During the so-called ‘Cursed’ 21st Founding in the 36th Millennium, after the now destroyed planet Inculaba yielded mysteries still unknown to the majority of the Imperium, the 999th Space Marine Chapter was founded. In stark contrast to the other cursed Chapters, which have been plagued with gruesome mutations, often forcing the hand of the Inquisition, this particular Chapter was only disadvantaged with a faulty Occulobe. This fault meant that the eye and Occulobe implant would only work as normal with extra fluid; which in turn led the bodies of the Marines to overcompensate and produce more tears and as such, gave the Marines a constant look of sadness and sorrow.

Thus, the Mourning Sons were born.

Please note, that this is not the Crybaby marines, nor is it emo-wankery or anime bullshit. The Marines main ability is that they are perceptive, the more experienced among them gain the ability to perceive things on a completely different level, and as such are able to see the real misery and suffering of the galaxy in the state that it's in.

Pic related is our 3 main armor choices at the moment.

Let's fluff!

I'm not OP but said I would open this last tread because op would be off till friday

It was said that during his lifetime he was once given the esteemed honour of being admitted entrance into the Sanctum Imperialis, the chamber containing the almighty Golden Throne which housed the remains of the God-Emperor.

It was during this brief visit that he bore witness to the true nature of the Emperor, all of his divine plan and the miniscule workings of all of his plans. It was during this vision of complete and utter purity that the Silent Arbiter realised the unending war was not for naught and it would eventually culminate in the salvation of the Imperium and the human race. It was said that the Weeping Prophet shed tears as he was blessed with this divine revelation.

During a gruesome campaign against the forces of Chaos, when the fighting was at its most intense, when losses were many and victories were few, the Arbiter and a few trusted Marines made a desperate last push in order to break out of the situation they had found themselves in.

Calling on the divine might of the Emperor, but to little avail, Jeremiah watched as his fellow Battle-Brothers were cut down beside him by the forces of the Archenemy. Against overwhelming odds he fought onwards, taking injuries that would have outright killed lesser men, even fellow Marines. Scores of enemies fell under his righteous fury as he carved a bloody swathe of justice through the enemies. After receiving multiple fatal wounds he finally succumbed and fell to his knees.

>>
>>24415180
The forces of Chaos circled around the broken Arbiter, jeering and ridiculing the Marine. Jeremiah looked through hazy eyes and spat blood at the ground as he watched a lone figure emerge from the throng, clutching a knife oozing with foul enchantments and curses.

As Jeremiah focused on the cultist in front of him, he witnessed the true nature of the being in front of him, a tiny spark of white light, almost completely concealed by years of hatred, thousands of acts of heresy and corruption. Jeremiah’s eyes cleared from the haze that had overcome him, perceiving the events that may have come to pass. He saw the small light burst into a flame to rival a thousand suns, a truly dazzling beacon of hope against the unstoppable sea of darkness, and it was in this fiery pillar that complete salvation may have been achieved, the absolution of every man, woman and child in the Galaxy and the survival of humanity.

Alas, this divine gift, a literal boon from the Emperor had been squandered, merely to fulfil some petty weakness, frittered away to liars and criminals.

2/3
>>
>>24415180
It was at this revelation that Jeremiah began to weep, no longer tears of sorrow, nor tears of happiness, but tears of anger, grief, anguish and pain. The tears started as liquid, but as the visions he had seen struck him more deeply the tears turned to holy fire. Blue and white streaks poured from the Prophets eyes, the forces of Chaos recoiled in horror as the Silent Arbiter rose up from the ground, ignoring all previous injuries and grasped the cultist with both arms, as if embracing a lost son. Jeremiah grasped the cultists shoulders and looked deeply into the cultists eyes, who was unable to draw his vision away from the pious fury he had unleashed.

“Gaze into my eyes heretic, and see your mistakes.” The voice left the Prophets mouth as a mere whisper, but amplified tenfold around the surrounding Chaos hordes.

“Weep”. His final words purified the enemies in a sea of devout wrath. Cultists were instantly incinerated and demons were sent screaming back to the Warp.

As the battle subsided, the remaining Marines left their positions to find their beloved Master of Sanctity. As they waded through the corpses left behind they came across a single figure, kneeling in penitence, clutching a single skull. It was when they went to help him up they realised the Emperors blessing had unforeseen circumstances. Jeremiah’s eyes now glowed as a white hot flame, the fire that had rolled down his face earlier had scorched him beyond belief, scarring his cheeks and sealing his mouth shut. Brother Jeremiah was henceforth known as the Silent Arbiter, the Weeping Prophet.

Moto/chaplains fluff
The first saw suffering and led his Battle Brothers forth, as only through suffering could they truly find salvation.

The second saw anger and purged his enemies like no other, seeing it as the purest form of the Emperor's judgement.

The third saw pity in the eyes of the Silent Arbiter, and although a Marines hand can never be stayed, they still pity those who have fallen to the Ruinious Powers.

The fourth saw grief in the eyes of the now mute Brother and the sorrow they would inevitably suffer, for all they would lose and all the bonds that would be broken.

The fifth saw guilt for all they had failed, and would fail to do, in the service of the Emperor.

The sixth saw disappointment in the eyes of Jeremiah, both for the wasted potential of the enemies of Man and the failures of the Chapter to come.

The seventh saw happiness and content, for truly there is nothing greater than serving next to your fellow brothers in the holy service of the Emperor.

The eighth saw passion in the eyes the Prophet and that only through the fervor and zeal for the Emperor, would their duty be fulfilled.

The ninth, and last, saw fear. Fear for the consequences of failure and of the tasks ahead. To know this and overcome it, is every Battle Brothers duty.

More Master of Sainticity Jeremiah fluff

Their first assignment as a Chapter was a relatively small one, as the Mourning Sons purpose had not been fully decided. They were to accompany the transfer of Master Inquisitor Nikolai to the Argus system, a star system that was currently under the control of Master Inquisitor Victus.

Victus had been raised on the Lacrymis planet as a child and, like all members of the Inquisition, had slowly worked his way up the ranks and now stood as the overseer of all Inquisitorial activities within the system. His knowledge of the planet, and its innermost workings, had helped the ruling governors maintain a general level of peace over the entire planet. This influence had then spread to the neighbouring planets in the system, his unique blend of Inquisitorial justice and understanding of the populace had ensured that the system had flourished.

Crime and various cults were not unheard of on the planet, they did happen from time to time, but they were always put down before they got out of hand. The Inquisition had a great deal of presence within the system, so any cults that did form tended to stay well hidden and tried not to attract too much attention for fear of retribution.
>>
>>24415205
It was no secret that Inquisitor Nikolai coveted Victus’ job, many years before he had been Victus’ second-in-command, unfortunately due to a scandal in office, Nikolai had been demoted and sent to another sector to assist the Inquisition where they needed it. However, since that time Nikolai had used his cunning to ascend to the rank of Master Inquisitor, his relative youth working as a positive boon, with many members of the Inquisition realising that they needed some young blood to ensure the system kept running smoothly. Now he had returned with documents and letters from Grandmaster Inquisitor Ulbricht, giving Nikolai control over the system and moving Victus to another, less well-known location.

Chapter Master Fovus strode through the corridors of the Grand Palace, the seat of power on Lacrymis and where the governors would often be found. The Marines that followed him were all giants compared to the average citizen, anyone catching their gaze either bowed reverently or simple unable to move, awed by the sheer presence that the Marines exuded. Master Inquisitor Nikolai, quite an imposing man by himself, nevertheless paled in comparison to the Marines either side of him, Fovus the Chapter Master of the Mourning Sons, and Brother Jeremiah, the Master of Sanctity.

Mourning Sons.
Still not decided who we are descended from. Probably Alpha legion
999th Chapter.
Fleet-based.
Faulty Occulobe – leads to greater perception, new Marines can read body language much more clearly which leads to greater combat abilities. More experienced Marines are able to put this in conjunction with battle experience to figure out tactics, and the most mentally able (usually the Chaplains) are able to peer into the mind and soul of others without losing theirs in the process.
9 Companies – based on insight gained from Brother Jeremiah (hope, fear, passion, etc)
10th Company is a massive support unit comprising of Dreadnoughts, Scouts and the like
We do not get on well with the Inquisition.
We are on good terms with the Mechanicus, as we need to be to keep the fleet going.
We get on very well with the Salamanders when we encounter them, we try to keep the average citizen just as safe as they do. We will always try to save those who are worth saving, as they may be potential recruits.
Due to the Chaplains abilities, recruits are drawn from anywhere, so long as they have the necessary moral integrity that the Space Marines require.
Each Dreadnought in the Chapter, due to the Marine’s eyes being useless inside the sarcophagus, are always accompanied by 2 scouts to act as their eyes.
Constantly on the lookout for our Alpha Legion nemesis.
Particularly effective against Tzeentchian forces, due to our abilities to read body language and predict tactics, but really bad against him if the threat is afar...

since we're on good terms with the mechanicus does that mean we're actually pretty well off as far as good gear goes, i.e. lots of mk. VIII armor and the like?
>>
>>24415315

More like we have a good amount of assault gear and dreads
LOTS of assault gear, and some melle weapons has well more on the lines of swords and claws

>>24415221

Forget to add something good

>We don't get on well with MOST of the Inquisition. Radical Inquisitors would probably like us a lot, because they go up against other Inquisitors all the time as well, and seek to shake up the existing structure similarly to how we want to rebuild things. Fundamentalists would reeeeeeaaallly hate us though, and we would have to work hard not to run afoul of them.

>We're super effective versus Tzeentch at close range. At long range or on a campaign scale "hunting for clues" level, it's more in Tzeentch's favor because he can lead us astray, unless one of our experienced warriors is doing the searching.
>>
Dreadnoughts, scouts, and devastators, all of these make up the 10th company. 10th is a large company, being a reserve unit, a training unit, and a reinforcement unit, split up as needed in detachments to give extra options to the other 9 front-line companies.

Have 10th be like 500 or even 1000 warriors. Most of these will be scouts, and many of those will die because we are on crusade, and many more will be needed to replace losses, so I think having a large reserve pool is appropriate for a Crusading, Fleet based chapter. Of the companies that really see combat, there are about 900 marines, so we don't veer far from the Codex (or get crapped on by more inquisitors), yet we can replace losses well.

So we follow normal chapter size till the 10th

1st company is of veterans but shitty grade gear.

2nd is terminator with lots of assault gear

3rd are the diplomats manage the fleet. First to get involved in fights because they are already there.

5th some assault squads and good non terminator gear

6 7 8 normal squads

9 thunderhawks

10 scouts devastators and dreads
>>
Being a Dreadnought is the ultimate sacrifice. You have literally made yourself into a tool for the Chapter, and you will live in suffering until you die. I could see the Mourning Sons venerating their Dreadnoughts as the ultimate martyrs for the cause, and there might be a lot more of them than normal. Maybe.

If there are, I would recommend that we lean towards using a lot of Stormravens, because they can carry a single Dread.
>>
First Company, normally the purview of Terminators and high technology, instead voluntarily relinquishes their gear, taking only the most battered and damaged items so that their brothers may have better. They fight armed with faith alone, and rely not on material things.

The Second Company prefers to use the heaviest stuff. It is they who inherit the Terminator armor meant for First, and it is the Second that lead the charge, teleporting into combat, Assault Terminators all, letting their endless wrath cut a swathe from their enemies' flesh.

3rd Company are our diplomats. They remain aboard the fleet most of the time, coordinating both inter-chapter elements, the population aboard the large fleet, the people of the planets we visit to recruit from, and any Imperial emissaries we meet.

4th Company..... is kind of hard to write for. Probably they are the ones who undertake to hold the ground that has been burned and cleansed, laboring after the battle to rebuild what was destroyed.

5th Company is always at the leading edge of the fight, they ride aboard our advance vessels, seeking enemies to crush and allies to save, driven by the guilt they feel.
>>
6th company are our teachers, our re-educators, our personal trainers. They remember Jeremiah's disappointment and are relentless among the chapter in trying to whip people into shape that they may not disappoint the Emperor again. they also are well known for having some of the best eyes in the chapter, for they are always seeking out flaws to eliminate in both friend and foe.

7th Company are the ones who work among the people on a personal level. 3rd company may be better negotiators, 4th company may be the ones who wear sackcloth as they rebuild a burned city, but it is 7th company that tends to take the time to comfort the weeping child, to console the parent who has lost their own, and to reunite families split by war.
8th company is practically a company of Chaplains. Every one of them is a priest of the faith, for the Mourning Sons have seen that even though most Space Marines revere the Emperor as a father and not a god, Jeremiah showed them that the Emperor's love for them is indeed worthy of a god, and he shall be treated as such.

The 8th covers their armor in holy writ, carefully selected to present the Emperor's kind and loving side rather than his wrathful nature. Some have accused 8th of hypocrisy, especially when they destroy cultists with incredible fervor, but the men of the 8th know that the Emperor's love is only for the faithful, not for traitors.

The ninth represents fear, for though Imperial propaganda would tell you otherwise, even Astartes can be afraid. The coming dark looms large, but the truest test, when the chips are down, is whether or not the chapter will stand with the Emperor even when all hope seems lost and fear grips them by the throat and begins to strangle. These marines embrace the edge of fear, reminding themselves that they too may die, and that they must ensure that at all times their duty is done.
>>
The 9th squad often operates the dangerous role of aerospace superiority piloting. The brothers inside their Thunderhawks may rest easy, knowing that the skilled pilots of the 9th will read the battle around them with a practiced eye, and brave fearful antiaircraft fire to get them all to ground. After all, for an Astartes, what could be more terrifying than to be shot from the air by an errant AA shell or laser, never having landed to do the Emperor's duty? The 9th refuses to let that fear come to fruition.

>Please note, by the way, that the "commandments" do not define the ENTIRE character of each company, like they're Green Lanterns or something. I am specifically writing these to be an additional element that is stronger within a given company, not their ONLY defining characteristic.

My question is, if some marines develop the ability to see... potential and the like, the more famous ability of the chapter, how does that transition happen?
Is it induced in a ceremony or rite for marines who can develop the ability?

If i've missed some fluff point me to it, i was just thinking of doing some writefagging as a prequel to old Throu and his scouts, about an assault sergeant developing the gift in combat (In my mind a rare occurrence since the gift is induced by a ceremony)
Thoughts?

A young marine scout overlooks the shattered battlefield, awestruck at the sheer devastation.

Here the Mourning Sons grappled with the forces of Chaos, a nameless splinter fragment of World Eaters who had whipped the population of this small world into a frothing frenzy of hatred and blood.

Here it was that a great sacrifice was made, and a powerful daemon was summoned, cleaving its way through the planet's largest hive spire as it sought to build for itself a throne of skull and sinew to emulate and please its dark master Khorne.

The crusading fleet received the vox-calls and cries for help, and dozens of Space Marines descended from the sky on wings of fire, eager to crush the Imperium's enemies.

For three weeks the struggle ground on, and the losses on both sides were great. 5th Company dropped first, and were beaten back with nearly 25% losses, and as many injured. Reinforcements drawn from 2nd and 8th Companies fared better, but not by much.

It became evident that the planet was lost, and the Mourning Sons withdrew to their fleet, chanting a funeral dirge for the planet they could not save. As the entire chapter prayed for forgiveness, the mighty fleet unleashed its terrible weaponry and blasted all life from the infected cities. Perhaps some vestiges and refugees lived on in the wilderness, but the fires and ash clouds would make life difficult at best.

Into this seething wasteland strode the men of the 4th Company, backed by enormous quantities of mortal men and machinery kept safe aboard the fleet's support vessels. Their labors were herculean, but after a few weeks, the skies cleared and the golden sun beamed down on a rapidly developing infrastructure, made from old wreckage melted down and recycled according to ancient writ rescued by the Mourning Sons long ago.

An older marine joins the young scout, asking him if his survey of the terrain has turned up any lingering contamination. Seeing the shocked look on his face, (cont)

Some old quotes if you didn't see

Visionless?

As a side note, I could see vision quests being something this chapter might do fairly often. Peering into the stars and trying to read their meanings, staring into flames and trying to discern the Emperor's will. Even if they fail (and most of the time they will get no result), becoming able to distinguish even the faintest stars or thinnest wisps of flame is valuable training.
Vision quest as promotion rite? Guided by the Emperors Will and whatnot. Robes of station only earned afterward, and vision must be corroborated by chaplain to ensure authenticity? Eyes can lie after all. Don't really solely upon them.

Fighting from afar is seen as less important because it takes away from the strengths of the Mourning Sons. It's not "bad" per se, but i could see long ranged people filling several roles: Those who have been punished, those who have not learned to fight (scouts), and those who for whatever reason VOLUNTARILY take on the burden of guarding their other brethren and play the range game. A notable 4th category is of course the Dreadnoughts, who fight from the back because of their damaged bodies, blowing holes in enemy defenses with missiles and lascannons so that their more able-bodied brothers (with working eyes not sealed in a sarcophagus) can get in.
>>
>>24418067
Basically, we have like one or two guys who make it their business every thread to toss around the words ward and Mary Sue, in a clumsy attempt to troll us. the older marine rests his hand on the scout's shoulder, and shows him a seedling, transplanted from the orbiting hydroponics vessels.

"Life is eternal, young one. There are those who would tell you that men are fragile, that they are unworthy, that we do not deserve our place in this universe for there are forces so much greater than us that seek our demise. There is but one way to prove our worth, and the Emperor has shown us that way through his sacrifice aboard the Golden Throne. Live, and keep living. When you die, ensure that your people live on. When your people die around you, live on to rebuild, and grow stronger for it. Here, on this planet, we have overcome our enemies, though we failed the people of this world. And we will rebuild."

TL;DR, the Mourning Suns failed to liberate a planet invaded by Khorne, but they're trying to rebuild it and learn what lessons they can from it.
>>
>>24418240

So the occurrence would involve mediations of the marine, possibly mind games and some such, i would assume one of the chapters few librarians would be present as well as some chaplains, in my head the actual transition is painful, which is why it is induced by a librarian upon a worthy and more importantly, able Marine, this wouldn't stop marines from developing more advanced vision in the middle of a battle, considering thats when Jeremiah first developed his.
>>
>>24418286
We have defined some flaws for them, and more will come. The problem is that to really illuminate where they fall short, you have do larger writefagging, and not many people have done that yet. What I've just written is an attempt to illuminate a moment where basically, the chapter flat out failed at its duty to protect, at great cost of life to chapter and planet but refuses to simply leave without attempting to rectify their errors and tries to teach/learn what lessons they can from the experience.
>>
What of the Librarians?
>>
>>24418336
Yeah, this is similar to what I had in mind. At the most basic level, the vision quests train the simplest of the Mourning Sons' abilities, which is to have eyes that are good at discerning details. It puts them in the right frame of mind to later unlock the deeper ability of reading their opponent's true nature, and teaches them to rely on their elders for guidance through the difficult process.
>>
>>24418374
Thats actually why i put the overturning canteen bit in the Old Throu story, i like the idea of the marines watching flames and water flow, attempting to see how it will move to the point of anticipating the almost random movement.

May start write-fagging for this, only watching some SC2 replays atm, chances are it will be longer than the Old Throu story.
>>
>>24418361
Librarians would be heavily biased towards powers that allow actual mind-reading.

Our "generic marines" can get a good idea of whether or not someone is lying, what they might be lying about in a general sense, and whether or not they are contaminated by chaos or have turned on the Imperium.

The Librarians, because they have actual psychic powers, would be the interrogators, using their eyes and their mind in conjunction to give the chapter actual hard data on what is going on in the enemy's head.

In combat, they would probably not engage directly very much, but would instead transmit what they see to the soldiers and commanders, removing "fog of war" and ensuring that the Mourning Sons' command and control is optimal. They would also be able to spot enemies behind cover, and might learn to use their abilities to guide shots into areas that they might normally have no hope of striking.

Guardians, guides, and only rarely front-line fighters, these are the Librarians of the Mourning Sons.
>>
>>24418434
But in close combat they could use their abilities to fight even the fastest foes.
Useless against brutal enemies like Space Wolves or Tyranids, due to their randomness.
But perfect against well-trained enemies like the Eldar.
Or maybe the other way round? Because a primal attacker might be easier to predict than one who can play mindgames.
>>
>>24418286
The Mourning Sons' biggest weakness is that they are often overconfident. There are few problems that they believe they can't fix, and so they enter battles that they probably shouldn't, and get smacked around for it.

They're always trying to make things better, and they often succeed in the short term, but as a crusading fleet, eventually they must move on. It is very likely that after they're gone, everything they did falls back to pieces in short order.

An endless crusade of justice, restoration, and hope, that only rarely makes any permanent gains for the Imperium, usually in the form of conscripted manpower, salvaged tech, or more ships, to be carried on the crusade.

In my headcanon, and feel free to object constructively, it's kind of like if Tzeentch and Nurgle agreed to work together for a few minutes, bringing hope and change, only to have it slowly decay when they're gone. Hell is worse when you've seen Heaven. The Mourning Sons are emphatically not Chaos, but 40k being grimdark that it is, they actually may spread Chaos years and years down the line after their chapter has long since moved on.

Not always, of course, sometimes they succeed in setting up permanent Fortress worlds and naval installations, when they can get the other great powers of the Imperium to move into the power vacuum they leave and shore up the defense.

Mourning Suns are genuinely good people, but their labors are largely Sisyphean.
>>
>>24418483
The Librarian's can read details like any other Mourning Son. Fast reflexes are the chapter's genetic inheritance.

It's the high-level coordination potential that only psychic powers give them that makes them really dangerous.

And to answer your second question, the Eldar would be the most dangerous, because their "tells" are more subtle. It's easy to notice a Space Wolf bunching up all his muscles for a haymaker, it's hard to notice two wrist muscles tensing before you get stabbed with a ghost-sword. Only the very best Mourning Sons would be able to read a highly disciplined and finessed fighter's attack.

Only one guy ever achieved that level of power, Chaplain Jeremiah, the Weeping Prophet, the man who taught our chapter how to live.

It is in honor of him that we wear our heavy robes, and from his teachings, we have learned the Emperor's love for all his children, which fills us with rage that anyone should spurn that gift.

(from our writefagging perspective, the individual chapter members may hope to reach that level someday, the others never actually will. only one man wept divine tears, blessed with the fire of the Emperor)
>>
>>24418566

Indeed, Eldar/D.eldar would make the most... lively close combat enemy.

They are naturally faster, have reflexes as fast if not faster than the marines, and have harder tells.

The question is, how do they do Vs necrons? They are soulless machines after-all (I haven't read the newcron codex so you'd have to fill me in on relative info)
>>
>>24418664
Necrons? Well, the slower, more fucked up warriors that have been rusting for aeons we might just plain be faster than, eyes or no eyes. The Lychguard or horror of horrors, a Necron Lord or a Tomb Spyder? I doubt we'd be able to read them at all. Versus those kind of soulless monsters, we'd be no better off than generic marines. For a Mourning Son who is used to being able to read his opponent, fighting a Necron might be a very unsettling experience... assuming he survives.

Awesome, thanks.

Also as a general statement, I, and some of the other contributors can and already have done a good chunk of writefagging for this chapter. What we completely lack, as usual on the internet, is a drawfag who feels like helping us out. So, if there's anyone around who likes what we've come up with and has artistic skills of some variety, we would all love it if you could help us out, as we're getting close to having something to maybe put on 1d4chan.
>>
>>24420184
What we need is a template of stuff that we can fill in, so we can see what we're missing and what we need to work on.
>>
>>24420200
Well, we have a general chapter structure, with the Companies having been assigned their roles. We have a Figure of Legend, Jeremiah. We have a Venerable Dreadnought, whose name will probably become Plutus, and the two unnamed scouts who work with him.

We have in the previous threads a couple of chapter symbols. Getting some example pauldrons/chapter banners worked up would be good.

Unfortunately, every chapter is different in 40k, so making a "template" is pretty difficult.

You could use the Codex Chapter Organization image from the Lexicanum website as a template, erasing the existing text to write down our altered structure.
>>
>>24420263

Here's an idea. I'll come up with names for the ten Company Captains (I'm assuming that because the 10th is not just scouts, but Devastators and Dreadnoughts that it has a company captain), and everyone else can maybe help fill in details of who those men are?

I think we're best trying to look for inspiration with the names, rather than randomly generate them.

I will have a look into my mythology and see if there are any more noteworthy names that haven't been used, like Plutus.

>>

The Japanese.
It's a meme based on Code Geass.
>>
>>24420595
Chapter symbol is going to get us shit on for being similar to the Eyes of Mordred, another /tg/ chapter. In thread 2, i think, we had a Magic set symbol that was like a mask with stylized tear tracks that, with some adaptation, was judged to be pretty sweet if we could get someone to modify it a little.

Also, don't lean on mythology too heavily, we don't want to stereotype this chapter. It's made from people drawn from all over the place, wherever the fleet goes, we get new recruits, so the names should be somewhat varied, and because strong moral fiber can be fond in the least of men, shouldn't be too terribly ornate or "meaningful"
>>
>>24420602

i tought of 12 kingdons no kiding
>>
>>24420595
minor correction, colors of pauldrons are purple with black trim, not bronze with black.
>>
>>24420644
Forget the symbol for now then.

Are our Companies going to have varying fighting styles based on what 'emotion' the Captains saw in Jeremiahs eyes?
>>
>>24421038
The differences are more mental, based on emphasizing different aspects of Jeremiah's teachings, not a strict doctrinal difference. That said, some combat variance does exist, like with the 1st, 2nd, and 5th companies, as described earlier in the thread.
>>
>>24421038
The 9th shows the most difference, because they're made up mostly of aerospace pilots, carrying the others into battle and then providing heavy firepower from above and ground reinforcements when air power is no longer needed.
>>
>>24420595
>tfw someone pauldron'd the symbol I sketched up.

Sir. I made the most non space marine-y noise when I saw this. So thank you.
>>
>>24422521
It's a good symbol. Problem is, /tg/'s already made a symbol for a chapter similar to this. And we've already had one troll point that out in a previous thread.

That mask with tear stripes seemed to draw a lot of approval, though. Maybe dig that up and put some finesse on it to make it our own.

Also, to the guy who made that pauldron, do you have a program to do that or was it just photoshop/paint, because I've been praying for a pauldron designer forever but never found one, as i have no art skills.

Honestly, I would almost say to stay away from the eye/tear theme and go for something representing our other theme of crusading and rebuilding. Eyes look a little too Sauron-y, and let us never forget, one of Tzeentch's big symbols are eyes.

>>
>>24423276
Over-exaggerating the sad factor has been the single biggest troll-bait involving this entire chapter. We need to not go that route, lest it become the Emo Marines or something.

However, as I said, I do greatly appreciate you trying to help. We'll all (including you) come up with a different, better symbol.

Symbol we could use:

CANNON (and Cannon Balls): Said of one who has dared their terror in sieges and in battles.; a military engine for throwing ball, first used in the battle of Cressy, in 1346, by king Edward ; or, mounted in battery on the decks of ships, to fire balls on other ships. Symbol of authority, crusade and protection. Also, canting arms for surnames such “cannon” and the like frequently occur. (We could model this after a Thunderhawk or spaceship cannon instead)
>>
>>24423412

YOKE: A symbol of agriculture, servitude and obedience. Throughout the Old Testament, the yoke is a symbol of oppression. We find it as early as the story of Jacob and Esau, with a prophecy that at some time in the future Esau will gain the dominion and "break the yoke" from off his neck.

A broken yoke could be good to represent the chapter's endless struggle to break the Imperium and its people free of corruption and Chaos.
>>
>>24423448
LIGHTNING: The classical preservatives against lightning were the eagle, the sea calf, and the laurel. Jupiter chose the first, Augustus Caesar the second, and Tiberius the third. Bodies scathed and a man struck dead by lightning were said to be incorruptible; and the ancients held anyone so distinguished in great honour. The bolt of lightning is a traditional symbol of sudden illumination and the destruction of ignorance; it also represents a punishment of humans by the gods from the skies.

Lightning has long been the Emperor's symbol. Placing lightning somewhere on our iconography could work well with the theme of Jeremiah being touched by the Emperor's power.
>>
>>24423495
We are both blessed with the Emperor's "sudden illumination and destruction of ignorance", and punished, because we can never again turn a blind eye to the needs of the Imperium, or it's people, and never stop mourning that we cannot be everywhere at once to do the Emperor's will.
>>
>>24423495
BUCK (STAG): The Stag is the male deer; the male of the hind. As an emblem it is indicative of life (fabled to live over 1000 years), symbol of wisdom, regeneration and growth, and virility. Because its antlers resemble branches, the Stag has been associated with the 'Tree of Life' and because of the way it renews its antlers, it is used as a symbol of regeneration.

The Stag is a good representation of what the Mourning Sons strive to be: wise, strong, and bringing renewal to everyone they possibly can.

Do they achieve this in the grim darkness of the 40th millennium? Typically not, making things better only temporarily and usually only after great destruction, but this is still an ideal they hold themselves to. Unfortunately, they also try to hold others to that ideal, and are eternally sorrowful when mankind (almost always) falls short.
>>
So, those are some ideas. If you all have any other good ideas, feel free to share them. Avoiding one-dimensionality is the hallmark of good writing.
>>
So, what you're saying is that these guys are kind of idealists, forever looking for the best in people and almost always being brutally disappointed?

I had an idea for the the chapter symbol and thought I would submit it before I turned in for bed.

You take a slender arch with a triangle adjoined in the center at the pinacle of the arch. Color it red for the the symbolism of blood paving the way for creation.

Within the arch lies the tear symbol, perhaps colored yellow to signify the yoke of an egg. The symbol of unrealized creation.

Blow the year lie three small lightning bolts. One angled down from each side and one directly below the tear. Perhaps black or purple? Signifying scorched earth and latent power?

Just a thought.
>>
>>24431569
A sketch would be helpful. also, "blow the year"? What?
>>
>>24423448
>>24423495

>>
>>24436390
Sketching any ideas you have for the pauldron image would be really good. Comng up with a table of organization for the chapter would be helpful as well.

Drawing the before/during/after scene of Jeremiah's revelation is also something to consider.
>>
>>24436390
Drawing a scene wherein we see a dreadnought and two scouts from behind. The dreadnought is receiving fire control instructions from one of the scouts, and the other is chopping up a grot/cultist that tried to rush up to the dreadnought.

A scene in which dozens of marines are dropping from the chapter's many Thunderhawks and Stormravens.

Scenes of the chapter's large fleet with its flotilla of support vessels, either in combat or offloading supplies to a world in need.

A scene where one of the chaplains is screening potential recruits by reading their purity and intentions using his eyes.

Scenes involving the Mourning Sons rebuilding a ruined city alongside the colonists that will reclaim the planet for the Emperor.

Different chapter iconography, like pauldrons, company insignias, a banner for the chapter.

Hey, writing up a small 'campaign' of the chapter, it focuses on the 3rd and 4th companies, cleansing a system of a small cultist uprising, it focuses on the marines helping more than the combat companies going about smashing stuff, to hopefull give an idea about how the 3rd and 4th and other such non-norm aspects work.

Also, I keep having this odd vision of many of the marines from this chapter using double swords, either double chainswords or double powerswords, for a parrying/duelist style of melee, rather than using heavy hammers or great weapons.

If we go with a lighting bold motif anywhere as representative of the Emperor's revelation, symbol, and will, we could have our marines carry power javelins/spears as auxiliary weapons, maybe.
>>
>>24442345
YEEESSSSSSSSS. THIS IS MUCH BETTER.

Although the purple background should be darker, and eventually we will want to color the half face in the various Codex colors for each company. I think they're listed earlier in the thread. In this case, 2nd Company woudl be gold, i think.

Here's a choice between roman numbers or normal ones.
>>

1st Company: White or Silver (members of the 1st Company should also paint their helmet the company colour).
2nd Company: Yellow or Gold
3rd Company: Red
4th Company: Green
5th Company: Black
6th Company: Orange
7th Company: Purple
8th Company: Grey
9th Company: Blue
10th Company: Nominally white, however the company colour is not displayed on their armour, because of their need to blend with their surroundings on reconnaissance missions.

Also, I like roman/gothic numerals best. Fits the setting well.

You could also darken the purple even more, it's a deep, not fully saturated color, as >>24415289 shows.
