>It looks like we're gonna LIVE FOR BATTLE

You are Sir Erik Schnee, the "Phoenix Knight". You have been fighting for as long as you could remember, whether it be against foreign invaders, separatist rebels, or even common criminals. Your deeds in battle were so great and terrible that you caught the attention of Belkan nobility. As a reward for you valor for subjugating a rebel nation, you were knighted and granted possession of your very own personal battle tank.

It was during the First Europan War that you gained the title "Phoenix Knight", for your seeming inability to die despite many close calls. In one battle your tank was completely destroyed, yet you managed to emerge from the flaming wreck seemingly unscathed before walking twenty miles back to friendly lines.

You now lead the Phoenix Order, your own personal squadron. You've participated in every major battle you could remember, smashing countless Federation tanks and defensive positions. Unfortunately, you are now fighting on the defensive now. With Maximilian's invasion of Gallia ending in utter failure, and with Maximilian himself and his Drei Stern dead or missing in action, it has fallen to the Belkan Knights to lead the Imperial remnants back home.

Taking charge of the retreat is none other than the Princess of Belka and the Grand Master of the Belkan Knights, Karla Hohenzollern. With her are your two fellow knights, Sir Heinrich "The Indigo Heron", and Sir Fleisher "The Red Swallow".

Naturally, the four of you have taken it upon yourselves to form the rearguard for the retreat column, as any true Belkan Knight would never present their back to the enemy.

You see one of your squires, Phoenix 5, quickly approaching the column, his light tank kicking up dust and torn grass in its wake.

"Milord, enemies are approaching from the South!" Phoenix 5 radios frantically.

>Warn your fellows. This is information they must know.

CODEX ENTRY UNLOCKED

The Principality of Belka and the Belkan Knights: A small nation located on the Western fringes of the Empire, Belka has long served as a bulwark against invasion from the West, whether it be barbarians in the ancient times or the forces of the Federation in the present. Belka's large, flat fields and steppes served as the perfect breeding ground warhorses, and its vast iron deposits made the production of iron incredibly easy and cheap. As a result, during Middle Ages, Belka boasted one of the largest percentage of knights of any nation.

However, after a particularly brutal campaign of conquest, Belka was invaded and annexed into what would eventually become the Autocratic East Europan Imperial Alliance. As time progressed, the age of mounted knights in shining armor faded. However, they didn't disappear. They merely evolved.

Now, instead of suits of armor, the Belkan Knights pilot the mighty tanks of the Empire. Only the most honorable and skilled of squires can even be considered for crewing a tank, and only Knights were given the best of what the Empire's machine shops had to offer.

The Belkan Knights made a name for themselves in the First Europan War, where they inflicted terrible casualties against the Federation with relatively few losses of their own. Even know, several Orders are on various fronts fighting and dying for both their Princess and their Empire.

Belkans are particularly noted for their extreme loyalty. Should one swear an oath or make a promise, they are duty bound to honor it.

"We shall attack!" You yell, revving the engine of your tank, Phoenix Flame, an Imperial Heavy Tank with flaming phoenix wings emblazoned on its sides.

In unison, the rest of the Phoenix Order, four medium tanks and two lights tanks, spin to match your maneuver.

"Milord, is it wise to attack without alerting the others?" Phoenix 5 asks.

"And let the enemy gain the initiative? We are the Phoenix Order, and Phoenixes always ATTACK!"

Your Order turns south and begin moving at full speed. It's only then that you think of asking your scout what exactly he saw.

"5, what's the enemy's disposition?"

"I-I'm not sure, milord. at least ten. Maybe fifteen."

You grin. Good odds for any knight.

"Though I'm surprised. I never expected the Gallians to break the truce. They seemed like an honorable lot."

"They're not Gallian." Phoenix 5 interjects. "Federation. Definitely Federation."

You decide on an extremely aggressive pincer maneuver. While you and the medium tanks hold the attention of the enemy, your two light tanks will circle around and attack from behind. Not because their weapons were too weak, but because they were fast enough to cut off any possible retreat.

After all, you were yet to meet any Federation tank that posed a serious threat to you. As Phoenix 5 and 6 peel away from your formation, the Federation column quickly comes into view, and you have to say, you're not very impressed.

All of the Federation tanks consisted of Model 3s. While they were fairly respectable in EWI, they were hopelessly obsolete these days. You almost felt sorry for the poor souls forced into those moving coffins. But why would you feel sorry for honorless dogs?

As you and your order close in, the Federation tanks already begin firing. However, even with fifteen guns, none of them even come close to hitting you or your men. It was a pity. You were expecting at least some sort of challenge.

>All men, fire at will!
>Split up. Let's play with them for a bit.

The majority of the shots miss their marks, however, two manage to strike Phoenix 3. However, the weak 37mm shells fail to punch his armor, bouncing off like ball bearings. However, Phoenix 3 begins to lag behind slightly, no doubt temporarily disoriented from the hits.

By this point, you're close enough to the Federation tanks to be able to see the rivets on their hulls. More than within your effective range. I was time to show these dogs how Belkans fought.

>In case you don't know already, I only take the best of the first three eligible rolls.

Your return fire is a bit... disappointing to say the least. As the rest of your Order fires, only one of them manages to hit their target. Even then, it's only a glancing hit that tracks one of the Federation tanks, causing it to screech to a halt.

Your own shot, however, is on target as expected. Your heavy cannon punches straight through the nearest tank like it was paper, immediately setting it on fire.

You decide to keep closing in. The Model 3's 37mm and 75mm guns weren't really that effective against your tanks' armor, unless they managed to get behind you, which only a very incompetent knight would let happen.

However, the Federation tankers decide to humor you by trying anyways.

Another storm of shells slams into your tanks' front armor, however, your tank seems to be unscathed. Apparently the Federation tankers had SOME tactical sense and were trying to eliminate your lighter armored companions.

However, Phoenix 1 takes a rather serious hit. It doesn't do major damage, but you can see that a chunk of his front armor has been blasted off.

By this point, you're close enough to use your secondary 122mm mortar in addition to your 76mm main gun. While normally reserved for entrenched positions and enemy infantry, the 122mm was more than enough to demolish light tanks if it were able to hit.

Both of your shots are on target. Your main cannon only glances one of the Model 3s, but you successfully force it to break off.

Your mortar shot, however, is far more successful. The shell manages to land right under a Federation tank's left tread before exploding, sending the vehicle flying in the air before landing on its back.

At this point, both armor groups are still closing distance. You veer to aim for one of the tanks head on. You intend to ram him before he can reload.

Meanwhile the other Phoenixes lend their supporting fire.

One of you men manages to knock out another Federation tank, blowing a crater into its turret.

Meanwhile, you continue on your path forward. The Federation tank ahead of you doesn't chance course, most likely because they honestly didn't expect you to try and ram them.

You tank shudders as your heavy track shreds the smaller tank to pieces. You're probably going to have to do some major repairs to it later, but it was certainly worth the feeling of literally crushing your enemy beneath your treads.

At this point, you can hear cannon fire in the distance.

"All units, fall back. Let the dogs run and hide." You say. You actually considered giving chase, but you remembered that you're not on the offensive. Your duty now is to protect the retreat column, which you clearly can't do if you're chasing Federation tanks all day.

As your tanks turn around, you see three tanks on the horizon in a position to overlook the battle. Squinting, you recognize them to be Princess Hohenzollern, Sir Heinrich, and Sir Fleisher's tanks. How long were they there? Had they been watching the battle the entire time?

"I'm surprised." Karla greets you as you dismount your tank."You showed restraint on the field of battle. I never knew you had it in you."

While Karla has a warm smile, you wryly note that Sirs Heinrich and Fleisher are glaring at you, no doubt angry at your flagrantly aggressive preemptive strike. Well, that teaches them not to send scouts.

"There was no glory in hunting down defeated dogs." You say, shrugging. "I honestly lost interest. Any enemy with no will to fight isn't worthy of my attention."

"And here I thought you might have actually changed." Karla sighed. "Get your vehicles inspected. We'll get the convoy moving again once you any damage fixed."

"Princess!" Sir Heinrich exclaims, stepping forward. "You aren't going to punish Sir Schnee's insubordination? He should have informed us of his actions!"

You scowl. You always thought Sir Heinrich was a little too prissy about rules and regulations. He never seemed to let himself enjoy the finer things in life, like fighting a worthy opponent to the death.

"Now now, Dimitri, Erik is a Knight just like you. He is entitled to act on his own initiative as he sees fit. And please don't call me Princess. It makes me sound like a child."

"As you wish, Princess."

Karla sighs and looks to the West. She' been doing that quite a lot ever since you started the retreat, though you're not sure why. She doesn't quite seem herself. It almost seems like she's feeling DOUBT.

A disturbing thought for a warrior like you.

3: With her help, overthrow the Empire.
4: Marry her and become the new King of Belka.

"Is something the matter, Princess? You haven't been yourself lately." You say bluntly. Sirs Heinrich and Fleisher just stare at you slack jawed for having the GALL to speak to the Princess frankly.

"And now I remember why I keep you around." Karla laughs. "Poor Dmitri and Detlef would no sooner bite their own tongues off than confront me about something. And stop calling me Princess."

Sirs Heinrich and Fleisher just look away and cough awkwardly.

"If you really want to know, I had to leave something behind in Gallia, and I'm afraid I'll never get it back again." Karla smiles sadly. "Such is life in Belka, eh? Oaths must never be broken, for what would we be without them?"

You note that Karla did a very good job of answering your question without actually answering anything.

It's two more days until you finally reach the Empire's borders. The Federation never staged another attack, and any Gallians you met were wise enough to give you a wide berth. Karla is the last to cross the border, though whether it was because of her knightly pride or because of that treasured thing she spoke of, you're not sure.

>And that's the end of this little side chapter! We'll return to Jager's side of the story Friday 7-8 PST!

Except not. There are two types of sword usually called a "claymore". The one that is ACTUALLY called a claymore is the traditional bigass two-hander. The other sword to which the name is often applied (inaccurately), and which Jack Churchill actually carried, is more properly called a "Scottish Broadsword", a basket-hilted, one-handed sword.
