You are Kiritsugu von Einzbern, and you possess a very specific set of skills. A set of skills that make you a nightmare to sealing designates who choose to go the down the route of the "Philosopher". Nasty business, your line of work - it's always human experimentation this, becoming a Dead Apostle that, the occasional plan of omnicide - but its your little way of making the world a better place.

You took your wife's name at the end of the Fourth Grail War, because in a very real sense, the man who was Emiya Kiritsugu died when the Grail was completed. You selfishly betrayed your ideals that day, but being able to see your wife and daughter's smiling faces every day was definitely worth it.

Right now, is well after dusk, but not quite midnight. Your wife is in her laboratory, doing research that you really should be doing - you did promise Iri that you'd leave Illya more than the scraps you got from your father. Illya is in the upstairs lounge with your potege, Harry James Potter, watching the Princess Bride. The boy just got out of the hospital, and arrived 15 minutes ago.

You're fairly sure something is fishy going on with that kid, and it frustrates you - the Bounded Field around his house, the way his mother dropped off the face of the earth between her eleventh birthday and her death, the way his father appeared out of thin air, and his mysterious benefactor. You don't like it; whoever it is, they're good, and your offended by the futility of your efforts as a matter of pride.

But there's not much you can do about that right now. You decide to...

>Go visit Iri in the Laboratory.
>Go see if you can talk to someone at St. Mungo's about their werewolf containment.

Contract Familiar: You invest 10 prana into a nonsentient creature whose attitude is friendly or better, making it your familiar until you choose to end the spell, or it dies.

Night Sight: You invest 15 prana into your eyes, and may see in darkness as if it were daylight until you dismiss the spell.

Suggestion: You implant a hypnotic suggestion in your target, making them more amicable towards the action requested. Costs 6 prana per individual you are hypnotisizing.

Flame Burst: An offensive fire spell. You strike an enemy with an unarmed attack, and they burst into flame for an additional would. Costs 12 prana.

Pass Through Earth: You fill your body with some of your prana. You may pass through any earthen barrier for 10 rounds as if it were air. Costs 20 prana.

Time Alter (Double Acceleration): You create a false reality marble that allows you to accelerate your own personal time. This puts great strain on your body, but allows you to act twice per turn. At the end of your acceleration, you take a number of wounds equal to the number of rounds you accelerated yourself for. Costs 30 prana, lasts up to [END-Wounds] Rounds.

Time Alter (Triple Stagnation): You create a false reality marble that allows you to slow down your own personal time. This puts some moderate strain upon your body, but allows you to become almost completely silent. While stagnated, you may only take one move action or standard action per turn, but you gain a +6 to your stealth rating for the purposes of not being heard. When you dismiss the spell, you take 2 wounds. Lasts up to three minutes.

[TRAITS]

Grail War Victor: You have participated in a Grail War and laid your eyes upon the Holy Grail. You gain +4 to your Academics (Magecraft) Rating for information regarding them.

Overprotective Father: You gain a +2 to your [Martial Art] and Marksmanship Ratings when defending your daughter and/or her honor.

[PERKS]

Magus Killer - Your Stealth Rating, Marksmanship Rating, and [Martial Art] Rating increases by 2 when you're opposing a Magus.

Toughness - You have 2 additional wounds beyond your Endurance Rating.

Mixed Martial Arts - You are eligible to obtain an EX or higher rating in [Martial Arts] Skills.

So, I'm curious. If Harry's mysterious benefactor is always watching, would it be possible to say grab a nearby bird, make it a familiar and then write a letter to: "Harry's Benefactor. >Check to see if anyone followed Harry and Illya back from the St. Mungos.

You go to your desk and grab your trusty Tomphson contender. You don't load one of your Origin Bullets in it, but pick up one of the silver bullets Old Man Acht gave you for that trip to romania, just in case that werewolf fellow is still on the loose. It would be a shame to put such a nice fellow down, but if his rampage threatened your family, you'd have no choice.

It's been a while since you last used one of your Origin Specials. That was back when England didn't have a strong tradition of gender equity dating back to the 800s, and when Mallory's Le Morte d'Arturia was the Le Morte d'Arthur. You're glad that your old compatriot got her wish. You're also a bit nonplussed as to why it didn't effect your memory. Then again, the Grail does touch upon the True Magics, so...

You lean out of the doorframe, and something catches your ears. Its subtle but there, like the first kernel of popcorn cracking in the pan, or a Christmas ornament shattering from a tree. You turn to the left, but nothing's there.

You step outside to get a closer looks as to whatever might have caused that crack, murmurring a small aria to grant yourself night vision. No one is there, that you can see, but you don't quite trust your senses - you've dealt with illusions and mundane trickery enough to know to never trust your eyes. You take a few more steps out the door, and there's another crack, behind you.

You feel something press up against your back - a gun? A mystic code? A strongly accented male voice - you place it from South Africa, if your ears don't decieve you.

"I thought it was only muggle -criminals- that used those metal wands of theirs," the voice mutters. "Drop it, Mr. von Einzbern, and tell me what you've got to hide."

You drop the Thompson Contender - it's not like you don't have three others in your jacket anyways, and at this range, your fists are just as good, if not better. Besides, one of the rules of hostage situations were to do everything you could to make the holder believe that they had power, even if they were doomed to failure. That way, they got confident, they slipped up, and you could more easily exploit their mistakes.

You do somewhat wish that you hadn't put Maiya to the task of breaking into government records tonight; you're fairly certain that this man's the same sort of fake that James Potter was. Would have made your life a lot easier if she could just kneecap him for you.

"Mind filling me on what a 'muggle' is?" you ask.

"Not important," the man says. "Albus Dumbledore wants to know a bit more about the man who lives across the street from Harry Potter." Your gun starts to float off the the ground, into the hand of the man behind you. "Like why he's got one of those firelegs the please men are supposed to be carrying around."

Albus Dumbledore, huh? You'll keep that name in mind for the future.

"I'm a Police Man myself," you lie. "That's my service pistol."

"I though firelegs were supposed to have a magazine..." he trailed off, "Though why you'd need to read when casting... oh I see what you're doing."

"And what am I doing?" you ask.

"Stalling me. Trying to think up a clever way out - but I should tell you, you've got no idea what you're-"

You cut him off with a quick hold, taking control of his weapon arm and neutralizing its threat. Your foot slams down upon his leg, and you feel whatever it was in his hand slip from his grasp and fall to the floor. His leg now broken, you push him into the stairs behind your door, and train one of your back up pistols on him. The African fellow seems a bit stupefied, and stares in shock at whatever he dropped.

"So," you say cheerily, "mind filling in me on what a Muggle is?"

"A person who can't use magic," he replies.

"You need a term for that?" You ask, reaching down to pick up whatever it was he was pointing at you. You are oddly disappointed to discover that it is, in fact, a stick. A stick that seems to be a sort of rudimentary Mystic Code, but a stick none the less.

"Well, yes..." the man says. "This may come as a shock to you, Mr. von Einzbern, but there is another side to this world, one that cannot know exists, hidden away from the mundane folk. A world of people who can perform magic." He speaks with great gravity. "Harry is a part of this world."

"A secret society that can perform Magic..." You blanch. "That's... completely terrifying. It would explain why the documents you forged for a toddler were all but perfect. If you can do Magic, things like that are almost trivial..."

"Yes," the man nods. "It would be horrifying to a muggle like yourself, to know that such difficult tasks are trivial to the privileged. But you have to understand that, that for the good of everyone, you cannot be allowed to keep this knowledge."

You stare at him. Yeah, that's not gonna fly; but, pretending that you'll go along with it might get you some more information.

"So..." You trail off, as if in askance of a name.

"Kingsley Shacklebolt."

"Yeah, so Kingsley, if you're gonna mind wipe me anyways, mind telling me who this Dumbledore character is?"

"He is a good man," Shacklebolt says, "And an even greater Wizard."

"...You mean Sorcerer." You fill in. You might not be all that good at researching, but you know the terminology... well, mostly.

"Well, yes, that's another term. Mage, Sorcerer, Witch, Wizard, all the same thing, just different words."

Short version, so you can keep up is this.
There are two types of "magic" in the Nasuverse. Magecraft, or Thaumaturgy, is the ability to reproduce what can be scientifically realized regardless of time and funds. The limits of Magecraft have changed with time, as science evolved and Sorceries from before became technically possible through science.
http://typemoon.wikia.com/wiki/Magecraft
The term "Magic" is reserved for the Five True Magics, events that are unachievable through the mere expenditure of time and resources, so no matter the difficulty, events brought about through such methods will never be seen as Magic.
http://typemoon.wikia.com/wiki/Magic

Basically, if "muggles" can get the same end result through science and tech, it's Magecraft, if the end result is something that should be impossible by our understanding of the universe, it's Magic.
>>
>>24188839
>The limits of Magecraft have changed with time, as science evolved and Sorceries from before became technically possible through science.

To illustrate this, before the Wright brothers did it, someone being able to fly was a True Magic, the instant they succeeded at flying it became Magecraft.
>>
>>24188880
Actually, it became Magecraft as soon as the Montgolfier brothers flew via hot air balloon.
The Wright Brothers achieved the first HEAVIER THAN AIR flight. What do they teach in schools these days?

You're wrong, I'm extremely sure.
>>
>>24188760

>>
>>24188966
>Since shit is shaped up by beliefs, If I got that properly as long as people think It's fucking dumb and impossible, the general population's "uh-huhIdon'tThinkSo" makes It magical?

Not quite, it's simply "If it couldn't be achieved in some way with technology then it's classed as a Magic." Bringing someone back from the dead is Magic, healing someone who's badly hurt could just be done at a hospital and is thus Magecraft. There's nothing metaphysical about it, it's just what people have defined them as.
>>
>>24188966
Magic is more god of the gaps.

Nothing to do with belief, just arbitrary categorizations.

Like every other SCIENCE humanity does

"Just a question before I give this back," you say, giving the stick in your hands a little twirl. "Do you have any intention to bring harm to any of the other residents of this household?"

Now, here's the neat thing about bounded fields; you can set them up to detect almost anything - from intrusion, to thoughts of malice, to whether they consider a specific person any enemy, to lies. Mind you, they aren't perfect - nothing ever is - but they're good enough for the vast majority of purposes. Such as posing an earnest question to a wounded man sitting on your stairwell.

"No," He says, "I was only sent here to observe you, and see why Mr. Potter didn't return to his family's home when he left St. Mungos."

There is no lie, that your fields can tell.

"Good," you say cheerily, "I'd have hated to have had to kill you. You seem like a nice, intelligent fellow." Your vision turns dark. "I mean, besides the whole breaking and entering unwelcomed into the sanctum of a Magus without any backup. That was all sorts of stupid." You sigh. "I mean, I'd have had to clean up before my daughter and Harry get done watching their movie and come running down the stairs for another one."

"You would have killed me in cold blood?" The man asks, a little bit frightened.

"In a heartbeat," you say. "I am the dreaded Magus Killer, after all. And, just so you know, the terminology is very important. I mean, for a second there, you had me thinking all of you and this Albus Dumbledore could perform one of the True Magics."

"You're a wizard, von Einzbern?" He asks, nonplussed. "And what is this True Magic?"

Think of it as flying with brooms = magecraft, because 'flying with assistance' is possible, even if it's unlikely.
Flying because 'fuck gravity,' buck naked with nothing but the power of your mind? Magic. It's impossible.
Magecraft = Unlikely
Magic = Impossible.

Blood transfusions are probably equally effective, transmission of bodiky fluids and all, but they'd require much more equipment.

That's just wrong, before the first hot air balloon flight, flying in any way was Magic, be it naked or riding a carpet. Flying in any way after that is Magecraft because you can fly with technology. You can't just make something a Magic by putting limitations on how you do it otherwise Projection would be a True Magic cause you're not using any tools to make something stronger.

You poor, poor anon.
>>
>>24189531

/a/ will tell you to read the VNs, so will I, but not everyone has the appetite for it, so I will just say go find a batch torrent of Fate Zero and spend a few days on it. Damn good show, covers most of the basics along the way.

Though playing the F/SN VN is the best option. I suggest you avoid the F/SN anime, however.

Kara No Kyoukai is also a fine choice. Its a movie series.
>>
>>24189531
Play Tsukihime or Fate/Stay Night. You can get english patches at mirrormoon.org.
>>
>>24189531
Tsukihime doesn't cover much magic (arc briefly mentions circuits in passing) so it stands alone pretty well.

Play Fate/Stay as well, it covers all of magecraft.

stay away from the animes that aren't Fate/Zero (BROSKANDER)
>>
>>24189548
>>24189558
>watch Fate/zero

Only do this if you have no intention of playing Fate/stay night ever. It spoils the VN massively.
>>
>>24189575
>stay away from the animes that aren't Fate/Zero (BROSKANDER)
Or Kara no Kyoukai. Kara no Kyoukai is a DAMN good adaptation of the books. It also has Best Shiki in it.
>>
>>24189582

This is true. I tend to forget. That said, several non-VN inclined friends of mine have gotten into the Verse through Zero, so I do not hesitate to recommend it.
>>
>>24189582
But the VN can be a pretty fucking boring shit for a first timer and I won't blame him for dropping that
>>
>>24189624

Yes, this is what I thought. I loved the VN, to an extreme degree, but I will be the first to admit it can drag in many parts.

So, as I said, if someone wants a quick in to the setting, F/Z is a great choice, if they don't mind spoiling some, but not all, of F/SN.
>>
>>24189624
The problem with the VN is that the first route, which you HAVE to play before the others, is Fate, the most boring of the routes. I mean, it's necessary because it gets all the exposition and shit out of the way to let Unlimited Blade Works and Heaven's Feels do their things, but that doesn't make it any less dry.
>>
>>24189678
>Heaven's Feels
I see what you did there.
>>
>>24189697
it was truly a heartwrenching route
>>
>>24189678

Opinions.

I really enjoyed Fate, especially as someone who was new to the setting. Though it does have a high amount of more mundane slice of life stuff, and if the central romance of the route doesn't click for you, it will be somewhat of a drag.
>>

>>
>>24189738
One thing to keep in mind, these aren't really "games" in that sense. They're Visual Novels. You know those "choose your own adventure" books you probably read as a kid? They're like that. There's no real "gameplay", you just make choices as they pop up.
Also, losing is FUN in Fate and Tsukihime, because it gets you Tiger Dojos and Teach Me Ciel-Senseis, respectively.

There is only one real way through the game, up until the final moments. Yeah, there are variations, but it is 90% linear if not more.

So what is the appeal of the Nasuverse, aside from the waifus?
I mean seriously, I've seen like 3 quests about it, and I thought it was just one of those CYOA things with porn. And then an anime or something.
What, exactly, is the draw of the setting?
>>
>>24190145

>>
>>24190145

Well, it does have H-scenes, but they are terrible and more of a well known joke to fans than anything that draws people in.

Cool magic system, huge tournament of historical figures fighting to the death, vampires, immortals, all sorts of stuff. Its comparable to World of Darkness in scope and appeal, just with a Japanese bent.
>>

Fate/stay night is about 7 humans and 7 servants. Each servant is a hero from legend who's weapons are the embodients of one of their legends (Eg king arthur has excalibur). They all fight to get the holy grail which can grant a wish. Shit gets grim, people get broken, Heck the character you play has been mentally broken since he was a child.

Tsukihime is about a guy who can see the death of nearly everything, and can kill nearly everything. He kills the wrong thing and it comes back to haunt him.

>>
>>24190482
You would be shocked how little difference there actually is between most alternate universes.

Oh, granted, there's always going to be the odd one out. Well… actually, there are an infinite number of odd ones out. You see, the nature of the multiverse is that it's not actually 'multi' so much as 'omni'. Everything that could have possibly happened has happened, and more than that, it has happened an infinite number of times across an infinite number of universes. Therefore it is impossible for any universe to truly be odd, because any given universe is nothing more or less than the sum total of an infinite number of things happening or not happening in combination, and there will be another universe where the exact opposite things happened, and between them will be universes with all of those (again, infinite) things happening in wildly different or nearly identical combinations. And each of those will have an opposite too. And then there are the ones where nothing happened, ever, and the worlds where things have stopped happening. And there are an infinite number of those as well, many of them with subtly different definitions of 'nothing' happening, and sometime the nothing from one leaks into another and becomes something there because that universe has different rules of nothing, so what doesn't exist in one universe not only exists in another, it always has existed and always will exist, while in yet another universe it will never haven't not existed.

And just think: if you were one of my apprentices, I'd be quizzing you on this later. And people wonder why they traditionally don't last long.

>>
>>24190546
In any event, my point was, there are many, many alternate worlds. And many of them are strange indeed. I've seen worlds where life on Earth took vastly different paths; a landscape made up of monumental crystalline mountains constantly wreathed in emerald lightning, populated by formless energy creatures that fed on magnetic charges. I've seen worlds where humanity evolved more quickly; a race of psychics and superhumans who make our greatest achievements look as transient and meaningless as children's sandcastles... and who tear their world apart in wars the scale of which we cannot even imagine. Worlds where man never evolved at all, leaving Gaia wild, cruel, and untamed… but far more beautiful and vibrant, in her own harsh way.

I once saw a world of nothing but shrimp. I tired of that one quickly.

But a surprising number of worlds are nothing like that at all. They're just… exactly what you know. One little difference, maybe two. One person's life is changed, and that's a whole different world. Even though only a select few people are affected, it's still a world all its own.

And sometimes, that rarest of rarities… sometimes, that one little change is just the first few rocks that signal an avalanche, and by the end, the world that used to be so much like your own isn't even recognizable. They say that a butterfly flapping its wings can cause a hurricane on the other side of the world, if it hits the air currents just right. They're not wrong. Sometimes, it doesn't even take that much.

And sometimes not.

And sometimes both. Or neither. Or all of the above, repeating infinitely in a cascade of possible and impossible actions and reactions across all of time and space.

Isn't magic fun?

>Which was also blue.

>"Are…are you some kind of religious fanatic who's going to gut me and wear my skin to commune with the immortal spirit of Rei Ayanami or something?" Shirou babbled.

>Oh yes. His brain really went places when he was stressed out. Stupid places.

>However, unlike the flagrantly rude question would suggest, Shirou continued to look up at Lancer with wide eyes. Eyes which were clear of mocking while he stared up at the older man.

>The older man, Cú Chulainn or the Heroic Spirit Lancer, just continued to gape at the young man with a look of profound confusion.

>Shirou went from nervous to a full blown anxiety attack, thinking this silence meant a confirmation.

>"Oh god, just don't flash Rei-chan at me!" He wheezed out in a high pitched voice, holding his hands up to try and prevent the sight from potentially being burned onto his retinas. "I don't want to see Rei-chan!"

>The legendary hero of renown and timeless antiquity, merely continued to stare at the Japanese youth for a few more moments in silence.

>Shirou felt his hope rise. Was he going to be spared the Rei?

>The redhead began to relax from his mission critical levels of stress when no angry shouts, furious punches, or sharp, pointed denouncements as to the moral integrity, and positions favored by his mother followed.

>Perhaps…just perhaps Shirou was wrong? Besides the potential dead end of having several feet of steel shoved into him, this man didn't seem to be that bad. Certainly not bad enough to be accused of believing in Rei Ayanami as the next Messiah.

So Harry Potter's world is another kind of magic that lives nested within the Nasuverse?

Oh fuck the hell yes.
>>24190184
I've heard folks describe it as The Classic World of Darkness, occasionally pepper with the weirdness of Unknown Armies side-story elements, and fashioned by anime stereotypes.

>>24189147
Magecraft is pretty much this, yeah. It's stuff which is weird by most 'normal'/muggle standards, but is still 'possible' (Lightning is possible according to the laws of physics, so being able cause lightning to shoot from your fingertips is also possible.)

(Yes, I know that's not how it works. This shit would be so much clearer if Nasu were scientifically literate and knew how physics worked, but fuck it. Just handwave it.)

True Magic is pretty much stuff which is defined as impossible. AFAIK, there are only a handful of things which fall into this category: making Something From Nothing, Time Travel, Teleportation, Visiting Parallel Universes, and Creating/Transplanting the Soul. Some folks can attempt this, but they still don't fully get it.

Note: While we say there are Five remaining True Magics according to the wiki/ TATARI on byehost, the only English sources are questionably translated side materials published by a vague and possibly insane Japanese man. Take with a grain of salt.

Note:The Type Moon Wiki has a touch of a reputation of fanwank. While not a bad place to start, better information can be found on TATARI

>>
>>24192946
I mean more the "I shoot it from my fingertips to create a dramatic, devastating attack because I jimmy the Laws of Nature." Everyone who ever got static shock in the winter has technically generated lightning, but that's not on the scale on which that makes for an awesome fight scene is very different.

Nasu doesn't know how physics works in a detailed manner and his justification of "It's allowed by the laws of nature, so it is possible!" doesn't hold up when you do the math on how much energy a human would have to generate in/around their body to produce a nice, satisfying lightning-strike like a Hollywood special effect, but like I said, just handwave it. The wizards say they can generate flame in their hands because flame is a natural phenomena, so by golly they can do it.

There's a weird marriage of the belief-based paradigm, too. Certain styles of Magecraft don't work in certain regions of the world. This isn't due to a caster's proximity local leylines and other energy sources, but because to their magical school's philosophical system. (Apparently, Taoist magecraft runs on different principles than European magecraft, and so the the two schools aren't compatible. Dn't quote me on this, but reading the KnK novels and replay FSN kind of tipped me off to some of this.

Let's not even get into the non-humans in the setting and their powers (like how Arcueid's Marble Phantasm is less powerful in populated areas because "they're less natural" or some shit. Fucking Nasu, why do your worlds have to be as convoluted as they are cool!)

>>24193063

Thats true, but if you had enough time, money, and science know-how you COULD construct a machine to replicate the effect, however inefficient it may be.

I assume his magic would have to work in whatever universe he's in, meaning he'd be limited to world where Nasuverse magic applies. He couldn't pop into, say, the LotR universe unless it was a LotR/Nasuverse crossover, because Magic Circuits aren't a thing there.

Zelrecht is one of the most powerful living human beings in existence and no one can fucking stop him. Rather than being a malicious shitheel, though, he just fucks around with his god-tier magic and uses what's left of his immense cosmic power sightseeing parallel worlds and being a mercurial (though polite) jackass.
He is the Nasuverse's equivalent of Doctor Who, if the Doctor were Chaotic Neutral and a vampire.

>>24194029
I'd imagine him being the kindly grandfather type who'd give you a cryptic riddle with a bullshit answer to make you work harder until you achieved what you needed to achieve.

"You want to know how long ago it was since Crimson Moon died? Why should I jut give you the answer and give you the easy way out? Now, that Granger girl, she's got access to the Forbidden Library...."

And then the next novel, Harry Potter and the Rod of Many Worlds, is written.

>>24194124
I try not to think too hard about timelines in this. I seriously doubt Nasu has a well-maintained timeline going for the entire Nasuverse, and he wrote the damned setting. I think he just goes on "this happened in the past, don't bother me with details. Now shut up and eat your seafood."

>>24194140
>>24194195
To be fair, most Mages use magic energy (aka prana) from outside their bodies (mana) and only in the direst of situations use the internal stuff (Od).

If Zelrecht visit a world where magic is caused by making deals with spirits, then the prana-from-outside breaks down.
>>
>>24194397
>If Zelrecht visit a world where magic is caused by making deals with spirits, then the prana-from-outside breaks down.
>Implying he can't get Prana from other worlds
Rin does it with her copy of the Jeweled Sword.
>>
>>24194397

(AFAIK, he also has a macguffin that allows him to drain prana from alternate realities and thus makes him OP-as-fuck, but that's another matter.

Zelrecht can only travel to Possible Worlds (to use a philosophical term), i.e. he can't travel to a world in which it is impossible (as defined by said world's laws of physics/magic/whatever) to receive visitors from other worlds. If we assume that alternate realities are splitting off from every possible event, then for every world which Zelrecht wants to leave his, is another world where he never does this. Likewise, for every world Zelrecht visits, there is a spin-off one where he never visits.

And so, while there are infinite possible worlds, only a fraction of these (an infinite subset of a larger infinite set) can ever be interacted with in any meaningful way.

And that, boys and girls, is why magic should be reserved for solving practical problems such as OH SHIT A WEREWOLF COMING AT ME KILL IT NOW
>>
>>24194458
I get the feeling you could troll Zeltrech pretty hard if you pointed this out to him, leaving him desperately trying to get to worlds with the trait 'Zeltrech never visited' without making them 'Zeltrech never visited BUT THEN HE DID' for a good few years.

I also have the feeling that someone's already done this so it wouldn't work anymore.

>>
>>24194847
I think the implication is that BOTH societies exist, but both are paranoid as fuck about the Normals figuring it out. Which, incidentally, keeps the other society from noticing, since they both are forced to assume that anyone who isn't THEIR kind of mage is just a regular dude.

Interestingly, this means there has probably been at least one instance of a magus and a wizard falling in love with what they THOUGHT was a regular old boring person, and eventually breaking the news to them that yes, their beloved is a WIZARD, only to be told that they are ALSO a wizard, but a different kind.

Odds are equally good that any families that resulted from this kind of union have decided to just keep this clusterfuck on the downest of lows to avoid both groups coming down hard on them.

>I think the implication is that BOTH societies exist, but both are paranoid as fuck about the Normals figuring it out.

This is my default assumption as well. Still, another thought experiment won't hurt, and I kind of like trying to cook up alternate realities from the implications of a given historical event.

The idea of a Magus/Wizard hybrid is offly interesting, actually. I read up a bit on Kingsley Shacklebolt (I have NO idea who half of the Potterverse names are; I stopped reading after Book 4), and found that human-magical critter hybrids are surprisingly common. Half-giants, half-veela half-goblins - there's a surprising amount of interbreeding. (HP wizards are closer to /tg/'s ideals than we ever realized)

I think a Nasu-Magus/HP-Wizard cross could function quite well, if discretion is kept.

Well, as I posted in the last thread I'm 99% sure thats a quirk specific to Shiki(male)'s eyes because he's 'faking' it so to speak. His Eyes come from understanding death in his brain rather than actually being the Eyes, which is what fucks him up.

>Tell him to do his own damned research.

You don't take your gun off the large african man, but you do take a hand off of your gun to reach into your jacket's pocket. You pull out a box of cigarettes, a special type, hand rolled in Singapore by a magus you used to be pals with. A single tap pops one of them out far enough for you to grab it with your teeth. Iri will probably have words for you later, but it's been a long fucking day, and you've finally found some answers.

You snap your fingers, and a little flame leaps from your thumb, lighting the tip. Kingsley looks just a bit more relaxed - you suppose that demonstration was enough for him. At least you don't have to go swimming through stone; that mystery is never pleasant.

"Yeah, I'm a magus," you tell him, "And if you're a magus, you should know the price of privileged information." You take a drag. "Blood, tears, and bribes."

"Ain't that the truth," he says. "Lot's of things seem privileged about you, Mr. Kiritsugu. Wandless Magic is quite an impressive skill for a wizard the Ministry doesn't know about."

>At the command of the El-Melloi Lords faction within the Mage's Association, the Archibald family was left in ruins after the ninth head, Kayneth Archibald El-Melloi, was assassinated in the Fourth Grail War. Although Kayneth and Waver did not get along, Waver was still Kayneth's unofficial apprentice and he helped the Archibald family recover. With the situation cleared, the tenth head of the family, a little girl from the lowest branch of the clan, appointed Waver with the title "Lord El-Melloi II" as his reward.

>"I recognize your deeds to the Archibald family, but since you were only making up for what you caused in the first place, you better serve me for your entire life."

>As Lord El-Melloi II, he became a famous lecturer in the Clock Tower for detecting the hidden talent of others and training it. No they can't, that was just a stylistic choice in the movie. Ryougi's eyes don't cook her brain for whatever reason, likely because either she was in her coma for longer, giving her brain longer to adjust to her connection to the Root than Tohno, or because of some fundamental difference in how the two of them see the world.

Sage because I'm replying to an hour-old post.

It has not, but someone without the MEoDP cannot interact with the lines at all unless physically guided by someone who does. Since the Mystic Eye Killers suppress the eyes, it would be a reasonable assumption to say he cannot interact with them when he's looking through the lenses of his glasses.

You snort. You wonder what sort of terrible intelligence networks these guys are working with to not be able to put two and two together. Its nearly as shoddy as relying on a known traitor as your only source of information. You wonder if they don't even know that the kid's relatives despise the boy. It wouldn't suprise you, given how much pull the myserious benefactor seems to have.

"My wife and daughter both adore the boy," you say. "His relatives, on the other hand, seem to loathe his very existance, from what I've seen and heard. Would you care to put two and two together, or should I spell it out for you?"

Shacklebolt, to the credit of his character and defamation of his infomants, looks mortified. His back up wand falls, and he doesn't even seem to care that you have a gun pointed at his right lung. That his expression changes back to wariness almost instantaneously shows that he isn't one of those bleeding hearts, at least, and takes his job seriously. If you both come out of this alive and not at each other's throats, you might have to buy the man a drink sometime.

"They told me his family cared for him as if he were their own son," he says.

You gesture at the back up wand with your gun.

"Maybe you should go check," you say, "Might be worth your time. The bounded field around the place doesn't like malintent. Even if you just want to have a stern talk, it'll give you a nasty shock if you're not keyed in to it." You flip his other wand into your free hand with your foot. "I'll hold to this one for now, so you've got a reason to come back and tell me what you find."

"I'd do the same." The big guy waves his stick over his broken leg, and there's a bit of a white glow - healing mystery, you suspect. He stands up, and has the courtesy to walk out the door before teleporting. "I'll tell you what I find, and maybe you can tell me about this true magic."

"Maybe," you acknowledge. Fast learner, too. He vanishes in a pop.

You've probably got a good while before Shacklebolt gets back. You...

The first priority when dealing with intruders is ensuring the health and safety of any children you are responsible for, doubly so if they are your own. You don't think that Shacklebolt was the type who would resort to those sort of measures to ensure cooperation, but given the lies he had been fed, you wouldn't put it past his employers. After all, its not like Old Man Acht had never done anything behind your back that even your old twisted sense of morality wouldn't have been able to stomach.

You suspect that he and this Dumbledore character would get along swimmingly. Or try to punch eachother in the face for being so damned the same. Either or.

You slip up the stairs as silently as always, and creek open the second door on the left. Harry and Illya are safe and sound, and have unfortunately fallen asleep before they reached the scene with Inigo Montoya harping on about his father and revenge. You always loved that scene. You're not quite sure if you approve of the fact that they fell asleep under the same blanket, but Illya will likely be mortified when she wakes, so its okay.

Sure that the kids are safe, you creep on down to the subbasement, where your wife - and you, though you rarely use it - keeps the laboratory. You know your wife loves working on this sort of thing, but you're always a little freaked out by the symbology on the wall when you come down here. It reminds you too much about what your dad used to do.

Making it one of the 'okay to smoke' rooms was non-negotiable when you built it.

You light up a cigarette, and...

You check transcriber, frowning. Damned magi and their damned pride, why couldn't they be reasonable folk like the mundanes and use computers for transmitting information instead of these unsettling... things. There are several messages from the Clock Tower, mostly asking if you and Iri could get Illya to convince Zelretch to 'Stop his latest brand of foolishness.' And see - there's another thing that a computer could be used for: keeping them from wasting your time with spam.

You then decide that the best way to come into the lab is how you always go places - be invisible until you want to be seen. You wast a little prana, a thing you've been doing since Iri installed those bells on the door, and phase through the wall. A benefit of the room having been shaped by magecraft instead of more mundane means - everything remain 'untouched by the labours of man.'

You sneak up behind Iri, and embrace her.

"Suprise!" You chirp cheerily. Yes, you chirp. Its not something you do often, but you can't help it when you're around Iri. She leans into you, and you bask in one anothers presence for a happy moment.

Yeah. Fuck your old ideals. This is more important, even if it is selfish.

"What brings you down to the lab, dear?" Iri asks, gently pouring the contents of one vial into another.

"Some good and some bad," you breathe into her ear. "Harry woke up from his coma, and I've got a new lead on the... anomalies I've been finding around his parents."

"That's wonderful." She gets that terrifying glint in her eyes. "Oh, did he and Illya fall asleep on the couch upstairs again. I didn't get to take pictures last time!"

>Field too long.
>>
>>24197531
"Yeah, they're fine," you take a gander at her work - and promptly realize that you can't make heads or tales of the formulae she's written down. "I checked on them after I saw the man who came to check on Harry out. He... didn't exactly knock." You shrug. "Nice enough fellow though."

"Oh, well that's rude," she declares. She puts the mixture over a flame. "He didn't give us time to make tea... Oh, honey, could you watch this for a moment? I've gotta get my camera..." She slips from your arms, and gives you a kiss before running off. "If it turns green, its working!"

Shaking your head in bemusement, you...

[WARNING: PARTIAL CRITICAL FAILURE]

You take a look at the notes that your wife laid upon the table a bit more closely, now that you have an opportunity. It's in Greek, which surprises you a little bit, but its not like your work didn't demand you to be fluent in an obscene number of languages, dialects, and accents. You decipher the Greek, and find that the Aria she used to transmute these particular components is amazingly complex.

It doesn't actually go into the specifics of the forces which she wishes to act upon the components in order to shape them into what she wants. It makes vague references to various bits of mythology which themselves make reference to certain events throughout history which could be used to describe the desired end result.

You aren't a good enough historian to understand many of them. The only one you really get is to the Virgin Mary and the Immaculate Conception - perhaps this is part of that contract she made with the Church a few weeks back?

You try to find a page describing the regeants, and...

Oh. Oh dear. You knew those fluids were good mediums by which to transfer prana, but...

Especially considering it's probably for the church. You'd think they'd be a bit hung up if they...

"Teehee!" Iri giggles as she steps back into the room. "Those two are so~cute together! But I think I got enough pictures - a whole roll of film should be enough, right Kerry~? Oh!" She runs to the flask, and takes it off the burner. "Its done!"

"Illya," you ask slowly, "What is this potion supposed to do, exactly?"

"Oh!" She smiles brightly. "Well, it's to help me get preganant again, dear!"

You almost breathe a sigh of relief. Perhaps its your own hang ups on prefering the mundane way of life to that of the magus, but the more bodily aspects of magecraft have always weirded you out just the slightest bit. The thought of Iri selling something to the Church containing those particular bodily fluids of hers was less than pleasant. Though, now you're a little put out that she didn't ask you to help her, ah, harvest them.

Hypocisy? Possibly; but its the principle of the matter.

"You want to get pregnant again?" you ask.

"I was thinking Illya needs a little brother!" she exclaims happily. "She has a boyfriend you won't immediately try to kill now, and I... I really want to have another child. A boy this time." Her eyes light up. "We could name him after Gilgamesh!"

You frown. You didn't like Gilgamesh all that much. He was a powerful ally, to be sure, and took he took his inevitable fight with his "Darling Arturia" in stride, but... he didn't take the Grail War seriously at all. It was just a game to him - a test of his own prowess against the heroes that followed him. Worse, he kept trying to woo your servant - the first Hero of Man was a flirtatious playboy, apparently.

Even worse, you're fairly sure that she reciprocated at some point!

"We couldn't have gotten through the war without him, I suppose," you concede. Well, you could have given Arturia Avalon earlier, but Acht told you to keep that in reserve until you needed it.

"And he was such a gentleman, too!"

Lets mope and change the subject.
>>
>>24198712
Oh jesus christ that was a typo. Iri, That was supposed to be Iri.

(As for Arturia, Gil's rather earnest persistence managed to make a few chinks in that emotional armor of hers, and, well, this and that happened the night before their final battle.)
>>
>Mope. Then change the subject.

>>Mope. Then change the subject.
"I thought I got better at the whole well-mannered thing"

>>24198789
So this is the noblebritght version of FSN.

I think I can dig it!
>>
>>24198789
>this and that
I take it you mean that in the 42nd Street sense. . .
>>
>>24198865
If by 42nd Street sense, you mean as a euphemism for wild, passionate, girl on top sex that made Arturia finally come to terms with her identity as a woman, then yes.
>>
>>24198789
Did he declare Mornington Crescent on her lower back, perhaps?
>>
>>24198942
Actually, I meant in the sense of a euphemism for "tits and ass".
>>
>>24198789
>>24198942
Man, now I'm wondering if Gil pulled a stunt similar to what he did in CCC ie go 'fuck your rules' and take his Master into space for adventures after the war ended.
>>
So did anything come of that? Arturia having her real body and all makes me wonder if that would explain the timeline shift that accommodates the Harry Potter setting.

Merlin in Nasuverse is an obscenely potent dick, so he may have had a hand in it as well.
>>
>>24198970
Wait, what the fuck did Gil do now?
>>
>>24198942
So when she got back, did she proceed to fuck Lancelot until his pelvis shattered?
>>
>>24198970
Is Gil just arbitrarily powerful? Like superman or something?
>>
>>24198998
>Gilgamesh's ending features the Protagonist returning to the Near Side of the Moon to take part in the Holy Grail War of Fate/Extra, forgetting the Servant they have contracted. They find Gilgamesh sitting nude in their room, surprised at his existence because he was supposed to be limited only to the Far Side. He simply says "I broke that rule." It then proceeds to the deletion of the Protagonist's data at the end of the Holy Grail War, but Gilgamesh instead insults the Moon Cell, takes the Protagonist, and decides to head out for "any planet with intelligent life and an emphasis on consumption and progress." They end up on a planet 1,500 light years away from Earth.

>Merlin in Nasuverse is an obscenely potent dick

I read that as "Merlin in Nasuverse has an obscenely potent dick." I think I need to sleep now.

>>24198689
Clever pun! Or was that a pun....

>>24198682
>>24198680
Illya is a Russian boy's name, so we should give our son a Russian girl's name, to balance!
>>
>>24199056
Well, he GAVE an obscenely potent dick to Arturia so she could sleep with Morgan Le Fay...
>>
>>24199006
Naw, he just has the power of Ancient Babylonian Technology.

In Prototype, he has an Ancient Babylonian Orbital Strike Platform, to which his Bow is the targeting device.

In Zero, he has an Ancient Babylonian Flying Saucer, with which he duels Lancelot, who happens to be piloting an F-16.
>>
>>24199006
Kinda. Better than superman in some ways and less in others. Has far more swag and extremely nice things. Think an inbetween of superman and batman. Lots of super gadgets to compensate for less personal power (but holy shit so much more than a normal guy)
>>
>>24199072
>>24199006
Who would win in a fight between Superman and Gilgamesh?

Keep in mind that Gil actually has a chance since he's heavily dependent on magic, which can actually seriously fuck up Supes.
>>
>>24199096
I'd say since Gilgamesh has a quantum arsenal going on he'd win because he'd have some sort of doohickey that prevents Superman from punching him so fast and hard he gets knocked back to the time where a snake ate his potion of fucking youth.
>>
>>24199065
>piloting
If by piloting you mean 'riding on top of it and using your magical powers to turn it into a noble phantasm', then sure, he was piloting an F16.
>>
>>24199065

If I ever want to get friends to watch Fate/Zero, I describe that last one to them.
>>
>>24199065
>>24199139

At the speed they were going the poor pilot's body was probably paste.

that is if You can Survive Berserker Assuming Direct control
>>
>>24199096
If Gil takes it seriously and goes all out? He probably wins. Otherwise Superman probably takes it.

It's possible Gil would (mistakenly) brand Kal-El as a Type, in which case things could get very interesting and quite bloody.
>>
>>24199167

Always wanted to run a Nasuverse campaign about the mundane world responding to the Magus issue after being tipped off by that F16's black box.

Need to find a system for it.
>>
>>24199238
The Clocktower or The Church probably had someone "take care" of it.
>>
>>24199238
The Third Holy Grail War involved nazis trying to steal the grail with whole situation going completely nuts with conventional armies fighting servants for control of the Grail.

Something like that anyway. It's not very clear. Apocrypha hints at it but details are scarce.
>>
>>24199304
You are now picturing a Servant riding atop a Tiger II demanding that the crew drive him closer, so he can hit them with his sword.

"Alright, alright," you concede, moping just a little bit. "Just, make sure you've got the formula perfected before we use it. The matter of Illya's baby brother is of the utmost importance, after all."

"Of course, dear." Iri replies. "Making children is the best part after all!"

You aren't quite sure if that was an innuendo, an invitation, or just Iri expressing her love of alchemy, but you aren't quite sure that you want to change the subject quite yet. You decide that, in case a subject change is needed, snuggle hugging your wife is the best way to go about it. Iri responds with a rather unsubtle reminder that the children are asleep and there is no need to keep it to simple snuggling.

It takes a few minutes for you two to slowly make it over to your desk, which is much safer to use for certain activities, as neither of you particularly want to do any walking. You clear away your notes with one hand, and heave Iri bodily onto your desk, hiking her dress up beyond her thighs...

Of course, right as things get interesting, the doorbell rings.

"Son of a bitch," you curse.

Iri puts her finger to her mouth in confusion. "Who could that be, at this hour?"

"Dammit, I told him to knock," you murmur, "Not ring the fucking doorbell."

"Kiri!" Iri pouts. "Language!"

You pout. Yes, pout. Your fucking only lead just interrupted your happy-fun time with Iri, of course you pout.

"Fine," you sigh, rebuttoning your shirt. "I'll go let him in."

"I'll make some tea!"

When you get to the door, you are...

We are Kiritsugu von Einzbern. We may have realized that our old ideals sucked shit, but we still follow The Rules.
Be polite.
Be efficient.
Have a plan to kill everyone you meet.

Sounds about right.

>>24199259

I was planning to have a rogue Magus have hidden it in order to use it to bring about a war between the magic and mundane. He was supposed to be a sort of BBEG for the campaign, though one I was hoping the players might consider joining.
>>
>>24199490
Seconding this.

>implying magi know what a black box is
Rin barely understands cell phones and she's a genius amongst mages. There is no way in hell any of those fuckers in the clock tower know about black boxes.
>>
>>24199627
Yes pretty much.
>>
>>24199666
That's why I said "Or The Church".
Also, the correct phrase is "Rin thinks a Blu-Ray Recorder is Laserdisc."
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DHtlRlFRU30
And before anyone spergs out, yes, I know, Carnival Phantasm is arguably non-canon. Although Zelretch would probably disagree.
>>
>>24199666
Well clearly the BBEG would have to be a Magic User, not a magus.
>>
>>24199666
Well, there's always that crazy guy on the fringe or something, like Kerry. It's not too implausible that some 4th son who was never considered heir quality who was allowed to play with tech would keep using it if he becomes heir in some freak accident.
