Here! I'm late but here! I sat down about five hours ago to play Heart of the Swarm, and I just beat it, and looked at the time. Sorry guys. Ahem, your Doctor welcomes you, ladies and gents, to Demi Quest! Previous threads can be found here: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Alex%20Hanger

Last thread we took a supposedly easy mission, and ended up ambushed by a powerful enemy. We were handily defeated and forced to retreat, and our comrades set out to try their hand. They returned a man down, Pitcher having been run through and now missing an arm. Our partner, Melon, volunteered us for the dangerous mission to hunt down the beast.

Hunting the Huntress
A-Rank
100 Imperial base, 1,000 Imperial bounty, Battle Data for Engineer usage.
Target, hereby known as Huntress, has been recorded with scanner jamming abilities, along with several different weapon abilities including a wide-area explosive, a dual splitting arrow, a powerful arrow, and a shotgun arrow. Huntress has been recorded to be skilled with ambush abilities, a high accuracy rating, and the ability to disappear when not directly looked at.
Extreme caution is advised, as a two man team is all that can be sparred. The remaining Demi will be on base, serving as a defense force.
Accepted by Hunter-Killer team Imperator and Cheshire.

You have three hours before your Demi, Imperator, is ready to go out on the mission. What do you wish to do? I also advise, again, to try and do some planning.

A fine day in this man's Empire!

I am still in favor of requesting an infantry detachment to move out under the pretense of restoring the outpost, acting as bait. Cheshire and Imperator will follow at distance, and strike when the Huntress pounces.

As for what to do beforehand, we need to talk to Melon, make sure she is in the right state of mind.
>>
>>24403681
Given the low number of men at the base, they probably won't be willing to spare many, especially after losing the entire detachment at the lake already.

Still, we could at least ask what resources they can spare for our mission.
>>
>>24403758

There do not need to be many, our foe does not strike me as a picky hunter.
>>
>>24403799
Our foe also completely blindsided us last time. I fear that she'll either wipe out the infantry at a distance before we know she's there, or ignore them entirely and ambush us from behind.
>>
>>24403858

I agree it is risky, but its the only plan I've seen brought forward, besides the same bait but with the abandoned structures as a hardpoint.

At the end of the day, we have almost no intelligence. I am going off of a hunch, but a flimsy plan is far better than none at all.
>>
>>24403902
I suppose it's all we've really got. This thing has far superior stealth to us, and we have no idea where it will be aside from "in the general area".

All we know is that it's quick, dangerous and would like to kill us all. Which doesn't give us much to plan off of.

No splitting up whatever we do though, I've watched Predator, I know how that ends.
>>
>>24403954

Last time we split, Melon ended up minus a cockpit, so I shan't argue. We stick together, and those poor souls on the ground stay far afield of us.
>>
>>24403982
We should ask if they have a more advanced temporary sensor system to spare. Some way of locating this thing before it puts an arrow through one of us would be a real advantage on this mission.
>>
>>24404018

I somehow doubt it, but cannot hurt to ask.
>>
>>24404032
Since this is most likely a suicide mission which could decide the fate of the base, they might be willing to assign some additional mission gear at least.

No harm in asking.
>>
Ok, so I'm getting this general plan: Get a military detachment to go to the lake outpost to try and retake it. You will follow behind stealthily and attack the Huntress when she (hopefully) goes for the bait (the detachment).

Is this right? Any refinements on that?
>>
>>24404082
Check with the base commander (Retter? I forget) on whether we can requisition any additional Demi equipment for the mission. Some sort of more advanced scanner would be first choice.
>>
>>24404082

Let's ask about that advanced sensor. Other than, uhh, I think it's time to write the letter they send out if we don't make it. My mecha experience tells me that's a thing we should do.
>>
>>24404118
We could do, although I'd imagine if we don't make it, the postal service will be down for a while, what with the stealth Abomination murdering everyone trying to enter or leave the base.
>>
>>24404175

The final letter is my favorite mecha trope, even if it's never sent, its the sentiment that matters.
>>
>>24404207
If we have time before we go, having sorted out equipment, infantry support, our letter and such. We should probably go visit Pitcher.
>>
>>24404111
>>24404118
You sit down and discuss your plan with Retter. "Hm... I will agree to this plan only because we need to retake the lake either way. This gives us a greater chance of completing both missions. Go tell the sergeant to chose fifty infantrymen. Thirty spearmen, twenty musketmen." He orders his Engineer, who takes off.

"Sir, I was also wondering if there might be any extra equipment you could offer to make this mission easy. A more advanced scanner, maybe?" You speak up, and he rubs his chin. "The most advanced scanner on base is in my Demi, and it was shut down same as Pitcher's and Volunteer's. We have a couple of different items that could assist, uh..." He goes through his desk.

"We have a Hornet Micro-Missile System and a Tortoise Active Defense System." He says, rooting through notes. "We can only give your team one. The Hornet System fires small swarms of seeker micro-missiles, but only has two shots. The Tortoise System is an Engineer controlled set of extra arms that have shields attached to them. We can temporarily equip them to your Demi for this mission, but you will have to return them once you return."

HORNET is a two shot weapon that gives you +3 Ranged.
TORTOISE is a defense system that gives you +1 die when defending.
>>
>>24404351
I'm sorry, I should have said, you may only pick one, unless you can pass a Soul roll to try and convince him to risk valuable equipment that will come in handy if you fail.
>>
>>24404351

I suggest the Hornet. The best possible outcome is us ending the thread in only a few volleys. I doubt we will last to fire more than twice no matter what we do.
>>
>>24404351
Hornet. If this turns into a long pitched battle, we're going to lose.
>>
>>24404351
The hornet.

Also if we have time, see how the damage was done to our Demi and where her attacks were focused.

If we encounter more of these we could use this to upgrade our armour to specifically counter their attacks and we could maybe get a bonus in dodging them.
>>
>>24404351

Add the Hornet and pray we can bury the Huntress under a fuckhuge attack roll.
>>
>>24404521

This is a good idea, but I have a hunch our foes are too diverse for that. We shall see, its just a gut feeling.
>>
>>24404404
>>24404409
>>24404521
>>24404536
"I'll take the Hornet. If it gets into a prolonged fight where Tortoise would really shine, we're screwed anyway." You say, and he nods and hands you a request form. "Drop that by with your Engineer as soon as you can. The infantry will meet you at the gates in three hours." He orders, and dismisses you.

You and Melon head to the hangar, quietly talking. Melon is pissed, REALLY pissed, and wants revenge. But she remembers your earlier words, and is trying to keep her head in the game. You enter the hangar to a strange sight. 098 is facing off with a ruby eyed Engineer girl, wielding that huge tool with the glowing hot knife blade on the end. The girl is swinging a tool that has an enormous spinning saw blade on it. They both look downright pissed off, and you think, under the whirring and buzzing of their tools/weapons, you can hear them growling at eachother.

Would you care to step in? And how?
>>
>>24404670

Authoritatively. This is unacceptable.

" Engineers! Stop this madness in the name of the Empire!"
>>
>>24404670

"...Is this an Engineer mating ritual?"
>>
>>24404670
Step in. We can't have people losing their heads before a mission. Make sure to not play favorites.
>>
>>24404670
Oh boy, someone tried to touch another Engineer's Demi.

Put on our most commanding voice.
"What is the meaning of this?"
>>
>>24404717
I'm pretty sure this is an Engineer "you touched my Demi, motherfucker!" ritual.
>>
>>24404693
seconding this. We are about to go into battle, we can't have out engineers go injure each other.
>>
>>24404693
"Engineers! Stop this madness in the name of the Empire! What is the meaning of this?!" You yell, and they hiss at eachother as they back away. "Bitch went behind my back and tried to mess with Imperator!" 098 signs, waving the red hot blade at her. She hisses at him and revs the blade. "Stupid new kid, you don't know what the hell you're even doing! Let someone with some skill do the damn job!" This sets them back to circling eachother with teeth bared.

>>
>>24404832
You yell at them again and they slowly head away from eachother, red eyes glaring daggers at 098's back as he takes the paper from you and reads it. He instantly cheers up and signs a quick apology before taking off to grab a two-wheeler and heading off to a large locked door on the far end of the hangar.

"...so that was mildly scary." Melon notes, eyeing the tool 098 has slung over his shoulder now. "Idiocy, using tools meant for Demi like that, and right before a mission." You say, huffing. 098 returns with two large copper boxes with holes in one end. He ducks behind the curtain and gets to work.

What do you do?
>>
>>24404861
Well, I do hope we do manage that command. Engineer mutiny now would be the worst timing ever.
>>

This, ask her who she is and why she was attempting to interfere with our demi without permission, that shit ain't acceptable.

Then excuse ourself to go write a letter, in case we don't make it.
>>
>>24405038
I think this is more of a "to be sent in the event of my horrible death on today's mission" kind of letter.
>>
>>24405058

If you've read Muv Luv Alternative, you know the type of letter of which I speak. It is indeed that type of letter.
>>
>>24405073
I never got around to playing that. It always looked so damned depressing.
>>

It's not a happy tale, for certain. I don't regret reading it, though.
>>
>>24405132
It is. Doubly so if you play it in order.
>>
>>24404993
>>24405013
You go hunt down that other Engineer. "Who are you?" You start. "And why were you trying to mess with my Demi?" She huffs. "051, base support, in the event of a Engineer death I am to assist in all preparations and am to replace the dead Engineer until such a time as a new one can be assigned." She explains. "Since I can't well work on the Demi I am assigned to just yet, I decided to assist yours." She explains. You dismiss her and excuse yourself to go write a few letters while thinking of the implications of that.

Who do you write letters to?
>>
>>24405192
I see. Well, we're going to have to have a talk with 098 about being slightly less overprotective, although it sounds like she was being rather argumentative in how she offered her help.
>>
>>24405192

Parents, old friends, Vortez and Twist, and some for our compatriots on base. Short things, apologies for failing to live up to expectations, expressing hope that our death has served a purpose, and so on. These are only to be sent if we fall, after all. We burn them if we return.
>>
>>24405192
To the folks. They deserved to know about this. Afterwards to friends and comrades. Hopefully we never have to send these letters.
>>
>>24405240
This.

>>24405217
However else we approach that situation, we need to make 098 understand that pulling a weapon on another Imperial Engineer is not acceptable, at all, ever.
>>
>>24405285
Let's not be too hasty. He was only looking out for Imperator. What if someone does try to sabotage him down the line?
>>
>>24405314
If he catches someone trying to sabotage, that's fine. He can do what he has to to take them down.

Pulling a lethal weapon on a fellow imperial engineer for coming near his demi could well get him executed if he does it at the wrong time in front of the wrong people.
>>
>>24405314

He should know to come to Alex, not get into a powertool fight with another Engineer.
>>
What's the plan once this chick starts dropping soldiers? How are we going to find her shooting location?
>>
>>24405486

Trace the source of the projectile. Hopefully.
>>
>>24405486
It's a giant red arrow. It LITERALLY cannot get more obvious of a projectile, unless she was shooting it to herself.

You write up letters to your parents, old friends from the academy, Twist, Vortez, Melon, and the other pilots on the base. By the time you are done it is nearly time to head out, and you set the letters with your other stuff, along with an instruction note. You are pulling on your uniform jacket when Melon comes in to collect you, and you head to the hangar.

"Since my brother is in this area too, I was able to call him up on the radio. It was nice talking to him." She explains. "Here's hoping I get to do it again." She says, and you smirk as you split up and climb in your separate Demi. You step down from the rack, feeling as good as ever, but with the edition of two large missile launching boxes, one on each side, under your arms. You flex and stretch, slamming your fists together and rolling your neck.

You and Cheshire meet up with the infantrymen, and set out. Any last minute planning or decisions?
>>
>>24405641
just make sure she understands the mission, and doesn't bullrush the enemy the moment her position is revealed. Play smart. Also, emplore her to praise the Empire for luck.
>>
>>24405641
Tell the infantrymen to not take any chances they don't need to. Their job is to distract the enemy, not confront them.
>>
>>24405641

Tell Melon it is vital we do not reveal ourselves until we have a clear shot. We need to destroy this target in as short a time as possible. A prolonged engagement will be our death.
>>
>>24405641
While the soldiers might want to take revenge for the soldiers at the water, this is not the time nor place for heroics, we need them focused and looking out for the enemy as our own sensors will most likely fail.

You hand out orders to the infantry and then remind Melon to keep her head in the game. "I know. We're a sniper team, we wait, we watch, and only act when we have the perfect shot. I got it." She says, trying to be calm. You let the infantry get ahead as you slip into the forest. A scout returns and explains distressing news. "The outpost is being manned by locals, they must have moved in as soon as they got the chance." He says. "Looks to be about thirty of them, with bows and spears. Huntress was not spotted, but that's not a surprise."

Changes to the plan?
>>
>>24405858

It has to be convincing. Inform the infantry that they are to take the position, it will surely draw out the Huntress. Melon and Alex should find the best ground possible to cover them, while remaining undetected.
>>
>>24405858
Keep following the plan, but have Melon following them at a reasonable distance. Close enough to defend them if attacked, but far away enough to stay unnoticed.
>>
>>24405906
Make sure they know we can't help, they need to act as they would if we were not here. He does the Empire proud, hopefully none of his men will have to die just to bring the huntress out of hiding
>>
>>24405958

No.

If she is detected the game is up, and we cannot split against this foe. The infantry are on their own, they will do their duty to the Empire.
>>

You order them to keep to the plan, and they move in while you and Melon hold back to watch and wait. The locals are men, dark brown skin, most of them with shaved heads. The fighting starts immediately, and is intense, the Legionnares are better equipped, have greater numbers, and you would swear they are more skilled, but the locals are entrenched.

I'm not sure I'd trust any information from an enemy combatant, but what the hell, we could at least ask...

"What is the exact location of your summoners."
>>
>>24407380
"Do you know why.....kids love Cinnamon Toast Crunch?"
>>
>>24407547

There is no way she knows that, its an Imperial secret.

"Who sent you? What is the exact location of your summoners?" You ask. She laughs.

"Sent me? No one. I go where I want. Do what I want. I don't need summoners and circles. I am here because it pleases me to play with other people's puppets." She hums.

"Why do you fight? I would hear your reasons before we burn your filthy corpse." You growl out.

"I fight because I know. Because I have seen. Because I can, and because I am strong. My bow has felled Demi, Abominations, Leviathans, Titans, even Demigods. I fight because the hunt is good. Because it makes me live. And if I help an old friend in the process?" She purrs and giggles. "All the more joy."

Anything more?

Rolled 36

Wait wait wait, pistol cocking? Wasn't this just a weird, talking Abomination?

"WHAT are you?"
>>
>>24407618

" And now, I have felled you."

Fire the damn missiles. Leave nothing.
>>
>>24407618
Ask her the identity of this "old friend".
>>
>>24407618
"How would you like a job?"

Can't be wasting resources.
>>
>>24407704
Nooope. She seriously injured a comrade, and has most likely killed many more Imperial citizens.

The bitch burns.
>>
>>24407704

No way in hell man, thats so far out of character I cant even see it with Imperator's sensors.
>>
>>24407739
The Imperator's sensors are weak, the winds of change are blowing.
>>
When we've asked these questions, we should destroy it and wrap this up. The infantry may well still be fighting at the lake, and we should go offer support.
>>
>>24407766
All that will happen if we ask it, and it accepts (which is highly unlikely, as it seems far too proud to do so anyway) is that it will be executed on sight when we return to base.

I'm not sticking my neck out for some monster that tried to kill us all.
>>
>>24407766

I fail to see how, because some corrupted rebel said some vague shit about "The Truth"?

Alex was born and raised by propagandists and has wanted to serve the Empire his entire life. His duty is to end this bitch, and that's what we're going to have him do.
>>
>>24407766
We're granting it a quick death, which is more than it deserves. It should be thankful that Alex Hanger is an honourable man.

"What are you?" You ask.

"I am the hunter, the predator. I stalk and kill, and I leave nothing behind."

"Who is your old friend?"

"Oh, you will meet him soon."

"Hm. You have felled many. And now, I have felled you." You light up the Hornet and they rip towards her.

"Ah-ah. It is not for the prey to decide how the predator dies." She purrs. Before the missiles reach her she goes up like a miniature sun, and when everything is said and done, there is a crater left behind with nothing in it. Melon curses quietly.

What do?
>>
>>24407817
So support the infantry forces at the base, if they're still fighting. Melon is primarily an anti-infantry unit, so her assistance would be invaluable.
>>
>>24407817

Return to base, I have a feeling her words held meaning regarding her "friend".
>>
>>24407835
This, once the lake is secure, we can return to base.
>>
>>24407817
Send Melon to support the people at the lake and keep a lookout for any other enemies.
>>
>>24407817
>"Ah-ah. It is not for the prey to decide how the predator dies."

Pretty sure if she dies, that makes her the prey.

Oh well, she's too dead to argue with. Time to go assist our infantry forces.

You take up an overwatch while Melon moves in to support the infantry. It's an easy victory with her aid, and the outpost is quickly under your control.

You quietly sit and contemplate what sort of 'friend' might be coming. Damned freak, speaking of the truth and visions and such. Your truth proved stronger, in the end, and now her truth is dead.

And that is where we are going to end for the night. Because I kind of have nothing more at the moment, I will try to have something more solid on Wednesday. If someone could archive this, I would appreciate it!
