>"Assume for a moment that you're not qualified to fly -- it may happen, after all. Would you be interested in assisting this endeavor in another capacity?"

Dame, Nicole Dunham
>A bored Heiress, ate the posh food, Joining for the novelty.
"If I don't get to fly? I'm sure a lady of my wealth and taste could find some way to assist the Corps."
>"Would you say it's because of the novelty, or because of the fact that there is a competition?"
"I hadn't considered that" She pauses for a moment or two "I suppose it's as much competition as novelty, If I do get into space, my spiteful cousins are sure to be jealous." She grins.

Sir, Geoffrey Curteys
"Oh I know I'd just end up doing the same clerical work I've always done..."

Dame, Anne Lytton
"I don't plan on failing your highness."
>"Later on we should tell you about Prof. Minerva and the Astrologers..."
"Oh???"

Sir, Jonathon Waleys
"I said before, I'll do whatever the crown requires of me."

Sir, Lettice Sadler

Sir, Christopher Grenefeld
"Then I'll keep trying until I do get to go up. I'm sure you'll have use for regular pilots until then."

Dame, Kateryn Cobham
"I aint goin anywear your highness. I'll scrub latrines if that's what it takes to stay here."

Sir, Harry Hawtrey
"I'm sure the corps can always need another alchemist. I've actually been doing some experiments of my own on rapid oxidation.'
>Does Minerva know of him?
"I've read one of his Treatise, that man might have less regard for his own life than Harker."

Dame, Elizabeth Palmer
"I suppose I could help from the earth, guiding the other void knights like a lighthouse, back home and around the rocks... so to speak."

Sir, Charles Harker
"I'd rightly deserve it. And it would force me to pay more attention to my responsibilities back on earth, and to realize my original dream before it became entangled so firmly in yours, your highness."

Lord Protector, Alejandro Perro
"My duty is already to protect you here on earth your highness."

You are Princess Lydia Tannhäuser Von Cygnus Gates the third, duchess of Tannhäuser and executive director of the Royal Rocketry Corps of Midland. Currently you are entertaining 12 possible candidates to be the first man in space. They have already finished the first test, a swim across the lagoon while wearing a mockup of the prototype space suit, and now you are testing how quickly they can adapt to strange situations by having them attend a formal dinner while still dressed in a soaking wet spacesuit.

Very good.
They all appear to be able to handle themselves when it comes to handling strange situations.

We should perhaps move on to the more intellectually rigorous portion of the tournament.
They must be able to complete complex ballistic orbital calculations. We will also require of them to manipulate a mock-up control panel for a re-entry burn while underwater and in the suits.

Then, of course, we will require of them to perform manual dexterity and spatial puzzle solving while in micro-gravity.
>>
>>24231175
Maybe we should test their dancing skills briefly before moving on to the puzzles...but I don't really mind either way.

Dame Palmer, Dame Lytton, Sir Waleys and Sir Harker and my personal favorites at the moment.
>>
>>24231294
>Harry Hawtrey

He might be an asset for the science team, but gods know we shouldn't let him anywhere near a rocket.
>>
>>24231294

I mostly agree, although the "I'd scrub latrines" line resonates with me.

Some simulation testing is a must, yes, but the main test is going to be being able to stay awake under acceleration -- our guidance systems aren't that hot and they may have to actually steer the rocket up and the capsule down to a degree.
>>
While you are entertaining the champions, a private enters the room, and whispers something to one of the honor guards, who then gestures to you that you and Colonel Smith's attentions are needed outside.
>>
>>24231553
We quietly excuse ourselves from the lunch/dinner and proceed outside then.
>>
>>24231553
We shall excuse ourselves and find out what is going on.

"Private Higgens reporting Your highness, There are intruders landing on the west beach in canoes."
>>
>>24231656

We should make the situation public. These people are here to be heroes, after all.... they'll be told to not be on the front line, we have security after all, but still.

How about we allow the intruders to land, but destroy their boats?

Also, canoes... well, they can't be coming in from afar; there's likely a flying boat or a submersible waiting for them.
>>
>>24231656
"Canoes you say private? Some of the natives may have sent a scouting party...or it could be an elaborate ruse by the Huns. Send a message to the Navy informing them of our uninvited guests; then quietly gather two squads of soldiers and head these intruders off."
>>
>>24231656

Canoes? Are we being invaded by space Maori? Well no need waste a perfectly good crisis. Let's see how our void knights deal with this! Let's radio the navy and withdraw most of our security forces back to protect critical installations. Best case scenario it's some ethnic separatists staging a protest, worst it's a heavily armed incursion. Either way sending troops out to greet them is probably a bad idea
>>
>>24231714

It'll make the evening much less interesting, but we should let Sir Perro know...

There weren't any natives IIRC? It's definitely a spying party.

Get someone we trust to watch the files archive; it might well be a diversion.
>>
>>24231757

This, plus sending someone we trust implicitly (maybe have Perro handpick some guards, and say that we will lock ourselves in there if that's what it takes) defend our hard-earned research.
>>
"the report said this island was uninhabited, but there are several semi-nomadic tribes in the eastern isles, as well as a few pirate clans. Canoes dosn't seem like the Nords, but we can't be sure they aren't hostile." Col Smith explains. "Are you sure you want to send the candidates out there Your highness?"
>>
>>24231909

Let's not, but let's see what their initial reaction to the news is.
>>
>>24231909

What? God no. We just want to observe their reactions to this situation.
>>
>>24231909
God no! I'm sure at least one would try and be a hero and lead an attack on the intruders in some bizarre attempt to impress us.

Keep the candidates at lunch and in the dark.
>>
>>24232040

Not in the dark. Some of these people are former or current military.

The Colonel nods and steps back into the dining room. "Ladies and gentlemen, there are about a dozen or so intruders on the island right now, we have the situation under control and are trying to determine there intent and origin, but we believe you should know what's going on."

Dame, Nicole Dunham
>"Savages? Or pirates?"

Sir, Geoffrey Curteys
>"Oh dear..."

Dame, Anne Lytton
>Mutters something to herself.

Sir, Jonathon Waleys
>Nods sagely and narrows his eyes.

Sir, Lettice Sadler
>Cannibals I recon.

Sir, Humphrey Gerard
>"The enemy?"

Sir, Christopher Grenefeld
>"Interesting, are they natives?"

Dame, Kateryn Cobham
>"what's this then?"

Sir, Harry Hawtrey
>"Fascinating"

Dame, Elizabeth Palmer
>"Canoes you say?"

Sir, Charles Harker
>Shit eating grin.

Lord Protector, Alejandro Perro
>Frowns.
>>
>>24232138

The canoes thing is indeed suspect. We've seen them but they haven't seen us, we can round them up, walk up to them and offer a hand to shake, or stalk them.

My vote would be to stalk them while another team tows their boats away and, possibly, leaves a tow notice and assurances that they can pick them up from the harbourmaster in the morning after paying a nominal fine.

Sounds like a good idea. Under no circumstances can they be given access to secure facilities, but otherwise we lose nothing by letting them wander around.

Deploy the valets!
>>
>>24232138

"Sir Charles Harker is there any thing you and that grin have to share with the class."

(full name effect cause you know hes smiling like an idiot)

Also have the guards surround then intruders and demand they identify themselves.
>>
>>24232274

We've seen them and they haven't seen us. That's a huge tactical advantage. Let's see what they try to do. The response to a group of luddites would be different than that to a party of Hun spies.

I'm more worried about it being a diversion, honestly. Let's have someone go check on the files vault, ASAP!
>>
>>24232366
The vault is secure. Another report from the sentries tells you that there are about a dozen of them, and that they are mostly naked and armed with spears at most. If they aren't natives, they are putting on a show of being natives. They seem to be arguing with each other and pointing at the unfinished Archangel sitting on the launch pad. The sentries will engage if the cross the perimeter fence surrounding it.
>>
>>24232420

tell them not to engage with their guns. Riot shields and armor with sticks to drive them away if they must, hopefully we have somebody that can communicate with them.
>>
>>24232420

Slaughtering natives isn't going to make us any friends. Let's make sure we have a riot control team on hand in case we need to arrest them.
>>
>>24232502
>>24232447

Third this. "Is there an ethnolinguist in the space center?"
>>
>>24232533
"I don't believe so your highness."
>>
>>24232811
Perhaps someone with the military contingent speaks the isladers' language. It's likely that they speak some of ours, but it'd go smoother if we can at least tell them "We don't want to kill you" in a way that they all understand.

Assuming we don't.

"Your highness, we've established contact with one who appears to be there leader. He speaks a sort of pigeon anglish, and... they claim to be looking for the Princess from the moon!"
>>
>>24233087

"Bring this person in, I guess we have to talk. Everyone else is to be taken to a hangar under guard, and be offered a hot meal."
>>
>>24233114
agreed
oh and bring Sir "Smiles" Harker and the lord protector so he may deck Sir smiles gently if this is his fault.
>>
>>24233154

The hangar is because it's enclosed but not claustrophobic, and easy to control entrance/exits to. The hot meal is because we should show hospitality befitting our station; this may well be a misunderstanding.

Still want someone guarding the research.
>>
>>24233180

I think we all understood that.
>>
>>24233199
sorry!
>>
Are you going to meet them yourself or just detaining them in the hangar?
>>
>>24233442

We should meet the leader. Everyone else can have a bowl of soup, never it be said that we're not hospitable.

Flanked by Sir Harker, and Sir Perro, still in there wet spacesuits, and a contingent of armed and uniformed guards. You head to the hangar, where half of the intruders are waiting, the other half staying near the canoes on the beach. As the report stated, they are definitely natives. Four men and two women, wearing grass skirts and flowers, with tribal tattoos. The leader appears to be a man about your age wearing a wreath on his head and carrying some kind of club. He bows when he sees you enter. "Ah you the princess from da moon who is try to return to her home? My sister has told me much about you." He points to one of the girls, who appears to be a few years younger than you, and is carrying some sort of device made out of tiny sticks lashed together to form some sort of map.
>>
>>24233636

We should be polite and not belittle their beliefs. Is the map recognizable in any fashion?

"Er, not quite. Why did you come? We feared you were soldiers sent to destroy our vessels."
>>
>>24233689
It looks like a bunch of sticks tied together. You can only guess it's some kind of map by it's shape, but you have no way of understanding it. Esp not from this distance.

"If you are not the princess from the moon, than Ah ask you to take me to her. I saw her star rising from this island, and her sky canoe stands waiting in that field." He points to the unfinished Archangel. "Ah apologize for not introducing myself, I am prince Orion. Son of she in seven waves. This is mah sister Maia, she guided me and my companions to this island." Maia seems to be rather shy and somewhat frightened of you, or maybe it's the two men in big orange suits, or all the guns?
>>
>>24233930

Oh that was a rocket that I launched Prince Orion, emm tell me what islands in the area do you and your tribe own?

(WE STOLE DER LAND)

also this is a great idea to have our Void knights trained in who knows what creatures or people they will find on their journeys.
>>
>>24233930

That's... impressive. "Ladies and gentlemen, would you allow this man to join your ranks? Boldness is definitely what we're after."
>>
>>24234009
"Own? I do not own, this island is yours. I have come to help you return to the moon" He seems pretty convinced that you are the person he's looking for.

"So you wish to add another champion to the tournament your highness?" Sir Harker asks. "I assure you, this time I had nothing to do with this." he adds in response to your suspicious attitude from earlier. "Honestly, I outwit you once and suddenly I am the master of every conspiracy."

Sir Perro doesn't say anything, he does however seem to be sizing up the young prince and his Entourage.
>>
>>24234685

Is he cute?

"You have to admit, just up and showing up takes a certain kind of courage..."
>>
>>24234685

"I wish for all of the world to be able to travel to the moon one day Prince Orion, if you feel up to it I shall accept your aid in this quest. But first I would also love to talk to your sister about that map of what might be stars."

Send him and his people to meet with the contestants while we talk to Maia.

We also need to talk to Sir Harker about what he wants, hes far to smart and valuable to let off.
>>
>>24234766

This Prince Orion should be added to the roster and expect to pick up the pace quickly. He mentioned helping, wonder what that means.

"We can use all the help we can get, how do you plan to help?"
>>
>>24234756
His shoulders are very shapely indeed.

>>24234791
"Then it is decided, I shall aid your quest in any way I can moon princess. I am at your service." You get the feeling he probably dosn't know much about rocketry, but he'll probably learn quickly enough.

>>24234766
Maia tries to stand behind the other natives, hiding her map. Again she seems to be afraid of you.

Alright, it's late, and I apologies for running an entire session with no budget allocations, but PLOT is happening.
No quest on Sunday or Monday night because of work and school. See you on tuesday.
>>
>>24235009

have a good night godmother, and personally I just lurk during the budget spending parts and actively work on the PLOT points.

thank you!
