You are Ssen, a Lamia raised by a human Paladin who adopted you after killing the ones who birthed you. You are grown now, and Father has passed on. After a great deal of work, you have become a Paladin like your Father, and now take up his duties.

You are accompanied by your best friend from childhood, the insect druid Tricia; Mage, a magic user who ran away from his family of cannibal raiders known as the Ghouls (Yes, his name is Mage. It was his idea); Persephone, a 22-year old thief/ex-guerllia fighter (She goes by Peri), and Mari, a 13-year old prodigy scholar/now sniper, who has her mind and soul trapped within Peri's body; and Lea, a deeply religious musician/martial artist, trained by her father, a famous trainer for arena fighters, she's covered from her mouth down in bandages to hide the horrific state her body has become thanks to the 'cures' that saved her from cancer.

Your journey continues...

Ryan: Be sure to not sit too close to the screen, and to be in a well lit room. The great and glorious Fey Court Resistance needs every man and woman at their best!

Jessie: Also, if you do feel that life's pointless procession has marched far enough with you, it keeps your beautiful shell from looking bloated and flaky-skinned...but the again what is life but a long period of people bloating or flaking their souls away.

Robin: ::sharp whistle:: Idiots, come on! Fortunes don't steal themselves! Enjoy folks.

Your talks with the dragon known as Old One have gone well, by indulging him in a tale of your victories, and successfully making him feel that the Dramatae are his own personal enemies, he now has opened up his stores of knowledge to you.

My heart jumped when I saw this.

You don't know how much we worry about you echo.

Once the time to input commands has come, I would like to ask these questions of the dragon.

"A few last questions on bonding, and then the topic will move on- Is the pain from bonding lethal? If I had my servant remove, say, an arrow from me, could it kill them? Also, is there a limit to the bonds? Will a dragon grow weaker with more bonded servants?"
>>
>>24308443
If I recall last thread right I think we were going to ask all what we can do with our blood along with if the ritual works on non-dragon servants relatives. Also if being wasp witch would mess with the ritual in anyway. Basically, all the info about the our blood and ritual process.
>>
>>24308443
I assume Old One is still answering our questions.

"Does the servant ritual work with those not descended from the Dragon Servants of old?"

I wonder if we should ask if the Old One has met Scheherazade? It may not be important, but getting another powerful entity's opinion on her might not be a bad thing. We've been assuming that she has been acting in our best interests, though she has not truly given us any hint of caring about anything beyond offspring and the fall of Citadel.
>>
>>24308736
old one doesn't like Scheherazade. He said she's just a guardian, not a champion. I don't know if this implies they met or not.
>>
>>24308736
We-well at least I am pretty sure he met her. He mentioned another beautiful one who is part of his horde and lead/watched over a group.

"Does the servant ritual work with those not descended from the Dragon Servants of old?"

"No Dragon has ever done this ritual on those that were not of the chosen Servants. They were the only ones worthy of the honor." Old one says.

"A few last questions on bonding, and then the topic will move on- Is the pain from bonding lethal?"

"Of course not, it would be a waste of a perfectly good Servant. Though...there was a time where a Servant tried to aid a corrupted Dragon by ending his torment. That was an action that cost the loyal servant his life. Though that could have been from their wounds as well."

"If I had my servant remove, say, an arrow from me, could it kill them?"

"No. That is just pain, not pain caused by your servant." The Dragon sniffs derisively. "Though a single arrow is nothing to a Dragon."

"Also, is there a limit to the bonds? Will a dragon grow weaker with more bonded servants?"

"Of course not. A Dragon should have many servants, and if bonds are solid, then a Dragon should have many bonds. It is why I am willing to allow that forgotten Servant to stay here. If it proves its worth, then I shall keep it. Because I can." Old One says.

Asking about his blood, what it can really do. There's myth and legends about it but only one truth. Note, I'm not asking him to give any; just what's its limits, if any.

More me wanting to know than anything else.
>>
>>24308958
I don't want to ask unnecessary questions of the dragon.

Maybe if he brings his own blood up.

or well back rather.
How were the servants of the corrupter killed? Do they die like normal beings?
(ie, is there anything special we need to do to kill Peace if we get the chance)
>>
>>24308881
Maybe ask our little group if they have any questions. I mean it's not often you get to ask a dragon a question. Who knows. Someone might want to ...
>>
>>24309046
I think they die like normal beings, assuming they regenerate and are tough and have poison blood and probably redundant organs.

So: extreme force.
>>
>>24308881
"Are there any more secrets to my blood you would tell me about? The bonding thing came as a surprise, hence the laborious questions I've gone over."

"Just that you should not use it to try and heal or extend anyone's life. The gifts it holds have been tainted by the foulness of the Leviathans. Your flesh and heart are purer, but throughout you lies their poison. It is a heavy burden to bear, but you have done better than others." Old Ones says.

He motions to some empty barrels that he has in a pile, along with some other detritus. "Have your servants fill those with the corrupt coins. You may take them."
>>
>>24309073
ask them if "we have forgotten anything", not if they have any questions.

It will make it seem like it's a foible on our part, not that our servants are uppity. Just a thought.
>>
>>24308947
This, please. Also:

"Do you know any way to communicate or observe at a great distance?"

"We will return your book to the Bear Shrine library; did you want it to remain only readable by those who shared Dragon blood, like myself, or would you object to us translating it for others to share in your wisdom?"

"Finally, I wanted to apologize. Yesterday, I rashly asked you for something of which we need not speak again. And yet, in talking to you today, you have provided solutions for all of those maladies we thought to seek a more miraculous cure for. I should have thought to explain and ask, first."
>>
>>24309082
"We would need to find a sample of Pure Metal to remove the corruption from these coins; until we do, they will not aid us against our enemy. Would you object to us leaving them here until we find the Pure Metal, and returning for them then? I could hardly think of a safer place in all the world."
>>
>>24309082
Gesture for your friends to get started. Continue on with these questions, in addition to the time one.
>>24309136
Then perhaps ask our friends if we have forgotten anything.
>>
>>24309182
I would suggest against that, this stuff is trash to him. I don't think he wants to keep it now that he can get rid of it on someone. But I might be overly polite.
>>
>>24309231
No, he collected it out of respect for what it once was; he doesn't think it has value beyond sentimental, so if we think we can use it he'll grant it to us in exchange for what we've given him, but I don't think he'd object to having it around.

We don't want to imply we want his services guarding it, though. We just don't want to lug barrels of coins around, and there's a certain security in merely being in proximity to a dragon.
>>
>>24309277
Eh, go with what you want. I might be biased from wanting to store those coins in our lighthouse.
>>
>>24309299
Little Dragon's first hoard. The Old One would be proud.
>>
>>24309277
The fact that Dramataes are out to destroy his horde which included these coins. Personally, I want to get these things out of here fast.
>>
>>24309136
"Do you know any way to communicate or observe at a great distance?"

"Dragons have no need for that. People and things COME to Dragons, we grace places with OUR presence and WE are what is observed." Old One says.

"We will return your book to the Bear Shrine library; did you want it to remain only readable by those who shared Dragon blood, like myself, or would you object to us translating it for others to share in your wisdom?"

"I gave permission for MY book to be translated by the Bear Tribe and the Bear Tribe alone. As long as one member of that Tribe lives, it will remain so. A Dragon NEVER goes back on their word. Take the book to this Holting, and see what they will. Either they WILL make a new translation of it, or continue to guard its secrets. If you find that this Holting is NO LONGER of the Bear Tribe...THEN you may find a new scribe. BUT NOT BEFORE."

"Finally, I wanted to apologize. Yesterday, I rashly asked you for something of which we need not speak again. And yet, in talking to you today, you have provided solutions for all of those maladies we thought to seek a more miraculous cure for. I should have thought to explain and ask, first."

"Indeed." Old One says.

"We would need to find a sample of Pure Metal to remove the corruption from these coins; until we do, they will not aid us against our enemy. Would you object to us leaving them here until we find the Pure Metal, and returning for them then? I could hardly think of a safer place in all the world."

Old One growls and closes an eye. "Indeed, I am the one who owns them. Until you have EARNED the right to take them, they will stay with ME."
>>
>>24309277
How about a Passion head for the coins? We do have a Passion waiting to be relieved off his head.

I was hoping we get a guarded caravan to bring the coins back to the lighthouse.
>>
>>24309342
Note that his hoard and his horde are two different things. The former would include the coins, gold, information, and his other treasures. The latter would refer to his servants and similar. The Dramatae threatened his horde.

We came here specifically to warn him. We might also want to figure out if we can do anything else to help protect him. But in any case, with Old One warned in advance, I'd bet on him over the Dramatae.

Do we really think he's still in serious danger? Because if so, I think we should be figuring out how to protect him.
>>
>>24309412
Good point. No way Trivalon is getting out of that, and unless Balles objects strongly (which he might), Trivalon won't be needing it anymore.
>>
>>24309409
Look to Lea to see her reaction: "We defeated one of the lesser Dramatae in combat, when he took a force to the Bear Shrine to attempt to steal your book. So, perhaps you'd like the first part of your price early?"
>>
>>24309440
>>24309412
Haha, you silly flibberflabbers. Wanting the coins here, then not.
>>
>>24309485
Oh, I'd still like to leave the coins here to avoid lugging around hundreds or thousands of pounds of corrupted metal. But we *did* promise him the heads of the Dramatae, and we have a Dramatae who will shortly be parted from his.
>>
>>24309519
And the fact that he betrayed our dad has nothing to do with our decision. <whistles>
>>
>>24309519
For reference: http://www.kokogiak.com/megapenny/five.asp

Two cubic feet of copper coins: 614 pounds or 278.7 kilos. And we're talking about barrels, plural, of Lantern coins. Unless this metal is ludicrously light, we're talking about way more weight than we want to carry around to our next several destinations. We could store it here, or in Stone Hall, but we don't want to keep it in the wagon.
>>
>>24309479
"We defeated one of the lesser Dramatae in combat, when he took a force to the Bear Shrine to attempt to steal your book. So, perhaps you'd like the first part of your price early?"

"The Coins are yours, but I will protect them until they can be returned to their uncorrupt glory, as for the head." He growls. "I wish the heads of the ones who DARED to take what is mine. I wish not their worthless lackeys. They are unworthy of even a gl-"

Old One stops mid-sentance and snaps his head towards the door. "THEY WOULD NOT DARE!"

Old One points to a pile of fine looking silks that are heaped together in one area. The kids head towards them.

"GO. See what is happening. I must prepare myself." Old One says.

>>
>>24309802
"Is there any other entrance to this room, other than that door?"

Old One just growls. You doubt Dragons have a concept of 'back entrance' or 'emergency exit.' Dragons, and everyone that serves or visits them goes through ONE pair of doors.

You head out.

Ted has his axes out, Grace has a large butcher's cleaver in her hands, Paul is scratching at the ground with his talons.

The Lightbringers are here. However, they aren't alone. Also they don't seem to be conscious. They're each on a separate stretcher, being carefully carried.

Their entourage contains at least ten people in robes and blank masks, just showing their eyes. Similar to the ones the Sisters wore. Leading them is a new Passion. This one is female, dressed in chain-plate and has a two-handed great sword on her back.

"Well, well, well..." Passion says. "This IS a bonus."

The Lightbringers are carefully set down and the mob takes out an assortment of blades, bows, and two have scepters.

"What are you doing with those two?" Lea asks.

"Our Masters have decided that they no longer need to be so...light handed, regarding their actions." Passion says. "We out number you, and that old fossil in there isn't going to be doing anything funny." Passion holds a focus stone in her hand. It's glowing a mixture of blue energy and this purple/black energy you've only seen once before, around Peace's hands when she was trying to kill Lea and Jeremy.

The Iron Door behind you slams shut and you see that same mixture of magic energies swirl along the door, forming a barrier.

"Now...what to do with you." Passion says.

its probably thick enough to hold a dragon, and if we melt it the whole place could come down on our heads.

I really doubt Old One would appreciate us destroying his lair.

We should consider making the option available to members of the order some point in the future. Alternatively keep some blood/etc stored away in a secure location should it be needed.

While we're on that we need to compile a full journal of our discoveries about citadel, its weaknesses, those of the dramatae, and that merfolk mind protection stuff. Anything that could be usefull to other groups like ours in the event the worst should happen.

The glut of the group are people with swords, maces, and daggers, skills boosted to combat capability thanks to the masks. There's six of them and Passion is running up with them.

Hanging in the back of the group are two crossbow users and two mages. They're staying by the unconscious forms of the Lightbringers.

One of the thugs goes for Tricia.

Lea goes into fighting the thugs.

You bash her in the side with your tail, and nail her in the shoulder with Beacon.

Beacon starts to glow.

Passion staggers back. She's got a good chunk of blood on her from your wounds and she holding her side where you cracked her with your tail.

She touches a hand to her mask, and lets out a gasp and then the mask flares with that purple-black energy.

One of the other thugs pauses in mid-battle, blood starts to drip out from their eye-holes in the mask and they collapse to the ground.

Passion's wounds literally heal themselves before your eyes, and she straightens back up.

With a scream, she does the old trick of trying to take a chunk out of your tail.

One of the crossbow men fires at Paul.

Mage starts to chant. He's at the back of the hall, a hand on the door. "By the name that is Sally Albread, I speak of truth and command thee, my will is greater, and her magic is mine..." He says that mantra over and over again.

The other crossbow man shoots at Paul as well.

One of the Mask mages shoots a fireball at you.

Another of the thugs is going for Grace.

Another for Ted.

Lea's in the mix with the thugs.

Mari's still trying to shoot one of the mages.

Mari's shot nails one of the mages. There's a shout of pain and surprise, then his mask glows and he straightens back up, still bleeding. The masks must be giving these people a way to fight past the pain as well.

Paul screams as one of the two bolts hits him in the leg. He's still flying though.

The mage shoots a fireball at Grace.

Ted keeps trying to look like a competent combatant for his monster. He can't let the old woman show him up!

Paul does another dive bomb attack on the crossbow guy that shot him.

Sally's blow is easily blocked with Beacon, and you twitch out of the way of the thug who tried for you.

From Grace's hat emerges a mass of white insects. They look like hornets, but with the beautiful white wings of a snow moth. Tricia's learned a new trick!

"Sic him!" Tricia points her swarm at the mage and the hybrid insects descend upon the poor bastard.

Grace lets out a scream as a fireblast gets her in the head, singeing a lot of her hair off. She replies by turning around and slashing at a thug.

Lea does another stomach punch into a thug, who takes a step back and looks down to see two blade points sticking out from his chest. Peri pulls them free, but the effort of doing so opened her up for an attack by one of the goons.

Paul got hit in the wing, and he crashes to the floor. From what you can see the guy's still breathing, but obviously dazed.

The mage is too busy dealing with Tricia's swarm of Snow Wasps.

>>
>>24312610
actually if she doesn't heal herself, it's just one death, and quite swift. It'll only be painful if she tries to extend her own misbegotten life.

Sally misses, but the archer doesn't a Lea ends up with a gash.

"GOT IT!" Mage shouts and the swirling mass of energy holding the door disappears and the door flings open, shoing Old One in all his glory. He roars and breathes a blast of heat out at the people who dare to attack HIS lair.

The other archer and the mage are vaporized. You see their clothes, flesh, muscles, and then skeletons in rapid succession, and then nothing but drifting ash.

"BEHOLD! The POWER of the LIGHT!" You say, and you point Beacon at Passion.

A bolt of blinding white light blasts out from the tip of the spear, and slams into the woman. The Passion mask shatters, and those wounds that you inflicted upon her before reappear, her flesh ripping apart as her body recalls the damage she tried to deflect unto others. Also she's screaming in pain as the wounds burn and cauterize themselves, causing her nothing but agony.

"SHUT UP! SHUT UP! SHUT UP! YOU LIKED IT! YOU ALL WANTED IT! YOU WANTED IT! YOU WANTED IT!" She screams as she shuts her eyes and puts her hands over her ears. "NONE OF YOU EVER SAID NO! NONE OF YOU EVER SAID STOP! SHUT UP SHUT UP SHUT UP SHUT UP!!!" She wails.

Everyone seems to be a little stunned. Even Old One blinks.

Lea is the first to recover and goes back to trying to take out the archer.

Peri does a double slash on the last thug, who tries to fight back.

Tricia goes to help Peri finish off the last thug with Peri.

Grace goes for the archer.

Ted goes for the archer too.

It's just a good policy to only allow people ONE shot to kill you. If they fail, fine, they can go home and be a family man. If they try again, well, you may be a paladin, but you're not a saint.
>>
>>24313315
Put her out of other people's misery, with Beacon.

Fuck. I just realized.

Eh, it just doesn't strike me as that bad a thing.

It's not like she's mindcontrolling kids into ritual blood sacrifices.

Well, now she is. I'm much more angry about that, now that I think about it, than her petty child molestation crimes.

Hell, child molestation investigations are practically vacations for paladins.
>>
Knock her out with Clang. Its been her bane here and the first itme we fought. We'll give her to the Old One
>>
>>24313379
Oh no. She's *ours*, after what she did to our friends. Old One can wait in line; we're protecting *our* horde.
>>
>>24313389
shhhhh sh sh sh

Too much dragon stories today for Ssen.
>>
>>24313396
OldOne said he only wanted the heads of the Dramatae not the Passions, We are supposed to take care of them.
>>
>>24313305
"You used them for your own pleasure. Is it any wonder they are angry? Go to His Light, Sally Allbright."

You jam Beacon right into Sally's chest, through her heart, and out the other side.. She makes a gurgle, then you rip Beacon out leaving a gapin hole in her chest that you can actually see through. She drops to the floor, dead.

The thug and the archer both drop their weapons, and rip off their masks. They're both babbling about surrender, how they were 'made' to do it, begging for mercy, and other similar reactions.

Old One's reaction is to use a claw to smear the thug against the cave wall in three different places, and, with another lunge, devours the archer, in three crunches and a swallow. (He's old, swallowing whole is for the kids.)

Old One looks around the cave. It's covered in blood, and dead bodies. Grace is slumped against a wall, alive but seriously hurt. Paul is also in a heap against a pillar, slowly counting his blood splattered feathers.

Old One looks at you. Covered in blood, your weapon dripping with gore and your shield sporting burn marks and gashes...and he laughs.

"YES!" Old One cries. "You ARE a Dragon, Little One!" He laughs again. "To have defeated so MANY, and to have undone such dark magic, and..." He takes in a deep sniff of the battlefield. His eyes closed with pleasure. "New Servant!"

"Yes, my Lord?" Ted says, bowing.

"You fought serviceably...you will stay as a Servant of the Old One. You are MINE now."

"THANK YOU! Thank you, your greatness!"

"Yes. Now, clean all this up." Old One says. "Small ones, go help your mother and the harpy. Then patch up the Little Dragon and her Servants."

"Yes, Lord." Grace's kids say as they go about their business.

Old One goes back to his horde and the doors close behind him.

Lea shakes her head. "They said they weren't going to pull punches." She winces. "It'll probably get harder once we get to areas that they can EASILY move through."

(continuing)
>>
>>24313448
"Uhh, guys?" Mage says. "What do we do with them?" He points to the Lightbringers.

"Mmph." The Girl says as she rolls over and touches the Boy. "Adahn...not this early. Sleep in your own bed." She mumbles. She looks up, and she sees a room filled with blood, bodies, and people covered in blood and gore standing over them.

She screams and jumps up.

"Muh?" The boy says getting up. "Whu? Ava? What? AH!!" He shouts as he gets up, fumbling for the weapon strapped to his back. "Gha!" He winces as he tries to pull it free, but all that fancy carvings and the awkward size make it impossible for him to pull it free smoothly, and when he does, he actually has trouble holding it (Mostly because he's doing it incorrectly, and also because that thing must weight a ton and he's not build like a mountain of muscle needed to swing that thing.)

"S-s-stay back!" He says.

>>24313480
"You know you're holding that wrong."
>>

plant the butt of Beacon in the ground and ask them;

"Put that thing away before you hurt yourself."

"Dont you recognize us? We met before near Bronze Peaks at the inn."
>>
>>24313480
Oh, hey, now we know their names.

"You were just unconscious. If we wanted you dead, it would have been easier to kill you before you woke up. So, since you know we don't want to hurt you, perhaps you could put that comically overcompensating sword away before you hurt yourself, and find out what's been going on first?"
>>
>>24313506
Calm even. Fuck me.
>>
>>24313480
"Oh, hello there. Nice to meet you two again. Remember me? Paladin serpent? How have you been? Pardon the mess, these masked men were quite violent."
>>
>>24313512
Good money says the Dramatae wiped us from their memories and confiscated the medallion.
>>
>>24313524
They're just a little too freaked out over the state of the room to recognize us immediately.

And I'll bet she still has the medallion.
>>
>>24313480
Be calm. We mean you no harm. Do you remember me? Paladin Ssen?

This woman and her band had kidnapped you and brought you here. I do not know why. But we fought and they fell. They were purists from Stone Hall, perhaps they wished to sacrifice the Lightbringers to the dragon that lives in these Peaks to rile up Citadel and turn hatred against non-humans.
>>
>>24313531
Don't give them the wrong idea about the Dragon. The truth is far more degrading to these two, but not dispelling their delusion is even more unfair to them.
>>
half truths are always fun, but you have a point. hmm, instead of sacrificing them to the dragon they planned on killing the Lightbringers themselves and blaming him.
>>
>>24313557
Oh? I suspected the plan was to do the Lightbringers' part (Dragonslaying) for them and implant false memories of that victory in their sleeping minds to give them back the foolhardy morale they needed in order to be good little pawns.
>>
>>24313570
Is telling the truth wise though? I thought we were still being cautious about inviting Peace's direct intervention and having the Lightbringers go after Citadel or the Dramatae would definately bring her ire.
>>
>>24313512
You bang Beacon on the ground.

"Put that thing away before you hurt yourself, you're holding it wrong, anyway." You say. "You were just unconscious. If we wanted you dead, it would have been easier to kill you before you woke up."

"Ssen," Tricia says as she drags a body away. "Be nice."

"So, are we going to burn these?" Mage says. "Or does Old One want a midnight snack, or something?"

"How do none of these people carry ANY valuables?" Peri groans. "Fucking cheap-ass zealots!"

"Do you recognize us? We met before near Bronze Peaks at the inn. Ssen Patrick, the Paladin Serpent? How have you been? Pardon the mess, these masked men were quite violent." You point at Sally's corpse. "This woman and her band had kidnapped you and brought you here. I do not know why. But we fought and they fell."

The Boy and the Girl both stare blinking for a moment. Then the boy flips his hair and makes a dismissive sound. "Whatever, we could have taken them."

"Thank you." The Girl says. "I...I don't understand what's been happening. Ever since Stone Hall, things have been going so...so strange."

"Come on, we don't have time for this. We need to find a way off this mountain." The Boy says.

"Stop it. Just...just stop it!" The Girl says. "Where are we going anyway? The Wall of Prophecy's been totally wrong, and now we've been led around from fight to treasure horde, back to another fight, for no reason! I'm sick of this, and I'd like to know why!"

"Whatever." He storms off. "I'll be outside when you come to your senses."

"A real winner, there." Tricia says.

"He doesn't mean it...he's a good person, really. He's just upset. I've been helping him. He just needs some time, he's really a good person when you get to know him."

Lea shakes her head sadly. "Oh dear..."
>>
>>24313591
well of course it's not wise to blurt it out yet. So we hush the poor dumb fucks and don't explain anything. Leave a mess of curiosities and questions in their empty little heads for the dramatae to sift through on their time.

Combining these two:

"I hurt his pride, always a delicate thing, in man and dragon. Given what he's been through, I can understand not being the happiest person in the world. Or the most understanding. Would you mind telling me of your travels, of your troubles? Having someone listen might help."

I'm thinking one way to make the Lightbringers survive is to make them tough and strong enough to not only defeat whatever Shaper of Darkness but survive. Ruin their plans for good. Shape the story, change it. and shape Citadel in turn.
>>
>>24313641
You smile kindly, trying to wipe off some of the blood.

"I hurt his pride, always a delicate thing, in man and dragon. Given what he's been through, I can understand not being the happiest person in the world. Or the most understanding. Would you mind telling me of your travels, of your troubles? Having someone listen might help."

"Umm..." She fidgets.

"Go put the kettle one, little one." Grace says to her younger kid. "Then get the table ready."

"Would you like a nice cup of tea, or Grace has some chocolate power that's really nice with some warm milk." Lea offers.

The Girl just blinks. "You mean...just sit down...and talk and have tea? Like...like we were pretending to be normal people?"

"Honey, we'll never be normal, so we don't pretend." Peri says. "But we like tea."

"I prefer the chocolate stuff." Tricia says.

"Says the girl who puts have a hive's worth of honey in EVERYTHING that she drinks." Mari says.

"I have dietary needs!"

"Like how you need to have all your teeth rot out before you're thirty? I don't think Ssen wants a mate who has to gum her way each time you go d-" Peri says.

"That's enough Persephone!" Lea says. "We have guests, and tea. That's not suitable talk unless we're all drunk, and wont remember it."

The Girl starts to laugh at the bickering, and how your group carries on with setting up the tea, all the while dealing with the blood and the bodies. Then the laugher turns hysterical, and then to tears, and before you know it, the girl is holding on to you, sobbing her heart out.
>>
>>24313770
Oh boy ...

Just hold her and let her get it out of her system. We'll talk afterwords.

Hug her.

"There, there. Teatime isn't teartime, even though they're only one letter apart. So come now tell us what's hurting you so we can help."
>>
>>24313688
Good idea but, only if we can permanently free them from Citadel's grip. I think that here they are free from the influence, thus the confusion (S-stay A-away) not his usual bravado, but once off the mountain they will fall under Citadel's influence again.
>>
>>24313770
>Lea says. "We have guests, and tea. That's not suitable talk unless we're all drunk, and wont remember it."

We should take the opportunity, while they're here, to teach her the prayer we've used in the past to disrupt Citadel's influence.

>>24313817
I dont think they are ever under direct Citadel influence. note how we met them last time, they where the same, yet it was everything and everyone around them that was controlled by Citadel.

that and they must Freely sacrifice themselves to fight the Darkness, controlling them does not build their confidence etc.

"There, there. Teatime isn't teartime, even though they're only one letter apart. So come now, lets get something warm into you."

Tricia smiles at you. That's what Katherine said to you when you were alone and crying one time. The others had been teasing you, and it was just bad one day, so get said that to you and took you inside and you and Tricia had tea and honeycomb as Katherine told stories.

You all sit down with your drink. (Save Ted who's still on corpse disposal duty.) and after a bit you get the whole story from her.

Ava was part of a trading caravan family. Much like Wendy, they had a home in a small town that wasn't on the map, and they'd go to White Tree, or Stone Hall, or once in a blue moon Citadel, to exchange goods. It was a nice life. Then the Ghouls attacked them one day. They killed everyone, and then...then they started to act strange. They tied her up, and left her on an altar, then started to do these nonsense rituals with paint and dancing. They didn't even make sense for Ghouls, more like they were acting how people thought Ghouls acted.

That was when Adhan charged in. Swinging his blade, and saving the day. It was also when she realized that she had the gift of magic as well. A statement that confuses Mage, because he's been around other magic users, like Sophie and the official ones in the Staves Guild, and Ava doesn't...'feel' right. For lack of a better term.

They travelled and they picked up some friends, sadly Ava's actually forgotten their names at this point. There was this smooth guy that acted even moodier than Adahn is, a large muscle bound man that laughed a lot, this younger girl who was crazy smart, and things were...blissful. She looks back on those days with a little longing. They would walk around, fight monsters, and then Stone Hall happened. There were too many Ghouls, the healing potions that they had turned out to be poisioned, and everything went wrong. Adhan panicked, and people died.
>>
>>24313870
Well that would depend on the role they played in our group would it not? As far as I know the protagonist being taken in by a group much stronger than him that does not die after training him up and thus does not provide a source of vengeance is not a particularly commonly used trope.
I do see where you are coming from though.

>>24313804

>>
>>24313925
I think a "there there" or a small pat/rub on the back would be appropriate in here somewhere.

Because fuck. They are not good adventurers. They should not be doing these things.
>>
>>24313925
That's when things went so terribly wrong. Adhan got a lot more...physical, so did Ava. She says she loves him, but there's a pause when she says it. Then she's quick to leap to Adhan's defense whenever she complains about his moodiness.

Lea keeps shaking her head sadly whenever that happens.

The problem is that Ava doesn't really have any...well...character to her. She's younger than you are, and now all she knows is how to cast spells, and be the woman behind Adhan. She's just a blank slate for people to project their desires onto, and someone to support Adhan in combat, and afterwards. She's gotten used to people behaving strangely, only saying single sentences to her, always having to deal with monsters, or combat, and living with Adhan who says about five sentences to her on an average day.

"Okay, so say you complete this prophecy wall that you saw," Peri asks. "Then what?"

"Then what, what?"

"Well, what do you want to do with your life? Do you have hobbies, or a passion, or just an idea of what you'd like to do?"

Ava stares into her tea for a long while, and sniffs sadly. She shakes her head.

"I don't know...I don't think I've ever had time to think about that." She says. "You know Adhan is so amazingly mad at you. He still is. He can't stand that you saved Stone Hall and killed the Fell King. Those were the people that burnt his hometown to the ground. You've 'stolen his revenge' as he says, but you're a Paladin, and a good guy, he can't...make sense of it." Ava shrugs. "I always thought it made sense. There was an evil, so the army and the Paladins were sent, and you succeeded...but it feels so strange. What do you do, when you hate something so much, and then find that someone else has killed them." She sighs. "I want to go home, but the Old Sage says that there's a greater threat. A Shaper of Darkness out there that we're meant to defeat. I don't know, though. I want my family back, I want to go back home to Hollowdale."
>>
>>24314011
"I don't know about any 'Shapers of Darkness'...but I do know who's been 'Shaping' your story so far without your knowledge."
>>
>>24314011
"Then go home. This isn't who you are. Hell you haven't yet had a chance to find out who you are, and this sure isn't helping. Assuming your quest is even real, you still ought not be out here. Why do you follow the words of this Sage? Hes been wrong in the past according to you. Perhaps he is merely old and heard one to many Lightbringer stories?

>>24314011
"Personally? I'm so busy I'd thank them for the trouble, and move on to the next catastrophe. Because it's not about me, or any notion of "revenge": it's about doing what's right."

"As for what you're 'meant' to defeat... well, have you ever asked yourself 'why me'? Because it's far more relevant than you might think."

Having someone working on this so-called job who has not the passion nor the direction for it does no one any good."

"Then...what's the point of me?" She says. "How...how can you just look at a world that's open and empty, and just...go out? Adhan says that we have purpose, that we have meaning. That our lives have more meaning than just the farmer who wakes up every day and tills the land over and over again until he drops dead."

The others roll their eyes. Tricia mutters something under her breath.

"I don't think I could stand that...not knowing." Ava pulls her legs up onto her seat and holds her knees. "I liked it when we had purpose. Now...it's scary, and I don't think Adhan knows what to do either." She sniffs.
>>
>>24314130
"Adhan says this...Adhan says that. Do you have anything you want to do? If you are going to do something, do it because its what you want, not because someone is pulling your strings to do it."
>>
>>24314130
Maybe think about a purpose. Something beyond 'Because a Prophecy Said So.' Something that you want to fight for.

Personally, I find that 'Because the World Isn't Fair' makes for a good reason.
>>
>>24314167
I like this one.
>>
>>24314130
"Why? What was your purpose? Why do things keep happening to you that you can't explain? And most importantly, have you ever wondered why all the Lightbringer stories are the same?"
>>
honestly I'm not sure what path to take.

>>24314167
This will probably lead her on to be a better person, but also a better Lightbringer. And a better sacrifice

>>24314195
THis will probably backfire, and shatter her. Everything thats happpened has been a lie. How does one with nothing to fall back on reconcile with that?
>>
>>24314195
"Why? What was your purpose? Maybe think about a purpose. Something beyond 'Because a Prophecy Said So.' Something that you want to fight for."

"I don't WANT to fight!" Ava says in a slightly louder voice. For her, that's the equivalent of screaming and shrieking. "I'm SICK of this. I...I want to go home to Hollowdale, or find the remainder of my family, and just..." She shakes her head. "I don't know what, but I don't want to DO this ANYMORE!"

"Now, I have an important question for you to think about. Why do things keep happening to you that you can't explain? And most importantly, have you ever wondered why all the Lightbringer stories are the same?"

"Huh?" She says. "Well..." She shrugs. "I don't know...they're written by the same person?"
>>
>>24314206
Remember, they don't think of themselves as Lightbringers.
>>
>>24314206
Guys. Real paladin time.

3rd option.

A little bit of both. The world isn't fair, what was done to her and Adhan and the other light bringers by the Dramatae wasn't fair. Maybe they could come along with us for a little while while they clear their heads, see the world through a new lens, and maybe learn how they want to play the shitty hand they've been dealt.
>>
>>24314222
"Very astute of you. Now, tell me about the main characters of these stories."
>>
>>24314226
Be being a more complete person, she makes a better story. The story of the Lightbringer becomes more complete. The Citadel then gets more power from it. Hence being a better Lightbringer. I never said anything about her being aware of the fact..
>>
>>24314222
"True on both counts. More so than you could possibly know."

"Things happen around you and Grumpypants out there for a reason. I'm sorry, but explaining exactly why that is would put both of you in mortal danger... danger the likes of which you have never faced before. But remember, your story... and even his... they are none but your own. And by His light, be more careful from now on."
>>
>>24314222
"That's exactly correct. Even today. These masked men carrying you around were a part of that. If you truly wish, I could tell you about them, but I am almost certain you'd rather not want to know."
>>
>>24314238
she doesn't want to travel with us to the next adventure... she wants to go home

But that doesn't mean we can't help her get there.

"Then if you want to go home perhaps I can escort you there once we are done with our business in Bronze Peak."
>>
>>24314252
As for "breaking her", she's not going to think all of a sudden that her entire life follows a script of suffering and toil that ends in her self-sacrifice, because as far as she's concerned the Lightbringer stories have nothing to do with her.
>>
>>24314241
"Very astute of you. Now, tell me about the main characters of these stories."

"Oh, well...there's always a boy and a girl. Then there's the comic relief, usually a guy who eats a lot of food, but is strong. An annoying little smart-aleck, and a guy who's handsome but ends up betraying the heroes to the Shaper of Darkness." She nods. "That's always the same." She smiles. "That's what makes those stories so good. You know who's who, and it's fun...to...make...fun of them." She gets a thousand yard stare, as the horse crosses the finish line. "Oh. But...that's...I mean, we were called that by the old Sage, but he was a half-insane old man and the wall was just..." She shakes her head. "No...no...that doesn't make sense!"

"Welcome to our lives." Mari says.

"Sssh!" Lea snaps.

"Now, what happens at the end of every one of these stories?"

Summon the most apologetic smile we can and gently tell her, "Nothing happens without cause."

"So now you know... just, please. Don't try anything stupid. I mean, we've been fighting nonstop since we left home and WE have trouble dealing with the ones who have lead you on this path. And while we suspect they can't kill you, the life you've led until now would be a sweet paradise compared to the hell they'd plan for all of us if they knew that you knew."

"Just be careful."

The story was going along great until Stone Hall, but something happened with the Ghouls. Your friend was right, someone cheated. It all went wrong. Now everything's all up in the air and we're not sure where it's going to land. We're all sucked up in something old, and huge.

But right now, for the short term, you should find a reason to live. And keep living, no matter what comes your way. As for the long term, you have more friends than you think.

But it didn't happen did it? Not this time. That was our fault I am sorry. The Fell Lord wasn't supposed to be so strong. Because he was not the one you were supposed to face. DId you here of the Wasp Witch of Purple Sands? She was ot be your Shaper of Darkness, an easy challenge to overcome and die to. But thanks to us defeating her those orchestrating your story needed something else.

And thus the Fell King. But because the Dramatae were rushed they botched it. He was too strong, his daughter too cunning. She poisoned your healing potions and you fled. The story unravelled and we were there to clean up the pieces though we didn't realize it at the time.

When we encountered the Fell King he was little better then a puppet, reciting the lines ment for you and your companions. That was when WE realized something was wrong.

Tricia: So, are we ever going to get to Helen?
Lea: When we get there, maybe next time.
Tricia: Promises, promises.
Lea: So, next time on Lamia Quest, we continue to enlighten poor Ava, and make a decent attempt on Adahn.
Tricia: Don't know why we try, he's a jerk.
Lea: He's still a person under His Light, and worthy of our help...and a kick to the nuts, if he continues to be a jerk.
Tricia: Anyway, we help the Lightbringers, which brings consequences, and then return to Stone Hall.
Lea: Next episode will be on Friday, April 19th, 3-5pm PST. May His Light be with you.
Tricia: Night!

I was lucky. I encountered someone who knew of the evil we faced. Who had fought its servants and lost, but survived. She told me a great many things. But the most important was that the story of the Lightbringers wasn't one of good triumphing over evil. It was one of sacrifice. The darkness uses the souls and bodies of those Lightbringers who die to further its goals.

She also told me more of its servants, of the Dramatae. Who would do anything to see the Lightbringers repeat that old story. We journied from Stone Hall to Citadel and saw first hand the evil. Its hard to understand really. But In Citadel everything is too perfect. Until you peel away the layers and see the rot. I had to do everything in my power to see good men not be executed. I saw a girl nearly driven mad because she would not conform. My friends for a time were nothing more then parodies of themselves.

When I learned of this, as I took my mantle of paladinhood I vowed to end that darkness. But I had no idea how. That is why I came here, to the Dark Peaks. To learn more about the evil and how to stop it. And that is why we've run into you twice. First by accident, the second time by design of the Dramatae.

Night Echo, probably be late to the next one, tabletop game night has priority, but should make the later parts of it.

I noticed the general attitude of posters got a teensy fraction more dragon-y after that dragon conversation. I wonder if it's just simple prompting, or something more.

So, am I the only one moderately concerned about that laser miracle ray we shot?

I mean... is that magic? Was that magic? Was that just what light runes do? Or are we seriously pulling in-combat miracles?
>>
>>24314489
its dragon magic combined with runic magic. With a dash of His Light to round things off
>>
>>24314503
Step 1: be a dragon.

CHECK.
