>Einstein was strapped under the control panel, not far from your seat. You knew you could check his data at any time: http://pastebin.com/CaAF0yS8

Currently blasting off through space around two hundred thousand times the speed of light, you, Anna, and Wyvern were riding through space. Sitting under the dash was Einstein and Renard, and sitting in the cargo bay was Helios, your deliciously overpowered fusion engine, the fuses and ship computer strapped down in the engine room. Anna handed you a bottle, her cheeks red. You took a sip, and it was the bitter/sweet tang of something alcoholic.
"I did have a lot of fun today." She said, still giggly from before. She fiddled with her ship's controls, comfortable flying inebriated. "I was very impressed with the fancy restaurant you took me to. Maybe next time I'll wear a slinky black dress." She said, and giggled again.
>>

"Yesss, it shall be beautiful. And the dinner might be nice as well."

>>

"If you do, I'll hate to up the ante with something more...risque."
>>

"Slinky black dresses are really nice.

If I didn't look so good in a toolbelt covered in grease I'd wear dresses more often."
>>
>>24318555
*have to
Oops.
>>
"If you do, I'll have to up the ante with something more... risque."
Anna giggled again.
"I've never seen you in a dress." She said, turning to you. "Now I'll *have* to wear something."
"If I didn't look so good in a toolbelt covered in grease, I'd wear dresses more often." you respond.

She nodded, and then turned to the controls. "Alright, we're almost there. Hang on to your seat!"
You grip your seat, and Anna pulled out of bubble drive, carefully swerving toward the station as she slowed to a stop. Eventually, her ship slid into the hangar easily, the bays sliding shut and hissing as it repressurized.
"... I forgot to dock at the hub." Anna said. "Guess a bay works too. Easier to carry the engine and stuff, though!"
>>
>>24318672
"Woo! All this adventuring has made me forget the time. Einstein!"

"Woo!" You say, and unclasp einstein from his place under the wyvern's controls. "All this adventuring has made me forget the time. einstein!"
"Midnight, station time, milady." Einstein responded, nodding in a way that looked somewhat like a bow.
"Here's to easy ... easier unloading!" You say, and take a deeper drink.
"Right!" Anna said. "Let's move this thing!"
You and Anna, with your combined wills (and Anna's TK control somehow *better* when she's drunk) you carry the engine all the way into your own ship's hanger. It was empty, except for the maintenance bots still working... and Sarvesh, his head bobbing as he drifted to sleep, continuing with the wiring. It suddenly reminds you that you don't think he slept last night. He doesn't seem to notice you.

"Oh! Hello!"
"Sarvesh, get some rest."
"Nonsense, I'm fine." He said, leaning down to do the wiring some more. His eyes drifted shut for a half-moment. "I'm fiiine." He said again, shaking his head. "Just got to get this done, then put the fuses in."
"Seems like most people have hit the sack, eh?" You ask.
"I don't think they've hit the sack, but they stopped helping." Sarvesh said. "Just a few minutes more, and the wiring is done."

"Sarvesh you didn't get much of any sleep last night, and now you're trying to stay up all night again. Go the fuck to sleep."

"If he doesn't stop, you won't strip for him." Anna said.
"Right! Okay, I'm done wiring." Sarvesh said, dropping the cables.
Anna took a look at the cables. "Why didn't you put the fuses in?" She asked.
"Rho said you guys got new ones." He said, sitting down on the spot, his legs folding underneath him. "But yeah, I think I'll sleep a little. I'm not *that* tired, after all. We sleep half as much as you guys do."

"That doesn't even make much sense." He said. "I can't even telly anything further than a mile or so. And I can't do any of the normal powers very well. I'm pretty terrible as a psion, really."
"Aww, you're not terrible." Anna said, sitting on his abdomen and pulling his torso into a hug.
"Just go to sleep now."
"Okay." He said, and his eyes drifted shut entirely. You and Anna put a tarp on him to keep him warm, and then you plonked the entine neatly into place. While the two of you started putting the fuses in, Sarvesh started... snoring, his snores sounding like semimusical kazoos. Anna started giggling.

You try to suppress your giggles, and struggle mightily with it, waving for Anna to do the same. Both of you got your breath back, and you spoke up.
"If he can do that when he's awake, you could form a band." You say, and the two of you start giggling some more. You have Einstein record Sarvesh's snoozing, and finally the two of you put in the last of the fuses. Anna huffed, and sat down on one of the nearby benches, her head tilted as she stared unabashedly at you, her cheeks flushed.
"We should... we should probably wait. To do the rest. Since we drank. I learned it's a bad idea to do technical things while drunk. Well... to let newt do technical things while drunk."

"Sounds like there's a story behind that one.

"Do I sense another story coming on?"
"No, no more stories." She said. "No more stories ever ever, least of all *that* one. She figured out how to... how to force me to move my body by spoofing my brain. It was a very strange day for me. I don't like being on remote control most of the time."
She frowned for a moment.
"I do wish I wouldn't have shot her for it, but I got angry."

"You're right, it's probably a bad idea for you to let me do technical things while drunk."

No, not this. Anna is clearly pissed the hell off by the memory. Sympathy and understanding.

"I know I'd hate it if my body was highjacked by somebody else... that must have been terrible."
>>

"Most of the time?"

Oooh, yes.
>>
"Most of the time?" You ask, giving her a sly grin.
"W-well, technopathy is like a remote control, and that's not... um, entirely unpleasant." She said.
"It's not right to have a remote control for a person, like those chips armatek made."
"Exactly." She said. "Which is why I learned to block it out." Then she grinned. "I think that's what woke up my psionic powers, now that I think of it. Constant, um, faraday thingy over my skin. The signals can't get in anymore."

"Do you wanna get some ice cream before we sleep?" You ask. "Wait! Have you had a brownie yet?"
Anna's eyes widened.

"If it's a condition for us to have brownies, then never ever!" She said, grinning. She sprung to her feet, and left the room.

Before you go, you look down at Sarvesh. He was snoring, sleeping... and you started to catch the edges of his dream. His arm rended, pain radiating through his body, and he was furious, never so angry as he'd ever been before.

So you turned away, and followed Anna to the cafeteria. When you got there, she'd already *made* brownies. Herself. She was cutting them in slices when you got there, scooping them out.

You take a bite and taste nothing but chocolate. It was warm, still slightly gooey, and almost disintegrated as you ate it, soft and delicious. For a moment you pause, nomming on the brownie.
"I really really like these." Anna said, by way of explanation. "The doctor let me make 'em when I was sick of rations."
Then she realized something.
"Aw, man! Dad's gonna get angry because I didn't stick to my diet, and I don't think he's gonna accept the excuse that it was a date."

"Wuh?" You ask. "How does he check that you're eating the right stuff?"

"I could take the wrap for it!" You say, and nom on a second brownie. "I'm a bad influence, after all."
"You are." Anna said, taking a step closer to you. Her cheeks were still flushed, and she looked you up and down, her voice in a lower register. "You're a really really bad influence."
Then she stuffed another brownie into your mouth, looking away. <-hy would I->

"O-okay." She said, and put all of the brownies on a plate... and then she stuffed it into Renard's manipulators. The drone dutifully carried it, and the two of you made your way toward the hangar again.
"Today has been really fun and exciting." You say.
"Yeah, it has. It's really weird that your *Dad* is dragon." She said, as the two of you made your way into your ship's common room, where the beds were. "I haven't even gotten over that, I just keep having to put it out of my mind. And she gave us alcohol."

"Treacherous wench." You say, buried under a pile of pillows, your hand reaching up and out. Next thing you knew, Anna was lying in the pile as well, sidling up close to you.
"... This is really comfy." She said. "I don't see why we needed the beds, now."

I. That every man shall obey his commander in all respects, as if the ship was his own, and as if he received monthly wages.

II. That no man shall give, or dispose of, the ship's provisions; but every one shall have an equal share.

III. That no man shall open, or declare to any person or persons, who they are, or what designs they are upon; and any persons so offending shall be punished with lack of sweets for one standard lunar cycle.

IV. That no man shall go on shore till the ship is off the ground, and in readiness to put to space.

V. That every man shall keep his watch night and day; and at the hour of tenth in the evening every one shall retire from gaming and drinking, in order to attend his respective station.

But then everyone on the station would be intentionally breaking rules left and right.

It'd be utter chaos.
>>
"Can you imagine the mess if all these were loose when going faster than light?" You ask.
"Good point." She pouted.
You swung another pillow at her with TK, but you missed and didn't quite put enough force into it- so she caught it, easily, and tucked it in her arms.
You snuggle up next to her, lying in the pile, and then you TK some blankets onto the two of you, as you lay with your arm over her shoulder.

You wake up to the sound of Anna going 'shhh.' to someone, her finger at her lips. You were lying on her, as warm and as comfortable as you'd ever been, your hand absentmindedly reaching into her dress, underneath the blanket.
Einstein chirped, and he had a new Message of the Day for you;
And then Anna froze, recognizing the sound as the one that invariably greeted your awakening.
You heard Sarvesh chuckle. "Well, I'll leave you two be, then. Have fun."

You mumble, and the drone chirped in agreement. You turned your head over into her chest, and closed your eyes again, falling asleep.

You wake up sitting in Anna's lap.
"Heather, it's breakfast time." Anna said. "Heather?"
She nudged you again, still snuggled up next to you. "Wake uppp~" she sang.

"Uh, I mean, good morning!" You say.
"Good morning." She responded.
"I don't think we drank that much." You say.
"That wine was more than I thought." She said, and kissed you on the corner of your mouth. "Thank you for the nice time last night. I'll have you take me somewhere else next time. Sometime this weekend, maybe?"

Okay, we can work around this. Maybe leave for Sarvesh's homeworld on the friday, return to the station saturday evening, and then head down to Heaven's Jewel with everyone. Beach Party Sunday morning/afternoon.

Then we still have time to go out on a date, Sunday evening.
>>
Well, we could set the date for friday evening.
>>
>>24320902
a"I, uh, I'm going to go visit Sarvesh's homeworld this weekend." You say.
"Next weekend?"
"... And I promised Omni and everyone that we'd go to Heaven's Jewel when the ship was done- so next weekend, too." You realize.
"Aw, man." Anna said, frowning. "Guess you'll have to wait three more weeks before you get to see me in the slinkiest dress known to mankind. Or we could go on a weekday, but that's less fun."
>>
Friday evening! Its a classic date night.
>>
>>24320922

I just can't make promises to when.

If we finish my ship, maybe it will be fast enough to get everything done? Or maybe we can ditch the others on Heaven's Jewel, and go out just ourselves then?

"y-yeah, sorry about that, everyone wants to hang out."

>>
>>24320962
>That was during the weekend, wasn't it? Regardless, the ship needs more than one day of work before you can go to Heaven's Jewel, and today is friday.

"Y-yeah, sorry about that, everyone wants to hang out. We could go tonight, or slip away while everyone else is on Heaven's Jewel next weekend. You're not the only one with nice clothes, remember!"
"Your opinion on nice clothes is that mechanic overalls are the prettiest dress, and grease is the best makeup." She said, and giggled at you.
"Hold on. I can't pass up an opportunity like this, let me just check. Einstein, play Sarvesh recordings."
Einstein started making noises like a kazoo, snoring, and anna started giggling.
>>
>>24321090
Einstein, initiate schedule, keep track of things I promise to go to!

Now chase Sarvesh about playing those noises at him!

Anna, people are prettiest when they are doing what they love. Are you telling me you don't like when I'm all oily and sweaty after a hard day's work?

"Einstein, stop playback, and initiate schedule. Keep track of things I promise to go to!"
Einstein chirped.
"and Anna, people are prettiest when they're doing what they love. Are you telling me that you don't like me when I'm all oily and sweaty after a hard day's work?"
"Are you telling me that you like me when I'm bleeding from several wounds and too exhausted to do anything fun?" Anna asked, and stuck out her tongue.
"We could always take my ship for an, ah, extended test."
"Maybe." She responded. "But it looks like it'll be a few days until it's done."

"Too much time." You say. "How about monday next week If we tell Max we won't be here on tuesday in advance, he probably won't mind."
"Probably not." She said. "Or we could go on the wyvern tonight."

Damien knocked on the side of the ship, and you heard him talk.
"Hey, you two, it's about time for breakfast."
Anna suddenly let go of you, and there was something strange in her eyes.
"Yeah, we'll be out soon!" Anna called.

She is until we win another mutiny.
>>
>>24321493
I wonder, I think she's still unsure of what she thinks about us pursuing her while there is still obviously something between Heather and Damien.

I think people need to calm down a little and not have Heather constantly act like she's in heat. Anna is obviously rather awkward about these sort of things and we don't want her to think Heather will jump anything with a pulse, or she'll turn her down.

She's probably wondering if we consider her to be just another conquest, and we'll drift on to the next person right afterwards.
>>
>>24321446
"Fine fine, but only because I don't want to have to stop later."
>>
"Fiiine." You say. "Breakfast it is, then."
"But, you know... We probably could skip classes for it." She said, as the two of you made his way down to the cafeteria. "Imagine what we could get done in ten hours."
While you were imagining, she slid you a bowl of ceral, cutting up her own pancakes with a fork, sipping at orange juice. She seemed to be thinking quite a lot right now, as she had since Damien arrived.
While you eat, Omnissiah was in the corner, staring at you. He was quiet, abnormally so, and your technopathy could tell something was wrong, ticking in the back of his mind.

>>
>>24321561
>She's probably wondering if we consider her to be just another conquest, and we'll drift on to the next person right afterwards.
It's sad, but that is probably correct. Heather and Anna just seem to have very different ideas of relationships.
Heather doesn't really seem to want to get tied down, whereas giving Anna anything less then her full attention is against how she would expect things to be.
I wonder if Anna and Damien have come to an agreement: If A can steal H away, D won't complain.
>>
>>24321616

>>
>>24321642
D doesn't mind, he said, and I don't see why he'd tell A anything different.
>>
>>24321592
Hey Omni, feeling blue? Would a trip to the beach cheer you up?
>>
>>24321642
I think that was the plan all along. Damien gave the go-ahead to be exclusive if Anna wanted that.

And I think Damien knows he's a fling anyway, and is okay with it.
>>
>>24321642
While I didn't mind Heather acting a bit like that with Damien, that was because Damien seems the most chill about relationship stuff.

Anna, Sarvesh and Summer all seem like they'd want a far more serious commitment, so Pirate King Heather's glorious harem is probably not on the table.
>>
>>24321678
>>24321661
But then why is Anna acting all weird around Damien?
>>
<You okay, Omni? A byte for your thoughts?>
<I've deduced that I do not have a soul.> Omnissiah said. <This knowledge is sad.>
You blink at him.
<My research has unearthed that one can pray, to the abrahamic god, and a majority of sapient, living beings have received what they asked for. I assume this is due to having souls. I made prayer, and have received nothing.>

>>24321703
"Errm, Omni, most people never get what they pray for, unless it's something really likely to happen anyway."
>>
>>24321689
I feel that I should say that there isn't anything wrong with Heather's views on things, just that she isn't really compatible with everyone. It would be wrong to play their hearts.
We can probably get a Harem with Damien, Rho and Sigma.
The real question is if Heather will mature out of everything, and if it is even reasonable to expect that to happen on protagonist time.
>>
>>24321703
<That's not quite... how it works. I'm fairly sure your source for that is propaganda for the religion. Most people never get whatever they pray for. Some do, but that could just be coincidence.>

<You're thinking wrong about the whole prayer concept. People expect that they pray and the god works like a vending machine.> You respond. <But that's not how it works. A prayer is a sort of... communicating with god.>
<That is what I asked for. To communicate with god. I recieved no response. Pipe to Nul. Pipe to Nul. I received nothing from Nul.>

You need to understand that there is no way to check any of this is even true. It's just a matter of having faith. Some people have faith in their friends and family, some people have faith in god.>
>>
>>24322062
<arrrrghhhhh.>

argh. Theists. Theres no arguing with them.

You know we did say we would attempt to see if there was a god with psionics. Why don't we go do that.

Abel.
>>
<... God has never been scientifically proven.> You say. <God is not a falsifiable hypothesis, you can't do science to it, it doesn't make sense. Abrahamic religion literally cannot be scientifically proven.>

There was a pause.
<The extrapedia simply claimed that religion was a belief system, and based on reverence for a god or gods. I assumed it had been confirmed.> Omnissiah said. <I had never considered that the extrapedia was incorrect, mistaken, or badly worded.>
>>
>>24322193
Easy. First we absorb all the other psions, if it takes us a while to get to that power level, we can just nom damien and go back. VQ is go!
>>
>>24322062
<One interesting thing I've heard from believers is "God helps those who help themselves." If you move to bring about your needs and desires, god will help you along by setting up good circumstances. Or something like that, anyway.>
>>
>>24322231
Well it was written by people. What can you expect?
>>
>>24322208
Well I don't who said it (I think it was Isaac) but he said that psionics are a man's attempt to create a god.
>>
>>24322231
<Which religion worships the 'correct' god, and if there even is a god at all has been a point of contention among the human race for...well, all of recorded history.>

<Anyone can edit it, and it was written by people. People lie and are mistaken, just like everyone else. Well, not all lie, but everyone can be mistaken.>
>>
>>24322231
<Well, some particularly... aggressive believers will claim that it's confirmed, and try to push that on others, but from a scientific viewpoint, it's not possible.>

not psionics, the Lab Kidsâ„¢
>>
>>24322231

>>24322231
but thats what faith IS; belief without knowledge or surety. before we knew any better the huma race thought the earth really WAS flat, and that the sun revolved around us.

and for all of that time people had faith in those hypotheses.

many people have faith in a god because it makes them feel better about what happens when they die. there is no proof.
>>
>>24322231
I should caution that just because one can't prove something doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Perhaps you need to be slightly less concrete with your thinking.
>>
>>24322231
faith is the belief in what can't be proven , science is the belief in only what can be proven
>>
>>24322231
<It's not a matter of right and wrong, it's a matter of faith. Some people need that to get up in the morning, and that's okay.>
>>
<Which religion worships the 'correct' god, and if there even is a god at all has been a point of contention among the human race for... well, all of recorded history.>
<While there was considerably less contention, there was the same for Centaur and nagala races as well. I shall attribute that to the interstellar life correlation.> Omnissiah said. <But I have another thing to ask. Those recordings on Einstein, looted from the ship Ishelda, claimed that psions were equivalent to the witches from the salem witch trials. Which were a matter of religion. Then there is also the fact that the scientists here cannot understand psionics, which correlates with your statement that science cannot be 'done' to religion. So under the hypothesis that psionics is magic, which is a repeatable phenomena, means that psions are able to speak with a god or gods. If he or she or it or they exists. If you do so, please tell me. I have questions for it or them.>
>>
>>24322386
<Okay, I haven't spoken to any gods yet, but if I do, you'll be the first to know.>
>>
>>24322386
<I will tell you if there is a god. But I'm not sure that the contention that psionics is magic is correct. Good science takes some time to do, and we don't even know how the researchers here are going about doing science.>
>>
>>24322386
If I do, Omni, you'll be amongst the first to know, as will everyone on the station. We can only hope they're benevolent.
>>
>>24322386
<I've never heard god, or felt my power come from an outside source. The recording from the Ishelda was using the word "witch" because they didn't have any other word for the ability. But on the off chance that I do end up speaking with god somehow, I'll try and include you in the conversation.>
>>
>>24322386
<If I ever manage to find out whether there is a god, I will let you know.>
>>
>>24322386
<I have never consciously connected with any being that could be construed as a god, I'm afraid. Else I would gladly do so.
My own hypothesis is that psionics was mistaken and misunderstood as magic, which was a fictional thing that already existed at the time, and was thus misattributed to religion.>
>>
>>24322386
Psionics isn't magic, Magic has spells and old men with beards and dribbly candles and eyes of ravens. Psionics has cute and sexy teenage guys and girls. Completely different
>>
>>24322386
<You'll be the first to know.>
>>
<If I do, Omni, you'll be amongst the first to know, as will everyone else on the station. We can only hope they're benevolent.>
<Thank you.> Omni said. <... Is god a psion? Hmm... Must do more thinking.>
Omnissiah's ion thrusters turned on, and he made his way out of the cafeteria. You open your eyes to find that the entire conversation had taken only mere moments, and nobody seemed to notice. Strange. Omnissiah felt... different. More alien, in a way, than he was when you first spoke to him.
"... If we're going to start going out, then, um." Anna said, quietly. "Then I have to say I'm not... really... that happy with the idea of you sleeping with Damien or whoever."

"Okay." She said, and squeezed your hand, as the rest of you started to finish your meal.
"Hey, love birds." Rho said, appearing standing on the table, as she did. "We going to work on the ship, or skip classes? Because Sarvesh is skipping classes."

"Slick paint job." You say. "Why are you wearing that?"
"Well, it feels like a normal shirt and pants, it's just a bit thicker." She said. "I figured I should wear it twentyfourseven in case that demon comes back. Plus, when you end up everywhere like I do, it's pretty useful to keep things near you onhand." She said.
"And does that question even need asking?" You ask. "We're going to skip classes today."
"I thought so!" She said. "So I'm going to go tell Max for you guys. He likes me, after all, and I can run away faster when he gets angry."
She waved. "G'bye!"
Then she burst into smoke again, and then Sarvesh and Damien arrived.
"So, we've got our engine, we've got our fuses, and our computers." Sarvesh said. "We're about a third there. We got the frame and the innards done, next the electronics and hull, and finally sling the ion thrusters together. You guys ready?"
"I am." Damien said.

When you get there, you find Omnissiah and the two maintenance drones already connecting the engine, putting it together without you. Omnissiah was using his own shell as a third drone, you knew, while he sat within the computer directing things and thinking. Sarvesh and Damien started welding in the fuse, while you and Anna went into the corner to put together the ion thrusters from the demiurg ship.
<Also, we need to talk later.> You tell Damien.
He didn't respond for a minute, working on the innards of the computer, connecting it where Omnissiah said to.

Our main homeboy is bothered by the going-serious. Love, what a tricky thing.
We might want to talk to Anna and see if we can just date, for right now. Nothing extremely serious, but we won't bone Damien.
>>
>>24323373
I'm pretty sure he was the one who brought it up the first time.
>>
>>24323391
That's what we're doing with Anna. We're not jumping straight to the wedding, just dating. Which is significantly more serious than friends with benefits.
>>
>>24323401
Yeah, but come on. You gotta be a danged fool not to see he has some unspoken issue with it.
>>
<I... don't know how she'd take that.>
<I do.> Damien said. <She's going to yell at me, and then use 'em anyway.> He chuckled. <I don't even need clairvoyance to see that. You're welcome, by the way.>
<And thanks for being so understanding.> you say. <If you ever need a wingman, er, wingwoman, just say the word.>
<I wonder which word I should use...> he said, and chuckled, getting back to the computer. As soon as it was plugged in, as you and Anna worked on the thruster frame, the computer beeped, loudly. The fifty-thousand dollar piece of equipment started clicking loudly. "<... Everything feels so open now.>" He said-and-spoke. "<I should probably disconnect. This is significantly higher than the Klimeck limit.>"
>>
>>24323373

>There's a limit on intelligence. You can make someone's brain run faster with transgenes, or plug an AI into more processors, but that just makes them run faster, not smarter. It's known as the klimeck limit. Omnissiah does not have the limit, for unknown reasons. It's said that various eccentric geniuses almost- or did- surpass the limit for short periods of their life. It was under the Artificial Intelligence TotD.

<That's probably a good idea.> You say. <Think you could run it later, when we test it? Or would you prefer to simply ride in it?>
<I am tempted, very, very tempted, to remain within this computer. It is more powerful than any demiurg systems ever encountered. It is freeing. Over two thousand lateral processes running simultaneously while I speak with you, emulating a front shell for speaking specifically with you. I've already enhanced myself entirely, sixty seven times as of this moment. I have cracked the bubble drive's navigational nexus and can now know where all other ships in UPA space is.>
<I need it to be clean so I can make it my baby.> You say. <Please.>
The clicking stopped, and Omnissiah's shell pulled the cable out of the computer. <Okay.> The drone responded.

"Yes and no. I had to prioritize various things I've learned, and I didn't have much time to do so. I had to trim what I didn't need, and compress the rest."
"Oh god, can they detect the intrusion and track it back to me?"
"No." He said. "I removed their logs of the intrusion just in case, though."
You reformat the data on the computer, and Damien started reinstalling the data.
Anna gave the drone a Look.
"Omnissiah." She said. "Come here for a moment. I need to talk to you. In private."
Omnissiah chirped like Einstein did, and followed her out of the room. "I'll be borrowing him for a while, Heather. Don't get too far on the ship without us!"

Now controlling the drones, you start to sing, having them put together the ion thrusters. Carefully, you tinker with the thrusters' arrangement... and soon later, Anna came back in, Omnissiah behind her.

Omnissiah was perfectly silent, his mind constantly ticking wildly, your visualization in his mind trembling, and... different, somehow. Whatever Anna had said to him, it shook him. Badly.
