A generation ago the world burned. In the time of feuding clans and rebellion against the Emperor's Divine Mandate by the southern provinces the Middle Kingdom was invaded by barbarians who swept in on a tide of blood. After almost a generation of suffering and the fall of the old Dynasty after it lost the Mandate of Heaven, peace holds over the Middle Kingdom under the new Emperor. In this time of healing many prohibitions from the time of the last Emperor in an attempt to reconnect with older traditions. Tournaments of martial combat have once again come into vogue, and the various dojos of the Middle Kingdom have come out of the shadows since the persecution against them has ended. With the barbarians repelled and the land united calm has become the norm as the people try to forget the terrors of the past.

But even in the pool of sweetest tranquility there are always ripples...

*******************************************************

There are many styles of fighting taught in the Dojos of the Middle Kingdom. Some are rooted in ancient tradition, some are the techniques of upstart schools rising in the world, and others are rooted in secret societies and founded on promises all but the most esoteric masters have forgotten. Each of them have begun training and sending out champions in order to secure the reputation and honor of their respective schools of fighting.

Choose your style, honor your school, seize your destiny.

(Cont'd)
>>
>White Lotus Style (Yao Zhe Syndicate): A style that seeks to strike the breath from an opponent's body. The use of pressure points and lightning fast hand strikes are taught along with swift footwork to outmaneuver styles that draw their power from more traditional stances. Grappling is frowned on. Weapons commonly used with the style are the three section staff, the combat staff, and the tonfa. The style is heavily associated with the Yao Zhe Syndicate, a martial arts society that seized control of smuggling and protection operations in the western part of the country.
>Pros: Strong mid-range techniques, excellent footwork, techniques don't require lots of power to be devastating
>Cons: Weak grappling, weak stances

>Moon Fox Style (Yellow Poet Society): A style that seeks to allow the opposition to defeat itself. This style favors misdirection coupled with throws, locks, and open handed strikes. Kicking is de-emphasized and hard strikes are not favored. Traditional weapons include throwing knives, rope darts, and the curved sword. The Silk Fox Style is traditionally an art favored by Courtesans and is still well known amongst them, but a group of traveling masters called the Yellow Poet Society is responsible for its rise to popularity in recent years.
>Pros: Good grappling and groundwork, users don't telegraph their moves, use enemy's power against them
>Cons: Lack of variety of hard striking techniques, lack of long range kicking

(cont'd)
>>
>Black Tiger Style (Old Pine Tree School): A style that seeks to seize its opponent like the Tiger. Chokes and close body combat are emphasized in combination with a style of swift and direct kicking. Long range strikes almost always lead into chokes and bone breaking locks as the tiger closes with its prey. De-emphasizes any strike that isn't a kick or a lead in to a grapple. Traditional weapons include claws, nunchucks, and sais. This marital art is associated with the Old Pine Tree School, a traditional dojo located in the southern mountains and jungles.
>Pros: Good grappling and groundwork, strong kicking techniques, powerful stances
>Cons: De-emphasizes midrange techniques, has no answer to short range strikes aside from grappling

>Cloud Dragon Style (Bong Fei Temple): A style that seeks to strike in a moment of divine inspiration. Strong stances fuel devastating kicks and hand strikes, and the style is known for hitting hard. De-emphasizes grappling and close range strikes, as these are not the way of the Dragon. Traditional weapons include the spear, swords of all sorts, and the staff. This martial art is associated with the Bong Fei Temple, which teaches any who are willing to come live by the rules of its order so long as they train there.
>Pros: Strong stances means power, good strikes at long and mid range
>Cons: Weak grappling, weak close range strikes

>Grey Spider Style (Zhou Family): A style that seeks to strike the heart. Rapid combinations of focused close and medium range strikes are emphasized. Long range techniques and kicking are discouraged as inefficient uses of one's energy. The net, axe, and hook swords are native to this art. This martial art is associated with the Zhou Family who once held great power, and is practiced by both family members and trusted retainers.
>Pros: Rapid close range striking, good mid range striking, good stances
>Cons: No long range techniques, no real kicks

The yao zhe style reminds me of a style called Arhat Deva. It appears in the fist of the north star series, and has the same or a similar goal.

If I understand what I'm reading right, a yao zhe chain might be

>hit that forces a sudden exhale
>punch in the right temple
>kick in the left knee
>throat paralyzing jab
>tonfa strike to back of head

Result: swept off feet and suddenly killed via a hard blow to the back of the head, the kill mostly silent.

>note: this assumes a nat 20 success or two, I'm really just trying to figure out if I understand what I'm reading or not.
>>
>>22982328
Grey Spider Style. I like the name and if we can close the distance on someone we can keep up the beat down until they're down.
>>
>>22982310
Moon Fox Style.
>>
I like Moon Fox. It sounds really effective at countering other styles.
>>
Moon Fox all the way.
>>
>>22982383

If you want to get Sherlock Holmes about it, though barehanded strikes can be lethal as well.
>>
If this is after 1st century AD, the Grey Spiders would probably have some martial accupunctural knowledge. This means a grey spider user might be able to paralyze, reverse, divert, or otherwise seriously harm a target's circulatory system by hitting the right areas. And since its looking to stop the heart, this is likely something they would know. I'm not the OP, I just know a good bit about martial arts, whether they be real or fictional and I'm trying to help make it exciting, fun, and interesting by lending my knowledge.
>>
Moon Fox sounds like the true baller's martial art.
>>
>>22982310
Can we make people explode with white lotus style?
>>
>>22982455

Pressure points are something both Grey Spider and White Lotus likes a lot, though nobody has a monopoly on anything.
>>
>>22982474

We're going somewhere between realistic and high wuxia rather than full on kung fu wizards, so no.
>>
Gonna put in a vote for cloud dragon style.
>>
>>22982310
>Lack of variety of hard striking techniques
But they do things like open-hand strikes to joints, right? If so, then I don't see a problem.
>>
>>22982497
So we can't make people explode, but we might be able to stop their heart, block chi flow, and otherwise fuck them up with some proper touches, but not explode them.

Also, I vote for Grey Spider, they're very direct and to the point and can cover close and medium range rather well.
>>
>>22982497
Could a martial arts user strike the correct pressure points to make a target feel so much pain their affected limb is effectively paralyzed, or they have a seizure or stroke from the strain of the damage? While they don't make people explode, some of the more advanced techniques in martial arts can make a person have a seizure, stroke, or faint instantly.
>>

>>White Lotus Style

agree but all the styles listed seam to be external in nature are there no soft forms? on internal styles available?

yea >White Lotus Style
then make friends with a Moon Fox to grt some locks
a >Cloud Dragon Style for better foot work and kicks

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=glsUlacDN7Q
>>
>>22982532
Moon Fox sounds like a soft form. It's open-hand and seems to be built on the water principle. It sounds like Tai Chi mixed with Aikido.
>>
Moon fox seems like the most awesome. We don't have many hard striking techniques, but then, we don't NEED that many.

Alternatively, Dragon or spider.
>>
>>22982532
sounds like someone's read some "How I killed your master."
>>
>>22982531

That's a thing, yes.

>>22982532

We're not going by Wu Lin rules, so no external/internal style.
>>
>>22982552
I read somewhere that there was at one time a (now archaic) version of tai chi that was martial purposes, and not relaxation. It was outlawed in the 14th or 15th century as being 'to deadly'. I'm not sure thats true or not, but theres a lore reason it could be like tai chi and akkido if you care to use it.
>>
>>22982615
Tai Chi is still deadly and for martial purposes. It's name literally translates to Supreme Ultimate Fist.
>>
>>22982615
Have you ever heard of the Dim Mak?
>>
>>22982651
I've seen one or two films where its used for martial purposes. If they are anywhere even CLOSE to reality, thats a style I would want to learn and use. I thought that the relaxation form was different from the martial form. Might have been told wrong information there.
>>
>>22982663

Yes.
>>
>>22982651
This. This is entirely true. If you practice Tai Chi at full speed instead of at a meditative pace, it is a truly brutal soft/water art. Brutal soft strikes, incredible stance and space manipulation, fantastic redirection and joint destruction. Plus, its principles help enhance literally any other martial art you know.
>>
>>22982569
nope just school motto

"extra points for beating them with it and calming it was yours all along"

>Tai Chi is still deadly and for martial purposes. It's name literally translates to Supreme Ultimate Fist.

Yeah. I was under the impression that all those motions are straight up combat moves, and they just practice slow because that also improves your balance.
>>
>>22982734
I had been told at one point that the two forms diverge and that the martial form has different postures and movements. I might be misremembering what I was told though because it was so long ago. Thats why the confusion.
>>
>>22982734
Practicing slow also improves your form. You should never practice so fast that you lose control of your motions. If you practice it right, no matter how slow, once it's time to put it to proper use, you'll do it correctly.
>>
>>22982755
Kung Fu - especially San Soo - is derived from Tai Chi. Tai Chi is the ur martial art of China, and it shows.
>>
My current tally is:

White Lotus: 3
Grey Spider: 2 or 3?
Moon Fox: 5
Cloud Dragon: 1

It would seem that Moon Fox has won out, but I'll give it another five minutes or so.
>>
>>22982772
Please go ahead and continue. I was one of the White Lotus votes, but I would rather start than see my style of choice win out.
>>
>>22982569
Actually, that whole "steal from everywhere as long as it works" thing has been around for quite a while (although How I Killed Your Master is awesome), "Absorb what is useful, discard what is not, add what is uniquely your own." and all that.
Voting for Moon Fox.
>>
>>22982279
Cloud Dragon Style
No other style is fit for the martial arts emperor!
I think we should pick the cloud dragon style and go full on Ken-Oh mode.
>>
>>22982795
Isn't that basically Jeet Kune Do?
>>
>>22982734
Exactly, practicing them slow gets you better form, balance, and so on. It does have health benefits which is nice, but it's also an extremely brutal martial art form in some respects. It's very soft and flowing, and then you break someone's neck or drop them onto the concrete and break something.

In theory. It's been around for a long time (Kyokushin karate is a hybrid style, for example), but Bruce Lee was one of the most notable men to write the concept out as a fighting philosophy.

Musashi wrote a similar treatise way back in the day, actually. The Book of Five Rings.

To me it feels more like a combination of White Lotus and Grey Spider. Lots of fast close/medium strikes, minimal kicking, pressure points.

After spending years training with your Master in the Yellow Poet Society, you have been deemed ready to strike out on your own. You have wandered some distance and found a local tournament to enter. There is no flashy pageantry or competitions of form or skill with weapons, and there are plenty of half trained fools and brawling louts who have entered, but you have noticed a few warriors who seem to be worth fighting, which is why you decided to enter the tournament here and begin your quest...

*****************************************

The gong rings as a fighter in the circle is dispatched by a sloppy punch to the jaw. As the man drops like a sack of rice he is dragged off by tournament organizers and the floor is cleared for the next bout. Your bout. You rise to your feet and toss aside the cloth you had draped over your head as your name is called by the announcer.

What name does he call, and just who is it that steps into the ring?

For the Taijiquan enthusiasts, here's what I learnt about the major families: Wudang style was the original art practiced by Zhang Sanfeng in the 12th century (he was a graduate of the Shaolin monastery, so no, Taijiquan wasn't the "ur" example of kung fu, that was Lohan kung fu, or "Monk style"). The emphasis of Wudang style was spiritual cultivation and meditation (considered the highest path). Eventually, some dude called Chen Wangting in the 16th century learnt and modified the Wudang style into his personal style, emphasizing its combat aspects, and passed it down the Chen family (hence why it is known as Chen style Taijiquan today). Eventually, some dude called Yang Lu Chan gave up his fortune and secretly learnt Chen style Taijiquan whilst disguised as a servant in the Chen family household, and eventually won their trust. Yang Lu Chan took the style to Beijing where he became an imperial martial arts instructor and took on many challenge matches. Yang Lu Chan's grandson, Yang Deng Fu, modified the Chen style to emphasize its health aspects (making the forms larger and more rounded); this is the most popular Taijiquan practiced today and is known as the Yang family style. A couple sub-styles are descended from the Yang style, like Sun (from Sun Lu Tang), Hao, and Wu.

I'm a bit of a kung fu guy myself (though I personally practice Baguazhang). Sorry about the potential derail!

Putting my vote for Cloud Dragon style. Stances and the divine moment of inspiration are jawsome.

"Guo Wei."

The person who strides out to face you is lean and dark, with an easy smile and a relaxed posture. He bows lightly as you face one another, then strikes a stance.

***********************************************************

Before you jump right in, let me explain how we'll be doing combat. Style, practice, and personal inclination will affect your abilities with certain techniques. I will present a description of the situation and then explain it to you in the following format:

>Opponent: Rested and in front stance
>Distance: Out of reach
>Not telegraphing

[ ] Rush to Palm Strike (40%)
[ ] Step Side-kick (60%)
[ ] Flying kick (70%)
[ ] Wait
[ ] Other

The above would indicate that on 1d100 you strike on a 40 or less with a palm strike, 60 or less with a side kick etc. However these numbers are presented to you "blind", as you have no idea how well he will defend or counter each of these moves, though from his style and previous exchanges you will have to guess. If your opponent is telegraphing you can guess much more easily.

The moves I present to you as options will fit Zhou Qian's style and the distance between the two of you. The logic behind this is that you don't always have an opening for every technique you might throw. You can pick Other to try and force a situation to use a certain technique in, but there will be complicating factors. However, if you spot an opening in the description and opt to take advantage of an unlisted option that makes sense it will likely be very advantageous to do so.

And with that we begin....
>>
>>22983656

You drop into a ready stance of your own and watch your opponent carefully. He shifts his stance and slides a step in your direction, sinuous like a snake. He raises his hands up to strike at you, and keeps all his weight on his forward leg so that the back leg can strike.

>Opponent: Approaching slowly and in front stance

[X] Force a technique
The essences of a counterattack style is to force your opponent to strike first then counter.
>>
The man puts even more weight on his front leg and moves as though he is going to throw a front kick. His hands remain up, but his shoulders are not tensed, so he seems to be waiting to see if his kick lands before throwing a combination. His guard presses against yours.

>Opponent: Fresh, in front stance
>Distance: Long distance
>Telegraphing a front snap kick

[ ] Grab lead hand and pull (70%)
[ ] Sidestep and await opportunities (40%)

You manage to successfully jack your opponent's arm into the air as you force him to his knees. He sinks lower and lower as bones groan and threaten to break. You meet strong resistance near the end, but it just isn't enough... until he manages to push himself up into the air with his other arm and twists around for a hard roundhouse kick!

>Opponent: Arm injured, locked

The kick is obvious, why don't we move from the armbar to using the force from the kick to flip him straight on to the ground and putting him in a leglock.

You twist and throw, but he twists in midair as he flies toward the wall and lands feet first against it, then launches himself at you. It seems he is going for a flying kick! He's mere feet away coming fast, and it's decision time.

>Opponent: Arm injured

Dude, we're a giant beefy dude who practices a martial art all about gently redirecting energy, misdirection, and throws/locks. We look like a scarred brawler, but spend our off time playing with children, feeding ducks, and writing poetry. How could you not want this?

You grab him by his weakened arm and go for the shoulder throw, slamming him to the ground. He attempts to get back up, but is too weakened and too slow to avoid having his weak arm locked up and being forced down. Rather than have his arm broken he taps out and submits.

********************************************

Going to end it here for tonight. We'll pick it up at 6PM Central on Wednesday.

Did combat feel a bit slow for anyone else?
>>
>>22985549
It felt a bit slow to me, maybe try making it a bit more abstracted and cinematic next time.
>>
>>22985549
It felt like you were having a hard time keeping up with all those high rolls and integrating them with your posts, but that's to be expected on the first thread. All in all, it was pretty solid.
>>
>>22985549
Each individual part went relatively smoothly, but there were so many that it seemed to drag on for a while. Particularly since we're just rolling dice, we probably shouldn't have to spend so much time deciding what to do, move by move.
>>
>>22985564

Longer and better descriptions of exchanges maybe?

>>22985573
>>22985587

What if I automated parts of combat and only asked you to make decisions on big rolls?
>>
>>22985653
>automated parts of combat and only asked you to make decisions on big rolls
This would probably run better, unless you actually intend to have a heavy combat focus.
>>
>>22985677

I do intend to have a heavy combat focus.
>>
>>22985653
That would probably streamline it to both of our benefits. That way you could write out significant cinematic portions and we could still feel engaged
>>
>>22985681
...How heavy? We spent over a hundred posts in this combat alone.
>>
>>22985653
That sounds good, for each longer exchange of combat ask for a basic plan of what we want to do and then play it out, streamline it so we don't have to roll for each throw, exchange and so on.

You could streamline it more by having less die rolling, still have it for important exchanges, important opponents, that sort of thing, but we don't need it for every single part of every single fight.
>>
>>22985708

I feel like it should somehow be faster but with more moves to it, if that makes sense.
