The sound of morning cartoons, of all things, wakes you up. You're initially confused- there's no TVs in the place other than the one up in the lounge- but you don't remember going to bed, either.

Cracking one eye reveals that you ended up just sleeping on the couch. Someone- probably Merlin or Goose- draped a blanket over you, and thought to put your boots on the floor in front of the couch- amusingly, with the heels together at a forty five degree angle. You haven't done that since your days at the academy. Rolling over and stretching also reveals why your feet stayed warm- Ice fell asleep on the couch too, twisted sideways with her head leaned back and her legs folded up next to yours on the edge of the couch.

All in all, it's fairly impressive- she's gotta be fairly flexible to be able to get comfortable like that. Either that or she just didn't want to wake you up. Hard to say, really.

You yawn and stretch again, turning your head to look at the TV, where four humanoid turtles are busily doing ninja things through the opening credits. You're honestly not really sure what that's all about, but apparently it's interesting enough for Maverick and Goose, both of whom have bowls of cereal on TV trays in front of them and are watching with rapt attention.

1/2
>>
Well, kind of rapt, anyway. You can hear them talking in between mouthfuls of whatever it is they're eating.

“They're kinda cute like that.” Goose says, taking another bite of cereal.

“Who? The turtles?” Maverick answers, confused. “I mean, I guess, if you're into that sort of thing.”

Goose giggles a bit. “No, silly. Frank and Tabitha.”

“Oh,” Maverick responds, adding in a small laugh of her own. “Yeah, I guess so. Just don't let Katya know we think so.”

“Is she really that jealous?” Goose asks, sounding kind of surprised.

Maverick nods. “Well, kinda. She thinks Ice is only interested now that she's done the hard work of showing that Frank can care about things past a target and his crew.” She shrugs, her accent becoming a bit more pronounced. “But she coulda just asked me, too.”

Goose giggles again. “Frank says you're just telling stories about that and you never did anything.”

“Frank just doesn't want to corrupt your innocence or something.” Maverick says. “Besides, he doesn't know what Rick and I were doing anyway.”

[] “Oh? What were you doing, then?”

For now, you elect to remain quiet, interested in the conversation. Well, kind of- of course you knew what she and Rick were doing- after all, you occupied the bunk just above Rick's aboard the Saratoga anyway. And got to listen to him brag about 'bagging a witch' early on, followed by listening to him talk about how great Patty was as a person later. It got old, fast. Then again, you suppose most first loves do get old fast when you have to hear about them constantly.

Goose makes a strangled noise. “I-I don't really think I want to hear any more about Rick, Patty.” She says. “You talk about him an awful lot. Why don't you write him?”

Maverick's shoulders slump visibly. “I dunno.” She says, her voice small. “He... I... We. We kind of grew apart, I guess. It just wouldn't be the same.”

Goose doesn't say anything in response to that.

They sit quietly for a minute, then Goose speaks up again. “So how do you think they're going to take the news?”

Maverick shrugs. “No tellin'. Slider thinks Frank and Merlin are going to be happy as hell, and Ice will go back to being the frost queen of the pacific. I dunno about the rest. Slider's pretty happy though. What about you? You excited?”

You can't see Goose's face, but you can hear a hesitant note in her voice. “I don't know. I... I'm always nervous landing on carriers. It's so easy to mess that up.”

Maverick wraps an arm around her young charge's shoulders. “I was like that too. Just watch the steelwings sometime when they're on approach. Hell, halfa them can't even see the deck if they get their noses up too high. If they can do it, you got it made!”

This is one of those all too rare chances to see Maverick dealing with Goose without anyone else around. Plus you never knew that she'd been that shook up about Orion- maybe everything since then has just been an act? Hard to say, but it kind of seems that way, at least to you.

Then again, no one ever accused you of being the most astute. After all, you routinely strap yourself to a configuration of a million moving pieces flying in tight formation and several thousand pounds of jet fuel and piss all over physics and Newton whenever you can.

Goose sighs. “Yeah, I guess you're right. They do have it a lot worse than we do. When do we have to report aboard, anyway?”

Maverick shrugs. “Dunno, Slider didn't say. I'm sure Ice'll tell us when she wakes up and finds out.”

Down at your feet, Ice stirs.

“Well,” Goose says. “It must be soon, right? They were loading up all our equipment into those two planes earlier.”

Maverick shrugs again. “Dunno. When did you go down to the hangar, anyway?”

“Earlier this morning, before you got up!” Goose says, defensively. “I wanted to help make sure the planes were ready to go, and Hank and Dale have been teaching me how to play poker and talk like a Texan!”

“Texan!” Maverick says, feigning outrage. “Why would you want to sound Texan?” Her own drawl is clearly detectable, now.

Goose giggles, but doesn't say anything.

The thumping of boots on the floor announces Slider.

“Hey,” She says to the two witches in front of the TV. “The lovebirds still- oh, nevermind. Good. You two got your stuff together?”

“Yeah.” Maverick responds. “We're good to go, just waiting on the rest of the posse.”

“Alright, good. Wanna help me wake them up?” Slider asks.

[x] Other! (Feign sleep till the last second)

You quickly screw your eyes shut again, relying on Slider's characteristic heavy tread to judge her distance from you. Many things she may be, sneaky isn't one of them.

“Nah. I don't want to be in the same room when you wake Ice up anyway. She's gonna be mad.” Maverick says.

Slider scoffs. “Why, because we finally let her sleep with Frank?”

“Oh, yeah,” Ice says, sarcastically. “Like that was something you've been fighting me real hard on.” She whacks you in the hip to 'wake' you up. You duly act surprised.

Or bad-dragon.com.

It works so well because no matter what the shark-twins are... suffering from, one may presume Fronk showed Slider the website she eventually acquired it from.

Hell, it was probably J-List.

"HEY SLIDER, CHECK OUT THESE TIT-PILLOW THINGS AIN'T THAT A LAUGH!"

When one of those tit-pillows showed up in his rack two weeks later, he realized his error. But it was too late to take it back.

The horror potential just quadrupled. 1989 was the Age of Usenet... back when just owning a computer with a modem made you a gigantic giga-nerd. The whole "internet" as it then existed was... 'underground,' you could say. You could Find Shit you couldn't find anywhere else. Actually, in 1989 that was probably the only way you could acquire, uh, certain product catalogs on most military bases, since the NO PORN edict was still in effect at that time, IIRC.

It was all newsgroups back then; internet that pre-dates HTTP. They still exist and some are still fairly active, but most ISPs don't even offer newsgroup services anymore - it's entirely separate from hyper-text transfer protocol and works rather differently.

Back in the day the cool kids would use modems so archaic you'd have to set your phone into a cradle with speakers that'd hiss like Satan into the handset to connect to a newsgroup server, where you'd download a list of phone-company long-distance calling card numbers to access newsgroup servers outside of your local area to get the GOOD SHIT, which was usually a plaintext copy of the Anarchist's Handbook or something equally EDGY that'd take an hour to download, if not more. 9600 baud for the win, bitches.

Military commo geeks made good use of it; esp. because in 1989 half the people with the equipment had access through their work. Grid 1530 with red plasma screens - first laptop used in War (Gulf war.) Same laptop they used in Aliums to run the auto-guns.

Slider smiles sweetly. “Mess with the best....” She says, turning around and walking off.

You don't see the sharktwins on your way to the showers, though Merlin intercepts you outside your room, pulling on 'her' leather jacket and grabbing her flight bag.

“Morning Frank!” She smiles up at you. “I- uh. I packed your things for you, I hope you don't mind. Oh, and there's a clean flight suit for you, and Slider wanted us to go get the jet set up for a shuttle mission. I'm going to be in the lounge, come get me when you get out of the shower, ok?”

Yeah, you wouldn't be buying dragon dildoes. At best, what you'd get is a message with the header HOT HOOK-UP FOR NAUGHTY SHIT and the subject text would give an address, and instructions to mail $3.95 to said address with a self-stamped, self-addressed return envelope to receive a... product catalog of dubious nature.

When said magazine would arrive it would be poorly printed and off-center on cheap pulp paper, and the things for sale IN it would make you don rubber gloves before continuing to peruse the pages.

Forget the goddamn dragon dildoes. >>22999939 has a much better idea.

Cite me some examples here because the only thing regarding her behavior before the quest started was how cold, impersonal, and strictly by-the-book she was because she thought that was the way a CO had to be.

I still don't see what the problem is anyway since that was in the past. She's different now.

Wrong and wrong. She made it abundantly clear that Fronk wasn't wanted. And you don't just give your trust to someone who does a 180, what, were you dropped on your head as a kid? That's a classic sign the other shoe's coming. And besides, what reassurance do you have that they aren't going to do another about-face. It's not holding a grudge, it's being properly cautious. Why do you think that old saying about the value of first impressions exists?

>>23000643
That is very true! But there were also different circumstances involved there which don't exist here.

>>
>>23000668
She didn't like his seemingly unorthodox manners as opposed to Minna's anti-man stance.

And the passage of time changed things for both, such as Ice realizing things aren't always so clear cut and by the book. (Though we never did find out the full story of her father)
>>
>>23000676

I know, that's what I'm saying. I wish ghost hadn't gone the WWIII route, because before that we could have air-combat hijinks without it being so deadly serious all the time.
>>
>>23000668

First impressions are important but in they end, they are JUST first impressions. You can get off to a bad start but get to know the person better after time spent together.

And she didn't exhibit a sudden change but a gradual mellowing as Fronk became less of a loose cannon.

People change dammit.

That scene of Ice in the office as Merlin was introduced made it pretty clear to me. I'm not talking about the start of the series, I mean every mention of Ice prior. She was a huge bitch, like a half-step up from Bitchtits, for a while. Additionally, while Fronk may have been part of chasing off Orion, Ice had a large hand in that too.

>>

Half-step up, as I said. Remember the drug memory? That was pretty hostile. Additionally it was incredibly unprofessional.

Look, let me tell you something about what happens to unit morale when there's obvious divisions and a segment is obviously marginalized or unwanted. Morale goes straight down the shitter. And if it goes on long enough, it extends through most of the unit. I saw it all the damn time with cross-leveled soldiers in reserve units who got marginalized. It's easy to do but it really does harm. So that wasn't even Ice being 'professional', it was her being so hostile as to override all professional concerns. And being a poor leader.

[x] “Don't worry about it none, Merlin. Just do me a favor and see about getting everyone together up in the lounge before I get out of the shower.” (Give everyone their presents all together)

“Don't worry about that, Merlin.” You say, stopping by your newly-empty room to grab the clean flight suit and your own packed flight bag. “Just see if you can't get everyone together in the lounge before I get out of the shower, ok?”

Merlin nods. “Ok Frank! We'll be waiting!”

You take maybe a bit longer in the shower than you normally would, fondly bidding it goodbye. While you won't want for hot water- one of the perks of a nuclear powered carrier- the ones aboard ship, even in the witch's quarters, are much smaller and spartan.

Still, it's not long before you're dressed and ready to go, your room all closed up and your flight bag in hand. Over your shoulder is the OD green bag that's sat for a few weeks, full of presents.

There's one more thing, though, one Merlin didn't know about.

You'll never know why you bought the lingerie, but you did. What do you want to do with it?

[] Stow it here. Let the next occupants wonder.
[] Stow it in the flight bag. Never know, may want it some day.
[] Pack it in with Ice's gifts. This is totally a good idea!
[] Put parts of it in different witches gifts! Keep 'em wondering!

[x] Stow it here. Let the next occupants wonder.

You decide to leave the lingerie here. Honestly, it's too much of a risk to be carrying with you through the whole war, and besides, you can always just buy more later. Probably.

You hastily scratch out a note reading “for you, my love,” and pin it to the panties, before leaving the whole set in one of the unoccupied rooms on the hall.

Heading upstairs, you run into Rosalie, coming in from her own rooms.

“Do you move this often?” She asks, exhaling. “Once I was assigned to the Foch, I did not have to move from my family's home near there.”

You shrug. “Yeah, we get around a lot. This is our first time back aboard since... well, since before this was a war.” You say, thinking. Last time you did a catapult launch was... what? The flight to shore with admiral Nixon?

“It must not be easy, moving around like this all the time.” She says, causing you to shrug again.

“It is what it is.” You answer. “We go where they need us. It'd be nice to have a home again, though, huh?”

She nods. “Oui. It will be nice. And I hear American carriers are nicer than the Foch, but I'm not sure that's true!”

Upstairs, everyone's gathered. None of the girls are wearing their flight gear, and most of them are even wearing pants.

Except the twins, who seem to be wearing clothing with the combined coverage of a candy bar wrapper. Alyssa looks like she could somehow care less, while Clarissa is actively 'seducing' Ayumi. For what it's worth, she doesn't appear to be having much luck.

“So what's the big deal, Frank?” Slider asks. “Merlin said you wanted all of us here.”

What? It's been around forever. For a while it was Merlin vs Ice. Then everyone learned that Frank was over a decade older than her and backed off. Now it's Ice vs Katya with some contenders on the side. The action has always been off to the side.

I'm more worried about having to go up against REAL pilots. Seriously, every Sov we've gone up against thus far has been a pushover, even the ones in Flankers. That can't last forever. We'll eventually meet someone who's Pugachev-tier.

Time to retake Cam Ranh Bay for our own use, I guess.

Only other use for us I can think of is either the Gulf or the Med. We aren't really focused on ASW stuff, which is what we need in the Atlantic (assuming that Iceland hasn't been invaded a la Red Storm Rising and thus we don't have to worry about Backfires and Blackjacks flying out of Keflavik).

[x] “Christmas presents. Ya know, nothing big.” (Distribute presents like a normal human.)

“Oh, you know,” you say conversationally, opening the bag. “Just a buncha Christmas presents I bought down in Hawaii. Nothing big.”

“When were you in Hawaii?” Alyssa asks, suddenly focusing on you.

Clarissa follows suit rather quickly. “Where in Hawaii? By Kaneohe? We’re from Hawaii ya know.”

Alyssa nods. “Could have shown you the best burger joint in the western hemisphere. Man, I miss those burgers.”

“The ones with pineapple?” her sister responds.

She nods. “Yeah! And that BBQ sauce they made? Oh man.”

“I can almost taste it.” Clarissa says, whistfully. “Speaking of tasting things.... hey Frank!”

“Not right now.” You respond. “Presents, then verbal jousting.”

“I wasn't thinking of anything verbal at all!” She says.

“We weren't thinking of anything verbal at all. we.” Alyssa corrects.

“We weren't? I remember hearing you through the walls that one night on Maui, remember?”

“That was something else.”

“Well, we do agree on jousting, though, right?” Clarissa asks.

Her sister shrugs. “With what? Maybe tilting's closer.”

“Maybe.”

“PRESENTS”. You insist, pulling out the first box and handing it to Slider. “Here. Enjoy. I was... kind of at a loss for what to get you.” You say, shrugging. “You're not that easy to shop for.”

She shrugs. “It's the thought I appreciate. Thanks, Frank! Hey, I wonder if this bear makes gunnybear mormon?”

>>
You decline to comment.

Next up, you hand Ice her gifts- apologizing again. “Sorry it's kinda thin, boss.” you say. “I really wasn't sure what to get you either.”

Ice smiles. “That's fine, we didn't end up getting you anything. I should be saying sorry to you!”

“Ah, it is what it is, boss” you say, digging out Maverick and Goose's gifts. “Here ya go. Again, sorry it's kinda thin, I'll make it up to you later, I promise.”

Goose looks at you, mock-sternly. “Just don't get me an ez-bake oven.” she says. “You can't make anything good with those!”

You laugh, pulling out Katya's gifts. “Here, Katya. I can't imagine you brought your chess set with you when you joined us.”

She shakes her head, opening up the carrying case and gasping. You'd outdone yourself, you thought, with the set- highly ornamental, marble and jet playing board with hand carved pieces made from American holly and bois de rose from Madagascar. The little guy in the shop assured you it was very unique, since the guy that made it made every set by hand, and showed you the maker's stamp on the underside of the board. It also coast you close onto a few hundred dollars, but you felt you could afford to part with the money.

“F... Frank it is gorgeous.” She stammers. She looks up at you. “I have nothing like it to give in return...”

You grin. “That's fine. I think I owe you a life or three anyhow after Tanana.”

She shakes her head. “No, no. but I will find something eventually for you.”

2/3 (oops)
>>
“Finally....” you pick up the bag and walk over to Merlin, dropping it in her lap. “Toss out some of those leg warmers and blankets, kiddo, but the rest is yours.” You say.

She pulls out the gameboy and makes a high pitched squealing noise. “Thank you Frank! I didn't think I was going to get one this christmas!”

You chuckle. “No bringing it on combat flights, though, ok?”

She nods. “Ok. But on ferry flights I can, right?”

“Speaking of ferry flights....” Ice says. “Are you four ready to go? Apart from the obvious, I mean.”

“What obvious?” Alyssa asks.

“We thought we'd fly in like this.” Clarissa says.

[X] “Could do with another walk around and making sure they loaded us with some agiles.”

You shrug. “We could do with another walkaround, if for no other reason than to make sure we've got a weapons load, too.” You say, glancing over at Merlin. “Where are we headed, anyway?”

“Yokosuka. Well, not directly, but close enough. We.” She indicates the rest of the witches. “Will be flying into Yokota airbase, north of Tokyo proper, then getting a IJNLF convoy to drive us to Yokosuka naval base. You're flying to the Saratoga directly, she's out of the bay still, and will just off the boso peninsula when you get to her.”

“Sounds like fun. We'd better get down to the hangar and make sure we're sorted, then. Long trip for something to go wrong in.” You say, motioning to Merlin.

Ice nods. “I'm sure the twins will be down shortly.”

You grab your flight bag, now stuffed with a few of Merlin's presents- she didn't have room in her own bag- and the two of you walk down to the hangar together, where your ground crew is putting the final missiles in your aircraft now.

“Morning sir!” You chief greets you, handing you the paperwork. “Load's pretty good, eight agiles and four AMRAAMS. Pair of tanks under each wing should get ya there, I tell ya what.”

Your walkaround shows nothing worth worrying about- your chief is nothing if not thorough. The bay doors hang open, showing their deadly payload of missiles- their streamers removed- hanging on their launching arms. The bulky, angular external fuel tanks under your wings sound full, and there's even a power cart hooked up, so you don't have to burn gas to start up your APU.

Merlin, similarly, is pleased, agreeing that everything looks fine. The twins arrive sometime about midway through your walk, dressed, thankfully, in flight suits- though Alyssa has hers left unzipped enough to show she's still wearing that skimpy number underneath it. Go figure.

Satisfied with their own walks, the twins come over to discuss the flight plan- you'll stick with the transport until they land, then divert south west and land on the Saratoga. Technically, once your inside the IJAF's coverage, you don't need to be with the transports, but it's a matter of appearances.

Climbing inside the cockpit, you see the girls filing out of the house, their own heavy dufflebags on their backs, weapons in their hands. It almost looks, for a second, like a twisted picture of infantry on the march- hunched over against the weight of their bags, looking dog-tired and not slightly disgruntled.

Katya notices you looking long enough to wave, prompting you to wave back.

“You ready to do the lists Frank?” Merlin asks. “We've got a bit of time, we're ahead of schedule for once.”

“Yeah.” You say, watching the girls board the waiting transport. “Next stop: Japan.”

“I wonder if Katsumi can teach me Japanese?” Merlin wonders as the two of you start your checklists.

anyway, I'll see y'all next week, and I hope y'all still enjoyed it. I know the last few threads were kinda slow, and I'm sorry. we'll be getting back to things as proper soon! I promise!

Hey, quick question:
Do all machines speak in the same 'language' for Merlin? Or do different frames from different nations have 'accents'?
>>
>>23004202

it's all text-based for her. the talent isn't advanced enough- yet- for her to verbally communicate with machines

>implying they are not

"Aegis was state of the art, the best SAM system yet devised, but it had one major weakness: Tico only carried ninety-six SM-2 surface-to-air missiles; there were one hundred and forty incoming. The computer had not been programmed to think about that."

Are quoting a Tom Clancy book? I think you're quoting a Tom Clancy book.

>That was a good read.
It was. Read my paper back enough to where it's in three pieces now. Doesn't help that it's twenty-six years old, of course.
