You are Princess Lydia Tannhäuser Von Cygnus Gates the third, duchess of Tannhäuser and executive director of the Royal Rocketry Corps of Midland.
The summer solstice is now over and it's back to business as usual on Tannhauser island. If the business of the Royal Rocket Corps can ever be considered usual.

With new grants from parliament, and royalties from newspapers, your operational budget has been raised to 38.

Plans have been drawn for the new Mk4c Cheribum (Mass 12, Reliability 5/10) rocket. Building a prototype will cost 12 points, and upgrading it will cost 12 points per step. Max reliability is 14/15 for all parts that have not yet flown.

Cobham is having some trouble adjusting to her newfound fame, meanwhile your other pilots are all excited to follow her into space.

Prince Orion's comand of the Anglish language is improving under the Tutelage of Mister Luxon. His sister, Maia, has been spotted by the guards wandering around on the beaches at night by the guards, who have been instructed to allow them free passage as long as they stay out of secure areas.

How will you spend this turn?
>Train yourself in stamina, piloting, engineering, combat, or languages (costs 1 RnD point)
>Work on developing an Automatic computer with the computational staff (costs 9 RnD points)
>See what the alchemists are up to
>Go stargazing
>Something else?

You have 38 RnD points and 3 luck points, your current outfit is the "Frilly dress" (No bonus or penalty)

We should look into improving upon the Suthlanders' reflective balloon system. While we have a way to send Void Knights into space and back, it's not very flexible; we should begin work on something that lets us change orbital planes, at the very least.

(Art by Starboy)
>>
>>24498752
Ms Kenaway actually sent you a document explaining the Balloon system. It's quite detailed, explaining how much pressure is required to inflate a balloon in a vacuum without exploding it. Nothing that would help with changing orbital planes however.

There rockets are still lagging behind yours and have a failure rate of almost 50%
>>
>>24498832
We shall develop the Automatic Computer, MultiVAC (Multiple Variance Automated Computer).

>See what the Alchemists are up to.

Budget:
9RP - Invent Automated Computer
2RP - Train Harker Engineering
1RP - Train Cobham Engineering
1RP - Train Orion Engineering
2RP - Camera Module 19/20
9RP - Invent Thruster Module
6RP - Improve Mk2 Capsule 18/19
8RP - Improve Photovoltaic Power Cells 5/9
>>
>>24498957

We should hold off on the computer, and do that while we cannot launch during hurricane season. Let us focus on the thruster instead; we should have enough data to build a small, Void optimized liquid rocket that can be turned on and off like maneuvering thrusters but more efficiently so, by now.

We should perhaps see if it's possible to offer some hints to Jakisan, without doing so officially?

Finally, did Mrs. Cobham see anything unusual up there?
>>
>>24498992
"Unusual? Well I'm not sure what counts as usual in the void, your highness. There were a lot of stars, many more than you would see on earth, even on this island."
>>
>>24499076

Did she see anything moving? Actually was she able to spot the balloon at all, or maybe debris from the ones that blew up? We believe they'll eventually burn in the atmosphere, but...
>>
>>24498992
Alright, I'll concede the computer, since there's no way to get it ready to launch before the Typhoon season.

The 9RP for Invent Thruster Module can be reduced to 3RP, since the Thruster is a Mass 1 component.

That gives us 15RP to use.
We can spend that to get 5 points of Reliability on the Thruster, increasing to 4/7.
>>
>>24499076
Did she see any shooting stars?
And what happened when we lost communication during re-entry?
And how was weightlessness?
>>
"You want a chemical rocket that can be turned on and off in the void and efficient enough for orbital maneuvers? I already have designs planned using Inhibited Red Fuming Nitric Acid as an Oxidizer, that should give it plenty of pow..."
"Geoffrey, please do not bother her highness with such crazy ideas, we've gone over this, IRFNA isn't stable enough for a manned rocket."

>>24499118
"Moving? No why? and there was no sign of the Balloons, I imagine they must have been so far away. You feel so terribly small up there. Weightlessness is incredible, I mean real weightlessness, not just Harker's terrible flying."
>>
>>24499159

Sounds good to me! A mass 1 thruster will be good for most things until we actually try to land on the moon.
>>
>>24499212

"We should know if you have any recommendation for what provisions to bring for longer jaunts! The stuff we gave you was really a very miseducated guess..."
>>
>>24499212
"Did you have any trouble consuming liquids or foods? We will need to know for longer journeys in space."

Now let's find out what the Alchemists have been working on.
>>
>>24499289

If it's not useful for a thruster, maybe it can be for a probe. Sounds like something that would burn very bright and be very visible.
>>
>>24499232
"Well, that tangy orange drink was rather nice. And no, I was able to gulp it down with no problem. I suppose if you can swallow hanging upsidown, you can swallow in zero gravity."

>>24499310
"INFRA is a highly corrosive acid" Minerva explains to you. "Professor Hawtrey here thinks it would be funny to use it as an oxidizer. Please don't listen to him."
>>
>>24499346
This TANG, perhaps we should see if it can be marketed. We shall ask that test groups back on the mainland be asked to try it, to see if it becomes popular.

What has Minerva and the Alchemists been working on?
>>
>>24499346

There are enough things that can break without putting drums of acid in our rockets. We ask Professor Hawtrey to make us a small demonstrator, just for kicks; if he manages to do so without injuries, MAYBE we could consider it.
>>
>>24499448
"It's called IRFNA, not INFRA and the I stands for Inhibited, It's no less dangerous than anything else we work with if we take proper precautions. Seriously Minerva, you work with invisible death rays, you should know better."
>>
>>24499522
...Is this all that the Alchemists have to offer us?

>>24499448
And you! Stop encouraging him; we'll never get anything done at this rate.
>>
>>24499571

We're all going to die horribly, eh?

We should ask the Navy contingent here if they have any data on possible Hun inteerest in a space program. They may have recently lost a major war, but that doesn't mean they won't want to come back for seconds and they don't care if they lose scores of men.
>>
>>24499625
Fortunately the armistice treaty forbids them from developing rockets or radio reactive weapons. If they have broken that treaty, the ministry of intelligence hasn't heard yet.
>>
>>24499718

That's one thing to relax about for now then -- these rockets are easy to detect!

So which budget do we go for?
>>
>>24499765
Consensus is needed, Invest in MultiVac or not? And how will the extra 6 points.
>>
>>24499798
2RP - Train Harker Engineering
1RP - Train Cobham Engineering
1RP - Train Orion Engineering
2RP - Camera Module 19/20
3RP - Invent Thruster Module Mass 1
15RP - Improve Thruster 4/7
6RP - Improve Mk2 Capsule 18/19
8RP - Improve Photovoltaic Power Cells 5/9
>>
>>24499798
We will invent MultiVAC during our Typhoon season.
>>
>>24499997

secobd!
>>
>>24500013
>>24499997
Budget confirmed, however only one point may be spent per pilot per turn, so one point remains.
>>
>>24500013

Sounds prudent
>>
>>24500172

train ourselves in stamina

need to eventually be able to walk on the mun
>>
>>24500172
Then spend the point on improving Photovoltaic Power Cells by another point in Reliability.

>>24500246
If we train then we can't take any actions such as talk with the Alchemists.
>>
>>24500172
Train ourselves. Stamina or Piloting.
>>
>>24500448
To what end? We're nowhere close to having a rocket that can get us to the moon.
>>
>>24500502
Extra point, why not use it for something useful.

Oh dear, no consensus ever. I'll allow you to train stamina even though you've already talked with the alchemists.

Stamina is always useful.

>Equipping: Bathing dress. (+Swimming, -Indecent)
>Training: Stamina

Summer draws onwards and you keep busy by swimming in the lagoon. It's a great way to keep in shape, and very exhilarating. Dame Palmer instructs you on different strokes and how to hold your breath. You can't keep up with her or Orion, but you are managing feats you didn't know were possible.

It is now 2 turns until the start of Typhoon season, your RnD budget has refreshed.
>>
>>24500563
We'll never get consensus if you change rules like that around.
>>
>>24500563
9RP Build Mk4a, Mk4b
Launch Harker into space (since you houseruled that Capsules are always re-usable with no extra Mass requirement, and we have a single Pathfinder).

10RP Improve Thrusters 9/12
10RP Improve Photovoltaic Power Cells 10/14
1RP Improve Orion Piloting
1RP Improve Harker Stamina
7RP Improve Radio-Reactive Power Cells 5/10
>>
>>24500733
That would be a sub-orbital launch because you need two stages to get into orbit. You would also need a Mk4a, which is 3 points.
>>
>>24500776
>9RP Build Mk4a, Mk4b
6RP for Mk4a, 3RP for Mk4b.
2 stages, and re-using the Pathfinder from Cobham's launch since all Capsules are re-usable now.
Everything's already been accounted for.
>>
Rolled 10, 8 - 2 = 16

Sir Harker is Excited to be the first /Man/ in space, and the Pathfinder is refurbished and a new rocket is constructed.

There is much less fanfaire this time, as this is all something that has been done before. But this is still an important launch. Cobham stands by as the Capsule controller, and you count down to the launch.

>>
>>24501015
...or wait, are high rolls good? I can't remember. Ignore me if I make no sense.
>>
>>24501054
It's a roll-under system, and we barely scraped a success out of this.
>>
Rolled 2, 6 - 2 = 6

>>24500980
The archangel soars off the launchpad with Harker in tow. "I-increadible! This is incredible your h-highness! Everything is going j-just fine!"

The main engine cuts off and is discarded. T minus 30 seconds until apogee burn.
>>
>>24501100
The Circulation burn finishes, and telemetry is transmitted back to the blockhouse control room. However something seems to be wrong, Harker's altitude is lower than expected. It's still safely above the atmosphere, but in this orbit, he will be traveling slightly faster than before...

"Pathfinder to Tannhauser, Come in Tannhauser, orbital insertion complete. It's amazing up here."
>>
>>24501169

we should inform him of the calculations being slightly off and ask if he can correct it up there.
>>
>>24501220
He won't be able to correct it with the RCS, not if he wants to be able to return home. It shouldn't impact the mission at any rate.
>>
>>24501252
> It shouldn't impact the mission at any rate.

famous last words for 400 please!
>>
>>24501280
Worst that will happen is his orbit will naturally decay after days rather than months. Now if he was in a higher orbit, that would be worse.
>>
>>24501320

I was just saying that line falls under other certain lines such as:

"Yeah we are getting married after the war!"
"Been on the force for 20 years, todays my last patrol in the neighbor hood. Can' wait for retirement!"
"I'm going to destroy the Gundam Alex and propose to that girl i met here on the colony when I'm done!"
>>
>>24501509
"At any rate your highness, Everything seems nominal. Any instructions before I pass over the horizon?"
>>
>>24501535
"Watch for any debris, and come home safe, Sir Harker."
>>
>>24501778
"Rodger! I'll also keep an eye out for Ms Kenaway's balloon, if I can spot it."
>>
Harker's spacecraft passes over the horizon, 20 minutes later it reapers on the other side. "Pathfinder to Tanhauser, Come in Tanhauser, it's awfully quiet up here. How are things back on earth?"
>>
>>24501809

have somebody double check where he should be landing

>>24502103
"Its going Well Sir, you might just be the fastest man alive again with the way your craft is going."
>>
>>24502103
"Everything appears to be working as intended, Sir Harker. Please be careful in case the communication problem Dame Cobham had also affects you."
>>
Rolled 4, 6 - 2 = 8

>>24502148
"Only in overland speed, Cobham's orbital velocity exceeds mine. I tried to bounce a signal off of the Balloon, but it seems my aim was off, unless you are just being mean to me. Anyways, adjusting attitude to retrograde and beginning de-orbit burn. Lets see if that was just a fluke last time."

"Be careful Captain! I can't have you dieing here." Cobham interjects over the radio.
>>
>>24502298

"We would never dream of being mean to you when you are in space. When you get back down here though we'll have several photo shoots of you on the beach in your dress uniforms and Void armor!"
>>
Rolled 4, 3 - 2 = 5

"Burn complete, the capsule is starting to get hot, flames on the outsi..." The radio dies again.
>>
Rolled 6, 10 - 2 = 14

The NAVY confirms the capsule's position, and that like before, it appears to be in one piece. Descending normally. Again radio transmissions just stopped inexplicably when the capsule entered the atmosphere.
>>
"Pathfinder to Tannhauser, I don't know if you can hear me, but the chute is deployed, It looks like I'm coming in normally. Radio dosn't seem broken, but I lost all contact when the flames appeared, just like last time."
>>
>>24502986
We must work out why this occurs.
Speak with Smith and Minerva upon it.
>>
>>24502986

"Good to hear Sir Harker. We'll have somebody on the way to pick you up soon. So any ideas on what to add to the program now that you have been to space yourself?"
>>
>>24503002
Smith: "Well it happened twice, but it is the same capsule, It might just have a faulty radio. Maybe it's sensitive to heat?"
Minerva "We'll have to try with a new radio, It clearly has something to do with the atmospheric heating. I wonder if we can recreate those temperatures in a lab?"

>>24503074
"Yes, everyone needs to see the view from up here as soon as they can. That's all I can say really. Hmm, I wonder..."
>>
>>24503118

"Last time you did that the lord protector was very cross about me disappearing with just you and Amelia in a jet. But do go on it was most informative at the time and any idea you have has some merit."
>>
"Well I suppose he'll have to come with you as an escort, Ahh, the ocean is catching up quickly now. I suppose I'll be having a swim soon." Radio contact is lost once more as the Capsule dips below the horizon and hits the water.

If everything is going perfectly, a series of inflatable bags will cusson the impact and serve as a life-raft, providing floatation until the Navy picks him up.
>>
Alright, thread is dead, and it's time for me to go to sleep. Next thread will be on Tuesday at 1800 UTC (6pm PST) maybe earlier because things move more smoothly earlier in the day.
