You are Ssen, a Lamia raised by a human Paladin who adopted you after killing the ones who birthed you. You are grown now, and Father has passed on. You have decided to see the world, and possibly become a Paladin like your Father.

You are accompanied by your best friend from childhood, the insect druid Tricia; Mage, a magic user who ran away from his family of cannibal raiders known as the Ghouls (Yes, his name is Mage. It was his idea); Persephone, a 22-year old thief/ex-guerllia fighter (She goes by Peri), and Mary, a 13-year old prodigy scholar/now sniper, who has her mind and soul trapped within Peri's body; and Lea, a deeply religious musician/martial artist, trained by her father, a famous trainer for arena fighter, she's covered from her mouth down in bandages to hide the horrific state her body has become thanks to the 'cures' that saved her from cancer.

Your journey continues...

You have ended the Ghoul occupation of Stone Hall, and once more are heroes. The title of "Liberator of Stone Hall" can now be added to your growing list of accolades. Mage also has managed to unlock his shackle, though he chooses to keep it, and his chained staff on. Mostly because he's used to the feel...and you think that he thinks it makes him look cool.

You have been staying at Stone Hall to help with the rebuilding and to aid the lizard people in their integration to the surface. Uncle Julian has been called away to Grand Citadel for an 'evaluation of his actions,' and the Paladin Bobbi Odette, the only person more snake-like than you, has gone as well. You also discover that she tried to get you killed during the attack. Of course, that knowledge does you no good. The slimy woman has admitted her attempt to shell you to the other Paladins, passing it off as an honest mistake made in the chaos of war. At the very least, Paladin Avery took your information about the Humors seriously.

You then went to talk to the old Naga that leads the lizard people. You find 'Granny' talking to the Fifth Humor, and learn about the people who seem to have been behind the attack on Purple Sands, and Stone Hall.

The Humors are a cabal of humans who concieve, create, and guide the incidents that cause the Lightbringer 'sagas' to happen. Granny says that they're not meant as tales to entertain children and inspire adults, but rather a very elaborate form of human sacrifice. The Humors do this to feed, and appease, their master, the Citadel Kingdom itself.

Granny claims that Citadel is a semi-aware being, and one that acts like a petulant child who demands to hear the same bedtime story over and over again. Throwing a massive temper tantrum if even the tiniest detail changes.

As long as it gets it, Citadel thrives, there are no disasters, and little strife. Leaders are kind, wise, and virtuous. The Lightkeeper Priests and the Paladins are moral beacons of purity, and most importantly (To the Humors) the kingdom continues to grow.

When the Lightbringer 'story' changes, Citadel lashes out. Fears and hates start to bubble up, people like Paladin Odette are able to succeed, and Granny implies that worse will come.

Also, that Citadel is now starting to notice you.
>>
>>23768358
"You're going to have to be careful now," Granny says as she moves around her room. "The Humors aren't like the comically overblown villains that you've faced down. If they think someone's a threat to their precious Citadel," She tries to hide it, but you can see the brief glance at the pictures of the people she keeps on the wall. "Then they show no mercy, and a ruthless efficiency. I'm a little shocked that you actually got one to turn traitor, of course the Fifth says that it was more of his own guilt than any action you took." She drums her fingers on her side.
"Do you want some unsolicited advice?"
>>
What happened to doing these at night! It is 10:30AM here and I have to work!

Also, if the advice is unsolicited then it won't matter what we say heh.
>>
>>23768387
"Well, the definition of unsolicited advice is advice that wasn't asked for, so it probably doesn't matter if I say yes or no, does it?"
>>
>>23768432
"It doesn't matter what I say, will it?" You say.

Granny shakes her head.

"Heh, go ahead." You say.

"Back off. For now." Granny says, she starts to slither out of her room and she motions for you to follow. "The Humors' strength doesn't change if you disrupt their 'story' or not, and Citadel can and WILL make your life hell if it manages to sense you as a threat. Right now, you've actually been helpful, solving the Stone Hall problem that the Humors created. I'd let them think that they've got things under control for now. You'll get your shot at them...but you have to time it right, or else you'll end up hurt or your people will." She sighs. "This is the voice of experience talking. So, I'd wait until they're distracted with the job of fixing the royal cock up that the 'Lightbringer saga' has become."
>>
>>23768485
She stops, you're at the big open area of the Undercity, this is where the old reptile had you fight her, and then completely dominated you. "So, that's what I have on the Humors and Citadel, you have any more questions, or do we move onto the next topic of today's discussion?"
>>
Off topic: I'm a perpetual lurker who's absolutely loving the story, but I think I'm missing a part of it. Did part nine get archived? And if this question was answered in part nine, feel free to ignore it.

On topic: "Do you think the paladins will honor that contract, even when it ruins the citidale's bedtime story?"
>>
>>23768507
Ask if she knows anything about the official protagonists of this story. Ester mentioned how she sent them packing easily.
>>
>>23768507

Sorry for not being super engaged, I want to but I can't really be paying attention to this right now.

I think the best time to run this would be at the usual afternoon/evening time. That is when most of your regular players will not be at work or otherwise engaged.

For reference, I usually follow/lurk but don't play. I really enjoy reading this quest!
>>
What happens if the current variations in the tale isn't due to the Humors or others mucking it up, and Citadel has finally grown bored of the same old Lightbringer story?
>>
>>23768696
"Do you think the paladins will honor that contract, even when it ruins the citidale's bedtime story?"

Granny shrugs as she gets two wooden swords out. "I don't know, Citadel can't control people's minds, and the Paladins aren't aware of the Humors. In fact, the faith of the Light and His Teachings predate Citadel. I don't know how much Citadel has changed it, but if you believe in God, in whatever form, he was here first." She tosses you one of the practice swords. "The moral dilemma of course, is that is stopping the Humors equal to the Cups Guild's more radical cures, like they did for your bandaged friend. We live in a Golden Age, and what's a small village and a few people compared to that? When you see Grand Citadel yourself, you'll understand it a bit easier, but if the Lightbringer stories stop, a lot of people are going to suffer and die."
>>
>>23768781
I believe that there is a plan behind all of this.

Also, as I will have to run soon, can someone suggest we visit mage sis after this?
>>
>>23768805
By that I meant the Light has a plan - Even if citadel falls into chaos, even if the world appears to burn, I believe there is a future predestined for us. We just have to venture out believing things will get better.
>>
>>23768781

"I have a few more questions, but they are unrelated to the Humors mess."

"You mentioned falling to our baser nature, the greedy ones, would using my venom or constricting enemies to death cause me to start to... lose my focus and start to become like them?"
>>
As a random aside, this reminds me too much of this song.

"I believe that there is a plan behind all of this.
That the Light has a plan - Even if citadel falls into chaos, even if the world appears to burn, I believe there is a future predestined for us. We just have to venture out believing things will get better."

"Your father's teachings?" She nods. "Always wondered why the Humors and Citadel caused all those other sects of the Occuli to form around the Caligo Clarus so quickly. Maybe that's partially why you've gotten so far."

"I have a few more questions, but they are unrelated to the Humors mess." You ask. "You mentioned falling to our baser nature, the greedy ones, would using my venom or constricting enemies to death cause me to start to... lose my focus and start to become like them?"

She smiles. "Ah, now we come to the next subject, first though..." She gestures with her practice sword, I want to see what the little worm can do with a weapon.
>>
>>23768937
Humour her. Try not to be as much of a buffoon as last time. We know we will lose, but we will still try.

We should also ask about her story - being rescued from the sand, living in the human world, ect. It should be a good lesson for us as we are going through the same journey she did long long ago.
>>
Woohoo! Caught onto Lamia Quest when I am awake!
>>
>>23768979
exactly, and we might learn something while we get our ass handed to us.
>>
>>23768979
You take a deep breath and prepare yourself. This isn't like before, when Granny just wanted to have some fun. This is a spar, and the point of sparring IS to get knocked on your ass. You remember how much you felt betrayed when Father beat you, the first time you did this with him. Then he helped you up, and explained.

You do a regular strike, and Granny moves to block, then you do a little twist and alter the path of your blade. Granny twists the same way and manages to block. You back up and do a collection of quick probing jabs, and then swap into a different style. Granny keep up, deflecting every blow, and then she engages you with a style you've never seen before in your life. You try to keep up, but two out of every five blows get through, and Granny stops when her sword is at your neck.

"Good." She says. "Your form is excellent, my compliments to your father for actually training you properly." She says. "You know how to fight as a human, now...you need to learn how to fight as one of us." Then she demonstrates a sword stance and a kind of practice kata. "This will feel odd, as I'm trying to pop certain parts of your body into alignment. You've been holding yourself as a human for so long, you've not used some of the extra joints that you have."

You do the kata and you do feel something in your elbow and shoulder pop. It's not unpleasant though, just strange.

(more coming)
>>
>>23769193
"As for your question about the venom and constricting enemies, of course not. There's a difference between using what nature, or the Light, gave you, and being base. You wrap up some asshole who's trying to kill you, and crunch him to death? Fine, just the same as a man stabbing him with a sword. You biting someone to take him down? Same example. Now, you you then slowly eat the man afterwards, provided that you aren't starving, just to satisfy your own desires and urges? That's something you should probably not do. Stick with food on your plate."

"So, what's your story then?" You ask as you do the kata again. "Rescued from the sand, living in the human world."

Granny sighs. "It was...it was a life. Lots of joy, lots of sorrow, exciting times, dull ones, love and heartbreak. Much the same as any other, just much much longer. The details...those are a little private. One difference is that the Caligo Clarus as a whole raised me, instead of one person. I was their mascot, at first...then a bit more. I miss them. I miss all of them." She sighs. "Alright, now, try doing this, now that your body's remembering what it should be." She does that sword move she used earlier.

You copy it, not as flawless as she did, but close.

She nods. "Alright, again...any more questions about what we are?"
>>
(damn, got to go, back in a few hours)
>>
>>23769199
Awww, she is just like a mother-figure to us! Teaching us the way of our people, wisdom through the ages... We need to give her a hug at the end of it. I should let other anons ask questions. We could also learn about the Light in the Darkness order from her. And what happened to it.
>>
>>23769199
Granny, is it possible to save our people? To help them the same way we are helped out of our beastial nature?
>>
>>23769199
"Everything."
We know nothing, apparently not even how to stand properly.
Oh, and importantly: "Are there others who resist their natures like us?"
>>
>>23769199

What's the difference between a Naga and a Lamia? I read a book on it, but I'm pretty sure the author was a racist asshole.

What kind of reception should I expect if I meet other Naga or Lamia that weren't raised as I was?
>>
>>23769284
"Granny, is it possible to save our people? To help them the same way we are helped out of our beastial nature?" You say.

"Lower your elbow." She says moving you arm. "Most of them, no. A lot of it is Citadel. If you let yourself be a monster, Citadel rewards you with food, power, base pleasures, and lets you grow or lengthen, and that enhances everything. It's too tempting, and should the be gone...a lot will lash out. Some of them...maybe. We have to let them have a chance though, as it is, it takes a fluke to save them. Nearly every 'monster race' in Citadel kills their children when they are attacked. Citadel doesn't want their Paladins or heroes to have difficult problems, and...yes, like that...and Citadel can't tell what we're thinking." She takes her own stance and motions for you to being a new assault on her. "Which is why you should probably keep your friends in the dark about this as long as you can. If Citadel senses a human that hates it? They'll die." She nods. "That's also experience."
>>
>>23769364
We are fighting a piece of land, the traditions of an age old empire, or the spirit of a kingdom? Fighting for a better future for monsters and humans in the name of a higher power? All of this as an ideological battle rather than a physical battle?

Why is this quest so awesome?
>>
>>23769364
So humans Citadel can read, but not monsters?
>>
>>23769296
>>23769346

"Are there others who resist their natures like us?" You ask as you attack. You do better, but still can't land a hit on the old woman. When she returns fire, you do better, but she still ends up with her sword at your neck.

"You need to flex your waist more. Remember your spine and ribs aren't as stiff as you think they are...your armor should be adjusted a bit for that. Try scale mail instead of chain or leather, if you can stand the jokes." She shows you another kata.

"I've heard stories of other monsters who try." She says. "You're the first lamia, and I've never heard of another Naga. But there are goblins, orcs, the rare creatures known as 'infernals,' ask any you can find stories of them in the Conclave." She nods at your progress. "They end up in a few ways, they give up the struggle and return to their homes, they decide that if the world thinks them a villain, then they become one and give in, or..." At this Granny sneers. "The Humors make them Lightbringers."

"Is there a difference between Nagas and Lamias? I read a book on it, but I'm pretty sure the author was a racist asshole."

"They usually are, no no, down here..." Her firm hands gently manipulate your body. "Bend here...yes...again. Our scales are different, our bodies are better suited for certain temperatures, and you have more cartilage in your body as opposed to me. On the other hand, I can develop my muscle tissue better. I'm strong, you're quick."

"What kind of reception should I expect if I meet other Naga or Lamia that weren't raised as I was?"

"If they're bigger than me, or longer than 24 to 30 feet? Bite them, as fast as you can." She says. "Best sign to tell how sane one of us is, the bigger or longer we are, the further they've given in."
>>
>>23769476
"So humans Citadel can read, but not monsters?"

"Read is a tricky word, remember you can't think of Citadel as a human." She says. "Okay now while you bend I want you to swing your arm...yes like that. Now, again." She nods. "But Citadel understands humans easier. So it can tell if people hate it from actions, words, and so on. Citadel 'thinks' that we're evil monsters, so it assumes that we're evil and moves on. Except in your case...congratulations. That's why I suggest playing along. The Humors are dangerous enough. They've kicked my ass...multiple times."
>>
>>23769428
So we are Moses?
>>
>>23769482
Make them light bringers?

Why then are monsters still treated so poorly? If their heroes are monsters?
>>
>>23769557
Or are you speaking of yourself?
>>
>>23769557
"Make them Lightbringers? Why then are monsters still treated so poorly? If their heroes are monsters?"

She motions for another attack session. Granny's changed her style and is going faster now, so it goes pretty poorly, it's worse when she does this move where she aims her tail at your arm while she swings, You block, but the tail impact knocks the blade out of your hand.

"Let me see your tail whip."

You do the move you and Lea created.

"And you and the monk designed that on your own?" She nods. "Okay, it's not bad, but you're using the wrong muscle." She adjusts your body and has you flex a different part of your tail. "This one will give you better control."

"That's a trick of the Humors. If you look at the Lightbringer stories, you'll never see Orcs or Harpies or anyone else. You'll see HALF-Orcs and HALF-Harpies. Creatures who everyone credits their morality from their human half, who's parents were always cruelly raped by the monster in question. Nuture over nature."
>>
>>23769629
Are there other land spirits for other areas, such as the First Wood, or Stone Deep?

Can the spirit of the land be changed? Through the belief of its people? Or how can we even resist it? Do we have to all pack up and leave to escape its influence?
>>
>>23769664
Quit channeling Moses and the Exodus anon.
>>
>>23769664
I am just asking questions to wait for other anons to join so we have better things to ask.
>>
>>23769664
"Are there other land spirits for other areas, such as the First Wood, or Stone Hall?"

"Keep working that muscle, yeah, try to hit my hand." She holds up her hand and each time you hit it, she moves it. "If they did, Citadel consumed them long ago. Also, if they are still alive, they just aren't the same scope as Citadel. You'll see when you see Grand Citadel. Although, now that you say it, I can't help but think the Fey Court Terrorists are the Elven Spirit's way of fighting back."

"Can the spirit of the land be changed? Through the belief of its people? Or how can we even resist it? Do we have to all pack up and leave to escape its influence?"

"As it is right now? No. Its far far too big. It will never change. As for resisting, that's not too hard. Your father did, your Uncle has his moments, you and your friends have, and that Loudmouth that was here is completely free of it. Though that's less morality and hard work, and more of his own out-of-control ego." She says. "Also, the Fifth has told me that Citadel can die, if it stops getting fed, if we can survive the backlash and not give into its demands, then it'll burn itself out and die."

"Okay, now...she puts her sword in her hand. Like I did."

You try and almost pop the blade out of her hand. "Good. Good." She nods. "You know, I wasn't rescued alone...I had a sister down in that well with me. That's how I found this out, if you have a child, your clock starts counting down."
>>
>>23769775
"We went into heat at the same time. I was in love with a man, she had a lizard man she was fond of. She had a child, I didn't...oh yes, you can't breed with humans. It's lamias, nagas, lizard people only...maybe dragons, but you'd have to find one first."
>>
>>23769801
"The kid grew up, and she grew older. I stayed the same. Don't...don't ask me what happened to her. Ever." She sighs. "But, if you're dead set on being a mother at some point there are plenty of loopholes and ways around it...the kid just wont be a lamia. Also, the period of time between period of heat will get longer too, you pass at 70 your next one comes at 80, then 90, 100 and so on."
>>
>>23769831
(That's 80 years later, then 90 years later, 100 years later, etc. To be clearer)
>>
>>23769831
Do you mean adoption or magical means?
>>
>>23769880
"Do you mean adoption or magical means?"

Granny nods as you try to knock her sword out of her hand again. "Yes...getting there...there's always the unwanted ones, and if you insist on them having your blood in you, that will take a woman who loves you and a chunk of your bone marrow...which was painful as hell, but worth it."
She sighs. "Of course, they have clocks, but in ways that makes it better." She nods as you finally get the sword out of her hand. "Good."

"Oh and don't think you can charge into battle. You need to eat and not get your heart cut out just like the rest of us." She says.

You start to fight again, and you use the new moves Granny taught you. She lets you do well for a bit, then she goes at a higher speed, again, sword is at your throat.

"You're not bad Little Worm." She smiles at you. "I have a question for you now. Say it's 200 years for now, and someone asks you to describe that monk, Lea, to them...what would you say?"
>>
"One of the ghouls said that she beat the band of heroes this particular show was set up for. What happens if the Humors can't come up with a lightbringer sacrifice that Citadel will be happy with?"
>>
>>23770003
> "I have a question for you now. Say it's 200 years for now, and someone asks you to describe that monk, Lea, to them...what would you say?"

A woman of great faith who had been though terrible pain and emerged with wisdom beyond her years.
>>
>>23770003
"I would describe her as a kind, wise and honourable woman who did not allow a life of adversity to dampen her spirit."

"One of the ghouls said that she beat the band of heroes this particular show was set up for. What happens if the Humors can't come up with a lightbringer sacrifice that Citadel will be happy with?"

"I have no idea. That's why you have to be much more concerned about the Humors than Citadel right now. Remember, Citadel is a spoiled child. Eventually it'll ask you to do something it wants, you'll probably hate it, but it'll be a small thing. Say yes, and it'll be happy and move on to wail at someone else...probably the Humors. Those bastards however, watch your back." Granny says.

"Now, you haven't answered my question." She says tapping your nose. "200 years from now, Lea's long gone to the Light, how to you describe her to those who ask?"
>>
>>23770089
>>23770092

Granny smiles and nods. "Good. Well, that's all I have to say today, I'm an old woman, and we get tired. Give your friends my best." She slithers away. If there's anything else you want to say or ask her, now's the time.

To rephrase the earlier question, what are the humors going to do if they just keep failing? After all, only one of their recent failures was because of me, the other was because of a clever ghoul. Even if I do play along, they still might not be able to salvage this if recent events are any indication. What are they going to do then?

On second thought, question time might be over.

You rush over and hug her. She blinks twice and hugs you back. "Be safe, little worm. I have much more to teach you, and I want you to be here to teach mine." She plants a kiss on the top of your head, and then slithers away to her home and memories.

You realize why she's here among the lizard men, now.

You head back up and look for the others. You find them in Paladin Avery's HQ, and your temporary residence at the Now-Dead Mayor's villa.

"Hey." Tricia says. "So, we're rich, now!"

"There was a massive bounty on the Fell King, and we got the other one for Donovan as well." Mari says.

"Now all we need to do is to take out the Glass Assassins, and we can spend our days on pillow eating chocolates!" Peri grins.

"I believe that we should donate most of it to Stone Hall." Lea says.

The others all groan.

"Anyway, we got some letters." Mage says. "Guess we're popular now."

- - Lady Ssen Patrick,
Please inform us when you are within Grand Citadel. We would like to take your testimony on the actions taken by Paladin Julian Graves and Paladin Bobbi Odette. Both are under review, and we would like to have more information before passing judgement on either of them.

Also, please note that while your actions are immensely laudable, and Paladin Julian Graves has expressed his opinion of your unshakeable honor, we feel that there are some complications. Naturally, your informal familial bond with Paladin Graves is an issue, as we avoid nepotism. Also, your lack of a patron of suitable class is another conflict. We encourage your dreams, and hope that you further your good works in Citadel's name.

Grand Paladin Trevor Saul.

- - Lady Ssen Patrick,
We think we might have found a possible solution for your companions' interesting 'condition.' At your earliest convience, please come to Bronze Peak, and present this letter to the Mage/Artificers of the Staves Guild.
Arch-Mage Wendell Olson
- -

There's the staves guild seal on the bottom of the letter.
>>
>>23770702
Okay, that's not too bad.
Royal Palace next.
>>
>>23770702
Hmmm... I don't suppose we can convince Avery to vouch for us? After all, we did kind of win Stone Hall back.

Though this is probably the sort of thing he doesn't want to bother with.
>>
>>23770735
Where's Bronze Peak?
>>
>>23770735
We should give this one to Peri/Mari, they mentioned not being in quite as much of a hurry to go back to normal. How soon they want to do this is their call.
>>
>>23770702
Joy of joys, a trial. Where we most likely play as both witness and one being on trial.

>>23770735
Hmm ... where is Bronze Peak, closer to Citadel or no?
>>
>>23770735
- - Lady Ssen Patrick, Savior of Purple Sands, Champion of First Wood, Liberator of Stone Hall.

You are formally invited to a celebration of the great heroes who save our city from the barbaric horde.

His Majesty King Dorian Solomon Elegante Newgate, will be awarding medals.

Invites are enclosed, formal dress required.
- -

And the royal seal is below.
>>
>>23770769
> formal dress required

So... how is that going to work exactly?
>>
>>23770762
Bronze Peak is closer to White Tree actually. It's in the mountains, and is the big 'dwarf city' of Citadel.
>>
>>23770775
good question, we're going to have to pay to have one custom made I guess
>>
So, depending on how quickly Peri/Mari want to be back to normal, Grand Citadel or Bronze Peak will be our next stop.

Also, we could use some of our newfound wealth on scale armor as Granny suggested. And maybe a dress too.
>>
>>23770769
Well that sounds boring, but you don't say no to an invite from the King. When is it?

- - Sexy Scales, her hot friends, and the staff guy.
Greeting from Isen the Audacious! I hope you are well, Tara and I are doing fantastic, why just yesterday we...

- - Three pages of ego boosting, purple prose, later - -

And thus we found ourselves in White Tree. Overseer Trivalon gives his warmest regards, and hopes to see you soon. Met this big beautiful woman named Wendy, said to tell you that everything's good at River's Crossing.

I actually visited your hometown, and I told everyone there about your adventures!

Tara's wondering if it was okay that we kinda slept in your house, cause we didn't have any coin on us at the moment for the inn. Don't worry, I locked the door and I will pay you back for the broken bed.

Hope to see you guys at the big party, they serve the best food at Citadel parties, and I'll get to try out my new theme!

Hugs, Kisses, and so much more...

Isen The Audacious & Tara Greengrass (You like that last name? She came up with it herself.)

And the pair have signed it.

A dress that goes down to about where knees would be if we were at normal height. Then there is a train that goes to slightly beyond the end of our tail with boning and a framework to keep our tail covered. Rediculous hairdo and long gloves a must.

Tricia buries her face in her hands. "Bury him in sand and sic fire ants on him. No, cover him in centipedes! No, the BEES!"
>>
>>23770951
We should share our many finding and invitations with the party and try to decide which to do first.
>>
>>23770951
Well, we should tell Peri/Mari about Bronze Peak and Mage Guilds possible solution there. As >>23770806 depending on how fast those two want to get back to normal, Citadel or Bronze peak will be our next stop.

Are dwarfs in this sitting famous for their craft in armour and weapons? Might be good idea to buy the armor there than else where, if so. Then the dress at Citadel as I can see that place having a ton of shops/stores being the capital kingdom and such.
>>
>>23770951
Peri/Mari laugh. "Oh, by His Light, I love this guy."

Mage just shakes his head in disbelief.

Lea sighs. "At least his heart is in the right place."

Peri/Mari look at the letter from the mages. They close their eyes and you can tell that the pair are chatting to each other. Then they open their eyes.

"It isn't like the mages are gonna move," "My body isn't going anywhere either." "Also, you know...royal invite. Not something to put on the back burner." "But, you know...if you think this is priority one." "We just don't want to screw you guys over."

You get the feeling that there's more to this, and that the pair have other reasons, but they aren't wrong.

Still, the party's not for a while. You can go to Grand Citadel and deal with the whole Paladin issue and still have a week before the party. Or go to Bronze Peak and have time to get back to Grand Citadel for the occasion as well.
>>
>>23771052
We'll say Grand Citadel for now and ask Peri/ Mari when we get a chance alone. Maybe bring up the fact Mari shared( while intoxicated) that she like having a grownup beautiful body. Then make a final decision after that.
>>
>>23771052
"Let's go to Citadel first then."
>>
>>23771105
"Well, we always wanted to see Grand Citadel." You say.

Tricia smiles and claps, Lea nods, and Mage lets out a low whistle.

"I'm gonna go start packing!" Mari says, and everyone takes it as a signal to head off.

You know Paladin Avery is working, he's always working...and if you want a chance to talk to Peri/Mari. This can be a good time.
>>
>>23771134

>>
>>23771134
Talk to Peri/Mari.
>>
>>23771134
Well we should inform Avery that we're leaving I guess. And if we're donating money to the rebuilding effort then that too.
>>
Yeah, we should give at least SOME of the bounty to the rebuilding.
>>
>>23771187
Are you? The group has about 7500 gold between everyone. How much you want to give away?
>>
>>23771187
>>23771260
>>23771187
Longs it's nice to give a way money and all for a good cause. But I really like to hold off on that until we get the armour and stuff then see where the gold stock pile is.
>>
>>23771273
How much is a gold coin worth in this setting? How much would some scale mail and a posh dress cost? How much gold would build a house?
>>
10% towards rebuilding

70% towards supplies (food, armor, dresses whatever)

20% saved just in case.

so in this case. 750g? you could even round it up to 1000g if everyone else feels like pitching in an additional 50g from their savings [I'm considering Mari/Peri as one person]

I dunno, what is the approximate value of our gold? whats considered the middle line between miserly and generous?
>>
>>23771328
An average farmer, selling an average crop would pull in 100 gp. Thanks to the Citadel Blessing, he never misses a month.
>>
>>23771373
That 1200 a year is enough to pay his taxes, keep his family of (on average) six fed three meals a day, clothed, enough money to cover any upkeep or damages, plus about 15-25 gold left over for frivolities or to save.
>>
>>23771273
Lets split it and let everyone do what they want with their own shares.
>>
>>23771428
Agreed.
>>
>>23771428
Are we counting Peri and Mari as two separate shares though?
>>
>>23771413
If we upgraded all of our equipment plus kept enough for the finery the party will require and traveling expenses, what would we be left with?
>>
>>23771373
Is it actually individual gold coins? Are we carrying around a giant sack of money?

>>23771447
I would. They're separate people.
>>
>>23771448
You will be left with 2000 gold for an across the board upgrade.
>>
>>23771484
Upgrade, donate half and split the rest if the party is agreeable?
>>
>>23771428
7500g is 1500g each if we count mari/peri as a single person. 1250 with mari/peri as a whole having 2500g total on their person

if we choose to donate 1000, 6500 leaves us with 1300 each, and if mari/peri are seperate, approximately 1083g each, with mari/peri having 2166g total

just putting out numbers
>>
>>23771494
Sounds good to me.
>>
>>23771484
That includes the finery, unless you want special finery that provides combat protection and concealed weapons. That'll drop it to 1200.
>>
>>23771520
By finery I meant the fancy dress we would need for the party
>>
>>23771494
- 5500g upgrade costs
- 1000g donation

1000/5 for 200g a person, and like, 165-ishg if we choose to seperate mari/peri, with their "person" as a whole having about 330g

can we get a break down costs of the equipment upgrades? does include the dresses?
>>
>>23771536
Yeah, I know. If you want a fancy dress you'll have 2000 left, if you want a fancy dress you can fight in and have equipment, that leaves you with 1200.
>>
>>23771520
Lets go with normal finery, we have our natural armour and weapons to deal with unexpected situations.
>>
>>23771548
maybe we do, what about the rest of the party?
>>
Normal finery, some scale mail from the dwarves, donate about 1000.
>>
>>23771565
What gets added is that everyone will be wearing effective armor, Mari will have her crossbow, Peri will have a blade, Tricia will have her sickle.
>>
>>23771565
A mage, an insectwitch, a professional thief and a martial artist.

Yea, I think they'll be fine.
>>
>>23771591
Lea doesn't need weapons and Mage can't hide or bring his staff.
>>
>>23771610
Though he's kept a few things from his father and Ester. A doll fetish, a bamboo tube, and a small pouch of vials.
>>
>>23771610
> the only male of the party being almost-dead weight

poor mage.

idunno, extra finery armor doesn't seem necessary unless we fear subterfuge from less savory parties.

if we do choose to go that route though, it might be smarter to split the funds 1st and then decide what our donation would be.
>>
HAHA THIS QUEST ISN'T DEAD AT ALL! I WAS WORRIED AFTER YESTERDAY! I'm a bit busy at the present moment, BUT I WILL BE BY LATER.
>>
Okay, you'll be able to upgrade at either city as Grand Citadel has a big big market.

So, upgrade, regular finery, 1000 gold donation, and then split the rest as 200 Mage, 200 Lea, 200 Tricia, 330 Mari/Peri, 70 you?

>>23771656
Sheesh, you take a one day break...
>>
>>23771686
consensus, yes, lets just go take to Peri/Mari!
>>
>>23771686
these quests die so suddenly, I hate to see ones I like go. Maybe warn us about schedule changes so we freak out less?
>>

That sounds acceptable.
>>
>>23771712

>>
>>23771686

>>
>>23771709
Avery is rather stunned by the large donation. Or rather his eyebrows go up a little. What he does is thank you, collect the gold, write down the amount, and give you a receipt.

Peri/Mari were apparently packing up their things when you knock on the door. They smile at you when they open the door. "Hey Ssen, something up?" They ask.
>>
>>23771737
Yeah, I was wondering if the schedule changed to a less daily rotation. He's been making an INCREDIBLE amount of actual material.

But then I started worrying that maybe he got eaten by a cougar.

Actually, one last thing before I have to unplug everything and translate tech speak to the +40s, just in case this was unclear.

The guy that handed you the hint from the Fifth Humor, the medic? That was Rage. He betrayed the other Humors to save his hometown, went to the Fifth, got the intel, and passed it to you. He's also now very very dead.
>>
>>23772385
ahh that explains it a bit better, I thought it was the Fifth was the medic that directly handed us the information.
>>
>>23772385

>>
>>23772385
That's a shame.
>>
>>23772416
The Citadel probably detected him.
>>
>>23772442

>>
>>23772385
>The guy that handed you the hint from the Fifth Humor, the medic? That was Rage. He betrayed the other Humors to save his hometown, went to the Fifth, got the intel, and passed it to you.
I think Granny explicitly said that already. Pretty clear. I'm not sure why giving us that hint which contained no sensitive information after their plan already failed was a betrayal though. The other humors seemed to regret the town's loss as well.

>He's also now very very dead.
Didn't realise that. Seems like a waste. I guess they'll find a replacement Rage?
>>
>>23772385
so basically the other humors thought they could somehow salvage this situation? despite knowing the paladins wouldn't have waited for the light bringers and would have bombed the town?
ouch poor guy at least he did the "logical" thing (helping in retaking the town so it can be used again later under better controlled conditions) well at least the humors are probably going to think we won because of him, not because of our skills.
>>
How would a snake wear plate armour? Segmenting and articulating metal plates isn't an issue with a good enough craftsman. But snakes have very special belly scales and if anything covers them up it makes it hard to get around. Things like straps would drag on the ground.
>>
>>23772497
well he WAS sort of critical. Lizardman support was pivotal, I think.
>>
>>23772522
we'd have to leave it bare, or have plates that are extremely polished on the front and all sides, with a rough wedge on the back. These plates would have to be connected to our segments on a 1/1 control basis, and if not able to be strapped tightly enough to move, might need to be clamped to work.
>>
>>23772522
Doesn't that problem apply to every type of armor, not just plate?

I was assuming we only armored our weak fleshy bit, like >>23768347 and >>23768353.
>>
>>23772522
Spaced plate harness overlaid on a scale mail bodysuit perhaps?
I wonder, if this Citadel construct acts as it does it probably seeks to remove anything that might act as a replacement. Could that be why the dragons are gone/hiding as well?
>>
>>23772584
that's how we're currently rolling.

We also got shot in the scaled part by paralytic arrows.

I say we throw some barding over the top and call it good.
>>

>>
>>23772834

>>
>>23772522

Maybe we could go see if we can learn some protective magic to protect the scaly bits, or otherwise get some item that does the same thing? There's got to be some sort of enchantment that could make a magic shield appear over stuff. Either that or find out if there's some way to naturally toughen Ssen's scaly bits without becoming monstrous.

Adding to that, we really ought to figure out how to weaponize our venom, its really not hard to extract if the snake is willing, a casing an a jar is all that is really needed. Emergency holdout blades coated with the stuff. A bit underhanded, but would be good for emergencies.
>>
>>23773402
The only downside is that then we'd need to worry about people stealing our holdout weapons or vials of the stuff and using it on our friends.
>>
>>23773402
if we're figuring out ways to weaponize our venom, we should take it by an alchemist or wizard. I am entirely certain they could do sssstuff to it.
>>
>>23773470
I'm worried about vials we give to our friends used to betray us. Since people obviously act against their own will in a lightbringer story, and those ALWAYS include betrayal, which means one of our friends might get forced to betray us if we get nominated lightbringer.

once we sort out the paladins, visit the ball, and split meri/peri, THEN we can go search for dragons.

No, I don't have a map drawn, just a general idea. River's Crossing is at a river fork. White Tree is along said river. RC is half the size of WT, Purple Sands is 2x the size of WT and on the edge of a desert, First Wood is on a lake across from a mountain by a big ass wood same size as PS, Stone Hall is on the coast and is 3X the size of WT, Bronze Peak is inside a mountain, Grand Citadel is on the opposite coast and is GIGANTIC (It's the size of 2 Tokyos, it eats up mountains and spills into the sea.) All of it is connected by the King's Road. Jubillee is half the size of RC and is in the middle of nowhere. Across the sea from GC is the Phoenix Kingdom.

Other than that, the place is yours to make.

>>23774969
Yes Citadel has potatoes, there's fields upon fields dedicated to feeding the monster city. Oceans of cattle, countless quarries, and lumber from the great forest is felled daily.

Of course, thanks the Citadel's 'blessing' the fields never go fallow, the cattle don't ruin the ecosystem, and there's always enough stone and wood...and people don't notice.

"I can tell you are both holding something back." You say. "Its Ok if you dont want to tell me everything, but I am here for you if or when you do, and will help in any way I can."

Peri/Mari fidget a bit, and then motion for you to come inside.

"We think..." "We think it might be better if, we...you know..." "Didn't split up." They say, sitting on their bed. "We both remember what it was like to be alone in your head. It'd be hard to go back to that."

"Anyway, with us together, it's easier for us to be a good person. We weren't exactly the paragons of morality before."

"You know why with me." Peri says.

"I was a spoiled, pudgy, prodigy, who had a lot of money." Mari sighs. "I wasn't a good person either. I made a lot of other kids' life very unpleasant."

"When we're together though..." Peri shrugs. "We can watch each other, keep each other behaving, and stay worthy of being with you and the others."

"I don't know if it's going to be like that if we split up." Mari said. "Also, you wont want to tote around a fat 13-year old. I probably wont be able to shoot, either."

"It's not selfish, right?" Peri asks. "I mean, it's just us, and its our call."

"Also, there's no one waiting for me, Granny killed mom and dad, so...who cares if my lousy old body lies frozen in a Conclave?"

The two don't hate the idea. They nod.

"Plus, we could do the tourist thing." Mari says. "See the gem caves, look at the artificer workshops, and see if we can find a dragon!"

You load up the wagon, and Lea hitches the Nightmare up to it.

"We should come up with a name for this guy." Tricia says.

"Yeah, cause you're really great at that." Mage says.

"You're just picky!" Tricia snaps back.

It's a week's worth of travel from Stone Hall to Gand Citadel, most of it through fields of cows, or wheat, or corn, or potatoes. Mile after mile. Thankfully the Nightmare is fast. Also, for some reason, very few people both the group of people with a flaming horse, a snake woman, a mage, a girl wrapped in bandages, a girl in black with knives and crossbows, and a girl who's often surrounded by bees.

Lea sings a few songs. Peri has a deck of cards. You rest at Traveller's Taverns when you come up on them, and the miles go on by.

Of course, there are a few times that you have to camp out under the stars.

It could work like a trebuchet, one end of the sling is tied on, the other is looped. You swing and the loop slips off the hook at the right moment releasing the rock in the sling. It would be almost impossible to aim in retrospect. But with the entire tail behind it you could impart a crazy amount of force into a thrown rock.

"Good morning!" A cheerful voice says.

You look down the blade at the person holding it. It's an elf, and he's dressed in Fey Court armor.

"So, this is the Paladin Serpent."

"You know," You hear Tricia groan. "I don't even know why we bother sleeping at all."

You can see that the others are all being held at sword or arrow point by separatists.

"Now, I'm sure you've realized that I could have killed you in your sleep, or at least tried too." He says. "However, I'm not suicidal." He looks over his shoulder. "How's it coming?"

"Slowly," You hear the Nightmare scream. "I don't know how Donovan got this thing to obey him!"

"We just want the horse, and then we'll take off." The elf pointing a blade at you says.

"We can take them!" The one over Lea says.

"Yeah, no...no we can't." The leader says. "Ease up, or they're going to kill us."

Guy's terrified of us...

Could this perhaps be an opportunity to gain some insight into what the Seperatists' main goal? We know about all of the talk about traditional elven values and such, but there can be a large difference between what the rank-and-file want as opposed to their leaders.
>>
>>23777559
"We certainly *can* blame you for trying, but we're remarkably lenient with people who try to make amends."

"Why did you even try to do this, if you expected it to go so badly for you?"

"Well the plan was to take the horse while you were sleeping, this was my plan b." The elf says. "The horse is a symbol to the Fey Court. It's the rage of the natural world against the Citadel...or something, look Queen Mab said she pay me a ton of money for it. That's the part I found important."

"You're surprisingly sensible for a group of bandits." You say with a smirk.

"S'how I stay alive, and part of that is NOT picking fights with people who can fight ARMIES of Ghouls!"

"All it takes is one lucky shot or swipe." The guy still pointing his crossbow at Lea says.

You nod. "Go right ahead."

He walks over to the young elf and calmly puts a hand on his shoulder. He waves off the others, who pull back. "If you shoot that bolt, you're going to die."

"I've dedicated my life to the cause, to stopping the tyranny of Citadel." He says. "Now we have the ones who took down one of our greatest leader at our mercy, and you want to just walk away?"

"Yes. Honestly Ryan, where did you get this guy?"

"He's my cousin's kid." Another Fey Court bandit says.

"Of course he is...look, kid, we aren't the front line people. You wanna go on a suicide run against the Newgates? Great! I'll strap the blast stones to you myself."

"But...but..."

The man gently pushes the crossbow away. "We tried, we lost. We walk away, we can try again...nothing personal..." He says looking at you. "Just, you know, a 1000 gold is a 1000 gold."

There's a pause. The leader groans. "Ryan, get him out of her before I kill him."

The elf leads the kid away, despite his protests of rightgeousness and Elf Law and so on. The leader goes to pick up his sword and he sheaths it.

You all get back into the wagon and finish your trip to Grand Citadel without further incident.

At the end of your trek come up over a small hill, and everyone gasps as they look out at the Greatest City of Seven Ages. You cannot see where it ends, it spreads out so far along the coast. Actually, you don't even see a 'coast' the city pours out into the ocean, with buildings on stilts, or built upon ships, or built upon other buildings that sank. Grand Citadel, the only city mighty enough to force the ocean to capitulate.

The streets go everywhere in a massive, chaotic web. Canals merge into roads, and you see roads on top of roads in areas where the city is actually tiered like a layer cake.

You can see the marketplace from here, the colorful tents and streamers. It has to be bigger than River's Crossing on its own.

The rooftops glitter like gold in the early morning sun, and there are flag and banners everywhere, making the sky a sea of color. You can taste the amazing smells of bread, spices, honey, and a thousand other savories in the air.

The grand palace reaches as high as a mountain, mostly because, at one point, it was a mountain, now Grand Citadel surrounds it, and artisans simply chiseled away anything that they didn't want. The Grand Cathedral looks like it's made out of glass the way it shimmers and sparkles, casting His Light over all of the City.

There are spires with golden spheres atop them. There are building with inlays of silver, gold, and gems that dazzle and marvel. There is the sound of a thousand thousand musicians playing and all of them blend together in perfect harmony.

This is the city of Heaven.

Welcome to Grand Citadel.

You stable the Nightmare and start to make your way through the city. People give you a few glances here and there, but most of them pay you no mind. You see a Naga on a leash pass by you as you get near the market. They must think you're one of those. You get a look at the Naga's eyes as you pass her. The only thing you see is this glazed look, and a content dopey smile on her face. Plus, she's got the same kind of surgical scars that Tara had. This isn't a person, not anymore...and her owner really isn't much different. She's had her face altered, and that same smile as her pet. She's simply happy and that's enough for her.

The city seems to get more and more beautiful as you head into it. Tiling covered tunnels and roads. Archways covered with lapis lazuli, and gold paint or inlays everywhere.

Every corner there seems to be a street musician, or a fakir, or a dancer. They're all magnificent and coins pour out of their offering bowls.

All but one. "Ladies and Gentlemen, step right up, step right up, and behold the next wonder of the Seventh Age!" You hear. There's a small stage set up and a man in a red jacket is trying to get people's attention, and failing.

"You there!" He points at you. "Yes, the beautiful...holy..." He's notice what you are. "Uhh, okay, come right up! Let me show you a wonder that rivals even yourself!" He grins.

"Or staves, and they certainly aren't part of the conclave." Mari says. "I think we just met the ENITRE guild of inventors."
>>
>>23779234
"Oy, stop throwing things. Don't waste that there food! You know how many people live here?"

>>23779219
>>23779208
Oh come on, he might be legit. If there is a legitimate alternative to one of the demands of the citadel than it's preferred ones, it may very well try to boo them down. Though if he's a quack, I owe you a coke.
>>
>>23779261
"We should check it out later, I am kind of curious about what he was talking about"
>>
A thought occurs, on the one hand he could be crackpot who's just causing trouble with crappy inventions.

On the other hand, he could be unpopular because Citadel doesn't like him trying to change the way of life with new ideas.

Maybe we ought to at least see what he's doing later when we have time.

None of this is stuff I'm suggesting saying outloud, before you go and have Ssen say any of this, EchoGarrote.
>>
>>23779273
>Oh come on, he might be legit. If there is a legitimate alternative to one of the demands of the citadel than it's preferred ones, it may very well try to boo them down.

Granny suggested not letting any of our companions know Citadel was intelligent, or it might kill them, so keep that stuff to ourselves.
>>
>>23779306
yes. and investigating an inventor wouldn't be letting them know the city is intelligent. It would just show our interest in alternative water, food, and etcetera supplies. Which we are interested in.
>>
>>23779297
I agree, he was the ONLY one who did not have a crowd as far as we know, I would bet its the citadel's influence that is causing that and the food being thrown at him.
>>
>>23779288
"We should check it out later, I am kind of curious about what he was talking about" You say looking at his card. You have a strange thought that this could also be his only calling card.

The Cathedral isn't made of glass, it's just covered in it, with huge stain glass windows. They show many different things, the cities of Citadel, Citadel itself, depictions of the Lightbringers striking down the Shapers of Darkness, and the biggest one is at the top, a huge circular window of the Nine Pointed Star against a blue field. It's the most beautiful place you've ever seen.

A Lightkeeper Priest walks up to you as you all enter. "I'm sorry, but we ask that pets be kept outside." She says quietly.
>>
>>23779364
Tell mage to wait outside. The look on her face should be priceless.
>>
>>23779364
"We'll remember that if and when we ever get pets."
>>
>>23779364
Don't worry, we'll keep the nightmare outside.

Big smile
>>
>>23779364
"I am no pet Lightkeeper, have you not heard of the Dawnchasers?"
>>
>>23778354
I am no pet. I have come to see the statue of my father, Paladin Patrick
>>
General suggestion for if it comes up later when we get a chance to meet with the Paladins: I don't think we should try to find a patron right now, assuming we even can at the moment. As much as it might help us to become a Paladin as quickly as possible, it'd be much more satisfying 'to be able to walk the streets of Grand Citadel for only half a day, and return with enough people to fill the chapel hall with those who cry for your ordainment.'. Even better if half of them are lamias and other overlooked peoples. (Heck, we could pull that off *right now* in Stone Hall.)
>>
>>23779403
>>23779407
These two: "Don't worry, we keep the Nightmare stabled in the city, and we don't keep any other pets."

If he gets annoyed with you, pull out the holy symbol and make it clear you're there to pay your respects.
>>
>>23779401
Funny, but not worth making a joke at Mage's expense at a time like this. He faces the same kind of prejudice that you do.
>>
>>23779364
"You're right."
pick her up, place her outside.
>>
>>23779403
"We'll remember that if and when we ever get pets. We do have a Nightmare, but we keep it stabled."

The woman's eyes go wide and she takes a step back. "Oh my, you can talk! Wait..." She looks at you all. "Oh my goodness, are you...are you the Dawnchasers?"
>>
>>23779460
"Yes we are, I am Ssen, along with Tricia, Mage, Peri and Mari, and finally Lea.
>>
>>23779407
This.
>>
>>23779460
"Maybe~

"Yes, yes we are."

Introductions and such.

"I'm here actually to see my fathers statue, Paladin <insert name here> "

I've forgotten the name ...
>>
>>23779460
We are. I am Ssen Patrick. I have come to see my father's legacy.
>>
>>23779460
As much as I'd like to remark on how it took us being the Dawnchasers to not get looked down on as pets, after seeing the pet Lamia and its pet human earlier, it's pretty clear that the description isn't inaccurate in some cases.

So: "Yes. We're here to pay our respects, and I had hoped to visit the statue of my father."
>>
>>23779514
Along with introductions. I think it'll be amusing when you introduce both Peri and Mari and point t the same person (especially if she changes appearance to each in turn).
>>
>>23779460
Yes, and could I persuade you to show us to my father's statue? I would very much like to see him again.
>>
>>23779514
"Yes. We're here to pay our respects, and I had hoped to visit the statue of my father."

"Your...father?" The Lightkeeper looks at you, obviously confused.

"Lord Paladin Liam Patrick." You say.

"Oh...alright. Yes," She clears her throat. "What part of the Occuli was he from? That's the colored stone in the center of the Medallion that he wore." She says, slowly and carefully, as if you were a stupid child.
>>
>>23779566
Point at our medallion.
>>
>>23779566
"It is clear, on a black background. I have it here."
point to it, or pull it out and wear it
>>
>>23779566
"Caligo Clarus, as are we. You know, the ones with the white stones." (In exactly the same tone she used.)
>>
>>23779566
Make a face of frustration and anger while showing the medal.
>>
>>23779605
And definitely pull out the medallion, per
>>23779591
>>
>>23779591
"It is clear, on a black background. I have it here." You hold up the Medallion...it's both yours and Father's now, in your mind.

"Oh...I never heard of...one moment." She goes away for a moment.

Mage lets out a low whistle. "This place is pretty. Lightkeepers are thick as bricks, but the place is pretty."

"I miss Father Uriah." Tricia says. "He said he's never been here, you think he would like it Snake?"
>>
>>23779566
Show her father's medalion. "Blue, I believe. And don't worry: I can likely keep up with you just fine." Tap our forehead with an index finger at the last comment.
>>
>>23779647
"Snake, is it? I would imagine he would be as overwhelmed as the rest of us. Perhaps moreso!"
>>
>>23779647
I don't know. Maybe. Though he never seem type to like such things.
>>
>>23779647
He never really was for the bright and flashy. The effort put into making it might take him aback though.
>>
>>23779680
"I don't know. Maybe. Though he never seem type to like such things." You say.

"Yeah, you know I haven't seen a single clock in this whole place." She shrugs. "I mean even our town had a clock tower."

The Lightkeeper has returned. "Yes, umm due to there being no new members of the Calico Claras, we had to move their statues to make room for the other more prominent orders. Although, I was told that we keep them in the top cloister. If you don't mind the dust, I can take you there."
>>
EchoGarrote, remind me, what was the Calico Claras all about as an order?
>>
>>23779753
"Please."

Let's find that statue.
>>
>>23779753
"Please do." Make smalltalk with our fellows about getting sponsored for paladinhood.
>>
>>23779753
Make a gesture." Lead the way."
>>
>>23779780
Well, first they're the Caligo Clarus, not 'Calico Claras' the Lightkeeper didn't get the name right. Second, you aren't sure. There's no real information that's survived the ages, as far as you know, Father was the very last one. Granny was evasive as well. All you know for certain, is the oath.

"For In The Darkness Is Where His Light Is Needed Most, Thus There In The Darkness I Must Stay."
>>
>>23779792
"Please." You say.
The hike up the many many many flights of stairs is a long one, and they aren't all in one staircase. You have to walk through the rows of pews, and then through the galleries, the Green Occuli who watch over Citadel's fields, the Blue Occuli who guard Citadel's royalty, the Amber Occuli who build Citadel's great wonders, the Red Occuli who fight Citadel's battles for His Light and Protectors of the Faith, the sky-blue Occuli who watch the waters, the purple Occuli who watch the watchers and police the Paladins.

Finally she comes to a trapdoor in the ceiling, she pulls it open and a ladder, along with a lot of dust, comes down. 'Top Cloister' apparently means 'storage attic.'
>>
>>23779844
"Seems oddly appropriate to place their statues in the darkness, after all. Let's head to where his Light is needed most, then, shall we?"
>>
>>23779919
"Uhh...I don't know how you're going to..." The Lightkeeper looks at the ladder and then looks at you.

Tricia sighs. "Okay, I'll get her arms, the rest of you with her tail. Hang on, Snake."

"Oh good, I'll just..."

"Just go." Peri says. "We'll be fine."

"Oh, good, thank you." The Lightkeeper scurries away.
>>
>>23779951
Ladders... my one weakness.
>>
>>23779951
Not to turn down the help of your friends, but with your gripping strength, you should have no trouble slithering up a ladder. Just grip across both sides, and loosen your grip on alternating sides, until you get your upper body onto the floor above.
>>
>>23779951
If we can get a coil up there, we should be able to pull ourselves up the rest of the way. I would say our arms up there, but I'm not sure if we can pullup a whole lamia.
>>
>>23779951
Let us ask the librarian about our father's order and our daddy later. They should be less obtuse.
>>
>>23779951
I CAN GET MYSELF UP IM NOT A CRIPPLE

I just gotta pull myself up with my arms, and wrap myself around the ladder like a tree.

...would someone mind holding the ladder!
>>
>>23779969
So we are Space Marines?
>>
>>23779973
(Just make sure you don't grip tight enough to damage the ladder.)
>>
>>23779951
we can climb a tree with no branches, a ladder is no challenge for a snake
>>
>>23779951
"You know if there was pole here or something I could have toldly got myself up ... "
>>
I guess we forgot to visit Mage's sister did we?

Wonder when will we run into the next generation of ghoulz?
>>
>>23779985
No, space marines cannot into stairs, most ladders are made from plasteel.

>>23779978
Good call.

"I'm FINE guys, put me down!" You snap. The others put you down.

Grumbling, and very slowly, you pull yourself up the ladder. After a few rungs up, you're able to snap your tail up above you and hoist yourself the rest of the way up.

"You want us to come up, or do you want some time alone?" Tricia asks.
>>
>>23780031
"Give me a few minutes alone with him."
>>
>>23780031
Invite them up, we want all of them to see our father too.
>>
Related to this situation, a question that hasn't come up in the past: Ssen has a neutral "standing" pose with a certain fraction of her body on the ground, but in the equivalent of "on tiptoes to reach a high shelf" mode, how much body does Ssen actually need to keep on the ground to have enough muscle power to hold the rest upright?
>>
>>23780046
This, invite them up in a few minutes, get some alone time first.
>>
>>23780047
I support this. Then after they leave, we will have a moment with him.

Introduce our friends to him.
>>
>>23780031
Let them come up. "Hey dad. Meet all my friends."
>>
>>23780031
Just a few minutes. I'd hate to cheat you a chance to meet my father. Smile saddly at this though
>>
>>23780050
I think we said she needs at least 1/4 of her on the ground and she's 12 feet long.
>>
>>23780047
This; we don't need to be alone to pay our respects, and especially we don't need to be away from our friends to do so.
>>
>>23780069
Awesome. And, can Ssen coil and jump in the air, like doing a tail snap against the ground?
>>
>>23780069
I thought we where 14 ft?

and we can rise to 2/3rds length, no more, so 8ft max if we are 12 ft.
>>
>>23780094
Just dug back into the archives:
> (You have no molars, two prominent fangs, and the rest are canines and incisors. You can survive off of vegetables, but you wouldn't be healthy from it. You're eight feet from head to tail tip, and you normally lay about 5' 10'' high, but you can go as tall as 7' You have yellow, snake slit, eyes, and your tongue is forked. I'm going by the OP pic as your human parts go.)
>>
>>23780066
"Well, first you should all meet him." You say.

The others all climb up. You all push through the boxes and trunks that clutter the room, and then you find them. This room is the room that giant window of the Nine Pointed Star looks out from. There's 13 statues here. All of them are pretty old. The oldest ones are worn away to just being vague humanoid shapes. A few still have recognizable features, a design on their armor, the patterns in their sword. Their faces are worn away, though. There's nothing left but the memory that once they existed, and that's it.

Save Father's.

He's standing tall, his face stern and focused, one hand on the carved version of the sword at your side. He's looking out through the window, out across all of Grand Citadel.

He looks slightly sad.
>>
>>23780181
Our length was changed a few posts after that.
>>
>>23780181
Yeah we decided that didn't make sense cause I pulled that out of my ass. Keep reading down.
>>
>>23780094
actually looking back, we should probably be 18ft+ minimum or so to pull off some of the moves we have been doing, especially the tail attacks

at 12 feet we would have to flatten ourselves on the ground to tail whip stuff.

>>23780181
check later in the thread, its changed, no snake can rise more then 2/3rd of its length, it would be 12 ft absolute minimum, and thats just to stay in one place while that height, not move around.
>>
>>23780213
So Light in the Darkness has always been a rare breed, one man in a century kind of deal.
>>
>>23780213
Try not to get emotional.

With little success
>>
>>23780213
"Hello Father, I have some friends I would like you to meet."
and introduce our companions

then >>23780275
>>
>>23780213
I never realized the order was so few. We'll have to change that
>>
>>23780237
>>23780257
You're entirely right; I started through the archives and searched for "feet", and stopped when I found the first measurement (after checking that it wasn't when Ssen was younger than now).

Regarding the larger length we'd need to be now: how about Ssen *was* around 13 feet, and after working with Granny and learning to actually move and bend like a Lamia, she stopped doing the Lamia equivalent of slouching, and now she has about 15 feet with proper posture?
>>
>>23780320
15, specifically, because that's enough to have an average-human-height upper body of 5-6 feet, have 1/3 on the ground at around 5 feet, and lift 4-5 feet of tail off the ground to use a tail at around hand or shoulder height.
>>
>>23780320
17 would be closer to the length required to smack stuff that is outside of melee range, but yea that could be an explanation.

remember 5 feet is 'wasted' on the human portion, and staying at a human eye height, plus at least 2 or 3 where her body first contacts the ground, then the rest of the tail.

or we where talking about tail length the entire time, not including anything that is upright.
>>
>>23780290
Seconding.
>>
>>23780275
You sniff. It's hard to not think of Father's last words. He called you a dragon. You think he's proud of how you've been able to soar...

By His Light, that's so corny.

"Hello Father, I have some friends I would like you to meet." You say.

The others look at him. Someone puts a hand on your shoulder, and squeezes. Then lets go.

"Hey." Mage says. "Look." He points between two old featureless statues. There's a stone stand, with a book under glass. It has the Caligo Clarus version of the Medallion on the cover.

"That's the Occuli record." Lea says. She carefully lifts off the glass and opens it. "They put down their names and..." She pauses as she looks at the book. "Here he is...Liam Patrick, Member of the Caligo Clarus, he who has dedicated himself to the understanding of his teachings, and to guide us...to guide us in their changes, for change is inevitable, but frightening and terrible...so there must always be the Guiding Light." Lea says. "Tricia, your father's name was Alexander, yes?"

"Yeah."

"He's in here too. He listed all those who he travelled with...it's a long list. Half a page of names." She says.

She flips to the next page. It's blank. She looks at you. "Do you want to sign it now, or wait until the ceremony?"
>>
>>23780467
>Wait.
>>
>>23780467
"Wait."
>>
>>23780467
"Wait."
Can't sign it if you're not actually in the order, that's just not proper.
>>
>>23780467
>Philosophy of Change
Oh shit the Light was always about changing with the times while Citadel was about stability and stagnancy.

Dad must have fought the Citadel. Why else would he adopt a lamia daughter?
>>
>>23780467
Wait

>Inventor gets heckled in the street.
>records of a Paladin Order dedicated to positive change gets left in some dusty room and forgotten.
Citadel really is stagnant.
>>
>>23780467
>and to guide us...to guide us in their changes, for change is inevitable, but frightening and terrible...so there must always be the Guiding Light

Hmmm, I wonder if he knew about the true nature of the Citadel and how it feels about change?
>>
>>23780529
I am doubly sure we should go see that inventor.
>>
>>23780542
But may be only us. We don't want our friends to get on Citadel's bad side.
>>
>>23780574
we'll split up for private time, perhaps after seeing whatever attractions the others want to see to be fair.
>>
>>23780529
Can we... take the inventors away from Citadel? Go to a place where its power is limited? Amongst the lizard folks or the elf rebels once we allied with them?
>>
>>23780594
I like it.
>>
>>23780521
It says "those he travelled with", not necessarily just Paladins. But nonetheless, no sense inviting trouble, and in any case we'll want to add all our friends at the same time, which we shouldn't do until we can truly call ourselves the new Caligo Clarus.
>>
>>23780574
>See an inventor boil some water but nobody cares
>It must be a conspiracy by a giant living city that eats heroes!
Nah, most likely they won't really care either. They are mostly human.
>>
>>23780613
We need to know who daddy was with. Perhaps allies exist in this world.
>>
>>23780627
this is a fair, while insulting, point. How common is this type of technology? Is he using plain boiling, or distilling? Is germ theory a thing? Is this the loie pasteur of this setting?
>>
>>23780627
Boil water.

Do you know what boiling water generates?
Steam.
Steam engine.
Industrial Revolution.
Emancipation Proclamation.
Worker's welfare movement.
>>
>>23780645
With industrial revolution:

Mass production of medicine/potions
Mass production of goods
Tools to make large scale farms that are effective at food production
>>
>>23780634
We should definitely read it. Does Julian appear in there, or is this just a list of fellow Caligo Clarions? How about any of the other names of people we've met?
>>
>>23780672
>He listed all those who he travelled with
>>
>>23780645
>Do you know what boiling water generates?
Yes. They don't. Random people in a fantasy world are not going to foresee the industrial revolution from looking at a kettle. Mari's the only one who might know anything about technology at all.
>>
>>23780672
Let us pay respect to the other Caligo members too. Any monsters amongst their parties?

Any long lived species?

I bet Granny is in there somewhere!
>>
>>23780685
Sorry, yes, you are right. I went overboard with that. However, I just want to point out boiling water is a big deal from an out of character perspective.
>>
>>23780467
"I'll wait." You say as you close the book and put it back.

"No quills up here anyway." Mari says.

"We'll let you have a moment alone with him." Tricia says. The others turn to leave.

"Damnit Mage, why'd you close the hatch?" Peri mutters as she starts to struggle with it.

"I didn't!"

"You were the last one up!"

"Must have been on a spring or something then." Mage said.

"Whatever...okay got it." Peri opens the latch. "Now help me with the lad-"

"Shhh!" Lea says.

"-ifficulties the other Occuli will face if that lizard is allowed to enter the Order?" You recognize that voice. Paladin Bobbi Odette. "We finally were able to straighten them out with the elves and dwarves in their proper places. Now this!"

(More coming)
>>
>>23780695
"Julian's accreditation can be put into question." A voice says. "He is her 'uncle' after all."

"Not if the short-leg puts in a good word for her too. He's nothing but good things to say about her and her efforts to fix Stone Hall...monster bought him off, but what can you expect from a Dwarf."

"She does plan on joining the Claigo Clarus, the Clear Occuli. No one's even heard of them these days. All we need is to send her off to the boonies, or the Phoenix Empire, and we'll never hear from her again."

There's a pause. "You don't understand, do you Overseer? And here I thought you were supposed to be smart. There is NOTHING more dangerous than ONE example."

"I'm sorry?"

Odette sighs the sigh of a person who's dealing with an idiot. "Would you say that the statement 'All elves are savages, or terrorists, living in the mud and will never go to His Light,' is true?"

"No."

"Why not? I can name twenty well know Elf terrorists, and the Fey Court rejects his light for their Old Laws."

"Well, yes...but there are plenty of good ones."

"Name one."

"Paladin Shara...oh." He says.

"Yes, oh." Odette says. "Once you get that one air-tight example into the system, you can never get it out, and what people know to be an undeniable FACT...becomes weak...because anyone in any argument can just say 'But Look at Paladin Patrick and his slimy daughter! Then others will stand up, trying to emulate her, and before you know it...Grand Citadel is crawling with monsters...I cannot let that happen. He has spoken to me, shown me that Grand Citadel is in Danger. That I can save Grand Citadel...I just have to stop her."

"She doesn't have a patron."

"Mmh...I'm not so sure about that."

"What?"

"Never mind, the walls have ears." She motions. "Come, I need to see about something in your records."
>>
>>23780718
Overseer?

Uhmmm... I wonder if we should get to know the purple paladins sometimes...
>>
>>23780718
Wow, so she's not just for the status quo, she's actively a massive bigot even against those widely considered "people". OK, we officially have an enemy in this "Paladin".
>>
>>23780718
Bitches gonna bitch.
>>
>>23780718
Suddenly on-topic question: are there any magical means of guaranteeing truth, so that we could quote this conversation verbatim and have it treated as more than just hearsay (and from what'll be seen as a biased source)? In order of preference: truth detection, truth serum/spell, telepathy?
>>
>>23780718
we should not attemptto get patronage right now or rule that method out entirely, finish the ball and quietly work out of sight for a while till the heat passes.

I think Granny even told us we should lie low, else the Citadel entity would start to take notice
>>
>>23780751
Purple? The paladin military police?
>>
>>23780803
I agree. We will wait for her to go, then after that...

Be careful of what she can do to us during uncle's trial, though.
>>
>>23780761
Yep, we are going to need to find dirt on her. Playing politics is gonna suck, but if she wants to mud wrestle...uh....sorry, lost my train of thought.
>>
>>23780805
I doubt whatever Odette has planned is very paladin-like, It would be good to know a decent one like the dwarf from the siege that we could trust to pull her short if she oversteps.
>>
>>23780718
Peri has you wait for a full thirty minutes before opening the hatch and letting you all down. Mage keeps insisting that he didn't pull the damn thing up, and demonstrates that the ladder is on a spring...though you notice that it make a decent amount of noise when the ladder slides itself back up.

"How in His Light did she get to be a Paladin?" Tricia asks.

Lea sighs. "I suppose with enough money, power, or influence, a patron, a paladin, and a deed aren't too hard to create." She shakes her head. "The Teachings talking about people like her. The Light encompasses all in deeds, worth, and values, but Darkness can make one who holds the Light become proud. They forget that it's not important that the Light be spread, but they dwell on the idea that it must be THEY who spread the Light..and thus the world becomes Darker. I pray for that woman."
>>
>>23780819
That's not even slightly appealing.

Does raise an interesting idea, though: do Paladins have any kind of ritual challenge, along the lines of "the Light would not let a Paladin fail such a challenge unless they had truly done wrong"? Seems like the kind of thing they might do.
>>
>>23780858
So the Light has helped us again.
>>
>>23780858
Probably had ought to brainstorm ideas for dealing with bitchyface.
>>
>>23780858
"I pray she doesn't cause too much trouble."
>>
>>23780858
"My thoughts where somewhat similar, but far less kindly worded"

"Thank the Light that hatch closed and we where able to overhear though, now we know exactly what kind of 'paladin' she is, and whoever sponsors us is not safe."
>>

"So," Tricia looks around. "Damnit...no clocks. The ball's tomorrow, we still have to go to the market."

"We still need to give our report to the Solar." Mari says. "Though, I understand why you might not want to go there."

Peri sighs. "Shame this beautiful city had to be spoiled by her..."
>>
Did we ever read the full text of the letter of apology she provided for trying to kill us?
>>
>>23780925
"Indeed"

"To the market first, then the Solar."
>>
>>23780925
I guess we should deliver the report while we're here.
>>
>>23780925

"I wonder if we can make it quick with Solar, the less noise we make the better overall I'm thinking."
>>
>>23780928

It mentioned that she was attempting to kill some Ghoul archers on the top of the wall and didn't see the group before she fired.
>>
>>23780974
Which is bullshit and we all know it.
>>
>>23780986
But it will be hard to prove. She got her ground covered. Let us wait for another clue in the future to trip her.
>>
>>23780974
Do ghoulz even have archers?
>>
>>23780925
Shopping for a bit of time to decompress, then report to the Solar.
>>
>>23780973
I support this.
>>
>>23780999
Yes. We've fought several.
>>
>>23780974
Right, but I meant the exact text. Could be important, and potentially useful.
>>
>>23780973
"I wonder if we can make it quick with Solar, the less noise we make the better overall I'm thinking." You say.

The others nod. The Solar is closer to the Cathedral than the Market anyway.

Once more, you're dazzled by the beauty of the city of Grand Citadel. The people look pretty as well, there's no missing teeth, no skin legions, the old men aren't even balding that much. You notice that Tricia looks a little self conscious and ashamed, she looks downright homely compared to the women of Grand Citadel. Lea, of course looks unbothered, but you notice that her bandages are double wrapped and she doesn't like to make eye contact with people.

The Solar is a solid looking building, silver and grey. Shining with the light of the day. Inside there is even more silver and grey. There's less Paladins in armor than you thought would be here, as you are led around after you announce yourself. A lot of Purple Stones, though, they seem to be dedicated to pushing around scrolls and writing things down.

You are led to a small dark room. There's a chair under a spotlight, you can see a table in the dim gloom, with three people sitting behind it.

"Please approach the spotlight and sit in the...oh...right...umm, please approach the spotlight." One of the men at the table says.
>>
>>23781011
Right. My bad.
>>
>>23781012
She's not stupid. It's a generic apology that says the same things she told the purple stones. 'Archers, didn't see you, bad call, my bad, put it on my record, sorry.' She knows how to avoid hanging herself.
>>
>>23781118
Who are the three people?

Any way we can casually make use of the chair without looking silly? If not, then stand behind it and put your hands on the back, respectfully.
>>
>>23781118
Heh, we should troll by coiling ourselves into the chair.
>>
>>23781118
So it is true that Citadel cares only for the city and benefits only the city, and not anyone else in the empire.

So this is the lamia world's variant of the parasite city leaching off the countryside.
>>
>>23781149
They're all purple stones, you've never met them before. Most purple stones stay in GC and just process after-action reports.
>>
>>23781139
No left handed complements? No mean spirited jokes? Nothing at all even suggesting ill will?
>>

Nope!

>>23781153
Don't want to break their chair. How heavy are we, anyway?
>>
>>23781153
You've had enough experience with chairs, so you artfully coil yourself around the chair so you're sitting in it quite neatly.

There's a little coughing and quiet chuckles from the trio.

"Your name is Ssen Patrick. You were raised in the village of River's Crossing. Your adoptive father was Lord Paladin Liam Patrick of the Clear Occuli, also know as the Caligo Clarus, who had retired. Now deceased and buried at River's Crossing.

They take your silence with a smirk and a nod. Apparently they like to rattle people with the 'That was not a question.' routine. Nervous people talk more.

"During this time, you were in council with Paladin Graves on and off. After first attempts proved unsuccessful, the plan to enter the sewage system and contact the monster race known as the lizard people was made. In exchange they would be given ability to be on the surface in Stone Hall, and granted rights as citizens.

Who came up with the plan to contact the lizard people?"
>>
I definitely don't like how they listed us as being "involved" with the attack on Purple Sands.
I feel like this won't end well.

"Paladin Graves."

There's a whispered conversation.

"Ah, I see." You can see the man discarding multiple papers. "That is all our questions. Thank you for your cooperation Lady Patrick, you are dismissed."

"Hey," Tricia says. "They ask you any weird questions?"

"I didn't notice any missing question." Tricia said.

"We should compare what they asked each of us tonight." You say.

"Can we do that?" Mari asks as you head out of the Solar. "Also, how could you Peri? Leaving me to answer all the questions!"

"I don't do good at interrogations."

"Anywhere else, or are we finding a Traveller's to spend the night in?" Lea asks. "Though, they say that Grand Citadel's Market only gets more beautiful at night."

>>

I support this.
>>
>>23781866
"We should at least get the rooms booked, then to the market, we still need to buy our formal wear for tomorrow, and i kind of have the feeling mine will need to be tailored or custom made."

The sun is setting, and the market seems to be getting even more lively, fire dancers and eaters, street performers, open theater, and a singing Naga. There's red lantern houses with women and men of all types and species. They're all smiling and waving, after all this is Grand Citadel, even the whorehouses are places that are pleasant, and all of them are good looking and kind.

Prices are fair, but you can hear dickering and bargaining all around you. You head into a place that looks like a tailor's shop. The store girl takes one look at the group of you and dashes to the back.

A man comes out, with his hands held out and his elbows bent. "Alright, alright. Keep your pants on darling, just show me what is sooo special about these little people that..." He sees you all and the fay gestures and lisping speech stops. "Holy shit...you want your naga to be dressed...by me?" He asks.
>>
>>23781953
(Oh and you made a reservation at a Traveller's the damn things are everywhere here. They're like McDonalds.)
>>
>>23781953
"This naga thing is really getting tiring, havent you heard about the Dawnchasers?"
>>
>>23781953
To be fair...this doesn't look like the best shop. You picked it because it was the first place you saw. The windows are dingy and the lights aren't as bright as other places, but you saw the needle and thread sign so you went.
>>

>>23782009
exactly, and EVERYONE seems to mistake us for a naga, hence, 'this naga thing.'
>>
>>23781977

"This naga thing is really getting tiring, havent you heard about the Dawnchasers?"

The man sputters, and shakes his head. "Holy...the Liberators of Stone Hall? Right! You're a lamia, not a naga...sorry. I've only seen Nagas here, or people wanting me to dress their dogs." He sighs. "Oh, uhh..." He clears his throat and starts to put on that...style...of poise and speaking. "So, welcome to Garish Garments, I'm Gregory and I'm just so filled with happy and..." He looks at your faces. "Look...I hate doing the 'tailor' thing...and I already screwed it up. So, you can just go to Francois or one of the other guys who are better at being..." He flaps his hands. "Than me."
>>
>>23782031
I agree with you. They could be useful if Citadel hates him.
>>
>>23782034
Probe him with "It seems like there is more to the story."
>>
>>23782034
"Just show us what your clothes are like."
>>
>>23781953
Given the amount of money we're about to spend, let's not be afraid to abuse the name of the Dawnchasers a bit here, and to be picky; we're looking for a tailor that 1) recognizes the value to *themselves* of providing formalwear for heroes attending a King's ball (word of mouth is a wonderful thing), and 2) has at least a slightly better attitude than the average "oh, you want to play dress-up with your pet".
>>
>>23782034
"I want results, not a foppish act. Can you deliver that?"
>>
>>23782034
"Being like..." Tricia flaps her hands. "is a Tailor thing?" She looks at you. "Vincent was gay, back home, he never was like..." She flutters her hands.

"Yeah, well people have expectations in Grand Citadel...so I try. Usually people don't bring in their high class pets, I mean, not that you are one but...you know that others are...ugh. I'm really bad at this."

"Then why did you become a tailor?" Mage asks.

Gregory shrugs. "Cause I like making clothes."

"He's the best." The shopgirl says.

"Your my sister, your opinion doesn't count."
>>
>>23782068
this sums it up better then mine would have.

But we should see some of his other works first before proposing this. This can easily be done by going into his shop. He does not have to know we are doing it.

"Let me see what you got." You say smiling at him.

Gregory gets a tape measure from under his counter and walks over to you. "What kind of fabric do you like, you want it sheer or layered? Now, as for your tail, I can suggest a few things but I think that you have two options, I can either make the dress volumous so that your tail is hidden save for a little, or sheer so it looks like it's part of your body...Rosie get me my swatches..."

Okay, keeping this one quick, color, and poofy or sheer, and floral, ivy, or scale pattern?

Get some advice from the tailor and his sister. But in the absence of that: Elegant, white, sheer (we're bulky enough as it is), and either plain (gown-like) or scale if it must have a pattern. Having the fabric extend down the tail like a train would be nice, but we're not trying to *hide* it, just make something that doesn't look like it's a human dress with a tail hanging out.

"You want that as a theme?" He points at the red/green in your uniforms. "You know I like that style, but..." He starts sketching out a few things.

"How about this?" You say as you show him your Medallion.

"A clear stone? Oh! Okay...I got it."

Gregory's an amazing tailor, he's funny, gentle, and his skill with a needle is damn good. He flirts with Lea a little, who even blushes. He makes no attempts at all to change her bandages.

You end up with probably the best, nicest, dress you've ever had. It's white and sheer, with a faint eggshell on white Nine-Star with a clear glass 'gem' in the center.

He's done similar pieces with the others. White, and classy with a Claigo Clarus emblem worked subtly into the design.

"Thanks for coming in." Gregory says as you finish paying him and give him your address. "I'll finish the alterations and make sure you get them by tomorrow. Also...thanks for not...being...never mind." He sighs. "Have a good night, enjoy the market."

"Weird that he needs to act like..." Mari flaps her hands. "Just to get customers."

"All love is joyous in His Light." Lea says. "Though I admit, some stereotypes are more welcome than others."

The market is hands down amazing, kids run around with sparklers, there's a public dancing square, they're doing a full three act play in one area, and every where you look there seems to be something new to see or eat or join in. Music is always in the air, and everyone's smiling and having a good time.

The six of you are watching the play, some comedy about a guy who's gotten engaged to four women at once. You think the guy's a bit of a whiny ass, and the girls are overly insecure harpies too easily prone to violence...but everyone else seems to be laughing.

Someone taps you on the shoulder. You turn and it's a normal looking person in a paint covered smock.

"Excuse me, you are Lady Ssen Patrick, right? Leader of the Dawnchasers?"

No, not replacing them with the dress, just getting a separate battle outfit that uses the same awesome motif.

"Sure." You motion for Peri/Mari to come with you.

Oliver has two paintings under sheets. "Now, I was commissioned to do the official picture of the moment of victory. Something to put up in the Conclave's History Hall. I have a collection of the drawings and sketches and witness reports...that give me this." He unveils a painting of the moment of you all on the steps of the Conclave. Isen is raising his sword high, you're all there, Ester is tied up, you look disheveled, tired, and just glad that the horror is over.

"Thing is...well, I sell copies of my paintings...and this one...no one seems to like it." He shrugs.

"Well, that's what happened." Peri says.

"Yeah, yeah...so I took a little liberties, added a little flair, and style and I came up with this." He pulls away another sheet and shows...something.

You don't look like that. NO woman looks like that. You're pretty, yah, but the lips, the eyelashes, and the breasts are just...wrong. Peri's just as bad, same with Lea, who's lost most of her bandages, save around her arms. And Mage has been turned into a woman...a half-feral woman with a chain collar that Tricia wears. Tricia also got Oliver's generous paintbrush...you're also sure she never had antenna...no matter how cute they look. Isen's nowhere to be seen. (Okay so maybe it's not all bad.) But Tara's been returned to what she looked like back in Purple Sands.

This isn't a painting of what happened. This is a 15-year-old boy's masturbatory fantasy.

"This one is REALLY selling. Citadel likes it better," Oliver says. "But I thought before I sold more, or gave the painting to the museum, you should have a say in it...I'll cut you in for my profits, if that helps."
>>
>>23782451
Ah, I didn't want to ruin everyone's fun. Besides the one that would spot anything funny first would be Peri/Mari or Lea.
>>
>>23782469
Ask if the people of Citadel would doubt his talents when they see the real us walking around town.
>>
>>23782469
Give the realistic one to the museum, sell the liberty-taken one to the masses.

Are there any moral foibles with my plan?
>>
>>23782469
The first one. For the love of the all things holy, the first one.
>>
>>23782469
"Please put the real one in the museum..."
>>
>>23782533
The lack of taste for one.
>>
>>23782469
"I don't mind if people want to buy that crap but the museum should get the real one."
>>
>>23782544
Taste is irrelevant to money.
Ask for a cut of the profits.
>>
>>23782556
We got money coming out of both ears at this moment.
>>
The one that we actually look like probably should go into the museum. The other I think you should burn it.
>>
>>23782565
we actually spent a lot of it. I think we have 2-300 left.
>>
>>23782556
I would not want any money being made off that abomination of 'art' for anyone.
>>
>>23782565
We already have plans for the majority of the money though.
More money is never bad.
>>
>>23782469
"There's such a thing as a happy medium. That first one captured the 'tired and glad this is over' feeling of reality quite well, but I can understand that most people don't want to see a battle that way; they expect more from their 'heroes' than that. So, it's OK to paint the victorious triumph rather than the realities of battle. But this, on the other hand...battle is not *sexy*, and this doesn't even remotely resemble us except as a caricature. Find a happy medium: paint us as we are, warts and all, but as the triumphant heroes. I think you'll find that sells just fine, without turning it into something best hung over the bed in a house for ladies of negotiable affection."
>>
>>23782469
Let me just point this part out, because I think you may be missing the most important part of what Oliver just said. Please also remember Granny's warnings as well.

>"Citadel likes it better"

Just so you understand the consequences of this decision.
>>
>>23782596
And if you want something you can punch up for effect, you don't have to depict the *end* of the battle. Promise me you'll destroy *that* monstrosity [point to the second picture] and never speak of it again, and I'll give you the details to paint the *middle* of the battle. Of course, there are plenty of other artists around who could do that, as well..."
>>
>>23782611
damnit, as soon as i saw that line i KNEW it was a citadel trap.
>>
>>23782611
>"Citadel likes it better"

Yeah, we don't want to just pick the first one here; that's clearly the wrong choice. But I think asking him for something slightly more reasonable but still appealing to the masses would not disrupt Citadel's narrative.
>>
>>23782611
There a line in sand and that picture crosses it dammit!

Fine, BURN BOTH!

There, no ones happy.
>>
>>23782617
I like this, without threatening to destroy the two paintings. We ask him to make another one for the middle of the battle, but this time, as
>>23782596
said, a happy medium.

This way, Citadel does not get mad as we are choosing none of the above, and we still get an accurate representation for the museum.
>>
>>23782627
Remember, what does Granny equate Citadel to?
>>
>>23782596
"You should put the first in the museum and destroy the second. If you want a seller, paint one that has me crushing a ghoul, Tricia guiding a swarm of roaches, Mage is blasting an artifact of evil, Peri stabbing someone, and Lea fighting another ghoul with her bare hands."
>>
>>23782637
But we are not the heroes Citadel was looking for! And the second painting also showed us as a lamia, not a human or a half-human!
>>
>>23782611
mabie this? anyone else support?

"The first one should go to the museum. as for the second..."

"In the future I would appreciate it if you took far less liberties when depicting us, I wont stop you selling it, but I wont endorse it either. try to find a happy medium between the two."
>>
>>23782637
Spoiled child, it wants what it wants.

Let him sell the second, request the first be the one in the museum.
>>
>>23782654
A spoiled child needs to be taught a lesson.

Or at the very least, smacked upside the head.
>>
>>23782654
The best way to deal with a spoiled child is to either 1) give them what they want, but they will keep asking for more, 2) punish them, but they will lash back, or 3) distract them and they will move onto something else.

So we ask the painter to paint a second picture, a happy medium, for the museum as a distraction.
>>
>>23782669
not when the spoiled child can kill you or your friends/family.

thats the very definition of not staying low out of Citadel's sight, which we are trying to do after Granny warned us
>>
>>23782682
You'll find that I'm about a subtle as a sledgehammer.
>>
>>23782672
Yeah, this seems like the tiniest way we can push back just a *little* bit, without blatantly saying "NO!", by pushing for a happy medium that'll still satisfy. A battle picture will sell, and the victorious heroes can hang next to it in the museum even if most people don't buy it.
>>
win a war. Still feels like shit, even if it's a small thing like this. We have to convince the painter of why the truth is important if we don't want to throw it.
>>
>>23782654
Citadel doesn't compromise. The second picture has to be sold AND be put in the museum. Citadel wants to make you 'fit.' If you do, Citadel thinks you're okay and will move on. Otherwise...you, and those who love you, will have consequences.

I'm not going to stop you guys if you insist on flipping Citadel the bird...but just know what you're getting into.
>>
>>23782716
Again, this is NOT about Oliver. Oliver doesn't matter. Citadel wants to know if you'll play ball. It doesn't CARE about Oliver's actions anymore. It has the picture it WANTS, so Oliver's done.
>>
>>23782724
play along with Citadel, but buy the original for ourselves, and express our displeasure with his liberties, along with wanting a portion of the profits.
>>
>>23782724
>>23782738
I feel this is a bit weird and out of character information-y, but I had originally wanted him to sell the second version anyway, as that's his livelihood right there. If he explains that it has to be the same as the museum picture, then we should relent at that point, and tell him to use the altered one for both.
>>
>>23782752
This
>>
>>23782724
Sigh, seriously? Citadel won't settle for a punched-up battle scene, it has to have its insane sexy times?

Are the consequences at least *proportional* to how much we don't let Citadel have its way, or are we going to get curb-stomped by a moody city if we put a single toe out of line here?
>>
>>23782738
Fuck, this is a hard choice...

In some ways, I think we should say the first is better...we may lose a lot for it.

Suggest that the painter sell the second, as art's never been our area of expertise.
>>
>>23782724
If this how the ball is going to go. Where we have to always say what 'Citadel' wants or likes. Truthfully, I don't even want to go. Let's just get the hell out of this city. Fuck this noise.

No really this is how I feel. Maybe I don't express it well but at this point don't give a fuck.
>>
>>23782644
This, but add, "If you want to do something with extra money, you might consider contributing it to help the rebuilding of Stonehall.
>>
Give Citadel it's damn picture. We're not so prideful that we'll endanger our friends over our ego.
>>
>>23782795
I'll second this.
>>
OK, how about this: "Sigh. OK, here's how it's going to be. We didn't see this, we were never here, we certainly don't endorse it, and you just decided to paint that...thing...based on your own minimal information about us and the battle. And for completely unrelated reasons, you decided on your own to donate 60% of what you make from it to the Caligo Clarus, who have no idea where the money comes from. And 40% of the sales of that thing will still be more than 100% of the sales of the one that doesn't sell. Are we clear?"
>>
>>23782787
ask yourself, since when has a child's tantrum ever been proportional?

there is the probable answer, hence my hedge in us buying the first and citadel can do what it wants with the other

at this point we dont have nearly enough friends or influence to risk our friends lives on, we arent that prideful.
>>
>>23782814
>there is the probable answer, hence my hedge in us buying the first and citadel can do what it wants with the other

Yeah, agreed. That said, *when* we successfully destroy this little snot of a city-mind, that painting is going to be the first thing on the bonfire.

Citadel is trying out the idea that maybe Lamias aren't all monsters.

Which leaves this as the next option.
>>
>>23782768
It's not really, we've been warned about it by granny, this is more the information she already gave us popping up.
>>
>>23782799
This.
EG, would having Lea ask for pic 1 after we're done register for the Citadel?
>>
I just want to take a moment to point out the sheer level of awesomeness in storytelling required to have us all agonizing over this painting as though lives hang in the balance, which they do. *claps*
>>
>>23782814
I support your hedge, as it preserves in the museum a more accurate record of the events, but also provides the popular, consumable product that the city wants. We can play ball without selling our soul.
>>
"Use that one." You mutter through clenched teeth, pointing at the second one.

"WHAT?!" Peri/Mari ask.

"But I want to buy the first one off of you."

"Sure." Oliver says.

"Also, I want my share of the profits to be split, send half of it to Stone Hall for rebuilding help." You say. Ohhh, this cesspool of a city is going to get it. You actually almost sympathize with the Fey Court, even fairy rule would be less...less...THIS!

Oliver is very nice. He wraps up the painting and has it sent to your rooms at Travellers, he even writes you out a contract for the Stone Hall support.

He shakes your hand and goes his way. Peri/Mari are fuming at you, but the Stone Hall thing seems to have mollified them a little. "I suppose a little humiliation is fine if it helps a place that deserves the money." She looks around. "I think I want to get out of this place as soon as we can."

You head back to the play, but you can't enjoy it. It ends with the main character getting all four girls to agree to share him. It's sickening, unrealistic, and too perfect.

No wonder Granny prefers her sewer.

You turn to go back to the Traveller's when you see a little girl in front of you. She smiles a tooth-gap smile at you, hands you a flower, and then runs back to her mother.

The mom smiles at you. "She thinks you're pretty." She says with that smile moms get when children do something amusing and slightly embarrassing. "She's never seen a lamia before."

"Bye bye pretty lady!" The kid waves as she's hauled off.

Citadel's equivalent of a 'thank you' and a pat on the head.
>>
>>23782892
Grudgingly smile and wave back. We can't completely resist the affection of a cute little girl giving s flowers..
>>
>>23782892
You know, I only now realize that we could have prooobably gotten mage to be male, and perhaps conan-like, without anyone minding. Poor mage.
>>
>>23782892
ok that was pretty cute. and mabie the Citadel-mind might have lessened its monsterphobia, we actually got called a lamia for once.

give her a smile and wave.
>>
>>23782892
Citadel can go to hell. We're here to do good.

Hmm. If we can get Citadel into a no-win situation, maybe we can break the game. Any opinions?
>>
>>23782912
>>23782892
Yeah, the little girl has nothing to do with this on her end, even if she is being prompted by some kind of crazy city magic hivemind blood sacrifice

I still prefer heroquests. They're only blood sacrifices if you fail.
>>
>>23782912
And with that I'm going to call it a night and go to bed, please archive this for me, and I think everyone has suitable reason to hate Citadel now, correct? Tomorrow, the ball! Love, Romance, Revelations, You will fucking HATE me for what I'm going to do!
>>
>>23782919
Blow it up? Explosives is always the right answer.
>>
So, we just got metaphorically bent over for the sake of a childish city-mind's fantasy, and we can't do anything about it yet for fear of getting crushed by its narrative powers. But we already found out that the Paladins have little or nothing to do with Citadel. So, let's take all this anger we've just built up against Citadel and take it out on Odette, because the smoking crater would be theraputic.
>>
>>23782923
archive updated. just a note someone archived it without the thread number in the title, already sent an email to LL to try and fix it.
>>
>>23782923
Oh, ETA 3-20-13, 3-4 PST.
>>
>>23782949
>>23782923
Thanks for the questing! And I don't hate citadel so much, but I do see it as a problem.

>>23782945
Discharging anger through politics sounds... counterproductive
>>
Little late to add my input. But you went and did what I was planning anyway. Sell the second portrait, keep the first one. If and when we come back and kick Citadel in the balls we can replace the one in the museum with the "unique first edition".

Until then no point in rocking the boat until we are ready to have it sink to the bottom.

BEHOLD THE WONDROUS CITY OF GRAND CITADEL
>>
>>23782961
Truly a glorious hell isn't it?
>>
>>23782923
I quite enjoyed it, as usual, despite not being able to participate much.

Also, while I don't hate Citadel, per se, I was already of the "Stagnation is Death" camp.
>>
I'm glad that our faith predates the citadel, at least. If it didn't, sheeit.
>>
It just hit me: Citadel is That Guy, EchoGarrote is the DM trying to deal with him, and we're the player he met outside a session to plot and collude on a suitable demise for That Guy.
>>
>>23782982
I wonder, will we become a legit wielder or the light throwin down smites? Or do those simply not exist in this setting?
>>
>>23783004
Who knows! Only way to find out is to be MAD HOLY.
>>
>>23782985
Pretty accurate actually, if I may expand?

Citadel is the host for the games, provides the gaming space, the food, the drink, any decor.
But he likes what he likes, and if you dare to try and make him order pizza with anything but cheese on it, he will probably try and PK you.
>>
>>23783012
so like... the citadel player plays the city? and controls a squad of 5 masked dudes?
>>
>>23783072
more like, he doesent pay attention to anything not directly messing with his narrative, and when he plays his character its offscreen.

he only pays attention when they are HIS plot points being talked about/messed with, hence why he noticed us at Stone Hall, it was his plot point that got messed up, and we fixed it, and now he is trying to browbeat us into following his narrative of nothing ever changing and everything went ok.
>>
i'm sad we didn't get to see the inventor's thing. I don't know if he's lame or not.

also we have his only business card, we should return it. I guess personal free time is tomorrow's session though.
>>
>>23782923
>You will fucking HATE me for what I'm going to do!
The play was foreshadowing I'm assuming.

Ssen will get her harem because Citadel is going to strong-arm it into happening.
>>
>>23783369
>implying Isen isn't the one getting the harem
>implying the harem isn't tara and our gang
>>
>>23783381
Isen wasn't included in the painting, and we were told before that he was too egotistical to be controlled by Citadel, so I doubt it will do him any favours.
>>
>>23783400
eh, true enough. I was just predicting maximum torture.
