"Do you think maybe you could test the waters while you're at it?"

"You want me to see how open she is to...." Rider trails off before realizing. "Really?"

"I'm not saying brainwash her or something. I'm just saying place a hint and see what she thinks."

"Yeah, that sounds a lot more reasonable actually." Rider responds with a thoughtful nod as I walk over to Sakura.

I wrap an arm around her and she flinches slightly and relaxes into it as she see my reflection in the glass. "Sempai. I was just trying to figure out what to make for lunch." She hesitates. ".... You have that meeting, don't you?"

"I was going to see if Saber was willing to go along." I answer after a moment. "She's been cooped up in the house for too long, and I'm pretty sure if I leave alone again Rin will have my head on a pike."

She giggles at the thought. "Yeah, she probably would. You aren't good at judging risks."

"No, I am. I just don't care." Sakura flinches. "Alright, out with it. What's wrong."

".... Nothing's wrong." Sakura responds obviously aware that I'm not going to believe her.

"You're acting like something's wrong. you don't just do that for no reason."

She's quiet for a minute. "I just... it worries me too. You go and do the right thing, but it's like you don't really care what happens to you. It's like you don't care about yourself."

"I care, I just care about you more."

"What happens to us if something happens to you?" Sakura comments. "You're the only thing that's been keeping this war from being... a war. It would also make Nee-san sad, and Saber sad and...." She trails off having turned back to look at me.

Wow. I think SHirou should be genuinely shocked here a bit. So many people are depending on him. So many dreams will be snuffed out if something hapens to him.

I'll be he never even considered it.

"You go on. You're all incredibly strong, so if something happened to me I think whoever did it wouldn't last long enough to gloat about it. Jokes aside, you would go on. It'd be nice if you thought of me every now and then, but I'd want all of you--Saber and Rider to--to live and be happy. I have every intention of surviving to see you all happy though, because the second I turn my back you all go to pieces. So spend a little of that worry you have for me on what you're going to do after we stop this war."

>"And Sakura? Thanks for keeping things in perspective for me. It really helps me a lot."
This is important. Sakura (along with Ayako and Issei) really get the 'muggle' perspective of Shirou Is Not Sane. And out of all of them, Sakura seems to be the one who's known Shirou the longest, as well as understanding what it's luike to be a fundamentally borken human being.

Reminding her that she keeps us on the level in a way no one else probably can is of huge value, to her sanity and our long-game plans of Everybody Lives and Everyone Is Happy.

And I'd be a fool to forget to say that I, too, appreciate these threads, AC-guy, and love it when they come each week.

For a moment, I genuinely don't know what to say for a long moment. "... And you sad?" she hesitates before nodding. "I'm sorry, but I need to take the risk. I don't know what I'd do if something were to happen to you." A memory of smoke drifts across my minds eye. "... but I do know what happens when I put myself first. I wouldn't... I wouldn't be me. Would you even like it if I changed that much?"

".... Sempai?" Sakura asks, surprised. She almost sounds scared for some reason.

"Thanks." I tell her with a smile, giving her a gentle kiss on the forehead. "Thanks for keeping things in perspective. Sometimes it's easy to lose sight of the bigger picture. I don't think I could forgive myself if I managed to make you all sad when I'm busy trying to help."

Sakura's silent for a long time before she returns the hug and gives me a kiss on the cheek. "Honestly Sempai, I think you needed that more than me." She smiles a little weakly before going back to dig in the fridge.

I'm not sure what she means, and I can't quite bring myself to ask as I start to turn away.

I pause walking away and look back to her. "You know you're important to me, so if anything's ever bothering you, I'll be here. No matter what."

She blinks concerned before giving me a shaky smile that does nothing to reassure me as I walk away. As I do, the phone rings.

"Emiya."

"Hey, kid. We're going to be waiting at a restaurant called 'Koushuuensaikan Taizan' in the shopping district. You know the place?"

Images of a spicy hell dance through my head. "Yes. I know it."

"Awesome. We're going to wait for about a half an hour before assuming you chose to stand us up. Or at least that's what my Master said."

"Alright. Would you be terribly offended if I brought a servant along?"

"No actually, as jumpy as Master's being it might be the smart thing actually. Can I make a request as to which one it is?"

"No."

"Damn, worth a shot." He comments before hanging up the phone.

I see Rin approaching out of the corner of my eye. "Finally got the call?"

"Yeah. Just going to go ask Saber to come along as backup."

She nods, and Caster reluctantly agrees to release her to me for the moment. As I head to the door, I see the sisters preparing to cook together. I stop and grab the black coat I've been wearing as Saber and I step outside.

"So." I begin as we get a few steps away from the house. "I recently got to experience what talking to me is like from the other side."

Saber turns to look at me. "And?" she asks confused.

"I feel like I owe several people apologies. First and foremost you and Rin. I've already had a chance to speak to her though."

"I see." She frowns slightly. ".... So why are you apologizing?"

"Because I didn't realize how irritating it was?"

She sighs. "It was at times, but I've experienced much worse." She frowns a flash of anger in her eyes. "MUCH worse." I swear I hear her mumble something like 'meddling goddamned wizard' under her breath before she sighs and looks at me. "I don't particularly mind though."

".... You don't?"

"No. It's simply a part of who you are and how you deal with stress and uncomfortable topics. Rejecting something so simple because of a minor irritation is.... pointless. You might as well reject the whole of the person."

"That's an interesting way to look at it."

"It's not like I'm without flaws. You would know, with the pleasure you take in trying to ignite my temper." She smiles. "More simply, nobody's perfect. I'm not and it's foolish to assume you should be."

"I could be better."

"By the way, I think it's only fair that I warn you, the restaurant is rather famous for spicy food."

"Oh? You don't really cook hot food....." She smiles as though anticipating it.

"No, not really." I respond uncomfortably. "It's not normal hot though. It's hot like the depths of hell itself. Especially the Mapo Tofu. Apparently a Priest said he liked it and the owner said it was hot enough to burn the sin out of your body."

Her eye twinkles with excitement before hesitating. "Priest? You think it might be Kirei?"

"... Huh. I don't think there's that many priests running around this city actually. Mostly it's the Monks we go with as far as religious things...." I pause to think about it. ".... Kirei? Somehow I can't picture him smiling about food. Or anything."

"... Perhaps." Saber responds, slightly less enthused.

The silence drags for a few moments. "So..... I've been wondering something."

"Yes?"

"Recent events have had me.... reevaluating things. Making me think about my life and the people in it." She watches me curiously. ".... And I realized something. Out of all the people who are important to me, the only one I don't really know that well is you."

Saber blinks, surprised. "... Important?" She hesitates. "Wait, how do you not know that much about me? I thought you said I was famous in this age."

"Well yeah, 'King Arthur' is. And since something so basic as the fact that you were actually a woman managed to slip by the entire world, I'm not certain how trustworthy it is. Especially since it means some stuff couldn't have happened the way it did. You mentioned the thing with Lancelot already...."

She sighs. "Yes. I wish they hadn't kept it from me, since I wouldn't have objected. Indeed it would have made some things easier, since I couldn't really produce an heir....."

"Yeah." I pause. "Actually, what was the deal with Mord-"

"I don't want to talk about it."

".... Alright. Though, I'm curious about something." She shoots me a glare. "Not Mordred related. At least not..... I'm curious about Merlin. You talk like you hated the guy, and history seems rather conflicted on whether he was 'good'.... but he was there and apparently a trusted member of the court?"

Saber looks away thoughtfully. "He wasn't evil. He was.... infuriating. Imagine having a friend who wants the best for you, and to teach you. But this friend never explains anything directly, instead manipulating you to play out some form of twisted Aseop."

"Huh."

"He never explained anything. I asked him once why he didn't, and he told me that he played by different rules, and even explaining those rules would rob him of his powers." she shakes her head. "He was brilliant too. Even if he never used his intellect for anything productive.... ever.... nobody can deny it was there. He also.... There was an argument once where he did something to upset me and told me he knew it was a bad idea, and that was why he did it."

"... What?"

"Apparently he made the mistake of looking ahead to see how I would react to something, and then once he saw the future he had to walk the road to that future. If anything other than what he saw happened, it would have terrible consequences."

"...Like what?"
>>
>>24564808

"He never explained!" She exclaims angrily. "He always said he was doing what was for the best, but he never explained the why, how or what of his plans! We were afraid sometimes to even ask him about something in case it derailed some huge important scheme, and KNOWING the value we placed on him and his work he used our trust to pull pranks!"

"... Wow. That sounds..... incredibly frustrating."

"Yes. Yes it was. He offered to teach mer magic you know. The idea of learning his ways terrified me. He already practically had the entire kingdom at his mercy, I'd rather not contemplate what he might've done to me if I were to bend knee as an apprentice."

Was at a bookstore about a month ago and found out that there was an extra chapter to The Once and Future King called "The Book of Merlyn" that was published separately. It's set the night before the Battle of Camlann, and I think Saber would understand more than a little of what Arthur's going through in it. A lot of asking what Arthur wanted to do with his life instead of being king. Heartbreaking stuff, at the end.
>>
>>24565084
I learned this the hard way, but you provider probably hasn't bumped your limit up.
I was stuck on 256kbps/12GB for 5 goddamn years before shit got fixed.

Data plans stopped existing in Germany about half a decade ago.
And the Telekom is the most stable of all providers in the country.
That's the ultimate level of cockbag. Also, their own services don't count to the limit... Thankfully, our politicians understand what net neutrality is, even if they don't give a fuck about the data limit thing.

"... I'm not sure there's anything in particular worth talking about. Most of the things that weren't recorded were things of no import- at least on the grander scale. Disputes about pigs and farm land, traditional court politics." she shrugs. "Nothing that really stands out. Nothing that isn't Merlin related anyway."

"You don't feel like talking about that?"

"I remember your past advice to make the most of my time here, even if it's limited. I believe one lifetime of fuming over his antics was enough. As dear as he was, unfortunately, I am somewhat glad that he's been dead for hundreds of years."

"Didn't you say he could see the future?"

".... While I wouldn't put it past him, the idea of Merlin focusing on a task to manipulate events hundreds of years down the line...." She shakes her head. "No. I flat refuse to believe he's involved with anything. I refuse to be paranoid about something like this, he wouldn't have done something this drastic...." I almost can't hear the words as she mumbles them. "He would never be so cruel."

Before I can say anything, we arrive at the restaurant and Saber's entire demeanor changes. "What was that food that terrified you? Mapo tofu?" She smiles. "I think I will enjoy this."

I walk over to the booth where they're sitting and take a seat across from them with Saber. "I hope I'm not interrupting?"

"No." The Woman answers at the same time that Lancer says 'Maybe' and shoots me a look as though asking why I couldn't have waited out the argument. She glares at him breifly before returning to a very businesslike demeanor and facing me. "Well then, Saber's Master."

"Lancer's Master. I suppose a proper introduction is in order?"

"Bazett Fraga McRemitz, Hunter for the Mages association."

"Emiya Shirou, Amateur Magus." When she hears my surname she does a double take and shoots Lancer a confused glance while Lancer looks confused.

"... Emiya? Any relation to Kiritsugu or Noritaka?"

"I don't recognize the latter name, but Kiritsugu was my Father."

A single bead of sweat goes down the side of her face as she contemplates this. "I... see." She visibly calms her demeanor as she sees a waiter approach. Saber orders the Tofu, but Lancer manages to convince his Master not to share her fate. I order the least spicy thing on the menu, which unfortunately includes a rather large helping of peppers.

"So then, Mister Emiya." Bazett begins. "You said some... interesting things when we last met about the state of the war."

"Yes. I assume you can see why I'm requesting something of a ceasefire while we investigate?"

"Assuming it's true. I'd like to hear the evidence myself. From the beginning, and with as much detail as you can manage if you can."

>What say?
>>
>>24566204

>>
>>24566204
The name Kiritsugu bothers you bazette? I only learned of my fathers history a few days ago - don't worry I'm *nothing* like him. Relax.

Start at the beginning I guess, explain there's more servants than there should be, one from the last war is still kicking around, he was responsible for the vampire that attacked you, that we killed before a pissed off arcruied showed up, etc.
>>
>>24566204
>>24566228
So.. the war being 50 years early, the last one ending in an explosion, Zouken saying it's not the grail he made, and his comments on the last grail shards being inert and useless. Avenger and Gil, so we have 9 servants. True Assassin replacing Fake Assassin. Broserker is probably dead but hasn't entered the grail.
Grail is probably a sentient hate engine, not a wish-granting device. Was there anything else we had?

Pretty much resolved at this point. Vamp's dead an Arc's gone home.
Unless there's more vamps about, for which we don't have evidence, it won't help sway Bazett to bring it up.
Ask about what they know of the Runes while we're at it.
Oh, and slide in asking who betrayed her at the start of the war?

"Well, I suggest you preemptively order another drink, because this is going to take a while."

-War starting 50 years early
-Last war ended with a Master ordering his Servant to nuke the Grail, possibly due to the Sentient Hate Engine theory.
-Zouken saying that something is funky. As untrustworthy as he is, he still helped BUILD the damn thing.
-Avenger and Gilgamesh running around, setting up mystery runes and kidnapping vampires.
-Broserker apparently being dead, but the Grail vessel herself swears up and down he hasn't returned to the Grail.

Ask her if she can craft a quick gaes that allows to only state things that we believe to be true to her for the next hour or so. Acknowledge that there is potential for our knowledge of things to be flawed - but at least she'll have it on geas that we're not lying.

then go with prettymuch everything that >>24566370 is saying - also state that our servant fought in the last war, recognizes the previous archer and was commanded to destroy the grail by our father (and state that it's speculation but due to theory that our father realized the thing was made of hate).
>>
>>24566204
1. At the end of the last War, Kiritsugu used a Command Seal to order his Servant to destroy the Grail, despite showing a desire to get the Grail up until that point. He must have had a reason.
2. The Archer from the last War, whose identity is Gilgamesh, the King of Heroes, is still around. We don't know how this is possible, but he was apparently close to the Grail when Kiritsugu ordered it to be destroyed. We don't know if he has a master, but he is working with Avenger at this point. He is apparently motivated by a desire to make Saber his wife. Saber, obviously, wants very much for this not to happen ever.
3. Avenger. Oh holy jesus fuck Avenger. As far as we know, he's a Servant with no Master, can create shadowy copies of other Servants, and can survive an exploding Gae Bolg to the face. We have no idea where the fuck he came from, but he's doing SOMETHING with the Grail.
4. Zouken said something's funky with the Grail; at the end of the last War he went looking for the fragments, but they were all inert. We have no idea what this means. But he helped build the damn thing so if HE'S worried about it then it must be important.
Unfortunately he decided to piss off Kirei, who is planning on murderizing him... right about now, actually. We're not sure he'll be successful considering Zouken ALSO survived a Gae Bolg to the face.
5. Ilya said something's funky with the Grail; Berserker cut his contract with her, and should have run out of prana and faded away by now, but hasn't returned to the Vessel like he should have.
6. Caster said something's funky with the Grail; she can't sense its energies at any of the possible summoning points. Or something.
7. Arcrueid was in town, said she sensed a vampire. We killed a vampire. It was pretty fucking weak, all things considered, so we're not entirely sure it was the same vampire. We have Arc's number so we can call her up if we spot another one.
>>

"..... Arcueid? Arcueid Brunestud?" She asks with a tiny squeak before clearing her throat and recomposing herself. "Very well Mr. Emiya, I believe you've made a rather solid case for why I should allow the peace to continue such as it has."

"His.... Teacher? Mother?" Lancer begins, looking at me.

"Taiga?" I ask "Sister would probably be the most accurate."

"Right. Well, basically he's not the sort of person to accuse a lie unless he has not just the evidence to take you to court but convict you."

"I see. Well then, we should formalize the alliance now that we've agreed to maintaining it."

".... That's it?"

"That's all I desired from this conversation, other than speaking the terms of the truce."

"Lancer mentioned something about how you were rather justifiably paranoid about the war. I would be willing to sign a Geas of mutual protection like I did with Caster? Not attempting to harm or allowing any of our respective allies to harm either of us. Violation leads to the violators Magic circuits sealed until either death or the other party choses to forgive."

"... Why the clause for forgiveness? Wouldn't that make it more tempting to try and harm with less permanent results?"

"Sealing the magic system is a pretty dramatic step." I respond calmly. "What if something occurs like someone puts a gun to my friend's head and makes them chose between them and you? Or if you were placed in a similar situation as me? Permanently crippling someone over a decision made while being blackmailed might seem a bit... drastic. And that's only one hypothetical I'm thinking of off the top of my head."

"... Very well. I'll begin crafting the Geas right now." She hesitates. "Unless you had something to add?"

>?
>>
>>24566540
We don't. And he is. Archer killed what we knew as Assassin as far as we know, and TA just turned up after that.

>>24566272
"Yeah, I'm the son of the guy who did absolutely everything in his power to get his hands on the Grail. I would like us to stop fighting because it's a sentient Hate engine."
Or
"Yeah, I knew Kerry. He was a big softie. I'm nothing like him. I just want to start a harem and make everyone happy."
Which one sounds like a better position to negotiate a cease fire from?

Also, we should throw in questions on runes.
Arc shouldn't be a surprise at all to Bazett, guys. Remember, she's Lancer's master. Lancer's been with us pretty much the whole time. I don't think he'd leave that little detail out.
>>
>>24566597
"You know anything about runes? We found some around town and we're pretty sure Avenger put them there, but we can't figure out what they do without activating them."
>>
>>24566597
So Lancer, what do you want to do for the double date now?
>>
>>24566597
"Avenger has beep scribbling Runes all over town, but for the life of me I can't figure out what they're actually supposed to DO. After we're done here, mind if I show you one so I can get a second opinion?"
>>
>>24566597

"There's also someone being coerced into serving as Avenger's and Gilgamesh' minion wearing a bracelet inscribed with runes. He's relatively harmless, but we know it relays to Avenger his position. We don't know if it is capable of doing anything else."

Didn't we take a picture of that in the phone? Show it to her for a cursory assessment.
>>
>>24566615
Just no. The responses seem both unnecessary and out of context or even character to me.
Lancer could have called Arc "some vampire hunter" or "another hot chick."

>>24566597
>"Unless you had something to add?"
Runes are a good topic, but can wait until geas is signed, methinks.
>>
>>24566719
They weren't supposed to be actual responses. I'm countering the guy that thinks correcting her train of thought that we might be like Dad is a good idea.
Letting her assume we're an in-to-win badass that wants to be friends would be a stronger negotiating platform than a little kid who just happened to know Kerry and wants to start a love den.
Moot point now, we've already finished negotiations.
>>
>>24566701
This is a good point, as well as Avengers runes around town then just get to know her own goals.

"Yes, Lancer mentioned the runes. I would have to examine them in person before I could guess." She frowns. "My training was similar to his in that regard though. If he had no clues I'm not sure I'll fare better, but I'll certainly try." She hesitates, mumbling something about a double edged sword before continuing. "A hostage turned minion? I'm guessing you know it isn't a Stockholm case?"

"Definitely not."

"Mmmmm. Well, I'm not sure what to do about that. He's currently an enemy asset even if he dislikes his position in things." She takes a sip of her tea as she slides a neatly written paper... in English. "Sign on the dotted line please."

After all she may be from Britain, but if her knowledge wasn't augmented she wouldn't speak or read anything even CLOSE to modern English, considering how long ago she lived. Although watching her try to puzzle out modern English while only knowing Ye Olde English would be somewhat hilarious.
>>
>>24567159
This.
>>
>>24567232
Or maybe the Grail Magic just translates everything she reads into ye olde English.

As such, it would be hilarious if she read it aloud.
>>
"Saber?" I ask passing the paper to her. She nods and reads it, catching my meaning.

"You can't read English?"

"Not well enough to trust a magically binding legal document." I hesitate, scratching my head. "Actually, not well at all if I'm completely honest."

"My apologies, the thought hadn't occurred to me."

"Wait, wasn't that Taiga woman your English teacher?"

".... Yes."

"And she's-"

"Please stop. I already get enough of this at home." I respond with a weary sigh as I pinch the bridge of my nose. Saber slides the document back to me with a nod, confirming that she's on the level. I sign it immediately and pass it back, where she scrawls her own signature on the paper before burning it.

"And we're done. As much as I would love to stay and chat, we do have other pressing business to attend to."

"You want me to show you to where some of the runes are?"

"No need." She answers as she stands up. "Lancer already has the locations memorized."

As they begin to walk out of the resturant, I look over and see that saber's Tofu has barely been touched. "Saber? Are you alright?"

She returns a nervous smile back to me, obviously worried. "I'm really hungry, but the Tofu tastes like pain. Why would you do that to food? You can make food tasty and they make it hurt? Why Shirou?" Her expression is like a child being told Santa isn't real. "They can make food that isn't terrible in this era, and they make the food terrible in a different way?"

I try to think of the best way to.... explain to Saber as the Waiter leaves the check on the way by.

Cool. Now we get a fresh start for Saber's Big City Food Adventure!

On a completely unrelated note: we need to tell Rider to keep an ear on Rin and Sakura's girl gossip. We REALLY don't need to randomly come home to a dramapocalypse if they start talking about us, realize we're not exactly sticking to one woman, and misunderstand the situation and think we're cheating on them.
>>
>>24567454

We didn't exactly do anything to Sakura in the kitchen.

Rider won't talk until the plan is a go and do you really think Rin is the type to break her sister's heart like that? After what she said when Shirou was cradling her just before we dropped her on the bed?

"Because some people just want to watch the world burn. Come on, let's go and try something else."

[X] Food Date

But box the Mapo Tofu up and deposit it with Kirei. It'll be a 'Congratulations on Killing Zoken and getting your Church Back' gift. Shirou doesn't waste food.

Also, while I support a blushing Saber response, I highly doubt she's inbuilt with the 'he ate it off my face / doesn't mind my germs' Japanese reaction. She'd more than likely ask why we didn't order the same thing if we wanted some, or ask why Shirou just did that.

What one culture considers cute, another finds disgusting.

Get her a cake. Bitches love cake.
>>
>>24567478
You're probably right, but every now and then you get that perfect storm of a little indiscretion here, a little misunderstanding there, a slip of the tongue, and next thing you know the entire plan is out in the open and everything is going to hell in a handbasket. Never hurts to have a damage control procedure in place in case the "totally safe" nuclear reactor goes into meltdown.

>"I'm really hungry, but the Tofu tastes like pain. Why would you do that to food? You can make food tasty and they make it hurt? Why Shirou?" Her expression is like a child being told Santa isn't real.

And now we know why Kirei liked the tofu here. Not for himself but for others.

As much as I personally love insanely spicy mapo tofu, there really isn't any good answer to her question, so just squeeze her hand and offer to take her someplace else.

Fun is fun: Move along if ours is to eldritch for you.

To be fair, you'd have to ask either Grail-kun or Kirei. AC-Guy just took up the quest after it was abandoned because he was pissed they got us all excited and then left.

It's not like he could really up and go 'several years and continents distant' mid-plot. Besides, he's mentioned in passing having ideas for possible followup stuff that goes in new and interesting directions.

Plus, old concepts can be fun if played with in a new way and I think that between /tg/'s madness and AC-Guy's creative skill we've gone into completely unexplored waters by now.

Archive divers! Was the precious chain going to be delivered to us or the store? And has it been long enough
>>
>>24580041

Well, the first known instance of needing the timing chain was back in 26th verse, if I'm not mistaken.

>After calling the parts store, they tell me they can have all the parts delivered by the day after tomorrow.

From then. I don't know how that translates into in-game days though. I just divide it into breakfast, lunch, dinner, sleep and whatever in between.
>>
>>24580041
After a few minutes, I have a list of most of the parts needed to fix the bike. After checking the catalog, there's only one part I can't afford: some sort of timing chain. Luckily, it's fairly cheap after I get all the other things, and seems like it would be comparatively easy to install. After calling the parts store, they tell me they can have all the parts delivered by the day after tomorrow.
That was the 10th day, today is the 11th day. So it should be delivered tomorrow.
So, about 10-15 threads from now.

We make our way to a table off to the side to avoid making a specticle, and Saber begins devouring the food.

It's an.... interesting sight. I knew that she was something of a heavy eater, but I've never seen her take a pile of food in one go like this, normally it's one small portion at a time. I'm barely avoiding being transfixed entirely by watching her neatly and efficiently consume a pile of food roughly the size of her torso.

"S-so Saber..."

"Yes Shirou?" She asks cheerfully, clearly glad to have a real meal instead being 'mocked' as she commented on the other restaurant as we sat down.

"Since we're here together, I thought I'd ask you about-"

"-The bike."

"Which one?" She asks between bikes. "The one you gave to Rider?"

"The one I-" I pause. "What?"

"She was talking about how once it was all fixed up it was all hers."

"... Really now."

"... Maybe we're thinking of different bikes? She was talking about breaking one in, a 'different model'. She wanted my help with that for some reason." She hesitates. "... I suppose it makes a measure of sense, I'm the only other Servant with a Riding skill...."

".... Can you elaborate a bit more?"

"In truth, there wasn't much more to it than that. Just something about how you might not be willing and she might have to blackmail you into it."

".... Did you consider she might not be talking about riding bikes?"

"Eh?" She looks up from what looks like a small bowl of curry. "What on earth else could she be talking about?"

"You know what, never mind." I answer with a long sigh.

"Mmmm...." Saber purrs, somewhere between an expression of curiosity and a sound of delight. "These things are quite... delicious. If sweet."

"The Churros?"

"Is that what it is?"

"Yeah, it's a pastry thing. I think it was from Spain originally."

"Ah." She looks at her tray. "What else is here?"

"Well that's Currey."

"It was spicy, but not painfully so. I think you would enjoy it more than the food from that restaurant."

"I don't like spicy food at all." I respond easily.

"Really?" She looks at the bowl. "Well, where's Curry from? I don't remember anything like this...."

"I think India originally, but it's been all over Asia for a long time now." I shrug. "The one you're having is pretty heavily localized though."

"So there are other kinds of curry?"

"Pretty much every region or country has their own version. In some places where it's particularly popular they have recipes that vary from house to house."
>>
>>24582088

Saber's transfixed, asking more questions as she continues to sample different kinds of food. "Such variety.... I wish we had things like this back in my age. The food was miserable, we often didn't even have plates."

"Well, I suppose that after we mapped everything in the world we had to find something new to explore. I mean, we've even put people on the moon-"

"On the moon? You jest."

"No really, the Americans did it.... Something like forty years ago."

"... the Moon? Really Shirou? The one up in the sky?"

"Yeah."

"What did they find!?"

"... Not much really. I mean, there was some interesting scientific stuff I guess, but nothing like a race of moon people or something."

Saber looks almost disappointed. "I don't know why I'm surprised, Merlin already said it was going to be a disappointment. Something about how knowing something robs the magic of it."

"What, like a stage magician?" I ask.

"Something like that." She sighs, looking at me. "That was something that irritated me, almost as much as anything."

"What?"

"He never lied. He never properly explained anything, but he always spoke the truth, even if it wasn't the whole truth." She shakes her head. "enough about him though, what is that you're eating?"

"Uh... a cheeseburger. I'm pretty sure it was an American thing. It's.... it's basically just a kind of sandwich."

We spend a few more minutes on the improvised show and tell. she seems slightly less enthused though. Perhaps it's the Merlin thing?

Sure, they say this, but that's bullshit. We strapped a rocket onto a metal can and made it shoot itself into outer space. No magic, just math. How is that not fucking amazing?

"So Saber, did you ever get a look at the Children?"

"...Children?" She asks through a mouthful of noodles.

"Yeah, you know.... Our children."

Saber's eyes go wide as she attempts to yell out some form of objection mid-swallow. She ends up choking and coughing violently for a few moments. When we get her past her fit... "WHAT."

"You remember, Rin's tracking spell?"

She stares at me for a moment before it dawns on her. "Oh. OH.... Why did you have to say it like that?"

".... I didn't think you'd react that way for one." I respond awkwardly. "I was just kinda... disappointed."

"In what?"

"Well apparently curiosity got the better of some of- well most of- our housemates when they discovered that spell."

"...?"

"As in they cast it repeatedly with my blood mixed with the other girls."

Saber blinks heavily ".... Well that's.... interesting."

"Yeah. I was just disappointed because out of all the hypothetical children I apparently fathered I never got to see one of them."

"Really?"

"By the time I found out about it, a consensus on how it was stupid and silly had been reached and I didn't want to press the issue. I was honestly terrified of giving the wrong impression."

Saber looks at me as she wipes the small mess of her face, regaining her usual poise. She smiles and places a hand on mine. "Well if it makes you feel better, I never saw them either."

"Really?"

"Really. When Rin told me the effects I wrote it off as not what we were looking for and didn't investigate further. This is all rather news to me."

"... You weren't curious at all?"

".... It's not like that. I just saw it as an unimportant detail. I didn't see the value in distracting and indulging a curiosity. If anything all I would do is look at a future that could never be."

"Exactly. Even if we did... she trails off slightly before sighing. "It takes several months to carry a child to term, Even if by some miracle we found a way around that... I wouldn't be here for any of it. I couldn't know them. I can't stay after the War's over."

"Because that would mean giving up your wish?"

"Even without that." She shakes her head. "It's not a question of 'want', or rather, the question of 'want' is irrelevant."

She finishes off the last of her food and rises, as I do. "What you want is irrelevant? Is this one of those duty things?"

".... No, it's not that at all actually. Even then.... It's somewhat complicated, but my reasons for willingly entering the war make it impossible for me to refuse the call. When this is over, win or lose, I have to leave. The only alternative is for the war to continue forever, which is reckless and irresponsible. Who knows what sort of consequences having the grail active for a long time could have?"

I'm quiet, knowing she's right.

Shirou summons 4 Sabers; 3 different Arturias, and one Nero. Angry Manjew is displeased with this and throws in more Masters, and everyone gets at least 2 servants.

Because our Shirou would notice by now.
>>
"Alright, I'm confused by something."

"And that is?"

"You."

Saber hesitates, and turns towards me shocked. "W-what do you mean?"

"I have no reason not to trust you, but some things don't make any sense. You can remember the last war, which is apparently impossible. You can't do the fading ghost thing at all, and a lot of other minor inconsistencies. Not with anything you've said, with how servants are supposed to work."

".... I'm not sure I understand."

"You're clearly a Servant, I was there when you were summoned. Something about you is different though. I might know what, but I was wondering if you had a guess."

Saber looks at me, and then looks away thoughtfully. ".... I think I know. I never died."

My heart skips a beat. I suspected, but....

"That's how I know I can't stay. Whether I get my wish or reject the deal I made to compete for it, I need to return to that battlefield to live out my last moments. If I want to keep fighting and fail, I'll just be summoned again into a later war until I do one or the other."

"So when you say you can't stay..."

"I literally can't stay." She hesitates. "Something I learned from Merlin.... apparently your Fate can change as long as you don't see it happening. You can look at other people's futures without care, but not your own." She smiles sadly. "And I know how my story ends."

"Saber...."

"Come on, you're the one who said we should be making the most of the time we have, right?" She shakes her head. "Instead of worrying about things we can't change let's just do what we can while we have this. There's much here that I might lose forever in the next few days, so I may as well take advantage. So Shirou...."

"Yes. It was... more fun than I thought it would be."

"Fun seems to be the order of the day here." I respond, pulling her into an arcade.

"What is this?"

"This is a place where people come to play games to test their skill and win prizes. You know how they had tournaments for knights back in the day? With the jousting and stuff?"

"Yes."

"It's like that, but more casual and always happening. There's still the fabulous prizes though." I tell her, pointing to the rack behind the counter where a girl only slightly older than me is standing.

".... I see."

".... So that's basically the choices we have before us."

"I don't understand. I can see how the shooting game would work, and I can how the fighting and dancing things would work.... The ball thing is odd but it's about accuracy..." She frowns, looking at me thoughtfully. "Shirou? How is dating supposed to be a game?"

"Well, it's like a short thing. Like getting coffee. It's a controlled fast thing with a randomly selected girl that would tell you how good you did. Probably along the lines how likely she would agree to a future date."

"... That's strange."

"I've never played one, I just heard about them." I shrug. "Do you want to check it out?"

"I suppose." Saber says, walking over to the machine and sitting in front of it. She then looks at me, confused. "Aren't you going to play?"

".... I guess? I have no idea what I'm doing though." I sit at the one next to her and we put a couple quarters in.

".... Shirou? I'm talking to a woman?"

"Huh?" I think about it. "Yeah, maybe these games aren't that popular with girls or something?"

"... How am I supposed to talk to a woman like a date?"

".... You're a woman who spent your entire life pretending to be a man..... and you don't know how to talk to women."

"... Can you play?"

"... Two at once?!" I look between her screen and mine. "I've never done this at all and you want me to do two at once?!?"

I sit down, calmly throwing out a middle of the line compliment to both of them, one of them gives a slight blush, the other reacts... violently in comparison.

"Oh, so she's like Rin."

"What was that?" Saber asks, glancing my way.

"I was clearing my throat." I respond calmly, slapping my way through the next few dialogue choices. After a while I start picking the options in advance, letting the game catch up to me.

"Shirou?" Saber ask, looking at me. "How are you this good?"

"Well....." I hesitate. "Honestly, I don't know. It's not like I've never dealt with women before, but I'm relatively inexperienced on the whole as far as the whole 'romance' thing."

"... I see. So why...?"

"I'm guessing the fact that I'm attentive combined with the fact that real women are considerably more complicated than this."

"..... Really? It seems complicated enough."

"It kinda is, but here they're writing for a character. If I know a certain character archtype will react a certain way, I can plan my next move in advance. With real people it's more complicated: If someone really looked up to their father and then met someone who reminded them of him after he passes away, would they like him because of the similarities or dislike him because it reminds them of their loss?" I look at her. "That's just one of a million possible factors. Even if you could program that kind of complexity into a game, you would still have to write forgone conclusions into a setup where you get to pick the 'best' of five different options like this."

".... Huh. So that's why?"
>>
>>24584586

"It's a numbers game. You just grab what looks like the most optimal response from the list based off what you know and watch the points pile up."

"... That's a rather... cold way of looking at it."

"Given my complex personal life, I'm genuinely uncomfortable seducing other women. Even if it's just a game of pretend."

I note the high scores on the board and how I've more than doubled both of them. "That's...." Saber trails off.

"Yeah. Apparently I'm better at this than current evidence suggests." I respond uncomfortably as Saber watches me input the high scores. My initials go at the top of the list, right above 'STR' 'MNW' and 'DK-'.

Suddenly, behind us, we hear a voice than manages to be both cheerful and mocking at once. "Mongrels."

Saber and I share a glance out of the corner of our eyes and spicn together to see.... Lancer, with a huge grin on his face.

"... What?" I ask, looking at him.

"I wanted to practice my hunting and tracking skills. First I tracked you down by asking which way the cute foreign girl who can out-eat a rugby team went-" I see Saber blush slightly "- then I decided to study your reactions by imitating the mating call of your natural predator: The Greater Mesopotamian Douchebag." He puts a hand on a hip as we stare at him. "Seriously though, I was just walking by and happened to see you."

".... Alright. anything you wanted from us while you're here?" Saber asks diplomatically.

"Well, my Master wanted to tell you that the rune was some sort of independent trigger effect, and apparently the levels of ambient Mana varied from mark to mark. At least for the ones we investigated before I took her back to the Hotel."

"I see." I respond. "Anything else?"

"Not really. I have other business and so I'm just gonna let the two of you get back to your date."

Man, you're not very good at figuring out Worst Cases.

WORST case is he took out Zouken just fine, used leftover command seals to contract Assassin, uses the explosives we left in Kiritsugu's storage unit (Archer mentioned seeing him by the docks numerous times with no apparent reason to be there; just saw on the news that a storage facility got trashed down by the docks) to blow the Fuyuki leylines to enact the "evil alternative plan" alluded to by Gil to power the grail by just strip mining for soul juice, locates the grail and goes full REJOICE-mode.

And here we are, twiddling our thumbs and debating bring him leftovers of his favorite lunch despite such subtle hints as Kiritsugu's notes telling us HEY, NEVER TRUST THAT PRIEST GUY.
