All right. So, two days ago we were using the rules from the "A Song of Ice and Fire" RPG to randomly generate a noble house for the setting. The project was quite fun and we created a rather interesting and entertaining house as a result.

Since some of the people in that thread lamented that the past two Game of Thrones quests have come to untimely ends, I made the offer to start a quest thread and see if it would gain any interest, on a Friday at 9PM. In other words, right now.

If anyone is still interested in this, feel free to come right in and post. Once I'm certain there's enough interest, I'll start.

So, is anyone in?

In this quest, the year is 284AL and we represent House Harrock, servants of the Vale and sworn to House Arryn. Our house was born from treachery when the Andals invaded Westeros and Ser Artys Arryn the Winged Knight claimed the Mountain and Vale as his own. Rather than die in defiance, our barbarian ancestor turned against the other mountain clans and led his people to the invaders, swearing allegiance. Since then, our House had carried his name with pride and served loyally.

However, our past has been full of tragedy. We have suffered great famine in the distant past but more recently, we've been plagued with a more serious problem: Bastards. As the superstition goes, a bastard of Harrock is born a traitor and each one is destined to bring great shame to the house. During Aegon's conquest of Westeros, one such bastard tried to betray the Vale to the invading Targaryens and dragged our noble house's name into the dirt. That is not even the most recent treachery, however.

During the War of the Usurper, our venerable father died in battle beside Lord Jon Arryn himself. While we were willing to fight on and persevere, our bastard brother lost his hope. Ulfir Stone was his name and taking almost our entire garrison with him, the bastard traitor led and assault intended to cripple the forces of Arryn on the march of the Battle of the Trident. We are fortunate that he was an inexperienced commander and that our ravens flew faster than his army travelled - we warned Jon Arryn and in exchange, he routed the army of Ulfir Stone. Unfortunately, the bastard's corpse was never found and we have been left to rebuild our great house from the very bottom.

It is six months after Robert Baratheon was crowned king and we are Ser Artys Harrock, thirty-eight years old and as seen in the image above. We're a dedicated, devoted and cunning man, eager to see the rebirth and stability of our house from its ruined state. With a head for numbers, a good swordhand and an exotic Valyrian steel saber called 'Stone,' we shall lead our family to new wealth and new prosperity.

With that, I apologise for the delay - I just had to make a few last preparations.

Does anyone have any questions before we begin?

(This is what I remember from the last thread). Our lands include a long stretch of river and a mountainous trade route in the Vale. We get a cut of the profits from merchants and tolls from travelers going through the area but have to defend it against the local mountain clans and our villainous bastard brother.

The Vale of Arryn has very few safe roads in and out of the region. Out of the few mountain passes that exist, most of them are infested with the mountain clans. Our duty was to defend one of the primary routes in and out of the Great Gorge, the Northern part of the Vale. This road, Westpass, is where we're situated and where we're able to extort and tax merchants who use the route. Without access to this road, they would need to travel potentially thousands of leagues around the mountains, or through unsafe land plagued by mountain clanners. In addition to this, we have a mine.

Our main economic ally - and rival - is House Belmore to the North. They control the largest island and harbour in the Great Gorge, Grimarbour. Merchants who travel through Westpass almost immediately travel to Strongsong so that they may take the boat a boat to Grimarbour and sell their product - and vice versa.

You awake on a frigid spring morning to the sound of the wind. High in the mountains, it's always bitter and cold no matter the season. A sad affair but something that cannot be helped. Rising for your bed where your wife Deyya rests, you gaze out of the window, you survey the sloping domain of your house for a few brief moments - not that there's much to see.

You only have a few minutes before a servant arrives with breakfast, a simply meal of crusty bread rolls, slightly stale by this point and a poached quail's egg - a delicacy that you afford yourself every now and again. While you consume the meal mechanically, you briefly consider what you should start the day with.

>A hunt - not for animals of course, but for mountain men. It is your duty to defend Westpass from these savages even if you descend from them.
>You did arrange to speak with your venerable uncle at some point - Alric Harrock, your castellan. He might have ideas for improving your house's situation.
>Perhaps a visit to one of your neighbours? It might take more than just the morning but a bit of diplomacy is always a good thing.
>Another option that may be preferable.
>>
>>24208320
Meet with our uncle. We need to get the House in order before riding out against the clansmen and risking ourselves in battle. After that's done maybe we can meet with a neighbor and talk them into going to battle with us.
>>
>>24208320

Let's hear Alric's suggestions.
>>
>>24208320
I'd say that we should go and speak to our esteemed uncle Alric. He might even be able to give us advice on who we would best do dealings with, when it comes to diplomacy with our neighbours.

Oh, and information on your wife.

Deyya Manderly, now Deyya Harrock. Quite a few favours had to be pulled in order to get House Manderly as a political ally - any merchant with their seal gets to pass freely through your roads without taxation. Not only that, but Deyya is not the most appealing woman. A short lass, a little too plump for your tastes and with thin, loose hair that seemed to be greying from the moment you met her. At least she is ample in a few enjoyable ways, and at least she has given you a son who carries the worst features of you both and a daughter who carries the best.
Your marriage has always been an unloving one and you're not planning on improving it soon. Maybe she'll give you another child someday. Who knows?
>>24208385
>>24208392
>>24208395
Quickly finishing the meal and dressing yourself in a faded blue doublet and worn grey breeches, you venture forth to meet with your uncle in the feast hall of your house. Rarely is anyone ever to be found in the wide stone room except for a few passing servants.

At the table awaits Alric and one of your sworn swords, Ser Morys. Your uncle a tall and gangly man with tight skin and a head of carefully groomed white hair and your knight a squat and lean fellow with more wrinkles than you care to count and an unruly mane of lank grey hair. Neither has a beard - beards are for mountain men.

Looking up at you, Alric offers a wry smile. "Artys, my boy. Good to see you. I trust you want to get down to business sooner rather than later - what would you like to discuss first? I've assembled all the available documents we have on:

>our claim on Grimarbour - I do believe your father lost it to the Belmores back in the day. Perhaps we can regain it."
>our neighbour's daughter, Lorenna Egen. She has recently come of age and is unmarried so far, as is your son."
>our connection to the Manderlys. Perhaps we can get a few favours from them."
>"Or perhaps something else?"
>>
>>24208641

>our neighbour's daughter, Lorenna Egen. She has recently come of age and is unmarried so far, as is your son."

Alliances are the lifeblood of any house worth their salt. Thrive together or die alone.
>>
>>24208641
I don't think we want to go around trying to take land off our neighbours just yet - if our claim is legitimate, it will keep.

As for Lorenna Egen... is she the best we could hope to get for our son? Or would it make sense for us to wait until we can get a better match?

Still... becoming close allies with House Egen might be a good idea, as we might, together, be able to gain power over Belmore, putting us in a better position for us to regain our land from them.
>>
>>24208641
What is the state of the Belmore family? Are they strong right now or weak? Are their children available or married away? Have they been beset by the mountain clans?
>>
>>24208766
Aye, a little more information on both the Belmore and the Egen Houses wouldn't go amiss, if we are to secure the best match possible for our son.
>>
>>24208732
>>24208743
With a nod, your uncle and castellan continues while Ser Morys listens in a sober fashion.
"House Egen has become quite important as of late - although Loras Egen is a selfish, stubborn man, his brother is Ser Vardis, Captain of the Guard at the Eyrie. He proved himself to be quite a capable soldier at the Battle of the Trident and gained the favour of Jon Arryn by doing so. It would be useful to have a strong alliance with such a fellow. Unfortunately, Loras Egen is quite an ambitious lord no matter how incompetent he may be. He will likely see a greater ally through his daughter..."

Hesitating briefly, your uncle continues.
"Not only that, but Loras Egen also possesses a son who shall inherit the land. There is an opportunity here, if Lorenna carries your grandson and Loras Egen has no son of his own to call his heir upon his death bed. What I am implying is unpleasant... but it is for the glory of House Harrock, you understand?"
>>
>>24208907

Interesting. Gentlemen, will we engage in such intrigue? Or will we attempt to remain within the bounds of honor.

I vote we pursue the marriage, but hold off on underhanded measures. For now.
>>
>>24208793
>>24208766
"Lord Benedar Belmore, second of his name, is quite a brilliant man. I dare say he may rival you when it comes to stewardship and mercantile excellence. Unfortunately, he squanders it on great feasts and displays of wealth. He's a vain and envious glutton of a man and rumour says that he's quite craven to boot. He has quite a few children, along with a knighted brother and a sister who married Ronnel Arryn, Jon's deceased brother. I am unsure whether their alliance still holds, as Ronnel died quite some time ago."
>>
>>24208907
I agree with >>24208947, let's pursue the idea of marriage, given that House Egen sounds as if it is on the rise, and we could move up with it. However... it might be wise to leave off the idea of 'accidents' until later, it'd be too obvious to do straight away.

How is House Egen's relationship with Belmore? Would they work with us to reduce their influence to our mutual benefit?
>>
>>24208907
We shouldn't be hasty. I don't think assassinating a rival lord would be a good idea this early on, we're very vulnerable right now. Maybe we could gain favor with him by getting some favors - maybe by fighting a troublesome mountain clan with them. Get in favor with them and then make a move.
>>24208976
Let's explore the present state of their relationship to the Arryns. Maybe Ser Mortys could escort a shipment of luxury foods to celebrate someone in the family's next nameday as a cover for the move.
>>
>>24208907
>Not only that, but Loras Egen also possesses a son who shall inherit the land.
Sounds like a job for a bastard.
>>
>>24209017

If the marraige could be used to seal such a mutually beneficial alliance, all the better. When is the next opportunity to meet with the Egans? Perhaps a Tourney or Feast.
>>
>>24209047
I like the cut of your gibe.
>>
>>24209069

Considering our track record with Bastards, he will likely simply betray us to the Egans and then lead Lord Arryn's army to wipe us out.
>>
>>24209020
I like your second idea - we need to get a better view on the intra-House relationships, so we know how to best exploit the situation for our own benefit.

>>24209051
We aren't known for feasts, which I imagine might make our hosting one all the more exclusive. An excellent idea, if we invite our noble friends the Egens, Belmore and Arryns. Perhaps even the Manderlys, so we do not snub our wife's family.

>>24209047
Or a mountain clan... it's less linked to us that way.
>>
>>24209083
Does he really have to be a bastard, though? Why can't he be a "bastard"? Freeriders are common in the Vale. Give an unlanded knight a few yards of silk and a shirt of mail, feign our innocence, and nobody knows the difference.
>>24209095
I think organizing a feast would be wise. Maybe to celebrate the nameday of some lord's daughter or something.
>>
>>24209095

I'd like to see the Manderleys come that far. I had not thought of hosting the feast, but it seems a perfect opportunity to gauge the political climate first hand. I am all for it.
>>
>>24208947
>>24209017
Browsing through the various documents at his disposal, your uncle Alric nods along and makes a few notes.
"Very well, Artys. While it is not the most beneficial match, it is important that we make strong ties with our neighbours. Will you like to offer Lord Loras the proposal personally or shall I have Maester Llelewyn send a raven?"
>>24209017
"House Egen primarily trades in lumber and fruit from their forests. Quite a few of our own structures are built with Egen pine. They split their trade between House Harrock and House Belmore. We own Westpass which is the closest road out of the Vale but Belmore owns Grimarbour. If the Egens lose our favour - or the favour of House Belmore - then their economy is crippled."
>>
>>24209143

The aforementioned feast seems a perfect opportunity to make the proposal in person. We can even use our continued favor as leverage considering their economic reliance on us.
>>
>>24209143
A brilliant idea! It would also make it harder for them to refuse, if we do it in person at the feast.

Here's an idea: Let's publicly declare our intention to make a campaign on the mountain clans that beset the lands of Houses Harrock, Egen, and Belmore by hosting a grand feast and tourney to draw in other lords and freeriders to come to us, as well as some members of our good-father's family, Manderly. This could give us all the support we need to quash the menace of the mountain men. Privately, we could test the waters for a marriage and possible offer it as an incentive to the House to support us best.
>>24209139
White Harbor isn't that far from the Vale - check out pic related and compare the distance from there to King's Landing. Ser Wyman recently fought in Robert's Rebellion and may enjoy a journey at sea, and he's known for his love of feasts.

"While this is a wise suggestion, it is also a great risk Artys. Our house is extremely low on funds. We can barely afford to maintain our garrisons at this moment in time. Perhaps after saving our income across a few months we could safely afford it but at this moment in time, our treasury could buckle beneath the strain."

In terms of mechanics, a feast would cost you 5 Wealth. You can host a feast anyway but if you do, it will make this month's House Fortune roll a -5. In short, far more likely that bad things will occur.

Is it worth the risk?
>>
>>24209233
I entirely agree with this! It gives us the opportunity to combat the mountain clans, engage in diplomacy, and help our economy all at once!

And even if Ser Wyman declines to come, it is always good to be seen as respectful of our family to the North.
>>
>>24209256
Hmm... in that case, might it be worth working on our economy this month, before then hosting our feast and all the other stuff? We could send out the invitations now though, so people do not find other things to do.

Improving our economy would also make us look more suitable as an ally to the Egen too.
>>
>>24209233
>>24209139
"Regarding the Manderlys, we could potentially call upon their financial aid in our situation. Perhaps they would deem us worthy of a loan - if we use said gold wisely and pay back the debt at expediently, we might even be able to impress them and solidify our relationship with your in-laws."
>>
>>24209256
Not yet. Let's engage in some smaller activities to generate more funds with the tourney and feast as our ultimate goal. We could go ahead and start making our intentions known to our neighbors and maybe have our Maester send a raven to White Harbor to let them know we have something in mind.

What is the state of our fields and forests? We should look into planting a cash crop or selling lumber to the Belmores (offering the Egens compensation later on if they complain).
>>
>>24209303
That could work, though I don't get the impression that Ser Manderly is overly fond of us.
>>
>>24209323
"We have no forests and very few crops grow here. The soil is poor and infertile at very little grows at this height. What woodland we have is sparse and scattered and what supplies we have are obtained through hunting and through our scattered serfs down at the riverbank, who maintain small apple orchards and goat farms. That is, if the mountain men don't pillage their homes first. Most of our food has to be imported in order to feed our men adequately."

>>
>>24209432
I just realized something. Geographically we aren't far from Braavos... where the Iron Bank is located. Maybe we could seek out a small loan to cover the expenses of the feast.

Or hiring some freeriders to help us oust the mountain men from our lands. On top of the gold paid them, we could offer them land and serfs in exchange for their allegiance and service in battle. A successful campaign against our own wildlings could open the doors to a larger one in the future. How do the costs for sending a ship to Braavos and hiring sellswords and freeriders compare to that of sending a ship to Braavos to organize a feast and tourney?
>>24209460
Indeed. How old are Ser Manderly's sons? They could be up to fighting some wildlings, especially if we offer them a knighting in the process.
>>
>>24209479
I like this one the best. How did you make them?

>>24209460
In that case, definitely send the invitation to Ser Manderly - it isn't right that he be a stranger to us.

I think we should work on exporting our exceptional iron, rock and coal further, and therefore filling our coffers from the wealth of the mountains themselves.
>>
>>24209509
"Ser Wylis and Ser Wendel are in their early twenties and have both been knighted already, I am afraid. I am unsure whether this decision was made out of devotion to the Seven or out of pragmatism. Hopefully your son will achieve his own knighthood soon..."

For the first time, Ser Morys speaks out.
"If Brock was as good a squire as he is a pugilist, I would've knighted your boy already. He cares more about beating other lads into bloody messes than he cares for chivalry... And I wouldn't be surprised if he cares even less for ruling, m'lord."

Alric continues.
"As for Braavos, I doubt they would offer as good a deal as your relatives... But without any doubt, they'd offer more than them. The Iron Bank of Braavos is bottomless."
>>
>>24209647
Some military service will straighten the boy out. I think we should send him along with Ser Morys and some men-at-arms to see how our smallfolk are doing and how long it's been since the mountain clans raided them. How old is our son? If he's young enough he could be squired somewhere. Stannis Baratheon of Dragonstone could teach to love to rule.

Would it cost more to host a feast or to hire some sellswords?
>>
>>24209671
It depends on the training.

Green mercenaries would cost you 1 Wealth.
Trained would cost you 3.
Veteran would cost you 5.
Elite would cost you 7.

Each unit comes in hundreds - and as you don't have housing for them, each unit would give you a -1 modifier on your next House Fortune roll.

>>
>>24209719
Oh, and I might as well detail your current forces:

You have five hundred soldiers, in total.
You have a garrison of a hundred guards to protect Wetrock, a tower based down by your river to keep watch over the wetlands.
You have a garrison of a hundred guards to protect Highcliff, a second tower that is based on the highest peak in your territory to overlook Westpass.
You have a hundred green archers who defend High Harrock, your castle. Many of them are out of training and out of practice, as few clansmen dare assault your stronghold.
Finally, you have two hundred rangers, half of whom are dedicated to mountain warfare and another half of whom are practised at stalking the wetlands. These are your mancatchers, your hunters of clansmen who sweep the wilderness for bandits and other nastiness.

You also have three sworn swords:
Ser Morys, a true knight gone bitter, old and wrinkled. He is less of a fighter and more of a commander.
Ser Tenry, a ranger who Ser Morys personally knighted for his skill in guerilla warfare and his impromptu leadership when Morys was injured.
Ser Boros, a foreign knight from the Westerlands. You're not sure he's actually a knight, but you haven't seen a man who's better with a spear.

A quick edit of mine I made, since I had to fix a few details - your wife Deyya is actually Wyman Manderly's sister. You've been married for seventeen years now, and your boy Brock is fifteen.
>>24209744
"We don't have a clear idea, Artys. We can send the rangers to do a sweep of the territory - these days they're more focused on defending our existing territory than harassing the clansmen, when we send them out."
>>
>>24209837
Small and Blue, I think.

>>24209826
In that case, send Brock with Ser Tenry and the hundred mountain rangers, to teach our son how real combat is fought. I think it would be best to send Tenry as he is one of the rangers, and the one most suited to teach our son the ways of the mountain.

Small size. Same color as the mountain. It'll contrast with the white background and towers.

>>24209826
Excellent. How many wildlings do we have to deal with? If we don't know, can we send out Brock with Ser Tenry, some of his rangers, and some hundred of our archers (to get them used to marching) to find that out for us? They could also collect a tax from our smallfolk if we haven't taken one recently. Maybe we could send Ser Mortys as well to ensure Brock's safety while also marshalling the green archers.

Aye, let's do this. Get our archers some more experience, and have Ser Tenry teach out son how combat works, with Ser Mortys keeping an eye on him.

Ser Morys bows his head.
"It'll be done, m'lord. I'll give you a report on the clansmen and their numbers by the end of the week. Ser Tenry and I shall lead the mountain rangers and your contingent of archers in this endeavour; they need the exercise. I'll make sure that Brock joins us. In addition to this, I'll have Ser Boros patrol the wetlands with the river rangers, hopefully that should prevent any raids."

Leaving the room to arrange this, Ser Morys leaves you and your uncle to your discussion, turning to you, Alric pushes himself to his feet.
"I hope this endeavour shall be success. Is there anything else you wish to discuss Artys? I understand if you would rather wait until we have the results of this search; you have always erred on the cautious side."

Sorry guys, I have to leave for a family dinner for a few hours. I'll be back in hopefully less than three hours. I may try to post from my phone, but we'll see what happens.

May your feast be a good one, ser knight! Have a good evening!

>>24209953
I think we should perhaps wait until we have gained a better idea of the numbers we face in regards to the bandits and clans. Once we know, we can make more informed decisions.

Have the maester send a raven to the Manderlys though, to inform them that we might be holding a feast soon, so that they can ensure they have time to sail across to attend.
>>
>>24209985

I agree with this, and have returned from my own feast.

Intelligence is vital. How may we assess the mountain clan's strength?
>>
>>24209985
Offering a half-bow, Alric makes his exit and hobbles outside to do his duties. You are left on your own in the vast, grey feast hall of your castle, colourless light streaming in through the windows to provide light. There's no need to waste candles in a time of poverty like this.

What do you plan to do with your time, beside counting your coins and keeping a close eye on your treasury? You are your own steward, after all.

I would also have him draft letters to our neighboring lords telling them that we are about to kick the proverbial hornets' nest, ask them if they want to aid hunting the mountain men or warning them that if we drive the clans from our lands they may show up on our neighbors' doorsteps.

You head to your Maester's tower and are immediately confronted by the smell of bird shit. It is hardly a pleasant location, full of ravens that Maester Llelewyn seems to prefer to humans. Oh well, at least he's a dedicated man and that is something that you can empathise with, when the Riverlander isn't poring over books and knowledge. He's a rake thin man, roughly the same age as you but far worse off for it, a gaunt and ugly man. Thankfully you cannot see much of him in his dim, stony abode as you discuss the matters of trade with him.

"Ah, my lord. I'm afraid that our primary export - our only export - is iron. The mines beneath our castle produce quite a substantial amount of the metal. We tend to export the ore to House Egen, House Frey, House Erenford and House Terrick. Meanwhile, House Belmore supplies us with leather and cheeses, House Frey provides us with bread and House Egen with fruit and lumber. Even combined with our road tax, we make little profit - our house is far too reliant on trade for its survival in this barren land, my lord."

Sorry for delay - had a few things to take care of, I'm afraid.
>>
>>24210151
Ser William Bordain has only come to the Vale six months ago, as a brand new lord - he has not left his castle since his arrival and his people are rebelling against him. No wonder why, he is a loathsome individual.

Remember, the year is 284 - six months after the war. House Bordain only starts to move into action two years after the war.
>>
>>24210298

Suggestions for avenues to increase our prosperity, Maester?
>>
>>24210346
"We could increase our road tax, but that brings obvious risks with it my lord. My personal suggestion is that we try to become a self-sufficient house and make his land arable and fertile. However, that would be a long-term investment and take quite some time... And it won't be possible while the mountain clans are still such a large thread. We cannot create infrastructure if the savages seek to destroy it every turn! I hope you understand, my lord."
>>
>>24210346
Just an idea of mine; do we have the funds to start our own trading caravans? Or, perhaps, to fund the creation of a trading company? While it would at first be a large drain on our finances, we could theoretically become rich without actually making a move.

Long-term plan for the plentiful number of bastards that we have could be:

First, make overtures to the Faith of the Seven as well as our Lord Arryn (the Hand's influence will come in handy) that we want to help establish a centre for higher learning and religious studies in our lands. Once this is established, take advantage of the agricultural knowledge and technology generated by this centre to supplement our wealth.

Create an order of knights known as the Sons of the Vale. Draft much of the troublesome bastards into the Sons, kind of a like a second Nightswatch. Use the church facilities we created before to educate as well as train the Sons into an educated paladin order--which are technically not part of the Faith, circumventing their military ban. Send out our well-trained knights into the field in questing bands alongside higher-ranking Septons, dispensing the King's law and acquiring valuable military experience. Further grow the strength of the Sons until they become a vital military asset.

Give us a decade, and we've got an order of powerful paladins that are force to be reckoned with.

Pic-related, it's our Sons of the Vale.
>>
>>24210395
In this case, it seems our best course of action is to continue our war against them, or force them to bend the knee.

The lands that are ours by right, the lands currently controlled by the Belmore... what are they like? Are they fertile lands, or more wetland and mountain?
>>
>>24210397
Not a bad idea, but as you say, it's a very long-term plan.
>>
>>24210397

This is interesting, though I feel such paramilitary groups may attract unwanted attention, if not from our Liege Lord than perhaps from the crown itself.
>>
>>24210395

Sounds like we need to go about culling the Mountain Tribes.
>>
>>24210397
I'm uncertain as to whether that would be a great idea; while it would certainly pay off long-term, there are few people who would be willing to train bastards and who belong to the church.
>>
>>24210412

You know, it would be a shame if some Mountain Men who definitely have no connection to us whatsoever started raiding Caravans run by Belmore.

It would be an ever greater shame if we found all that loot in a cavern where Mountain Men where hiding out, and claimed it as spoils. We didn't put it there, no sir.
>>
>>24210396
You do not have the infrastructure to support a guild at the moment - you need a small town or a larger community, which you currently lack. Your only communities exist inside of your castle and your towers - outside of these fortified structures there are only scattered huts, where serfs try to live in constant fear of raids.
>>
>>24210395

So what you're saying is we need to weed these /bastards/ from our lands. Well, we are already sending men into the field to take care of the problem.
>>24210097
We should coordinate with our neighbors in this endeavor, lest the mountain men merely flee our lands temporarily, returning to infest their haunt anew once our troops return to garrison duty.
>>
>>24210451

We could, in the event of victory over the Mountainers, direct them elsewhere to raid...
>>
>>24210442
>>24210448

It's all about cultivating a legacy. As a smaller house, we're rather insignificant and an open target for the larger powerbases to gobble us up. If we lash our cart to the Faith of the Seven, though, and create a second Rome of sorts here, not only will we be able to ride out any of the craziness time throws our way, we can create a centre of great power. By performing great deeds with a secondary military force we ostensibly shepherd, under the auspices of the Faith, enforcing the will of the King, we court the attention and the affection of the two most powerful entities on Westeros, as well as endear ourselves to our Lord Arryn, who is known to be an honest and faithful knight.
>>
>>24210464
>>24210445
It could be a good idea for us to go with Ser Boros and the wetland rangers, show our face to our people and strike out against the bandits.
>>
>>24210505

Its a good plan, if risky, but we lack the resources to even begin it as of yet. First, the mountain men.

After we handle the mountain clans and make things safer for our serfs, we should get goats for food and wool. Goats love mountains.

>>24210505
We are going to need to become a lot stronger to do that though. Once other houses realise what's up they are going to want to shut it down. Even our liege lord would probably take action.
>>
>>24210467
I agree with the second bit - we should tell our neighbours that we plan to war with the clans once more, and ask if they wish to join us in claiming spoils and safeguarding our homes and people.
>>
>>24210412
"Grimarbour is the only Belmore land that we have claim on... Although perhaps with the right resources and information we might be able to, ah, invent separate claims on other lands." The rakish Maester bares his teeth in a gruesome smile. "Grimarbour is quite a large town indeed and is the hub of House Belmore's trading - they even build a few ships there. They have a small mainland port called Blackford and nestled in a mountains, a little village known as Belham. Their fortress of Strongsong is isolated on its own island and is quite impenetrable. Outside of these territories, they have only mountains - very little in the way of forests or fields. They seem to rely on fishing and goat herding, my lord."
>>

I agree, let Stone taste some barbarian blood, let the men of the mountain fear the wrath of Harrock!
>>
>>24210527

>>
>>24210469

But my friend, what if we needed more men to cull the Mountain Tribes?

Hear me out, gentlemen.

We declare our intent to purge the Men of the Mountain, just as men who have no affiliation to us whatsoever begin launching raids on Belmore lands.

If these raids provoked Belmore into aiding us, well, that would be a nice bonus.

>>24210532
this. We should plan an offensive against the clans to make things easier for ourselves and for the prestige. Gotta make sure we get most of the credit though.

>>
>>24210538
They definitely won't give up Grimarbour then, if it is the centre of their trading system. We will only lay our claim to it once we have removed the barbarians from our lands, and perhaps redirected them towards Belmore...

In that case, only warn House Egen as to our plans to war with the mountain clans. If the barbarians flee to Belmore lands, well... it looks like they might have killed our raven on it's way to Strongsong, which is very unfortunate...
>>
>>24210563
or better yet, we let the raid Belmore lands first and then we ride to the rescue.
>>
>>24210577

>>24210577

Not bad. I see no way for this to come back to us, unless Belmore is absolutely set on blaming us for it.
>>
>>24210596
And put them in our debt? That would be nice.

But of course, we would arrive too late to stop the merchants being attacked, but we would arrive in time to save their lives, and inform them of how our lands are so much safer than Belmore's.

>>
>Three, thought Davos, though I fathered seven. “Soon I must return to the feast to toast my friends of Frey,” Manderly continued. “They watch me, ser. Day and night their eyes are on me, noses sniffing for some whiff of treachery. You saw them, the arrogant Ser Jared and his nephew Rhaegar, that smirking worm who wears a dragon’s name. Behind them both stands Symond, clinking coins. That one has bought and paid for several of my servants and two of my knights. One of his wife’s handmaids has found her way into the bed of my own fool. If Stannis wonders that my letters say so little, it is because I dare not even trust my maester. Theomore is all head and no heart. You heard him in my hall. Maesters are supposed to put aside old loyalties when they don their chains, but I cannot forget that Theomore was born a Lannister of Lannisport and claims some distant kinship to the Lannisters of Casterly Rock.

>Foes and false friends are all around me, Lord Davos. They infest my city like roaches, and at night I feel them crawling over me.” The fat man’s fingers coiled into a fist, and all his chins trembled. “My son Wendel came to the Twins a guest. He ate Lord Walder’s bread and salt, and hung his sword upon the wall to feast with friends. And they murdered him. Murdered, I say, and may the Freys choke upon their fables. I drink with Jared, jape with Symond, promise Rhaegar the hand of my own beloved granddaughter … but never think that means I have forgotten. The North remembers, Lord Davos. The North remembers, and the mummer’s farce is almost done. My son is home.”

Your mine is 3-4~% of the Vale's iron production at most and those who buy from you likely buy from other sources as well - you just don't produce enough. Perhaps adequate investment, you could improve that however.
>>24210656
You pay a brief visit to little Katrin, who is being taught in sewing with a few other girls by her mother. At least your wife makes herself useful in your household - she's quite the social butterfly and always involves herself with the education of the castle's youth and the chattering of wives.
Your daughter is the best of both worlds. With the fair hair and bright eyes of the Manderlys and the wiry, fit physique of House Harrock, the lass is going to grow up to be a beauty and an asset to the house. She's a quick learner too, obedient and intelligent. You couldn't wish for a better child - if only Brock was more like her.
You're shot a scathing look by your wife when you greet your daughter, but she simply rushes up to you to embrace you. You quietly chatter about all of the things she's learning from her mother and it doesn't take too long for Deyya to shoo you away - you're distracting your child and you have better things to do. After all, you are a lord.

Hmm.... Ser Boros is exceptional with a spear, but he likely knows the Westflow better than us, and so would be better at directing our men.

From the array of armour available to you, you select the hard leather. While there is a chance of combat, it is a reconnaisance mission and you are travelling with your rangers - you'd rather not give them away by clanking around if your armour.

You leave with Ser Boros, a short lad with dark skin. Quite young but he uses a spear like no other - you suspect that the boy is likely Dornish, barely out of his teens. He leads you along with your rangers to a very specific tributary stream South of the Westflow. Only two days ago a hovel was found in this area, burned to the ground and the sheep kept there nowhere to seen. Hunkering down near the ruined structure, you wait for any sign of the clansmen as you hide in the long grass, crouching in the mud.

One hour passes, then another. You begin to doubt the judgement of Ser Boros but when the third hour comes, so do to the clansmen. Brutish savages stumbling down from the hills towards the river, looking to cross. They're on the other side.

No signal from Ser Boros - you gave him authority on this mission, so for now, you and the rest of the rangers remain hidden.

I want a roll of 2d6-2. I'll accept the SECOND roll.

>>
>>24211122
>>24211122
Huh. That function doesn't seem to work - ah well.

In any case, the rouse doesn't last long. You never were skilled at the art of stealth and you're not sure whether they spotted you or perhaps another more clumsy ranger. However, one of the savages cries out and points towards your force and the others join him in a savage, bloodthirsty cry. The clansmen begin their charge, rushing into the flowing stream and wading through it towards you.

"Stand and fight, men! Until the last ridge!"

With that call from Ser Boros, you push yourselves to your feet and prepare for combat, readying their long swords as they brace for the charge of the mountain men. And you are amongst them, staring into the face of these wild raiders as they stream across the flowing water in a great horde.

Roll 3d6-2 for initiative!

Indeed, you get to go first.

With a shield in one hand and Ambition in the other, you gaze at the ragtag band in front of you. A shrieking women wearing little more than rags, armed with a slender yet vicious spear. A big brute of a man with a great heavy mattock, wearing the hide of a slain shadowcat - he seems to have white snakes painted on to his skin with some sort of paste. And last of the savages within range is a skinny lad, little older than your son with a battleaxe clutched in both hands, wearing loose-fitting hides draped over his body.

You're able to move forward and meet them or stand back for a counter-attack - they're even close enough together that you can divide your attacks between them.

So, what would you like to do?
>>
>>24211245
Remember that these Guerillas are /Marksmen/ they should have at least a volley out.
>>
>>24211366

Stand our ground. We fight with smarts, not brutality.
>>
>>24211366
As >>24211384 said, wait for them to charge through the water, tiring them, before launching a counter-charge, allowing our rangers to get off a volley of arrow fire before we meet them in close combat.
>>
>>24211369
They were caught off-guard - and they're diverse, they're not just marksmen. Perhaps you can scold Ser Boros later.
>>24211412
>>24211384
You stand your ground. You're not the ones charging through the water, they are. They have to wade through the mud and the filth at the bottom of the water, stumbling closer and closer until you can see the whites of their eyes. More than enough time the men at the front to nock their arrows.

The savage woman you spotted suddenly launches her spear, skewering the thigh of the soldier next to you and causing him to scream, falling on to his back in the mud. Only a second later, the bitch is skewered with more arrows than you care to count and she falls back into the water a corpse. A few arrow bury themselves into the barbarian wearing the shadowcat hide but he shrugs them off, almost in the face of one of the soldiers beside you. It's that boy, that lad with the battleaxe who is intent on you. Screaming bloody murder, the mountain boy is almost on top of you. You can hear your comrades draw steel.

Choose your next action carefully.

Launch a counter-charge against the boy, shield in front and Ambition held high.

A cautious attack, then - roll 3d6 as you strike at the mountain boy, careful not to expose yourself. Temper ambition with caution for success.

I'll accept the first roll.
>>
Rolled 4, 6, 4 = 14

>>24211646
>>
>>24211676
Not bad at all!
>>
>>24211676
The best result you could've hoped for - a killing blow. You score three degrees of success and due to your skill with long blades, you get to add on an extra degree - this means you do four times your base damage, which is more than enough to kill the lad.

Rather than write this out, I'm going to allow you guys to describe the glory of the kill - you earned it.
>>
>>24211726

Dodging the boy's clumsy swing, Artys bashes his extended arms, sending the battle axe from his hands. With a spinning follow up swing, the razor edge of Ambition severs the young man's head, spattering gore across the chest piece of Lord Harrow's leather armor. His body falls limp, twitching like a stuck pig.
>>
>>24210997

Artys kneed him in the crotch then proceeded beheaded him in one clean slice.
>>
>>24211806
I am an Illiterate Bastard.

Ignore me.
>>
>>24211726
Artys strode forward, Ambition held high above his head as he led the charge down the bank towards the barbarians of the mountain clans, fresh from their raiding throughout his lands. They would set an example for the others, that House Harrock would no longer lie dormant, allowing them to kill his people. Now, they would pay for their arrogance with blood and death.

"For Harrock!" Artys shouted as he closed on the barbarian, a boy no older than his own son, who right now might also be facing the clans up in the mountains above him. The boy lunged at him, but lost his footing on the wet rocks of the bank, opening himself up for a clean slash from Ambition that cut clean through his neck, sending the boys head tumbling from his shoulders, landing at Artys' feet as his body collapsed at the sudden loss, falling backwards into the flowing river.

Today, the barbarians would know fear.

Beheading Mind.
>>
>>24211726
Shortly after the carcass of the quivering boy falls down to the floor, a whirling projectile comes flying through the air and strikes you in your exposed shoulder, splitting the hard leather and leaving a nasty little wound there. You see the ugly one-eyed bastard who threw the knife charging forward towards you and beside him, a foul-looking crone with a wicked spear. She tries to strike at you, but the speartip easily deflects off of your shield.

Your men are fighting hard and fighting well, enduring the brunt of the charge and responding in kind, pushing the mountain scum back into the mud and the water. You are currently being assaulted by a foul crone with a spear and a one-eyed arsehole who is currently unarmed, reaching for another knife.

What do you wish to try and do?
>>
>>24211878

Slay the unarmed man before defending ourselves form the other assailant.
>>
>>24211878
Can we try and attack them both?
>>
>>24211897
>>24211910
Attacking them both is possible, albeit a little more difficult. Is there any deciding vote?
>>
>>24211878
Kill the crone first, the man is busy getting a knife, and so isn't the immediate danger.
>>
>>24211897
I vote for this.
>>
>>24211939

The unarmed man first, then we can focus on the other.
>>

I'll go with this then!

All right then! That's a 3d6 again, as a cautious attack.

>>
>>24211990
It's actually a hit, due to the heavy hides that the savage is wearing - unfortunately, the heavy animal furs absorb almost all of the blow. You barely managing to slash through the layers and bury Ambition into the unarmed berk's meaty shoulder before tugging it out.

One of your men beside you administers the killing blow to the savage. Already, the raiders are beginning to break their ranks and scatter, running in separate directions and trying to escape from the carnage. Launching a crude blow at you, the ugly crone only manages to strike your shield before she turns to run, scrambling with the blood and the water and the mud to try and escape the crazed carnage. The mountain clansmen are routed and running for their lives.

What do you feel like doing at this point?
>>
>>24212015
That's bloody amazing, mate. Thank you so much for doing this.
>>
>>24212099

Pursue them. I want prisoners. But pull back before too long, annihilation is unnecessary just now.
>>
>>24212099
Run down all but one of the savages - let one return to tell of their deaths at our hand, and let them quake in fear.
>>
>>24212099

Try to take one alive and make him talk where their camps are.
>>
>>24212126
Actually, do this, but let one return to his people to tell them of our massacre of their raiders.
>>
>>24212099
If they are all out of arms reach, get the archers to aim for the legs. Lets take some prisoners home
>>
>>24212126
>>24212128
The faster, cleverer ones manage to flee downstream, running into the wilderness. Many get shot down, but a few manage to escape into the wilderness especially once you make the request. A handful of injured, mutilated mountain men are captured, although they're kicking and screaming all the way. Once the battle is done, Ser Boros brings them before you. A giant of a man with his beard braided into his earrings, a runty dwarf of a man, a filthy boy with a missing ear and a lanky, pale woman with a disgusting birthmark covering most of her face.

"M'lord, here are the captives. Victory's ours, what do you want done with the captures?"
>>
someone better archive this
>>
>>24212187
Take them back to the tower - we will make them talk, and tell us where their camps are, before we execute them for the murderous scum they are.
>>
>>24212187

Interrogation. We gather intelligence off of them. Tell Boros we don't care what he does with them afterwards, eyeing the woman.
>>
>>24212187
chuck some strong restraints on them. If we lack those, break their weapon arms. Either way they are coming home and telling us some juicy secrets
>>
>>24212199
It'll be auto-archived on foolz, but yea, might be worth someone archiving it on sup/tg/.
>>
>>24212226

As is usual for Quests.

I'd handle it, but I am pretty drunk and do not trust myself to avoid typos.
>>
>>24212222
>>24212210
>>24212209
No restraints, so their arms are broken and they're taken back to the tower for their interrogation.

If anyone wants to archive this on suptg, that's your choice. For now though, I'm done - it's 3AM over here and I'm exhausted.

When should we continue though? Every Friday? Part of me was thinking every Friday and every Monday.
>>
>>24212248

What works for you works for me, I can divide my attentions between this and Demi Quest readily enough.
>>
Just got in the thread, and I'm very surprised there's not more ASOIAF quests on /tg/

They just match the quest idea perfectly
>>

Friday and Monday works for me! 9pm GMT again? I'm on my phone, but I'll try and archive it.

as stated in the OP or somewhere else near the top there were another 2 but they are on hiatus at the moment.
