Old thread: >>24693685

Interactively creating a universe. Progress so far:

The current state of this universe exists after the Discopocalypse.

"Planet Earth. In 1972, 'The Groove,' a special type of lighter-than-air microorganism begins infecting the entirety of the Disco scene. <<insert plausible story about the keys getting turned and the world going into full nukewar because of a couple of infected guys and the influence it had on them, like a drug or some shit.>> The entire world goes in an instant. The Groove survived, but Humanity exists in a very limited form. Slowly, they are adapting to this new climate, though it will likely take thousands of years before they can build something vaguely resembling life before The Groove. The only human tribes are far inland, as hundreds of miles into the shore from all of the world's tropical and temperate oceans is coated in an impermeable fog of toxic gas, courtesy of mutant bacteria strains that have learned to survive on the oceans' salt.

The past few hundred years have seen the rebirth of ‘magic’, in the form of Auromancy. The Groove can be willed to move and shake in certain ways with the use of music. Alternately, because of the composition of the groove, they can be manipulated with magnetism. Conventional technologies are all but nonexistent."

Sentient species:

Humans - Small tribes consisting of members rarely older than 19 years, because of the effects of the radiation killing them. Forces breeding is common. Because of the high rates of infertility due to radiation, those who can breed become designated as breeders, just to fight the death rates.

<<Batpeople>> - Hoping cave life would keep them from dying from the excess of radiation, these people retreated into the darkness. They were still exposed, causing rapid adaptation among them, and have become blind. They navigate via echolocation. They do, still, have speech though.

<<Deaf people>> - A subspecies of humans who, via their aversion to music because of their knowledge of The Groove and flukes in the effects of radioactivity on them, can no longer hear. <<Method of nonvisual communication? Telepaths?>>
Fauna:

-Sloths that can photosynthesize
-Certain dog breeds have developed hyper thick skin to slough off some radiation, at the expense of some mobility.
-Land versions of crustaceans, having scuttled the fuck out of the oceans, having been aware of the coming biostorm.
-Ragemonkeys, who attack everything that is not like them. These are creatures you don’t want to come across.

necromancers/biomancers: can control the dead using The Groove, can fuse bodies/living organisms together to make chimeras.

Combat, or this settings equivalent of magic works by weaponizing the Groove around you
the groove reacts to musical sound patterns
different genres of music create different types of effects, tribes often have one preferred genre.
>>
Yellowbacks: The doctors of the time, use a weird mix of modern medicine, music, and local drugs to heal you up. While most they will fail at anything requiring brain surgery, they can heal other wounds almost instantly. By using the music to force The Groove to move throughout your body they find infection/cancer/viruses, and dissolve them with the groove. Can also sue this to heal wounds, dissolving the wounded are, and then reconstructing it as needed. Yellowbacks(should they survive) eventually become immortal, sustaining their bodies, by constantly cycleing the Groove through their own bodies, though doing causes a change in pigmentation, lending a yellowish tinge to their skin.

ah. Now I understand, yeah I could see that, sheet music too.
>>
The Fuzz/the Warmen/The Man: The remnants of the military & police force. They enforce order through out what remains of civilization. Like the yellow backs they circulate The Groove through their bodies, however, rather than use it to preserve themselves, they instead use it to improve aspects of their bodies. Some of them take down animals to copy certain aspects of the bodies onto their own, gaining the strenth of a Griza, or the bite of a Dahg. However in doing so they speed up their metabolism, and strain the body with parts it was not made for. Most don't live till 70.
>>
Synchro Priests: These radicals swear vows of silence upon taking their mantle as a priest, but are given a Tempo-Staff as a badge of office. (kinda like the thumpers from Dune) The Staff emits a deep mono-rhythmical beat, which has hypnotic/semi hallucinogenic effects on its listeners. When a group of "followers" gather around a priest, they stomp and clap and chant to the tempo of his staff.

New and interesting creatures have evolved to become depended on the Groove.

They produce organically evolved music, what they produce is not unlike slowed down techno music and blues.

SO Anybody go other ideas for the wild life? How about Break Dancers? Trees that over time have soaked up enough grove that if a beat is played near them they begin to dance eventually breaking apart, except for the supple Break soaked HEARtwood, which when cut down, can be shredded and made into strings. Instruments containing bits of this tree have a natural resonance with the Groove creating a sort of speaker effect around the instrument.

Far away from there in Buenos Aires the Groove is almost forced in the traditional patterns of the Tango. However many downtown performers say that the true nature of Tango has been lost with the institunonalization of rules. They prefer to express pure emotion throught Tango like their ancestors did. All in all, what you can say about the humans is that nearly all the settlements and most of the nomadic tribes are built around either potents auromancers or musician priests.

The nomadic groups are often the most recents genres : electronic music, disco, rock... They are mostly barbarians.

Edyt was a young Raven who was not the prettiest. All alone she lammented over herself, not understanding why life didn't like her. It was then that the Groove came to her revealing to her that singing was her destiny. From then onwards the voice of Pyaf echoed throught the ether as her songs made entire nations love her most notably Kanyada. She later married a white Crow, who was no other than the Groove Incarnate. Today a sight of a white Crow and a Black Raven seen together is considered divine and many Spell Beaters use their flight to determine the future.

After The Groove came, the old World broke down, it simply couldn't handle it's jive. One of the Greatest bastions of the old land was Las/Lost Vegas. With the collapse of the Old Rule, Elvis Presley was Crowned King of Vegas. However after 40 years of reign he died leaving one heir. His heir Louis Mark Presley LAter died himself after 20 years, leaving Lost Vegas without a ruler. From the Midwest rose the Six-String Samurai, though his real name has been lost through the ages the tales of his journey last to this day. Facing countless obstacles, saving an Orphan Deimos (who later went on to become his heir), facing an early faction of the Warmen, and finally cutting his way through his rivals, and the opposing royal class to take his kingdom. He is said to be the source from which today's Warmen base their abilities. Unfortunately his abilities, while of a class above Warmen, were self destructive in nature. After, reunifying Vegas, setting up the government which they use to this day, and reigning in peace for 25 years, he died, leaving the throne to Deimos, and his 12 other children.

So, expanding a bit on the opera :

The banshees are pure Groove chiselled by the echoes of opera. Technically, new banshees could appear nowadays, but sadly the overall quality of the singers is much, much lower than before the Discolocaust. That being said, there is still opera troops able to summon and bind some banshees to do their task, but they are really weak compared to old wild banshees.

It must be noted that a banshee can't be conjured by a single opera singer : a banshee summoning ritual has to be carried by a whole orchestra.

Banshees are shaped by their operas, and are mostly feminine. Thus, the most widespread banshees take the form of Valkyries, or femme fatales.

The Neuschwanstein and its surroundings has the highest number and most powerful banshees in the world. During the nuclear apocalypse, there was an opera being played, and now the Wagnerian echoes of the world's last Gesamtkunstwerk wander the lands around, knights and Valkyries protecting the castle and its treasures.

>>24710331

Unfortunately, I'm going to go with their first suggested name.
>>
>>24710238
The Free Bassons actually accompany the Charpenters music. They speek in a long dead language and the meaning of the lyrics has been lost long ago but the phonetic remains each generation of Bassons passing the chants to the next.

>>

Sounds great. I've been trying to leave this very much in all of your hands. It's enough work canonizing things.
>>
>>24710561
yeahh roll out your junk. also we need some classes based on country music.
>>
The BraveBoms- Use Bagpipes, which cause a delayed blast much like a grenade. They use mounts to get out of the area. The best of them have perfected their form to the point that they can stand in the middle of a blast and not beaffect, for they have build an explosion AROUND themselves.
>>
>>24710561
Look these up maybe they could be some kind of magician/paladin/cleric of the Truesong or something like that.
>>24708516

>>24710652

I was thinking of having the Truesong be mostly cultural, and having no obvious powers.

The Farmers?

Also

FIddlers: Have somehow figured out how to create fire using the Groove. They can send it out in waves, but if they work inc oncert then it will summon a devil. A construct created fromgenerations of fiddling which(like a banshee) can be contracted to a group of fiddlers.

They live mostly near the wetlands, on the inner edge of Georgia. They raise Boar, use them as mounts.

I'm more about generic classes there, maybe.

Voxes - In a world where music can be a weapon , the voice is a pretty good choice : you got your 2 arms free for more weapons ! From the rappers of Chicago to the Red army of the choirs, the hand-to-hand combat is fought with swords, maces, shields and powerful war songs made to protect their singers and give them strength.

Windtalkers :
The Groove can be used in many ways, and the wind blowing out of a wooden pipe isn't the weakest : flutes are the truly good instruments for those who want to manipulate nature. The Aboriginals of Australia use it to turn the red desert into a windy hot weapon, the flute players of Hamelin have mastered the art of having animals do what they are told to. After the apocalypse, the Zauberflöte has really become Zauber.

Chaff Beaters

A group of slaves from assorted people groups who formed when they defected from their masters. Their songs have the nature of keeping them working(Or fighting/running) an exceptionally long time, with an amalgamation of other songs buried in. The people are nomadic and allusive keeping the Groove away with their former work chants. They are known to get vengeance on slave keepers by killing crops and spoiling food with Groove.

First time I've ever tried to write anything for a setting, so there's that.

Contrabassists Crabs.

Descendants of fiddler crabs, they are monstrous crabs, sometimes the size of a car, with one oversized claw. They are sometimes seen far from the sea, near rivers or lakes.
>>
>>24711323
So Human Tribes, lets see. Up to now, we have french singers who retain lyrics, Brellers who are a slightly more chaotic version of the frenchies, The Shiners, who do bluegrass, the Sky Rocketers, who are led zeplin with wings, Fiddlers who are country guys, BraveBoms, who are scots, The Chamber and subordinates, the UNOMEs,Buenos Airesians, who do Tango, Moshkins, who are barbarians,Elvis-guys, who are well Elvis-guys, Hicks/The Ruraliers, farmers, Red Army Choirs, who are angry russians and russian angry anarchists and the Wild Ones, who are basically pygmees. What can we add now?

>>

Punk are probably more like metal, electronic music and disco, mainly songs for the wandering hordes a la Mad Max.
>>
>>24711527
>the Sky Rocketers, who are led zepplin with wings
I guess they won't need that stairway to heaven after all
>>
>>24711823
I would say they would use Combat drugs, for whoever makes them. There is so much drugs in Punk.
>>
>>24711823
The Rusters: constantly travelling, basically a mixture between Gypsies, and the hordes of madmax. They're called Rusters because they travel in ancient metal wagons pulled by their tamed Lizards beasts. The wagons are constantly breaking down and being patched up with new metal, but they use it anyways because it is traditional. They live off of selling metal. To mine land they use their music to send special shock waves through the earth that loosen, and bring up the right type of ore. Then they smelt it.
>>
>>24711920
Yes. Some throwaway ideas :

Metal and hard rock hordes are viking-like, totally drunk and berserk in battle, whereas punks use drugs to put themselves in condition.

Also, punk hordes actually tend to stay in the townships they conquer, while Rockers tend to pillage them then burn them.

Punks use often sabotage to break the civil order in towns before launching the attacks. They also use a lot of dogs.
>>
>>24711971

I was mostly looking for a way to keep metal in the setting. Plus it really gives a new depth to punk ROCK. Still, scavenging is good. But the baby thing should only be for the most Hardcore of their members. Able to mine even the tracest of element from the earth, but losing themselves further and further in the depravity for it.

>>24711971

For Metal, well, steel war wagons and mining song it is then. Don't forget a lot of black leather.

Well, we may clarify a bit about the hordes ?

- Rusters (metal) : typical mad max hordes, obsessed with steel and blood. Have warwagons.

- {Chemdogs} (punks) : travelling anarchists. They come, make riots, fuck your cities and squat your castle doing drugs, then leave.

- Moshkins (hard rock) : vikings from southern england.

>>
>>24712434
The Chemdog wastes of South Jersey, battered extra hard by the groove due to the mass of people in the area, Chemdogs need a constant supply of hard drugs and harder faster music. When they began to run out of supplies in the Jersey area they began a massive caravan packing up the majority of their mishmash society and taking it on the road. The leaders live on a massive mobile stage with pyrotechnic cannons, an armory and chemlab as well as the "backstage" where the only real control of the wild horde takes place. They take their "tour" from Jersey across to the Ohio river valley then south east and back up the East coast. Lately they have been branching out sending scouts further from the norms that they sack and pillage.
>>
>>24712657
Ravers primarily in the ruins of L.A. and spotted along the southern west coast attack the senses of others with bright lights, loud sounds and hypnotic trance beats. Primarily they cover themselves in neon and glowing clothes making them easy to spot as they approach. However where you seen one more will surely follow in their search for anything they can find to alter their states of mind to keep them entertained.

I don't have a good name for these, so feel free to make suggestions.

After the groovepocalypse, the combination of radiation and Groove created parasitic creatures akin to masses of hair. These creatures bond with humans, making their hosts more connected to the Groove, at the cost of their endurance in tasks where they cannot call upon the groove to supplement their energy. Some humans learned to use the power of the Groove to great effect in many ways, including dancing. These acrobatic "Mofros" are used as shock troops by many armies across the world.

They came from a failed cloning experiment attempting to grow hair for balding men. As the Discfros connect to their host they change mannerisms and speech, adding special slang only hosts understand, such as Groovy, Peace Out, etc etc
>>
It must be also pointed out that for the most part, nomad tribes/hordes are probably less human than any Orgyn.

Wightgyz:

A group of genetic anomalies who are unable to percieve or match the external Groove: The Groove within their bodies follows abnormal, discordant patterns: for this reason, the Wightgyz pigmentation is altered, leaving them with albinism. Furthermore, the strangeness of their Groove renders them effectively insane (to them, however, the rest of the world seems off beat).

By dancing in accordance with their internal groove, they can inflict their eldritch rhythms upon the outside world. Others nearby, if overexposed, may adopt the alien Groove's behavior as their own and become Wightgyz themselves. Furthermore, normal Groove magic begins to behave in very unnatural ways.

The Earworms: Occasionally a recursive loop will appear in the group, cause by the constant repetition of some form of sound. This can create something like a temporary Banshee. While it lasts however, it will spread like a plague appearing over and over again, for sometimes years at a time before dying out.

the gloon need factions too
the droning, the most conservative among the gloon who revile the surface as something bad. They tend to live much deeper under the ground and use continues droning music with heavy bass to see inside their base wich can be gigantic underground mazes with great halls and lots of automated music.
>>
>>24730791
the younger
a movement among newer generations that is less fundamentalist about staying clear of the surface, these are the ones that might actually go exploring and use other music styles than the droning dubsteb.
To the other surface dwellers they still seem paranoid and neurotic though, they fear a lot of things that other races use carelessly and don't like experimentation with the Groove. This might only be a sign of a larger understanding that Gloons have of the world.
