>ANNOUNCEMENTS: Action should pick up now. Thank a certain article of headware.

You are Kylan Arvus, former Lieutenant of the Terran Federation Marine Corps, and a Chimaera. You used to be human but after a run in with an Icorani Queen (Giant Psychic Bug) you nearly died and were put back together using alien DNA by the Sophons, a technologically superior isolationist race. After finding out that you had spent about 50 years floating through space in a coma, you struck a deal with the Sophons to provide them with data on your new body in exchange for some credits, gear, and an identity within the Galactic Republic. After testing, you also went on a pseudo-date with Decala, a Sophon psionics expert. You then browsed the Sophon Information Archives, compiling all the data into a handy wristcom given to you. You then returned to the hospital ward to get some shut-eye before the courier vessel designated to take you to Brental arrives.

“Daddy!”

The children’s voices bring a warm feeling to your heart as you walk up the driveway of your little suburban house. Two blonde haired children run down the walkway to meet you and with a playful growl you scoop them both up and swing them around. They squeal and struggle but the looks on their faces tell you they love it.
You set them both down and kneel in front of them as they turn to face you. Matthias, the boy, has just turned six and while Elise, his younger sister, had her fourth birthday last week. You couldn’t make it.

“Adam!” You hear a voice call out.

You your head turn to face your wife as she walks out of the house. You admire her, as it’s the first time you’ve seen her in person in over a year. Everything about her, from the bright gold of her hair to the way the blue sundress hugs her full figure, seems more real, more alive. Her golden eyes are suffused with joy, after all, you came back alive. She smiles at you and you stand up and move forward. She stretches out both hands and places them on your face, the soft skin of her palms sending electric tingles through your cheeks.

“I missed you,” She whispers.

“I missed you too.” You respond and slowly lean in to kiss her.

nO! Shouts a voice that is simultaneously everywhere and nowhere. No! tHesE ArE mY ThOuGhTS! My MeMoRieS! GiVe tHeM bAcK!

The world around you freezes and grows jagged and edged. Parts of it are replaced by static and white noise. Then it explodes.

The very real explosion in the Med Bay knocks you out of your bed and onto the floor. You, despite your disorientation from your dream, roll into a crouch and take a look around. Lighting has become irregular and disjointed as the strips in the ceiling fail and come back online. Smoke trickles in from under the sealed doorway.

You are clad only in light pants for sleeping. Your garments are neatly folded next to your bed.

You quickly get dressed, slide your sunglasses onto your face, and slap your wristcomp on and check it for messages. The holographic screen materializes and you quickly key into the station’s communications network. Strangely, it’s completely silent. You refresh to make sure when suddenly, the closed door on the far side of the room opens and a strange figure steps inside.

It’s clad in thick armor but some parts of it appear to be exposed. It appears to be both avian and reptilian. In one hand glows a yellow energy shield and the other is occupied by a heavy rifle. As soon as it sees you it screeches and raises its gun.

It’s clad in thick armor but some parts of it appear to be exposed. It appears to be both avian and reptilian. In one hand glows a yellow energy shield and the other is occupied by a heavy rifle. As soon as it sees you it screeches and raises its gun.

You duck as a beam of light lances through the air just above your head and hits some medical instruments behind you. They explode with an almighty flash and you duck behind your bed again.

“Woah, dude, what the fuck!?” You cry out as you peak your head around the corner of your futon.

You quickly roll behind another bed on the opposite side of the room as another bolt of energy pierces through the space your head had just occupied a moment ago. You raise a hand up and over the edge of the mattress and let loose some lightning from your hands. You hear a shrieking hiss and smile despite yourself. You jump up to let loose another, stronger bolt but the alien maneuvers the shield in front of its head at the last moment, deflecting the bolt out the door.

Deciding to go on the offensive, you vault over the bed and sprint forward. The alien is aiming its rifle at you again but at the last second you launch a psionically accelerated kick at its gun hand, knocking the weapon up and away. You then grab it by the throat and slam it into wall next to the door, stunning it and causing it to drop its shield.

"What's going on? I want answers." You growl.

All you get in response is snarling and hissing that you can’t understand.

The alien struggles against your grip, snarling all the while. You quickly slam your forehead into its face, stunning it, then snap its neck. Turning to the equipment it dropped, you pick up the rifle. It’s a long, angular thing with an unusual handle at the back and a contrived targeting system. You realize that the handle enables you to use the weapon with only one hand. There is a marker on the rifle’s targeter with five tags on it. You then pick up the small shield handle that the creature dropped and try to activate it. Unfortunately, nothing happens.

Tossing it aside, you pick up what appears to be a small case of energy cells from the alien’s corpse. Attaching them to your belt, you take a look around the room. The lights have gone out on the far side of the medbay, plunging half of the room into darkness. There are a few burns from the alien firing the rifle at you scarring the room.

The hallway outside the room is dark and smoky. It’s hard to make out anything.

You raise your wristcomp again to try and tap into the communications network once more. You still find absolutely nothing. You pull up a map of the Carpath in an attempt to find the nearest security point.

There’s one on this level on the other side of the station and one on the level below, almost directly underneath you. You note another point, marked “ARMORY” on the map below you but near the elevators.

Suddenly, you feel as though something is near. You sense the electrical currents in the immediate area as they go towards feeding the various systems around you. But there’s something else, moving down the hallway. Something drawing large amounts of power from its core. It walks toward your room and enters.

It looks like it used to be a turian, but somewhere along the line somebody replaced most of its limbs with machine equivalents and gave it flashlight eyes. In your psionic senses, the creature is a sore, something that shouldn’t exist.

And it’s standing within arms reach of you.

Entirely on instinct, you raise the beam rifle to your shoulder and fire a shot into its torso. The beam pierces through it, causing the creature to stagger back. A second shot, and it falls over, shot through the chest. Your last shot pierces it right between the eyes, killing it.

You turn and run out into the hallway. Immediately, you’re plunged into near total darkness that even your enhanced vision can’t penetrate after you stow your sunglasses away. The air is smoky and clings close but still breathable. You’re fairly certain you’d be choking an coughing if you were still human. Making your way towards what your wristcomp says is the Armory, you fail to notice something lying on the ground and end up tripping over it. Picking yourself up, you realize that you just tripped over a Sophon corpse.

Quickly, you inspect the body and search it for anything that might be of use. You quickly determine what killed the poor bugger, a single shot straight through the torso, but are unable to find anything of use. It appears that the person was a simple civilian, gunned down without a second thought.

Just as you rise from your inspection, you hear a strange hissing growl. Whirling around, you see a flash of blue light as something leaps through the air towards you. It slams into you with a thud, knocking away your rifle and closing its hands around your throat. It looks like a grotesque humanoid, pale and studded with cybernetics. Despite its weak appearance, it is very strong. That same palpable feeling of wrongness exudes from its frame.

You grab the creature’s head and try and force electrical energy through its frame. But you can’t. The palpable wrongness of the being is suppressing your abilities, keeping them from manifesting properly. You’re sure you could but the beast is currently throttling you so it’s quite a bit harder. With your airway cut off it’s much harder to concentrate. You feel your limbs growing heavy and your vision growing dark. But you muster up a titanic burst of strength from deep within yourself and grab the creature’s head. You pull with all your might and suddenly the head comes free, pulling out the spine and cybernetics and splashing you with black ichor. The monster shrieks and thrashes futilely before slumping down and lying still.

>Not dead, just taking care of shit.

You groan as you get to your feet. Your throat hurts and you don’t doubt you’ll be bruised there later. You take a deep breath and pick the beam rifle up from where it had fallen and continue down the corridor. The darkness does not abate and the smoke only seems to grow thicker at you continue. A few times you swore you could hear the scratching and scrabbling of claws on metal but nothing ever appeared. Most of the time you only hear the groaning of metal and your breathing. You stick close to walls, creeping forward at a steady pace and doing your best make sure that you aren’t seen. You find corpses every now and then, always Sophons.

Suddenly, you can see a little bit of the space around. A light source coming from somewhere up ahead is thinning the darkness and providing a little respite from the smoke. You approach it, and soon you find yourself in front of a wide window. Below you, the planet rotates unmolested. Above you floats a massive ship.

Easily 40 kilometers long, it resembles a pitch black squid, or a cuttlefish. Around it float the remnants of the Sophon ships that defended the station. As you watch, you feel something, that same wrongness that pervaded the various creatures you encountered. It rises and roils and pulses from the ship in front of you. Slowly, the behemoth moves, turning to face the main body of the elevator itself. The curling tentacles in front of the ship part and a massive red beam shoots forward, slicing through the main body of the elevator. You hear the explosion from where you are and the shockwave successfully knocks you over.
Suddenly, you’re floating. Makes sense, the elevator would likely provide energy for the Grav Generators and without them, you’ll be in perpetual free fall. You look out the window again, but the ship has disappeared.

You twist your torso to right yourself with the floor and give yourself a little nudge with your TK, just enough for you to get moving. Foot and handholds set into the walls enable you to propel yourself without expending too much energy. You finally reach the elevator shafts. But in front of them, sitting on its hind haunches, is a massive creature. You’re not sure what it was before, but it’s covered in cybernetics and metal and has what looks like a turian head stuck to mechanical spine in the center. It doesn’t seem to have noticed you yet.

Deciding that force is the best solution, you quickly take aim and fire a shot at the creature’s torso. It hits and the monster is now facing you. You fire another shot at its head and cause it to jerk back but it doesn’t fall. In fact, it gets up and propels itself towards you with a mighty shove of its legs. You sight down the barrel and pull the trigger again.

Nothing happens. Cursing, you realize that you’re out of ammo. You must be getting rusty. Quickly, you use TK to move yourself to the side but aren’t fast enough to avoid the swinging claw that catches you in the side. Your gun is knocked from your hand and you go spinning as floating globules of blood fill the air around you. It’s not that deep, but the cut does wake you up a little. You duck out of the way of another swipe, and toss a glowing blue psypunch at the monster. It glances off the armor plates on the creatures arm, but the force is enough to knock it back. Looking around, you notice a small in the metal of the wall. You grasp the gash with your mind and peel a jagged strip off. You wait patiently for the beast to charge once more. It obliges you, propelling itself with its long misshapen limbs. It gains speed bearing down at you with all the force of a freight train. At the very last second, you toss yourself out of the way and slam the metal strip into the spine. The creature’s body slams into the wall, and its head bounces off the ceiling.

You take a moment to catch your breath and feel your side. The pain has receded, and upon closer inspection, the wound has stopped bleeding. Probably due to your unusual genome. You pick up the beam rifle from where it had landed, and reload it, nodding when 8 tick marks appear on its reticule. You turn to look at the elevator shaft. The grav-lift’s doors have been torn off and the yawning shaft is filled with the same smoke that had dominated the previous areas. In fact, this is the only area where the smoke is clearer. Strange.
