You are Princess Lydia Tannhäuser Von Cygnus Gates the third, duchess of Tannhäuser and executive director of the Royal Rocketry Corps of Midland. Today is your 17th birthday, you have been managing the corps for a whole year now. Putting an artificial satellite into orbit, and returning pictures from the edge of space.

Your friend and rival, Ms Jakisan Kenaway of the Merikan city state, is also managing her own program. She was going to put a satelite of her own into orbit as a birthday gift to you, but she's been having a series of accidents and regrets that it will not be in orbit on time.

How shall you celibate your birthday?
>A lavish party, invite everyone and spend the turn celebrating.
>A small party, invite just a few people and give the RRC a day off.
>No party, there is WORK to be done.
>>
>>24347486
>A small party, invite just a few people and give the RRC a day off.
We must follow protocol. And the RRC deserve a day off.
We must thank Ms. Kenaway for the sentiment, and express our regret and sympathy for the accident at her launch facility. And tell her that we shall triple check the wiring in our rocket before launch.

Small party. We have to keep up appearances after all, we've been looking a bit too military lately.
>>
>>24347684

No argument here, but it's probably warm enough to call it a beach party and take a moderate amount of clothes off (within decency, of course). Everyone should get the day off.

Who will be invited and what will you wear to the party?

>Frilly dress (standard outfit for a princess, no bonus or penalties)
>Fashionable dress (A trend setting outfit, makes you look cooler, but could be considered tacky)
>Dress uniform (The standard RRC officer uniform you have been wearing, makes you look professional at the risk of making you look overly militaristic)
>Bathing dress (A one piece swimsuit, you'll be able to swim, but might be considered immodest)
>Other
>>
>>24347969

I'm torn between frilly and fashionable. I think it's overdue time to do some humanitarian outreach to improve our image.
>>
>>24347969
We shall invite our family, of course, certain high-ranking nobles and ministers, the prime minister, and Ms. Kenaway.
Also we shall invite all of the participants of the tournament.
We assume that our usual entourage is in attendance.

And we shall wear the Fashionable Dress.
We don't want too many frills down by the beach; the sand would be horrible.
>>
>>24347969

Beach party. Bathing dress of course!

Whatever we wear will get splashed with salt water anyway, might as well be OK with it. Most of the military personnel is Navy and they will understand. If we happen to look alluring in it, yay?
>>
>>24347969
A nice frilly dress is the way to go for the party, dont want to look very militaristic in all situations it is a relaxed enviorement afterall.
>>
2 votes fashionable, 1 vote frilly, 1 vote bathing.

Shall the press be invited?
>>
>>24348530
Eh....yes. But we shall impress upon them that this IS our birthday, and that they are to behave themselves.
>>
>>24348530

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CENrhhXqjg0 This needs to happen within 3 years.

I'd say no press.
>>
>>24348563
>>24348606
A tiebreaker is required for the press.

Ms Kenaway writes to tell you that she's too busy overseeing the reconstruction of her launch site to come, and apologies greatly. She tells you that the satellite she had been launching would have allowed her to send a radio signal to you on your birthday, if it hadn't exploded. The King and queen are on there way however, as are both of your brothers, and several high ranking nobles.
>>
>>24349054
>The King and queen are on there way however, as are both of your brothers, and several high ranking nobles.

Oh darn, can't relax :)
>>
>>24349054
We're at an impasse with the press, and I don't know if other players will be arriving.
>>
>>24349192
I count Space Core, Seneschal, and Anon, that's all three players I have :p
>>
>>24349243
Well, if no one else speaks up in another 20 minutes, you'd better just flip a coin.
>>
>>24349243

I say we allow the press in to counter any untold rumors. Let's play up our new friendship with Prince Orion. We are multicultural as hell up ins here.
>>
>>24349355
Your father advises you not to invite the press.

Where shall you hold the party?
> Tannhäuser manor?
>The airfield?
>The beach?
>The ale hall?
>The Airfield?
>Somewhere else?
>>
>>24349451

BEACH PARTY! :3
>>
>>24349451
Then we shall not invite the Press.
We shall hold the party down at the beach.
We shall arrange for a properly lit and floored area.

The Maiale Volante and the Staberinde both arrive in the lagoon, instantly doubling the island's population. Honor guards announce the king's arrival and everyone salutes as your father exits the aircraft. and steps onto the pier, followed by the queen, and lastly your little brother and his nursemaid.
>>
>>24349820

Hopefully we did dress for the occasion. A priority should be to introduce Prince Orion and Maia to our mother.
>>
>>24349820
We shall welcome them to the island, and introduce Dame Cobham, who shall be the first Midlander in space, and visiting royalty Prince Orion and Princess Maia.
>>
>>24347486
I think you may have made the Classic Blunder, because I have no interest in the RP but that image is goddamn GORGEOUS.
>>
>>24349931

A quick recap: This is a 1920s Art Deco world (without fascism, by and large) in which apparently the space race is led by highborn teenage girls in classy uniforms.
>>
>>24349869
Also arriving on the Maiale Volante is Mister Luxon. Who is familiar with the customs of the eastern tribes, having interacted with them during the war as a combat medic in the Royal marines. He actually speaks there language and is able to instruct them on how to address the king.

Orion and his friends have finally been convinced you are not a celestial maiden, but they still consider it to be your fate to complete the legend symbolically.

>>24349931
It's only a classic blunder when the picture is not related.
>>
>>24349979

Much as being considered a celestial maiden by the cute native guy was flattering, that probably makes life easier for everyone.
>>
>>24349979
We shall introduce Dame Cobham as the victor of the recently held tournament.
We shall lead them down to where the party is being held.
Remember that this is a party where our Father is in attendance, and so remember to stay on our best behavior.
>>
>>24350270
Dam Cobham does her best to present herself properly to the king. Coming from a poor backround and earning her title through military service, she has come a long way.
>>
Your father nods slightly for both of them, showing neither approval nor disapproval as usual. He does however publicly wish you a happy birthday and the best of luck in your endeavors.
>>
>>24350347

We should also take our mother aside and quickly explain about Prince Orion's story.
>>
>>24350397
We shall proper respect and thank our Father for his well wishes.

>>24350421
Seconding this once we have a moment.
>>
>>24350421
Once the party is well underway, you manage to get your mother alone. You ask her about the story.

"Hmm? You think it's not a coincidence that two cultures happen to share a similar story?" She asks in the same voice you remember Gaia wearing at the Astrologer's meting.
>>
>>24350495
"Please, mother. If what is out there truly left such mark, then how can the cultures of our world help but have similar stories regarding it?"
>>
>>24350495

"It definitely gives it weight! In that sense we're relieved that the Merikans are also starting a rocket program, two groups of eyes are better than one. What if the Huns do, though..."
>>
>>24350574
"How did man know the earth revolves around the sun? If one were to simply look up at the sky with no prior knowledge, they would assume that the earth is the center of the cosmos, and the stars are all affixed to a circular dome." She explains, going on a tangent, "but we know that's not the case, we know the earth revolves around the sun, the same way the moon revolves around the earth, and we have had names for some of the stars in the sky long before we had telescopes to see them. Until recently, the astrologers have been able to perfectly predict every movement of the heavens... Why do you think that is Lydia?"
>>

"Either some things move with very long periods and they haven't been recorded properly if they've ever been seen, or it's the scary option."
>>
>>24350722
Second.
>>
>>24350722
"Well, the only way you can know for sure is to find out yourself. You've always been an alchemist, not an astrologer. Pallas has seen to that. If you really want to know why the easterners have similar stories involving the moon, perhaps you should become the celestial maiden yourself?"

>>24350581
"Oh I'm sure the Huns will have there own rockets soon enough. Your Suthish friend's program is funded by all the city states, Including Suthhaus and Skaggar. Two states who are still under Nordic influence. I wouldn't be surprised if some of her work ends up being funneled to them. You might want to be careful."
>>
>>24350824

"We have every intention to into space, but it'll be a while before untrained people can safely fly!"
>>
>>24350824
"We have every intention of finding out, Mother.
"As for protection, we have Michel's patrols, and some of the guards here. Do you think it necessary to have a larger and more permanent military presence?"
>>
>>24350924
"We can't make that decision for you Lydia, we're just your mother, and the queen of the greatest empire in the history of the world." She winks. "But consider what kind of burdens you are taking with you into space. If I recall correctly, making a rocket as light as possible is preferable?" She answers your question indirectly. "Can you afford to drag the Navy and Air Force with you into the heavens? Would you fly faster and higher without them?"

She pauses for a while to let that sink in before asking. "Soo, tell us more about this Prince Orion."
>>
>>24351066
"Ah, yes, the Prince. Quite a surprise, when he appeared in the middle of the tournament, and asked to participate.
"Some may have been fooled by his lack of Anglish, but within that head of his is a formidable mind. With proper training, we believe he will be an excellent Void Knight."
>>
>>24351066
>She pauses for a while to let that sink in before asking. "Soo, tell us more about this Prince Orion."

He's cute and has gone a really long way on a dinky boat to meet us?
>>
>>24351133
I know we're only 17, but we're supposed to be more mature than this.
You know, what with being thrust into the position of secretly becoming the X-COM Commander.

"I see..." The queen is interrupted by Amelia who enters, wearing one of those scandalous two part bathing suits so popular in the west these days. "Oh, I'm sorry your highness." She curtsies to the queen. "I was looking for the princess, people are starting to wonder where she had gone too."
>>
>>24351371
"Ah, of course. We must not keep our guests waiting. We shall have an opportunity to talk at length later, Mother. For now, we have our obligations to fulfill."
>>
>>24351371
Reassure her that we'll return to the party soon enough.
And then we tell the Queen about Orion's impressive performance at the tournament.
>>
>>24351472
"I see..." The queen listens for a bit, before telling you that you ought to get on with the party.
>>
>>24351515
Then we shall do so. Make sure to socialize a little. Meet with the ministers and nobles, and have Mister Luxon assist Prince Orion with any matters of propriety that might come up.
>>
>>24351640
Mister Luxon and Prince Orion are getting along well. Apparently Luxon met his mother during the war.

Also at the party is Lady Ethelstan from the appropriations committee, although she informs you that the committee is being reshuffled around in the next year and that she'll be going back to her old district. She asks how Savard is doing.

Savard has had very little work to do as Lord Governor of such a small island populated mostly by military men and women, and has also taken up position as brewmaster at the local beer hall.
>>
>>24351797
Let Lady Ethelstan know that Lord-Governor Savard is doing well, and that the tropical environment has done wonders for his nerves.

Mingle a little more, see who's going to be on the Appropriations Committee in the coming year, if we can find out.
>>
>>24351830
This sounds sensible. Perhaps if we might persuade her to sample some of his product, it might set her mind at ease
>>
>>24351830
Ethelstan tells you that it's too early to tell, but that she'll keep you informed if you wish. She does however have one question for you. She wants to know why the Air Force has a battery of Mk3s stationed at Fort Adler. She though you had moved your operations to this island.
>>
>>24351908
We shall tell her that they are most likely preparing against the Huns. The Mk3 was originally a military design, so the Air Force taking the design back and using it should be no surprise, especially as the Royal Rocketry Corps is no longer developing military weapons.

"Apparently they developed a new guidance system together with the navy. It's interesting to see them working together like that, I can't believe they managed to actually co-operate. Clay must be keeping them in line."
>>
>>24352038
NUKE IT! WAR CREATES PROGREEEEEEESS!!
>>
>>24352159
The Navy was interested in the guidance system that we use for unmanned missions to space; they likely use a variation of it.
Our designs are open to any branch of the state to use if they can find a use, after all.

Speaking of uses, we have begun experiments with two sources of power, photovoltaic and radio-thermal. Both are excellent for use in remote areas to power radios.
Perhaps with this weather stations will be better able to send their findings to be analyzed.
>>
>>24352490
"Interesting, I look forward to seeing the future results of your research. And once again, happy birthday your highness."

Allright, it's getting late, is there anything else people want to do before I go to bed? Any other NPCs you want to talk to? Just a warning, I won't be running again till Tuesday because of class and work.
>>
>>24352598
Is there a Minister of Defense that came? Perhaps we can speak with him about whether the Huns are starting their own rocket program?
>>
>>24352671
There is no evidence to suggest that, beyond what your mother told you about Suthaus and Skaggar.
>>
>>24352713
Alright, I'm more concerned with getting a manned mission up into orbit.
How is Dame Cobham holding up?
And wasn't one of the contestants trying to prove that women are as good as men? How does she feel, after losing herself yet there still being a woman be the first human in space?
>>
>>24352881
Lieutenant Lytton is currently drunk off of her ass, and seems to think the whole thing is hilarious.

As for Cobham, she's doing just fine, taking a break from her intense training to join the party. She is however kind of bummed out that her diet is being controlled.
>>
>>24353015
Well, that did not go as well as hoped.
We shall remind Dame Cobham that there shall be plenty of time to enjoy meals after she has completed her mission in space.

And I think that's it.
>>
Good night then. Next turn starts on Tuesday.
>>
>>24351797
>Apparently Luxon met his mother during the war.
oh boy
>>
>>24353137

thank you! (Sorry, minor family emergency)
