Well, it's Tuesday! I'm apparently now sleeping in two to three hour blocks, with civ and wot in between. At some point, I'll be making food, but no one cares about that! haha!

right.

The muted roar of your jet's powerful engines has been almost the only sound on the long flight south. You hit one refueling hitch off the northern eastern coast of Honshu, steering well clear of the combat area over the Kamchatka peninsula. While you're not really worried- both wyverns are armed, after all- it's no fun having to defend a big transport from fighters, especially ones with beyond visual range weapons.

From what you've made out so far, the fighting is brutal- and one sided. The Imperial Japanese Army isn't the horrific war crimes machine it was in the thirties, but they're still very well trained and quite fanatical- Katsumi and Auymi both made it a point to tell you that, should they appear with the squadron publicly, there were several 'rules' that had to be followed. Fortunately, you're also pretty sure you won't be making any public appearances with them while based on the Saratoga. More correctly, you're reasonably sure you can weasel out of them if they do come up.

Merlin's been fine-tuning the magitech suite in the bird, finally getting set up so she can use it to it's full potential. That's why she's been so quiet- girl gets absorbed in her work pretty quickly. The shark twins, above and behind you, have been quiet as well, which is a surprise to you. You figured the two of them would chatter nonstop. There's been some shop talk between Merlin and Clarissa as the two of them work out the tuning of the witch suites, but little else, which you're ok with.

Honestly, you've found the whole thing kind of relaxing. You're sure you'll pay for that later, of course, but for right now, you're happy to accept it. You've been free to let your mind wander, and for a second, you envy Merlin and her book.

Your reverie is broken by Merlin's quiet voice. “H-Hey Frank?” She says, tentatively. “There's some radio traffic you might want to listen to. Sounds like there's something going on not too far from here.”

[] “Not our fight, Merlin. Let's just let the IJN or whoever handle it, huh?”
[] “Yeah, let's listen in. Get the twins in on it too, and see if you can get someone on the transport listening.”

[x] “Yeah, let's listen in. Get the twins in on it too, and see if you can get someone on the transport listening.”

“Yeah, let's listen in Merlin. Go ahead and shoot the twins a call, get them in on it, and see if you can't get hold of someone on the transport.” You say, cursing yourself for enjoying the quiet. Of course you'd jinx it. Of course!

Merlin doesn't respond- she doesn't have to. Inside of a minute, both the twins and the transport crew are listening in- joined shortly after by Katsumi and Ayumi on the transport, because none of you speak Japanese.

Katsumi's voice cuts across the excited, if unintelligible chatter. “It sounds as if elements from the Akagi and Hosho have come up against a new Soviet fighter along with the rest of the air defenses over Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, and they've been driven back against the fleet.”

You can hear the frown in her voice when she continues, moments later. “they are worried because they've lost control of the airspace over the beach landing, and there's an airborne operation en route too. If they can't re-gain air superiority, those paratroops are in big trouble.”

[] “Well, maybe we can do something about that. I'd like to get a look at this new fighter anyway.”

[x] Other! (Ask Ice)

“Katsumi, can you get the boss up there? We need to see what she wants us to do.” You say, looking out over your right wing towards the fight going on a few hundred miles away in that general direction.

“One minute.” She says, followed by the sound of movement as someone hot mics and you hear her yell down from the cockpit for Ice.

You don't hear Katsumi explain the situation- someone must have caught the mic- but Ice's voice is the next you hear.

“Ice here. Katsumi told me what was going on. I'm kind of surprised you didn't just go jetting off.” She says.

“Yeah, well,” you respond. “Trying to set a good example. What do you want us to do? We could probably do some good up there, but I'm not sure we'd have the fuel to make the Sara unless we tanked up again. And we'd have to ditch the external tanks if we got in a scrap.”

“I... I don't know.” Ice responds, sounding terribly unsure, all of a sudden.

“She means to say,” Katsumi cuts in “That you're going to have to make the call. We're well inside the IJA's air defense network, so we don't need the fighter escort.”

[x] “Sounds fine to me. Spellcaster 2 is separating and headed north.”

“Sounds fine to me. Spellcaster two, flight of two is separating and headed north. We'll see you on the ground. C'mon Lissa, let's go pick a fight.” You respond, banking your wyvern north and separating from the transport.

“Sounds good to me.” Alyssa responds, mirroring your movement.

“Us. Sounds good to us.” Her sister adds.

You gradually increase your throttles, stopping short of the A/B line. Still, your airspeed indicator climbs upward steadily, breaking mach 1 very quickly. The familiar shudder of your fighter's wings and tails folding for high speed flight takes a second to pass- the flight computers compensating marvelously for what would otherwise be a really shitty transition.

Merlin, ever on top of things, has been trying to find a way to talk to the IJN fleet elements- without much luck. Language barriers are a bitch like that. Finally, giving up, she sets up a relay with Katsumi, who manages to get you up with some ensign on the IJN Hosho, one of their newest carriers, supposedly better even than the newest CVNs in the US navy. Apparently, this kid is one of the few aboard that speak English fluently.

1/2
>>
“Hosho, this is spellcaster two, flight of two. We're armed and spoiling for a fight. Can you vector?” You call, watching the miles to area melt away under your jet. You're only barely restraining yourself from shaking- you're not sure if you're excited or scared. First time this has ever happened, too.

A very affected drawl greets you. “Ayeeeeeep. This here is IJN hosho pardnur. Callsign Cowboy. Take heading three-three-zero, they's riiiight off the coast. Be careful, one injun's new, we'ins 'callin it Vampire.”

The kid's accent is somewhere between 'Texas' and 'Tokyo' and it leaves a lot to be desired- but morale aboard the fleet's gotta be high if he's still that laid back.

“Roger Cowboy. We're supersonic, be there in five minutes.” You respond, mentally willing your fighter to go faster. “Hey Merlin, start transferring off whatever you can from the wing tanks into the internal tanks, we're gonna have to drop 'em.”

“Got it Frank. There's not too much left in them anyway, just enough to top off one and two. Do you want me to get the sensors up and running?” She, at least, sounds a lot more confident- a lot more like the old Merlin.

You do realize that the Soviets DO have their own R&D for fighters, as well as access to Martian tech, right? They didn't steal ALL of their ideas from the US.

Anyways, the only Vampire fighter on record are old British WWI and WWII era planes. The only other relevant use is that "Vampire" is NATO speak for incoming anti-ship missiles.

[x] “Nah, they don't need to know we're en route yet. Let's keep it a surprise till we're in the fight.”

“Nah, they don't need to know we're on the way just yet.” You respond, hoping that this 'vampire' doesn't have sensors that can pick you up without you knowing it.

The dogfight is low- perilously low. Fighters duck and weave among the ships of the IJN battlegroup, while tracers from CWIS and Radar-controlled AA mounts stab skyward, searching for hostile fighters. One of the carriers- the smaller of the two- belches smoke from a hit along her side, while the larger launches a brace of SAMs that claim a Mig.

The chaos of the dogfight is such that you can't even see the mystery fighter- for all you know, it already separated and you're just wasting your time. You can clearly make out Mig-29s, though. The IJN's F-14J+ and F-4EJ fighters seem to be doing well enough- and it looks like they may be regaining the upper hand here amongst their ships.

“There! Frank, eight low! Look!” Merlin cries, and you instinctively crane your neck around to where she directed.

Below, a fighter latches onto the tail of a pair of Japanese tomcats, staying with them despite their pilot's evasive maneuvers. Gunfire erupts from the wing roots of the fighter, chewing into the tail of one tomcat, causing it to rapidly come apart in mid-air, it's crew ejecting a split second before their fighter begins a death roll. The other tomcat, now alone, banks hard and dives for the deck, not too far below.

“That's gotta be it! Man, look at him go!” Alyssa says. “I want a piece of that! C'mon Frank, let's get into it!”

[] “Fine. Stay on my wing, let's see if we can nail this guy.”

And an entire IJN fleet with SAMs and CIWS systems, too.

[x] “Fine. Stay on my wing, let's see if we can nail this guy.”

You have to admit, her energy is infectious. You clamp down on the shakes with an iron fist, forcing your body to bend to your will- your hands stop wanting to tremble, your heart resumes it's resting rate, and that sharp pain in your side subsides.

“Stay on my wing, Lissa. Let's get this guy.” You snarl, rolling inverted and jamming your throttles forward.

He's good, and in a bleeding edge jet. But he's distracted- the second 'cat pilot is an artist, damn near reversing it on the Soviet pilot more than once. He keeps the mystery mig tied up enough that you get a shot on it- your nose guns roaring their challenge across the sky.

The soviet pilot jinks at the last second, suddenly aware the fight's gone up a notch. Breaking into your attack, he dives, gaining airspeed and bringing his aircraft below the decks of most of the ships- meaning their guns are having trouble tracking him.

You have no such trouble, but this guy is good, you grudgingly admit. Switching to Agiles, you're still unable to gain a shot as he twists around the bow of the Hosho, disappearing yet again from your tracking HMD.

Around you, the dogfight rages- the IJN fighters, now free of the predatory super mig, are reaping a fierce toll on the soviet aircraft.

The Mig's slowly gaining separation- either he's just faster than you, or he's cutting his turns closer- it's scant few feet at a time, almost nothing in real meaning, but it's something that’ll build against you, eventually allowing him to turn the tables.

You, unlike the soviet pilot, are able to keep situational awareness- one of the advantages of a two-seat aircraft. It's why, when a Fulcrum dives in on you, he only gets two rounds into- causing Merlin to scream- you before you turn clear of his guns and the twins smoke his ass. You feel a slight vibration, and there's no wind. Can't be a cockpit hit. Can't be.

Still, that "dogfighting is dead" attitude was a major cause of the frankly PATHETIC American kill-ratio in the early stages of 'Nam. Now don't get me wrong, I LIKE the 22, I just get hinky whenever people try to say that it'd never need to dogfight. And the F-4 WAS pretty fucking stealthy for it's day. It basically wrote the book on "kill 'em BVR".

They actually fixed that. Right before the gubmint cut the funding and put it into the F-35 Shitning.
>>
>>23134203
That's adorable. As Red Flag Alaska Fall 2012 proved that thrust vectoring means absolutely nothing if the plane is not designed to take advantage of it in a close quarters fight. Also: They said the same thing about the F-4 in 'Nam and look how that turned out? At least they didn't pull the guns this time.

[x] “You Ok Merlin? We need to stay in this if you are!”

“Merlin! Merlin talk to me!” You cry, fighting to stay on the 'vampire'.

“C'mon Merlin, say something!” You fight to banish the images of your RIO, dead or dying behind you.

“I... I think I'm ok.” Her voice, tiny and brittle comes back. “I-It hurts, Frank.”

“Shit! Lissa! How bad does it look?” You call, not yet willing to let this guy go.

“It doesn't look like he got a piece of either of you- we don't see any damage to the cockpit area. You've got some damage your forward canard, and it looks like a hole in your wing, right about at the pivot.” Your wingmate says. “You're not leaking anything, and it doesn't look like you're on fire.”

It jives with your plane's damage management systems- you've got a few yellow lights, but nothing red. Even the wing sweep looks like it's still functional. Silently, you curse your limited visibility into the back seat- your one mirror just doesn't let you see anything other than the top of Merlin's helmeted head as she sits, slumped against her straps.

“Merlin, don't lie to me. How bad is it?” You demand, watching the fight thin out above you. With their superjet tied up, the mig pilots have proven to be no match for the pilots of the IJN- while a few more tomcats and modernized phantoms have gone down, you suspect the claims will favor the Japanese.

“I... I don't think I'm bleeding.” She says, her voice still straining.

“Fine. We're setting down as soon as we can, alright?” You say, trying to help her as much as you can.

“I... yeah. O-ok Frank.” She agrees.

The super mig, by now, has gained enough separation that he makes a break for it- dodging a pair of missiles shot after him by a IJN cruiser, staying low and headed west, probably back to the mainland. The remaining migs start to bug out, the fight lost.

“Cowboy, looks like you're clear. We’re headed to Yokota Airbase, mind calling ahead for us?” You call across the airwaves, sounding a lot more put-together than you feel.

“Noooo prob, pardnur.” The ensign responds, his accents still hilariously clashing. “We'll send up some signals and make sure they'ins don't go stickin a posse on yah. Much obliged fur yer help.”

You don't bother responding, instead turning south, and dropping the throttles back out of the afterburner range. Short as it was, that fight burnt through a lot of fuel- enough that the Saratoga would be a bit of a stretch. And with the possibility of Merlin being wounded, you're not going to risk trying to fly that far.

You cross feet dry over the coast shortly after that, covering the almost eight hundred miles in a little over an hour.

Merlin, thankfully, is still talking at the end of the flight- you'd decided if she became unresponsive, you'd land at the nearest airfield, cleared or not. On the ground, news has apparently preceded you- you can see the flashing lights of crash vehicles on the tarmac, and the runway has been cleared, specially-designed snow clearing equipment being brought into play to make your landing as easy as possible.

Your wheels kiss the ground with their familiar squeal, and you hardly slow down to taxi, following the marshal's lights into a hangar next to the bulk of the transport. Inside, IJAF medics wait near a parked ambulance, with Goose and Ayumi next to them.

You jolt to a stop, handling most of the hurried shut down yourself- popping your canopy seals as your turbine fans were still spinning down. Hammering the quick release on your straps, you stand in your seat, swinging one leg over the lip of the cockpit planting a boot on the ladder rung as the ground crew hustles to push a rolling ladder up to the back seat.

Merlin slowly unbelts herself, favoring her right side.

[x] “Hey. I'm riding with you to medical, alright?”

“Hey. Merlin. I'm riding with you to medical, alright?” You say gently, helping her pull the last of her straps clear.

“I.. I think I'm fine, Frank. Really.” She protests, weakly. You're forced to smile at that, reaching down and scooping her up.

“Yeah, sure you are. You might be able to fool everyone else, but you ain't fooling me.” You say, noting the distinct lack of blood in the cockpit with a huge sense of relief.

You hand her off to the medics, who put her on a stretcher and wheel her into the waiting ambulance- looks aside, they'll want to give her a once-over, just to make sure there's nothing wrong. You're right behind them in climbing in- the EMTs both glare at you, but don't try and make you leave.

The ride to the on-post hospital is short, thankfully, and before long, Merlin's in with a doctor while you wait less than patiently outside. They're not in there long before the doctor opens the door and motions you in.

“Lieutenant commander.” He says, by way of greeting. “The young Lieutenant here looks fine, and her X-rays are clear. We'd like to keep her overnight, though. Just to be on the safe side.”

[] “Done. I'm staying here with her, though.”
[] “Well, what about it Merlin. You want to stay here, or head back to the squadron?”

It shouldn't be more than a short trip to the Sara. We've got the ship's docs, the squadron for moral support, and possibly a better line back to China Lake to talk about feedback from the Wyvern's magic focus.
>>

Staying here will only help exacerbate Merlin's dependance on us. I would suggest we head back to the carrier and start looking into that feedback issue and have a healwitch look into her. It might be advisable to discretely get a hold of Georgette if we can and ask her about this as as well.

The pain might actually be phantom and triggering something.

[x] “Well, what about it Merlin. You want to stay here, or head back to the squadron?”

“Well, what do you think, Merlin? Do you want to stay here or head back to the squadron?” You ask, turning to face your RIO.

She makes a face, scrunching up her nose closing her eyes. “I.. let's go back to the squadron, Frank.” She finally says. “Goose can help if something happens.”

You nod. “Alright. Sounds fair to me. Doc?”

The doc nods. “I assumed you were going to say that. As near as I can tell, she's perfectly healthy. I'll let the desk know you're headed out.

You nod, and wait for Merlin to collect her flight bag and helmet from the desk before you head downstairs. Goose and Ayumi are waiting to pick you up.

“Are you ok, Sam?” Goose asks, a worried look on her face. “I-I can help if you're hurt!”

Merlin smiles and shakes her head. “I'm ok. I don't know what that was.” Still, as she says it, she edges a little closer to you.

Ayumi, meanwhile, just hands you a dispatch.

You look down at the paper, then back up at her, then back down at the paper.

“Ayumi... this....” You say.

She glares at you briefly, before looking away. “Well, supposedly you earned it. ”

You chuckle. “Ayumi, this is in Japanese. I can't read it.”

“Oh.” She takes the paper back out of your hands. And glances over it. “It's a dispatch putting you two up for the order of the golden kite. The admiral of the battlegroup is stating that without your intervention, casualties among his pilots would have been much worse, and the landing forces at the beach and the paratroopers would have likely suffered severely as well.”

But molotov cocktails are Finnish. Their name was a play on People's Commissar for Foreign Affairs Vyacheslav Molotov, who claimed in domestic propaganda that the Russian air force was not dropping incendiaries and cluster bombs, but rather delivering food to starving Finns. The Finns weren't starving, and they started sarcastically calling the bombs "Molotov Bread Baskets". Then when they dreamed up the Molotov Cocktail to kill tanks, they named it such as a joke, "a drink to go with the bread".

You're really not in the mood for her shit, but it seems like calling her out, here, on her home soil, would be kinda rude. Not to mention a bad idea. Plus, Merlin isn't hurt, and you're perilously low on fucks to give.

So, instead of taking her to task, you laugh. “Haha, yeah. Yeah, we kinda do.” You agree. “But when we get going, well...” You trail off.

Goose giggles again. “It's ok. I think they're funny! Though Patty wasn't real happy with them when they left that bucket of cold water on the door. Or when they set off a stink bomb in her underwear drawer.”

“They really like messing with Her, huh?” you ask, and goose nods emphatically.

“Yeah! They've tried to get me to help a few times, but I don't want her mad at me. Oh! Hey! Here we are. Over here!” She runs over to one of three identical buildings just down the road a bit.

The three buildings are large enough that they look like the can comfortably house the squadron, and identical enough that you know they're for military use.

Goose explains. “They're for visiting witches studying with the IJNAF. Well, that's what miss Katsumi said, anyway.”

Inside, you notice straight off that the building feels like a civilian house, not like a military barracks. There's no duty desk, and most of the squadron- minus Katsumi and Ayumi- are present and watching the TV.

The news coverage is, predictably, of Europe and the middle east, and details the renewed soviet push on Berlin. While the NATO line hasn't broken- yet- it's been steadily shoved back under the onslaught, and has suffered it's fair share of casualties. Meanwhile, the middle east has truly blown wide open, with Iraqi armor blitzing across the desert and into Saudi Arabia.
