that is, a bear that learned how to be a druid, not a druid that learned how to be a bear), are prod of the little kobold.

Today you're letting her sleep in. She's worked hard. Hard enough to deserve a present.

You're almost loathe to part with such a treasure. Not for its intrinsic value, but its sentimental value. So many memories down here. It's why you keep the entire area under several locks and keys.

But it will do. It's for Esther.

Yes... memories. What does this crown do? Where did you get it from?

It belonged to an evil lich whose armies threatened to overtake all the land until we meted out bear justice. Our most epic battle ever.

It imbues power and knowledge from realms beyond ours. It once belong to the emperor of an ancient kingdom, lost to time. He awoke and we needed it kill him, as he had gone mad over the centuries. The one who wears the crown feels the drive to rule, and has the wisdom to rule with.

It wasn't actually a crown. It used to be a golden wristband, belonging to a giant.

That giant had an... unfortunate accident.

In the years since then, it had been enchanted with the power to make illusory outfits and given to a young princess that your party had rescued. She had given the crown to you as a gift.

You re-lock the basement and bring it to Esther. She's just barely waking up when you get there.

You tell her you brought her something.

She tilts her head at you. "What...?"

You show her the crown.

Her eyes immediately light up as you place it in her hands.

She says it's very pretty, and goes to place it on her head.

You tell her what it does.

"I... I do not know clothes..."

You smile and sit next to her. She stares at you as you describe the beautiful dresses and clothes you've seen in your travels. From flowing gowns to sleek, deadly fatigues, to proud, incandescent plate.

She sits silently the whole time, completely awestruck.

You pat her on the head before leaving to tend to your inn. Perhaps a trip to your old tailor friend is in order, but that will have to come after work. It's been a long time since you've seen her. You're sure that can go a bit longer.

A surprised yip comes from the door as you leave, followed by joyful laughter.

The day passes. The usual patrons pass through your inn; Seasoned adventuring parties, townsfolk, travelling bards, the like. You spend a good amount of your time in the back, going over inventory and writing down what you'll need to buy.

Esther comes up to you while you're busy and gently tugs on your shirt.

"Urnist...?"

You ask her what she needs.

"No need anything... I heard someone at table talking about stealing something... I know you don't like stealing..."
>>
>>22557037

Yes, the owner of the shop was a Panda Bear from foreign lands. Her exotic nature drew you to her, and your fierce strength drew her to you. But you quickly saw the bear inside of her, and fell in love . The two of you enjoyed a happy, yet all too brief romance. You had to go on a quest and defeat the BBEG. She wanted to come help you, but you said that she would be safer at home, which is true. She had no class levels at the time.

By the time you killed the BBEG and returned from your quest, she had set up a very lucrative tailoring business in your home town. The two of you never got back together, for whatever reason. Perhaps you were afraid that she moved on? Perhaps she was afraid that the adventuring life had changed you. But every so often, you catch yourself looking into her eyes, as she looks back. You quickly look away, going about your business...

"No know. They said something about old man."

You think a moment. You tell her that you're placing protective wards around the inn tonight, and ask her to eavesdrop on them from a safe distance.

She's unsure about this.

You reassure her that it'll be fine. She don't get hurt.

She nods, then walks to a table a distance away and cleans it, trying to act inconspicous.

At the end of the day, you feel it's a good time to visit the tailor's. For Esther's benefit.

You're more nervous than you've felt in a long time. It's been so long since you've so much as talked to her.

It's been so long since you've had to use your magic. You suppose you can try to do something with it.

You ask him if he's serious about this.

"Yes."

Serious about robbing a bear.

"...Yes?"

You wildshape into a slightly larger bear, and that's when everything goes bad.

One of his colleagues loses his cool and lets an arrow loose. You don't immediately feel it in your chest, and roar as you tear open the chest of the closest one to you. You don't have the time to tell Esther to run.

Next you go after the leader, the one that was in your inn. You scrape along his chest but fail to kill him. He flops away and makes a break for it.

You set yourself upon the one remaining man, tearing his head loose with a powerful bite. The rest of the group of brigands sprint away from you.

It's then you feel the arrow. You get a pang of fear when you realize you've lost Esther. You quickly look around, and notice her hiding behind a few boxes.

She looks terrified.

DUDE CAN WE FEED THEIR BRAINS TO ESTHER TO MAKE HER GAIN THEIR KNOWLEDGE

SHE NEEDS TO BE REASSURED BUT ALSO SHE NEEDS TO KNOW THAT SOMETIMES YOU GOTTA EAT THE HEARTS AND BRAINS OF THE FALLEN TO GAIN THEIR SPIRITUAL POWER

also ask her if she thinks the panda is cute.
>>
>>22559713
Better get back to normal. The red glowy eyes are unnerving.

Tell Esther that you're sorry for scaring her. Also that you need to get somewhere you can get your arrow removed and your wound treated,
>>
>>22559713
>implying a puny arrow would even penetrate our magical Bear skin
Humans had trouble hunting regular bears with arrows. And we are a fucking magical bear. Blood on that arrow is not ours
>>
>>22559713
Make a big show about how hurt you are over the arrow.
Also pretend you pulled a ham string.
Limp home/to a hospital/to panda.
It'll make her more worried instead of afraid.
>>
>>22559766
Maybe its tipped with diamonds, the hardest metal known to man.
Maybe the banditos know about the mountains of gold in the basement.
>>
>>22559772
What? We don't want to show her that we are hurt. We are a fucking MAGICAL BEAR. We should be a badass unstoppable father figure, not old grandpa who can barely still walk.
>>
>>22559772
This is a terrible idea. We're a divine caster who's been running an Inn.

Odds of having cure spells prepared - Extremely fucking likely.

Cast Cure Bear.
>>
Tell her : "Never get scared. Be angry instead."
It's a very important life lesson
>>
>>22559793
>>22559806
She can figure out how indestructible we are later, right now she needs to have a reason to not run from the giant bear that just broke several dudes in a matter of seconds.

Also, the point is "pretend for her sake"
Also if the bandits come back thinking we're fucked up we can finish them off
>>
>>22559787
They sure were plotting, they probably have some fucking Bear Bane weapons. Assholes.
>>
>>22559819
Why do we need to pretend to be hurt by this? I ain't following the logic here. Yeah we just eviscerated some bad dudes in front of her, but they were bad dudes who were gonna hurt us for money. They had it coming.

A calm explanation that we're not a mindless berzerker shouldn't really tax us.
>>
>>22559819
>if the bandits come back
Bandits are currently on the half way to kindom border, with enough shit in their pants to fertilize 200 acres of land
>she needs to have a reason to not run from the giant bear that just broke several dudes in a matter of seconds.
Come the fuck on. We are a bear already, it's not that big of surprise. And besides, we attacked evil robbers, not her. She is just in shock from our awesomess
>>
>>22559569
Drama can come from hiding her from the black bear that lurks beneath this grizzled veteran. Hiding her from the things we've done, the person we really are.
>>
>>22559856
Well, if you imagine that all responds in the thread are inner voices, the bear is a really fucked up person.
>>
I still think that OP is Kazerad
>>
>>22559848

You know what, fuck it. Attempt to rationalize it to the stupid git, this'll be funny.
>>22559853
according to the look on esthers face in >>22559713
she seems mildly surprised. Or concerned for her own well being.
>>
>>22559848
To make us seem more "human", and not a monster.
>>
>>22559887
For fuck's sake, let's hear her out first, and make overcomplicated fake pain plans next
>>
>>22559887
Now you're talkin'
>>
>>22559899
>To make us seem more "human"
We are a bear, she is a Kobold, and humans just tried to rob us
Yeah, let's do that

You switch out of your wildshape, into your less-wild shape. You hunch over. taking a breather. You can't fight like you used to. You're too out-of-shape.

Esther is still very scared. She reaches out to point at the arrow in your chest.

"A-are you okay?"

You say that no, not right now, you aren't. You pull the arrow out of yourself, and heal yourself with your out-of-practice magic. Thankfully it didn't go too deep. It got stuck in your flab.

Okay, you take it back. Being out-of-shape saved you from catching an arrow in the heart.

Esther is now more concerned than scared. You tell her that now, you're okay.

She says you scared her.

You apologize, and gently hug her. You carry her the rest of the way home, stepping over the bodies of the men you killed.

It's much later when you get back to the Bear Arms Inn. You're exhausted.
>>
>>22559947
Time for sleep. Just. Flop over to bed.
>>
>>22559947
>Esther will remember that.
>>
>>22559947
Write a letter to the town patrol about their negligence. Or the emperor.
Wash pants of any blood stains. Eat honey smeared on a piece of bread, then sleep.
>>
>>22559947
Wait wait wait, what about the bodies? I'm pretty sure there will be alot of awkward questions about dead bodies that are mauled to death, and that sight wouldn't add any popularity to our inn.
We need to throw them away. And loot them for money.
>>
>>22559962
So fucking what? Do you seriosly expect a kobold to live a peacefull life in fantasy setting? The faster she learns combat, the better. Who knows, maybe a drunked adventurer will mistake her for a monster
>>
>>22559976
They are muggers and thieves.
Several of the patrons will attest that they were seen at the inn earlier and had to be forcibly removed.
This is not an issue.
Also they don't have gold, that's why they're muggers.
>>
>>22560009
Yes, but new customers sure won't go in the inn with several dead bodies near it
HEY! I got an idea. This is Medieval times, rite? How about we chop the head off one guy, put it over the door, and rename the inn to : "Mugger's head"
>>
>>22559993
dude. Maybe esther will remember how a bunch of mean dudes tried to hurt papa bear, and got messed up. Maybe she'll remember how weak she was.
Dont jump to conclusions. Calm down.
>>
>>22559962
>>22559993
This. Life ain't easy. Life can be nice, life can be fulfilling. Good things can happen if you work at it. But bad shit exists, and bad shit will happen. Hopefully she'll remember the upside to the violence, that didn't have to happen if the stupid dudes hadn't decided to try robbing a(n admittedly out of shape druid) bear. C'mon now.
>>
>>22560026
The bodies are in the middle of town. Half way between the tailor and home.
Also severed heads went out last season, rabbits feet are in fashion now.
>>

You carry her up the stairs to your room, and let her down before collapsing face-first on the bed. You don't have the presence of mind to clean the blood off.

You do, however, briefly think about the bodies you left in the street. That might prove problematic later, but there isn't anything you can do about that now. You're sure you can easily explain that you were assaulted, and you have plenty of witnesses to their behavior in the Inn if someone comes asking questions. The effort of the last hour, the actions that once came so easily, have completely exhausted you.

As you drift out of consciousness, you feel Esther gently poking your arm. You mumble something to the effect that you'll be fine and to go to bed, but you're not sure if it got across.

In another second you're gone. Esther eventually climbs under the covers, relieved that the bear she looks up to is OK.
>>
>>22559453
I agree. I hate this sort of shit because OP doesnt take answers, no, he carefully selects the faggiest, worst answer possible.
>>
Sorry for the short thread, guys; I had a late start and am very tired so I was kinda in a rush to end this one.

More Esther next weekend, or maybe even tomorrow depending on things. You never know! I keep it exciting.

I'll be around for a little bit to answer questions. Thank you very, very much for reading. You guys are the best.

Wait what? I thought we were about 40 years old in human ages.
>>

Roughly 50. Which, considering the strain one goes through as an adventurer, is a perfectly fine age to be old and tired.

Anyway, I'm off-- again, Thank you very much for reading Esther. It means a whole lot to me and I can't thank you enough.
