Let's see... no real news, really. Lucked out and found all the old work we'd done on a planes and mercs system, but it's all the printed material, so.... yeah. Still it was pretty fun when we were playing it, I'm going to try and brush the dust off it and get it up to speed again. I'll add in witches later... probably. IDK.

Anyway archives here: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Strike%20witches%201989

and there's a character sheet here: http://pastebin.com/zFxWNup1
The archives are getting kind of long, the sheet does a fairly good job of getting someone up to speed if they're interested.

As it happens, Katya's taken to shopping with an incredible gusto. She's blown a small fortune already, at least a grand, and that number looks to be climbing quickly.

It's really just one more thing to 'thank' admiral Nixon for- he'd apparently managed to get Katya squared away with a lieutenant senior grade's pay within the first few hours of her being with your squadron. Since then, she, like you, has amassed a respectable sum, between base pay, combat pay, hardship posting pay... the list goes on.

Except, up till now, she really hasn't spent any of it. Her massive (and rapidly growing) collection of books, as you recently found out, is pouring in from 'admirers' from across the states. Apparently, there was some news coverage of her after her defection, and it mentioned her love of reading. That she's pretty and exotic- and a witch- made it a foregone conclusion she'd be receiving letters and packages from people all across the nation. And a few from Canada, too.

That said, you've not really asked about any of the letters or 'admirers' - her business is hers, after all. Maybe you should, but not right now.

Right now, you're negotiating that timeless landmine: 'do these pants make my butt look big?' Thus far, you're pretty sure you've avoided any mishaps, though you have to wonder where she learned that damn phrase. Probably Slider or the twins, you think.

At least it's a welcome change from being dragged store-to-store, hauling the majority of her purchases. You're still trying to figure out how you're going to get this all back to Miramar. You think there was a bike trailer somewhere in the shed, but if you pack it right, and get a bigger bag, you should be able to fit it into a backpack or duffel bag.

She's managed to grab a pair of lava lamps, about a dozen more books, and a set of new bedsheets. Apparently she likes these sheets a hell of a lot better than the white cotton ones on the beds now, but you can't really tell a difference. A sheet's a sheet, man. In addition to that, she's bought several pairs of shorts, a few of which would do Daisy Duke herself proud, a few skirts, one dress that you did actually think she wore very well, another sun dress you were ambivalent towards, and about three- wait, no, four pairs of shoes.

She's just about hit every shop in the mall once- and you're fairly sure she's going to want to do another round. You've been here about two hours, you've got about one left till dinner, and it's about a twenty minute drive back to your aunt and uncle's place.

2/3
>>
“Frank, do you think we should buy some things for the others?” Katya asks, stopping suddenly in front of you- an annoying habit she's picked up in the mall. Seems like she's still overwhelmed, but now it's by the options. More than once today, you ran into her when she'd stop in front of a store, trying to decide if she wanted to go in. “I remember you bought us those gifts, and I would feel badly if I did not get them something to thank them.”

Hmm... she has a point, but you're kind of strapped for time. It's not real bad, and so far, she's not taken too long on deciding what she wants- well, other than that one time, between those two miniskirts- but then again, gifts for everybody could be different, you don't know.

[x] Well, we've got forty minutes. Plenty of time for a fighter pilot and a witch, huh?

You check your watch- an impressive feat of manual dexterity and agility as you have to shuffle several large bags of Katya's stuff to do so. You figure forty minutes is plenty of time, all told.

“Yeah, forty minutes is plenty of time for a fighter pilot and a witch, huh?” You say, chuckling as you attempt to re-balance the load.

Katya smiles. “Good! I have many ideas, but I will need some help!” She says- making a beeline for a small hobby shop, nestled in between an Asian store and a jewelers.

Inside, an old man with a white beard looks up and greets you with a smile- asking if you need any help. Katya shakes her head, and drags you towards the model airplanes. “Little Merlin has often talked with me about how much she loves airplanes, yes?” Katya says while walking. “I am thinking this is something she would very much like.”

She turns over a model- a 1:48 scale tomcat- in her hands, looking at the box, the helmeted and masked pilots, then you. “The one in the back seat is too big to be little Merlin, and the markings are wrong, but the rest of it is correct. Do you think she would like this?”

[x] Very much, yeah.

You nod, picking out a Merlin-engined P-51 model yourself and chuckling.

“Yeah, I think she'll like it. We'll have to work on the details some if she wants to make it like our cat, but...” You say, putting the Mustang down on the counter.

“A P-51?” Katya asks, and you point at the engine. “Merlin powered.”

She laughs. “Little Merlin powering a fighter makes sense. I wonder if perhaps that is where her nickname came from?”

You shrug- she'd had the callsign before she was assigned to the squadron.

“Who's next?” You ask, walking out of the hobby store. Katya grins. “I am thinking Slider and the twins need some gifts, yes? I am not sure what to get them, though. I was thinking perhaps clothing, but I do not know what. Perhaps swimwear? They do all seem to enjoy doing that.”

You nod in agreement, trailing along behind Katya. “Sounds like a winner. What were you thinking, specifically? And do you know their sizes?”

Katya shrugs. “I know them well enough to guess, yes. We are fortunate in that they are all of a similar build, so it should not be hard to find them things.”

“I... ah... can't say I noticed.” You say, causing her to laugh.

“You are a bad liar, Frank. Do not worry, I would think it strange if you had not noticed.” She returns, heading into an apparel store. “Friend Slider's hips could be trouble, though, I do not know if we can find a set of clothing designed for a girl with her shape.”

She's talking to herself as much as she is you, at this point, so you merely nod and follow.

“The twins are perhaps easier,” She says, stopping in front of several bodysuits. “They enjoy doing the surf, so....”

“Doing the surf?” You ask, momentarily confused.

Katya nods. “Yes. Perhaps they would like these?” She holds up a pair of wetsuits. “I am thinking to have holes cut out for their familiar fins, but otherwise they would look good?”

Well, flat black was never really your thing, but you nod. Last you saw the two of them, they had white bikinis anyway, so you're not sure how much use the wetsuits would get, but you're willing to go with it.

“Now, for friend Slider.” Katya murmurs, wandering off. Seems like camouflage is very 'in' this year- about half of the swimwear is in either woodland disruption or some stylized variant of it. Tiger stripe is also in abundance- along with those patterns with modified colors. You're honestly not sure how much good white, black, grey, and pink would be in combat, but you've got to admit, on this one-piece swimsuit it doesn't look that bad.

You look back up in time to see Katya holding up a fairly... small bikini in what looks, for all the world, like a snakeskin pattern. You're pretty sure it'll fit, but it won't leave a whole hell of a lot to the imagination.

Then again, it's Slider, so it's possible she'd like it just for that fact.

You nod. “Snakekini? Fits her perfectly.”

Katya laughs. “If it does, do not think I am wanting a furry one!”

“A furry Bikini?” You respond, confused.

She nods. “Yes. If we are buying witches clothing based on their Familiars, do not feel it necessary to buy me a furry bikini.”

You nod, still kind of lost. “O-ok. Yeah. Who's next?”

Katya shrugs. “Rosalie, and Maverick and little Goose.” She pauses. “And Ice, I am thinking.”

You nod.

Katya swerves to detour into a kitchen appliance store- making beeline to the copper pots. “Rosalie was complaining about the lack of good pots” she says as an explanation. “I am thinking that these are perhaps what she wants?” She indicates a vary good- and expensive- set of pots and pans.

“They say professional grade, but I am sure Rosalie will not mind they are somewhat beneath her. It would be hard to find a master smith willing to make pots!” Katya laughs at this.

[x] Yeah, I agree. We'll sort out how to carry it at dinner. Now, Maverick, Goose, and Ice?

“Yeah, that does seem like it'd be fairly difficult.” You agree, helping her carry the fairly heavy set up to the counter. “Who's next?”

“Little goose and Maverick.” Katya says. “And I have an idea for them.”

You work out the details of picking up the cookwear at the store- they'll hold it for you, and you can come back and pick it up when you're ready. By the time you've done that, Katya's already heading out the door, making tracks for a music store.

“Maverick has said she very much enjoys music. I was seeing some of those new CD playing machines in here when we came through the first time, yes? I am thinking that would be a good gift for her.”

You nod, agreeing. She prefers country-western music, which really isn't your thing by any stretch of the imagination. Johnny Cash is good, of course, but he doesn't count, since everybody likes his music.

“Hmm... Little Goose....” Katya says to herself, picking out several CDs- ranging from the royal guardsmen to Johnny Horton and Gordon Lightfoot.

“Little Goose likes living things, but it would be hard to move a pet.” She says, looking over at you. “I do not think Rufus, for example, would work out so well on a carrier, no?”

A sudden image of Rufus as a catapult officer or helo door gunner comes to your mind, and you stifle a laugh.

Katya cocks her head at you, and you shake yours. “No, no, I don't think so either.”

“Perhaps one of those... ah, what are they. The small trees we saw in Japan?” She says, paying for an armfull of CDs and a player.
“Bonsai?” You ask, surprised. You'd have never thought of that yourself.

Katya nods. “Yes! That.”

[x] Makes sense. So that just leaves the boss.

“Makes sense,” you say, trying not to let your voice strain with the weight of the bags you're carrying.

Katya smiles and nods, pleased you're thinking the same as her. She heads into the little asian shop, next to the hobby store. A few minutes later, she's leaving with a potted bonsai- two years old, it's a small evergreen of some sort, which the little guy behind the counter assured you was the most hardy of the lot. He even gave you a little wind cover, though he made sure to explain that was just for while it was on the motorcycle, and under no circumstances was it to be left under the cover.

“That just leaves... Ice, I guess.” You say, running through the mental checklist. “Well, unless you planned to get something for Ayumi and Katsumi too.”

Katya shrugs. “I did, but I do not think we will be seeing them for some time, yet. I will get something for comrade Ice, yes.”

You note that you're not actually moving anywhere.

“Uh, Katya?” You start, and she cuts you off.

“Do you trust me, Frank?” She asks, suddenly.

[x] Of course.

Momma always raised you to not be dumb. It stands to reason that saying no, right now, would be incredibly dumb.

“Of course.” You say, while working out ways to deal with a mean-spirited gift. But Katya's a combat vet, she wouldn't throw the squadron into chaos just because Ice was her 'rival' or something, would she?

Of course not.

Katya smile. “Good! Wait here, I will be back with something for comrade Ice.” She says, and traipses off into a Victoria’s secret before you can say another word.

You're on the bench a good fifteen minutes before she walks out- a pair of bags in her hand. Che catches you looking and smiles. “I purchased some things for myself, too.” She says. “We should go, yes? It would be rude to be late to your Aunt's dinner for us.”

You nod, busily trying to squelch your brain's mental images of Katya in whatever it is she bought. You don't have much luck, and just when you think you've done it, your brain, scumbag that it is, starts wondering what she bought Ice.

1/2
>>
Outside, you manage- through no small amount of cursing and brute force- to jam the majority of Katya's purchases in the saddlebags of the bike. Thankfully, your uncle left the SMG boot on the front- and it turns out, rolled- up packages fit in there pretty well.

Still, it's not exactly the best loading you've ever done, and Katya holds Goose's little bonsai in both hands up against your stomach as you ride back to your Aunt's place. Rufus looks up as you pull in the drive.

Inside, the house smells of your aunt's grilled steak and bell peppers- though you're sure there's mashed potatoes and mixed vegetables to go along with it. Possibly slaw or...

Looking into the dining room reveals a treat. She made her family-famous pineapple salad.

She brings another plate of food in and catches you looking around the corner. “Frank, you and your friend go wash your hands, and it'll be time for dinner. What do you want to drink?”

[x] YOU MADE KOOLAID OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD YES THAT!

You eye the pitcher full of delicious purple koolaid. “Koolaid for me, please.” You say, and Joe pours a glass full. It's not that the stuff is rare- the Navy loves it, afterall. But there's not a single place you've ever been in the USN that can get the stuff right. One case saw the mess adding salt instead of sugar- you'd gone for water, that night.

You sit down to dinner next to Katya- Joe occupies his dad's usual place, and Amy sits across from the two of you. Rufus, sniffing around underneath the table, finally parks himself between you and Katya, leaning into her chair. The food gets passed around, and before long, you're eating one of the best meals you've had in a while. Rosalie's cooking is great, but you don't think she could do a steak like this, let alone mashed potatos. And the salad? Forget it. No one comes close to that.

“So, Frank,” Your aunt says, setting her fork down. “What brings you back to the states? When your mother was deployed, she was gone almost a year before she came home.”

[x] Oh, you know. Usual military nonsense.

You shrug, trying to seem as bored as possible. “You know. Usual military nonsense.”

You aunt nods. “Your mom talked about that a lot. What was it... ?”

“Hurry up and wait?” Joe supplies, offering Katya another spoonful of the salad. She declines.

You shake your head. “Nah. This is what we'd call grabass, but it's not even that. Just... I don't know. Nonsense.”

You pass the rest of the meal in enjoyable small-talk. Amy compliments Katya on her hair, and before too long, Katya is chatting away with your aunt and Amy like they were old friends. Joe, for his part, still seems tongue-tied towards her.

With the meal finished, Joe collects the plates and glasses, while you sit for a minute, letting it settle.

“Is there anything I can do to help?” Katya asks from next to you. “I did not help prepare the meal, perhaps I can help clean up?”

Your aunt- never one to turn down help when it's offered- nods. “I could use a hand doing dishes, if you don't mind.” She says.

She looks at Joe. “Joe, why don't you and Frank go outside and play with Rufus or something? Miss Katya here has gotten you off the hook for dishes. Us girls can handle it in here.”

Rufus, at hearing his name, lifts up his head and looks at you.

[x] Sounds like a plan! 'Cmon Rufus!

“Sounds like a plan!” you say, standing up from the table. “'Cmon Rufus! Let's go outside!”

Rufus barks happily and about batters down the door on his way outside, nearly trampling Joe, who's a second too slow to get out of the way.

Joe hands you a battered baseball. You look at it and he shrugs. “Rufus pretty much shreds anything we get. Those last the longest.”

Rufus, for his part, is about halfway out in the yard, looking at you expectantly.

You know better than try to fool him- once your arm moves, he's going after the ball, and if he doesn't think it went downrange, he'll come get it.

You've no desire to be tackled by your dog twice in a day.

The baseball goes flying to the end of the property and beyond, crashing into the woods at the end of the yard.

“Nice throw.” Joe says. “Don't worry, he'll find it.” Rufus, as if fulfilling a prophecy just uttered, goes crashing into the woods, sounding like a platoon of infantry moving through there.

“So,” Joe says after a few minutes. “You and Miss Katya, huh?”

[x] Well..... you know what they say about officers and gentlemen. We're not supposed to tell.

“Well, you know I'm supposed to be an officer and a gentleman, Joe.” You say, watching Rufus thunder back out of the trees, baseball in his mouth. “We're not supposed to tell tales.”

“Oh,” Joe says, deflating a bit. “Yeah, I guess that makes sense. She's really pretty though, I mean I'd-”

“Joe.” You respond before he can tell you. “I am not lying when I say I am the only male pilot in the entire unit. I work in a charged environment with more than a half-dozen pantsless women who all fuss and nurse me because I fly steelwing. It's...complex.”

Joe screws up his face thinking about that. “Yeah, yeah. I guess I can see that.” He says. “Still,” he looks back over his shoulder. “Maybe I should be a pilot, that way I could work around witches all day too!”

You laugh. “Yeah, sure. If you want the headache, be my guest.” You say.

“It can't be that bad, can it?” He says, intercepting Rufus. After a brief struggle, he manages to get the baseball long enough to throw it- neatly topping your own throw, clearing the first line of trees and landing deeper into the woods.

“It can be... frustrating.” You sigh. “It's got a lot to do with history and- and you're just thinking of hooking up with witches, aren't you.”

Joe nods. Well, at least he's honest.

“It's rare. How many guys did it during the war? Like, what? Ten- Twenty? How many of those relationships lasted?” You're not trying to kill the kid's dreams, but damn.

You look back towards the house, and see Katya looking out the kitchen window at you. She smiles- the looks over at your aunt in shock and shakes her head, laughing.

Witches you can practically drop by parachute, if not for their Strikers. The problem with LAPES is that you have to fly in REALLY low to the ground, and you just push the object off the back ramp, letting the parachute slow it down and stop it. Not really safe to do deep behind the lines like that.

If you're gonna do it...
My friends, it has often been said that I like war. Friends, I like war. No, friends, I love war! I love holocausts. I love blitzkriegs. I love defensive lines. I love sieges, charges, I love mop-up operations, and retreats. Wars across prairies, in streets, in trenches, in grasslands, in frozen tundras, through deserts, on the sea, in the air, I love every act of war that can occur upon this earth. I love blasting the enemy to smithereens with artillery salvos that thunder across the lines of battle. My heart leaps with joy whenever a soldier is tossed high into the air and cut to pieces by well placed sniper rounds, and there is nothing like a tank operator using a Tiger 88 to destroy enemy tanks. And the feeling that comes when a soldier runs screaming from his blazing tank only to be mowed down by heavy machine gun fire, is such an exquisite feeling. Like when ranks of infantry brandish their bayonets rushing into the enemy line. It moves me deep within my heart to watch a fresh recruit stabbing over and over into the bloated chest of a long-dead enemy. The sight of deserters being strung up from a street lamp is an irresistible pleasure. And there is nothing more arousing, than the sounds made by prisoners of war dropping like flies, screaming in agony as they're mowed down by ear piercing schmeissers!

When a band of pitiful resistance fighters makes their final stands with nothing but small arms, only to have their city smashed to atoms block by block by 4.8 ton bombshells, I'm in ecstasy. I love it when my forces are ravaged by a Russian armored division. It's so sad to see towns and villages that were supposed to be defended at all costs, being laid to waste, their women and children being raped, and killed. I love to be squashed under the heel of the British and American war machines. The humiliation, as my men crawl around like vermin, ducking the jagdbombers flying overhead. Gentlemen, all I ask for is war. A war so grand as to make Hell itself tremble. Gentlemen, I ask you as fellow brothers in arms, what is it you really want? Do you wish for further war as I do? Do you wish for a merciless, bloody war? A war whose fury is built with iron, and lightning, and fire? Do you ask for war to sweep in like a tempest, leaving not even ravens to scavenge from this Earth?!

[x] I'm not sure. I'd like to, but I don't want to have to leave in a hurry and cause a problem.

You bite your lower lip and shake your head, sadly. “I can't. As much as I want to, I can't. If something comes up, I gotta know someone's able to take care of him, ya know?”
Joe nods. “Yeah, I kinda figured you'd say that. We're headed back to see grandma this summer. She still lives on that big farm house, so...”

You nod. The house has been in the family since about 1830. A lot of the family land around it was sold over the years, but the house and most of the outbuildings have remained Bishop property. You don't think Rufus has ever been out there, at least not yet, but it's prime country for him.

“I could sure use the sidecar, though.” You add. “Katya bought a lot of stuff, and...”

Joe laughs. “Girls, huh? Yeah, if you want to pull the bike around, we can hook it up. 'course, if you're going to stay the night, we can just do it in the morning, too, no problem.”

[x] Nah, I think we're gonna head out tonight, got some places to go see.

You shake your head again. “Nah, it was only a forty eight hour pass, so we can't really spend the night.” You say, getting the keys out of your pocket. “Hang on, I'll bring it around.”

Joe nods, jumping down off the deck and opening up the shed behind the house.

You two work for about an hour to attach the sidecar- it's not the hardest thing you've ever done, but it's not the easiest, either. A few busted knuckles and a couple of scrapes later, though, and it's on.

Joe stands up, brushing his hands off on his pants. “Well, I guess you're gonna be leaving?”

You nod. “Yeah, I need to collect Katya, and tell your mom and sister goodbye though.”

Inside the house, you find the three of them sitting at the kitchen table, drinking steaming cups of... something. Tea, smells like.

“So, are you going to stay the night?” You aunt asks. “I can have Amy and Joe sleep in the living room, I'm sure they don't mind.”

You shake your head. “No, we have some places we want to go see, and we've only got a two day pass.”

>>
You aunt looks at Rufus. “You taking your dog?”

You shake your head. “I can't. I can't be sure I'll have time to sort something out if anything comes up. You don't mind, do you?”

She laughs. “No, not at all. He's a good dog, and we all feel a bit better with him around.”

It's a small consolation, but it's something.

“Thank you for the wonderful meal.” Katya says, giving your aunt and Amy hugs. “And thank you for the advice. I will try to follow it.”

“Thanks auntie. I'll see you guys next chance I can, ok?” You say, hugging her and Amy and giving Joe a handshake. The hardest part is when Rufus gets up to come with.

“No, Rufus. Stay.” You say, falling back on the hard part of you developed at the academy. You still barely keep your voice level as he sits back down, confused. “Be- Be a good dog, ok? Take care of the family. I'll be back as soon as I can, alright?”

You step out the door and into the cooling night, noticing Katya's put a pair of tight jeans.

She hugs you from behind, briefly. “That was the right thing, Frank.” She says in your ear. “You are a good man for leaving him here. I know how much you did not want to.”

You nod, trying to clear your head.

Just a note, as a californian, the 1 will take longer and full of twists and turns, while every other path is much straighter.

Yeah, but the 1 lets us have that classic shot of the motorcycle along the coast with the sunset behind it.

Which route has less traffic likely to notice two people having sex on a motorcycle? Just in case.

You pull your atlas out in the mall parking lot, as Katya adjusts her loot. Most of it takes up the sidecar- though there's still enough room in there, if just barely, for her. California 1 looks like the best, most scenic route, but it's almost twice as long- eighteen hours plus as opposed to the nine or so you're thinking for I-5.

Still, a ride along the coast, at night and into the morning, would be amazing- you'll miss sunset, you think, but you hear the stars are amazing out that way, and besides, you'll have time to stop a few of the more scenic overlooks along the way.

You top off the 'hogs gas tank in town and roar off into the night, looking forward to both the ride and the company.

And that's it for us tonight guys! We actually hit the stopping point I was shooting for a few posts back, so we got in some extra content, haha. Next time I'll plan better, I think.

As always, I hope you guys enjoyed the run, and we'll be back next Tuesday for the next thread.

If I had more days off, I'd run more than once a week, but I've got two, and it's hard enough to get the block I've got to agree with everyone, but such is life.

3/10 roadtrip at best, lots of wasted potential.
