No news today, at least nothing worth reporting. Internet's been kind of funky lately, don't think it'll be an issue, but it's just something to keep in mind. that and I'll need to pause for food at some point today, haha.

Archives here: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Strike%20witches%201989

and for the people who can't be arsed with those, since they are getting slightly huge and unwieldy, there's the character page here: http://pastebin.com/zFxWNup1

that'll actually give you a pretty good jumping off point if you're interested.

++

The team from Chance-Vought are certainly happy to see you, it seems like. They've all wanted to shake your hand, and most of them have commented on the 'amazing' flight data recordings from your few scraps in Japan. You've done your best to give Merlin a lot of the credit- if it wasn't for her, you'd be just another pilot, after all. Of course, She's been rather insistent that it was all you when they approached her about it, and that she just made sure the plane stayed in one piece while you did it.

Of course, you've also been doing your best to downplay everything because... well, because. These guys are civilians, and while you haven't seen a reporter yet, you're almost positive that's more because it's probably not well-known where your squadron is at any given point in time. Today, you, Merlin, Ice, and Slider are with the tech crews from Chance-Vought, and Maverick and Goose are supposed to show up soon, along with the Twins. While this is your fighter- the crew has made sure to point out that it's been improved almost exclusively with the data from your flight recordings- the twins will certainly be interested in the new features to be installed on their bird, and besides, you're half-convinced they're coming down specifically to cause havoc, chaos, and mayhem. Kind of a specialty of theirs, really.

1/2
>>
The ferry crew weren't that talkative, and, according to them, didn't notice anything majorly different, though they did say the new imaging and sensors took some 'getting used to', and that high-altitude supercruise was a lot smoother now with the wing transition worked out. They pointed out that the engines seemed strange, and that you might want to look at them before you took her up on a first flight.

Other than that, though, they didn't say anything, and the technical crew isn't going to give you the straight story right now- there's more than a little brass here, after all. Nixon's not here yet, so you've been letting Ice field most of the questions- she is you commanding officer, after all.

Part of it makes you thankful the old die hard sexist attitudes died off back in your mom's day. According to her, back then, flag officers typically just thought of witches as little girls playing at war. These days, that kind of attitude is almost unheard of- somewhere along the line, people started realizing that witches were typically sent to the hottest areas, and so they might just know a few things about fighting.

2/3
>>
It probably also doesn't hurt that Ice and Slider both have scores higher than yours- by far. Most of the witches do, not including the twins- fact is, the last two fights with Konstantina put you far behind. You could always hope to run into a mass bombing raid or something, but it seems pretty unlikely.

So far, both you and Merlin are flying beneath the radar here. Ice looks like she could use a bit of help dealing with the brass, there's quite a few of them, afterall. Then again, your new bird's got a lot of new features, some of which you'd like to see up close and personal-like. Slider's over by the stands with the new Strikers- two pairs, so far, with the rest inbound. She's been going over them pretty well, so if you want to get the jump on what the girls can and can't do, she'd be the one to ask.

[] Go assist Ice with the Brass! She knows how to deal with them, but there's too many right now, and she could use the hand!
[] Go poke around the bird! One of the tech is sure to see you and start bragging about it!
[] Go bother Slider! You're going to need to know what your squadronmates can do, after all.

[x] Go poke around the bird! One of the tech is sure to see you and start bragging about it!

While you mull over the idea of going to help out Ice, she's got it well enough in hand that you don't really feel like you need to bother. The brass don't honestly sound like they're hounding her, just chatting, though there's an awful damn lot of them, either way.

You make your way towards the new aircraft, taking time to walk around it slowly, letting your practiced eye wander over the bird's sleek lines. The nose is changed drastically- the guns have been moved a bit, making way for several of those hexagonal plates for the imaging system. The engine's thrust vectoring looks different- instead of the relatively normal looking 3-d nozzles, these look more like NASA's test aircraft nozzles.

The pair of differing length booms outboard of the engines are also new- as well as the pair of pods mounted on the tailfins. Hexagonal plates reveal their nature- more of the 360 coverage for the sensors.

“She's a beaut, isn't she?” One of the factory team guys says, offering you a can of coke. “We had this one in the works almost as soon as you left Japan. Built her off one of the spare airframes we had.”

He chuckles. “Pulled almost a solid week with three separate fabrication crews working around the clock.”

[x] “You'll have to explain some of this to me. There's some changes here I'm not understanding.”

You accept the can of coke and hand it to Merlin, who takes it happily.

You motion at the exhaust petals and the tail booms. “You'll have to explain some of this to me, there's some changes I'm not getting.”

The tech smiles. “Oh, right, right. Well, the tail booms are new. The one on the left there-” he points to the longer one “Houses your aft hemisphere laser imaging system. That's tied into the rest of the sensors for your helmet mounted images. The one on the right houses part of your ECM suite, the rear mounted emitters.”

“Three sixty ECM coverage?” Merlin asks, and the tech nods.

“Mhmm. There's four major emitters- nose, this one here on the tail, and one on either wing, right near the joint. In theory, you can run them at a high enough setting to cook a small bird.” He shrugs. “We haven't tested that.”

“What about the computers?” Merlin asks from beside you.

“there's three more- your flight imagery computer, that handles all the sensor data incoming and builds the picture you actually see, the witch suite that handles... well, all the witchery, I gues.” He shrugs again, and motions to the cockpit. “The front seat is pretty standard, really. Well, ok, not standard, but nothing too strange. The backseat is a lot of stuff from the R&D department at the air force academy.”

“And the third?” You ask.

The tech smiles. “The centerpiece of the whole system. The Naval combat networking computer. We call it nick.”

No, Feet is a universal aviation standard for height, and terminology is pretty damn standardised internationally.

Since the Yanks are too stubborn to get with modern measurements, it's necessary to have a standard so as to avoid catastrophic misunderstandings in international flights.

[] Naval... what?

“Naval...what?” You ask, scowling. “I think Merlin told me a little about it, it lets us share targeting data with the rest of the squadron, right?”

The tech nods, and motions to the bird with his own can of coke. “Yeah, but it does a lot more as well. The idea is, anything fitted with this can share targeting data with anything else. In theory, it'd allow an infantryman or a tank, for example, to designate a target with their own networked gear, then you to attack it without ever coming within your own sensor's range.”

“Neat.” You respond.

He nods again. “But it also allows other network elements to use weapons without any input from you. Basically, your squadron commander over there could achieve a missile lock and launch a missile from your aircraft without you ever having any input in the chain of events.”

You frown. “So they can use all my ordinance without my say-so?”

1/2
>>
He shakes his head. “No, no. Not quite. Your RIO has to free the weapons for network use, allowing you some control over what happens.” He pauses. “We don't really envision the wyvern as the missile truck for a unit- there's other things coming down the pipe for that role. But it does give the witches some extra punch- their new strikers have the w-nick.”

“The witchnick?” Merlin asks.

The tech nods. “Yeah, witchnick. Same concept, though they lose some of the functionality of the full scale system. The whole thing is designed to run from a ship- like a carrier, say, or a battlewagon- but there's land and air based network hubs as well.” He pats the flank of the wyvern. “This can act as a smaller hub for the squadron's network, but that's about all it can do for now.”

“Well, what do you think son?” says someone else from behind you. “You think you could take this bird up and show us what she can do?”

[] Honestly sir, I'm not the one to ask. If the Chance-Vought guys think it's alright though, then yeah.

You look at the aircraft, then turn around to face the officer behind you. You're not sure who he is, but he's about medium height with an impressive moustache and a pipe.

“Honestly sir, I'm not the one to ask,” you respond, saluting and accepting the offered handshake. “But if the Chance-Vought guys think it's alright, then I'd love to.”

“Well, how about it Mills?” the admiral asks, looking at the tech next to you. “Can Nixon's wonderteam here take your bird up?”

He nods. “It wouldn't be a problem, admiral. We'll just have to get them outfit and dialed in for the HMD, that's all. Give us... about an hour?”

“Outstanding.” The as-yet unnamed admiral responds. He nods at you and Mills, and walks away, back to the cluster around Ice and Slider, now.

“Well, Commander Bishop, what do you think? You ready?” Mills asks. “We've just got to calibrate the helmets for you two and give you a fast rundown on the new systems.” He chuckles.

“Honestly, you'll have it easier than your RIO. A lot of the systems in there were tailor made for her. It'll probably take her a bit of getting used to.”

Gotta show some confidence in her. How is she supposed to believe in the Fronk that believes in her, if we don't make it clear that we DO believe in her.

By the way, Nick means that if we need to, and are working with other stuff that has it, we can go full Macross on the Vampyr next time we see it. Unless the pilot is the Soviet equivalent of Shin Kudo (Zero sucked, but it had glorious Tomcat porn at the start of the first episode), he ain't dodgin' that shit in a normal fighter.

That's the thing, we've already seen that he's good and so is his plane, shit it almost outflew us while weaving amongst friendly naval support and other allied aircraft.

I still don't think that will give him the ability to out-dodge the setup we're getting, but if they send him in with Stalinka and her stealth abilities and good ECM, yeah, might not do shit.

No, wrong. SW is based on light novels.
So, in a way, running a bunch of quests on them is going full-circle.
>>
>>24693734
Yeah it's not known how much of the anime is based on the LNs and how much was Gonzo being GONZO!!!!!.
>>
>>24693734
The light novels are based on characters that don't show up in the animated show aside from a cameo. There's a lot of Manga as well including the Semi-Canon Witches of the Sphinx. Read the wiki for all of the media.

[ ] “What do you think, Merlin, can you tackle it?”

You turn to look at your RIO.

“Whatcha think, Merlin? Can you handle it?”

She nods. “Y-yeah. It won't be a problem Frank.” She says, sounding as confident as she ever does.

The three of you head into the life support shop, where you and Merlin change into your flight suits. Outside, Mills holds up a pair of odd looking vests.

“These are the Wyvern's survival and systems vests.” He says, handing one to each of you. “Long story short, there's some additional connectors in there for the aircraft's medical support systems- nothing major, it can administer painkillers and a few stimulants, that's about it. It's also got some improved ballistic armor- nothing big, but it should stop fragments pretty well.”

You nod, appreciative of that detail. You've still got the little glass vial of fibersteel they pulled out of you in the hospital, and you know there's still that stuff in your ribs too.

Next, he hands you both your helmets- new ones. Completely redesigned, they've got a wide crest running from front to back, with a mirrored, bulbous section in front of the eyes and hard sections over the nose and mouth. A pair of hexagonal ports at the back connect to wire leads on the vest, giving you plenty of room to move your head around.

1/2
>>
“The vest and helmet are one unit, as far as the imaging system is concerned.” Mills says. “Your vest has leads that'll hook up to your seat, which was the better way to handle it. Most of the vest connectors are out your right hand side.”

Reaching down, you find a thick bundle of cables wrapped around your oxygen line trailing from that side of the vest. Mills nods.

“Yep, that's it. That'll hook to the port on your seat, which has a limited internal supply if you have to, uh you know.” He pantomimes closing his eyes and going for an ejection handle.

You notice the helmet doesn't weigh that much more than your previous ones, which is nice- though you also notice that the pair you and Merlin have lack anything other than a matte black paint coat- totally unacceptable.

“Oh, uh, one last thing.” Mills says, as you exit the life support shop. He looks at Merlin. “This plane has striker-type connectors. You can fold them up and out of the way, they'll rotate into the sidewalls of the cockpit, but you can use them if you want, just...” He seems like he doesn't want to finish.

You can practically feel the blush coming off Merlin, even from under her helmet.

“I'm not corrupt.” You say, feigning hurt.

“Corrupted. Lewd.” Ice says. “Leeewwwwwd.”

You nod, grinning beneath your mask. “I'll accept it for now.” you hold up a finger. “But that's based on more evidence!”

Ice chuckles, headed into the witch half of the life support shop, followed by a female tech.

Merlin's back in record time, your jacket tied around her waist by the arms. It's far from a perfect solution, but it covers her legs down to her ankles, fitting her almost like a dress anyway. She smiles up at you. “Ok, ready!”

Getting into the aircraft takes a bit of adjusting. The 'canopy', such as it is, is solid, and your ejection seat sits on rails that slide up and out of a hatch. You're told that, if you have to eject, the entire canopy section will blow off, allowing your seat to get well clear, and even if that fails, the hatch will still give you plenty of clearance.

Honestly, you're not sure why they seem so set on assuring you you can get out of the aircraft if it's going down. When have you ever done that before?

Inside the cockpit, it takes you a few tries to find the vest port, while behind you, there's a bit of shuffling as Merlin gets used to the new fit of the cockpit- and a muted squeak when she puts her legs in the new interface for the first time.

You chuckle. “Bit different?”

“Y-yes.” She says. “I-it's incredible Frank. I wonder if this is what a real witch feels like?”

A witch could never be this awesome.

So let me just make sure I'm getting this right. This plane has two holes that works like the strikers, but are used for Merlina specific things?

yeah, that's what I got out of it. I want to see what she can do with it - for god's sake, she put up a shield in that f14, and I'm pretty sure shield focuses don't come standard on those.

[] Combo answer!

“What have we said about that, Merlin? First, you are a real witch, and second, no, since they're not anywhere near as awesome.” You say, letting your eyes adjust to the darkened interior of your jet as the cockpit hatch closes.

“Y-yeah.” Merlin says. “This is incredible Frank.”

You have to agree as the imaging system comes online. You see the hangar in perfect clarity, including below and behind you... almost like you imagine strikers to be, actually. Looking at your panel shows you that your display will allow you to see it, though that may be a liability in combat, you think. Still, poor place to hide.

Behind you, the engines make an unusual, deeper-pitched whine as they being to spin up, and you finally let the grin that's been lurking beneath your mask break out in full.

“Board's green, Frank.” Merlin says, behind you. “We've got network with two pairs of strikers. Ice and Slider, I think.”

Your marshal waves you forward and you let off the brakes gently, rolling the jet forward under it's own power, relishing in the thrust generated even at the bottom throttle setting.

“Spellcaster, this is playboy ground. The airspace is yours.”

And that's it for the night guys!

Sorry again for the slow run- I've been kind of distracted lately, but got it sorted tonight. We should be back up to speed no problem next week.
