During the so-called ‘Cursed’ 21st Founding in the 36th Millennium, after the now destroyed planet Inculaba yielded mysteries still unknown to the majority of the Imperium, the 999th Space Marine Chapter was founded. In stark contrast to the other cursed Chapters, which have been plagued with gruesome mutations, often forcing the hand of the Inquisition, this particular Chapter was only disadvantaged with a faulty Occulobe. This fault meant that the eye and Occulobe implant would only work as normal with extra fluid; which in turn led the bodies of the Marines to overcompensate and produce more tears and as such, gave the Marines a constant look of sadness and sorrow.

Thus, the Mourning Sons were born.

Please note, that this is not the Crybaby marines, nor is it emo-wankery or anime bullshit. The Marines main ability is that they are perceptive, the more experienced among them gain the ability to perceive things on a completely different level, and as such are able to see the real misery and suffering of the galaxy in the state that it's in.

Pic related is our 3 main armor choices at the moment.

Let's fluff!
>>
>>24377710
so, we no longer see the souls of ones we slay?
>>
I caught the second thread and found this;

"For every treason, a heretic dead! For every wasted life, a tear is shed!"

This is going to be our Chapter motto/warcry.

A bit more information:
>Fleet based
>I am writefagging the circumstances of this, will also include our Chapter Master Fovus and Brother Jeremiah, who is our Master of Sanctity
>Still deciding on who we are founded from
>The Occulobes ability is awesome in combat, gives us the ability to read body-language like no other, we can sense attacks, misdirection and manuevours.
>>
>>24377744
Well frankly I like it, but we had a lot of mixed opinion on it yesterday so we may have to tone down the whole soul/true nature thing.
>>
Another couple ideas from the previous threads that were being thrown around:

>Chapter Master is the most senior Chaplain, we want the most discerning to be in charge.
>Having Company Captains become Chaplains, each is responsible for scrutinizing the Company.
>We recruit from anywhere we can, our skills mean we can see the recruits moral fibre, which for us, is more important than anything else.
>Not on great terms with the Inquisition, due to our abilities.
>Great terms with the Mechanicus, we need loads to keep the fleet based Chapter going.
>Our previous Master of Sancitity, Brother Jeremiah, witnessed a cultist who would have been phenomenal if loyal, but wasted it on Chaos. His eyes then burst aflame as he judged the cultist, Ghost Rider style. When we discovered him his eyes were glowing and his cheeks and mouth were scarred beyond belief due to the fire, leading him to be known as the 'Weeping Prophet'.
>>
>>24377770
well, true nature would be...troublesome
imagine situation
>a marine is about to strike a mere cultist
>a glimpse of his terrified eyes meet marines eyes
>marine is struck with vision
>a lowly imperial citizen
>work quotas, fear, obedience, famine, poverty plague his mind
>his brother was executed for being a suspect in heresy, he was surely innocent but nobody could say a word because they would be executed for defending a heretic
>his parents were shot by arbites near main cathedral when large amount of pilgrims gathered near closed doors of mentioned cathedral and it kinda looked like a riot
>his whole life was misery until cultists staged a revolt against rich and oppressive dictator-like governor, which he joined
>cult recruited him into his ranks, he find out about philosophy of chaos
>chaos...is freedom...chaos is nature of any human, chaos is doing what you like without anyone judging you for it
>for a man who was oppressed since birth this was fantastic, a dream come true
>he never believed in chaos gods, he never worshiped them, all he wanted is to live a better life
>marine sees this and stops his blow, understanding the errors of imperial cult and imperial regime
>marine either suicides later fearing the corruption or becomes renegade
>>
>>24377903
also
>fighting a chaos space marine
>vision sequence
>he sees immense ranks of legion astartes
>he sees primarchs before the fall
>he saw emperor himself, alive and well
>the ceremony where emperor made horus his right hand
>it was glorious
>then a betrayal
>he understood exactly why this particular legion gone to heresy
>he saw visions of istvaan where brother killed brother
>he saw the siege of terra
>understanding chaos space marines motives he stops his blow and gets killed by CSM
>>
>>24377972
>>24377903
I think this feature was gonna be retconned so that only the highest ranking and most pious of the Mourning Sons could have access to someones 'soul'.

I don't think they'd be able to go into the detail you've put it though. I still think they'd be "Oh you're Chaos, BLAM". There would be no forgiveness, they wouldn't outright stop attacking.
>>
>>24378090
>"Oh you're Chaos, BLAM"
its as if they didnt just see his true nature of normal human escaping unforgiving regime
>>
>>24378239
But that's not the point, in the Imperium the end doesn't justify the means.

You've turned to Chaos = heresy.

There are no exceptions.

Anyway, can we get onto sorting this Chapter out? This is the third thread and we still seem to get people arguing over trivial matters.
>>
Reposting the fire eyes story from yesterday, might get some interest in here.

The Chapters hero of legend was Brother Jeremiah, the Master of Sanctity within the Chapter.

It was said that during his lifetime he was once given the esteemed honour of being admitted entrance into the Sanctum Imperialis, the chamber containing the almighty Golden Throne which housed the remains of the God-Emperor.

It was during this brief visit that he bore witness to the true nature of the Emperor, all of his divine plan and the miniscule workings of all of his plans. It was during this vision of complete and utter purity that the Silent Arbiter realised the unending war was not for naught and it would eventually culminate in the salvation of the Imperium and the human race. It was said that the Weeping Prophet shed tears as he was blessed with this divine revelation.

During a gruesome campaign against the forces of Chaos, when the fighting was at its most intense, when losses were many and victories were few, the Arbiter and a few trusted Marines made a desperate last push in order to break out of the situation they had found themselves in.

Calling on the divine might of the Emperor, but to little avail, Jeremiah watched as his fellow Battle-Brothers were cut down beside him by the forces of the Archenemy. Against overwhelming odds he fought onwards, taking injuries that would have outright killed lesser men, even fellow Marines. Scores of enemies fell under his righteous fury as he carved a bloody swathe of justice through the enemies. After receiving multiple fatal wounds he finally succumbed and fell to his knees.
>>
>>24378518
The forces of Chaos circled around the broken Arbiter, jeering and ridiculing the Marine. Jeremiah looked through hazy eyes and spat blood at the ground as he watched a lone figure emerge from the throng, clutching a knife oozing with foul enchantments and curses.

As Jeremiah focused on the cultist in front of him, he witnessed the true nature of the being in front of him, a tiny spark of white light, almost completely concealed by years of hatred, thousands of acts of heresy and corruption. Jeremiah’s eyes cleared from the haze that had overcome him, perceiving the events that may have come to pass. He saw the small light burst into a flame to rival a thousand suns, a truly dazzling beacon of hope against the unstoppable sea of darkness, and it was in this fiery pillar that complete salvation may have been achieved, the absolution of every man, woman and child in the Galaxy and the survival of humanity.

Alas, this divine gift, a literal boon from the Emperor had been squandered, merely to fulfil some petty weakness, frittered away to liars and criminals.

2/3
>>
>>24378531
It was at this revelation that Jeremiah began to weep, no longer tears of sorrow, nor tears of happiness, but tears of anger, grief, anguish and pain. The tears started as liquid, but as the visions he had seen struck him more deeply the tears turned to holy fire. Blue and white streaks poured from the Prophets eyes, the forces of Chaos recoiled in horror as the Silent Arbiter rose up from the ground, ignoring all previous injuries and grasped the cultist with both arms, as if embracing a lost son. Jeremiah grasped the cultists shoulders and looked deeply into the cultists eyes, who was unable to draw his vision away from the pious fury he had unleashed.

“Gaze into my eyes heretic, and see your mistakes.” The voice left the Prophets mouth as a mere whisper, but amplified tenfold around the surrounding Chaos hordes.

“Weep”. His final words purified the enemies in a sea of devout wrath. Cultists were instantly incinerated and demons were sent screaming back to the Warp.

As the battle subsided, the remaining Marines left their positions to find their beloved Master of Sanctity. As they waded through the corpses left behind they came across a single figure, kneeling in penitence, clutching a single skull. It was when they went to help him up they realised the Emperors blessing had unforeseen circumstances. Jeremiah’s eyes now glowed as a white hot flame, the fire that had rolled down his face earlier had scorched him beyond belief, scarring his cheeks and sealing his mouth shut. Brother Jeremiah was henceforth known as the Silent Arbiter, the Weeping Prophet.

>>24378548
Saves me a job, I know these threads never get off to a good start, but they tend to kick off soon.
>>
>>24377710
the first looks the best, the third looks pretty cool with all the robes though

have you decided which colours you're going for?
>>
>>24378869
Well bronze seems to be the main choice that everyone wants, it's quite hard to get a good looking colour on the armor painter.

There's of course, varying levels of robes that need to be added as well. Capes, tabards and robes can get a little cumbersome, even for a Space Marine
>>
Bumpin for interest.

I'm just one man, I'm not as smart or as imaginative as the entirety of /tg/
>>
Live damn you, live!

OP, you're stuck in limbo until you can get some solid info on this chapter, perhaps pulling rank and sticking with a colour scheme might be a good start.
>>
>>24379306
I'm going to cast my vote for the 3rd scheme. Cloth isn't all that cumbersome in the 40th millennium compared to power armor, and it has the distinction of looking genuinely different from anything else i've seen before, without being covered in bling.
>>
Only our highest ranking warriors can see into peoples souls. What they see is the purity of the person, and whether or not they used their potential according to what the Emperor would have desired for them. It's not prophecy, nor is it foresight, it's more like a terrible curse, because we see what might have been, and the Mourning sons are constantly getting the wonder and glory that COULD have been rubbed in their faces.

As a side benefit, they do get to see some of what the enemy's true nature, motives, and deeds are, because the certainty of the terrible things they did is needed to really show the contrast between reality and possibility.

When they recruit people, they look for the "what could be" and see who has the best potential for a grand future. Then the chapter tries to do everything it can to make that future happen.
>>
>>24380299
Yeah, OP, we really need you to provide some centralized authority and vision for this. I'm all for helping you out, but leaving it entirely to crowdsourcing leaves us vulnerable to useless tail-chasing.
>>
>>24377903
Well, from the previous thread discussions, the chapter has developed something of a Soul Drinkers feel, loyal to the Emperor, but not the Imperium as much. We've already gone on record as having killed an Inquisitor because he went heretic and stomped on another Inquisitor we actually like.

However, we still serve the Imperium, because it was founded by the emperor. We lament the injustices of it all, but we feel we have to remain working within the system and leading by example.

Why do the Mourning Sons weep? They cry because even being cursed to know how the heresy sprang from foolish and preventable injustice, they STILL have to cut it off at the head. Even though their reasons might bring empathy from the Mourning Sons, they still have to be killed as a threat.

But, when and where they can, the Sons tirelessly fight to make things better for the people, so that maybe there is one less wasted life they have to purge, and one more happy, productive, and loyal Imperial citizen.
>>
>>24380849
I concur, as someone put it yesterday it makes them look like prophets, which I'm all for.

>>24381229
If we're constantly fighting for the people, do we have good standing with the Salamanders?

>>24381121
We've got a definite name and we have our colour scheme. We basically need to get to grips with the Chapter's ability, all Marines can see with greater detail and pick up on body language much more easily, the higher ranks have had time to hone this, so they can read someone so easily, it's as if they can look into the future. This is pretty much the same >>24380964
>>
>>24381437
Sort of. We do still slaughter the fuck out of heretics and traitors, and we are quite far away from nocturne if we're based out of Segmentum Pacificus.

If we ever *did* encounter the Salamanders, I think we would develop a healthy liking for them, and maybe just a touch of fanboyism for the one chapter that kept to the Emperor's ideals for humanity ever since before the Heresy.

As far as their opinion of us, that's a little harder to say.
>>
>>24381437
>We basically need to get to grips with the Chapter's ability
Yes. Is it just the ability to read pokerfaces really well or do we see into their souls?

Did we go with the idea that only the psykers get the soul-inspection thing and others just get very sensitive eyes?

Sorry if this was cleared up in the other thread, I was asleep towards the end of that.
>>
>>24381751
It starts off as being able to read people's movements and reflexes to predict their actions in close combat.

If they survive long enough, their mutation develops further and then they get to read deeper and deeper as they get stronger. It's not psykers that get the ability, but the Chaplains, because only the most moral and mentally strong can peer into the mind and soul of another without losing their own minds in the process.
>>
>>24381751
The initiates learn to read peoples "tells" basically, whether it's to detect them lying or to estimate how they're going to attack by reading unconscious muscle movements that precede the attack.

Also, they would be very perceptive in general, noticing details from which they could draw conclusions. The chapter master might even be on the level of a Sherlock type dude, rapidly drawing accurate conclusions based on limited knowledge and small bits of evidence.
>>
>>24381751
>>24381879
I'm actually writing 2 pieces of writefagging, one's a tongue in cheek poker game between the Chaplains as part of their training, the other is the events of Brother Jeremiah and the whole crusade/fleet business, and that actually involved some Sherlock-esque deduction from the Chapter Master.

Are you me, anon?

Anyway, I've been shit for putting ideas in today and I'm gonna have to call it a night, hopefully this thread will pick up and get archived. I'll have a look tomorow, try and finish the writefagging and try and be a little more productive.

Good luck chaps :)
>>
He looked upon the golden throne that day and saw into the soul of the Emperor and in that soul he saw his sorrow. He weeps for his lost sons, he weeps for the billions of followers who have gave their lives for him, he weeps for the state of his Empire and the glory they once knew and what could have been, he weep yet he can show no tears, so we weep for him.
>>
bump for interest and assistance.

So can I suggest a possible idea forr the initiation rite? perhaps a Chaplain stares into the eyes of an aspirant and induces a vision in them and they them selves see if they are in fact worthy as well.
>>
>>24386247
That's sort of what they do already. Problem is, the initiates don't have the gene seed that would let them do any of that, and we can't impose our visions on others. That would be a little OP, and would negate any storytelling potential of other people not believing what we're saying is true.
>>

Pfftt ha ha! That's unintentionally hilarious. Chaos will shit itself laughing when the pussy marines charge em with watery eyes.

Ditch that detail, but maintain that crying eye motif in the heraldry and symbolism. Less is more.

Overall, not bad though.

Very nice. I like that.

And for the peanut gallery, remember that there's lots of 40k things that have tear/sorrow iconography. As we have repeated about a thousand times, they don't go into battle weeping like a baby, it's just the little trails left on your face by the water. Nothing huge.

If Chaos is stupid enough to double over laughing when the Mourning Sons approach it will be that much easier to remove the heads from their shoulders.

So how do they fight? What forms of deployment do they prefer? Drop Pods? Deepstriking Termies? With the ability to see their foes potential, do they like get close so they can know their enemy? Or do they rain death from afar so they don't have to go through the suffering of it?

Do they utilise transports, and if so, what sorts? Do they roll up in METAL BAWKSES or do they descend from the skies like righteous angels of judgement? Give their fighting style a real poetry.
>>
>>24395486
Close combat all day every day as often as possible, both to train the newbies in learning how to read their opponent's tells, and for the experienced guys to really get inside the enemy's head.

For deployment, we're a fleet based chapter, so I could see either drop pods or Thunderhawk/Stormtalon/Stormraven deployment. Probably both.

An idea I had would be that for the most part, because the chapter is rarely ever fighting from a fixed position as we roam around and crusade, is that we basically have very few actual armored land vehicles. Instead, we get aerial versions of everything if possible, to maximize the mobility and be able to close ranks with the enemy the quickest. Also, aerial support could provide the heavy cover using serfs as gunners as is standard, sparing all the battle brothers the need to fight at long range, which does not play to their strengths.

Dreadnoughts would probably be the exception. Their eyes are more than likely ruined, and in any case they're sealed into the sarcophagus, and it would be hard to use their skills. Hellfire Dreadnoughts and similar designs would be the order of the day, with battle brothers having served the chapter and seen more combat and more of the filth within humanity than any other "retiring" to a well deserved rest behind the front line a little bit where they can rest their ruined eyes and bodies.
>>
>>24395596
The scouts on the other hand would be almost exclusively used for stealth and recon operations. They would have to learn how to examine the enemy and relay all pertinent information without the use of the older warrior's perceptive abilities.

As the experienced warriors enter close combat, if long range support is needed, the scouts take on that task as best they can as well. By forcing them to fight from afar, seeking to predict the enemy's movements and actions through a telescope lens at a great distance, they would gain a greater appreciation for getting up close and personal.
>>
>>24395652
Naval support would be both more and less freely utilized by this chapter than most.

The Mourning Sons care deeply about the fate of civilians in the Imperium, and so destroying everything indiscriminately would be something to avoid at all costs.

However, when the chapter decides that there are none worth saving, usually after a battle or series of engagements, they don't pull any punches. Leveling an entire hive city would be no big deal.

Because the Mourning Sons' fleet is very large, it would have a lot of support vessels following it. Some of those could be construction ships or large supply/refugee storage vessels. In the same way that a farmer who burns the chaff tills the ash into new, good soil, the Mourning Sons burn, but also take some time to re-seed the cities they destroy with people that they deemed worthy of saving in previous campaigns, evacuating the good from a planet before destroying the bad, or simply taking along traveling people that the Chaplains deem morally worthy. Many of these would be drawn from the chapter's mass recruitment. Only the very highest caliber of recruits ever get initiated at all, but those who come close yet don't quite make it would still be excellent colonists.
>>
>>24395717
That's a cool idea.

Here's what i come for trying to hard to write:

Since the silence of Jeremiah the battle brothers had no one to ask about his deeds. So 9 chaplains that succeeded him made a small council to discuss about the visions and how they would do from here onwards.

Without finding a way to come with a solution they seek brother Jeremiah and in his eyes each of the chaplains sees an emotion in its highest form and from it each member has given guidance to his battle brothers.

The first saw suffering and guided his battle brothers that only through suffer they would be able repent themselves

The second saw anger and by that it he guided that the only way to purge his enemies is through the purest form of wrath

The third saw pity in the eyes of the the eyes of the Master of Sanctity and saw the only way to help those that had been affected by the war is through sympathy to those next to him.
>>
Now we need Grief Guilty disappointment happiness passion and the last one but not less important FEAR...
>>
>>24400159
So we'll have 9 Companies, headed by 9 different Chapter Masters, who all base their doctrine and fighting styles on the emotions they saw in Jeremiah's eyes?

We need to think of some grief-stricken names for them all.
>>
>>24400266

Theres only grimdark...
>>
I'm gonna be pretty hard in opposition to anything to do with organization in units of 9. That's Tzeentch's number, and the LAST thing any chapter that has unusual powers, PARTICULARLY anything having to do with perception or truth wants, is to be associated with Tzeentch.
>>
>>24399516
If our squads are in groups of 18, then only a full Thunderhawk would ever be able to transport a squad. Land Raiders dont hold that many, and neither do Stormravens.
>>
>>24400314
Agreed.

>>24400266
Also good, I think we'll have a 10th in reserve, and to make sure Tzeentch doesn't snap us up.
>>
>>24400385
We're a codex-deviant army in that we don't really use Devastators, we prefer to use aerial vehicles to their land-based counterparts, we may be a little overstrength. If possible, we should show at least *some* respect to the Codex, like making sure we have the right number of front line and reserve companies, at least.

The nail that stands too far out gets hammered down, and the Imperium has many big hammers.
>>
The fourth saw Grief in the eyes of the now mute brother and the sorrow they would suffer for all they would lose and all bonds that ought to be broken.

The fifth saw grief for all the moral acts they have to do to purge the heretics not being able to save then.

The sixth saw disappointment in the eyes of Jeremiah regret that for more they fight theres no way their expectations would be reached.

The seventh saw Happiness in the eyes of the battle and sainticity brother, and guided that they ought to be content in serving the emperor

The eighth saw passion in the eye of his master and that only through the love for their Emperor they would be fulfilled.
>>
For the ninth chaplain I will have to get some ideas from here he will have to be pretty badass too (not jeremiah badass just ruler badass)
>>
Reading the wikipedia on fear to have some since TGis slow on this chapter today

>>24400159
>>24400467
Dude these are good, I'm gonna steal them and just 'biblify' them a little more.

I'll post them in a sec.
>>
>>24400467
A: You used grief twice. B: You need to smooth out some of these sentences. C: This is very heavy on the melodrama, and that's not real fitting with this chapter's more serious fluff, D: We're not going with units of 9, that's Tzeentch's thing.

If you want, have a list of like 10 "mottos" or slogans attributed to the chaplains that were around after Jeremiah recieved his vision. These will essentially be our 10 Commandments, given unto the chapter.

Our Chaplains don't really share visions or anything, that's too much like a psyker power, and very OP.

What you've written might also make an ok poem or battle hymn though.
>>
>>24400537
>>24400549

Im not a writefag i was just trying here to someone come and do it better.

What they saw is his eyes and expression pretty much like mona lisa and that freaking smile no need to be a psyker.

I suggested 9 because we are the 999th chapter afterall

and the idea of this approach is mostly because of our battle tactics that don't follow a normal pattern.

And we must remember we were born from alpha there has to be a lot of suspicion things on us
>>
>>24400537
Yeah, these would be a lot better as a list of Chapter Commandments, given to us (verbally) by Jeremiah. After all, he is our prophet, of sorts, and he did receive a vision which he brought back to our chapter.

If you guys don't want to have the chapter have 10 commandments for 10 chaplains, go with either 5 for streamlining, or 20, to expand the list and make it more of a "saga" to be told in narrative form.
>>

The first saw suffering and led his Battle Brothers forth, as only through suffering could they truly find salvation.

The second saw anger and purged his enemies like no other, seeing it as the purest form of the Emperor's judgement.

The third saw pity in the eyes of the Silent Arbiter, and although a Marines hand can never be stayed, they still pity those who have fallen to the Ruinious Powers.

The fourth saw grief in the eyes of the now mute Brother and the sorrow they would inevitably suffer, for all they would lose and all the bonds that would be broken.

The fifth saw guilt for all they had failed, and would fail to do, in the service of the Emperor.

The sixth saw disappointment in the eyes of Jeremiah, both for the wasted potential of the enemies of Man and the failures of the Chapter to come.

The seventh saw happiness and content, for truly there is nothing greater than serving next to your fellow brothers in the holy service of the Emperor.

The eighth saw passion in the eyes the Prophet and that only through the fervor and zeal for the Emperor, would their duty be fulfilled.

The ninth, and last, saw fear. Fear for the consequences of failure and of the tasks ahead. To know this and overcome it, is every Battle Brothers duty.

>How's my writing?
>>
>>24400645
Shit, should we just go full Biblical Marines?
>>
>>24400625
We were born from Alpha, therefore changes in little things like doctrine and combat methodology is ok, but using chaos numerology is a whole different beast. Anything tied to Chaos is reaallllly dangerous for us in the public eye, more so than others.

I see where you drew the number 9 from, and that's not bad to use the pre-existing fluff. I like that you did that.
>>
>>24400652

Better than mine

The idea that jeremiah is mute and there should someone to pass his guidance forward.

He didn't have time to speak before he went im mute now...
>>
>>24400659
Well, I really don't want to write another ADJECTIVE_Marines. That kind of things pigeonholes creativity really quick.

We do have something of a Bibical feel, but I don't want to lock us down into *only* using that for inspiration.

Drawing some ideas from it is fine though, and regarding this partiular fluff idea we're working on i think its ok. The X commandments could become our chapter battle hymn, or our rite of purification, or etched on every left pauldron or something.
>>
>>24400652
Lol, also to answer your greentext question I didn't see, what you've written is definitely good enough for a solid first draft. Others, inluding OP if he ever shows up again, may edit it, but this stands pretty well on its own. I would ask that you add a 10th line, just because of 9 = Chaos. Perhaps either the First of the Tenth is Jeremiah himself, adding something special that the others missed with their lesser perceptivity.
>>
>>24400677

So forget all the nines just keep the 9 chaplains...

at least something to go with the 999th theme

But yeah we can go normal squad just different approach lots of jump squads and little to no devastator...

How about everyone have a battle knife if they don't have a better melle(chain power whatever)
>>
>>24400652
These commandments also can serve as a theme for each of the 10 Companies.

First Company, normally the purview of Terminators and high technology, instead voluntarily relinquishes their gear, taking only the most battered and damaged items so that their brothers may have better. They fight armed with faith alone, and rely not on material things.

The Second Company prefers to use the heaviest stuff. It is they who inherit the Terminator armor meant for First, and it is the Second that lead the charge, teleporting into combat, Assault Terminators all, letting their endless wrath cut a swathe from their enemies' flesh.
>>
>>24400760
There are only 9 high ranking chaplains, the first slot is meant for first company's chaplain, left forever empty in hopes that Jeremiah may return.
>>
>>24400738
Sounds good, I'll try and get a little more creative with them and see what I can come up with.

>>24400706
I think we should get them translated into Latin once we're done touching them up.
>>
>>24400738
>ething special that the others missed with their lesser perceptivity.

add one more and make jeremiah about fear?

so there would be the small 9 council + Jeremiah the Mute
>>
>>24400652
3rd Company are our diplomats. They remain aboard the fleet most of the time, coordinating both inter-chapter elements, the population aboard the large fleet, the people of the planets we visit to recruit from, and any Imperial emissaries we meet.

4th Company..... is kind of hard to write for. Probably they are the ones who undertake to hold the ground that has been burned and cleansed, laboring after the battle to rebuild what was destroyed.

5th Company is always at the leading edge of the fight, they ride aboard our advance vessels, seeking enemies to crush and allies to save, driven by the guilt they feel.

Please note, by the way, that the "commandments" do not define the ENTIRE character of each company, like they're Green Lanterns or something. I am specifically writing these to be an additional element that is stronger within a given company, not their ONLY defining characteristic.
>>
>>24400836

good anon

devastator scout is the recruiter?
>>
>>24400652

6th company are our teachers, our re-educators, our personal trainers. They remember Jeremiah's disappointment and are relentless among the chapter in trying to whip people into shape that they may not disappoint the Emperor again. they also are well known for having some of the best eyes in the chapter, for they are always seeking out flaws to eliminate in both friend and foe.

7th Company are the ones who work among the people on a personal level. 3rd company may be better negotiators, 4th company may be the ones who wear sackcloth as they rebuild a burned city, but it is 7th company that tends to take the time to comfort the weeping child, to console the parent who has lost their own, and to reunite families split by war.
>>
>>24400805
Jeremiah's big thing is that he saw the Emperor's love for humanity juxtaposed with how sad he is about how we've wasted both his gifts and our potential, in the context of this one cultist who could have been one of the greatest Imperial Saints, but frittered his life away for Chaos instead. Jeremiah's not really about fear, he's more about.... transcendence maybe.
>>
>>24400652
8th company is practically a company of Chaplains. Every one of them is a priest of the faith, for the Mourning Sons have seen that even though most Space Marines revere the Emperor as a father and not a god, Jeremiah showed them that the Emperor's love for them is indeed worthy of a god, and he shall be treated as such.

The 8th covers their armor in holy writ, carefully selected to present the Emperor's kind and loving side rather than his wrathful nature. Some have accused 8th of hypocrisy, especially when they destroy cultists with incredible fervor, but the men of the 8th know that the Emperor's love is only for the faithful, not for traitors.

The ninth represents fear, for though Imperial propaganda would tell you otherwise, even Astartes can be afraid. The coming dark looms large, but the truest test, when the chips are down, is whether or not the chapter will stand with the Emperor even when all hope seems lost and fear grips them by the throat and begins to strangle. These marines embrace the edge of fear, reminding themselves that they too may die, and that they must ensure that at all times their duty is done.

The 9th squad often operates the dangerous role of aerospace superiority piloting. The brothers inside their Thunderhawks may rest easy, knowing that the skilled pilots of the 9th will read the battle around them with a practiced eye, and brave fearful antiaircraft fire to get them all to ground. After all, for an Astartes, what could be more terrifying than to be shot from the air by an errant AA shell or laser, never having landed to do the Emperor's duty? The 9th refuses to let that fear come to fruition.

That's an interesting image. As I've said before, please don't think of these ideas as being the only thing that might define a given company. pigeonholing ourselves is never a good idea, these are just trands in a given company. There's certainly some antisocial men in 3rd, and gung-ho psychos in 9th.
>>
>>24401022

Lets make then scouts plus devastators because both fight from afar and by such means are "less" than the others brothers this being for novices only.
>>
>>24400882
I'm not sure what you mean by devastator scout is the recruiter.
>>
>>24401102
Earlier in the thread it was proposed that having to fight from afar and to train their eyes from afar (which is more difficult), would be part of the scout training. They don't have the armor to use big Devastator weapons though.
>>
>>24401110

I know but we have little scouts and devastators so little they all would fit in only one company...

Remember that we like to fight like to fight close, so that we can see ourselfs purging our enemy.

So anything that fights from afar is bad...
>>
>>24401132
Fighting from afar is seen as less important because it takes away from the strengths of the Mourning Sons. It's not "bad" per se, but i could see long ranged people filling several roles: Those who have been punished, those who have not learned to fight (scouts), and those who for whatever reason VOLUNTARILY take on the burden of guarding their other brethren and play the range game. A notable 4th category is of course the Dreadnoughts, who fight from the back because of their damaged bodies, blowing holes in enemy defenses with missiles and lascannons so that their more able-bodied brothers (with working eyes not sealed in a sarcophagus) can get in.

Actually, I like the idea of this chapter having scouts work alongside Dreadnoughts a lot during long range fighting. The scouts learn from the dreadnoughts, and keep smaller, less worthy enemies away from the chapter's heroes. Having a Dread nearby also improves the odds that the recruits who survive our extremely stringent recruitment process will go on to be Astartes, and they learn teamwork better this way.
>>
>>24401189

I really liked the idea of dreads following the scouts devastators...

makes sense in the idea of the chapter...

makes more sense than melle dreads without their eyes to help
>>
One thing to think about as well is the Mourning Son's weaknesses and enemies. We've covered a lot of what makes them strong, but thinking up appropriate shortcomings and powerful foes is what gives one of these chapters character and makes people care about their victories.

Of course, the Alpha Legion is probably our greatest enemy, both because of our nature and because we are trying to kill them and redeem our gene-seed in the eyes of the Emperor. It is a fight that may never be won, but our eyes are our ace in the hole, and it's like our burning brand with which we might actually cauterize a neck instead of sprouting two more heads.
>>
OP here, I am so proud of you /tg/.

I love the commandments, I love the whole Chapter setup, I'm starting to love everything that this Chapter is becoming.
>>
>>24401234
To a certain extent, our scouts ARE our Dreadnought's eyes. not literally, but symbolically at the very least. 2 scouts per dread, maybe?

>>
>>24401246

Lets do a SWOT analysis of our chapter

>>24401250

Yeah i only saw this later but tried hard to not let awesomeness die
>>
>>24401234
Dreadnoughts, scouts, and devastators, all of these make up the 10th company. 10th is a large company, being a reserve unit, a training unit, and a reinforcement unit, split up as needed in detachments to give extra options to the other 9 front-line companies.

Have 10th be like 500 or even 1000 warriors. Most of these will be scouts, and many of those will die because we are on crusade, and many more will be needed to replace losses, so I think having a large reserve pool is appropriate for a Crusading, Fleet based chapter. Of the companies that really see combat, there are about 900 marines, so we don't veer far from the Codex (or get crapped on by more inquisitors), yet we can replace losses well.
>>
>>24401246
I reckon we'd be more effective against Tzeentchian enemies than other forces of Chaos, seeing as we can use our body language reading skills to see past quite a lot of their bullshit.
>>
>>24401262

2 scout squads right?

damm chapter with over 50 dreads is bad
>>
>>24401315
If we can get close to them, yes. We might also be a little better at piercing their plots because of general mental perceptiveness, detective style, but Tzeentch is good at leaving false trails. Our men might get led on wild goose chases as often as not, if they can't get in and use their eyes.
>>
>>24401335
Being a Dreadnought is the ultimate sacrifice. You have literally made yourself into a tool for the Chapter, and you will live in suffering until you die. I could see the Mourning Sons venerating their Dreadnoughts as the ultimate martyrs for the cause, and there might be a lot more of them than normal. Maybe.

If there are, I would recommend that we lean towards using a lot of Stormravens, because they can carry a single Dread.

Standard doctrine: 10 Marines, 2 (or more scouts, they're small), and a Dread, per squad. 10 Marines are combat troops, Dread is long range fire support, and scouts assist Dread, provide support, and provide intel for the squad.
>>
>>24401315

Their first assignment as a Chapter was a relatively small one, as the Mourning Sons purpose had not been fully decided. They were to accompany the transfer of Master Inquisitor Nikolai to the Argus system, a star system that was currently under the control of Master Inquisitor Victus.

Victus had been raised on the Lacrymis planet as a child and, like all members of the Inquisition, had slowly worked his way up the ranks and now stood as the overseer of all Inquisitorial activities within the system. His knowledge of the planet, and its innermost workings, had helped the ruling governors maintain a general level of peace over the entire planet. This influence had then spread to the neighbouring planets in the system, his unique blend of Inquisitorial justice and understanding of the populace had ensured that the system had flourished.

Crime and various cults were not unheard of on the planet, they did happen from time to time, but they were always put down before they got out of hand. The Inquisition had a great deal of presence within the system, so any cults that did form tended to stay well hidden and tried not to attract too much attention for fear of retribution.

1/2
>>
>>24401493
It was no secret that Inquisitor Nikolai coveted Victus’ job, many years before he had been Victus’ second-in-command, unfortunately due to a scandal in office, Nikolai had been demoted and sent to another sector to assist the Inquisition where they needed it. However, since that time Nikolai had used his cunning to ascend to the rank of Master Inquisitor, his relative youth working as a positive boon, with many members of the Inquisition realising that they needed some young blood to ensure the system kept running smoothly. Now he had returned with documents and letters from Grandmaster Inquisitor Ulbricht, giving Nikolai control over the system and moving Victus to another, less well-known location.

Chapter Master Fovus strode through the corridors of the Grand Palace, the seat of power on Lacrymis and where the governors would often be found. The Marines that followed him were all giants compared to the average citizen, anyone catching their gaze either bowed reverently or simple unable to move, awed by the sheer presence that the Marines exuded. Master Inquisitor Nikolai, quite an imposing man by himself, nevertheless paled in comparison to the Marines either side of him, Fovus the Chapter Master of the Mourning Sons, and Brother Jeremiah, the Master of Sanctity.

>First part of the Jeremiah incident and events leading up to the Crusade. I've written a bit more, I just need to finetune it before the big reveal. Let me know what you guys think so far.
>>
>>24401503
Using too many eye-related terms is a bit on the nose, especially since the Chapter hadn't really developed its unique traits by this point. Lots of custom chapters do that kind of thing, where every name adheres too much to the theme, and they "just happen" to be from a homeworld with a meaningful name. Try to stay away from that.

Other than that, this is good so far.
>>
>>24401465

We still don't have a clean weakness to go for ours many strengths.
That way, with only the tear we may start to become crying salamanders.

We have a opportunity in ou enemy tzeentch because he seen to have more ways to explore with our chapter.

Threats now is hard to see because we are not really established yet.

And if i had more time i would try to make a true chart...

maybe even develop a "marine canvas"

might do it from home today...
>>
>>24401503

Stay away from too many eye reference it ought to turn us one trick dog
>>
>>24401566
Well, I would imagine we get into a lot of fights we don't necessarily need to be in, either chasing down the tendrils and interwoven plans of Chaos, or because we can't sit idly by when there's injustice nearby. Spoiler Alert: there's a lot of injustice in 40k!

This chapter seems like one that might be led by the nose by enemies who successfully trick them into crusading a certain direction. We might see through the lies when we finally get to the killing ground, but by then it's too late.

The Chaplains would have to be as vigilant for the overzealousness of our people as they would be against corruption.
>>
>>24401621
Overconfidence, drawing from our large fleet, large chapter, and theoretically genuinely divine mandate, could get us into trouble. The older and wiser Mourning Sons will have learned to temper themselves, but the younger members are probably very aggressive and volatile.

Something similar to the Space Wolves in their relationship between Greybeards and Blood Claws, except it derives from religious, humanistic, and crusading fervor rather than gene-seed.
>>
>>24401677

Now thats a good weakness
>>
>>24401566
Marine Canvas? Do tell, that sounds interesting.
>>
Mourning Sons.
Still not decided who we are descended from.
999th Chapter.
Fleet-based.
Faulty Occulobe – leads to greater perception, new Marines can read body language much more clearly which leads to greater combat abilities. More experienced Marines are able to put this in conjunction with battle experience to figure out tactics, and the most mentally able (usually the Chaplains) are able to peer into the mind and soul of others without losing theirs in the process.
9 Companies – based on insight gained from Brother Jeremiah (hope, fear, passion, etc)
10th Company is a massive support unit comprising of Dreadnoughts, Scouts and the like
We do not get on well with the Inquisition.
We are on good terms with the Mechanicus, as we need to be to keep the fleet going.
We get on very well with the Salamanders when we encounter them, we try to keep the average citizen just as safe as they do. We will always try to save those who are worth saving, as they may be potential recruits.
Due to the Chaplains abilities, recruits are drawn from anywhere, so long as they have the necessary moral integrity that the Space Marines require.
Each Dreadnought in the Chapter, due to the Marine’s eyes being useless inside the sarcophagus, are always accompanied by 2 scouts to act as their eyes.
Constantly on the lookout for our Alpha Legion nemesis.
Particularly effective against Tzeentchian forces, due to our abilities to read body language and predict tactics.

How's this so far?

>>
>>24401710

Lets go full alpha we voted for this...

Even Though i voted for iron hands, alpha feel better now
>>
>>24401710
We don't get on well with MOST of the Inquisition. Radical Inquisitors would probably like us a lot, because they go up against other Inquisitors all the time as well, and seek to shake up the existing structure similarly to how we want to rebuild things. Fundamentalists would reeeeeeaaallly hate us though, and we would have to work hard not to run afoul of them.

We're super effective versus Tzeentch at close range. At long range or on a campaign scale "hunting for clues" level, it's more in Tzeentch's favor because he can lead us astray, unless one of our experienced warriors is doing the searching.

And yeah, we need to nail down once and for all who we are descended from.

For Loyalists, I favor either Dark Angels (secrets and detective work, and we'd be GREAT at chasing the Fallen), Salamanders (Distant brethren altered by time and distance, carrying their ideals to the other end of the Galaxy), or even Ultramarines (Estranged children seeking to uphold the ACTUAL ideals of the old-school Everyman Marines. We fight for the people and use our brains, not dry-humping the Codex. As mutants and Codex-Deviants, we also wanted to be as far away from our "parents" as possible, remaining entirely mobile on a fleet on the other end of the Galaxy in the Segmentum Pacificus)

If we go Traitor Legion using stored gene-seed, the Alphas are the primary choice, followed by probably Word Bearers, seeking to redeem their brother's names by endlessly crusading for the Emperor's true ideals, not the perverted shit of Lorgar.
>>
>>24401875
There was a backlash against Dark Angels last thread, so they don't seem to be the favourite.

I think we'd stick with being descended from a now-traitor legion, as you said trying to redeem them in the eyes of the Emprah.

As for Alpha Legion or Word Bearers, I have no say in the matter. I can't think of any reason to go for one over the other, we may have to take a vote.
>>
>>24401677
Good call. Initiates are Zealots, rather than basic name?
>>
>>24401875

They already have minotaurs...

Ultramarines are pretty nosy with their followers.
Salamanders already have a mutation

World bearers are small geneseed wise...
>>
>>24401937
Well, it looks like Alpha Legion is the clear favorite. I have no objections to them either, I was just proposing different options.
>>
>>24401946
That's a little too Black Templar.

We could call them the Blind, for they do not yet see. Is that too over the top?

3rd are the diplomats manage the fleet. First to get involved in fights because they are already there.

6 7 8 normal squads

9 thunderhawks

10 scouts devastators and dreads
>>

The Beholders
The Observers
The Witnessers
Basilisks

>>
>>24402150
See, all of those things are creatures/concepts that revolve around *having* sight.

I like them as ideas for nicknames for each company, maybe, like 1st Company "The Witnesses", or something.
>>
>>24402046
Visionless?

As a side note, I could see vision quests being something this chapter might do fairly often. Peering into the stars and trying to read their meanings, staring into flames and trying to discern the Emperor's will. Even if they fail (and most of the time they will get no result), becoming able to distinguish even the faintest stars or thinnest wisps of flame is valuable training.
>>
>>24402150
Also, we settled on image 3 at the top of the thread for our scheme, right? Going with the robes=prophets thing?
>>

>>
>>24402542
So, how close do you all think we are to putting this forth as a 1d4chan page? I feel like the one thing we really lack is images and artwork for the chapter, particularly symbols and such.

We need a pauldron with our chapter icon, at least. Probably also a list of the fleet based assets. We have an image of the generic marine, if we could get the specialists made that would be awesome but not strictly necessary.

Images of the different companies, their iconography, pauldrons, etc would be really useful.

Yeah, the face mask was deemed to be a good whole-chapter symbol, with the caveat that it is taken from a set of Magic cards, and may need to be edited in some fashion to avoid shenanigans.

The red and white with black stripes one you mentioned was envisioned as the 2nd Company symbol, but the red diamond would actually be 3rd company according to the Codex. The other two may not work as well now that purple is no longer our base color. Also, if we're using the diamond-eye-tear streaks as our Company Symbol, varying only the color as per Codex Astartes policy. This may be a good idea overall, to strengthen our "adherence" in the public eye.

In that case, the tear stripes and eyes would remain black, and the diamond would change colors.

1st Company: White or Silver (members of the 1st Company should also paint their helmet the company colour).
2nd Company: Yellow or Gold
3rd Company: Red
4th Company: Green
5th Company: Black
6th Company: Orange
7th Company: Purple
8th Company: Grey
9th Company: Blue
10th Company: Nominally white, however the company colour is not displayed on their armour, because of their need to blend with their surroundings on reconnaissance missions.

We might consider 10th Company to be Silver instead.

For 5th company, we might have to find a different color for the diamond, because it would be black eyes and tear streaks on a black diamond, and that might look odd. Perhaps outlining it in silver or white would be enough? (Maybe we outline all of them? Artfags, your assistance would be appreciated here, I have no skills in art, only writing).

I know we've been saying that their main enemy would be tzeentch, but I cannot help but wonder what the librarians/chaplains would react if they looked into the eyes of a Thousand Son

Well, TS are tzeentch's boys. It would likely be very painful for both parties. Physically painful for the Mourning Sons as they view the sheer scale of the Thousand Sons' plots, mentally painful for the TS as their secrets get ripped from their minds. As beings whose sustenance is in part secrecy, revealing those secrets would be very dangerous.

I'm amazed that this ridiculous Chapter fluff has spawned multiple threads. Honestly, is it more than just a few try-hards or do people really dig the Bawww Angels? Even the color scheme is shit. You can try to head off criticism with your "not emo or Crybaby" line OP, but all that does is call attention to it.

>boo hoo hoo, Chaos killed another one
>999th, our number is soooo shuper kewl!
>we're not like other Loyalists.. our gene seed is DARK AND EDGY ALPHA LEGION!!!
>yeah, and we can see into souls and shit

Honestly, you're getting into Draigo tier with this stuff. OP, are you Matt Ward? I bet you're a Wardfan at least.

I ment more in regards to their fall to chaos

Oh, the Mourning Sons would hate the FUCK out of the Thousand Sons. They're like everything we stand against, much like the Alpha Legion.

Gonna bring up the Vördr suggestion from the previus thread as the honour guard
>>
>>24406444
Actually, given the new fluff we have, I nominate that the Vordr be the Dreadnoughts. They're the ones who guard the chapter from afar, and nurture the younger warriors in combat. An honorable name for the honored warriors that can no longer fight alongside their still-healthy brethren.

That would definitely make more sense considering dreads can live for far longer and guide more of the reens into the ways of the chapter.

Bump.

What do you use to make these?

Bolter and Chainsword's space marine painter. There's several versions. Newer is easier to use, older has the extra wargear and robes, and there's an older one that does Terminators also.

Ah, alright. Good to know.

No problem.
