You are Squadron Leader Scarlet Harrison of the RCAF, and you are staring down at a terrified looking little Russian girl by the name of Ekaterina Valnikov.

The top of her head doesn't even reach your shoulders, making her shorter than even Riley and Woody who are standing behind you. You can't quite place it, but there's something weird about the way she's standing. Her long black hair is straightened and shiny, obviously something she takes good care of. She stares up at you with glistening crimson eyes, looking, for all intents, as if you were getting ready to take her life. You've heard of witches having particularly vibrant hair and eye colours if there is a strong flow of magic in their blood. At least, that was what you were told about your own hair.

After an awkward beat, you decide to ask her Vasilika's whereabouts and whether or not she'll be back any time soon.

“Th-the Capitan,” she stutters, looking on the verge of tears as she forces the words out, “i-is ma-making the sh-showers now.” Her English isn't all that great, it seems. She takes a deep, relieved breath as she finishes, probably glad that she got through it without screwing up. You hear Riley start to giggle at her accent behind you, followed by a light thud and a groan. Nice work, Woody.

The two of you stand their for several agonizing seconds before you deign to ask her if you can come inside and wait for Vasilika. She nods rather quickly, never daring to take her eyes off of you. Dear god, who let the scared little kid answer the door? Seriously.

As the little girl, Ekaterina, turns to lead you in, you finally notice why her poise was so odd. Strapped to her back is an enormous sword, the same kind as Vasilika's. Exactly the same kind, actually. Whereas Vasilika's looked only slightly unwieldy on her back, the one on this girl just looks plain silly. It's at least as tall as she is and the tip of the scabbard drags along the ground as she walks, creating a constant low hum while she leads you through the halls. It's... kind of adorable, actually. As she leads you in, it gets caught on a loose floorboard every now and then, making her stumble and let out a little squeak of surprise every time.

A few stumbles and a very near fall later, your posse arrives at the living room. You take a seat on one of the two couches, flanked by your two minio- subordinates, while Ekaterina removes her sword and sits on the opposite couch, clutching her sword so close she may as well be hugging the thing. In the silence, you can hear the dull thrumming of the shower running in the distance, as well as what sounds like orchestral music of some kind from elsewhere in the house. An awkward moment passes in silence. Then another. And another...

“So, um,” Woody with the save! So reliable and responsible, that one. “where are you from, um, Miss Valnikov.”

The little Russian's eyes shoot open at the sudden attention and she mumbles for a few seconds before the word actually comes out. “S-Sibir.”

“Never heard of it!” Riley shouts. Oh god damn it, Bong don't... “How's the weather there?”

Ekaterina stares at her hands and blinks a few times. "Cold. Is always cold.”

Riley gives a weak “Ah.” before promptly looking off in some random direction. And so the awkward silence returns...

She seems rather attached to her gigantic blade, and if you know one thing, it's that the best way to start a conversation is to ask about the other person's interests. It looks like a nice sword, sure enough, but isn't it a bit big for her?

“I-is tradition.” She mumbles, squeezing her little fingers tighter around the leather scabbard. “All Angels ha-have one. I,” she swallows and blushes slightly, “I love mine.”

Riley brightens up considerably hearing this. “Oh hey! I have a sword too!” The little American gets up, showing off the blade slung across her waist samurai-style (no doubt learned from Ayaka). It's more of an enormous punching dagger than a sword, but it kills mini-walkers real good. “I'll show you mine if you show me yours!” Riley yelps, causing Woody to blush ever so slightly.

Ekaterina nods quietly and gets up, and the two meet in the middle of the room. It takes a few seconds of flustered thinking, but she manages to hand over the zweihander without another word as the punching sword is quickly shoved into her hands.

“Gosh!” Riley gasps, giving the Russian sword a few experimental swings and nearly knocking over a few light fixtures while she's at it. “It's a bit heavier than mine, but it's really nice!” She turns to you. “Hey Scarlet, can I have one like this?”

Haha. No.

“Aww...” Riley turns her attention back to Ekaterina. “Whaddaya think of mine? The ground crew made it for me.”

The Russian witch doesn't seem to know exactly what to do with the thing, and has barely even taken it out of the sheathe. “The blade is nice. S-strong. But I mu-much prefer mine. May I ha-have it back now?”

“Eeeeeh? But I wanted to play with it more!” Bong whines, giving it a few more swings.

Ekaterina seems to be getting rather anxious without her sword, probably also afraid that Riley will break something. You tell her to give it back and Woody seems to nod in agreement. She must be feeling a bit left out...

The two young witches sit back down again and the silence returns, albeit with Riley looking a bit happier and Ekaterina seeming ever so slightly less afraid of your posse. Maybe she'll be more open to something else...

Yesterday you got rather fucked up on vodka and Kraft Dinner, so if you were told anything that evening, you really don't remember much of it. It's probably in your best interests to get that out of the way right now.

“Um, well,” Ekaterina looks down again, her words barely audible, “there are six . I am smallest, er, smallest age. The Capitan and Vladislava fought before green men. Against Ge-Germans.”

It might be a smart idea to keep Johanna away from these folk. Just as a precaution.

“The two of them were choose by the premier himself.” She brings her little hands together on her sword, rubbing them together absent-mindedly. “The rest of us were choose by the Capitan.”

So they're an elite unit or something?

“We are told this, yes.” Ekaterina nods and makes a weak smile, blushing slightly. “Best of best. Pride of Motherland. Is why our strikers are red painted.”

Red like your own strikers. And your hair. It's a nice colour.

The little Russian nods some more, still looking down. “I-is a very pretty colour” She mumbles. You could swear she turned a bit more red as she spoke.

Just as you're about to ask her if she's tried your Kraft Dinner yet, you hear the dull sound of the shower cease and a light thudding of foot steps heading in your direction. Vasilika appears in the doorway, wearing nought but a loose sports bra, panties and a towel slung over her shoulder. You can't help but notice that her abdomen is rather... well muscled.

“Ah! Comrade Scarlet!” She greets you, beaming. “I did not expect to see you again so soon! Is true what they say about your people! So friendly!”

Yeah, well. Nothing better to do. Besides, you've still got things to ask.

“As do I, as do I.” Vasilika turns to Ekaterina and barks something at her in Russian. The little girl nods weakly and gets up to leave.

Oh man. You didn't get her in trouble did you?

“Oh no no! I simply asked her to make us some of the Kraft Dinners.” Vasilika gives you a big, toothy grin. “Oksana and Vlad taught her to make for breakfast. Is very good foods! You must bring us more!”

Woody offers to help, taking Riley along with her and leaving you alone with the buxom blonde tank witch.

Some how your eyes keep getting drawn to Vasilika's stomach. So nice and firm looking... Maybe you could touch the- NO. NO SCARLET. STOP IT. You manage to pull you gaze away and give her a quick “Nice abs. You work out?”

She gives you a slightly more sly grin, you'd almost call it seductive if you didn't know any better. “Thank you, comrade. We spend many hours training each day. Running, target practice, the usual. You do not do the same?”

Well... no. You can't actually recall the last time you did real, strenuous training. You might need to start doing that...

“Is shame.” Vasilika shrugs and leans back, placing her elbows on the arm rests, leaving her stomach in full view. She knows. “So what did you want to talk about? Or did you just come to do the... how you say, 'hanging out'?”

Lovely abs aside, what you're really curious about is that huge striker you saw her piloting. It was like nothing you've ever seen before.

Vasilika nods and smirks at you. “Ah yes, the Iosef Stalin striker. IS for short. I was wondering when you would ask. It is a prototype. Brand new. Largest and most powerful striker in the world right now. Has one hundred twenty-two millimeter cannon. Good for killing the green things.”

Sounds fancy, but you imagine it would have trouble in smaller spaces.

“Yes,” she concedes, tilting her head a bit, “is necessary flaw. Can not put big gun and armor on little striker. I keep T-34 striker just in case.I could show you later, if you'd like.”

Maybe, maybe. As you're pondering the offer, a great cacophony of crashing and little girl squeaks sound off from the kitchen. Vasilika winces. You call out to see if the girls are okay.

Yeah. Fine your ass. You give Vasilika quick nod in the direction of the kitchen and the two of you leave to investigate. Christ, Bong, what did you do this ti-

But as you enter the kitchen, you notice that Riley is sitting down looking surprisingly unscathed. On the other hand, Ekaterina appears to be covered in a white powder and verging on tears while Woody is helping clean it off. The floor is covered the little noodles along with cheese powder, giving you that terrible crunchy feeling every time your thin uniform shoes step on one. Vasilika stands outside, careful not to step on a noodle with her bare feet, and motions for Ekaterina to step forward.

The little, black-haired Russian saunters up, head hanging low. After a few quiet words in Russian, Vasilika looks up at your two girls before looking back down at Ekaterina. A heavy silence fills the air as Vasilika presumably decides her fate.

Whoa, hey, so what actually happened? No one's said a word to you yet.

“I- I-I,” the little Russian stutters, looking as though she's about to cry, “I tri-tripped.”

The Kraft Dinner is destroyed, sure. But you can't help but take pity on the little girl. Vasilika looks right royally pissed off and you're not exactly sure what she intends to do with the poor thing. If you intend to help her, you need to act now.

You decide the best course of action is to remove Vasilika from the premises before she can rain anger and rage upon the poor little Russian.

“Eh, no biggie.” You laugh. You shift your gaze from the terrified Russian to the angry Russian. “Why don't we just leave them to clean up their own mess, eh?”

Vasilika blinks several times. You manage to use just the right tone and words to have your way without actually over-stepping her authority. “I... yes. I suppose.”

You smile at Ekaterina and apply your palm to the top of her head, giving her hair a good tousling. She looks up at you, still a bit scared but clearly happy and nods, inadvertently - or perhaps intentionally - making you pat her head even more. A shower of pale orange powder erupts from her head as you do so. Man, she is going to be cheesy for days.

After a sufficient hair-ruffling, you usher Vasilika out the door and flash Ekaterina a thumbs up behind your back. You make sure to tell Vasilika just how adorable the little Siberian is.

“She is not supposed to be adorable, comrade.” Vasilika scowls. “She is supposed to be the pride of the Motherland. She's so... What I wish to say is, I only wish I knew what she was like on base when I picked her. She is not what her combat record tells...”

So what was she like in combat then? She doesn't exactly seem the type to be hand-picked for an elite unit like the Angels.

“No... No, she is not the type for that at all.” Vasilika sighs and takes a seat on the couch again, slouching over with her head in her hands. You retake your seat across from her. “She is, what is the word... a berserker. There many ways to be a good fighter. Some have smarts. Some are quick. Some are lucky. Others... are just insane. They laugh in the face of death and are unpredictable. Useful. Her talents are nothing special... but the way she fights... She was born to kill.”

And at base she's a meek little kid.

“Exactly. Let my error be a lesson, comrade.” She shakes her head, looking somewhat ashamed. “Combat abilities say nothing for character. Even your girls. The little one. Riley, yes? She is the one who shot down the dreadnought. Is surprising.”

You give her a quiet nod. Little girls can be good fighters, but rarely are they good soldiers. Hell, if she doesn't want her, you'll take her. Not like you aren't used to awkward little girls (you used to be one, after all).

“Hah!” Vasilika slaps her leg and barks a short laugh. “Is fat chance! Puppy dogs eyes come in handy sometimes! You may not notice, but the rest of us aren't so cute! But you remind me of something Vlad asked. About having her make friends. Perhaps we should arrange, eh, how you say, play-dates for your little ones and ours?”

That's... not a bad idea, actually. Yeah, that could work.

“Good, good.” Vasilika smiles, her anger seemingly abated for the time being. “They could do the... what is word... sleep together!”

Oh. That. Not... Okay. Yeah. You could arrange that. You'll have to talk to them about that later. The two of you spend a little while getting over your giggles and slowly regain composure.

“You are not so bad, comrade Scarlet.”

For once in your life, you actually decide to broach the serious issue: How the Angels and Demons can work together. Right now the forces seem split between holding off the Martian advance on the western side of the island and the push up to Comox, your old base.

Vasilika nods, pondering. “Your commander brought this up yesterday. I must admit, I was more focused on getting to know our new comrades than, how you say, 'talking shop'. Unfortunately, it must be done eventually.”

Maybe you should arrange another meeting between Vasilika and the higher-ups in your squadron. You still have no idea what Minnie is planning to do now that she's around. For now, maybe it'd be best to keep it simple. Do some training together, drills, that sort of thing.

“Yes, yes. That sounds agreeable.” The Russian nods again. “We wake up to train at four hundred. You will join us then?”

What. You... you don't even need to get up until three hours after that.

“Is not good for you, comrade. Perhaps we can set a time later in the day?”

Sounds fine. You offer to do it right after lunch. Vasilika thinks for a moment before giving another nod. “Work off all the food you eat. I like it.”

You spend the next few minutes discussing how the lines are set up, deployment of forces, what would make good targets. The two of you can't really decide much by yourselves, but at least you can understand the war better with someone else to talk about it with. You really need to arrange that meeting with Rose, and maybe General Potts, the island's ranking general officer.

“Say,” Vasilika starts, “how about we leave the young ones to bond for a bit longer? I could introduce you to some others and maybe give you a tour of the house, or maybe show you our strikers like I promised. Whatever you'd like.”

Might as well go see those tank strikers. Need to assess their capabilities and other war stuff that responsible people do. Whatever happened to the days when you were just a hotshot who didn't have to care about anyone but her squad-mates? You shout out to Woody that the little 'uns will have to look after themselves while you're out.

“Sure thing!” Woody cheery voice calls out. That kid needs a promotion...

“P-Please come again!” A high-pitched, Russian-accented voice adds. Hrnk.

You make sure to tell her that you will, and they're free to your share of the KD. Woody and Riley need to be back at the base by noon or they'll be running laps around it.

Vasilika smirks at you and lets out a short chuckle. “Is good for subordinates to love and fear you, yes?”

Your thoughts exactly.

The motor pool where the tank strikers are kept is, thankfully, on the edge of the base closest to the Angels' quarters. Vasilika holds up a hand as you approach the side door, stopping you.

“Vlad should be around here somewhere. I will go find her. Feel free to wait inside for me.” She pauses as she's about to let you go as a sudden thought hits her. “If anyone tells you to leave, just mention that you're waiting for me.”

You give her a quiet nod, which she returns, and she unlocks the door for you.

The interior looks fairly similar to your hangar. The strikers are lined up against the north wall while the east is covered in shelves filled with equipment and the west is occupied by the enormous steel garage door.

There are seven strikers in total: the enormous IS striker, standing at least twice your height, three slightly smaller ones, one of which appears to have enormous arms in place of a gun, and three that are not much bigger than your own.

You can probably sneak a peek at one of them before Vasilika gets back...

As if it's even a question. You want to see the big one. The IS.

You cautiously step up to the hulking crimson behemoth, trying to make as little noise as possible. You're not really afraid of being caught, but it would feel wrong to disturb the silence. The IS is truly an amazing sight from the ground. The legs are at least as tall as you are and a fairly large machine gun protrudes from one of the knees.

The right arm contains the cannon and a hand-hold for the witch to position it with. The gun is like nothing you've ever seen before. It could tear through the martians like nothing, or so you'd assume.

The left arm is nothing more than a gigantic slab of steel emblazoned with the hammer and sickle. From the looks of it, it's just as much a weapon as it is a back-up shield.

It's... astounding. You doubt even the German's Tiger strikers are this big. Maybe they'll have to cook up something to counter it with. Wow...

After a few moments of gawking, you hear Vasilika's foot steps approach from behind. Without looking back, you call out to her. There is no answer. You call her name. Nothing. Slowly, you turn around to meet the other person.

What you are met with is a bald, clean shaven and utterly emotionless looking Slavic man. Atop his head is a little beret with what you can only assume is the emblem of the Soviet engineer corps or whatever it is they have. In his arms he hold a large, boxy object that looks oddly similar to an accordion that you recognize as a magic measuring device for working on strikers.

He stares at you. His gaze bores through your very soul. Nothing on his face belies what he is thinking.

You could really use Vasilika right now.

You stare right back. You give NO FUCKS. He is NOT VASILIKA.

The man never seems to blink as you take part in your eerie staring contest. Either that or he manages to time it perfectly with your own blinks. You're not entirely sure which is creepier.

After some time he opens his mouth and utters a single word: “Remove.”

Wha-

“REMOVE SELF.” He shouts, somehow maintaining his emotionless demeanour all the while.

But-

“REMOVE SELF FROM PREMISES.”

But Vasilika said!

“REMOVE SELF.”

Vasilika, accompanied by the small, pale haired witch you recognize as Vladislava, jogs up to you just in time to bail you out of this strange mess. Vladislava pulls him aside and the two engage rather short, loud words. Neither of them appear to be people of many words. Somewhere along the way, Vasilika seems to have acquired her uniform jacket. You suddenly realize that she walked all the way to the motor pool in her skivvies. In March. Russians...

“Apologies, comrade!” Vasilika says, doing a little begging motion. “I see you have met our crew chief, Remov. His English is... not so good. I see you were interested in my IS.”

Yeah, well, it is pretty cool. You've got to admit.

“Hah! Perhaps I will let you try it out some day.” Vasilika smirks. “I suppose that is one way to get into my pants.”

Har de har har. It's about time you actually got around to checking these things out.

“Yes, yes!” Vasilika grins. “Let's see. You have already heard so much about my own striker. Let us look at the others. These,” she points at the smallest set, “belong to Ekaterina and Anastasia. One pair also belongs to myself. Based on the T-34 tank. Strong, reliable, balanced. Better for mobility and getting close. Has fifty-seven millimetre cannon. Good for the little walkers.”

“These ones,” she moves over to the larger sets, “are the heavy strikers. Based on the Kliment Voroshilov tank. KV if you wish. The regular ones belong to the twins, Oksana and Yuliya. The funny one belongs to Vlad.”

The funny one... the one with the weird arms. You've never seen anything like that either.

“Experimental design. For support role. Can also take regular seventy-six millimetre cannon if needed. But, here's is best part.” she leads you to the opposite side of the garage and points to two gigantic pipes. “One hundred fifty-two millimetre mortar attachment. For when you need that extra BOOM! Only problem is that the twins can't move when they use it and Vlad needs to help them assemble and load it. Is, how you say, 'cool', yes?”

Yeah, cool. But you still can't fly in them.

“Yet.” Vasilika replies.

Haha. Funny. She... she's joking, right?

Hearing your reaction, Vasilika can't help but burst into laughter yet again. “Oh, comrade! You are a funny one!”

Yeah, sure. You wonder what kind of speeds they can hit and how manoeuvrable they are.

“Straight to business, eh?” She ponders for a moment, tapping her chin with her finger. “The bigger ones can reach thirty kilometres an hour in good conditions, maybe a little more. Though, we rarely have good conditions. The smaller ones get to about fifty in the same. Maneuvrable, eh... Well, we can always switch on the hover function just in case, but overall they are better than tanks, I think.”

Sounds mighty useful.

“Very. But the faster ones can make the witches a bit eager.” Vasilika cringes slightly. “Yesterday Anastasia tried to squeeze between a building and a tank and ended up scratching her paint. Remov's men only just finished fixing it.”

They actually keep red paint on hand?

“Oh yes, of course.” The blonde Russian smiles. “We must always have some on hand in case of accidents.”

Vladislava saunters up to you and sighs. “Good morning, Scarlet.” She grumbles. “Remov says you must leave. I tried to talk him out of it, but he will not have.”

Maaaan.

“I suppose we can not argue.” Vasilika shrugs. “His garage, his rules. Shall we head back to our home? Or will you leaving us now?"

As much as you'd love to continue your vodka and macaroni fuelled adventures with the Angels, you really ought to get back. You might be needed for something. Maybe.

“Ah, that is shame. You are fun person, comrade Scarlet.” Vasilika gives you a sly grin. You're beginning to dread when she does that. “Perhaps next time you can show me your own equipment, eh?”

Vladislava reaches up and gives Vasilika a good smack on the head.

“It was joke!” Vasilika laughs. “I meant her strikers! Really!”

As you turn to leave, you hear the sounds Vasilika bickering at Vladislava in Russian, who makes short, poignant replies. Yeah, they seem like good people. Not nearly as suspicious as you initially thought.

As you make your way back to your building, you ponder the situation with Ekaterina. A sleep-over is something normal girls her age would do. You never really had a chance to do that since you already shared a room with Rose at the academy, but it sounds like it might be fun. Of course, she'd be staying with Woody or Riley and not you.

The building seems rather quiet when you arrive, much like it always is. The only person occupying the front common room is once again Johanna, reading the same book as yesterday.

“Good morning, Scarlet.” She greets you, smiling brightly. “You are certainly up and about early.”

Might as well spend some time with Johanna.

She's a bit surprised when you plop down in the seat next to her and lets out a little yelp as she bounces on the cushions.

“O-oh my.” She giggles a bit as you settle into place. “I notice you didn't bring any of your macaroni this time.”

Haha, yeah... That... Hah...

She smiles and places her book on the stand next to her, shifting a bit on the couch. “So what were you doing out so early?”

Hung out with Russians. Diplomacy. Learned about their strikers. Learned about them. Responsible stuff.

“I must say, I'm a bit surprised.” Johanna gives you a look you can't quite place. Amused? Teasing? Who knows. “I didn't think you were so proactive.”

Yeah, well. Strange times you live in. You might as well ask if anything has been going on while you were gone.

“Hm.” She scrunches up her brow for a moment to think. “Rose wanted to see you later today. Sammy, Buzz and Kate won't leave that pilot friend of yours alone. The other man, Nathan was it? He seems to be good at staying unnoticed.”

Good, good.

“Perhaps I should go and meet these Russians myself. They seem to be nice people. Woody and Riley came in earlier with one of them. They wanted to play board games, or so they said.”

Ah, good. The little ones are back. And... shit. Johanna wants to meet the Russians? Didn't Vasilika and Vlad fight the Germans before the Martians came? But Johanna is still rather tender about her time before that happened...

Shit... you really should tell her. Vlad seems cool enough, but Vasilika... well, you saw how she almost snapped at Ekaterina for spilling some Kraft Dinner. You don't want to know how she'd react at seeing a former enemy, even if said former enemy only served in France and not Russia.

“Yeah, they're good people.” You nod, quietly. “A little rough around the edges, but good.”

Johanna blinks. “Scarlet? Is something wrong?”

“It's just...” You take a deep breath. Gotta stay tactful about this. “Two of them were active before Black Saturday. The CO and her XO.”

“O-oh.” She whispers so quietly you can barely understand it. “I see.”

“I'm sorry.” You mumble. “They're good people. Just like you are. But they don't seem like the understanding types.”

She nods silently, staring down into her lap. You aren't really sure what to say at this point. She seems to get what you're trying to say, so anything more might just be rubbing salt in the wounds.

Out of the corner of your eye you see a shimmering tear drop from her face under her hair. Shit...

Quietly, you wrap an arm around her shoulders and pull her in. She doesn't resist, instead rest her head on your shoulder. Somehow, you don't feel as excited as you'd expect from having her warm body pressed up against you.

You slowly rub her shoulder a bit more and pull her a little closer. There's not a whole lot you can do, but maybe... Maybe you could talk to Vasilika about it? Your plans for cooperation kinda go down the drain if they won't fight alongside Johanna.

Johanna sniffles and nods. “I-If you think it would help.”

It's worth a shot. What's the worst that could happen?

“What if they hate you because of me?” She mumbles. “My people fought theirs. I didn't, of course, but I still KILLED people, Scarlet! Fellow witches, even! If the martians hadn't come, I could have killed you! You could have ki-”

You squeeze her even tighter. If that's the case, then you should really be thanking the Squids, shouldn't you?

She lets out a short giggle at this and shoves her head further into your shoulder. “I guess we should.”

You can feel every hiccup and sniffle through her body, pressed together as you are. You haven't really known all that many people who fought before the squids came. Wendy, your old CO. Minnie. Everyone else you know who was around back then was either stationed at home or somewhere without fighting. Right now, Johanna is the only person in the wing who knows what it feels like to take a human life. It's not an easy thought to swallow, but it's the truth.

Somewhere in your silent thoughts, she manages to wrap her arms around your waist, holding you tight. “Thank you.” She mumbles. “For everything.”

You sit there together, holding each other for a long, long while before Johanna looks up. Her eyes are bloodshot and twin streaks run down both cheeks. “That... I'm sorry. I really shouldn't keep you.” She lets you go, rather reluctantly, and straightens her uniform. “If I was not such a mess, I would quite like to ask you out to lunch. Perhaps tomorrow instead?”

You give a quiet nod. Going out to lunch with Johanna. Yeah. That'd be nice. Just two friends having lunch, right?

“What else would it be?” She gives you a look. The kind of look that you'd usually follow with SHE KNOWS. Except you're not sure what SHE KNOWS.

Tomorrow. Lunch. Johanna. Alone. Yeah, sounds like fun. Just two girls having lunch together. Not weird.

“Scarlet, are you okay?” She asks, voice somewhere between concern and teasing.

What? Yeah. Why wouldn't you be?

“You had a strange look on your face.” She mumbles, twiddling her thumbs. “It was a bit disturbing.”

Yeah. You're fine. But you, uh, have other stuff to do. Like check on Rick! And arrange that meeting with Rose! And responsible person stuff!

“Don't forget!” Johanna calls out as you leave. “Tomorrow at noon! We shall meet in this room!”

As soon as you leave the room, you feel that look return to your face. A really big, stupid smile. Today is going to be a good day.

March 23, 1943. Alberni, Vancouver Island

With the Colossus preoccupied with the witch reinforcements, the contemporary units could focus on the smaller machines that swarmed from its body. The smaller walkers, while clumsy on flat, open ground, were deadly in the narrow streets among the high buildings of the city. Slinging from the tops of buildings, and along the telephone and light poles, they were able to agilely traverse through the city.

The Martians created destruction and mayhem as the human forces entered Alberni. Fortunately, most of the population had evacuated east after the Martian’s initial push, but panic cries could be heard as he remaining citizens tried to flee. M4 Sherman tanks and M20 armored cars rolled down the streets, accompanied by infantry. Without warning, two Mini's swooped down onto one of the Shermans. Clawing their way through the armor, they massacred the crew, and disappeared again as quickly as they came. The infantry were only able to get a few hurried shots before they vanished behind a corner.
Other tanks and IFV's suffered the same fate on different streets. And the Mini's masers only added to the threat.
.
Steve had Willie park Lil Toot on top of a hill on one of the city streets to get the best possible view. While Toot's gun packed a punch, her armor was not suited for any of the heavier Martian weaponry. The hand cranked turret also put her at a disadvantage in the urban environment. Steve could see that other M10's had placed themselves in similar positions nearby, and were already shelling away at the enemy.

“Alright fellas, let’s give those boys some cover. Keep yer eyes peeled and heads up. They're liking these tall buildings, so let's get'em on th' ground if we can.”
>>
No sooner had the words left his mouth, than one of the Mini's rushed from an alley, and came to a skidding halt on the street ahead of them. As it struggled to get to cover, Joe brought Toot's cannon to bear.

“Well speak of the devil. Take 'em down, Joe.” Steve ordered

“Firin'” Joe thumbed the trigger, sending the three inch into the walker. The armor piercing high explosive round punched through the Mini's front and exploded out it's back in a mixture of metal and guts.

“Good fucking shot, Joe! Now get us reloaded George, there may be more comin'.” Steve cheer as the Mini burned.

“Ya know boss, you should really stop doubting me.” Joe smirked from behind his sight.

“Alright now Joe, don't get cocky. Wasn't too long ago you couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. Remember in California? You tried.”

The rest of the crew laughed as Joe grumbled in his seat. The joking stopped soon though. Small arms fire caught their attention.
“Alright Willie, take us over a couple of blocks. Let’s see if they need some help over there.”

Willie ran Lil Toot down a few blocks till they came across a M20 armored car, and a platoon of infantry in a heated fight with three Mini's. The humans had managed to keep the walkers pinned down with a combination of grenades and the M2 on the armored car. The Martians had refused to give up, however, and were giving all they had to break out. They tore chunks out of nearby abandoned cars and bricks from the building at their backs, and used to the projectiles to keep the humans back.

Lil Toot rolled to a stop next to the M20 as a tire crashed into a shop behind them.

“Looks like y'all could use a hand.” Steve said as he poked the top of his head over the turret.

“You're damn right we do!' replied a soldier from next to the armor car. The bars on his helmet and collar showed him to be a lieutenant. “Now help us light these fuckers up!” he dove back behind the M20 as a car door bounced of of Lil Toot's side.

“We got a handle on Sir! Leave it to us. Alright Joe, you heard th' man, take 'em down.”

Lil Toot's cannon thundered, sending an APHE round right into the wall behind the Martians, exploding into the brick and mortar. Dozens of eyes snapped in the M10's direction. Even the Mini's seems to pause from their barrage, confused as to why they weren't hit.

“Joe. They're right FUCKING there. How? How, Joe?” Steve pinched the bridge of his nose. “Just. Just shoot it again.”

“Right” Joe replied quickly.

George had already loaded another round and was about to call ready, but a loud groan captured everyone’s attention. The Martians looked behind themselves in time to see the entire side of the building come crashing down on top of them. Three stories of brick, mortar, and lumber crushed the aliens below. After the dust settled, all they could see was one limp, clawed tentacle.

“Huh, looks like that worked to me, boss.” Joe grinned as he set back in his seat.

“Yer just a lucky sumbitch, is all” Steve spit over the side of the turret.
>>
“Fantastic work, gentlemen! How about you men stick with us, and we can have this area cleared in no time. “ the Lieutenant said as he climbed up into the M20.

“Sounds like a plan to me, Sir. Y'all look like y'all could take all th' help you can get. Just give Lil Toot here something to blow her horn at, and we'll have them squids outta here in no time.” Steve boasted as he patted the side of the turret.

The Lieutenant looked from Steve to Lil Toot, and back to Steve again, before shaking his head.

“Lil Toot, huh. You armored boys sure are an odd group.” He laughed as he ordered his men forward.

“Well that was mighty impolite of him” Joe grumbled as he brought the cannon back to the forward position.

“Aww, he just don't know'er like we do, is all” Steve chuckled. “Ain't that right Georgey? Alright Willie, we're sticking with these guys for now. Stay close.”

“Sure thing” Willie said and he shifted into gear, and began moving forward.

The small outfit, plus Lil Toot, continued from block to block, combing the area for Martians. As they played their game of cat and mouse, the M20 would scout ahead, while Willie would bring up the tank destroyer if they found anything. Other armored platoons and infantry joined them as they swept the area. The deeper they pushed in, they found more and more wrecks of IFV's and M4's. Cries from the wounded filled the air, and dead soldiers were found strewn about in some areas. The sight reminded the men that this would not be an easy job.

As they made their way down Main Street, two walkers leaped from one of the building and landed on the leading Sherman. They tore open the turret and snatched one of the crew before a shell took out one of them. The remaining Mini took off down a narrow side street firing a few pot shots with its maser. Immediately, three other Shermans followed the Mini down the street.

“Those dumbasses! What'er they do'in leavin' us out to dry like this? Follow'em Willie.” an explosion from the street cut him off “And hurry up! It don't sound good down there.”

Willie turned the tank destroyer down the narrow road, with the foot soldiers not far behind. Up the street, a burning M4 showed what Steve already knew. It was an ambush.

“SHEIT!” Joe quickly hopped behind the M2. George, how much ammo we got left?'

“Not much Corporal. Four rounds of AP, two rounds off APHE, and one HE.” George replied after a quick count.

“Aww hell. Make yer shots count Joe. Let's get to work.” Steve punctuated his sentence with a blast from the heavy machine gun.
>>
Up ahead, the two remaining Shermans were putting up a hard fight, and the infantry joining the fray peppered the Martians with small arms fire. But for ever Mini they took out, it seemed as if three more took its place.

Joe took aim at a couple of Martians that had perched on the side of one of the buildings. As they prepared to fire their masers, he sent an HE round in to wall, destroying their perch and sending them crashing into the asphalt. Another Mini was able to nail another Sherman with is maser, cooking of the ammo and causing it to blow it's turret. Dozens of men were killed or injured from the blast and shrapnel.

Immediately after, a group of the Mini's fixated themselves on Lil Toot. Four of them began to quickly make their way to the tank destroyer. The remaining Sherman was able to disable one, but the last three jumped out of the way.

“They're coming right for us! Hit'em Joe, HIT'EM!” Steve fired a long burst into one of the machines, striking something vital. The walker fell to the ground, twitching as it's brothers kept going. Joe thumbed the trigger once more and another walker collapsed, it's side missing.

“I'm out, dammit. Throw me the Thompson!” Steve yelled into the turret.

“What the hell good is that gonna do?” Joe shouted as he struggled to bring the gun to bear, and George struggle to get Steve the sub machine gun.

As they scrambled, the Mini closed the distance between it and Lil Toot, and leaped into the air. Steve's eyes widened and his stomach knotted as realization hit him. They were all about to die. There was no way the Thompson would stop that machine, and Joe would not be able to bring up the gun in time. Lil Toot lurched as the Mini landed on top of her. Steve squeezed his eyes shut, thinking about his wife and daughter back home. Joe cursed as he tried to shove himself deeper into the hull. George screamed as he emptied the M1 Thompson's magazine, most of his shots missing or just bouncing off the beast. They all waited for death, but it never came. Instead, Steve opened his eyes to see the walker shudder and a hole appear in its chest. The M10 shook again as the walker rolled limply off the side.

“What the fuck just happened?” Willie called from his seat.

George was still scream with his eyes closed, finger tight on the Thompson's trigger.

“Calm 'em down, Joe” George said, breathlessly after a few seconds.

Looking back behind them, he saw a lone figure. A witch. A witch holding a smoking cannon.

“Greetings, rabochikh!” The witched called as she worked the bolt on her striker's gun. The rifle boomed again and another Martian fell. “Your savior has arrived!”

Steve stared at the blond curly haired witch, as Joe wrestled the sub-machine gun away from George. She made short work of the remaining Mini's, and made to push past Lil Toot to give chase. Her strikers scraped along the M10's hull as she tried to squeeze past.
>>
“AH! Look what you have done to my strikers! These were a gift from the motherland, not like this pile of iron and bolts you call a tank.” She sneered as she effortlessly pushed the thirty ton machine to the side. “I will remember this, this.” Her eyes narrowed as she read the name on the hull. “This, Toot.” she spat. “You amerikantsy cannot even name your steed's correctly.”

With that, she sped down the street, disappearing around the corner. The Sherman, and infantry not tending to the wounded made to follow.

Joe finally wrestled the gun away from George, and calmed him down. He also starred in the direction of their witch savior.

“Let’s.. Let’s get back home, boys. I think we've done all we can do today. Sam let 'em know we're heading back.” Steve slumped into his seat, exhausted.

“You don't haf'ta tell me twice. That witch bitch can have 'em.” Willie said quickly as he settled back into his seat. He backed Lil Toot out of the street and steered them back in the direction of Fort Alberni.
