Hey anon. Let's get some tanks going, shall we?

“You've got to be fucking joking me” you say, your eyes pressed to your binoculars. You've been at this for three weeks, and the Saudi tankers still can't hit shit. They've got damn near the same gun as you do, firing damn near the same round, at a target the same range away. You've given them seemingly un-ending classroom lessons via two translators. You've even given individual instruction with Nicky, pointing out the nuances of the M68 rifled cannon and how that translates to accuracy. They still miss armor sized targets at one thousand yards, your standard armor engagement range. Your other lessons, basic strategic things, fire and maneuver, combined arms, the like, had all gone well you think. It seems the officers took from those the lessons they'd need to wage a war. Well, all the lessons except for maybe how to be an officer and not an order-machine.

“Their infantry was twice as bad, mate.” Major Thomas says, standing to your left, his own binoculars held idly at mouth level. “There was one cheeky fellow who claimed it was the rifle's fault, not his. Their targets were at one hundred bloody meters. I believe that's when my most junior enlisted man snatched his rifle out of the Saud's hands, and shot a target at four hundred meters. Standing. Magnificent bastard, him.”

Next to him, Anderson shakes his head. “For fuck's sake. A hundred yards and they can't hit with rifles. You two ready to shoulder this war, if and when it kicks off?” He says and flicks his cigar's stub into the sand. “Ain't gonna be no Japanese intervention to save our asses. We get this one all to ourselves.”

“You yanks, you're almost all the same. Who said anything about needing the Japanese? You've got the English. We're twice as good and our royalty is better looking!” Thomas says with a smile.

Further down the range's line, the warning to plug your ears gets hollered down. The three of you do almost instantly, before transitioning to your binoculars double quick. You're able to watch the round scream down the open space and slam into the dirt...almost ten yards to the right of the intended target.

You sigh, knowing that this means more classroom instruction. Three out of four tanks of this current platoon had missed, meaning that eleven of twelve tanks had missed thus far. The tankers, far more concerned about themselves than their skills, were all out of their tanks, having tea.

Thomas looks down at his watch, then back at the tea-sipping tankers. “It's not even noon yet! How can the wankers be having teatime when it's not even noon!?”

“Well sir, want me to go bust their asses? I can send Siegel over there. She's apparently acting like her Q-Course cadres were, and she's having a hell of a fun time with it.” Anderson says, stepping next to you.

[] “Let them have their fun, we'll see who's sipping tea when the Iraqis swarm over the border.”
[] “Absofreakin'lutely. If they're so concerned about their tea, maybe they'll have their heads on straight when it's knocked onto the deck.”

I'm not sure how privy we are to the whole "Why Arabs Lose Wars." stuff IC, but a possible way of nipping that shit in the bud is discretely looking for amenable rank and file, and teaching this shit to them. Let it diffuse amongst the ranks and whatnot. Because obviously lecturing from a course is not working.

“You know what?” You ask nobody in particular before looking at Anderson. “Fuck it. Let her off the leash. Hopefully it'll make them realize we're serious, if nothing else.”

Anderson smiles before walking to the range your witches were holding. Your witches had all been working almost nonstop with your new striker techs, flown direct from one of the western European depots. He has a quick word with the only special forces witch you've ever seen and points over to the lounging Saudis. She nods, wipes her hands, tucks her hair back, and almost instantly, you can see the change in her demeanor. Going from helpful and friendly (you think) to stone-faced killer must be her specialty, because she's really good at it. Like, scary good.

Seigel, arriving at the pop up tent that the Saudis had been under, seems to loom over the table, fists on her hips. One of the officers sees her and sneers, before the final warning to plug your ears is shouted down the line. Not wanting to miss this, you slap your hands over your ears and watch as Seigel takes a half step back, and slams her heel into the plastic lawn table holding all the cups and kettle just as the 105 millimeter cannon roars. Had to have been a coincidence, right?

Either way, the desired effect is achieved. The group of tankers stare at Seigel like she's a woman possessed and attempt to scramble, but they're not nearly fast enough. Immediately, she's upon them, hauling men up by their collars and screaming in their face before casually tossing them towards their vehicles. You can't quite hear what she's saying, but whatever it is, you know it's not pretty. More than once, she stops long enough for a Saudi to acknowledge that she's speaking to him, before she starts smoking them again.

“Jeeesus. Christ.” You say, looking to Anderson. He just grins. “Remind me to never piss you people off.”

“Aw hell, sir. Truth be told, she's being nice. During selection, I had a Cadre who went around stealing people's weapons, then got on them for not being armed. Made for a good time when they were supposed to pull watch.”

“Either way, LT. I don't plan on getting on special forces bad side any time soon.”

“Shit sir, you're special forces now too. Don't forget.” He says with a grin.

A distance away, you can see Nicky frantically waving his arms and shouting for your attention.

The entire article talked about WHY such attempts among Arabs never works.
It would be far more effective to subject them to constant and unrelenting training and forcing them to apply classroom, memorized lessons in the field. Exercises like, when they complain that the equipment is the problem, taking it from them an demonstrating that the weapon is working properly. If the tank crews can't hit anything, put us in their tanks and them in ours, and demonstrate that the guns are properly sighted in.

Possibly even separate the officers from the enlisted and shoot the officers with frozen paintballs as part of a fire drill.

But above all, tell them in no uncertain terms that their victory can only be achieved by their deaths. They must kill their Arab selves and become NATO soldiers if they want to win.
And as for the princess, tell her that she's being judged against the British and Imperial Japanese royalty; if she wants respect from other royals, she needs to prove her pedigree.

You don't particularly want to leave, as watching Siegel tear the Saudis apart is fun, but such is the life of a company commander. Walking over to the vehicle that Nicky is perched on, you see him point down the range towards the targets, and signal for you to take a look with your binoculars.

By God, the gunner of the last vehicle had managed to score a hit. It wasn't a particularly pretty one, high and to the right on the cutout's turret, but nonetheless, it was a hit.

“Holy fuckin' moses!” you mutter to yourself. You drop your binoculars to your chest and hustle the rest of the distance to the vehicle. On board, Nicky still has his binos pressed to his eyes, blinking a few times to make sure that what he was seeing was a real, legitimate hit. It was.

“First time in three weeks, sir! First time in three weeks we've seen a hit! A real, honest-to-God hit!” he says, completely dumbfounded.

>>

I was thinking that we do it at night.
We tell the officers that, given their reputation and position as the elite of the Saudi military, that we want to test/strengthen that reputation by giving their officers special on-hand training with our special forces, the British commandos, and the French Foreign Legion. We point out that this will be a full-contact exercise with paint rounds.

Then we take them out to the desert, give them a few minutes to orient themselves, and then we make their world nothing but pain and suffering.
We record it all, of course, and at the end we review their failures.

>[] “Make him do it again, Nick.”

You look down through the hatch at the Saudi gunner. He couldn't be much older than Nicky, though the mustache doesn't help him look any younger at all. He still had his eyes pressed to his scope, looking like he was making fine adjustments. Maybe this one had payed attention to the Kentucky Windage lesson. The rest of the crew that you could see were looking up at you expectantly.

“Make him do it again, Nick.”

“Wai-what? Sir, isn't one good enough for us?” He asks.

“One is outstanding and makes this tank the best out of the lot. If we were having a competition, they'd be winning. Make sure they know that when you pull the terp over. But this is a range. Once might be a fluke.” You reply, looking up at the target.

Nicky just stares for a moment before calling one of the interpreters over. He repeats almost verbatim what you said before hearing it turned into what sounds like a series of loogies being hawked. The gunner, showing incredibly uncharacteristic discipline, still doesn't look up from his gun sight. He takes his right hand off the trigger and taps his helmet twice before gingerly setting his hand back on the handle.

You plug your ears before the thunderclap of the M68 hits again.

By god. He'd done it again. A hit, this time mid and to the right, right in the road wheels of the target.

“Nicky. That's a mobility kill. The first royal house guards have just killed their first tank.” You say, making sure of what you're saying.

“Holy shit, sir. I just...holy shit. And to think, it only took three weeks!”

“Now, if only their infantry would do the same!” Anderson mutters behind you. He's got a newspaper in one hand, binoculars in the other. In the distance, Siegel was still tearing the tea party apart, much to the amusement of Major Thomas.

“Nicky, give this crew their lunch, and make sure the other Saudis know what they have to do to earn a break.” You say, stepping beside your infantry's commander.

“Oh boy,” you start, walking back towards where Siegel was giving the Saudi tankers a bad day. “A newspaper. I wonder what things are worth my time in there?”

Anderson chuckles. “Not a whole lot, actually. Few things of note though, you know those air defense nerds over at KFIA? They picked up a shitpile of radar hits over the Persian gulf. Ones that didn't ping their IFF. That's not in the paper though, that's a dispatch from Garrison. Wants to keep us in the know.”

“Wait a second, the fuck? They'd pick up NATO aircraft, right?”

“Yep. Dunno, sir, not much else on that bit. As for the paper, well, you know Iraq, bunch of friggin' loonies given guns. They're getting louder about that whole slant-drilling thing and are now claiming that RSLF 'special forces', whatever the fuck those are, are starting border skirmishes. The kingdom is of course denying both claims.”

You shake your head. “Jesus Christ, those fuckin' retards. They actually want a fight, don't they?”

“Looks like it, sir. Not much else in the news here. Hey, isn't this your brother?”

Anderson opens the paper to a back page, showing a picture of Frank shaking the president's hand. The photo wasn't dated, though the story went on about the Christmas ball at the white house.

You shake your head. “There's a fuckin' war going on, Reds in our back yard, and the goddamn flyboy squid has time to go shake the President's hand. If that ain't some bullshit, I don't know what is.”

Anderson shrugs, turning to look at you. Pointing at your Green Beret, he starts. “Shit sir, he doesn't have one of those. Or a favor chip. Or a company under his command. Or a charge to hold the Oder-Neisse...then again, that's kinda defunct now. What's he got on you? A few years? A trip to the white house? A navy cross? Who gives a shit? Medals don't mean jack if your boys ain't around to back you up. And words of wisdom, those parties at the white house are boring as hell. Especially for the uniformed.”

He flips to a page detailing the sinking of the Kitty Hawk. “Shit, I wouldn't trade places with him right now anyway. Whatever medal he's gonna get for that flying carrier shit ain't gonna make up for this.”

“Not really the point I'm getting at, LT. I mea- Is that what I think it is?” You ask, looking over at where Siegel was.

“Aw hell. I think so.” Anderson replies, quickly folding the paper back up and tucking it into his new model armor. “Reckon we ought to go over there, sir?”

“Yep. Post haste.” You reply.

Siegel was still there, sure. She was just now yelling at Princess-Lieutenant Fatima Tahira, who had apparently tried to come to her company's rescue. Unfortunately, it would seem she picked the wrong side of the argument to be on, and was defending her tankers. Worse yet, some of them were trying to salvage what tea they could, pouring from the kettle.

By the time you've arrived, it's devolved into a full on screaming match, with Siegel raising incredibly valid points about the shortcomings of the armor company, and Tahira apparently attempting to defend not much but the actions of her officers. Of course, the standard blame of “this gear is crap” is being used to it's fullest extent, something Siegel isn't willing to acknowledge.

“If the gear's garbage, how can we use it effectively? Huh? Can you tell me? Because if it's as bad as you lazy, stupid, self-centered jackasses say, then we're all fucked when the Iraqis roll on us, huh? We must be, because the almighty royal Saudi land forces can't hit shit, and they're the elite of the elite!” Siegel shouts, stepping towards the pe-ell.

Tahira isn't phased by the special forces witch. “The RSLF is the best fighting force in the middle east! The royal house guards are the elite, and they will be treated as such! How dare you come into our country and tell us how to live?!”

How likely is it that we would be able to convince the King that pretty much his entire officer population is rotten and needs to be replaced with NATO officers? Because I think that would be the most effective way to fix this shit.

"Your King personally asked NATO to provide us to train you; if you are really the elite, then why would we be needed to train you? In fact, why couldn't your unit in three weeks of instruction, hit any of the targets that have been set up.
"The equipment is not to blame, for we can use them just fine. So the only thing left is operator error. Your royal status is of little worth when you can't even defeat a unit of enlisted peasants a single time even with equivalent equipment. At least the British and Imperial Japanese Royal House units back up their pedigrees with actual results.
"And one final thing: unknown fliers were detected over the Gulf. They weren't ours so they could have only been the Iraqi's. You had best start producing some results, because Iraq is coming far sooner than you think."
>>
>>22795627
Waste of perfectly good NATO officers, at that point should just crater Iraq.

> [] step in!

You immediately know what you have to do, even though you really don't want to.

“Corporal Siegel, please go see to the strikers. I'll handle this.” you say, looking Siegel in the eye. A brief flash of defiance shows before she stalks off, making sure to kick as many tea cups out of her way as she can.

“Captain, as a member of the Saudi royal family, I must insist you control your personnel!” Tahira starts. She gets about halfway through the next word in line before you're able to cut in.

“You'll stop right now if you know what's wise.” you start, watching the surprise on the pl's face develop. “My company is controlled fully. I authorized Siegel to do what she just did, and you will accept it. Your men, your officers, have shown zero development in the entire three weeks we've been here. They have shown me that not only is Saudi Arabia a useless hanger-on to the other NATO nations, but also a liability. If it were up to me, which you had better thank Allah that it isn't, I would immediately trim the fat from the treaty.

“In these three weeks, you personally have shown me that Saudi royalty is such only in name. The Japanese just stepped into the war, did you know that? The fucking Japanese threw in with NATO, and their royalty actually does things. They fight, and win, because they've trained long and hard to do so. They earn their titles, unlike you, princess-Lieutenant. It must be nice to be given rank, instead of having to earn it.
>>
>>22795912

“I have seen progress with one vehicle. One crew. In three weeks of instruction, your company has a success rate of eight percent. Eight. Do you understand? In order to make your men, your elite house guards, trained to the basic standard of almost every other NATO nation, it would take me another twelve weeks. We do not have that kind of time.”

Princess-Lieutenant Tahira Fatima looks shocked. Maybe someday, she'll accept that she can't get away with murder around you, but apparently today isn't that day. She hasn't offered a single rebuttal, though, her fists are shaking at her sides.

I fucking dare her to do it. There will be more guns than she can count pointed at her face in a second. Striking a superior officer is serious shit in wartime. We could have her shot for that. She touches us, she's removed from command.
>>
>>22796116
If you had read the article it points out that the problem is the culture and the officer corps.
Even is the princess tried, if the officers are unwilling or unable to make the necessary adjustments, then we have to be directing our ire at them, not just her.
Your actually only directing this at her, who's trying to protect the men under her command from you, rather than directing this speech at the people who need it, the officers and even the enlisted.

“With that, Miss Tahira, I'm done. I am now charging you with the responsibility of training your company. My company will be here in an advisory capacity, and that's it. Let's see if you can get some results out of your company.” You say, stepping back.

The rest of the day goes smoothy, if not a bit tensely. A few fluke shots show promise, though their second shots go wide and dash your hopes. Private Haytham, the gunner of the only M60 to hit it's target reliably, is championed by the company. At least they have esprit de corps, you think to yourself. If nothing else, you HAVE seen progress today. Tomorrow, however, would bring a new challenge, you're sure. Fire and maneuver drills are always a good time, and while the Saudis have the concept down on paper, you're sure they'd find some way to screw the whole thing up in practice.

That night, sitting at your desk, running through your training schedule your stomach growls. Most days, you'd be happy to try the local cuisine, but goat skull didn't sound like too much of a delicacy to you, and MRE's are totally out of the question after having eaten them morning noon and night in Europe. A quick rap sounds on your door. Siegel's voice rings out, asking permission to see you.

“Come in!” you shout, signing away at a requisition form. Next was a stack of AAR's, your dreaded enemy.

Siegel enters your office and stands at attention before you put her at ease, inviting her to sit in one of the folding chairs in front of your desk. She does, squirming a bit to get the seat to warm up. Must be cold to have to sit on one of those with no pants.

“you know, you could always wear a set of pants.” You say, glancing up.

“I'd rather not, sir. Messes with the magic interface of strikers.” She replies, face not betraying any emotion whatsoever. God damn, the 803 were scary.

“Anywho, what's up Corporal?” you ask, knocking out another signature. Why you had to have AAR's for running a range escaped you, but Garrison wanted them on his desk by noon tomorrow.

“Well sir, this is really your top sergeant’s job, but she hadn't knocked on your door yet, so I thought I'd bring it up. The two units aren't meshing well. They're working together incredibly well, of course, but off the range and outside of exercises...well, there's a definite rift. It's not a morale thing, either. The buzz around the company is almost all about Iraq or your brother, which I suppose is good.” She says, not breaking eye contact with you once.

“Well then. Go on?” You start, capping your pen. “You wouldn't have come straight to my office if you didn't have a suggestion. Also, who are the troublemakers?”

She shakes her head. “See, sir, that's the problem. They're not troublemakers, it's that tankers and infantry don't really get to work together this closely this often. The infantry is having trouble adjusting to the new job. Greenie Beanies are meant to teach, right? Well now they're just shooters. It's a big jump for them.

“But what I can tell you is that in Q-Course, we had a battle buddy system...only with non combatant personnel. Mine was a girl named Cynthia Gordon. Striker tech. Sir, I know more about her than I know about myself, and vice versa. I'd say assign specific infantry to specific vehicles, make them the shooters for that tank only, and then they'll probably bond.” She leans back and brushes a lock of hair out of her face.

Interesting, because IOTL the Saudis became the foremost clan of nomadic desert goatfuckers through an unholy alliance between the clan head and the religious nutjob who came up with Wahhabism, then became a major pain in everyone's ass when the British backstabbed the far more civilized and sane Hashemites and let the Saudis take over the Hedjaz (the bit that has the Holy Cities). They've spent the 90 or so years since then using oil money to live lives of hedonistic excess while simultaneously funding the craziest, most reactionary form of Islam possible around the world to make themselves look pious. They essentially are the reason why modern Islam in the real world seems to be dominated by the lunatics.

Which makes me wonder how their rise to power changed in this world, where they apparently aren't huge assholes. Them not being such titanic cockbags would be kind of a global change for the better.

I'm kind of surprised we weren't doing that already, although I've heard some things about how the US military can be really stupid when it comes to grunt/vic cooperation.

If we do that, though, we need somebody commanding each tank and its parasite infantry as a single unit. Preferably whoever's commanding the tank, since they're in the best position to have time to command without somebody shooting directly at them and without a more urgent task. Make the head of the parasite infantry platoon the XO.

Just as Siegel stands up to leave, you manage to stop her. “Hey, Siegel. I haven't eaten yet, have you? Kitchen should be free, care to join me?”

She merely shrugs. “Sure, If you want me to. I didn't have anything else planned, other than some light reading.”

You both head down towards the kitchen, freshly cleaned by some poor member of your company. Cleaning up after sixteen tankers and twelve infantrymen and their mess is no small chore. Whoever drew that detail was undoubtedly passed out on his bunk.

“Shit yes I went to college!” you reply, making sure to place a thick layer of cheese on the slices of bread. “Running back four years straight! Still hold school records. Won the Heisman even! We'd have gone further, too, but there isn't a championship system for college ball.”

She cocks her head quizzically while sitting at the small table there. “Why didn't you go pro, sir? If you won the Heisman, I'd imagine an NFL team would've snapped you up.”

You shrug, flipping the first sandwich. “Dunno. Guess I wanted a commission more. Woulda been neat to play for a pro team though, I guess, but I can't really imagine myself doing anything other than this.”

“So you really like your command then, eh sir?”

“I dunno. I like my company. It's a shitpile of responsibility though, sometimes I wish it were more carefree. I gotta look out for those guys and now you girls, too. It's a big transition.”

You bring the first grilled cheese off the skillet and onto a paper plate, depositing it in front of Siegel. “Want a coke?”

“No sir, water. Coke's bad for you.”

You recoil in horror. It may be true, but damned if it isn't worth it. “BAH! Health nuts, the lot of you.”

“Sir, I've not been out of Q-course for too long. I still have all those good habits from training.” She smiles. The first time you've seen her do that.

I maybe wrong, but isn't Pepsi considered the commie cola because it was one of the few brands imported into the Soviet Union? I seem to remember an old Lewis Grizzard column where he bitched about while visiting the Soviet Union, he wanted a Coke but only got a warm Pepsi instead. “Miss Siegel, honestly. Care for something else to drink? Hot chocolate maybe?” You say, flipping your own sandwich.

“No sir, water's fine. Besides, hot chocolate with grilled cheese? Do you even HAVE taste buds?” she replies, making a face.

“Okay, okay. Water it is.” You relent and hand her a bottle of water out of your 'bev-fridge', aptly coined by Michael, your loader. Maybe two days afterwards, some genius with a can of krylon and a cardboard stencil made sure that everyone who ever saw that refrigerator would know about it's name.

Pulling your own sandwich off the skillet before replacing it on a cold burner, you sit across the table from her and crack your coke. You take a long drag off the can, capped with a loud “aaaahh”. Siegel just makes a face and sticks her tongue out.

“So, Seigel. What'd you do before 1ARSOF?” You ask around a mouth of cheese. There's bread there too, but not a lot.

“Not a whole lot I can tell you about, sir. Training, force pro, run ranges. I dunno. Hard to say without saying too much.”

“Alright then, I guess we'll get off that subject. You know how everyone else is doing with their training?” You ask, going back to business.

She nods. “Sure do. Everyone's having trouble. It's like the Saudis don't want to train. Like, they don't want to or something, or they refuse to learn. Being hard with them doesn't work, being soft with them doesn't work. Hands on, hands off, classroom, range, ftx. Nothing seems to work, sir. Major Thomas can't get them to shoot a target at a hundred meters, and Commandant Du-Cheil is having the same problems.”

“Christ...” you mutter to yourself.

Siegel nods in agreement. “Whole lot of ugly in a little place, sir. Thanks for the sandwich.” She says, cleaning her place at the table.

After cleaning the kitchen and sniping the rest of your paperwork, you've managed to come to a crossroads. In a rare occurrence, the Nintendo is free, but it's late and your bed calls. Decisions, decisions.

That's because the Soviets focus on setting up a plan and making sure that people damn well follow it, and on having comprehensive instructions on what to do should circumstances change. This requires no actual thought on the part of anyone below the rank of general, and only needs a certain minimal level of competence and bravery from the soldiers to work.

Even then, they still couldn't actually make the Arabs competent, they just did a less shitty job than the Western methods which absolutely require initiative and competence from both low-level officers and NCOs to work, along with at least some degree of education among the enlisted.
>>

Find Major Thomas and Commandant Du-Cheil, get the approval from General Garrison, we set up a couple of targets that will be "Iraqi armor", and the Saudi's have to hit them.
If they can't, we take them on a midnight drill where we shoot them with paintballs and rubber bullets.

Just make sure that our plans require absolutely nothing out of the Saudis beyond them not getting in our way when we do all the work. Because they are not and will never be even remotely competent.

About the only possible way to get even minimal use out of them would be to make it clear that the Iraqis might shoot them if they fight but we'll definitely shoot them if they either run or surrender without our express permission, and somehow I don't think high command would like us instituting commissars.

Honestly, telling them "You will fight the Iraqis or WE will kill you" is probably about the only way that we can motivate them. The only thing is we have to actually have the balls to follow through on that threat.

I wonder, do the witches show any more initiative than the regular officers? Because PL has been pretty vocal and active in complaining, at least.

If they *are* better at thinking, then perhaps we could get them to arrange forces into, for lack of a better word, Kampfgruppe, led by a witch who could be sort of reasonably expected to use initiative in directing their troops at a platoon or company level.

>>
>>22798649
IIRC, the Kuwaitis were much better IRL, although that's probably because they had some incentive to have an army that wasn't a huge pile of fail.

Basically, they only had what in a larger Arab country would be considered the elite force (the Republican Guard, the Arab Legion, etc.), so they could actually fight reasonably well. They were just doomed because of sheer numbers when the Iraqis came.
>>
>>22798651
You're trying to tell me that they wouldn't tell useless cannon fodder "Take your chances with the enemy or definitely get canister shot from us" if it was the only thing that would get the job done?
>>
>>22798682
No, I'm telling you they wouldn't get away with it when working with an ostensible "ally".
>>
>>22798674
The problem is that IRL the Saudis really are just that terrible, and there doesn't seem to be much difference here.

We got around it in the real world by not actually having them do anything beyond let us move troops and supplies through their territory and letting them send their fighter jocks up to get shot down by the Iraqis. If we had actually needed them to fight, we'd have been up shit creek.

So we'd better hope that we don't actually need them to do anything here, because if we do then we're fucked.
>>
>>22798694
Let me put this in perspective: the Romanians the Germans used to protect their flanks at Stalingrad were infinitely more useful and competent than the Saudis can even dream of being.
>>
>>22798638
Can you go be a sociopath somewhere else please?

Finding your way into the rec room, you file through the games at your disposal. Ghosts n' Goblins jumps out at you, but you've already played through that game once. Picking your next conquest at random seems to be a good idea. At least, it did before you started playing.

Half an hour in, you're hollering and screaming at the TV and NES and programmers and whoever's responsible for this damn game. It's not that it's kicking your ass, it's that it's just a completely broken, bad game. Oh well, though. You've never been one to allow something to beat you. If you have to beat your head against a brick wall to get past it, you'll do it.

“aw hell. Sorry sushi, I forgot.” You reply, reaching forward to turn the big screen down. She waves the sentiment away.

You turn the TV off and press the power button to your NES before tossing the controller on the rug. “Sure thing, Sushi. Lemme grab my armor and sidearm, I'll meet you by the door?”

“Last one there's a rotten egg, sir.” She says with a smile.

That's you, by the way. You're the rotten egg. Her room is a lot closer to the rec room than your office is, she's there with Muramasa over her shoulder and her boonie down over her eyes.

“You sure you're not gonna snooze away on me?” You ask, pulling your armor tight over your chest.

She nods and yawns. “Positive, sir. I used to take midnight strolls all the time before I went to the academy.”

Stepping out into the crisp night air, you and the young recon witch pass through your courtyard before you arrive on what's being called “international avenue'. All the contingents were billeted on this road at some point, and the road leads right out the gates onto an on ramp.

Ooishi tucks a thumb under the shoulder strap of her rifle and thrusts her other hand into her blouse's pocket. “Some wild shit today, huh sir?”

“Sir...she's...she's not a bad girl. She's just...she's stubborn. And scared.”

“Well,” you start to reply, shaking your head. “She's gonna have to get over that fear. Especially if this war's on it's way to the sandbox. I was shit-scared as a butterbar in my first unit. Terrified I'd fuck it all up.”

“And did you, sir?”

“By the grace of god, no. Almost broke down, though. It's easier to have a whole school look up to you to run a ball than it is to have a company of men expect you to lead them into battle.”

“The nature of war, sir.”

You can't help but laugh. “You got me there, Sushi.”

"Siegel came to see me, something about the infantry not gelling with the armour. She suggested assigning specific shooter/tank pairs, to try and improve that. What do you think?
She also said Rockfield should have brought it up, any idea why she wouldn't?"

"Help her out, alright? Give her some pointers on how to go about it. I have to be harsh, I'm the CO after all.

You're not and you're a witch as well. She'll listen to you a damn sight more than she'll will from me. With any luck, what she'll take in will be enough when the pin finally drops."

>here they're given commands as soon as they pass the academy
Does that mean that Tahira has no command or officer training, but she's given command of a company by simple virtue of being a Royal?

Not unheard of, just that we're going to have to put her through an accelerated officer training course.

"Siegel came to me about the problems with the infantry and tank crews not meshing, and said that Rockfield should have brought it up.
"Know why Rockfield didn't?"

"Think football would teach them to work like a team?"

Say it in a joking manner.

You walk past the General staff building, seeing the hard men dressed in civilian clothes standing guard. You chuckle to yourself.

“What do you think of that, Sushi?” You jerk your chin in their direction.

“Hell if I know, sir. Group dressed up? They stay out of our business, we stay out of theirs. All is peachy.” She shrugs.

“Hey, speaking of peachy, how's top doing?” you ask, recalling your earlier conversation with Siegel. “I had Sea Gull show up and let me know that there was an issue with the unit getting along. It's since been handled, but why didn't Rockfield let me know?”

Ooishi stops and looks at you. “She's your company SNCO. Probably buried in paperwork, sir. You know, getting the techs their gear, making sure we have shells and whatnot for the ranges. You'd have to ask her, honestly. I'm just speculating at this point.”

You reach the gates of the compound, and spin on your heel. You and Ooishi make it back to your billet making small talk the rest of the way, through which you're able to learn that she's from a small Asian family that settled in the bay area of California. Oddly enough, her family runs a sushi restaurant, probably why she found it so amusing when you started calling her that.

Back at your billet, however, the story is completely different from when you left it. The entire building is lit up, Anderson waiting by your door. His hand-cranked radio is tuned to the BBC, which he's had playing non stop your whole deployment.

“You might want to have a listen, sir.” He says, cranking the battery to life.

The reporter is speaking quickly, his words and sentences punctuated with machine gun fire and explosions. You can't make out much, other than where he is, KFIA, and that US Army air defense elements are lighting off like crazy.

Anderson switches the tuner to one of the local news networks, where the reporter is lighting off in rapid fire Arabic. You definitely can't make out what he's saying, but the frantic tone and background noise of stuccato rifle fire are more than enough to get the point.

“Iraqi air flew over the gulf and is hitting King Fahd. Ground is punching over the border as we speak, near Kahfji and Ar'ar. Two pronged push.”

You're not quite shocked, seeings as you knew this was on it's way, but it's still always news to hear that another theater of the war has opened up.

“Garrison sent a runner. Said to expect a brief in ten or fifteen minutes. Be ready, be there. I'm ready to go whenever you are, sir.” Anderson finishes, flicking his radio off.

“Oh goodie, another war to fight.” You sigh. “Better than teaching people who refuse to learn.” you mutter to yourself.

Once again, it was incredibly fun. I really enjoy doing this quest, anon. Keep an eye out during Strike Witches 1989 this week for the next installment of Tank Witches 1989. My schedule sucks. =[

No. I should've been more clear, my bad.
I'll have the date and time of my next run posted in his quest.
>>
>>22800266

Ah, thats better. Probably wont be able to withstand both quests side by side.

Well damn. Hopefully that one guy shooter manages to shame the others into doing better otherwise we're SOL.

I foresee incoming PTSD when the PL loses her entire unit

If that's what it takes to get these people to listen then so be it.
>>

There wouldn't be anyone left to listen.
