I am the Chapter Master. You should not concern yourself with my name, for who I am is what I do, not how someone chooses to label me. By the will of the Emperor I command the finest Chapter to ever tread among the stars. I have no fear but to fail in the eyes of my brothers. Age of Ruin is on the horizon, Imperium is falling apart, I know it in my heart. I was blessed and cursed to live in time when the fate of our galaxy is being decided once more. I can just hope that my choices will be right. Ave Imperator et Imperium!

We have arrived to the orbit of an underwater Hive World of Inaria, seeking our Third Company who were failing to answer our communications. Their Captain, an ambitious officer by the name of Arcon, was always known for his independence and arrogance. This, combined with the new Chapter cult of 'Soulkillers' might have had influence on their actions. We have a very strong suspicion, that our brothers may have chosen a darker path. We have infiltrated Hive Neptune and managed to track down Tacitarius, Soulkiller Chaplain. We faced him in single combat and defeated him and then found Captain Arcon. It seems that he was lead astray by the Chaplain and does not harbour heresy himself, however he is not willing to rejoin the Chapter... We stand at croosroads.

+develop characters
+draw portraits for primary and secondary characters

======================================

You are standing in front of Arcon near the shuttle hatch. He expects you to leave his ship, Destiny, so that he and his men could leave the system undisturbed. If you do not, he is threatening to destroy geothermal generators on Inaria, it would destroy this hiveworld. On the other hand, you feel that just letting him go is also wrong. What do you do?
>>
>Arcon, brother. Go. Heal your arm and take your company on crusade. I hope that some day you will return, the chapter will welcome you back if they know you have fought and bled fighting the enemies of the Imperium. But I will say this: do not draw the attentions of the Inquisition, or it could spell doom for us all.

>Thank you for understanding, brother...
Arcon for a moment tried to adress you by name, but his years of conditioning kicked in and he whispers:
>...Chapter Master. I hope our roads meet again in better times.
As your shuttle leaves "Destiny", Third Company departs Inarian system. Just before they are gone Arcon sends you last message:
>There are no charges ready to explode. Kappa Squad is safe and sound aboard Destiny. I am sorry for this lie, brother, but I didn't want to risk a conflict between us. However I would never fall so low as to risk an Imperial world over my own ambitions. Goodbye.
As soon as you decode the message, Destiny makes a warp jump. Synius, your Head Navigator, turns to you and asks:
>Should I try to track their course, lord?

I am SUGGESTING the following course of action for discussion:

Recover all people and equipment from the planet including drop pods and the fallen chaplain's body. We have eliminated the source of the taint and its up to Administradum to deal with the planet. When the chapter asks what happens tell them that there was corruption on both the planet and the chaplain which is true and bring forward the Soulkillers who rejoined us as witnesses. Also say that after discussion with Arcon it was decided that 3rd company would be going on a crusade of penance. It is sad but should be believable and shouldn't hurt morale or get us in trouble from =I=.

We have to rebuild our chapter. The entire chapter returns to Tombstone including 6th company on Varda. In exchange send the Escorts Kentauros and Vanguard to watch over the planet with orders to call us if anything funny starts happening. At Tombstone have a chapter meeting and come clean about a select set of things, namely that we are indeed a psycher. Explain that we don't know we came to gain this skill (technically true since we don't know what the Eldar did but don't mention them). Point out that one of our missions involved an encounter with a Grey Knight (true and we have witnesses from that mission). Explain that he detected our ability and gave us guidance in this area. Produce the book Psychic Rites of Grey Knights as proof, reminding everyone that since the Imperium doesn't like admitting the Grey Knights even exists that this is to be kept strictly confidential and also that it is a sign of our trust in the chapter that we are showing them all this book. Remind everyone that Grey Knights are the foremost experts on all things psychic and heresy and if they did not object to our ability or detect any taint in us then none should doubt us.

Your explanation will be enough to kill off any bad suspicions.

Oh good I am in the driver's seat today

We're sitting on a bunch of stuff we are not using:
1) Assign Gatebreaker to someone. My suggestion is 5th captain Quintor for bonuses to his defensive abilities. If not Macedon for being so reliable. Make a ceremony out of it. Ceremonies build brotherhood.
2) Assign Merkon's rifle to a Revenant. Since we rely on Geron for so much close-in work I suggest giving it to someone who is not Geron. It will be like having our own pseudo-Vindicaire assassin. Make a ceremony out of it. Ceremonies build brotherhood.
3) 20 Red Giant's Power Armor. Best case scenario is we can purify these ourselves. If not ask Nestorium if they can purify them for us. If not ask if they can salvage for at least a little wealth. Worst case scenario we thoroughly destroy it all. No point in keeping any more heretical equipment with us than we have to (hint: we already have a lot).
4) I am a little unclear on if our Mark IV power armor is in any way superior to current models. The fluff seems a little uncertain on this. Could possible assign to someone in the Chapter if it is superior. Perhaps create a position as "Emperor's Champion" for whoever is the best duelist? That might also clamp down on some of the cults. Obviously repaint it in our colors while not pissing off the machine spirit.

Since it seems unlikely that we are ever going to concentrate on getting rid of the Laughing God's influence on us (we have a short attention span) I suggest dumping all available XP into willpower for the inevitable moments when we meet an Inquisitor, roll a natural 100, carve an 8 pointed star on our forehead and start babbling in demonic tongues. But seriously it will give us a little more breathing room on the rolls.

Discuss amongst yourselves.
>>
>>23090926
In regards to the 'rebuilding our chapter' passage, we don't have to recall the 6th.
It has recently become apparent that, in exchange for the vast amounts of MoI machinery we have strewn about our planet, the AdMech will basically give us anything and everything we want.

So yeah, let's go to Nestorium sometime.

But first we should ENSURE Inaria is stable and there are NO charges in the hives.

We already have plans for these.

And we should visit the Nestorium.

Gatebreaker would be better on Brethorius since it gives bonuses for Assaulting fortresses, and he is our Terminator Captain.

Merkon's rifle is basically a promotional tool to make someone captain, I was personally gonna wait until Elegion, our sniper, was back from Deathwatch and he could become 2nd captain.

Agree with red giants Power armour suggestion.

Mark IV power-armour is only really 'fluff-different' to regular Power Armour, I just included it into my story as something interesting.

>Red Giant's Power Armor
You may send it to Nestorium, they claim that purification is possible, however it will require completely diassembling these suits and building them anew. In the end they promise to purify 2d10 power armour suits. Or you could just repaint them... They seem to have no psychic taint that you could notice.
>But first we should ENSURE Inaria is stable and there are NO charges in the hives.
If you stay for 3 months transition period and appoint a new governor(you can do this, because you are vassals of Sector Lord), Inaria will return to normal stability.

I am about to advance year.
>>
>>23091107
The only reason I didn't suggest Brethorius was he always seems to be around us so we are making the decisions and the tactical bonuses would essentially be wasted. Also can it be used with terminator armor or do you need a terminator-specific thunder hammer?

I am for giving Merkon's rifle to a Revenant because of the obvious bonuses right now. It is uncertain if he will even return (I presume we will have to roll on it) and even if he does it is not for a few more years. We can always buy him a nice weapon.

Regarding Mark IV even if it is no better or worse it is at least difference. I would suggest creating an "Emperor's Champion" or similar with this armor just for morale.

Skargan: can you clarify how many Soulkeepers we retained and what exactly we lost? Presumably the Destiny and around ~90 battle brothers?
>>
>>23091205
>I am about to advance year.
NO.
>>
Okay here we go....

We leave Brethorius and his 1st Company on Inaria with 'Morbid' for 3 months to ensure stability, appoint Colonel Zarikoff as Planetary Governer for his unwavering loyalty and determination.

Dispatch the 'Kentauros' to Mars along with a Techmarine in order to get the parts required to fix Prothera.

We, on the 'Aspera Dominus' go to Nestorium to speak with Regon on a number of things:
-Gatebreaker's purity
-Iron warriors Gene-seed purity
-Red Giants Power Armour
-Tell Regon about Messiah, and how he believes we should continue with it
-Ask about exchanging all the MoI machinery for flashy Imperial machinery we badly need.

then FINALLY we return to Mormark and see that all is well with our bro Kerius.

Everybody happy?

Colonel Zarikoff as Planetary Governor seems to be like someone you can trust and rely on. He isn't the most beaurocratically-minded person around and you are pretty sure that he won't be very efficient, but he is loyal and that's what matters. We gain reputation on Inaria: "Friendly".

As soon as you arrive to Nestorium, Fabricator General Regon meets you and agrees to consult you regarding purity of the objects you obtained:
1. Gatebreaker

2. Iron warriors Gene-seed
>This gene-seed is indeed pure and you can use it to create new marines, however please bear in mind, that they will bear characteristics more resembling the Chapter who lost it... What was it's name, you said?
3. Red Giants Power Armour
>We think this armour might have been exposed to dark technologies and is under influence of Ruinous powers, but metal itself is not guilty of this heresy. We can purify some of these.
4. Ask about exchanging all the MoI machinery for flashy Imperial machinery
>We would be happy to provide you with machines and technology for the artifacts you promise us... However please bear in mind that this transaction will remain secret, for some of our brothers are too zealous and narrowminded to understand the meaning of progress.
5. Messiah
>If the machine indeed does what you say it does... Destroy it, or even better - just seal it and leave there to rot for eternity. As much as my heart implant sends negative impulses to my brain when I say this, but even progress has its limits and a dark side. Men of Iron once have shown this to Mankind, I am afraid that they might do it again if we are too proud. Please, whatever you do - be careful, and remember that if it is in post-awakened state, whatever you show or say to it - ir will learn and understand your information, forming its own personality.

1. Question the effects of fusing all 300 geneseed into one
>Well, my friend, if someone would do such a stupid thing and waste THREE HUNDRED(Regon really emphasises the number) good units of geneseed in these times when founding a new chapter takes decades because there is a lack of it... Well, I guess you should ask a proper Magos Biologis, or even a Master Apothecary of your Chapter, Klementhos(he is a magnificent scientist, I might add, an opinion I made from the few conversations I had with him). However I believe, that taking only the best and most clear genetic traits from 300 samples and fusing them for an implant that would be used to augment one person would create something what I would call pseudo-primarch... He would have all the most distinguishing features of his Chapter and he would possess genetical memories worth of 300 brothers that would make him a warrior without match. Or ofcourse it could end in just another rampant mutation.
2. I am not asking to keep the A.I. I am asking you to help me salvage possibly the most advanced tech from it's corpse.
>Abominable intelligence of such level will have supreme survival instincts, I doubt anything could be salvaged from it after it is destroyed... Just bear in mind what the legends tell us about them - they can infect other machine spirits and make them follow their commands! Becareful!
>>
Alright, as said in IRC:

to decide on who gets the MK4 armour, we offer two tests:

the first of courage. The fiercest creature known in this sector is to be found. the brother must be so resolute and fearless, the creature turns tail.

Strength: whoever can lift the heaviest shit wins

Wit: a game of riddles with the chaptermaster.

The whole chapter decides who wins.

There is no other explanation, for nowdays I cannot imagine how would it be possible to extract pure geneseed from a Traitor... >the first of courage. The fiercest creature known in this sector is to be found. the brother must be so resolute and fearless, the creature turns tail.
The fiercest creature in the Core Worlds proved to be Dragondog from Argul IV, an uncivilised world covered in massive forests and swamps. However brother Leutenant Cagirates, who was responsible for organising the transportation of the beasts didn't know, that Dragondogs had no such emotion as fear, their brain was incapable of feeling it, as a results all of the fights were to the death. Once the tournament began, no Astartes would back down or change the rules, because this would put a stain on their honour. As a result we have lost d5 brothers.
>Strength: whoever can lift the heaviest shit wins
This part of the contest went quite well, even though some of the marines resented that something as trivial and stupid as brute strength was chosen, instead of marksmanship, stealth or other skills more fitting a Ghost.
>Wit: a game of riddles with the chaptermaster.
After physical trials all of the contestants who made it through, a total of about 30 marines, had to play a game of riddles with Chapter Master. In the end only four of them, Captain Macedon, Sergeant Harmantos, Waran and Sergeant Diomedes managed to guess all of the riddles given by you. All of them proved themselves equally in battle. Which one will you choose as the champion?

How fortunate then that the last task is stealth related.
They are to stealth into Tombstone and try to make it to Chapter Master's room while the Shadow Guard try to catch them (nonlethal). First one to his quarters wins.

Harmantos manages to reach your room without any problems and approaches you with a smile on his face:
>Milord, it seems I've won. However I do not wish to bear the title of the Champion. If you wish to reward me - please give me the command of 2nd Company with full authority of the Captain. We are like brothers there, united by our blood and by our faith. I know each one of them personally and I am the best to lead them. Choose someone else to be the Champion.

>>23094311
Yes, all of them are.
>>
>>23094345
Brother Harmantos, you are indeed a mighty warrior but this tournament was for the title of Champion. How would it look to the rest of the Chapter if I changed my mind? It would be disingenuous.

You have won the tournament fairly. Do you still wish to be Champion?
>>
>>23094345
>Harmantos, did you find out anything about those Ice Wraiths who took away the crates of civilians? As you said you would last time we spoke personally?
>>
Imperial Guard here. Can you space marines help us out.
>>
>>23094455
>Do you mean that I will be able to become a Captain Champion, milord!? You honour me too much! Ofcourse I do!
>>23094525
>Yes, milord, I've checked all the footage and came to a conclusion, that those were prisoners from one of our secret training operations. They were interrogated and then given away to toil in the factories of Adeptus Mechanicus on Nestorium when we were visiting it. There was simply a mix-up in the hierarchy, because I was just a Sergeant at the time, I wasn't informed of this decision, but now everything was taken care of, you may worry not, milord.

>>23094611
um that isn't what I wrote and you know it

The tournament is for Champion and the shiny new (relatively) Mark IV armor not Captain.

>I see...
Harmantos slowly gets up from his knee and seems to be very sad.
>Then... Then how can I earn the right to be Captain, sir? Didn't I lead men in battle? Didn't I prove that I am loyal and strong and faithful?

>>23094533
Sure we can. What's the problem?
>>
>>23094639
>>23094611
OK more in character:
>No Brother Harmantos you misunderstand. This tournament is only for the title of Champion and the right to wear the Mark IV armor. That is what I told the Chapter and I must abide by my word.

Also did the stealthers reveal any weaknesses in the Tombstone on their way in? If so we should fix.
>>
>>23094725
>Brother Harmantos you have indeed proven loyal and capable but the life of an Astartes is a road: you must take the first step before you can take the last. I will grant you title of Chapter Champion and promote you to Lieutenant. Your company will also be receiving a few reinforcements in the next batch of tactical marines. Come, let us inform the Chapter and celebrate!

>That's the matter, sir... I've spoken with my brothers, and they expressed distrust and certain kind of detachment for the new guys. Yes, they are our brothers and we respect them, but they haven't seen what we have seen and they haven't felt what we have felt. If you do not want to make me a captain, the please - at least do not destroy our little brotherhood and don't give us any replacements. I can assure you that effectiveness of my Company will not suffer from this.

this, then add "If you do well as a lieutenant, you will be granted the second. You have indeed served the Chapter and the Emperor well, but there are rules and forms. Other Lieutenants would be... displeased at being passed up for promotion because of a sergeant. For that is another part of being a Captain: politics, endless politics. being a Lieutenant i think will train you to that task.

Rise, Champion Lieutenant Harmantos, and let us announce to the whole chapter your deeds of glory!"
