So, my computer shat the bed Wednesday, and I lost... well, pretty much everything, haha. I've got enough images to make this work, of course, and since I'm old fashioned, I kept most of my notes on paper, so I guess we lucked out there. Well, I did, anyway.

That said, this is pretty much a fresh install of everything- if the trip doesn't match, don't panic. Jump into IRC if you wanna ask me in person, haha.

Character sheet and short plot synopsis here: http://pastebin.com/zFxWNup1

++

You whistle, a low, sliding tone- like someone passing a massive train wreck.

“So that's the plan, huh? Get in, draw off their air cover, let the weasels do their work, and provide close air for the Marines and IJN?” You ask, skeptically.

Ice, at her podium at the head of the room, fixes you with a short glare, then nods. “That's the plan. The IJNAF and IJAF will be mirroring our mission from the north and north east, respectively. The Fleet will be launching their aircraft only as a BARCAP for themselves and a reserve. Launch is from here, this is also our return point.”

Goose holds up her hand, like she's in a school room. Ice pauses. “Yes, hon?”

“We're not going back to the fleet?” she asks, her voice carrying surprise and concern.

Ice shakes her head. “Not for now, no. PACCOM wants us here in Japan, and no, they haven't told me why.”

“Bet it has to do with Frank's girlfriend!” Slider hoots from the back of the room, causing your squadron to laugh and you to cover your face with your hand.

“You never said anything about a girlfriend! Mom and Dad are gonna be soooooo mad you didn't tell them!” Jess says, looking at you with big eyes and a mischievous grin. “I'mma call them when we get back and tell them!”

[] Other! (write in)

“She's not my girlfriend, Jessica. Just some psycho witch. Now pay attention.” You respond. “This ain't fun and games, and it's not MILES. It's going to be real shit flying before the day's out.”

“Our mission on this one is to focus on luring up- and then killing- as many Red aircraft as we can. Intel thinks most of their witches haven't been assigned to this front yet, and sightings bear that out. Other than some scattered Soviets, it's been strictly conventional on their end here on the islands.” Ice continues. “That said, we do know there's at least one hostile witch that can sneak past even Merlin, so watch out up there. I'll have the first element, that's Me, Slider, Maverick, Goose, and VMF-111. Frank, You'll take element two, that's You, the twins, Katya, Rosalie, Ayumi, and Katsumi.”

You nod.

“Usual deal, here, folks.” She says, leaning forward a bit. “Frank and the Twins have all our BVR capability, they'll keep us from getting swamped.” She looks over at you again. “No heroics. Let us know if you can't keep them out- Intel expects them to have a heavy air presence. More knockoff Mig-19s, at least, plus maybe some more modern aircraft. Once you're out of BVR, make a judgment call. If it looks good, get in and hit 'em. If not, bug out. Any questions?”

[x] “What else was I supposed to think Jessica?”

“Well what else was I supposed to think, Jessica?” You ask, biting back anger. “Your CO is incompetent and-” She cuts you off again.

“First, she's our acting CO. The major hasn't arrived yet. Second, don't talk about Domi that way. She's a good person, even if she does have anger management problems! She's done nothing but help us get squared away and even had good things to say about you!”

“That hardly excuses her behavior in the hangar, Jess.” You note. “She acts like that in combat and it's going to get real ugly, real fast.”

Jessica shakes her head. “I can handle myself!” says insistently, stomping her foot. “I grew up in the same family you did, and my scores in flight school are better than yours!”

“Bullshit.” You say, flatly. “I was the best grad they'd had since the thirties, they said so themselves.”

She shakes her head. “Look them up if you don't believe me! And besides I... “ She trails off.

[] “you what, Jess.”

“You what, Jessica.” You ask, softly.

“I'm worried about you, Frank. Mom and Dad are too.” She says, almost too quietly to hear. “The news is following you, back home, and... and they're always gushing over how you're always in the thick of it, you know? It's- we- they're trying to play you up, make you a hero, like some of those guys in Europe, but we're scared, Frank. You can't keep doing that.”

You shrug. “Jess, the news isn't-” she cuts you off.

“They're not telling the truth, we know. But Mom has contacts still, and they're not lying. You took a barely armed transit flight and turned it into earning an order of the golden kite by tangling with some new soviet superjet? Before that you took on some kind of flying supership that they're not saying anything about, but it couldn't have been easy, and then before that they said you got hit bad over alaska. Then over Tokyo bay, now you have some Soviet Bitch who thinks you're a god walking earth or something?”

She sighs. “How long can you keep it up, Frank? You're not a witch, you can't do the same things we can, and they can get you a whole lot easier. And now I'm scared that you're going to get hurt trying to protect me.”

She nods, and you can hear her sniffliling.

You put one hand on her shoulder. “Jessica, for some reason, the gods have given me the finest RIO in the fleet- and she is a witch. I've got shields, I've got guns, I've got missiles you don't have. I'm in the best combat aircraft in the solar system, and I'm privileged and lucky enough to fly with a group of witches with amazing talent- I have plenty of backup.”

which means it'll get revealed sooner or later as such a thing can't be hidden forever. Merlin would be the first to realize this, provided she even knows about them as she found a sign (the plane telling her Frank was making it do impossible things)

[x] “Don't be, Jessica. Remember the family motto? You're my sister. What kind of person would I be if I exempted you from it?”

“Don't be, Jessica.” You say, pulling her into a tight hug. “Remember our family motto? You're my sister. What kind of person would I be if I exempted you from it?”

Her muffled reply is lost against your shoulder.

“Look, it's going to be fine, ok?” You say, trying to sound soothing. “Let's just go get some food, ok? I think it's Rosalie's turn to cook, and she's pretty good at it.”

Again, Jessica's reply is lost against you, but she at least nods her head to the affirmative. It takes her a few minutes to dry off her eyes and wipe her nose- trying to hide that she's been crying. If not for the red rims around her eyes, you'd have a hard time telling.

You're waylaid as soon as you step inside though- Goose runs into you, knocking her on her rear and almost rocking you back a step. Almost- she's a small girl, really.

“Frank! Miss Ice was looking for you. Wanted to see you up in her office.” She says, as you help her to her feet.

[x] “Man, I can't even be gone for three minutes and things go nuts. Alright. I'll talk to you at dinner, 'k Jessica?”

“I go on one damn three day bender...” You mutter under your breath, wondering what in the hell came up in the past what? Five minutes? That's so important. “Hey, Jessica? I'll talk to you at dinner, ok? And if you need me, you know where to find me, ok?”

She nods.

Goose surprises you both by grabbing Jessica's wrist. “C'mon! We can go help Miss Rosalie cook! It'll be fun!”

Jessica smiles- she's always fancied herself a cook, even if she's lousy at it. Maybe Rosalie can help?

….more likely, you'll be digging into that stash of 'emergency' MREs you've got hidden under your bed.

Upstairs, Ice is sitting alone in the office, the door sitting open. She looks up when you enter. “Close the door, Frank.” she says, her voice serious. She's got a pair of envelopes sitting on her desk, along with a small black box.

“Catch.” She tosses it at you. Inside, a pale green ribbon with white stripes rests, a enameled medal hanging from it.

“That's from IJN command- with regrets they can't present it properly. Everyone's a little busy with the operation to take back the airport and surrounding area.”

You nod.

“the rest is bad news, I'm afraid.”

[x] “Aw hell. Might as well hit me with it now, then.”

“Might as well hit me with it now, boss. And hey, where's yours?” You ask, indicating the medal and sitting down.

“Well, it's mixed news.” She says. “Chance-vought wants the XF-02 back. They're recalling yours for the time being to work in some improvements. The Twins are losing theirs too.”

She sighs. “They want us to head stateside to help with testing. We'd be back at Miramar. Well, between there, China lake, and the Vought plant in Texas. That's why they put those girls here- to take our place.”

“That sounds- “ Ice holds up a hand.

“Wait, before you say anything, Frank. It's not all bad.” She says.

“The IJN has agreed to attach one of their best witch squadrons here to take our place. Katsumi and Ayumi would be staying and taking command. Goose's sister is supposed to be coming in to take over from Rand within the next couple of days as well.”

“What kind of time period are we looking at?” You ask, weighing it in your head. Not that you think you have much say in it, but still.

Ice shrugs. “Who knows? The vought engineers aren't estimating over two months, but they're saying there's a lot of work to do to it.”

She grins impishly. “I can see why you wouldn't want to go, I mean, I doubt your grilfriend would be able to follow...”

we should write a letter for Konstantina and tell her to come after us or threaten that if she hurts our sister there will never be anything between, something to make her angry/crazy/stupid enough to disregard orders and leave our sister and her squadron alone

By bringing her along?

No you see, the best way to keep fronk happy and keep the secrecy of the research:

Would be to leave her here in japan with Jessica, attached to her squadron.

Fronk won't need to worry so he'll be happy, top secret research won't be compromised, her prowess in war won't be wasted away from the frontlines and thus she'll be more useful, win-win for all.

“Aye, Ma'am.” you respond, glumly. Ice laughs again. “It's not all bad. At least you'll get the fan mail- after Intel's gone through it.”

“So when do we head back?” You ask.

“Right after we sortie tomorrow.” Ice says. “We'll land here, get a few hours rest, then load up. And they want the whole squadron- I guess China Lake has been working on some pretty space-age stuff they want to test out. Have your gear packed for a ferry flight.”

The small, cramped room was a luxury. It was a hole she could slip into, to separate herself from the rest of the world. The air, thick with humidity, calmed her. The dim lights and fuzzy shadows were a warm blanket. The hard bed was a place of comfort. Only the hum of the engine penetrated here. It was a womb, and she could think of no better place to collect her shattered thoughts.

Alive.

Natsumi Ogawa repeated the word to herself, quietly. Alive. Her sister had been lost, her memory attacked by the superiors that once praised her, charges of incompetence and cowardice staining her record. She was not expected to be able to stand trial and defend herself, but that was a trivial matter; for cases such as hers, no conviction needed to be reached. Once accused, the results were the same.
>>
>>23781281

Thanks ghost!

Now wheres mouse...
>>
Dead.

Natsumi's sister, Harumi, was thought dead. It drove Natsumi off the track, the carefully planned and executed series of events that were her life until now. Once the star child of her peers, primed to follow in Harumi's footsteps, news of her sister's downfall ruined her. Her superiors began to see her as the incompetent coward they believed Harumi to be. They belittled her, stoking the flames of her fury. Natsumi struggled to contain herself, to stifle the internal chaos that was dragging her off the track, but there is only so much such a young girl can do to control her emotions. Her performance suffered. Her manner became toxic. She found bitter pleasure in proving her now-malicious superiors right. Incompetent? Yes! Look! Do you see? The Ogawas are both ruinous! Ahaha, you believe in such a falsehood! Let you believe that until the day you die, not ever knowing how wrong and foolish you are!

But then she cooled. Natsumi was transferred, juggled, and abandoned. When she finally hit rock bottom, she was sent to a backwater pet project run by an American. Only then did she realize the folly of giving in to her emotions. She had told herself she was not incompetent, repeating that mantra as she purposefully embraced incompetence. Now she found herself surrounded by her chosen peers: fools and rejects. Why? What had gone wrong?
>>
Then she saw her. Natsumi found what had happened. Her sister had been involved in this very same program, no doubt brought to her demise by the witch before her, this Kuykendall now in charge. Look at her! Nothing special about her! She had no spark like Harumi had. She had no sense of honor or proper respect. She could barely even perform her duties! This Kuykendall was the source of her grief, reaping benefits without even earning them. Luck had chosen her over Harumi, and without Harumi, Natsumi was nothing.

Nothing.

But that was too much. In a brief moment of weakness, Kuykendall had made Natsumi look inside herself, and all she could see was nothing. The same lack of everything Natsumi once stood for, the lack of everything that made her hate this Kuykendall, that abhorrent void...it was as much there as here. Kuykendall and Natsumi were too much alike, and so Natsumi was deprived of even irrational hatred to comfort her.

She punches the bulkhead, enjoying the pain. It is good to know that she still feels. She had gone with Kuykendall, participating in her plan to push the pet project forward. The trainees had managed to pass. The submarine vessels that were made to carry them were completed. Sorties had been run. Martians had been killed. Peers had been injured. Life was becoming more routine, and for once Natsumi felt like the demons that had been hounding her had begun to grow bored, leaving her alone more and more.

>Ice laughs. “That's actually the other piece of bad news. Intel wants you to start writing her.”
Oh dear lord, we are gonna troll the poor yandere so very very hard.
>>
And then they met the Warmind. He was a strange creature, even for a Martian. Natsumi had gotten used to seeing the lone friendly Martian, a scientist, back at the base during training. He had been a typical speciment, with mannerisms that she noticed in the fleeing and fighting Martians spotted during missions. The Warmind, however, seemed to lack those basic instincts. He did not flinch the right way, he did not turn justly so, he did everything slightly off from what Natsumi had begun to expect. The Warmind radiated an aura of foreboding, as though he carried resentment with him wherever he went. It was disconcerting, but not nearly as much as what he had to say.

Your sister is alive.

No, he had not spoken the words in any fashion. He had mentioned the location of a captive witch, held by the former commander of the Martian forces in the area, was to be recovered and used as a kind of bargaining chip and trophy in his campaign against the proper Martian Military. The Warmind had only just escaped from the commander's clutches, but would no longer be accepted by the proper Martians; it was believed that the Warmind had defected, and it was much more convenient for the Martians for that fiction to be true. In exchange for the information, he was to be offered asylum.
>>
Natsumi had asked about the witch. What kind of person would allow themselves to be captured? It was then that she realized who the prisoner was. A witch captured around the time Kuykendall and the others were, badly injured by a botched attempt at capture. She was recovered separately from the others, and had to be carefully nursed back to health. Afterward, the prisoner had been experimented on, battered, and locked away. While Kuykendall and her friends had managed a miraculous escape with the help of the Martian scientist, Harumi had been left to face the torture alone.

And old wounds were reopened.

Natsumi punched the bulkhead again, a faint glow of magic illuminating the cold steel. Her fist collides with a solid thunk, denting it ever so slightly. Alive. Harumi was alive. A million thoughts rushed through her head. Is she ok? Is she still sane? Would she be proud to know what Natsumi had gone through, or would she hate her for it? Would she be put to death once recovered? Would the Americans protect her? Natsumi pushes her fist against the bulkhead, relishing the resistance it provided. Did she want her sister to come back normal, able to criticize Natsumi's performance during Harumi's captivity? Did she want her to be broken, so that Natsumi would never have to feel the biting shame of Harumi's disapproval? If Harumi came back and had only harsh words, Natsumi might fall back into that pit of nothingness...

hmmm send her photo's to tease her?

“Natsumi? Are you ok?”

A voice pierces through the hatch that separated her from the rest of the world. The voice was familiar and friendly. The Australian had found her, damn it all.

“I am fine, Odessa,” she replied.

“Are you sure? I heard thumping.” The worry in her voice was not what Natsumi wanted right now.

“I am sure. Please, just allow me to be alone.”

“...If you need anything, I'll be there for you.” Light footsteps somehow reach Natsumi's ears as Odessa walks off.

Kindness. Curse kindness! Natsumi gritted her teeth, examining her emotional state. Why is it that, when she was most ready to lash out and reject any contact, any probe that might upset her chaotic thoughts, it had to be the most kind and positive reassurance she could have? Why couldn't someone seek her out to berate her, to criticize her, to insult her? Then she could let go and work it all out without guilt. No, all her fellows were too kind and friendly for that. Even the deadened Boser was beyond that. There would be no external release.

At least, not until tonight. She smiled grimly. Yes. Tonight. Let the Martians fight back. Crushing them would provide a desperately needed release. Taking her sister back would simply be icing on the cake.

Additional updates to come, or may be found early on Tofusaur. And yes, it's relevant to SW89.

Send her photos with us in them, but like...in the background. Take a picture of a highway, we're standing down the road half behind a sign. Take a picture of a crowded restaurant, we're sitting in the back with the squadron.

It's like an infuriating version of Where's Waldo

This doesn't answer the important questions I had about SuWQ, like why is Socks so moe? and why was Yetta a more interesting character when she was dead?

I can only imagine the hell the spook reading our letters would go through every time we sent a picture...
>Here's me after playing volleyball with the squadron. I hope you enjoy

On a related note, it wouldn't be a good idea to remind her that we're the only male in our squadron would it?

Not unless you enjoy regularly defending everyone you love from nearly unstoppable Khornate Berzerker level rages as practiced by a Witch.

I'm sure we can find a couple of virile young American men to play some beach volleyball with for propaganda purposes.

That might actually be better than planned.

A nude photo would make it clear if she's undergone any surgical alterations.

Not if we write that they're asking about her, what is she like and all that like they're interested and want to meet her.

And because I'm horrible at juggling so many characters and also had problems committing to any ideas for her character and others. I'm working on it.

Or we could write her about the most patriotic shit of all time
>Today, I spent my time pondering the true meaning of liberty whist watching Bald Eagles fly over the Rockies. I listened to the American streams roar with the ideas of this boundless land, and the patriots who birthed it. I imagined the settlers awe upon viewing such magnificent American beauty...

I think that was mean to be sarcastic, mate.

Fronk already doesn't like the idea.

More to the point, letters can be interpreted differently so you can write them even if you don't want to.

Video letters will be much much harder, since he'll be unable to keep his dismay in check.
>>
>>23781442
I actually like your writing, but it is pretty cool that you are aware of and willing to admit to its flaws.

Keep improving homie.

A month ago I'd have been ecstatic to hear that. Well, as long as fools like you are around, I suppose I do have a reason to get better and keep going. Thanks.

I've done enough post-mortem hijacking. Enjoy the rest of your post-quest discussion, guys.

Frank is gonna wake up strapped to a bed while the crazy one does things to him.

At first it'll be scary and kind of sexy, but then she'll start talking about how mixing their blood will mean that we're together forever, and it goes downhill from there.

Don't stick your dick in crazy. It never ends well.

That...is amazing. Send her volumous letters about liberty boners. See if we can get her to defect.
>>
>>23781442
Hope you come back soon. I enjoyed your quest, especially when you got past the malignant self deprication. How did you keep the cast straight? Did you draw up notes on the characters?
>>
>>23782270
>liberty boners

I'm seeing her interpreting our letters as some kind of coded innuendo.

Next battle, she hops out of her strikers and tries to get Frank into her cockpit.
>>
>>23782331
How did I keep them straight? Here's a secret: I didn't. Part of the reason why I was so reluctant to commit to an idea for a character was that I was afraid of needing to keep things straight. You can probably see how that affected most of the early characters. When I brought up the recruits, though, I actually made proper sheets from the get-go. They're a little more concrete, but have their own issues I'd like to fix.

And don't worry about the self depreciation. I've...gotten over a lot of things. The Assault actually helped me get through it, but that's neither here nor there.
>>
Wait, I must be really behind on the times, but...

Strange is Kotters?
>>
>>23782546

strange isn't it?
>>
>>23782546
Yes. That whole "getting over a lot of things" part I posted? It involved me giving out my tripcode.

Either way, it makes a nice break between how I did things before and how I feel now.
>>
>>23782384
And the joke will be on her...it will be nothing but long horse rides, cruising in muscle cars, back yard barbeques, and line dancing. The confusion and frustration would be delicious.
