Predator Quest: Episide 13

You are Three-Claw, a Yautja hunter of the Cloud Viper clan. You have been tasked by your clan Matriarch to embark on a hunt on the world of Fey'lenn, or Pandora, as it is known to humans.

The previous quest thread is archived here:

For alerts and scheduling on future sessions.

The clan moot is currently in session. Your matriarch responds to Clan Night-Prowler's challenge with an irritating click. "So be it."

She glances at her wrist computer, and turns to you. "There is someone asking for you in the entrance hall. See to it."

You acknowledge, and exit the rotunda.

You make your way to the entrance hall, and is greeted by your mentor. Behind him stands the archivist, and several guards. They are gingerly directing a large hover platform with a tall scaffolding mounted upon it.

Bonded to the scaffolding, standing up, is the carcass of the Pandoran Queen. She stands at her full height menacingly.

The archivist turns to you. "It's preserved and mounted," she tells you.

Your mentor quickly brings you aside. "The Matriarch asked me late last night to prepare this platform. I assume she's in control of what's happening. Tell me, what's it like in there?"

Do you;

A. "My mission is being challenged by the Night-Prowler clan. She needs this as evidence."
B. "The Matriarch is in a gambit with the Night-Prowlers. This should put the fight in her favor."
C. "Just wheel this in. I don't want to spoil the surprise."
>>

Welcome back OP! I hope the undergrad wasn't streaking through the campus while on ecstasy.

And I'll vote for C. And make sure our helmet is recording.
>>
>>24717998
>A. "My mission is being challenged by the Night-Prowler clan. She needs this as evidence."

They claim that I have lied and falsified data on the queen - our matriarch has made them err, they have promised their whole fleet to aid on the mission *if* there is proof that the queen actually existed and was killed by me. Don't let your jaw drop too far when you see the looks on other matriarchs faces.

>B. "The Matriarch is in a gambit with the Night-Prowlers. This should put the fight in her favor."

But that's totally gonna ruin the look on everyone's face (sans our own Matriarch).

We must be super-secret for the next minute.

Nice neutral response. Never know who might be listening in.

Close.

Caught with beer in the undergrad library.

Sorry about that.

"The Matriarch is in a gambit with the Night-Prowlers. This should put the fight in her favor." You answer.

"Right. You want us to push this thing through the front door, or would you like to go in there first and introduce us?

A. "Let's get this display in there right away. I'll hold the door."

B. "Better wait outside. I'll go in there and take a look. I'll signal you on your wrist computer when it's appropriate.
>>
>>24717998
C.
>>
>>24718206
Eh, A. It would be more fun if we could have it beamed in, but we don't want to keep them waiting.
>>
>>24718206
I want to go with A) and just see amused and astonished looks on faces everywhere.

Or we could go in and challenge the matriarch for calling us a liar and have it wheeled in shortly after.

B. Timing is everything.
>>

B. Wait for the Matriarch to give the word.

"Better wait outside. I'll go in there and take a look. I'll signal you on your wrist computer when it's appropriate."

Your mentor acknowledges.

You return to the Rotunda and rejoin the moot. You find your Matriarch in the middle of a speech.

"... clear that this is a credible threat. We should draft a proper response."

She turns to you. "I assume everything is in order? Good. We were just discussing the proposed responses to the threat. Your input would be appreciated."

The Clan Night-Prowler Matriarch taps her seat with irritation. "One moment, Cloud-Viper. What threat? I asked you for hard evidence and you have provided none. Is it not a little too soon to be speaking of a response to a threat that, in all likelihood, was fabricated to begin with?"

Your Matriarch gives you an inquisitive look.

Do you say:

A: "Honorable Matriarch, the delivery you were expecting has arrived. Shall I inform them to bring it in?"

B. "The evidence Clan Night-Prowler keenly seeks is currently waiting outside. Shall I have it brought in?"

C. "Honorable Matriarch, there is someone here to see you. They say it's urgent. Shall I have them brought in?"

D. Say nothing, and signal your mentor to bring it in.
>>
>>24718423

Welcome back OP!
>>
>>24718501
>A.

You turn to your Matriarch. "Honorable Matriarch, the delivery you were expecting has arrived. Shall I inform them to bring it in?"

She glances at the Night-Prowler Matriarch, who gloats, "You are stalling, Cloud-Viper. If you have no evidence, then adjourn the moot."

She nods. "Bring it in."

You send your mentor the signal.

The double doors suddenly swing open and the fearsome full display of the Pandoran Queen is wheeled in. Your mentor drags the display platform past you and parks it straight in the middle of the chamber.

A series of surprised clicks and growls erupt around the room. The Night-Prowler matriarch is suddenly taken aback.

The carcass suddenly emits a sharp screech, and were you not certain it's dead, you probably would have leapt into a combat stance. Every matriarch, including your own, suddenly flinches from the sound.

"After analysing its vocals," your mentor says non-nonchalantly, "we've managed to imitate what it would have sounded it when it was alive. Fortunately, thanks to my fine protoge here," he gestures to you, "It is not."

Your mentor turns to you. "Now, Three-Claw, since this is your kill, would you like to give a hunter's analysis of this creature to the honorable matriarchs present?"

Do you:

A. Accept, and begin to verbally dissect the specimen.
B. Let your mentor have the honors, since he is the most experienced hunter in the room.
>>
>>24718645
...no. Why would you even suggest that?

Thats treading into inter-clan warfare territory, and nobody wants that. Lets just settle for giving them a thorough political shit-kicking and call it good.
>>
>>24718668
A. We've sat back enough. Let's remind the council that we are competent.
>>

>A. Accept, and begin to verbally dissect the specimen.

We're the one that fought it. We can punctuate the discussion with how it used its various features against us, and how we countered.
>>
>>24718668
>B. Let your mentor have the honors, since he is the most experienced hunter in the room.

As much as I would LOVE to gloat, we've never faced a normal Queen before. We have nothing to compare it to. His testimony will most likely be of more use.
>>
>>24718668
A. I love my nigga Jackal, but we fought it. He can get the next one though.
>>
>>24718668

It is our kill, we should be the ones to verbally dissect the specimen. We're also the ones who fought it, so we're the only ones who got a live experience of what it was like.

A lets make our mentor proud.

>>
>>24718714
>> A. Accept, and begin to verbally dissect the specimen.

You thank your mentor and begin to explain to the matriarchs each aspect of the specimen, recalling methods from your past studies.

You describe, professionally and thoroughly its movement patterns, muscle density, and exo-skeleton plate arrangements. Throughout this entire analysis, the room remains dead quiet. The Night-Prowler matriarch is silent, and her left-hand shakes imperceptibly.

You come to a conclusion.

The room remains shrouded in awkward silence.

Do you:

A: Break the silence and ask whether there are questions.
B. Say nothing.
C. Defer back to your mentor and ask if it was a sufficient analysis.

You defer back to your mentor and ask if it was a sufficient analysis.

Your mentor clicks in acknowledgement. "Excellent analysis, Three-Claw."

He turns to the matriarchs, gleefully ignoring the silence. "As you can plainly see, this one exhibits quite a few differences from the average strain. Sure, there have been other strain mutations in the past, but they're extremely rare, as the royal pure strains are extremely resistant to change. I would not presume to speak beyond my calling, but I would say this is a result of certain tampering, and it warrants further actions."

Your matriarch begins to speak. "Yes, thank you Three-Claw. I must say, this is the first time I've personally seen the specimen up close, and it is certainly imposing."

She turns to the Night-Prowler Matriarch.

"I assume this is sufficient evidence? Or would you like to examine it up close yourself?"

The Night Prowler trembles, but quickly composes herself. She clicks rapidly. "I was wrong. This threat is real, and Clan Night-Prowler will stand behind our people and the Yautja empire to do everything we can to eliminate it. We Night-Prowlers have never shied away from admitting when we're wrong, and we'll always stand with the interests of the Empire."

Your Matriarch responds. "That is very grateful of you, Clan Night-Prowler; your loyalty was never in doubt. It is good to have your commitment. Your fleet will be instrumental in defeating this threat!"

The Night-Prowler prepares to speak, but suddenly decides to withdraw and stay silent. She turns to you for a moment, and speaks, "Young hunter, I apologize for doubting your claims, and for that, I have wrong your clan and your honor. Please, accept my apologies."

How do you respond:

A. Say "It was a difficult claim to swallow, and I understand. I accept this apology and look forward to working with Clan Night-Prowler in the future."
B. "Such apologies are meaningless in the face of my lost honor!"
>>

You graciously accept the apology. Your matriarch clicks. "Thank you for your apology, Clan Night-Prowler. Let this small incident not mar the cooperation our two clans have shared in the past. But, by custom, there is a matter of reparations, from Clan Night-Prowler to Clan Cloud-Viper, for breaching our honor."

The Night-Prowler Matriarch gestures in deference. "Yes. We will abide by the rules of honor." She turns to you. "Young Hunter, Night-Prowler owes you one favor. What shall it be?"

You glance at your matriarch. She gestures approval. "Remember, young hunter, this is a matter of clan honor, and it is a matter of custom. Do not be reserved. Ask for what you desire, within reason." She stresses the last part.

Do you:

A. Ask for a large sum of credits.
B. Ask for a two year contract with Night-Prowler technicians to service your ship.
C. Ask for entry into the Night-Prowler armory.
D. Other.

You ask her for entrance into the Night-Prowler armory. She hesitates for a moment, then responds, "Certainly. We will graciously host you at our armory, and you are free to take whatever kit you can fit on your body."

She turns to your Matriarch. "I trust this is sufficient?"

Your matriarch gestures approval. "Yes. Thank you. Cloud-Viper accepts, and the honor has been restored to both our clans."

She turns to the rest of the matriarchs. "Now, if no clans object, let us decide the next step."

The guards escorting the display make their leave, and your mentor and the archivist moves to stand by you.

The room is filled with much discussion, which proceeds for well over half a day, with each matriarch putting forth their own suggestions.

At last, three credible options surface.

A. Blockade the system with a war fleet while a small team of warriors infiltrate the planet to identify and destroy key sites and infestation.

B. Send in a war fleet under cloak and destroy all Weyland ships in orbit while several teams scour the surface for signs of infestation.

C. Alert a nearby human fleet with spoofed Weyland data and attempt to pull the two into battle. In the mean time, a small Yautja team will infiltrate the surface and cleanse/destroy key sites.

Your Matriarch calls for a small pause in the talks for everyone to mull on the matter. You will reconvene in one hour for the voting.

She bids you and your mentor to follow her to the ready room and shuts the door.

"Very quickly, which of the three are you inclined towards?"

You answer:

A. Blockade and infiltration.
B. Occupy orbit and infiltration.
C. Incite battle between humans.
>>
>>24719815
C. Let humans fight amongst humans, since Weyland is known to be unpopular. Meanwhile, a small, stealthy team can study and then exterminate any hard-meat threats and hives on the surface.
>>
>>24719815
A. Nothing can escape

It might be nice to pass word amongst humans of what weyland is doing, but we cant trust them to resolve it. B gives them too much knowledge of our race should any escape.
>>
>>24719815
C. While a blockade would be fun, we need to keep a low profile so da humies don't know how powerful we are. Get them into a melee and we can use the chaos to plant nukes.

And we can grab a couple of trophies.
>>
>>24719815
>A
Xenomorph infection to other worlds, and I fear B carries the risk of having our tech found or other evidence of our presence.
>>
>>24719815
>A. Blockade and infiltration.

Bottle them up, destroy their research, then finish them off. As tempting as a pitched space battle is, we can't risk them slipping out a ship carrying the research data in all the confusion.
>>
>>24719815
A probably best if we leave no survivors.

The only reason I lean towards C is because it's more controlled and less risk of an all out war with humanity.
>>
C. get the other human clans to finish off clan wayland
>>
A, we can't risk this spreading to other worlds, even if it means wiping out all of the WY. In fact that's probably the only way to stop WY from investigating further, if they believe everything is destroyed they won't go digging. That's how this incident started in the first place.

Whatever we choose, we should still alert the other human clans as to what happened to the marine ship. That can only hinder further WY efforts.
>>
>>24719815
C. More in keeping with our stealthy nature.

>>C. Incite battle between humans.

You voice your approval for inciting battle between human clans. Your mentor thinks for a moment. "Yes, I agree. Human clans have fought each other in the past on multiple occasions. We will, however, require a significant fleet presence. Under cloak, of course."

The Matriarch gestures approval. "Thank you both for your input. However, Cloud-Viper does not have much contact with the humans. What do we stand to offer in this endeavour?"

Do you say:

A: "I have experience with spoofing human comms. I also have autopsy data of their synthetic warriors."
B. "I will gladly pledge myself to the mission for Cloud-Viper."
C. Say nothing.

If we are selected, we will accept. It would be presumptuous to pledge ourselves.

A/B. Offer our services as the manipulator to ensure that the Humans get just enough information to get the party started. That's a good contribution.

Your mentor taps the desk. "We also have - will have - volumes upon volumes of data from studying the Queen specimen. This will prove to be instrumental. I can also recommend the names of several promising young hunters to join the mission."

The matriarch looks at your mentor. "Jackal, what about your fellow elders? Can you convince one or two of them to join the effort?"

Your mentor thinks. "It would be difficult. They can provide knowledge, but like me, they are long past the age fit for personal combat."

The matriarch looks to you. "And you, Three-Claw? Would you be willing to lead this initiative on behalf of Cloud-Viper, to return to Fey'lenn and carry out whatever it is which needs to be done?"

Do you answer:

The Matriarch gestures approval. "Then I will pledge your services on behalf of the clan."

Your mentor taps the desk. "So it is settled. The other matter, then. The one I spoke to you about yesterday."

The Matriarch glances at you, then looks at your mentor. "You know best. Take care of it."

She turns and exits. You proceed to follow, but your mentor stops you. "Let her go. It's her battle now. We'll know the results soon enough. For the moment, let us talk about something else. Let us talk about your promotion."

You click in confusion.

"Promotion?" you ask.

Your mentor leads you out of the ready room and towards the exit.

"The Matriarch has pledged you to lead the initiative on behalf of the clan. We can't have a just-blooded hunter lead others, now can we? No. You need to be pushed up in rank, for propriety's sake if nothing else, and with your exploits, I think it's more than enough to justify a rise in the ranks. What do you say?"

>C. "Whatever you think is best."

"Whatever you think is best."

"Good. There won't be much ceremony for this one, and will require some extra work on your end. I had the foresight of declaring you to be on your elite provisional trials prior to you leaving for Fey'lenn, and it's hard to argue against you passing it with flying colors. You're not an elite just yet, however, and I won't be putting you through the qualifying trials any time soon. No. You'll be named High Hunter, which is a more political title than anything else. It gives you the right to represent your clan and lead others."

He pauses.

"It will, however, mean you'll need to take up a signature skill, whether it'd be specialization with a particular weapon, like the spear gun, or a skill, like tracking. So, what's it going to be, weapon or skill?"

Do you answer:

A: A weapon.
B. A skill.

Our disc brought us great honor on two occasions, Our wrist blades on one occasion, our caster saved our hide many times, our spear saved us from a few drones and other threats.

Our stealth and ability to gather information was vital to our successes on fey'linn, and while this seems like a good choice it seemingly leaves us unable to lead others adequately in fights as our new role demands.

They don't need us at the moot anymore, we can do both of these in the same trip.

How should we distribute our stuff? The only truly unique ones are the praetorian head and whatever part of the queen we take. We should at least save one trophy for the other clan's quartermaster to soften the blow of running amok in her armoury.

You go to the space port and retrieve your chest of trophies.

You take stock of your inventory.

1. Whole chestburster
2. Drone tail
3. Synthetic head
4. 3 large fish teeth
5. 1 Na'vi head + spine
6. 1 flying drone head
7. 1 inner-mouth of Pandoran praetorian

You set aside the flying drone head, having promised it to your matriarch (who promised it to Clan Thunder-Steel) and examine the rest.

You come up with a list of possible names who would appreciate a trophy.

First on the list is the Matriarch. Which of these trophies should you reserve for her?

C. Synthetic head
D 3 large fish teeth
E Na'vi head + spine
F. 1 inner-mouth of Pandoran praetorian
G. None.

The true value is in their meaning to a cunning hunter...it's the little things that can kill you, so keep your wits about you. Never underestimate seemingly weak or unimpressive prey. Mentor would probably dig that.

>>

The archivist could possibly learn a lot from the synth head though - it would be incredibly interesting to her

Along with our personal take on the GODDAMN FIS.

He'll probably get a kick out of it.
>>
>>24721130
>Yautja synths/ impoved bionic techology?

hmmmmmmmmm

Unfortunately, Yautja society doesn't advance that much.
>>
>>24721119
Fish teeth wins!

1. Matriarch: Na'vi head+spine
2. Mentor: Fish teeth
3. Mother ?
4. Armory quartermaster: Synth head
5. Shipmaster ?
6. Archivist ?

Next: Mother:

A. Whole chestburster
B. Drone tail
C. 1 inner-mouth of Pandoran praetorian
D. None.
>>
>>24721138
He could possibly give us some serious knowledge on how to handle the Fis as well?
>>
>>24721130
I think the archivist would like either the synth head of the whole chestbuster. It's probably a bitch and a half to get a whole chestbuster for study.
>>
>>24721145
A, B, or D. Not C.
>>
>>24721145
A
>>
>>24721145

A it is!

1. Matriarch: Na'vi head+spine
2. Mentor: Fish teeth
3. Mother: Chestburster
4. Armory quartermaster:
5. Shipmaster ?
6. Archivist ?

Seems like the synthetic head -> quartermaster pair wasn't as consensus as I thought.

Putting it up to revote!

Quartermaster:

A. Synthetic head
B. Drone tail
C. 1 inner-mouth of Pandoran praetorian
D. None.
>>
>>24721204
that's a bad thing? ....honor wise banging the archivist is a smart move, she could become infatuated with us and be all the more willing to archive our hunts.

B
>>
>>24721216
A. C is a unique specimen, and the Archivist is better positioned to study it.
>>
>>24721204
I think that's his idea.
I'd much rather the quartermaster got the praetorian mouth. That'd probably give us close to unlimited access to the armory/ maybe she could work on our EM resistant Hardmeat armor.

4 Drone tail.

>>
Yeah just give her the head. Give the praetorian to the archivist because that will supplement her studies with the queen.

And I guess the shipsmaster would get the tail then.

Once they are done studying the queen body do we get to keep part of it? Technically it was our trophy until we donated it to the clan.
>>
Tie between B and C.

Need a tiebreaker.

>>24721273

Its our solemn duty to mount that shit in the clan hall for everyone to see. Not everyday someone brings back a WHOLE Queen, let alone a Pandoran flying mega-rapist queen. It would be a waste if we kept it to ourselves.
>>
>>24721324
Seconded. Not like we won't get plenty of glory from it that way. We don't need to mount its head over our mantle.

B IT IS

1. Matriarch: Na'vi head+spine
2. Mentor: Fish teeth
3. Mother: Chestburster
4. Armory quartermaster: Drone tail

A: Synthetic Head
B. Praetorian mouth
C. None

>>
>>24721465
Damn just imagine strangling queens to death just so they are intact. We need to get a garrote don't we?
>>
>>24721465
I still like the idea of heavy duty plasma weaponry surely the yautja have some kind of assault rifle...or CANNON
>>
>>24721497
yes...yes we do
>>
>>24721497
That would work for most things, but not against xenomorphs. They can operate for fairly long periods in vacuum, so I doubt having their airway constricted would particularly inconvenience them.
>>
>>24721498
Of course they do - but those are weapons of war, and not weapons for testing your skill with on a hunt.
>>
>>24721540
True...but isn't the fact that we almost assembled a war fleet implicative of the fact that we are at minimum involved in a police action?
>>
>>24721555
The war fleet is there to make sure nothing escapes, the actual plan is to incite humans into fighting each other, then sneak around and wreck wey-yu's shit and make it look like humans
>>
>>24721555
When the predators go to war they have ridiculously powerful weaponry. And while there maybe a quarantine enacted, we're still going hunting.
>>
>>24721555
While we have a heavy duty plasma caster (which has saved our ass sooooo many times), the plasma cannon/rifle just isn't really our infilitrator style.
>>
>>24721568
I guess that is where I got mixed up if its still a hunt than I take it back thanks
>>
>>24721555
Yes, but I don't think things have escalated to a proper war just yet.

We did nuke the Hive and kill the Queen, and gave WY a huge black eye in the process. I doubt the big guns will be necessary, and the prospect of being able to take some trophies on the side is probably great for keeping the warriors on task and in good spirits.
>>
>>24721423
Before we go to the quartermaster, could we visit Clan Night-Prowler's armory?
>>
>>24721573
hmmmmm what about...some kind of bad ass holographic decoy than? throwing sound is one thing but a decoy that can run around is a whole new level of distraction
>>
>>24721591
I like.

>>24721583
Good thinking.
>>
>>24721591
Why create something to be seen when you can literally walk around unseen. There's going to be a *lot* more than just us there, we're going to be taking some of our own clan and leading them as well as elites from other clans as well.

This is part hunt, part terrifying fucking lightning raid all under the guise of wey-yu fighting against other humans.
>>
>>24721623
right so we create a hologram that looks like wey-yu or the colonials finest. to distract whoever we encountry/funnel them towards each other
>>
>>24721583
I'll put that up as a choice.
>>
>>24721648
0.0 PQ is watching even when we think he has gone away...PQ is the true steal/inflitration master
>>
We should make a point to grab as many xeno trophies as we can so we can study their EM resistance.
>>
>>24721648
Thank you! I'd just like to know what new selection we have and select from there before we supplement it from our own clan armory and possibly more of the quartermaster's private stock.
>>
>>24721639
Or we just patch into their radio networks... also the power requirements for such a device are likely to be unfeasible... and I doubt our clan has the technology (well, they *have* the technology, but not necessarily the ideology to put it to use - yaujta have fucktons of engineers, but very very few researchers because they don't care).

Honestly that's probably the sort of thing that's considered borderline dishonorable on a hunt. Because if you're not actively hunting something you have more than enough firepower at your hands to blow them out of the water or avoid them, and if you are actively hunting something the deception is unnecessary.
>>
>>24721711
>yaujta have fucktons of engineers, but very very few researchers because they don't care

In the future, once we've solidified our reputation as a stone-cold badass, we need to go full Big Boss and set up our own little autonomous R&D program.

The foolish will target what they can see or chase it into one of our cunning traps.
>>
>>24721702
Second. I'm hoping that the analysis machines the matriarch got can be put to use for this purpose.
>>
>>24721728
Basically the yaujta found a full intact working stc with the whole library. There's very little innovation in yaujta society because A) there's no real genuine need of it and B) they already have *ALL* the knowledge, and they understand it too - they just don't have people making the mental bridges from A -> B -> C.

So innovation more often than not takes place on an individual basis, and very infrequently. Almost everything Yaujta do is purely out of recreation - if they felt like conquering the whole galaxy they could do it with ease.
>>
>>24721711
>>24721753

Obviously, it'd need an external power source. Our suit couldn't handle it.
>>
>>24721761

40k reference. Standard Template Construction.
http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/STC#.UYtjvuTP01o

An STC can tell you how to make a specific thing perfectly from nearly any starting knowledge level or material.
>>
>>24721753
As presented by >>24721711

If you're not hunting them, you either avoid them or kill them outright it is literally 0 problem for a yaujta (I mean we shot nukes at drones and that was with a stealth ship - a warship could do much, much worse). If you are hunting them the deception is unnecessary because hunts are tests of skill and strength, making opponents walk into traps they have no chance against isn't skillful nor is it a test of ones strength.

Part of the reason that preds view queens with such respect is that they can prettymuch go all out on them and they still have a fairly good chance of getting their asses kicked.
>>
>>24721784
40k term.

"Standard Template Construct". Its basically a giant 3d printer with the schematics for every piece of tech ever.
>>
>>24721812
neat...channeling my inner /k/ here but anybody see the "liberator" its a gun you can produce via 3D printer
>>
>>24721784
STC -> Standard Templace Construct. Basically its the sum-total of all human knowledge ever and it can tell you how to build amazing things from even crappy stuff.

The Engineers in aliens/predators were basically the masters of time/space/the universe - if you want to go doctor who on it, engineers are basically timelords. Predators as a young race found engineer stuff and reverse engineered it, rocketing their technological understanding of the universe ahead prettymuch to the same point of engineers - but not their social culture, so they remain hunters but they have 0 actual 'need' for anything.
