>Sorry I'm late.

Saber and I share a glance out of the corner of our eyes and spin together to see.... Lancer, with a huge grin on his face.

"... What?" I ask, looking at him.

"I wanted to practice my hunting and tracking skills. First I tracked you down by asking which way the cute foreign girl who can out-eat a rugby team went-" I see Saber blush slightly "- then I decided to study your reactions by imitating the mating call of your natural predator: The Greater Mesopotamian Douchebag." He puts a hand on a hip as we stare at him. "Seriously though, I was just walking by and happened to see you."

".... Alright. anything you wanted from us while you're here?" Saber asks diplomatically.

"Well, my Master wanted to tell you that the rune was some sort of independent trigger effect, and apparently the levels of ambient Mana varied from mark to mark. At least for the ones we investigated before I took her back to the Hotel."

"I see." I respond. "Anything else?"

"Not really. I have other business and so I'm just gonna let the two of you get back to your date." He turns on one heel and begins to move for the door. Saber hesitates like she's going to call out to him but stops, giving me a look out of the corner of her eye.

No, because Zouken never got the 4th war grail shards 10 years ago, which means he couldn't of put them in Sakura for Kirei to hypothetically steal.

Then again, we only got Zouken's word to go on that he didn't get the grail fragments 10 years ago. Seeing as how Sakura didn't get sick when Brozerker died, either Zouken was telling the truth or Kirei stole them.

We should call Lancer on the date thing.

After all, if this were a proper date we'd have treated her to something fancier than the food court at the mall.

This is our plausible denyability, puts Saber back at ease if 'date' threw her, while also hinting at better food and the fact that we'd treat our ladies right.

Plus, if Lancer's sharper than a damn brick, we're leaving ourselves WIDE OPEN to the 'why not all the bitches' line of questioning.

Also, work in >>24718098 Somehow.

>>24719182

"Nearly gave us a heart attack with that stunt you know."

"Did I? I'll need to remember it for the next time I catch Rider by herself." He says with a smile looking towards us. "didn't know I was that convincing."

"It was a little too convincing. I'm glad we looked before opening fire."

"Fair enough."

".... Lancer?" Saber asks. "Shouldn't you be with your Master? Especially if she's feeling ill....."

"I mostly left because there's a nice 'no questions asked' pharmacy near here." He responds easily. "Since I had to know magic and basic healing stuff under my teacher, that apparently translates to decent modern medical knowledge."

I hesitate, question forming in my mind. "Lancer? Who was it that betrayed your Master at the beginning of the War?"

"... some guy. Associate member of the Mage's association living here. Apparently Kirei asked my Master to meet him before the war started and talk since he was the overseer. When That happened, he found out that she didn't really know how the summoning ritual worked and offered to walk her through it for a rather minimal favor."

"Favor?" Saber asks.

"Apparently he's that Rin girl's guardian or something? Basically he said that it didn't matter if she lost, he would just prefer her surviving if it was at all possible. So she agreed to pull the last punch and then the three of them did the ritual to summon me."

"Then what happened?" I lead.

"I popped in, and before I can say anything the other guy pulls out a knife and attempts to stab Bazett. Kirei kills him and begins healing her because allowing her to die like that while he's helping her set up would be a violation of his neutrality. He healed the wound, but apparently the knife was poisoned or something because she's having a hard time recovering from it."

..... Interesting.

>Anything else you wanted to talk to him about?
>>
>>24719659
Interesting take on the original
>>
>>24719659
Tell him that Kirei is planning to nuke Zouken, who is hiding in the church, or has already done so, and he might want to go take a quick look to see if there are any survivors. If Assassin isn't dead, but in need of a master, we might be able to arrange something with Caster.
>>
Hmm, why doesn't Lancer like Kirei? I remember him flipping out when he learned we left the girls at the church with him
>>
>>24719659

>>

>>
>>24719887

>>24719942
>>24719896

Well if we're going to go full tinfoil hat, I'm going to predict that Kirei made him do it and killed him, poisoned her while pretending to help, and now gets a free pass to fuck with Team Lancer while looking like the good guy.

And this is because Avenger is blackmailing him.

I would add on that Zouken is going to help him fake his death, but that would mean that he and/or avenger are effectively playing xanatos speed chess AGAINST THEMSELVES.
>>
>>24719942

"Zouken apparently tried to kill Kirei earlier, and Kirei was planning to go back after him."

Lancer does a shocked doubletake. "Wait, what?"

"Yeah. Apparently they hit the Church last night while we were busy. Zouken stayed, and Kirei was going back after him."

".... I see." Lancer comments turning away. "I'm going to go see if I can help him. My Master still may need his help."

"Be careful." Saber cautions. He nods, before vanishing from sight. "Well Shirou.... What now?" saber asks, tilting her head.

I've never once heard anyone claim that Guitar Hero or Rock Band are cooler than being able to actually play (in my experience it's usually "Why are you playing that game when you could learn to play a guitar for REAL") and I can't help but think the situation would be more people passing round the controller seeing who can get the high score then someone's like BUT I CAN PLAY IT FOR REAL.

>Karaoke just hits a particular nerve because unlike timed button presses, you don't have a direct arbitrary metric that can inform you that you're terrible. Well, to be fair:

He's been looking for work since like, October.

Seriously. Last I looked his schedule was basically Wake up, hunt for work for about ten hours, run a quest for the evening if he felt at all up to it, sleep for 4-6 hours (apparently plagued by nightmares) for going on six months now.

He never really complains about anything that actually bothers him.

We wander back out of the Arcade, and around the mall itself.

"Shirou? Do you have some other purpose here?"

"... Not really? It just feels weird to just leave the mall without even looking around."

"We did it before."

"We were running from Gilgamesh." I respond, sighing. "I guess we could just go home."

"If it's so strange, we may as well stay for a minute or two." Saber responds. "I'm just unsure of what we might be shopping for. Clothes? That's what Rin seems to take away from these trips."

"... I guess." I look at her. "Come to think of it, you don't have any of your own, do you?"

"Not in this era, no. Rin was kind enough to lend me some of her own."

"Do you want something?"

".... Why? This serves the purpose. I don't have to prance around naked." She pauses suddenly startled. ".... There's nothing wrong with these clothes, is there?"

"What? No, no. Nothing like that, honestly I doubt Rin would try something like that."

"....Right, of course." She blushes slightly, turning away. "Now I feel foolish for even suggesting it. If there was something wrong, you would have said something a while ago."

I stand there, feeling somewhat awkward about the line of conversation when a gentle tug on my sleeve draws me towards one of the stores. ".... I believe I'll need some help with this. I'm unsure of the fashions and haven't spent much time considering women's clothing."

"Well, that makes two of us." I respond, getting a smile out of her.

>I'm not entirely sure how to go about this. Do you guys want to just skip past the shopping montage, or actually go through it?

As a man who grew up in a household of women (and considering Taiga would have drug him around and made him wait, give his opinion, and carry all the damn bags) I think Shirou would have a loose grasp of current styles / things he likes to see women in, and a high tolerance for being in the midst of 'delicates' (as after a while the embarrassment of being surrounded by panties wears off and you just realize you're bored).

Of course, I ended up with an affinity for simple blacks and whites and an aversion to shopping for clothes out of my childhood, but such is life.
>>
We depart the mall not long after with two rather modest bags between us.

She was rather insistent on not spending too much money on her, so we settled on a few simple outfits before leaving. My cellphone rings, and I answer. "Emiya."

"Kid." Lancer's voice comes over the line. "Kirei's dead."

My heart skips a beat. "You're sure?"

"Yeah. I didn't see everything, but Zouken used some sort of magic to turn his body to ash." He hesitates. "I would've called sooner, but I only just slipped away and wanted to inform my Master first."

"...Alright."

"There's more. His Assassin is weird."

"Weird how?"

"Weird weird." He answers, frustrated. "He's got the moves and the skill, but something about it seems off. Like an old man trying to emulate things he did in his youth after losing his muscle and stiffening his joints. I don't really know how else to describe it."

I think back to the fight at the temple. ".... That doesn't sound right. He definitely wasn't like that when I saw him. Maybe Kirei wounded him?"

"... No, I don't think that's the case." Lancer comments. "If we knew what his Noble Phantasm was, we might be able to figure something out. The problem is that in order to qualify for Assassin, you have to be both famous and have people have no idea who you were or what you're capable of."

".... Yeah, that's going to be problematic." I return, sighing. "Thanks for the update."

"Of course." Lancer hangs up and I put my phone away.

When I tell Saber, she seems oddly disbelieving. "Kirei killed so easily?"

"He was wounded, lightly, but still. And they had fought before. Who knows what sort of preparations Zouken could have made?"

"Even so...." Saber looks to me, suddenly quite serious. "Two obvious options before us."

"The Church. Trail's hot, and like you said: Kirei going down easily doesn't sound right to me."

Saber nods, and we take off in a run in that direction. I call home and pass the news to Rider, who hangs up after saying that they would meet us wherever we ended up.

We arrive only a few minutes after we took off, with Saber's help we make good time. I stash the bags nearby and we walk up to the doors. I slowly part the way, and we see Assassin crouched and squatting on top of the alter, apparently waiting for something. His head barely twitches in our direction and I hear a voice comeing from seemingly everywhere.

"Shirou. How interesting that Lancer arrives and now you, so quickly. Someone sharing notes behind my back?"

"Zouken." I say, my voice almost a growl. Saber's already armored when I glance in her direction.

"I don't see him." She whispers, and I nod.

"I'm hardly going to just walk into the open. I'm a frail old man in body, and one of you did their level best to kill me on a prior occasion."

"You had it coming." I return levelly. "You evil bastard."

"Morality is rather more subjective than you seem to think." The voice answers, almost conversationally. "I had my reasons, I have goals and ambitions. The results you encountered were merely the effects of one plan I had."

".... And that justifies things?"

"I simply don't care about the means as much as the results. For what it's worth, if Sakura's useless to me then I'd rather she's happy. Her happiness no longer impacts my goals. Just because it was never my priority doesn't mean I wanted her to suffer needlessly."

The sickening part is that he isn't lying. I can tell just from the way he talks that he's capable of great and honest kindness when it suits him. That he's even inclined to it.

And yet he did it anyway.

Saber's at my back, watching the angles I can't while Assassin stares impassively at us both.

>What say? Feel free to ask anything here.

"Well, since you're here I may as well ask you something important. Berserker hasn't returned to the Grail vessel, despite all evidence pointing towards him being long dead. You know anything about that?"
>>
>>24723026
"Why attack Kirei? Surely killing the Mediator will draw a lot of attention from the Church."
>>
>>24723026
"What the hell prompted you to go after Kirei? He wasn't a Master, and ganking the Church moderator seems pretty high on the Very Bad Idea list."
>>
>>24723026
According to Kirei, you came after him because you thought he was Lancer's Master. But, as you've probably figured out by now, that wasn't true at all.

So what the hell made you think that in the first place? Or was Kirei just lying to me and you're actually the honorable hero of justice who saved the world from the machinations of the corrupt priest?
>>
>>24723069

"The answer there is rather simple. If he hasn't gone into the vessel, there's either another vessel or he isn't dead. I rather doubt the prior, since that was my original failed plan. Of course, it's existence wouldn't rule out the latter."

>>24723072
>>24723103

"When the Church learns of how much he's been interfering in the war, they won't do much to avenge his death. Frankly, I was sick of his meddling with the stunts he was pulling in the last war."

>>24723136

"Hah! I'm no hero, and I'll never make the claim to being one of those deluded fools. No, I learned my information form a source more reputable than you that Lancer was at Kirei's beck and call. The fact that he was here recently doesn't mean he wasn't Kirei's servant, he simply hasn't had time to fade. Besides, if he had leverage on Lancer or his Master, he could manipulate them fairly easily. He did most of the fighting in the fourth war by proxy after all."
>>
>>24723163
>I learned my information form a source more reputable than you that Lancer was at Kirei's beck and call.

Let me guess... it was Avenger, one of the Archers, or Mr. I-got-my-ass-kidnapped Shinji? I mean, other than Team Lancer, pretty much all the remaining Grail War participants are squatting at my house, so unless you've got a spooky mystery informant the list of suspects isn't long.

Speaking of Avenger, I recently threw a wrench in one of their plans, and I've got it on good authority that "Plan B" may involve slaughtering most of the town to power whatever the hell they're up to.
>>
>>24723163
"I had lunch with Lancer's Master. We negotiated a truce, so that we can resolve this whole Avenger clusterfuck. After that, Lancer ran into us when we were both taking care of unrelated matters, and said that his Master did have a connection to Kirei. Apparently, he saved their life; but it was Kirei's fault their life was in danger in the first place.
What meddling has Kirei been up to?"

>Kirei
"Beyond leveraging control over multiple servants and involving himself in Avenger's affairs?" He pauses thoughtfully. "Multiple affairs. His over-interest in you, the fact that he was protecting the Tohsaka girl-"

"He's her guardian -Or was anyway- how is his interest in her suspicious?"

"The man has never cared about the welfare of others. If he didn't simply leave her to her fate, it was for some greater purpose, not his own benevolence. Not after what he did to her family."

Yeah, everyone knows thats not going to happen. He's either up to something evil, or he's the supreme overlord of the "tragically misunderstood good guy" archetype, and I somehow doubt the latter.

Oh, and in case you weren't aware, the "Plan A" I ruined apparently hinged on some weakling Vampire they had managed to capture. I still have no idea what they were planning on doing with the damn thing, but they were VERY angry when it died.

"I'm not sure he did the deed himself, but he had a Role in Tokiomi's death. Furthermore he arranged my nephew Kariya to arrive to the corpse after he used a meeting with him as leverage to get everyone else to fight in unfavorable conditions. Upon finding the corpse, Tokiomi's wife arrived in time to see the man she considered her closest friend apparently having murdered her husband. At which point he killed her. Or crippled her. I'll be honest, I stopped paying attention when she stopped mattering."

".... What?" Saber breaths, apparently having a greater understanding of what he said.

"Yes, you think I'm evil? Kirei apparently up and decided to make the family rip itself apart from the inside after living with them and helping for almost three years. to this day I still have no idea how or why he did any of it."

>>24723370

"Evil, as I said, is a rather debatable point of view." He hesitates. "That said, I also find it disquieting. I'm not sure what he's plotting, but I doubt it's anything good. The truly odd part is that he doesn't even look like a Servant magically."

".... The vampire is interesting. I can't think of anything that would require a vampire specifically, and they seem highly impractical for most of the reasons that do occur."

>>24723399

"I have no reason to tell you anything. Perhaps it was the Archer, or a bird. Maybe I learned it from a dream."

"I have no real reason to lie to you. Many of my enemies are yours as well, albeit for different reasons. As for Kirei, he's had a rather nasty habit of not dieing in the past. Even this morning, he faked his death and slipped away and tried a sneak attack again this afternoon. I endevored to be as through as possible in disposing the corpse in case he had some other trick up his sleeve."

What is your goal for this grail war? I mean I figure you aren't after the grail since it's trying to obtain sentience so really why are you still here? Shouldn't you be lurking underground waiting for a better chance?

I'm pretty sure his goal is still to use the Grail to reach the Root. I doubt he's the type to care if the Grail spawns a dark god, provided he gets what he wants out of it.

I don't know... As much as I appreciate Your tags, I don't feel it fit's when the trolling was out of character.

As for Assassin's weird moves, I bet Zouken "improved" his body. Or actually gave him a body, just because Avenger has one and it works (as in "doesn't drain prana from a Master").

His actual goal was immortality IIRC. The Einzberns wanted to reclaim the 3rd magic. Only the Tohsakas wanted the root.
>>
>>24726513

That's his corrupted goal.

His original goal was to see the grail complete. Somewhere along the way he got lost.

Having him meet Ilya might put him back but IC theres no reason for us to engineer that meeting.

>His actual goal was immortality IIRC.
I'm pretty sure AC-Guy loves to change some aspects of the world and than watch us all turning Panic Mode on. See Archer being Shirou. Zouken can be this timeline's Kerry just as well as BBEG (is it even mutually exclusive?).

Apple of Eden IIRC was an artifact that basically messes with people's perception and lets the user twist people to their will.
Not sure how that relates here, other than that Altair would have a piece of the Apple if it's him.
Not that I think it's him.

> I bet Zouken "improved" his body.

Maybe they used Kirei's body? Or True Assassin 'ate' whatever was left of Broserker.

I almost wish that Assassin class Servants can access memories of other Hassans from Grail Wars 1-4. That would give the Master potential setting breaking powers for a (relatively) shit tier Servant.
Alas, they all probably get that memory reset when they return to the Throne of Heroes, so that plan to learn what screwed up in the 2nd and 3rd Grail War is a bust.

If only it were that simple. Zolchen Makiri was a participant in the first Holy Grail War. At the time, he probably just wanted the Root. And then Justica von Einzbern became the core of the Grail system and his goal changed to saving her. He failed to win the war.

Time passed and he kept looking for a way to save her. The system was too well designed for him to manage it alone, and besides he'd need the Third Magic to get her a body after hers was consumed and the Einzburns sure as fuck weren't going to help on that front. He got old, and was running out of time, so he changed his goals in the short term to extending his own life so that he could go back to searching for a way to save Justica. But every life extension treatment left him with just a little less time, and with every treatment a bit more of himself slipped away. He decided he needed to cut the crap and get an immortal body, but he'd forgotten why he needed it.

Remember Merlin's admonishment of the Einzberns for mistaking their means for their goal? I laughed out loud, because that's Zouken's entire character right there. He's completely forgotten the reason he's given up his humanity.

{Interrogating Kirei about Gilgamesh}
>After a long moment of silence, Rin speaks up. “Do you know how my Father died?” “No. I wasn't there when it happened.” He looks away. “When I left, he was still breathing. Gilgamesh did suspect he planned to betray him for some reason.” “Do you know why?” “Sorry.” He responds, shaking his head. >“Who killed Tokiomi?” "I'm not sure. He was alive when I left, but the Matou champion said he was dead when he arrived." He shrugs. "I could list suspects, but that amounts to every other living Master at the time. If you were especially paranoid, you could even add me as a suspect." He gives me a curious look. "Rather pointed line of questioning, isn't it?" His tone seems more amused at the lack of trust than offended. > Wait, how did you 'leave' where you were trapped under burning rubble while bleeding to death? "I managed to heal the wound enough to not bleed to death and then crawled out over the course of the next few days."

Roy Harper was Speedy/Red Arrow/Arsenal.
One of the unique things about Roy was that, starting in the '90s, he had a daughter, Lian. Lian was fucking adorable. I have never met a person who actively disliked her. She was something UNIQUE about Roy. He was a single parent, and was actually doing a pretty good job. And then in the (incredibly shitty) miniseries Justice League: Cry For Justice, they offed her for cheap shock value.

Yup. That book had a LOT of goodies for you to pick off of. Dat ending with the "south africa plan" man Now go write the paper so you aren't paying the MAN twice for the same shitty class. The once finals are done boot up Cataclysm DDA and get your post-apoc zambeezy survival on. Build a hobo mobile and roam the world blamming former citizens with your deagle brand deagle and die after crashing into a bank at 130 mph.
