So, a Borderlands based PnP, could we do it?

We already know from previous attempts, the guns system would be a fuckhuge effort, but what about the rest that goes into a system?

Classes, skills, perks, combat in general.
How well would a Borderlands PnP actually work?

Get rid of procedurally-generated everything. It doesn't work with dice. Replace the guns with ones that have model names and numbers and everything. It doesn't keep you from having a metric fuckton of guns, but it keeps you from having to roll a goddam die for every weapon in the game. That's something computers can do, but we can't.

You could cut out a lot of the gun generation by blanketing any gun that has white quality as "junk" and allowing it to be sold to a vendor as soon as it is picked up (or otherwise have it not take up inventory space). Gun generation can also be simplified by taking out minute variable effects and making them constant instead - so, instead of a gun getting 10-20% increased damage, it just gets 15%. Creating some gun templates would help to, so perhaps if a GM wanted to pregen some loot, he could take a gun template and check boxes next to the effects he wants to put on.

As for other things, I'm somewhat undecided whether it makes sense to use the game's classes as a base or just take the niftier parts and abandon them. Roland and Axton would obviously be rolled into one class, Brick and Salvadore most likely as well, but Lilith and Maya might be different enough to warrant different skills. There is also the problem that there are only 13 sirens in the universe, so either that limit would need to be lifted or players would not be able to play as sirens. I think the former probably makes more sense, since sirens add some magic to the game.

Probably something to be decided early on is how closely you want to follow the game - for example, you could have the skill tree from the games, or you could have a more free-form character generation.

As for combat in general I think a grid would be best and have both players and enemies maneuver on the grid. It would also help represent cover and such.

So you make a sort of "Daughters of ____" class that sort of vaguely implies a "demi-god" status so people can play a balanced, proliferate version of this cool character? They'd have to be the literal daughters of sirens, or maybe just the next generation of Sirens, with more of them but less power individually.

Have a table of guns up, make them easily modifiable so GM can make changes to the gun such as strength boosts of nerfs of whatever.

The weapons already seem to do this, be established models with the guns being varying alterations.

Such as Torgue guns usually fall under model names like Rod, Root, Pounder, Spitter, Hulk, Smasher ect.
Each one of those could be a model type, then have preset variations from that model line along with a guide and the information to make your own variant of the chosen model

So we're left with the receiver, the optics, the furniture, the accessory, the barrel, and the mag. In BL1, since I never looked into the mechanics of BL2 gungen, the accessory included elemental mods, I believe, so that leaves us with 6dX, with X being the number of options for that component. With three per manufacturer, one reserved for empty/stock, and one for "re-roll for unique part", that gives us 6d20 for every single gun in the game. Then you get to consult the chart and add the modifiers together to make sure it's not better than the one you already have, and then find the price modifiers to see how much you get for it at the vending machine. Trying to emulate the video game mechanics in a tabletop is a fool's errand.

Barrels can have various forms of rifling and length, stocks can be extendable, customized, various cheek welds, etc.

Triggers can also be varied, different pull lengths, customization options for modifiers.

The grip can either be merged with the stock, or be a pistol grip.

barrel length. Longer = bonuses towards accuracy, more stability, and more power, however the longer the barrel, the heavier, harder to conceal, harder to put on target and harder to use at close ranges it is.

stock- meaty substantial stocks absorb recoil, making repeated shots have less of an affect on accuracy. However they make the gun bulker and thus harder to use in point blank situations. Stocks usually come in solid, adjustable, folding, or totally removed. Removing a stock saves weight and lets the weapon be maneuvered in tight confines. But blows for the purposes of long range shooting.

grips are mainly a mater of preference. But forward vertical grips are mainly used for short to medium range shooting. bipods are meant for long. not having either saves weight which lets the weapon be put on target faster.

receiver obviously determines caliber and recycling action. that's a whole can of worms unto itself.

Big = bruisers, Berseker
huge = Goliaths

The differences between a bandit and a commando would be in skill/perks selection.

I'm thinking of classes based off of player character classes with archetypes available like in pathfinder for specializing in certain trees of the class, then other classes available like Bruiser, Nomad, Psycho, possibly even one specializing in vehicles and driving seining how they're always a big thing in Borderlands

I remember finding a few maya backstory echos and her using her power to kill the leader of the monastic order that was using her to scare the population of the planet they were on...I can't remember if she was from that planet or not though.

also what brought pandora to the level that it is at now? I remember listening to the T.K. Baha echos about him coming to pandora and about the skags killing his wife...was it always such a rough place?

Lockpick would be good for the few stealthy classes, but everyone else would just blow it up, of shoot out the lock, or bash it down and not give a fuck.

An Excel spreadsheet could help a lot in the weapon making process, just make a page for every part of the weapon and another one where you just choose the basic weapon, put the result of every dice and the spreadsheet would take the modifiers of every part and give you the final weapon, with every stat and (if any) the special effects of that weapon, you'll get something like the in-game weapon card where you can see the stats and choose to keep it or sell it.

Why not take this, and have them roll for an "effect" which can be an increase, decrease or mix of the two to the gun's base stats.

Also you could try having that bonus system have a "scaling" effect where maybe one of the effects is getting to roll two more times for multiple effects and somehow nailing the "double reroll" a certain number of times upgrades the gun with a legendary effect they roll for, like bouncing bullets, bullets that drop grenades, multishots, curving shots and other zany shit like that to make sure people still get legendaries but it's not terribly likely. But I guess how many effects there are and how likely it is depends on the dice system. The reroll idea was cause I was thinking off a D20 and a chart with 20 stat effects since coming up with 100 unique stat changes would be hard without reusing shit like having 8 fire rate increase of different amounts rather than rolling for the increase/decrease amount.
