You are Ssen, a Lamia raised by a human Paladin who adopted you after killing the ones who birthed you. You are grown now, and Father has passed on. You have decided to see the world, and possibly become a Paladin like your Father.

You are accompanied by your best friend from childhood, the insect druid Tricia; Mage, a magic user who ran away from his family of cannibal raiders known as the Ghouls (Yes, his name is Mage. It was his idea); Persephone, a 22-year old thief/ex-guerllia fighter (She goes by Peri), and Mary, a 13-year old prodigy scholar/now sniper, who has her mind and soul trapped within Peri's body; and Lea, a deeply religious musician/martial artist, trained by her father, a famous trainer for arena fighters, she's covered from her mouth down in bandages to hide the horrific state her body has become thanks to the 'cures' that saved her from cancer.

Your journey continues...

Adderall, caffeine and a habanero buttplug.

Ancient Chinese secret.

The execution of Robin, Barney, Gregory, and Ambrose was derailed, thanks to a miracle. His Light shown down upon Citadel and showed these men to be innocent of an wrong doing.

(Any help that you six might have provided to cause said miracle isn't something that needs to be examined. Though you may owe the executioner a fruit basket or at least a get well card.)

Paladin Odette, seeing her last chance at regaining her high and mighty status, snapped, and in that moment allowed the Citadel's influence to take complete control over her.

She ran to the Cathedral, to destroy what she felt was the rest of the Claigo Clarus. Father's statue and the book of records, that chronicled all those who served the Guiding Light during the Citadel Ages.

You pursued her, and managed to get by all the tricks and assaults Citadel threw in your way. You caught Paladin Bobbi Odette, and offered her your forgiveness and a chance at salvation. The woman spat it back into your face.

Uncle Julian arrived to inform you that the King had declared this day to have Not Existed, there was no botched execution, the men were never charged, and Paladin Odette wasn't in any sort of trouble. You released her.

However, Odette's arrogance wasn't done yet. Maybe she didn't want to be in a world where a lamia could be a Paladin, maybe she didn't want to accept that she was Wrong and live with that, maybe she just wanted to spite you and your forgiveness. Perhaps all of it, Citadel, and more.

Either way, she leapt out of the tallest window of the Grand Cathedral and fell to her death.

She didn't go splat though, you ran out to see her in one piece, dead, but her face was calm and smiling, like she was content.

And since this day doesn't exist, she never committed suicide. She's dead, and her soul is free to go to His Light...or whatever happens to those that die inside Citadel's walls.

Julian has also told you that your Paladin confirmation is tomorrow.
>>
Alright thank Julian for the information. Ask if he knows where the former prisoners went We should go find Sophia, Gregory and the others. We have plans to make and people to get out of Citadel.
>>
>>23847622
The group watches as the Red Occuli take Odette's body away.

"Is it wrong that I don't feel bad for her?" Mari asks.

Lea shakes her head. "Morn the loss of a life, not for the life that was already wasted."

"Uncle?" You ask. "Where are Gregory, and Barney, and the others?"

"They're gathered at the tinkers house." He said. "I think they were throwing everything they could into a wagon."
>>
>Stone Hall, thanks to the trauma of the attack and the generic screw up of the Humors, isn't part of Citadel anymore. It's a safe zone like the Caligo Clarus attic.
So does that mean it would act sort of like monteriggioni in Assassin's Creed 2?

>>

"I think I'll go talk to them about what happened today. Do be sure to tell me when we schedule odette's funeral. It's a shame."
>>
>>23847781
Alright sounds like they have the same idea as us. Lets go talk to them,
>>
>>23847796
At Barney's workshop you see four men loading up the wagon with an assortment of scrolls, and a bunch of clothes, furniture, and other personal goods.

"No, no." Barney says. "That's a special barrel. You put ice in this bladder and it makes the drinks cool when they come out of the spigot!"

"We don't have room." Gregory says. "Remember, we have to go get Ambrose's books."

"You can always build another Barnabas." The old man says.

"Do you know how long it took me to properly treat and sow the pig bladders inside of that thing? Anyway, Trapper's books would fill this thing two times over!"

"I don't see why you three have to leave." The fourth man says, you don't recognize him. He's an elf, but he's also got a mass of hair hanging over his eyes. "You got pardons."

"From the king, yeah...but I don't want to stay and see if the citizenry change THEIR minds on it." Gregory says.

"Aww, that one's my favorite!" Barney says about the calling card press.

"It almost got us killed!" Gregory snaps.
>>
>>23847781

We should go check up on them. Stonehall may have a good use for an inventor, and I'm sure a librarian and master tailor can find some work there. It may do them good to move there and see if they can carve out a better life for themselves than in the shadow of Citadel. It may behoove Ssen & Co. to see them safely to Stonehall if it isn't *too* out of the way from the path to Bronze Peaks. Besides, Ssen may also want to catch up with Granny about some other stuff.

It might also be a good idea to catch up with Robin and see what his long-term plans are. While he's undoubtedly biding his time for a chance to get the Nightmare back to the Fey, some talking to him may convince him that letting the Nightmare tag along with us might be in the best interests of the Fey (us working actively against Citadel and/or to the ruin of Citadel = good for Fey). It might be worth seeing if we could convince him and/or his band to join up with us.
>>
>>23847894
"Aww, but that one was one of my favorites too!

So where are you all going?"
>>
>>23847894
"Technically, Paladin Odette's need for a scapegoat got you nearly killed."
>>
>>23847894
Suggest heading to Stonehall. We have something to discuss with them, and we'll join them there shortly.

I kind of wish we could go with them avoid them falling foul of Citadel dickery on-route, but we can't really afford to miss our induction into the paladins if we want to rescue Isen.

sorry for the terribad phone picture quality, but I wanted to share my WIP group portrait with you guys. I'll actually scan it when I'm done, but I am not always around when the thread is going, so I wanted to at least share this. I love the quest so far, and Echo, you are a brilliant DM.
>>
>>23847894
How big is our wagon again? Because I don't think we ... well I wouldn't mind helping move some of Ambrose's books. Knowledge is always a powerful tool to have on hand. That is if they're heading to Stonehall. (Think that's what that place was called.)
>>
>>23847970
"Aww, but that one was one of my favorites too!
So where are you all going?"

"Whoa!" The elf says. he's munching on an apple. "She really is a lamia!"

"Our savior!" Barney says. He goes over to you and hugs you kissing you on both cheeks. "Oh, a thousand thank yous, your prayers brought us a miracle!"

Gregory nods. "I can't thank you enough for what you did for Sophie. We decided that an extended vacation might be a good idea. White Tree's nice this time of year, and not too far."

Ambrose nods. "We were just deciding what Barnabas can keep or leave, before going to my place."

"They're bolting." The elf says.
>>
>>23848079
"You know, if you went to Stonehall I could send a letter with you, put in a good word for you. It might help you get set up there."

I think sending them to a place where Citadel has no control is probably the best bet. It was Stonehall that had its Citadel control broken, yes?
>>
>>23848079
Just going to say what I said yesterday, about recommending they head to stone hall and all that. That and dwarven materials to help the inventor and whatnot.

Though... white tree would be amusing once we get our paladinship.
>>
>>23848079
(Which one was white tree? I know we passed it.

Was that our hometown? I can't recall. Also, is stone hall on the way to bronze peaks?)
>>
>>23848079

"After what's happened, I'm not surprised. If you want, the Dawnchasers will escort you out of Citadel once my confirmation is done."

"You know, if you went to Stonehall I could send a letter with you, put in a good word for you. It might help you get set up there."

"Stone Hall?" Ambrose asks. "That's on the other side of the kingdom. That's a long journey for an old man like me."

"Not to mention that the place was broken by the Ghoul attack." Gregory sighs. "I can't raise Sophie in a refugee tent."

"Sea air is disagreeable to me." Barney says.

"They're making excuses." The elf says.

"Shut up Widdy!"
>>
>>23848079
"I don't know about white tree, I've been there once and they weren't too friendly.

Maybe stone hall? They need skilled businessmen like yourselves now more than ever, rebuilding after the ghoul attacks."

>>23848160
"What happen to Robin? Already took off I take it."

The group shrugs.

"Saw him heading towards the stables." 'Widdy' says, still eating his apple.

"Damnit!" Tricia mutters. "Don't tell me..."

"You've got to admire his persistence." Mage says.

>>23848263
>EchoGarrote, how powerful a degree of control does Citadel have over White Tree? Is it solidly under Citadel control?

Not overly powerful, whisper in the back of the head, and dreams, but no plays or people as far affected as your friends were. No town has too strong of a Citadel grip.
>>
>>23848289
Okay. I'll change it, next thread.
>>
>>23848331
Well, in that case I guess they would be safe (for the most part) in White Tree. I'm not sure whether it would be safe to tell people about what Citadel really is there though. I'm not sure quite how badly it would react to people knowing the truth.
>>

>>
>>23848361
We could mention the benefit of reconstruction for the inventor, what with all the dwarves about.

We might be able to refer sophie to granny. She might know a thing or two.

Plus I think if we offer ourselves as escort that might sweeten the deal.

Say that as we rush off to get nightmare.
>>
>>23848206
"Okay, look, there's only so much that I can say here, but I would STRONGLY advise Stone Hall over anywhere else."
>>
>>23848376
As do I. Let's let it go for now. Their objections could just be Citadel's last attempts to keep them from escaping its grasp completely. We'll bring the topic back up on the road.
>>
>>23848230
Give a sigh. See if Lea or Tricia want to go and stop him /if/ he's going after that Nightmare again.

"White tree is ... nice, but has continuing issues with the fey court from the last I heard.

>Not a lie!

"I would strongly consider Stone Hall if I were you guys. After the ghoul attack they'll be looking for any help they can get."
>>
>>23848206
"We'll be heading to Stone Hall ourselves as soon as possible. So we could escort you there, it would probably be a damned sight safer, you did tell me before about your issues with bandits last time you tried to leave, after all."
>>
>>23848230
"Well, I should probably attend to that. I do suggest you re-think white tree, they weren't the nicest of people when I visited. You know my suggestion of stone hall, so I won't nag you with it. Now I'll be off to convince robin to stop stealing my horse in a town filled with guards."
>>
>>23848398
>>23848396

"Okay, look, there's only so much that I can say here, but I would STRONGLY advise Stone Hall over anywhere else." You say.

"They can't afford it." The elf says.

"Ssen, that jack-off is stealing our horse! Come on!" Tricia pulls on your arm as the others take off towards the stables.
>>
>>23848450
"Don't go anywhere before I get back."

"Robin doesn't come cheap." Mage says as he counts Gregory's gold. "Think we should use this to buy those guys another wagon...and a horse?"
>>
>>23848880
"It would probably be a good idea, let's take it back to them and let them know."
>>
>>23848880
"Well, it's their money, but we can strongly suggest they purchase those things, yes!"
>>
>>23848831
We promised to come right back to the other three. Go back, give them the money Robin just gave us, and since they already know a fair bit about Citadel, tell them that Stone Hall is free of the influences that attacked Sophie's mind, and that it's one of the only places in the world that is.
>>
>>23848952
I suppose we could tell them that, as long as we don't actively tell them it's Citadel doing it, letting that much slip should be safe.
>>
If we convince the three to go to Stone Hall, then we should offer them an escort.
>>
>>23848930
"It would probably be a good idea, let's take it back to them and let them know." You say.

The men are very happy to see an extra wagon, Barney especially. Gregory's a little miffed that you spent his money, but he admits that he'd probably use it on exactly this.

"Also, give Robin my thanks." He says. "He's a real solid guy, for being a Fey Court elf."

"Something wrong with being an elf?" The new elf says.

"Nothing, Widdy." Gregory sighs. "That's why I said 'Fey Court' elf, there's a difference between those guys and you."

"Mmh." Widdy says.

"So, you were making a case for Stone Hall?" Ambrose said. "That's a long journey for people like us, ladies. It's one thing to travel with what's on your back, but we're going to have to take our whole lives across the country."
>>
>>23848973
They already know that there's something very wrong with Citadel:
http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/23830319/#p23831878
> "Anyway, I asked him and he laughed and said he prefered a place that smelled as bad as he thought Citadel was. We became friends."

We shouldn't go into detail, but they know more than most.
>>
>>23849016
"If you're willing to wait until after my paladin confirmation, me and my friends will be willing to escort you there. We have business to take care of at Stone Hall anyways."
>>
>>23849016
"I can't tell you all the details here, it wouldn't be safe, but what I can say is that Stone Hall is one of the few places out there you'll be free from the cause of your bad luck and Sophie's fears."
>>
>>23849016
"Stone Hall is one of the few places in the world completely free from...unwelcome influences in your mind and in your life. The same influences that nearly drove Sophie mad, and got you executed.

Plus, we'd be happy to offer you an escort there. And there are a lot of opportunities in a rebuilding city."
>>
>>23849046
>We have business to take care of at Stone Hall anyways.
What business? We planned to go to Bronze Peak next, after we *possibly* stuck around this vile place long enough to get our Paladin on, and figured out how to help Isen.)
>>
>>23849016
"Stone hall is free of what's been bothering sophie and to a lesser extent, the rest of you."
>>
>>23849132
That's where Robin is going to drop off the Nightmare.

Plus, I think it would be a good idea to talk with Granny again, especially now that we've made contact with the possible Fifth Humor.
>>
>>23849132
I've been asking where stone hall is in relation to bronze peaks for a while now.
>>
>>23849132
For one thing, it's a safe place to tell our friends what's really going on without Citadel reacting.

Secondly, we need to find out what happened in the big gap in the history books between the Caligo Clarus overthrowing the Dragon Who Dwells In Darkness to Citadel's golden age. I figured since Granny has been around for literally centuries, she might know more.
>>
Could we get a rough description of the map as we know it? What relative directions are Stone Hall, Bronze Peak, White Tree, and Citadel from each other, and how far apart in days of travel?
>>
>>23849046
"If you're willing to wait until after my paladin confirmation, me and my friends will be willing to escort you there. We have business to take care of at Stone Hall anyways."

The four all stare at you.

"You're becoming a Paladin?" Barney stares.

"Well done! Well done!" Ambrose says as he come up to shake your hand. "The Caligo Clarus rises up once more! Oh, you MUST let me be your lore master...you'll need a court, and...and...oh I have all the materials you'll need." He laughs and he looks thirty years younger. "Do you have a tower? You simply MUST buy a tower! The Stone Hall lighthouse! Oh, there's so much to DO! Come on boys, I know exactly what books I need to bring!" He starts to walk towards his home.

"Light above," Gregory says. "Never saw ol'Trapper like that." He smiles and then sighs. "But the long journey, Sophie's still reeling, and I have to turn her over to the Mage's soon."

"Stone Hall is one of the few places in the world completely free from...unwelcome influences in your mind and in your life. The same influences that nearly drove Sophie mad, and got you executed."

"Really?" Gregory says. "Look, I can't...I don't think I can pay the traditional tithe to you for the escort."

Widdy leans over and whispers. "Don't offer it for free. Greg hates charity."
>>
>>23849167
The concern was never "telling our friends without Citadel reacting"; Citadel would react to their knowing, not just to their being told.
>>
>>23849197
"Then you'll just have to owe us one of your fantastic machines, now won't you?"
>>
>>23849197
>"Really?" Gregory says. "Look, I can't...I don't think I can pay the traditional tithe to you for the escort."
>Widdy leans over and whispers. "Don't offer it for free. Greg hates charity."

"We're working to help rebuild Stone Hall. If you'd like, you could offer your help to the lizardfolk there; I'd consider that more than payment enough for an escort, and it would also help you get started building a life there."
>>
>>23849197
I have no idea what a cheap (but not insultingly so) tithe for escort would be, not knowing how the economy of this setting works.

Whatever it is, suggest that.
>>
>>23849178
Citadel and Stone Hall are on opposite shore. White Tree is half the distance but more in a south direction. Bronze Peak is closer to Stone Hall than Citadel, and Northern, but you'd get to Bronze Peak before you'd get to Stone Hall if you went there from Citadel.
>>
"You could always make me that armor."
>>
>>23849226
"We're working to help rebuild Stone Hall. If you'd like, you could offer your help to the lizardfolk there; I'd consider that more than payment enough for an escort, and it would also help you get started building a life there."

"So, I'd be signing up for indentured servitude?" Gregory says.

"Sound pretty good to me." Barney says.

Gregory still looks reluctant. Now you understand why he's been able to resist Citadel, Ambrose has his knowledge and Barney has endless curiosity...Gregory's more stubborn than rocks.
>>
>>23849230
Thanks!

>>23849197
"Gregory, you offered to make us some armor of the same style as the finery from the ball. Perhaps you could offer us a discount on that as payment for the escort?"
>>
>>23849230
About how big is the continent?

Does it adjoin any neighboring continents?

Is citadel a point on the map, or a region?
>>
>>23849277
this works very well as a reply
>>23849279
>>
>>23849277
"I see it as less indentured servitude and more of an exchange of favors."
>>
>>23849356
And to add to that:
"And I suspect that once the people of Stone Hall see your work, you'll have more business than you know what to do with. Not just any tailor could make a dress that fits a tail, after all."
>>
>>23849277
To segue from the "indentured servitude" thing before replying with something else, "I only mentioned it because I thought it might help you start drumming up business; I would never suggest you offer any more of your services for free than you considered equal to the tithe you would choose to offer. But in lieu of that..." (the armor suggestion)
>>
>>23849470
this works well and I support it.
>>
>>23849279
"Gregory, you offered to make us some armor of the same style as the finery from the ball. Perhaps you could offer us a discount on that as payment for the escort?"

He tilts his head back and forth. "It depends on the materials, and if you want to do it in a traditional Paladin style, or whatever Old Trapper finds. Not to mention I'm going to have to take all new measurements. You'll be owning ME after this trip...okay." He nods. "Fine, that'll work."

"Blessed be the Light." Barney mutters.

>>23849333
Citadel Kingdom is about as big as North America, give or take. North is uncharted tundra which gives to Arctic, south is predominantly desert and savannah, Purple Sands is the southern most town. River's Crossing is closer to White Tree but is closer to Stone Hall than Citadel.

Citadel is a region. It's massive. Two tokyos can fit inside it, and it actually spills into the ocean as well, there's a whole swath of the city that's technically in open water...but you'd never tell because it's all Citadel. The city is EATING the continent.

The only other known Continent is across the ocean from Citadel. The Phoenix Empire. The only thing you know about it is that it's there, and Isen has to marry a princess from it.
>>
>>23849543
>Purple Sands is the southern most town.

I should say City. There's plenty of small towns and villages at river fords, and forests, and crossroads of the King's Road.

First Wood is between Purple Sands and Citadel, there's mountains between the two smaller cities, and a big lake and a bigger forest at First Wood's area.
>>
>>23849543
>He tilts his head back and forth. "It depends on the materials, and if you want to do it in a traditional Paladin style, or whatever Old Trapper finds. Not to mention I'm going to have to take all new measurements. You'll be owning ME after this trip...okay." He nods. "Fine, that'll work."
"owing", I assume? Because after the indentured servitude comment...

"I suggested a discount, not a gift; if the armor is anywhere near as impressive as the finery, it'd be indentured servitude indeed to ask for it for free. Take what you'd offer for the tithe, cut it off the price, and we'll happily pay the rest.

As for the style, we all greatly liked the symbolism you drew from my medallion, and I'd love to see some armor with that motif. I don't have any particular attachment to the traditional garb of Paladins in general, but I'd certainly like to see what Ambrose finds about the Caligo Clarus, which would hopefully fit with that same motif."
>>
>>23849585
We need a cartographer now.
>>
Now that thats cleared up we should ask about people who similiarily don't seem to fit in and wouldn't be oposed to joining this little caravan.
>>
We should visit [s]Asia[/s] The Phoenix Empire some time.
>>
>>23849631
Sounds like a plan. After we get the details of the armor and the trip settled, "Do you know anyone else who feels the same way about Citadel that you four do, and who tends to have a lot of little things go wrong in their life when they do anything that doesn't fit in?"
>>
>>23849625
I asked in case I want to give it a whack. but I am terrible at it and it will come out like a child's drawing, made in MSpaint, if I even do it.

So, you know, feel free to take the reigns.
>>
>>23849631
it should be a "stone hall relief" caravan. For people who want to help stone hall more than they want to stay in citadel.
>>
>>23849605

"Fine, fine. I get it. Citadel bad, Stone Hall good. I'm in I'm in, just...stop with the speeches." Gregory grumbles. "I'll go get Sophie's stuff."

"He's like that." Widdy says. " He chews his apple and thinks. "Hey, this a whole caravan now?"
>>
>>23849712
It is looking like it.
>>
>>23849678
Do it. You probably will do a better job than me, and all we need is a rough picture to help us in future planning.
>>
>>23849712
"Why, you want to come too?"

I seem to recall that Widdy was the fruit seller who's shop stunk for some unknown reason, so he's probably suffering from Citadel related dickery as well.
>>
>>23849712
It's certainly starting to look like it.
>>
>>23849712
"I am genuinely thinking about making it that way."
>>
>>23849712
>"He's like that." Widdy says. " He chews his apple and thinks. "Hey, this a whole caravan now?"

>>23849743
This.

Also, this seems like a good cue for:
>>23849631

And,
>>23849696
That should be the stated motivation, yeah. Citadel might retaliate against people who just want to leave, while helping Stone Hall provides a good excuse that can just happen to be true.
>>
>>23849739
I'm going to make a simplistic black and white affair that we can easily update, then.
>>
>>23849743
>>23849753
"It's certainly starting to look like it." You sigh. "Why, you want to come too?"

He nods. "Had enough, store stinks from storm drain linked to sewer. Keep saying they'll fix it, never will. I'll go, bring food too for fee. Need a wagon." He says.
>>
>>23849803
"I'm sure we can figure something out. I'm confident there are many like-minded people who would love to help rebuild Stone Hall."
>>
What's the closest city to Citadel in the same direction as Stone Hall and Bronze Peak, but far enough away that Citadel can't actively shape the world in its image other than by whispering in people's minds?

It'd be good to know the best staging area outside of Citadel, plus unless this group wants to hang around for our Paladin ceremony, we might want to escort them there and come back, just to get them out of here as soon as possible.
>>
>>23849803
"By His light. That's the most I've ever seen Widdy speak." Barney says as he keeps loading up his now-personal wagon with his blueprints and inventions. "He must be ecstatic."

"Okay, I have to ask." Mage says. "Is Widdy your ACTUAL name?"

Widdy shakes his head. "Illya Widdershins."
>>
>>23849846
I imagine our trip out of citadel will be a big flight scene, though, and I doubt we will be able to come back after that.
>>
>>23849846
First Wood, if you don't mind the cross circuts from the Fey Court.

Other than that, just small towns like River's Crossing, or little blips on the map like Jubilee.
>>
So, they already had one wagon, and we bought them a second one with their own money; is that not enough to hold five people (Gregory, Ambrose, Barney, Sohpie, and Widdy) and their stuff? Because in theory *one* wagon held our entire party, albeit with far less stuff.
>>
>>23849803
I'll get things started, see about hiring or buying some more wagons and horses to move them. If any of you can think of anyone else to join this send them my way will you?
>>
Okay, you guys make smart decisions, I'm working on a terrible, terrible map.

Oh god it is hard to draw, doubly so with a mouse.
>>
question? How much money do we have? Last thing I knew we had around 200 gold left right?
>>
>>23849873
Oh, I'd expect trouble far sooner than that. Personally, I'm betting that right after we get our Paladin on, Citadel starts trying to influence Paladin minds to order us around.
>>
We can blow it all here in Citadel. It is a big journey. We got new gears already, so we won't need money for that for a while. Any one we can save here will be helpful for the future war efforts.
>>
>>23849903
That was before becoming the Hero of Citadel, though.
>>
>>23849924
precisely why I am asking
>>
>>23849882
Your stuff is your weapons and supplies. Their supplies are their entire homes, and business supplies, and all the stuff they've acquired over their lives. They aren't traveling, they're moving.
>>
Question for Gregory, since his resistance to charity would probably also extend to not giving us a low figure for the "tithe" for an escort: "How much would a typical 'tithe' be for an escort like this, anyway? Not like I've had much experience offering services as a Paladin; I kinda figured most services were done for the sake of doing good, really, so the idea of getting paid something other than a bounty or unexpected reward is kinda novel to me."
>>
>>23849962
That's what I figured, yeah. So, two wagons could carry Gregory, Sophie, Ambrose, and Barney, and a subset of their stuff (packing light and leaving some things), but not Widdy, and not any of us?
>>
>>23850001
I believe we actually have a wagon, but it might be a bit small since it only required Nightmare to move... though he is a magic horse.
>>
>>23850017
Our Nightmare needs a name. How about Agro?

What could go wrong?
>>
>>23849977
"How much would a typical 'tithe' be for an escort like this, anyway? Not like I've had much experience offering services as a Paladin; I kinda figured most services were done for the sake of doing good, really, so the idea of getting paid something other than a bounty or unexpected reward is kinda novel to me."

"Typical is 100 gold a head, but that's just to White Tree." Barney says, as Gregory has gone off. "You'd probably be able to charge 500 gold per person, and a lot extra if they have another wagon. Half of what they're paying for is the reputation and prestige of having a Paladin escort and arriving with a Paladin." He says as he starts to load up his clothes. "It's supposed to be a good Omen, how His Chosen are bringing your own Light with you as you travel. Also, no one's stupid enough to attack a Paladin."
>>
Unless you are insane or bring an army.
>>
>>23850001
Okay, I'll make this simple. With the group you have, including Widdy, to move everything they want, you'll need three full wagons, your traveling wagon, and the horses/oxen to pull them. Even then, someone will always be walking. To get all of that will leave you with about 10 gold in each of your party's pockets. Of course, other people may come, and they will pay you whatever rates you choose to charge.
>>
Is stone hall a coastal city?

Am I right in assuming stone hall is on the opposite coast of citadel?
>>
>>23850065
and unfortunately the kind of people we are looking for aren't going to be exactly rich. Citadel doesn't like them so they don't get all that much business for one reason or another. It wouldn't be right to charge them more then a pittance.

Time for a group conference. Pity we can't hit up Isen for cash or ask Tara about the winnings she made in the arena.
>>
>>23850017
A Nightmare is 50% stronger than a large horse, or twice as strong as a light horse, at least according to standard lore.

>>23850065
>three full wagons, your traveling wagon

All full to capacity, or does that leave room for one more passenger (since before Widdy it sounded like two wagons would suffice not counting us).
>>
>>23850107
Honestly, this won't be the last time we travel, and a small caravan seems preferable here. I'd suggest that other than taking Isen and Tara if they want to go, we ought to go with this.
>>
>>23850065
To any who come: "It is entirely up to them what they choose to pay us, if anything. From a smile to a fortune, it's all the same.
>>
>>23850104
Yes, Stone Hall is on the coast.

It's called Stone Hall because of all the really big tunnels and arches carved into the cliffs. It's a tiered city.
>>
>>23850110
>All full to capacity, or does that leave room for one more passenger

Sophie, and two people who are tired of walking will be riding in the traveling wagon along with a few more stuff.

Everyone else walks.
>>
>>23850162
>Everyone else walks.

What about the snaketrain?
>>
>>23850162
sounds fine to me, wagons are not exactly fast to start with.

>>23850180
bad idea if something DOES ambush us(90% chance heh)
>>
>>23850180
Well, if Tricia wants a ride, sure. But we're not a taxi service, and more than one person would get tiring fast.
>>
>>23850196
Heh, okay Tricia only.

:3
>>
>>23850193
Okay, so you buy another wagon for Widdy and help him, Ambrose, and Gregory get ready to move. Gregory sends a letter to the wizards at Stone Hall that he'll be letting Sophie study with them when she arrives. By this time, the word has gone out that there's a caravan of people who are leaving Citadel to go to Stone Hall to take advantage of the new opportunities there. Also, that it'll be escorted by the Hero of Citadel, the Paladin Serpent herself.

6 groups want to come with you as well.

A butcher and his family. (Wife, two sons)
A carpenter and her husband.
Two bakers who live together.
A bricklayer and his family (5 kids, and the wife is pregnant)
A mortician.

They have their own wagons and beasts of burden. How much are you going to charge them for the honor of being in...well...the Serpent's Trail?
>>
>>23850400
100 gold a head, no charge for kids, and no charge for extra wagons?
>>
>>23850400
Tell them to give something they can spare which they feel they would like us to have. They don't have to give us anything if they don't want to or if they can't afford it, but truly ANY gift, no matter how large or small, will be appreciated equally. It's the gesture that counts.
>>
>>23850400
How about a hundred per wagon? It's potentially less than the traditional hundred-plus per head, but still reasonable.
>>
... it really depends on how well off they are financially. If its all they can do to afford to move then nothing. If they can afford it I say anywhere from 10-100 gold. If they exclaim at the price. say you don't feel right charging more for protecting innocents.
>>
>>23850423

Seconded.
>>
>>23850400
Before we accept anyone, we should talk to them. We're looking for people who had trouble with Citadel in the past. We're not looking for people who *are* trouble from Citadel.
>>
>>23850422
Assuming we accept them (which has little to do with money), then this.
>>
>>23850449
Glad to see someone else remembered we're supposed to be a Paladin or, rather, simply a good person.
>>
>>23850400
I'd vote we don't accept *anyone* who we can't get one of the existing members of the caravan or someone else we know very well to vouch for personally.

Exception: if we talk to them about things that Citadel would rather they don't talk about, and they show all the signs that Citadel hates them, consider them, *maybe*. But we can always make another trip in the future.
>>
>>23850419
>>23850423

Everyone can afford 100 a wagon. But that price might make them uneasy at how cheap it is. Citadel can work on that fear. People might bail, because Citadel will make them think it's a trap.

The bakers and the bricklayer can't afford 100 a head, even with the kids ride free. They do offer to make it up with indentured servitude to cover for it.

The mortician gets a lot of grief, but that might not be Citadel. People naturally act weird around the guy who takes care of the dead.

The bricklayer always has enough money to feed his family and is happy, but wants to give his kids a chance to not have to follow in his job. He kinds dislikes always having to constantly endlessly build Citadel.

The bakers are really happy with their lives, but want an adventure.

Barney and Ambrose both vouch for the Carpenter's family. She's built things for them before. Nothing BAD has been happening to him, but nothing good really. Her marriage could be better though. She and her husband fight, a lot...and over small stuff that builds into personal attacks.

Widdy and the butcher know each other, they live on the same street and suffer the same smell problem. Also, people make nasty jokes and tease the man because of the smelly meats . The down side is that Widdy knows him because the butcher hates him. He's a massive speciest. Not too fond of you either, but anything to get away from the smell.

Ask the bakers if they are REALLY sure they want to go "adventuring", People going on this caravan will probably not be coming back to Citadel for a while.
>>
>>23850704
Mortician is clean.

Bricklayer is clean because he loathes Citadel's GROWTH.

Bakers are out because HAPPY and JUST WANT ADVENTURE STORIES.

Carpenter is clean because emotional turmoil and the strife of the real world has reached him, implicitly piercing the veil of Citadel's saccharine fantasy in so doing.

Butcher is clean because he's a bitter fuck.
>>
>>23850704
Leave the butcher out; we don't need that kind of bigotry along for this trip.

Leave the bakers home; Citadel seems to like them just fine and they're looking for an "adventure", which we're not out to offer.

The Carpenter gets in because Barney and Ambrose know her. The bricklayer sounds reasonable as well, and Stone Hall could really use him.

The mortician seems fine too.
>>

We shouldn't leave the butcher out just because he's a bit of an asshole. If we were willing to forgive Odette, then we have the tolerance to bring this guy along. Plus, he has a legitimate grievance against Citadel.

Plus, there's nothing REQUIRING him to stay in Stone Hall. Once we drop him off he's free to take a carriage to any other city.

>>23850752

Pretty much. Don't want an incident, even a minor one.

Also, Echo, what were the two groups that we didn't roll to take with?

Widdy and the butcher hate each other, he's a species-ist, and we're going to a city that the lizardfolk are going to be prominent in.

>>23850772
I don't know about other folks, but I was only willing to forgive Odette because Citadel ruined her and used her as its instrument, which makes it not *completely* her fault. She was still a terrible person, but forgivably so.

The butcher has no particular excuse, it doesn't look like Citadel hates him, and we'll have enough trouble on this trip without him. He can find his own way to wherever he wants to go.
>>
>>23850752
Okay, so you want to keep the Carpenter and her husband, the mortician, and the bricklayer, his pregnant wife, and his four other kids. (8, 11, 11, and 15.)

You'll charge 100 a head for the Carpenter and the Mortician, and you're putting a mild case of indenture servitude on the bricklayer with him giving you a share of his profits for a year, once he gets established at Stone Hall.
>>
>>23850788
(And I wouldn't have taken Odette on this trip, either, whether we forgave her or not.)

>>
>>23850831

Can the Mortician be Brisket Sweats and the Carpenter be Buff Drinklots? Also let's name the bricklayer Thick McRunfast.
>>
>>23850834

It's an adventure for a while, then it gets back into tedium. Plus they're probably plants.
>>
>>23850821
Charge the bricklayer 100 gold each for him and his wife, just like the rest (with the kids free), and tell him that he can offer 200 gold worth of service to the rebuilding of Stone Hall in lieu of payment. (Assuming that works out to be a reasonable amount of work; how many days of work would that be?)
>>
>>23850788
>>23850797
The butcher is suffering the exact same problems Widdy is. His store is in a terrible location and people constantly make fun of him for it.
>>

If it was just that he and Widdy didn't get along, I'd say fine, bring him; he's clean, and one set of personal problems would be OK. Bigotry is why he gets to stay home.

> An average farmer, selling an average crop would pull in 100 gp. Thanks to the Citadel Blessing, he never misses a month.

So, given that, about how much is 200gp worth of work from the bricklayer in rebuilding Stone Hall? A fraction of a year's work, right?
>>
>>23850887

Make sure the butcher knows that there are lizardpeople there, and give him a stern warning to be nice to them.
>>

>>
>>23850887
Remember, it's not just him, you get the wife and the two sons. The kids are okay, they haven't been QUITE marinated in the juices of hate yet, but the wife is a Grade A, PTA Queen, Sister-Better-Than-You, Alpha bitch. She's the one pushing for the butcher to go, while at the same time demanding that he 'do something' about Widdy. Though she's super sweet to your face.
>>
>>23850927
The bricklayers' wife is too busy taking care of her brood and being pregnant, (Don't worry, she's months away. You'll make it with time to spare. Presumably.) and the kids are standard eternal-sugar-rush kids. They run around, touch things they shouldn't, and fight with each other.

Yeah, between him and his wife, this seems like a Bad Idea. What good comes of taking him, other than a bit of gold we don't really need? There's a whole city worth of people here that need saving; we don't have to evacuate everyone bothered by Citadel *today*.

He does, but his family is big and expensive. His counter offer is that he pays you 100 for him and his wife, and he'll work at Stone Hall, and send you the remaining 100 when he's got it.

He's like Gregory. Proud as hell, and doesn't want to bow his head to anyone. He's not too ashamed about being in debt, anyway, being in debt to a Paladin doesn't just mean you owe them money, you also are leveraging your soul, really.

Yeah, with the current caravan of you, the Garishes, Barney, Ambrose, Widdy, the Quails, the Rawes, and Mr. Dunraven. It's going to take you about two weeks at least. Unless you want to try and take a shortcut off of the King's Road.
>>
>>23850943
Make it clear to them that while we'll make sure everyone stays safe, this is not a danger-free trip, and we don't need kids wandering off and needing saving. We really don't want to regret saying that kids ride for free.

Everyone drowns in dysentery.
>>
>>23851023
Oh, she's aware. She's kept these brats in line for a while. You think she's a hair too strict with them sometimes, but then again she IS pregnant.

So, everyone's still up in the air about the butcher.

>>23851042
It wasn't, but it was still a gun in the hands of a mage who can't control her powers. Not a good thing.

Barney claims that he destroyed the blueprints for the thing, because it scared him, but you have doubts. The man keeps plans for a hat and belt that stick to the wall that let you sleep upright.

He did take the gun back, he says there's no shot, powder, or wadding for it anyway. Again, you have doubts, but Barney's treating the thing like it could explode, so maybe it's best in his hands.
>>
>>23851078

About the butcher: What is our, as Ssen, 's best guess as to what will happen if we drop the butcher's family off in Stone Hall? Will they hurt anyone? Will they eventually get less bigoted?
>>
>>23851021
So, we have the five/six of us (Ssen, Tricia, Mage, Lea, and Mari/Peri), Gregory and Sophie Garish, Ambrose, Widdy, Harriet and Oliver Quail, Robert and Terri Rawe and four kids, and Dunraven.

Solid.

I personally think taking the butcher and the wife is a good idea. Precisely because they ARE racist assholes. They won't change. I know that type. However it will prove a counterpoint to the genuinely nice people that Citadel also persecutes. Once the Citadel dies it will be people like him populating it alongside the people who ARE genuinely nice and wish for a better future. We have to take the good and the bad together otherwise we are no better then Citadel looking to build a perfect society and rejecting the unwanted.
>>
>>23851142
It's way too late for those two, they'll be the same assholes there as they are here. They may cause some trouble too.

But getting to Stone Hall might cause their kids to escape the hate cycle.

Might.

>>23851165

When you get there, talk to their kids. Help set them on the right path. Also, warn Grams about the butcher's wife. That should cover it, and let them come.
>>
What we can do however is punish racism. Hate crimes and such should be treated just as severely as the serious crime it is. Furthermore we can teach their children that their parents are outright WRONG for holding those views. Show them that Lamia and Lizard folk and Elves are neat because they are different then them rather then disgusting and other and that will become acceptance.
>>
>>23851157
10/10 radaeth good point.

I think you're mixing long-term and short-term plans. Citadel and Stone Hall are huge cities; we're not staging a mass exodus today, we're just helping our friends get there, and some other folks who wanted along for the ride. We're not setting Stone Hall's immigration policy, here.

>>23851165
They'll be around when we're back in Citadel, too. And the wife's comment about wanting her husband to "'do something' about Widdy" goes beyond basic bigotry into actively doing hateful things. Leave them.

Seems we've come to a general consensus. Take them with for the sake of the kids, and just tolerate the parents. (Also keep an eye on the bitch.)

Is it too much to ask to not invite trouble along for the ride, here? A larger caravan is more trouble to keep safe, and we're already talking about (counting) seven wagons. That's already more wagons than we have members of our party.

Proposal: talk to Widdy and the three original travelers, here. Tell them the situation, and *ask* them if they want the butcher and his family along. They're the original customers, here.

Widdy says he doesn't want them.

Gregory doesn't want those two boys near Sophie. They've just hit puberty, and well...he's doing the big brother thing.

Barney says that he's had the kids over for a tour of his museum once, and that they're good at heart.

Ambrose says that the Caligo Clarus should offer help to those who ask for it, regardless of what kind of person they are.
>>
>>23851261
Good point, Echo. Although you brought this upon yourself by doing something so complex.

Bakers are clearly bad news, I'm feeling like no towards the Butcher...although we can risk it. I think risk is our natural state. Bricklayers could use a blessing, maybe that would help the wife (we should bless them all before the trip).

Just bring the butcher, and make it clear we won't stand for any of his bullshit during the trip.

As long as the butcher and wife are prudent enough to not let their hatred turn into major action en route to Stonehall, they shouldn't be a huge problem. We know they're racist bigots, they know they're racist bigots, and everyone on the caravan may already know that they're racist bigots. Their desire for a safe journey and a non-shitty life may be a strong motivator to not act out during the caravan ride.

That's not a problem. There's a little difference between normal Paladin confirmation, and the confirmation of a Caligo Clarus.

Most Paladins do their ceremony at dawn or noon, or anytime that the sun is up.

Your ceremony starts at dusk.

So lets assume that everything's set up for tomorrow, and the other families are making their final preparations, and the ones you want to come are coming.
>>
>>23851500

The confirmation doesn't take place inside the Cathedral, which you really are happy with, but at one of Citadel's many parks. Her Illuminated Self is standing there with a small lantern by the treeline, it's another replica of the First Lantern.

Julian is standing next to her in his full armor. He gleams.

The others are standing to the side, watching you and smiling. Pulling their clothes tight to avoid any chill. Tara's with them, giving you a big thumbs up.

"Because you know what kind of life we lead." Tricia sighs.

"Tonight, we gather here, among the cold, and among the woods." HIS begins. "We see the end of the Light for today...but we do not fear the night. Not this night, for in this time, we may have found among our number one who is willing to take up the lantern, to hold steady the Light, and ensure us all, that there is someone there among the Darkness.

"Who here will speak this one's name? Who here claims to know who this person is?"

"I will." Isen says. "I know her well, she is Ssen Patrick of River's Crossing. Daughter of Liam Patrick. I call her Paladin."

"And who are you, to make this claim?"

"I am Prince Itzak Solomon Elegante Newgate of Citadel." He pauses. "Also I speak for Isen the Audacious, Knight Errant of the Road." He grins.

HIS doesn't look amused.

"What deeds has Ssen Patrick done that convinces you so?"

"She is the Savior of Purple Sands, the Champion of First Wood, a Liberator of Stone Hall, and a Hero of Citadel. Where others flee, she charges, when others curse, she forgives, to the weak, she gives strength, and to the lost, she gives guidance, and forgiveness."

"Paladin Julian Graves." HIS says. "Do you see this person known as Ssen Patrick?"

"I do, your grace."

"What do you see before you, Paladin?"

"One of my own."

"Then come forward Ssen Patrick, and take up your duty." HIS holds out the lantern.

What's the formal form of address for Her Illuminated Self? The equivalent of "my liege" for royalty?

"I do." Keep it simple.

Is it bad that I imagine Isen as a blonde version of this man?

"I do."
Don't have to go all the way to the corners of the world to find the Lost, miss.

>Don't have to go all the way to the corners of the world to find the Lost, miss.
Definitely true, but think this, don't say it. Not the time to ad-lib yet.
>>
>>23851866
"I do."

"You vow to carry the burdens of others, by confession and deed, so that they may be able to reach His Light?"
>>
>>23851884
You know the answer.
>>
"I do."
>>
>>23851884
Tempted to add something here about also vowing to help people carry burdens, not just carrying them for them, but let's stick with "I do.".
>>
>>23851896

"I do."

"Your Father was the last Caligo Clarus on record...your path may be very lonely sometimes. Please recite the oath of your order."
>>
"For In The Darkness Is Where His Light Is Needed Most, Thus There In The Darkness I Must Stay."
>>
>>23851910
In brightest day, in blackest night...
>>
>>23851921
Funny, but let's not get cute here.

Recite the oath, with feeling.
>>
>>23851920
"For In The Darkness Is Where His Light Is Needed Most, Thus There In The Darkness I Must Stay."

"Then take this, and HIs Light be with you...Paladin Ssen Patrick."

She lets go of the lantern.

There's a moment. You feel someone's hand on your shoulder, squeezing it slightly. You turn, expecting to see Julian, but he's standing a little ways away...oh.

You smile and nod.

The lantern feels very heavy in your hand.

"Any words, Paladin?" Isen asks.
>>
>>23851952
"Thank you, Daddy."
>>
>>23851966
Try to at least say father.
>>
Was almost looking forward to being kicked out of the Citadel, just to were how this would happen without the order.
>>
>>23851966
Really?
>>
>>23851952
"My Father told me many tales of his time as a Paladin, and I have learned many more from researching the Caligo Clarus. In all those stories, he rarely traveled alone; he had many companions with him, among them Paladin Julian here. Likewise, without my friends here, I would not be alive today, nor could I have accomplished the tasks for which I have been recognized. This ceremony is not just for me. Thank you, Tricia, Mage, Mari, Peri, and Lea."
>>
>>23851973
Please, like we don't still call him Daddy in our heart. There is nothing so solemn as absolute honesty.
>>
damnit I didn't think of a speech at all.

Raise your lantern.
For my father. Who brought my out of the dark himself. For my friends who travel alongside me in the dark. For those who look to the light. And for those who await in the dark themselves hungry and cold and lost. I shall carry this lantern high. And for as long as I live I shall never put it down. This I swear. In the name of the Light.
>>
>>23851979
I was too, but everyone had to be so damn good at being awesome without going Chaotic. Anyway, the rebel Paladin...eh...too Lightbringer anyway.
>>
>>23851993
I like this, other than a bit too much literalism with the lantern. Put this at the end of the speech about friends above. Also, "vow" rather than "swear", keeping with the tone of the ceremony.
>>
>>23851966
Btw, kinda meant say this as a very private whisper.
>>
>>23851987
"My Father told me many tales of his time as a Paladin, and I have learned many more from researching the Caligo Clarus. Likewise, without my friends here, I would not be alive today, nor could I have accomplished the tasks for which I have been recognized. This ceremony is not just for me. You raise the lantern.

"For my father. Who brought me out of the Dark. For my friends who travel alongside me in the Dark. For those who look to the Light. And for those who await in the Dark themselves hungry, cold, and lost. I shall carry this lantern high that they may see it. And for as long as I live I shall never put it down. This I swear. In the name of the Light."

Your friends all bow their heads in solidarity. Tara's actually tearing up. Isen's nodding his head, impressed. Somehow, you just know he's working on how to steal that speech from you.

Julian steps forward, with the record book. It's open to the blank page that's next to Father's. He hands you a quill.

"He would be proud. I know I am." He says.
>>
>>23852026
While signing it, "Does the book record Paladins only, or all those who stood with the Caligo Clarus?" If the latter, "Then I would ask my friends to sign, as well." And offer the pen to Tricia.
>>
>>23852026
>>23852045
You don't need to be a Paladin to be part of the Occuli.
>>
>>23852026
>>23852045
Mari and Peri can sign twice, both on the same line. And when all the members of our party have signed:
"Prince Itzak, could you sign in the name of our absent friend, Isen?"
>>
>>23852045
"Does the book record Paladins only, or all those who stood with the Caligo Clarus?"

Julian clears his throat. "It is done in this record, even though a tad unconvential."

"Then I would ask my friends to sign, as well." You offer the pen to Tricia.

Tricia signs, and passes it on. It goes to all of them, and Peri/Mari sign twice, Lea finishes it with her signature in Sands Script, looking very elegant, and gives it back to you. You see Tara and Isen standing there, both of them trying not to look TOO pleading.
>>
>>23852068
You hand it to Tara who scrawls her own name.

"Prince Itzak, could you sign in the name of our absent friend, Isen?" You say with a smile.

Isen's eyes narrow, and then he nods and takes the pen. His signature takes up two spaces and goes across the entire page.
>>
>>23852068
But we haven't travelled with them. They're not in the party. Yet.
>>
Have them sign as well. They may travel apart some of the time but they are true companions who serve the light from within the darkness as well.

Though do tease Isen and Tara that they're stuck with you now.
>>
>>23852081
I just *knew* he was going to pull a John Hancock.

Typical. Give him a quick "Seriously?" look.
>>
>>23852081
"An audacious signature indeed. I'd expect nothing less from the author of the Contract of Stone Hall." Say it so he can *hear* the capital letters.
>>
>>23852068
"Julian, you have signed this book once, as a companion of my father. I would ask you to sign it again, as one of mine."
>>
>>23852111
that's a bit too much, I think. He's his own paladin.
>>
>>23852111
Now he's really not one of our companions.
>>
>>23852111
I doubt he'll be able to travel with us as the Red Occulli have their own duties.
>>
>>23852121
Who said he wasn't? But he has nonetheless helped us greatly. Consider his acts at Stone Hall, for one. And I'm also thinking that this would be a good thing for him to have done later on.
>>
>>23852127
He was a Red Occuli when he signed next to Paladin Liam Patrick, as well, and they didn't travel everywhere together either.
>>
>>23852081
Her Illuminated Self steps back forward as Julian and the others step back. She gently takes your Medallion from around your neck, and then sets it in the middle of the small silver plate that hangs from a glittering chain. "You may remove it, or reset this as you will." She says as she places the mantle around your neck. "As of now, you may now use the title of Paladin, and all that it represents. You may use the Patrick family crest. You may own land, and you may speak at the Open Council. You may take confession, give absolution, marry, and speak prayer for the dead. Your word is that of one of the highest authorities...remember that this is one of the heaviest things that you will ever wear." She says.

She then places a circlet around your head. "I apologize, we lacked a little for this. I was forced to take the crystal that was in your father's helm of office that he returned to us when he retired. I set it within this." It's a silver circlet, with a single sphere in the center, a clear glass prism with a nearly countless number of facets. "This is what you are now, Ssen Patrick. You now represent something greater than yourself, and are part of something far grander. Blessings upon you," She smiles. "Paladin Serpent."

"I cannot think of a circlet I would be prouder to wear; I appreciate having something of his to carry with me into the darkness."

She nods. "I will leave you and your friends to your meditations." She leaves with Julian.

The silence of the park lasts for about eight minutes.

"Party time!" Isen says. "Come on, I know a place where they carve glasses out of ice! First drinks are on the Paladin Serpent!"

>"Party time!" Isen says. "Come on, I know a place where they carve glasses out of ice! First drinks are on the Paladin Serpent!"

What kind of a bard are you, Isen, that you and your party have to *pay* for drinks?
>>
Before we follow Isen, talk to him: "We're less than 24 hours from leaving Citadel for Stone Hall, and I can't say I'm greatly in the mood for surprises right now. You mentioned a second bit of good news?"
>>
>>23852216
When the morning light hits you, you realize a few things.

One, you're back up in the Caligo Clarus attic.

Two, you're in your nest, and the only thing you have on is your mantle and circlet.

Three, Tricia is in the nest with you, you're both curled up around each other like usual, and she's only got her hat on.

Thankfully, someone put a blanket over Father's statue.

Your head also is pounding.

The last thing you remember is drinking this blue thing with Tara.
>>

> "Party time!" Isen says. "Come on, I know a place where they carve glasses out of ice! First drinks are on the Paladin Serpent!"

This suggests a new twist on the old story of getting drunk and waking up in the morning having married someone.

>>23852289
You and Tricia gather up your clothes and tidy up the attic, you give father a kiss goodbye, and make your way down and out from the Cathedral.

You walk towards the caravan. Mage joins up with you. He's adjusting his robes and has a black eye.

"Hey, you two okay?" He asks.

Tricia stops looking at the ground and being red, and her eyes go wide. "Oh, right...that." She bursts into giggles.

"What happened?" You ask. "What's with the shiner, did Tara want to cuddle again? Who did I try to give the 'I do's to?

Mage chuckles. "You and Tara were astoundingly drunk and, as always, trying to fight each other. You kind of failed and collapsed into each other. Isen made a joke, and you said that he couldn't make those kind of jokes to you any more, since you were a Paladin."

Mage waves at the others waiting at the caravan. They also look a little scuffed up. Lea has the lantern you got from HIS in the wagon.

"You threatened to chop off Isen's cock." Mage continues. "And Isen said something about how he could bring a woman to his knees with only a fraction of an inch. To which you said that he was being generous about his equipment." He sighed. "Isen laughed it off, which only made you madder. Then you said that you'd do the worst thing you could to him, stick him with one woman forever."

Tricia laughs "I remember! You said you were going to marry him to Tara right then and there. Tara was all for it, she lunged at Isen and..."

"And things kind of went insane for a moment. Every one was fighting the girls were trying to hold his Audaciousness down, you were standing on a table reciting the matrimony rite, out of order and VERY slurred, and the rest of the bar devolved into a fight as well." Mage says.

"Then," Peri finishes the tale. "When we're all on the ground, laughing, and smarting, you scoop Tricia up, and claim that the two of you needed time for an intimate confession...and you slid off. We've been looking for you. Where'd you find them Mage?"

"Coming out of the Cathedral." He says.

"Isen can really dodge if he tries." Lea chuckles. "Tara took it in all good fun. Still, we should probably not act as foolish as that again for a while."
>>
You are probably right. Serious Paladin Face.

>>23852419
"OK, that could have been much worse. I think I'll be adding drinking to sleeping in on my list of things that seem to lead to trouble. But you forgot the biggest travesty of the evening: whatever Tricia and I did, I'd like to remember it next time."

The two of you kiss. The others smile and go back to getting ready to leave.

Your moment with Tricia is interrupted by the arrival of Isen and Tara.

Isen's back in his usual Royal Blue and Gold armor. Tara's now dressed in her armor, but now she's got on a royal blue and gold tabard and royal blue gloves.

They're sitting at the head of one of the most hideously extravagant carriages that you've ever seen in your life.

"Don't you dare!" Isen snaps as he approaches, pointing at you. "I will turn this thing right around and order you all be made anathema! Got it?"
>>
>>23852527
"I'm sorry for being a buffoon last night; apparently I'm a rather creative drunk. The offer of marriage still stands, but only if and when you and Tara both want it."

"I'm sorry for being a buffoon last night; apparently I'm a rather creative drunk. The offer of marriage still stands, but only if and when you and Tara both want it."

Isen shudders at the very idea of singular matrimony. You find it odd that Isen the Audacious, of all people, would feel that being married would mean that he'd have to stick to one person. Apparently he takes those vows seriously. Once more, that very very thin shred of dignity and royal nobility you see every so often shows, and then is hidden by the rest of the jackass that he is.

"So, this is the caravan to Stone Hall!" He waves to the other members, who are more than a little shocked to see two more people, and the fanciest thing on wheels. "Hello good people! The three of us will be joining you on this little trip."

Tara waves.

"Three?"

"Royal footman?" Isen asks Tara. Tara salutes and gets down and opens the door to the carriage, gently she picks up the person inside and carries her outside.

She had to, the girl's feet have apparently been bound. They're no bigger than a toddler's. She's in one of those feather covered dresses and the usual white make-up. She nods her head at everyone.

"Ladies and Gentlemen, her high royal highness, here to see our great kingdom. I give you Princess Mumei of the Phoenix Kingdom!" There's a little bit of applause and some bowing.

The princess says something in the Phoenix tongue.

"She's had enough sun," Isen says to Tara. "Put her back inside."

Tara puts the princess back and closes the door.

Isen looks at you and shrugs. "It was the only way I could get out of here. I figured it might be good for her too, you know." He pauses as he looks at your faces. "Hey, I at least learned her name!"

"Oh, no, I'm not worrying about that. Well, now I am. Do we have anyone here who even speaks her language?"

Isen raises his hand. "That would be me."

Of course it would. This is going to be a long two weeks, plus. Well...sooner this starts the sooner this is over.

You and Lea walk out in front of the Caravan.

"Paladin Ssen will now lead us in prayer and bless us for a swift and safe journey." Lea says.

The group masses up together, and bows their heads.

>>23852671
She's able to stand a little and do a little dancing for very brief periods of time, but mostly she just sits and looks pretty.
>>
>>23852677
And an addition:
"May we understand each other clearly, and stand strong against the Darkness."
>>
>>23852683
>inb4 written in her language as well
>>
>>23852706
"May the Light guide and guard us all on our Journey."
>>
>>23852677
>>23852706
This sounds pretty good.

We should have lea start playing some light travelling music once we're out of earshot of the citadel.
>>
>>23852703
Linking the post for response:
>>23852677
>>23852706
>>23852717
These three, in order.
>>
When we go to actually leave, we should figure out who we're putting where. Let's get Isen and Tara and the princess to the middle of the caravan, where we can protect them best. Bad Things would happen if anything happened to the princess. We should put party members towards the back, front, and sides of the caravan. And let's keep the butcher and Widdy far away from each other.
>>
At the end, quietly, where nobody else other than our party can hear, add the prayer we used against Citadel before: "May the Light blind the eyes of malice, and may its ears hear only his Teachings." "Let us have a safe departure."
>>
>>23852677
"May His Light protect and guide our travels. We leave for Stone Hall in peace; may we travel in peace, and arrive in peace." You say, hoping that Peace is still with the Lightbringers...you slip in a brief prayer for those two poor souls. "And may His Light guide these people traveling to begin a new life in a new city, that they may take the best of their old lives with them and leave the rest behind. May we understand each other clearly, and stand strong against the Darkness. May the Light guide and guard us all on our journey."

"Amen." Lea says.

"Amen." The group choruses.

And with that, the animals are started and the wagons begin to roll. Lea takes out her lute, and begins to play.

Finally, after what seems like far far FAR too long, you leave Citadel behind you, and the Thing of Sparks and Shadows with it.

The first day is of course, fine. You're just walking through the grain fields, spirits are high, the kids scamper around, and everyone's filled with excitement and good cheer.

Isen walks up next to you. "So, if you get a chance, her majesty wants to talk to you. I'll translate. She's got a lot of questions."
>>
>>23852761
before we talk to her get that damn letter translated or read it if it already is.
>>
>>23852761
Nod calmly and agree to do it when we stop for the day.

When he's out of eyesight quickly pull out that letter and read it.
>>
>>23852761
"Certainly." Follow him back to their carriage.
>>
>>23852777
>>23852779
We don't need to wait for the end of the day, but definitely read the letter first, and get Isen's help translating it if necessary.
>>
>>23852790
If we still have her letter, have Isen translate it for us. Then speak with her.
>>
Ah, found it:
http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/23809094/#p23810588
> "Oh, uhh...here." She hands you a piece of paper that's folded into the shape of a strange looking bird. "That's a thank you from Princess Yadda-Yadda from the Phoenix Empire...I think...she doesn't speak Citadel."

Good catch, redaeth!
>>
>>23852777
You unfold the folded piece of paper, there's a lot of Phoenix Empire script. You have no idea what it says.

"Sure, when we make our first stop." You say.

"Okay, she just wants to know what you are, what's a paladin, and how much she has to tithe to you so you don't eat her first born child." He says.
>>
>>23852805
"Oh, that's going to be a *fun* conversation. Hey Isen, could you help me read this? It's a letter from the Princess, and I've been having so much *fun* lately that I haven't had time to read it. I'd like to do so before talking to her."
>>
Hey.

Hey guys.

Hey.

WE'RE A PALADIN NOW!
>>
>>23852805
"Isen, can you by any chance read this language?"

"And I'd consider eating her firstborn, if only to prevent it being raised by you. (joking, of course)"
>>
>>23852805
"Well, before we get to those pressing and essential questions, can you help me read this letter she sent? I never did get it translated, and it would be rude to have not read it."
>>
>>23852805
Let's have that conversation very carefully; it sounds to me like she might really just need more information here, since as a Princess she'd have almost no exposure to Lamias other than in stories, and she probably wouldn't even encounter the people bringing them around as "pets". So we've got an opportunity here to give her the truth.
>>
We should take this opportunity to ask about the Phoenix Empire from Isen and this princess

ircc all we know is

>The only other known Continent is across the ocean from Citadel. The Phoenix Empire. The only thing you know about it is that it's there, and Isen has to marry a princess from it.
>>
>>23852823
Funny, but don't even joke about this, at least not yet.
>>
>>23852841
We should ask her what lamias do in her home country to give her such frightful beliefs.
>>
If, for some reason, Isen doesn't actually read the language, then I think we could approach the princess with Isen and the letter in tow, telling her that we appreciate her correspondence but we have not yet had a chance to translate the letter, and asking her if she'd be so kind as to tell us through Isen what it says.
>>
>>23852816
I keep having that thought every 5 minutes, too. Feels so *satisfying*.
>>
>>23852815
"Oh, that's going to be a *fun* conversation. Hey Isen, could you help me read this? It's a letter from the Princess, and I've been having so much *fun* lately that I haven't had time to read it. I'd like to do so before talking to her." You say.

"Okay, lemme see...uhh...okay, that means thank you, that means 'Dancing Man of the Great Heron and Loon' this is 'Serpent Queen' and...okay..." He frowns. "Thank you Serpent Queen, your actions continued the dancing of the Great Loon whom I soar under wing. I hear the Egg Taker in my rustling, and my down shivers. Does your eggs become food, or are you without fear for your never wings are not his to pluck. Thank you again, Serpent Queen. You confuse my flight."

He shakes his head. "Okay, I hope that made sense to you."
>>
>>23852865
Give him a hard look. "Isen, just how much time have you taken learning her language? Because the last thing I want to do is have a serious conversation with the princess that's going to come out like that letter just did."
>>
>>23852865
Huh, it seems like she's at least vaguely aware of Citadel's true nature.
>>
>>23852865
"Enough sense to give me questions to ask of my own. I wonder how much of that was theology, and how much was farming.
>>
>>23852865
A lot of symbolism there. I believe the Egg Taker is death. The Loon is Isen. She alludes to her that she is the Heron. Her people must associate with birds very strongly.
>>
>>23852893
Well, it is the Phoenix Empire. Perhaps some of these are colloquialisms that Isen is translating literally.
>>
>>23852879
"Isen, just how much time have you taken learning her language? Because the last thing I want to do is have a serious conversation with the princess that's going to come out like that letter just did."

"I can't help it, it's not a word to word translation. They talk in this strange way of bird metaphors and lots of things about feathers and sky and apparently the word that means 'soar' has eighteen different meanings." Isen shrugs. "I'm glad I can tell when she needs to go the bathroom!"
>>
>>23852900
most likely

>>23852909
gods Isen. Maybe Mage knows a translation spell.
>>
>>23852865
Other than the "You confuse my flight" at the end, I can see how that could be interpreted as deeply symbolic, but I could also see how it could be interpreted as Isen pulling a "my hovercraft is full of eels". Let's find out which.
>>
>>23852865
>>23852909
Mentally prepare for an intense and confusing game of pictionary.
>>
>>23852915
Mage shrugs. "Maybe...but do you really want me doing magic on your tongue or ears? Cause I think I know something that's like that...but it's kinda sorta Ghoul magic, and you'll need to eat some of her hair."
>>
>>23852915
Not a bad thought; let's ask him.

>>23852909
OK, let's go ahead and have the conversation with the Princess the next time we stop. We should start out explicitly saying that because we're speaking two different languages, she should stop us if we say anything that sounds strange, shocking, or even slightly unclear, because it might simply be an error or translation. We'll promise to do the same, and we hope to avoid any misunderstandings.
>>
>>23852933
How bad will any side effects be?
>>
>>23852933
Yeah.... lets keep the Ghoul magic to a minimum.
>>
>>23852933
"I could live with that, if you think it's reliable." We can ask Isen for one of her hairs; Isen said she'd do anything, and proved it by asking her to spin around and cluck.
>>
>>23852933
eating hair isn't that bad... but will she take it well?
>>
>>23852933
I think we should go for the translation spell, but still have Isen around for translation: hearing the results of both lets us hopefully infer more than we'd get from just one.
>>
>>23852933
>>23852940
>>23852939
no ghoul magic, it could have gotten us in big trouble before, and NOW we are an actual Paladin.
>>
(honestly Im of the opinion that ghoul magic isn't that bad as long as you don't feast on the flesh of sentients. Its more shamnism then anything else then)
>>
>>23852933
>>23852944
Let's lay off the ghoul magic. We can just deal with having to play a bit of purple monkey dishwasher.

"On second thought, no thanks mage. I'll try to do this the Isen way."

Try not to laugh.
>>
>>23852949
Clarification: I think we should go for the spell on our ears to translate what she says and what Isen says. Let's not try to speak Phoenix Empire tongue directly.
>>
>>23852942
"I could live with that, if you think it's reliable."

"Ssen, I'd be making it up as I go along." Mage says. "If you wanted me to be sure, you'd just eat her tongue. THAT I could work with, easy, but I doubt it's the best option." He sighs. "I don't know about side effects though...exactly how fond are you of what hair you have left?"
>>
>>23852951
Agreed. I don't see how this would be considered blasphemous or against any rule of being a Paladin; it isn't even blood, and the Teachings don't say anything against magic in general.
>>
>>23852958
"I don't really care one way or the other. I don't really think that white's really my color, you know?"
>>
>>23852958
"Ah. I'm not too worried about the side effects, but I think I'd prefer to try something that's been tested before. Let's leave experimental spell creation for a less critical time. I'll muddle through with Isen's...help."
>>
>>23852966
do you really want to risk a miscast on an untested ghoul magic spell though?
>>
>>23852958
no tongue eating for me. As for my hair, what is another change? I'm not too attached to the colour white myself.
>>
>>23852979
We could test it on Isen.
>>
>>23852958
Yeah, there's no reason to risk untested magic on such a relatively trivial matter.
>>
>>23852984
hah
>>
>>23852958
(I'm finding myself wondering if an ear hair would work better for the spell to hear their language. His Light above, why am I wondering that?)
>>
>>23852951
I would have to agree.

>>23852958
"There are worse things that I could have to deal with. But you have a point, I'll try to get by without it. I would appreciate if you'd try to get it figured out in the mean time though."
>>
>>23852984
thats even worse!

untested ghoul magic on a Prince! and the only one that can speak to the princess!
>>
>that feel when you kinda like white hair but nobody else in the thread seems to
>>
>>23852984
Isen is the backup plan, though; we don't want to mess with his own ability to translate.
>>
then if we are going to be dealing with the pheonix empire in the future we're going to have to do this the hard way.

Isen since we have a bit of time... would you teach me her language? Not now but later
>>

>>
>>23852992
This. "It might come in handy in the future. Perhaps you could see if anyone else in the party or caravan speaks another language, and experiment on it with them. Best to try it for the first time with someone who also speaks our language, so we can evaluate any mistranslations."
>>
>>23853011
this is a far better plan

>>23853014
internet, tone, 5am etc.
>>
>>23852958
We're not going to eat any part of the princess.
>>
>>23852992
"There are worse things that I could have to deal with. But you have a point, I'll try to get by without it. I would appreciate if you'd try to get it figured out in the mean time though." You say.

"Got it." He salutes. "The good news is that Isen and the Princess' presence has shut up the Swings. They're trying to figure out how to cosy up to them. But Isen's well...Isen, and who knows about the Princess." He shrugs. "Do you think I should ask Sophie out on a date? I mean...when we get to Stone Hall. I think if I ask her now Gregory might stab me in the eye with a needle."
>>
>>23853038
I think that would be a good idea Mage.
>>
>>23853038
"You'll never know until you try."
>>
>>23853038
"I'd worry more about Sophie herself. She was so bothered by that voice in the back of her head that wanted a romance. Once you both get to Stone Hall, and out from under that influence, start getting to know her a bit better and see where it goes."
>>
>>23853038
>The good news is that Isen and the Princess' presence has shut up the Swings. They're trying to figure out how to cosy up to them.

This is worrying, and not necessarily good news. Bigotry and xenophobia go hand in hand; do they really want to cosy up, or does the wife want to attack the princess?

"Yeah." He sighs.

"But you never know until you try."

He smiles. "Hey, Ssen...one last thing. Remember at the dance, we just made up a last name for me? I...have an idea for one, but I need you to say that it's okay." He sighs. "I mean, you've been here for me since the start, and I know you and Tricia, I'm the little brother of the group, and now there's Sophie and..." He groans. Citadel Kingdom is about as big as North America, give or take. North is uncharted tundra which gives to Arctic, south is predominantly desert and savannah, Purple Sands is the southern most town. River's Crossing is closer to White Tree but is closer to Stone Hall than Citadel.

Wait, we crossed the distance from Stone hall to Grand Ciotadel -one shore to the other- in what, week? Two weeks?

It would take months to cross a continent the size of North America by horse.

>>
>>23853343
You could always put the scale in terms of travel weeks.

If we know that it takes two weeks travel to get from Stone Hall to Citadel...

From there you simply need to work out the distance you can travel in a week.

Medallion melt guy here, by that time frame, then, I'll be 2-4 hours late to the thread because work. I've been staying up to 5am every night to follow this thread and now i have to bag fucking groceries and miss part of it.

Buttfrustrated

Since I won't be here, casting my word now.

Mumei is an ambassador of sorts and may well be the first source of information her nation gets about Lamiae. Let's take a very sweet, exceedingly patient tone when we speak with her (the importance of tone and body language is magnified when she can't directly hear our words.) and begin by asking her to tell us anything she knows/thinks about Ssen. Once we patiently gather a good picture of all her misconceptions, then we'll educate her completely.

Because innocent ignorance is both one of the most dread manners of darkness in the world, as well as one of the easiest to rectify.
