After packing up your things from dinner, you set off down the tunnel deeper into the cavern. A short distance down from the roasted remains of the goblin that fell victim to the twins' trap, you find the remains of the trap itself -- a rather ingenious contraption consisting of a makeshift bell rigged up from some pieces of the twins' mess kits, along with (judging by the pottery shards littering the floor and the state the goblin was in when you encountered it) a flask of alchemical fire rigged to drop on whatever unfortunate soul tripped it. You pause for a bit to allow the twins to reclaim their pot and spoon from the trap's workings, then continue onward.

The tunnel winds in a generally downward slope for quite some time, sometimes narrowing for a stretch but generally large enough for you to walk quite comfortably. After a time -- roughly a bit over a quarter hour, you reckon -- you spy what looks to be the opening to the juncture room Yukiho said she found with her spell. Holding up your hand to signal a halt, you listen carefully for any signs of goblins in the room.

Sounds to be clear, best you can tell.

>What do you do?
>>
Send Yukiho in first to investigate.
Let's raise her confidence levels by giving her some RESPONSIBILITY and to show that we trust her.

Also, she'll die first if anything goes wrong.

>>

Can we roll for a Spot Check?

I'd specifically send the twins to scout.
>>
Tonight's "magic number" is 7. When I need a die roll (generally 1d20, though I may ask for several rolls at once to check multiple things that are going on), the 7th post making the appropriate roll is the one whose result I'll use.

Also, in case anyone forgot or is new to the quest, you guys do get one reroll per session. If you really aren't happy with the result for a roll, you can propose a reroll, in which case everyone else shoudl respond to the post wanting the reroll with their vote for or against. Once it looks like everyone's voted, I'll tally the results and if the majority is in favor of the reroll, I'll make the reroll myself. Results of the reroll are final, even if they're worse than the original.
>>
>>24078679

>Woohoo it's back!

Send the twins.

Quick recon only. No heroics. Shout if them need help.
>>
>>24078679
You beckon Ami and Mami closer and in a quiet whisper instruct them to scout out the room ahead.

"Scouting ONLY," you hiss. "Any sign of trouble, you call us."

Acknowledging your order with a smart nod, the two creep ahead to the opening. After carefully peering about from the relative safety of the tunnel, they step inside. As they split off to the sides of the room, you lose them from your view.

>Roll, please.

After a few moments, you see Mami pop back into view in the opening to the tunnel. Smiling and waving, she calls down to you, "All clear, Nii-chan!"

No sooner do the words leave her mouth than an indistinct, dark-colored form darts down from the ceiling behind her. It's moving too fast to make out clearly, but you do see some manner of glistening appendage wrap around the girl's waist. Shrieking in alarm, Mami is yanked abruptly to the roof of the chamber, leaving only her lower legs visible, dangling in front of the tunnel opening. You see them flailing about futilely as she struggles against her unseen assailant, her muffled cries echoing down the tunnel.

You charge ahead, barking orders. "Ami, grab her! Haruka, light!"

A moment later, as you see Ami leap up to catch hold of her sister's legs, you faintly hear Yukiho say, "But...the roof in there should be so high...I think..."

A split second later, you emerge into the chamber to find that she is in, fact, right. Peering upward, you find the roof to be only a foot or two higher than that of the tunnel, with Mami apparently embedded in it from her thighs up.

Ami, hanging in midair clinging to the disembodied legs of her sister, turns her head to look at you with a grin and a wink, then the both of them vanish in a burst of colorful sparkles. A feeble, tinny fanfare echoes over the snickering of two young, female voices just behind you on either side.

You turn to find the twins -- the real ones, presumably -- laughing impishly at you.

"Nfufu~"

"Totally fooled! What a sucker!"

Scowling furiously, you deliver each of them a sharp rap on the forehead with the flat of your blade.

"You idiots! There's a time and place for joking around, and this is most certainly not one of them. We are in a DUNGEON filled with DANGEROUS MONSTERS, get it? You don't joke about stuff like that when it could actually happen at any moment.
Looks like you two just lost half your pay for this quest. Congratulations."

Sheathing your sword and pointedly ignoring the twins' protestations, you turn to take a look around the chamber. As Yukiho had mentioned when she used her scanning spell earlier, it's roughly the same size as the one you'd stopped in previously for your dinner. Other than the one you just came from, there are three tunnels leading out of the chamber -- one to the left as you stand by the tunnel you came from, the others more toward the right.

"Yukiho, which way do we go to get to that odd room you found earlier?"

"Um, I think it was one of these," she says, gesturing at the tunnels to the right, "but I-I'm not sure which one. There were a lot of twists and branches and I don't remember the details too clearly. I could take another look, b-but I'll probably just forget again, and I'm not sure how long my mana will last if I keep doing that.."

>[ ] Have Yukiho do another scan to figure out the route
>[ ] Take your chances with the rightmost tunnel
>[ ] Take your chances with the middle tunnel
>[ ] Try the leftmost tunnel, maybe Yukiho's mistaken
>>
>>24080073
No wait, take that back...go the rightmost tunnel. We can't have her use up all her mana.
>>
>>24080049
On one hand, getting it right the first time will be helpful. On the other hand, that's extra mana that might be needed much later.

Go with the rightmost tunnel.
>>
>>24080049
>[x] Take your chances with the rightmost tunnel

Scanning a complex network seems straining. Let's trust Yukiho for once, and save our mana for something pressing.

Worst comes to worst, we'll bash our way out of trouble.
>>
>>24080049
[x] Take your chances with the rightmost tunnel
And make a comment about her being to hard on herself.
>>
>>24080049
You move to pat Yukiho on the head, but think better of it as you notice her starting to cringe away from your movement and change the gesture to a reassuring, "don't worry about it" wave mid-reach. "That's alright, Yukiho. I wouldn't expect anybody to be able to remember all the details of a big cavern system like this, that would be ridiculous! We'll just go with the tunnel on the right. If it's not the right way, we'll just come back and try the other, no big deal."

You head off down the tunnel, leading your group. After a few minutes, you start to notice a faint noise coming from somewhere.

Dnk...Dnk...

A rapping, knocking sound, as of stone on stone. It stops for a bit, and you keep moving, but then you hear it again.

Dnk...Dnk...Dnk...

You call for a halt. If this is what you suspect it to be, you'll need to be prepared. Removing your helm, you press your ear against the wall of the tunnel and wait for the noise to come again.

Haruka asks, "Producer, what--"
You cut her off with a shush. You need to be able to hear.

It takes a few tense minutes, but then you hear it. The same knocking sound, and it's definitely emanating from the wall itself.

Dnk...Dnk...DnkDnk...

Re-donning your helm, you turn to the group.

"Kobolds," you inform them. "Stay on your toes."
>>
>>24080692
>kobolds
Fucking knew it.
>>
>>24079744
Uh-oh
>Kobolds: Kobolds are tunneling goblinoids covered in short, wiry fur, typically black or dark brown. They are more heavily muscled than typical goblins, with bigger, fanglike teeth. Their ears are very small, and their noses flat and somewhat doglike. Their eyes are quite large, and they seem to have exceptional night vision. They seldom venture above ground, and when they do it's nearly always at night. Kobolds excel at trapmaking, peppering their tunnels with cleverly-disguised hazards of all kinds.
>>
>>24080692
Kobolds. I love kobolds actually. I'm excited.

>>24080864
Actually GM, are you thinking more of the dog like Kobolds or the more reptilian ones?
>>
>>24080894
That's the GMs description from the glossary he made, don't have the like on me.
>>
>>24080692
You move onward in tense silence, keeping an ear out for the telltalle tapping of approaching kobolds. It grows and fades somewhat, but generally seems to trend louder over time.

"Either we're getting closer to them, or they're getting closer to us," you say.

The tunnel doubles back on itself in a sharp hairpin curve, and you see it start to widen out into a larger open space. You hear a faint trickle of water from up ahead.

You soon find yourself in a fairly sizable chamber, roughly the size of a small gathering hall. It's somewhat oblong in shape, bending around to narrow into another tunnel at the far end. There seems to be a flow of water running down the far wall. It sounds like there might be more such flows down this route. The sound of the water might make it difficult to keep tabs on the kobolds; even when they're right on top of you, their tapping generally isn't all that loud.

And you know that where there are kobolds, there's likely to be traps.

>What do you do?
>>
>>24080917

Have Mami and Yukiho do a spot check for traps (Keep the twins separated so they don't pull another ruse). Then if it's clear, see if we can set up an ambush somehow.
>>
>>24080894
Definitely more doglike in appearance. I'm kind of just taking my own approach to them based on an amalgamation of the original folklore, the various incarnations in modern fantasy fiction, and my own imagination.
>>
>>24080917
Traps are generally sensitive to knocks, right? Hair triggers and all?
Let's ask Yukiho if she can whack the wall and give it a bit of a shake. If she can't, or it would cost too much mana, we can just send the twins forward on the promise they might be able to earn their full pay if they're nice and careful and don't miss anything.
>>
>>24080917
Have Ami and Mami scout ahead for potential traps, keep Haruka and Miki on guard on the tunnel we came from in case something comes from behind. Stay ready with Yukiho to help the twins if they run into anything.

You tell Mami to go ahead into the room and scout for traps and signs of ambush.

"JUST Mami," you specify. "It seems I can't trust the two of you on your own together. Yukiho, I want you to follow behind Mami at a safe distance. Your earth magic might come in handy for finding or disabling traps built into the stone. If you run into trouble, call for help and we'll be right behind you."

The two head into the chamber, moving slowly as Mami carefully examines the area. As you wait at the mouth of the tunnel, you notice the lantern seems to be running rather low on fuel. The flame isn't guttering out just yet, but it would probably be a good idea to refill pretty soon.

Straining your ears to listen over the sound of the water, you faintly hear the "Dnk...Dnk..." of moving kobolds.

After fair number of minutes, you hear Mami call for you to come into the room.

"Not too far, though! I found one trap, y'see. Right here in the middle, a big pressure thingy!" She gestures to where a line is drawn on the floor in charcoal. "It's small enough to jump over, and I think we can use it!"

At your prompting, she explains that she found a number of holes drilled into the walls, concealed behind moss, lichen, and the rivulets of water flowing down.

"So, a dart fusillade?", you ask.

"Well, maybe poison gas," Mami says. "But! Butbutbut! If it is gas, Mikimiki can keep us safe, right?"

You look to the messy-haired blonde. "Can you?"

"Sure, probably," she replies, yawning broadly as she leans on her poleaxe.

"Alright. Let's dig in here and wait for the kobolds to come to us. If we're lucky, they'll trigger the trap themselves. If not, we can set it off ourselves."

With Mami's help, you figure out a good spot to set up your defense that should be out of the way of the darts (if that is indeed what they are). You'll need to cross the pressure plate to get there, and you're a bit worried about Haruka being able to make it over, but you manage to get everyone in position without issue.

And thus you begin the wait for the kobolds to come. You take advantage of this time to refill the oil in the lantern, having Haruka provide the light with her magic while you extinguish the flame and refill the reservoir.
>>
>>24082377
I can imagine if we had gone with a higher number, we would have triggered that plate. Either through Mami not spotting it or Haruka tripping onto it.

Good call on the reroll.
>>
>>24082377
Just as you're working to relight the lantern, you hear a sound like pouring gravel, and a portion of the wall opposite your position -- some fifty paces off, on the other side of the trap trigger -- seems to crumble and writhe before your eyes. Out of it steps a good dozen kobolds, armed with spears and pickaxes. Upon spotting you, they break into a charge. Unfortunately, they seem to be fully aware of the trap, leaping over the pressure trigger with practiced ease.

"Alright, let's go! Yukiho, trip the trap! Everyone else, like we discussed!"

Yukiho jabs her shovel into the base of the stalagmite before her and with a spirited yell channels mana into it, causing it to uproot and hurl itself forward, fragmenting into several chunks in midair. None of them hit the kobolds, as you'd hoped, but one did at least land on the pressure plate, triggering a storm of darts from the walls. The air is filled with the hiss of projectiles cutting their way through, and you see the kobolds flinch slightly as dozens of sharp shafts bury themselves in their sides.

Unfortunately, a slight flinching is about all they do. The darts appear to do no serious harm to the kobolds, who continue their charge without even breaking stride. Within moments they're upon you, the spear-wielders engaging Miki and cutting around to your flank as the ones with pickaxes leap at Haruka's and your shields. You stagger back under the force of a kobold's blow, and you hear a dull thud as Haruka is knocked to the ground.

The orb of light Haruka had conjured to illuminate the room while you refilled the lantern flickers and dims momentarily.

You hear startled cries as Ami and Mami -- who had concealed themselves at your flank using their illusions to intercept any kobolds that attempted to approach that way -- are assaulted head-on, the kobolds apparently seeing (or perhaps smelling?) through the concealment.

You hear a thud of metal against oak at your side, and the light flickers again as Haruka cries out in pain.

You shove the kobold engaging you away with your shield and lash out with a horizontal cut. Your blade finds purchase in kobold flesh, albeit only superficially. Immediately, another kobold leaps in to press the assault, hooking the edge of your shield with its pick. A stab in the ribs convinces it to back off.

Having bought yourself a moment of breathing room, you take stock of the battlefield. Aside from the two engaging you, there are two kobolds with pickaxes attacking Haruka, who is frantically trying to hold them off as she lies prone on the ground. Miki is tied up with three spear-wielders, attempting to keep their nimble stabbing attacks at bay with broad sweeps of her longer, but more clumsy, polearm. Ami and Mami are fighting back-to-back, surrounded by a quartet of spear-wielders.

You attempt to shift toward Haruka to give her a hand, but are forced to stop to deflect a renewed assault from your own assailants. As you hack at the hairy bastards, you call to Yukiho for help.

"R-right, um -- Eek! P-producer, there's more coming back here!"

As she says this, you see in the corner of your vision the kobolds attacking Haruka deliver a synchronized blow. Though she manages to get her shield in front of their picks, the force of the attack drives her flat on her back, slamming her shield flat against her.

With a shriek of pain, Haruka's helmet thuds against the stone floor.

And the light goes out.

Next time on iM@S Fantasy Quest: Are you afraid of the dark?

Sorry if I was a little sluggish tonight, I got hit by a wave of fatigue like a freight train just a couple hours in. Probably something to do with having gotten too little sleep of not terribly good quality thanks to work this week.

Next session should be next Friday at 8pm EST, assuming I'm remembering my schedule properly right now and nothing weird comes up.
>>
That, uh...

Hell of a cliffhanger.

If Haruka ends up dying I won't draw for this anymore. I'm joking of course but i'm quite upset by this.

That is to say, nicely written cliffhanger.

Well damn, that cliffhanger. I'll be looking forward to next session even more than usual. Take care of yourself QuestM@ster

She blocked the attack. So I'm guessing at worst she obtained brain problems.

We would've ended up as swiss cheese if we didn't reroll the 19. It's a lose-lose situation ya goof.

Too bad I wasn't here tonight. I would have reminded you guys to save the reroll as a last resort when shit hits the fan, not to use it to avoid possible trouble. But some of you have to learn the hard way.
