OK. DominariaGuide is a gigantic faggot but his concept wasn't bad. I am hereby ripping it off and honouring the high roll. Intro:

>You were once the greatest hero of the land. A knight most powerful, most dedicated, who rose up from humble beginnings to bring light and justice to the people. Then you went up against your arch-enemy, the mage-lord Xaraxxes.

>He killed you.

>But Xaraxxes didn't just slay you and be done with it. He wanted to torture you and gloat. So he stuck your spirit in one of his magical gems instead of letting you pass to your righteous reward in the afterlife.

>Xaraxxes under-estimated you. For years, you waited inside the gem, enduring the cackling spellcaster's attempts to break and demoralize you. In time his visits came more and more seldom, until finally he forgot all about you.

>Then something changed. Something opened up in the world. You poured your consciousness into the empty space - then your eyelids fluttered and you gasped in new breath for the first time in... who knows how long?

>You are lying face-down in a pool of blood. Your head hurts a lot and you feel confused. There's a lot of noise, perhaps the sound of battle nearby? What do you do?

RULES: All responses to be accompanied by d100 roll. Top result in the first three is binding. In the case of ties, I will attempt to combine. In the case of nonsense/suicide commands, I reserve the right to take the edge off.

Rolled 98

>>22839224
Climb to my feet, grab a sword, and start killing.
>>
Rolled 66

>>22839224
Meditate briefly to regain your inner balance.

Just because you were a knight doesn't mean you're only limited to swinging a sword. You once apprenticed under a master of the Sublime Way, and the aeons of being locked away only allowed you to further one your mastery of self.
>>
Rolled 81

>>22839224
First things first, stand up, check how our body feels, give our weapon a few test swings to get the balance of it. If we're not wearing a helmet and one is available put that on.

Then check our surroundings and move quietly towards the noise, there's almost certainly killing to be done.

Personally I prefer consensus over rolling to see who is selected, combining options if possible, and rolling for the efficacy of actions when it is needed.

Well, fucked that roll up
>>
>>22839239
You push yourself up. The world is a grey blur for a moment and you almost pass out. But your vision clears and you see that you are standing in a stone corridor. Several slain warriors lie nearby.

Following your instincts, you seize the nearest blade and stagger towards the sounds of battle. You long to kill again... wait, weren't you a hero? You feel so confused. Maybe things will be clearer when you reach the fray.

You heave open the double doorway at the end of the corridor. A great hall is before you. In the center, a handful of adventurers fight for their lives against a horde of uniformed guards. Xaraxxes watches with amusement from his throne. The mage-lord looks up at you and smiles.

What do you do?

At the sight of your arch-enemy, your blood boils. You give a howl of rage and charge heedlessly towards him. Of course, the most direct route to Xaraxxes takes you through the heart of the fighting. The guardsmen you barge into look up in confusion, then pull back to let you pass.

As you close in, one of the adventurers, a brawny youth with the weathered hide of a southern barbarian, sees you and cries out in horror.

"No... you're dead, I struck you down!"

Xaraxxes' laughter rings out over the fray.

>>
>>22839510
>>22839454
Pretty much why I rolled for this.
>>
>>22839510
We're already charging wildly into combat with sword drawn, with the guy who ALREADY killed the body we now inhabit standing between us and our goal.

Might as well go full beserker; ain't no time for chit chat when there's a battle and a dickish mage in the room.
>>
Sorry for delay, internet issues. Also, while I didn't specify before, ya'll should roll openly if you want me to count it.

>>22839454
There are five adventurers still on their feet. The barbarian youth who wields a great mace, two older men (brothers, by the look of them) clad in good sailor's clothes and armed with swords, a stern, bearded fellow in chainmail also wielding a sword, and a brawny woman who fights with a staff. Perhaps more of them lie dead, there are certainly enough dead guards.

You notice that your own armour is much like that worn by Xaraxxes' soldiers. Hmm.

The mage-lord's throne is on a raised dais. He looks much as he did last you saw him - slim, dark-haired and handsome enough in an oily way. Xaraxxes licks his lips in anticipation as he watches you.

It actually doesn't matter, if you roll a die that is lower than 100 you lower your chances of it getting chosen, if you roll one that is higher than a d100 you either will have the same result spread as a d100 or your roll will be disregarded as being over 100.

>>22839820
Yes. But now it only shows the addition if you're rolling more than 1 die. Don't ask my why.
>>
>>22839712
Too slow, but as that's compatible with the highest of the first three...

>>22839703
You linger for a moment longer, to meet Xaraxxes' gaze. The mage's expression turns quizzical, then confused as you lick your lips. As you start shoving your way through the melee towards the throne, Xaraxxes cries out in alarm. "Stop him! Stop Artem!"

This causes havoc. The first guard who tries to seize you gets a broken nose for his troubles and slumps to the ground. The second fares worse - one of the sailors runs him through. You pay little attention to all of this.

Xaraxxes must die.

Finally you are out of the throng and charging up the stairs. The mage-lord has composed himself and drawn his glowing sword. As he takes up a guard he chuckles. "I knew you'd try it some day, but is this really the right moment? They'll kill whoever survives."

"You assume that I give a fuck. I'll happily die and go to hell as long as I can drag you down with me."

You accompany the verbal barb by kicking a stray shield at Xeraxxes' head. He ducks under the improvised missile and dashes forward to meet you at the edge of the dais. As your blades clash for the first time, it's clear that you're stronger than the mage - but he is a master swordsman.

Last time you fought, he killed you. How are you going to win this time?
>>
Rolled 91

You decide to get in close to take advantage of your superior might.

Xeraxxes is no rookie. When he cannot ward you off with his glowing blade, his footwork keeps him out of reach. You managed to get on to the dais, robbing him of the high ground.

"No explanation, Artem? I suppose that blow to the head has addled your wits."

You don't care. You're almost certain that's not your name, anyway. If you can just get close to him, you can overpower the mage. How do you create an opening?

To hell with it. You go through another exchange, this time letting him lay open your thigh. But that gives you the option to do something really stupid. You grab his blade with your left hand.

It's wickedly sharp. While your gauntlet does enough to keep Xaraxxes from just shredding your hand with a flick of his wrist, you're now bleeding from a third site. But the mage's attempt to free the blade is opening enough. You drop your own sword and land a right hook on Xaraxxes' jaw, knocking him to the ground.

Your mutilated left hand spasms uncontrollably and the other blade clatters to the ground. Your enemy is floored. What now?

You know you should be stronger than this. But you were wounded when you awoke, and the fight with the mage-lord was tough. Your arm trembles, then succumbs to her strength. The woman's fingers close around your throat. You close your eyes, knowing that you'll go to your reward soon.

A man's voice interjects. "Hold up..." the rest blurs in your fading hearing, then you feel the woman's grip ease. You cough and splutter and breathe again.

Looking up, the barbarian youth is restraining the woman. She is very unhappy about this, but isn't struggling.

Later he learned to love adventuring and meeting new peoples and cultures and thus his story began.
>>
>>22840980
4 Monks smashed his noodle shop. He used most of his income from that to pay for his sister's tuition. Now she has an excuse to go adventuring off, because that's what she wanted in the first place, instead of some lame education. Depressed he went to a shady bar to lighten his mood with some drinks. Came across a rich mob-type guy. Tried to bet with him to get money out of that guy to pay for repairs, to return everything back to normal and make his sister come home. He lost and the mobster with his twisted sense of humor made the guy join the Paladin academy (whatever). So then, he figures he might as well go join his sister on her adventures.

Most of the time it includes a rigid code of honour, usually from a higher power (religion, knightly order, royalty, etc), otherwise you are just a warrior.

While I accept this funny origin, the end result is to be a full knight.

>There were a lot of ideas floating around but not much consensus. I've tried to use most of what was there.

While many of your faith made their living by catering to the decadent pleasures of the nobility, your family were poor innkeepers in the worst part of town. Food, drink, and the occasional small loan - that was the trade of your father.

As a child, you didn't feel moral outrage at such a small man as your father being condemned as a usurer. Children do not need a reason to be horrified when evil is done to their parents. But when the childhood wound had healed, the young man was left with a scar called "injustice".

For a few years, you and your older sister just lived rough. You stole food or begged for it, lived in rags, and scarcely had a warm night. Eventually you were "apprenticed" by an old rogue who prized those quiet little feet and thieving hands. Being on the wrong side of the law as a youth taught you a lot. Most of it you don't care to use. The best lesson was that most criminals are petty, desperate souls who need help more than punishment. And for your own part, once you were wearing proper clothes and eating properly... the life of a criminal didn't sit right. But what was your alternative?

>>22841380

>>22841398
>I'll take that as a cue.

You are roused from your reminiscence by strong hands bearing you to your feet. The rest of the adventurers seem to have delegated the barbarian to look after you. Hopefully his sense of honour is deep-rooted.

You do your best to walk on your own, but with the wound to your leg it's too hard. Before you collapse, your captor wordlessly hoists you over his shoulders. It's not hard to see how he bested Artem.

The journey out of Xaraxxes' keep is a blur. Your head still aches and you can't quite shake the idea that this body is still entirely dead and being dragged around by your spirit. But it feels like your heart is beating. That wouldn't happen if you were dead. Would it?

Eventually, the adventurers settle down to rest. The youth puts you down gently, then scratches at the beginnings of a beard.

"I will take off your gag so you can eat and drink. Any trickery, and Zia" he indicates the woman with a jerk of his head "will finish you off."

How do you respond? (If you are going to nod, then you might as well tell me what you say to the barbarian, too.)

The question dies between the two of you. "You really can't remember, can you?" He shrugs. "I am Brechulf. You did me no wrong personally, though you guarded a wicked man until I knocked some sense into you. Zia was born as one of Xaraxxes' slaves, and you killed her mother as they escaped."

"I don't think she's forgiven you."
>>
>>22842002

"I can see that."

Ask where are they going.
>>
>>22842002
"All right. Well, then. Let me tell you a somewhat fantastical story, then."

"Once, there was the greatest hero of the land. A knight most powerful, most dedicated, who rose up from humble beginnings to bring light and justice to the people. Then he went up against his arch-enemy, the mage-lord Xaraxxes."

"He killed that man."

"But Xaraxxes didn't just slay that knight and be done with it. He wanted to torture me and gloat. So he stuck that spirit in one of his magical gems instead of letting him pass to that righteous reward awaiting him in the afterlife."

"Xaraxxes under-estimated that man. For years, he waited inside the gem, enduring the cackling spellcaster's attempts to break and demoralize the knight. In time his visits came more and more seldom, until finally he forgot all about that soul, locked inside a gem, lost on the pile of treasure."

"And then, that knight found himself awake, suddenly, able to move, to breathe, to LIVE once more. And he sees his greatest foe on the throne, and a battle nearby. And, that knight jumps into battle once more, not knowing what the fuck is going on, goes to mangle his hand just to disarm his greatest foe, not even really caring if he gets struck down again, because hey, he's died once already."

"And, now Xaraxxes is dead, and that knight finds himself here, in someone else's body, and people looking at him pretty damn weirdly."

"It's a funny tale, no?"

>>
>>22842175
We're bleeding out, horribly mutilated, and in the company of at least one person that wants this body destroyed, a few succinct sentences is probably the best way to do it, and even is he isn't dead, that might just be something that makes them stop and think for a second.

To be clear (another anon was wondering, too), Artem's body is beat up but probably not close to death. You've taken some head wound, another belt to the head from Zia, a light wound to the left shoulder, a moderate wound to the right thigh, and your left hand is badly cut - perhaps to the bone - on the palm and fingers. None of these are bleeding too much at the moment, but they could do with being cleaned.

He hit us in the head, see first post. We are at least also wounded in the leg and left hand, and possibly the shoulder.

I'm imaging any talking we do will be between long, ragged breath as our body shuts down from bloodloss, possibly coughing up blood in the middle of sentences, I don't think we'll be talking quite eloquently.

>>
>>22842328

>>
We should probably check or have them check our body for the gem to see if we are attached to it (and see if the body dies without the gem and we return). This would also prove that we aren't messing with them.
>>
>>22842076
Brechulf sits silently as you tell your story. He does not laugh at the end.

"I told you, no tricks." He picks up the gag, then sighs. "Have you had enough water? Can you stomach some food?"

That does sound pretty good. Do you want to try any more stories or questions, or just be glad he's not turning you over to Zia?

"I would like something to eat, please."

Brechulf feeds you a couple of slices of cheese and some fresh berries. He explains that he's worried about your teeth after those blows to the head.

>>22842522
"A drink, and if you can spare the water, please wash my wounds."

He nods and helps you quench your thirst, before cleaning your wounds. You're relieved that it doesn't take him too much time to deal with your head - though if Brechulf hit you with his mace, it probably didn't break the skin that much.

It's not so comforting to hear the breath sucked past his teeth when he looks at your left hand. "These are deep. Your hand may never fully recover."

an acceptable price for killing our nemesis

"I don't mind, it's good to be alive, isn't it?"

Time for small chat, we can learn some things about the world right now.
>>
>>22842625
"Eh. Once you have been tortured for what seems like centuries and you start to fear you have been bodiless for an eternity, feeling something like this is pretty trivial."
"Hm. If it's going to get infected, we might need to cut it off."

"A hand is a small price to pay to rid the world of evil such as he.

'Sides, not my hand anyway."

"Eh, I'm glad to just be alive again. And I would have payed a thousand times the price of one hand to smash Xaraxxes' head into the floor. All things considering, not a bad bargain. Also, apropos of nothing, I would like to meet someone who deals with dead spirits, before I get killed again."

We should definitely try to find out about our sister; if nothing else, have one of 'em take a message to her after they kill us.

"I don't mind, it's good to be alive, isn't it?"

Brechulf is quiet for a moment. Then he sighs again and comes back into view. "Listen," he says, putting a hand on your good shoulder for emphasis, "don't try to befriend me. If you keep your bond as prisoner, I will keep you safe and even speak to your deeds in any trial. My honour demands that. But I cannot be a friend of a man such as you. My honour demands this, too."

He's trying to look grave and serious, but in an odd way the expression just makes him look young and vulnerable. You wonder if Brechulf's companions ever look past his mighty sinews to his youthful heart.

Laugh at his youth, laugh at being alive.

"We're going to get along, whether you want or not, young warrior. Maybe not for long, but we will."
>>
>>22842791

Smile at his words.

"Living by your code I see, I can respect that. You'll attain great thing, Brechulf."

"Oh, and about the hand, should we cut it off if it's useless?"
>>
Just gonna put this idea out there but we should probably just leave if we get a chance and find out our past by ourselves since these adventurers are taking us to be executed in a lawful and fair manner.

"Look, son. You don't get it, do you? I don't really care about what happens next. I've *won*. My enemy's dead, and the land's going to be a damn site more peaceful. If you manage to bring me to the trial they'll prove who I say I am, or they'll take me out back and kill me, and I'll go off to my afterlife that I was delayed from three years back. Hell, you could cut my head off right now and I'd go with a smile."

Pause, gesture. "Still, I wouldn't mind someone to tell my sister something. Assuming she's still alive."

No, i meant for our hero to say this out loud to Brechulf

"You are too young to wear a look like that. But I understand. If the hand is useless, shouldn't you cut it off?"

Brechulf lets you judgment of him go and focuses on the practical question. "I'm not sure how bad it is. The wound isn't hot, so it's not making you sick. Your thumb isn't bad. Even if the fingers and palm end up stiff, its still more use than a stump."

"Now, I need to see to my own needs." He gags you and walks away. You notice that Zia is staring out you. Surprisingly, she doesn't appear to be planning your death...

Because you didn't think of it, or because you're not starting part one tonight?
