Deep in the Ash Wastes there lies a strange fortress. Any who investigate it disappear, never to be heard from again. The legends of the Ash Wastes Tribes claim that its dungeons and vaults are full of the Forces of Creation ready to be taken up by any who can successfully navigate its halls. Old geezers and wise men across the Edge of the Wastes like to tell stories of vast hordes of inhuman warriors pouring from its gates and rampaging across the cities of the Edge. Most folk simply ignore these claims as the ramblings of madmen. As for myself? Well... it might not be a bad idea to go along with the Count's plan to heighten the walls.

So ancient that the annals of the god of history mention it in an early volume, The City of Obelisks is one of the most remote, forbidding locations a party of adventurers can go to. According to the incalculably old tablets of Yilang-Do, the City of Obelisks was built 4 planetary ages (roughly 35,000,000 years) before the arrival of modern magic using humans, and fossils extracted from the area suggest that it was already a ruin when our demihuman ape-man ancestors were just learning to use bones and stones as weapons. Scrying is confused by distance and unknown forces which appear to conglomerate in the area, however, high levels of psionic and magical force have been detected, and if you are below level 50, the adventurers guidebook warns you explicitly to stay away from this area.

Hailing from a forgotten age, these ancient machines of war are immensely formidable, their armor shrugging off both magic and blade alike, more frightening than their armor are the massive cannon they carry, centuries more advanced than even the greatest of guns, they break castle walls open as if they were made from twigs. Only a few are known to exist, but when they do appear, the side they fight for is almost guaranteed victory

Yeah, it's a good idea to start posting something other than just scenery.

The Hal-vad (Chosen Ones in their tongue) are a mysterious race that lives in remote areas. They are skilled warriors and are renowned for their careless cruelty. They follow a strange religion that revolves around a symbiotic relationship with their helms. Each helm is a living, parasitic creature that gives the Hal-vad unknown power or powers. Some scholars speculate that the Hal-vad are simply humans, and that the helms actually gain control of the host's mind.

The verdant province of Ateitia comprises one of the three territories that border the Ash Wastes. Together, these provinces form the geographic location known as the Edge of the Wastes.

The people of Ateitia live relatively simple lives, living in closely-knit tribal units that live off of hunting the local fauna and subsistence farming. Though their society is often ridiculed as primitive and barbaric by subjects from other provinces, few doubt the warrior prowess of Ateitians at war.

The warriors of Ateitia are shocking to see. They are few in number but without equal in combat. The strongest warriors cast aside the trappings of armor, putting their faith in their ancestors for protection. To the surprise of enemies, this tactic works surprisingly well, leading to many believing some other magic is at work or perhaps the ancestors of the Ateitia do reach in from beyond to protect their children.

Forming a barrier between the scorched land and the green mana rich lands beyond, the Mountains of dust get their name because winds forced through small cracks and crevices in their otherwise nearly impassable length race out into the scorched land with so much force that a continuous dust storm dominates the entire area. Its thought that in the 2nd planetary age, roughly 75,000,000,000 years ago, a moon fell from the sky, killing all the mana in the scorched land, which has no life, not even the false parody of life that animates the undead. Nothing, and we must put stress upon this, "NO-THING", grows or lives in the scorched land. It is an utterly barren, completely dead region, where the ground is cooked harder than fullplate and aside from the constant shriek of the Great storm, you won't here anything. Anywhere. Due to its remote location and lack of any resources or known valuable mineral deposits, the scorched land is one of the few places, in the world, that hasn't yet been mapped.

It was Lady Andrath of the Order of the Rat that led the Pyrathan Empire's first expedition into the kingdom of Seeldymir. Lady Andrath and her entourage were greeted with cordial respect by the Seeldymirian council, who were all to eager to demonstrate their skill and technique in the arts of transmutation and enchantment. Most awe-inspiring of all to behold were the Seeldymirian war golems, each as tall as ten men and imbued with the strength of fifty. King Erioch, once learning of the Seeldymirian's immense wealth and magical prowess, raised a vast army with the sole objective of subjugating their lands and people.

The conflict that followed, known as the Twenty Year's War, would grow into the bloodiest period of the century and become the basis for much of the violence that exists in the continent of Ortaisield today.

Twelve years ago Mithras the Demon Prince rose from his subterranean kingdom with his hosts of demons and undead. The infernal armies crashed against the bastions of the Valkyr. Only their superior technology and the bravery of their warriors allowed them to survive the onslaught. Mithras turned his surviving legions into the weaker kingdoms nearby, and now precariously holds one sixth of the land in the southern continent, most of it rendered worthless by more than a decade of war.

The King of Valkyr has put a bounty of one thousand electrum coins on the head of Mithras.

Beyond the sweltering halls of lava and the nearly impassible bedrock maze, lies the city of Deep Darkness. In the deepest part of the ground, the city of deep darkness was sealed up by the dwarves before they went extinct, and few ways to or from it remain open to the traveler. The city is in constant chaos, swarmed by bitterly feuding demons who can never kill each other thanks to the Iron God's curse, and the hapless souls of the dead who died between the end of the 3rd planetary age and the start of the 4th, when the Iron God and the Gray Goddess had their war. Priceless gems and valuable minerals are found here in abundance, but the demons often demand souls or life essences in trade for them. It is said among some that Soultrap crystals and vials of vampire's blood make up the demon's primary monetary units. But few know for sure, and demons aren't to be trusted, as they have often died horribly so many times that they have no sanity to speak of. As a result, they will say or do anything they please with no inhibition whatsoever, and the more powerful ones tend to be even more psychotic. The adventurers guide warns the hapless traveler who ends up there to GET OUT.

These devices, and other artifacts like them, are prime examples of Charid alchemielectrics. This artifact is essentially an automated spellcaster, capable of absorbing natural magic to power a built-in magical grid. This particular device is designed as a clairaudience projector, allowing communication across large distances without the use of heliographs, and in some cases similar units can communicate with the recently deceased.

Another of Fingus Corvald's sketches, 'The Iron God'. Fingus's notes tell us that the Iron God hasn't stirred in any way for so long that great heaps of dust and spiderweb have formed all over him, but goes on to say that the god wears 10 magic rings, 3 magic amulets, a full suit of armor, an imperishable cloak, and a crown made entirely of iron. The Iron god is so large that on cloudy days, the god's head and shoulders are obscured by clouds, and that on stormy knights passing travelers sometimes mistake his legs for castle towers. Fingus tells us that during his sketching of the god, the god moved one of his fingers once by chance, the brief, small movement unleashing a blast of lightning so powerful that, in fingus's words, "a hill became a hole welling with lava."

Though few formal reports and documents exist on him, the galaxy has come to accept the entity commonly referred to as the Space Clown. Different species across the galaxy have their own story; some say that he is the last of a race of an incredibly advanced people who live at the center of our galaxy, others claim that he is the last God who drifts through space tormented and alone. While the stories vary, some things about the Space Clown are the same no matter who you talk to; when he comes to your planet he floats just above orbit and starts doing a slap-stick comedy routine and people just start laughing at him. Doesn't matter if you can see him or not or if you're blind or deaf, doesn't matter if you're 100 miles under your planet or the most secluded parts of it, people can't resist the urge to look up at the sky and laugh.

You didn't hear it from me, but I think it's safe to assume that's what he lives off of, the laughter I mean. How it keeps him alive or if he's planning to do something with it I don't know, I just think it's friggin' creepy.

The "mire of serpents and darkness", Svortskoggore.

A breeding place of dragons as well as sea-monsters, Svortskoggore is a series of islands, shoals, and forest. There is a lake known as the lake of icy tears, where ghosts from all over the world are said to congregate once every 500 years, a spring which, when the Elf hero Kuldis Tar was slain there, expressed its grief, they say, by pouring an endless flow of blood afterward, finally, the forests (all of them) in the Svortskoggor region have trees which either breath putrid mist from themselves at dusk and dawn, or drip pestilent blood from their branch-tips at all times day or night. Frightening, strong undead are common there, and in some areas black smoke emits from scattered holes in the ground, making it dim twilight most of the time.

They have no ambiguation of race or gender, their only identifier being their robes wrought of black metal scales that seem to shift at their will. They are primarily assassins, although they seem to master any skill they pursue. Their goals are unclear and usually appear to contradict, although they most consistently appear whenever something of extreme importance occurs, always having a hand in shifts of age and era. Their leader is adept at most everything, but specializes as an assassin-telepath who wields a katana. The location of their base, if it exists at all, is impossible to determine, although most believe them to reside in the Sea of Wyrms. No one is eager to check, for obvious reasons.

"Every now an again, even a Pyrathian Knight should laugh at his own expense."

-Julion the Patriarch of Wit

An assembly of various troupes of performers, poets, and buffoons each one is lead by a ring master who styles him or herself in the nature of nobility even as none of them hold no such claims. As varied in their nature as they are their reputation all ring leaders are in accord to honor the name of Julion, a strange individual who's true nature is unknown even to the oldest troupes. Some speculate that Julion is some sort of spirit who presides and protects his loyal performers while other's claim that Julion is but a title for a troupe to obtain for it's ring leader.

As expressive as their performances are they are quit insular in regards to their nature and conflicting accounts abound, no doubt to protect their inmost secrets.

The scorched land isn't a desert, so both it and the ashe wastes can exist without being an overabundance of desert. The scorched land is more like a nuclear blast site. Everything is scorched and vitrified. Its the result of a moon falling from orbit and exploding at impact.

The Myran Republic is one of the dominant forces in the continent of Mainland.

Comprised of seven semi-independent provinces, the Myran Republic is ruled by an elected council of seven members, with each member chosen by the respective citizens of the province. Despite the overthrow of the old monarchy some decades ago, the the citizens of the realm are frequently referred to as "subjects" rather than citizens due to tradition.

The different provinces are detailed as follows-

Lady Suzerain was the commander of the Kendre army during the Battle of Sardis. Leading a force of 10,000 troops, Suzerain held the line at Zuril Keep against the largest N'Goroth warband ever seen since the Dawn of the Second Age.

Lead by Angrath the Black, the N'Goroth were relentless in their assault, and outnumbering their enemy more than tenfold.

The battle raged for many days and nights, and dead from both sides began to cover the ground before the attack was finally broken when Griffon cavalry assaulted the N'Goroth flank and slew Angrath in the process, causing the rest of the N'Goroth to rout and flee back to their homeland.

Many sailors tell a tale of the Wandering Island, a landmass that supposedly moves across the oceans of the world and is never found in the same place twice.

There is no apparent reason behind its appearances, it has provided shelter to starving crews and blocked the path of trade fleets. The only thing that the stories agree on is that something of great importance or personal value will be lost upon the island, never to be seen again, but something strange and unique will be found, as if given by the island in exchange.

Many ships on important missions or carrying valued items avoid uncharted islands for just this reason, while many would-be treasure hunters eagerly go ashore. Those foolish enough to go with empty pockets in hopes of cheating the island find that it's reach is not limited to the physical, and such men return broken and hollow, with an emptiness in their mind and soul...

Well the first thing to do is decide when the universe was created. I suspect the general history of the universe goes something like this.

>primordials create universe
>Several cosmic ages, each lasting millions of years, pass
>Primordials grow old and tired, giving birth to newer more human gods
>Newer gods create the planet the game takes place on, amongst others
>Several planetary ages pass, each lasting thousands of years
>Intelligent life appears
>Several planetary ages pass, each lasting thousands of years
>Civilization appears
>A few more planetary ages pass
>Its now the present

The world contains five major landmasses, each of which is inhabited by at least one or more sentient races.

The continent of Mainland (sometimes refered to as "The Southern Continent"), true to its name, is the largest of the landmasses, and is home to the Myran Republic, the Kingdom of Valkyr, the Aldmathi Dominion, and many other nations. The climate is as varied as its inhabitants, and blistering deserts, sweltering jungles, and freezing mountains are some of the many locations native to Mainland. Once, vast swathes of the continent was under the dominion of the elves; now, only the ruins of their once magnificent civilization are present.

Every troupe under the banner of Wit acts very much in accord to it's own whims with some choosing to do performances or services based on where they ply their trade..

The Sirens of Beytur work the taverns singing songs and, for a certain price, offer companionship to the lonely sailors who ply the Sea of Tears and work to haul the goods imported into her harbours. Known for their deep blue robes and shaven heads, their beauty can often be otherworldly given the strange, ritualistic tattoos that they give to initiates into their troupe. At once, austere and ascetic they can be equally vocal and jolly which disarms the concerns of those put off by their sense of fashion.

While some seek them for pleasure other's seek them for matters far more esoteric as they are knowledgable of the things that lay in the depths of the sea of tears and when gathered together can be seen performing rites on the beaches at dusk.

The Whisper of Hours, a scholarly group of playwrights who ply their trade in the Pyrathian city of Sarth. Known to dress in black and red robes they also don whatever costume suits the roles they play for epics written by and performed by their peers, typically focused on whatever historical facts they unearth in Libraries and on their solitary travels.

On top of blending their unique sense of humor and world view into their performances they are also known as sooth-sayers who's deep appreciation for history has allowed them a limited ability to predict a person's future to a degree. Such sessions are always done in private and performed as a play with silence of the nature of the play being the only other payment needed to be told one's fortune.

Most of their plays tend to be historical reproductions. They travel all parts of the world to collect whatever information they can on a particular subject of interest and, when satisfied, pen their plays and present it to their brothers and sisters for review.

Some of their plays includes the epic of a messenger during the Battle of Sardis who, supposedly, managed to cling to life just long enough to deliver a seal message to Lady Suzerain even as he was pursued by N'Goroth outriders. The play details his life up to that moment.

The Whispers in particular take interest in moments swept by the grand nature of historical events.

>>

As much as any other scholar would. A big part of their group's identity comes from the fact that they go and seek out this sort of knowledge for the sake of their art. No doubt a wizened member has a journal or two stashed away detailing his or her romp through ancient cyclopean ruins here or there. They are terribly defensive with their knowledge fearing others would steal and claim it for themselves. What little they tell they tell through their plays.

The Last one for the night from me based off of whoever made >>24726592

Those who laugh at night, a lengthy title for a group of assassin buffons who's only audience are the victims they are sent to kill. Furtive and always out of sight, TwLaN are by no means simple butcher's who kill for gold and are particular about the contracts they take as their kills are often spectacles in and of themselves.

One noted performance was the death of a Seeldyrmirian council Rashul who was found stabbed to death in his chambers with his daughter atop his corpse dirtied in his blood. It was later found that over the years her mind was slowly being poisoned by an unknown assilant thought to have disguised himself as a servant and supposedly for the death of a nobleman's daughter Valkyir.

When such events occur the populace tends to be weary of the Court of Wit but other troupes will swear them off as simple killers with no association to themselves of their founder Julion.

Julion himself has never been heard or recorded to have said anything in regard to them and apparently makes no effort to refute them.

It is well known by travellers and explorers that one should never seek refuge in ancient temples or shrines. When a man prays or meditates in order to shed his sins in the name of his diety, or purge his soul of evil, that taint does not simply vanish. Over decades, sometimes centuries, the evils cast off by these repentant men and women seep into the stone, the glass, the timber, even the air itself, eventually coalescing into vile spectres which bear a grudge against anybody who holds a good heart, or a pure soul.

There are rumours that the same applies to the worshipping grounds of those dieties of bloodlust and evil, the lost purity of their followers forming into spectres which possess nothing but goodness. If this is true, it means that one of the safest places one could rest, if one finds themselves lost in the wilderness, is an ancient shrine used for blood sacrifice or dark worship, contrary to what any sane adventurer would assume.

I guess I couldn't stay away, and felt inspired again and wanted to add a bit to the Siren's entry.

The sailor's of Berytus are superstitious and with good reason as the Sea of Tears is said to be haunt of spirits who favors are oft curried by the presence of a Siren.

Sometimes for no other reason than to feel the wind and wave at her cheek a Siren will beg passage on a ship. While some who refuse them suffer no ills others have been reported to have met with strange accidents; experienced navigators suddenly loosing their way, the ship's stores fouled by rodents and, most dreaded of all.a chance encounter with a freak storm known as the Demon's Sigh, a tropical depression said to sometimes to reveal the form of an anguished woman in the clouds.

Even still with a Siren present accidents happen so foreigners are uncovinced of their ability to ward danger and most just assume the Sirens are the cause but a Berytus man of the sea would be loath to take that chance.

A little known aspect of the culture of the Orcs of Hellborn Keep is the deeply conservative nature of their women. Typically their women are swathed in thick veils drapped over their heads and suspended from the horns of Bull Mirrodows carved with intricate patterns and woven into their hair. Many such headdresses are passed down from mother to daughter in this fashion and used as a symbol of strength as the horns are quite heavy.

Here pictured is a print from the Myrdan artist Salinda who convinced a Orc warrior woman to loose her battle veils.

"Even in the very ancient time when Chamso-Tho was inhabited, dragons were known. However the people there appear to have had some understanding with Dragons, as throughout the cities history, there were no deaths attributed to dragons, and no dragon attacks of any kind. Sages debate the meaning of this fact." - Encyclopedia of Relics, Myths, and Magic, Lord Sir Davis Chesch

"...the ironwood berry is also involved in the spring time traditions of many of the villages of northern Voria. One of the more interesting annual traditions that I found on my travels was the New Moon Night Pick of the village of Kerth. On the night of the 3rd new moon of the year all the villages women of certain age would venture out into the surrounding woods to pick the ironwood berries by starlight. This tradition is said to bring good luck to the years harvest and ward off sickness. If the current prosperity of Kerth is any indicator perhaps there is some truth to this superstition."

Whenever death reaps many lives at once, they are found. Crawling over the floor and over walls on spindly limbs in an unnaturally smooth motion. It is not known what they are, how they work, how they eat or what their purpose is, where they go or where they come from.

What is known, is that if anyone touches one or follows one for too long, they vanish together in a flash of shadow, and the death toll must be revised.

Alright this looks like some fun shit..

"The Silent Jester is a recurring sighting the Pyrathian city of Sarth. Once a court fool of an unspecified king, the man who would be the Silent Jester was obsessed with discovering the 'perfect joke'. The increasingly bizarre and lethal stunts caused by the Jester began to worry several nobles at court and a plot was hatched.

The night before his final performance, the one where he would finally unveil his 'perfect joke', the Jester was brutally murdered by the nobles, butchered with a dagger and thrown into the sewers to rot.

But that was not the end of it. Several years later many of those who had been part of the plot were found butchered in elaborate and ironic ways. The gluttonous Lord Francis was gutted with hot mince pies shoved into where his entrails used to inhabit. The greedy Lord Wilhelm had a pot of hot, melted gold poured on his head. The lecherous old Lord Stephan had choked to death on his own severed cock.

And witnesses reported at every crime scene a Jester, wielding a bloody knife with eyes glowing with otherworldly energy, smelling of sewers and rot. The Silent Jester, as the killer became known as, continued its grizzly murders until every noble who had plotted the demise of the Jester was dead.

Sightings of the Silent Jester continue to this day, many years after the final noble, the sadistic Lord Gregor, was found tortured to death. What it wants, if anything, is a mystery, but its appearance still inspires dread in those who see it.

"Skinrot - An illness carried by some forms of undead and by some unclean animals, skinrot is treated by lancing the boils of the patient (speckled face) with a clean razor, then allowing the fluids to excrete, washing them down with a flask of saltwater. When that is done, the patient must bathe in water mixed with a tincture of Sacro plant, Fireberry, and holyroot 2 times a day, once at dawn and once at dusk. If the illness has not abated in one weeks time, the patient must return to the doctor and seek further consultation. As onerous as life often becomes in The Hives, many of its residents argue that winter is the greater of the two evils.

The ramshackle and poorly-insulated homes are no defense from the harsh blizzards that often tear through the region in winter, and food becomes even scarcer than before as soil freezes over and the native wildlife retreats into hiding. Many of Scheold's subjects protest against the urban eyesore that covers much of the province, but Tetrach Lyran and his supporters greatly resist any attempts at change.

So I'm thinking the first thing we should do is place the planet, any moons, and decide what sort of star the planet orbits. Once thats done we can place continents in chosen areas and then delegate locations to each continent.
>>
>>24739626
>So I'm thinking the first thing we should do is place the planet

I believe it was stated upthread it was the 4th planet from the sun. As for the number of moons and sort of star, I'm no astronomer so I just stick with Earth standards when creating this stuff.
>>
>>24739626
>place the planet

There seems to be a lot of cold areas, so far away enough from a sun, or a smaller, colder sun, to facilitate the climates, but close enough to have a liquid sea.

How about two moons with highly magnetic content, and move the roving islands because of their highly magnetic rock/soil content.

Just a thought.
>>
>>24739688
Perhaps the sun is small and blue? As for the roving islands, that sounds simple enough to me.

I've seen quite a few references to hot deserts as well though. Most of the cold areas discussed were described as being in the mountains, so I think that should mesh fine.

Better explanations for the Wandering Island:

>It's actually a massive chunk of pumice; the whole island floats and is carried along by currents.

>It's actually just dirt and trees over the hard shell of a fuckhuge sea creature, which swims around

>It's a really, really old Elven city-ship that's so crumbled and covered with dirt, debris, biomass, and lichen that it is no longer obviously artificial. The engines still work, though.

>Magic is the art of bending reality to one's will- but spacetime can only be folded so much before it rips. The elves's mastery of magic and technology became so great that reality simply rejected them, swallowing them up and folding over them like an oyster covering an irritating nub of grit with nacre to form a pearl. The network of planes and pocket worlds that makes up the cosmology of reality today did not always exist- these are the remnants of that vast quiet upheaval, of reality itself rebelling- and the demons that inhabit them are the warped descendants of the chaotic, dying years of the Elvish Fall.

Kuldis Tar - Historical, died several centuries before the elvish fall. Few likenesses of him remain. He killed the Dragon Draedan. Records are unclear but draedan was either a flying or sea dragon. The elvish word for 'sky' is similar to the word for 'sea', so records sometimes say Draedan lived in the sea or that he flew in the sky.

Lord Sir Davis Chesch - Historical, wrote a series of books of history, geography, and anthropology. He formalized the science of Anthropology.

Targon Zathos - A lich, previously a professor at the magic academy

Javis Flemf - A mercenary healer who could appear in the present

St Jurchen - Wrote a famous textbook about medicines that is still widely used. Lived during the elvish fall, but was human.

Fingus Corvald - Historical, wrote the 25 volume 'travels to distant places'

Also: Iron God - One of the earliest gods in existence. He no longer has any formalized religion and few of his temples survive, the few that do being archaic ruins.
>>
>>24740676
Cecily Reisert is a traitor to the Kingdom of Valkyr, having stolen an important flying warship from the King's fleet.

Also, if you're referring to 'Ragasa, Queen of Pirates' as 'Princeps of Tears' she's affiliated to Berytus.

So we have two votes for these:

>The amount of mana in the world dropped so precipitously low that the magic-based technologies and phantasmagoric cities of the elves practically ceased to exist, let alone function. The elves frantically attempted to move to a solely-mechanical civilization, but they died out in the collapse as the loss of mana robbed them of their natural gifts and powers. >Either that or their creations turned on them for being horrible, immoral bastards and killed each other off in some kind of mutual destruction war.

Oh my, /tg/ must really like this one for it to have persisted so long. Here's some more lore for the Court of Wit if anyone's interested.

As Troupe's come and go it is very difficult to get exact details as to who exactly the Patriarch Julion is or when exactly he formed the Court of Wit to begin with. The Whisper's, being one of the historically oldest troupes second only to the Sirens of Berytus, have noted that their history as depicted in the proformance A Life of Wandering has the Troupe's founding Ring Master Miradal having a chance meeting with Julion when his family visited Seeldimyr for business.

A scion of a prominent trade baron, the young heir met a similar youth who talked only of the beauty and mystery of the scorched lands and what history lays silent within them. For whatever reason this struck a court in the young man's heart and one night he left his father's mansion and set out to explore the world, returning only after years in rags, his back bent with scrolls and a dire need to show all the wonders he'd experienced.

This of course was 600 years ago.

In all, Julion is actually a shape shifting god who goes and inspires people to whatever form of creativity suits them and causes them to form groups based on this. Julion doesn't care what the art is only so long as art is done.
