You wake up early as usual, huddled in the corner of the abandoned building you claim as home. The sun has yet to rise and your mouth aches something fierce already.

You're hungry, but you haven't stopped being hungry since you left Colcliv and so you've partially learned to ignore the dull, hollow ache in your belly.

You readjust your scarf to ensure it's secure over your face and set out for your day.

Your name is Clovis, you turned fourteen yesterday, and you expect to die any day now.

What would you like to do?

You head into town. Not many people are out at this time of day. That's okay with you. You're not very good with people. Being around them makes your chest tight and it gets hard to breathe.

You have to walk a bit to get out of the slums and the blank slate of the undeveloped district beside it. The whole town lays ahead of you.

[x]Church

You have lived in Rawling for three months now and have never been to the church. You quietly slip through the town, trying to avoid open spaces as much as possible until you reach the building. It's one of the only stone buildings in town, so it's easy to find. On the door is emblazoned a vermilion flame within a circle.

You open the door a crack and peek inside.

"Hello, child," says a soft voice behind you.

You find yourself frozen in place at the sudden shock. After a few short moments, you untense yourself and glance over your shoulder to see a tall woman woman wearing long robes with the trim the same vermilion as the door. An elaborate golden necklace encircles her throat.

"Are you seeking guidance?"

"Foohhd," you rasp out from behind your scarf. It's been so long since you've heard your own voice.

"Certainly. We would be more than happy to accommodate you. You may call me Sister Varya."

She leads you into the church and invites you to sit down on a brightly colored rug. She goes to fetch some food.

Hopefully you'll get more out of this visit than that. Namely, that necklace. Somehow. You haven't quite figured out the details.

Varya returns with a small loaf of bread and a mug of camel milk and sits before you.

"Is there anything else I may help you with?"

"Church?"

Varya brightens at your interest. "Do you know the story of the Wyrmslayer?"

You stare at her blankly.

"I suppose I'll start at the beginning and give you an abbreviated version. The Wyrmslayer, as all of the first people were, came from the earth's greenery after Devorah breathed life into a mighty tree. The Wyrmslayer was a proud woman in Devorah's image and initially pursued the sciences. She developed medicines, windmills, and many more wonders. But Fannar, goddess of disease and all other wicked things, was jealous of the humans that Devorah had created and from the clouds shaped a massive winged Wyrm that terrorized the humans. Devorah bestowed the knowledge of weaponry and war onto the Wyrmslayer and made her her champion. The battle took four days, uninterrupted, but the Wyrmslayer prevailed." Varya can't control her smile. "Though that tale's not particularly representative of our order as a whole, it's still my favorite."

You nod slightly and thank her softly for her charity.

"As servants of Devorah, we continue to study the sciences, though not those of war. My personal area of expertise is architecture. You're a bit young to become a clergywoman, but you are more than welcome to come by and learn whenever you wish. Educated people are more prosperous and pleasing to Devorah."

You still haven't figured out how you're going to steal the necklace.

[x]Leave with food

You gather up the meal and begin making your way towards the door.

"You're welcome to bring back the cup whenever you wish. I hope it will be soon."

You leave and go squat in a nearby alleyway to eat. You can't eat the bread as it is now, so you soak it in the milk and wait for it to turn into a soggy mush. You double-check to be sure no one is around, then pull down your scarf and begin spooning the bread paste into the side of your mouth, maneuvering past your overgrown molars which keep it perpetually propped open. Your incisors, which have grown far past your lip and now curl into your chin, tug irritatingly at your jaw as you try to fit as much in your mouth as you can. Chewing has long been lost to you, so you swallow the chunks whole and repeat until the entirety of the mush is gone.

You feel somewhat better. It's the best meal you've had in ages.

Where would you like to go from here?

Port won.

[x]Trade yard and port

You begin to head towards the river and arrive at the port as the sun begins to rise. Some adventurous merchants have a few small stalls set up along the river to snag the business of incoming sailors and you can see a boat approaching port already.

There are a few unattended crates laying about as well as a large building where shipments that must go over land from Rawling are temporarily stored until one of the town's delivery services take them.

The river itself is cold and clean, stemming from the mountains to the far west. Many reeds grow along its banks and you can see a man sitting among them.

You creep towards the stack of crates to see if there's anything valuable in them. Unfortunately, almost of them are nailed tightly shut and you have neither the strength or the tools to open them. One crate, which appears to have already been unpacked, yields only a pocket-sized owl totem carved from some dark, reddish wood, seemingly forgotten by the gents who unloaded it.

You think about hitting him in the head with the owl, but he's a lot bigger than you and if he survived whatever mauled his face, you doubt you'll do much damage.

"Shorry!" you apologize quickly and dart off, adrenaline surging.

You can hear him thundering behind you and you can feel your energy waning fast. You try to force yourself faster, but your legs only scream at you and you find yourself staggering. The man grabs you by your arms and yanks you backwards. Your heart feels like it's about to explode and you collapse to the ground in a shaking heap.

"Shorry..." you half-sob.

"I've dealt with my fair share of thieves. They're all sorry when they get caught. I'd turn you over to the guards, but they're next to useless."

The man releases one of your arms and lets you remove the owl from your pocket. You drop it into his outstretched hand.

"Wha ish ith?"

"One of my goods. I own a curio shop near the labor round. You're free to come by and purchase it when you have proper money." He releases you. "Go on, get out of here."

You wander away, deprived of the red owl.

The city is beginning to stir. You think there's enough time to visit one more place before the streets get flooded by people and you have to retreat to your home.

You don't think anyone saw you, but you thought the same about the owl, so you hurry out of the square with your delicious prize.

Maybe you can survive here, if unscrupulously. Maybe you won't starve to death. You smile to yourself a little behind your scarf.

You drop off the cup on the church steps. You think you see Sister Varya through the window, but don't stick around long enough to be sure.

You go back home, a crumbling mudbrick structure that was abandoned before you arrived in Rawling. You curl up in a cool corner and close your eyes, ready to rest.

You have a life to build, even though you know any chance of really having one of those disappeared when you got magic.

You have to tear it all into tiny pieces to eat, but it's still very tasty even cold.

[x]Magic?

You don't like thinking about magic much. Nothing good ever comes from it. Getting magic only leads to death or something worse than that. You figured out that much the first time you ever saw someone get magic in Colcliv. It was a little after you had been brought there, maybe a month or two. A boy around ten burst into flames in the middle of dinner and left behind nothing but a pile of ash. He wasn't the only one to get magic either.

Stephan melted, Mariead just vanished, Jan turned himself inside out and couldn't fix it, Oralee was sold to nobility since she couldn't object, and Felix, after they realized he wouldn't ever be a human again, got sold to a farmer you think.

Had you stayed in Colcliv, you might have been considered lucky. You didn't get the quick death. You got starvation and mouth pain that never quit.

When you got magic, you weren't lucky. No matter how mild it was.

You decide to go out, to get your mind off such things.

"--our relationship!" The speaker was a red-faced woman making violent flourishes towards a man who looked very much like he didn't wish to be here.

"Well, maybe you should keep your husband on a better leash," retorts a woman sitting at a table with a mug of beer. There's a sword on one hip and a hatchet on the other.

The red-faced wife lunges forward with an incoherent cry of rage and slaps the swordswoman. The swordswoman laughs and retaliates with a punch that knocks the wife off her feet. Her skirts fly every which-way and her husband desperately fumbles to lift her unconscious body from the floor. The swordswoman boots him in the arse and laughs again.

"You don't regret it, even if you think you do. Your wife'll never measure up to me."

The owner has had enough and demands that the swordswoman leave. She shrugs, downs the rest of her beer in a single go, and obliges. You duck out behind her as quietly as possible.
