You are Ssen, a Lamia raised by a human Paladin who adopted you after killing the ones who birthed you. You are grown now, and Father has passed on. After a great deal of work, you have become a Paladin like your Father, and now take up his duties.

You are accompanied by your best friend from childhood, the insect druid Tricia; Mage, a magic user who ran away from his family of cannibal raiders known as the Ghouls (Yes, his name is Mage. It was his idea); Persephone, a 22-year old thief/ex-guerllia fighter (She goes by Peri), and Mari, a 13-year old prodigy scholar/now sniper, who has her mind and soul trapped within Peri's body; and Lea, a deeply religious musician/martial artist, trained by her father, a famous trainer for arena fighters, she's covered from her mouth down in bandages to hide the horrific state her body has become thanks to the 'cures' that saved her from cancer.

Your journey continues...

You, the Dawnchasers, Isen, Tara, and the mer girl Dana went to confront Adahn and the mer army he was leading.

You managed to make his guise slip, and exposed to the mer army that the 'Fallen Lightbringer' wasn't some great pillar of strength, but rather just a little boy hiding behind some powerful magic. That is not strength that the mer respect, and so they deserted him and went back to Coral Gate.

Adahn fought you. Perhaps he wanted to hurt the person he thought ruined his life, maybe he was too far gone into the Dramatae's manipulations to think rationally, or it could have been he just wanted his nightmare of a life to end. Either way, you defeated him, and spared the poor boy's life.

On return to Stone Hall, you found the ship, Leviathan, was slightly on fire and had a deck covered with blood. Paladin Avery had discovered that the ship had been taken over by a Passion and his Blank minions. Now he was busy using his Red Occuli to purge the ship. But, now the Leviathan now belonged to Stone Hall, not Citadel.

You have stopped the Dramatae's plans for Adhan, the Leviathan, and the Mer. A major victory, that no doubt further disrupted the Kingdom's destiny as dictated by the Dramatae and the Array. But those masked bastards got the last laugh. You have received a message that the Fey Court has sacked First Wood with a monster-filled army...and your uncle, Paladin Graves, has been captured.
>>
Alright, we can't leave the job half finished. Lets get a ship and head back to Coral. Plus our overland transport is there.

I hope our fears were unfounded and they weren't attacked while we headed to Stone Hall.
>>
Welcome back echo!

I vote we take time tonight to consult with avery on what we're going to do about first wood.

Then let's have a dinner with granny and appreciate the kids one last time.

Then we move on coral to reclaim our horse, then white tree using horse transit.
>>
>>24790100
coral is next, yes, but maybe we can get some support from stone hall, or at least some additional information about the white tree problem.
>>
>>24790100
Alright, it's easy for you to get a loaner wagon and horse. (Even though the wagon isn't as comfortable for you as the one that you left back at Coral Grate.) You're the Paladin Serpent, and your promise to return it is taken as gold...along with the five gold that you hand over.

Dana wishes to stay at the Lighthouse, since overland travel isn't too healthy for her. She can survive for a decent while out of water, but she prefers to be near it at all times.

Mage hastes the horse. He's actually gotten used to this spell, so he can pull it off with little difficulty.

It'll still take three days to get there, however. Three days that pass with little incident. You have an unfortunate feeling that now that the Dramatae have an incident, they're on the other side of the kingdom, pulling the strings once more.

Mage sighs as he sits next to you as you make camp on the second night. He's got his to-do book and is flipping through it. "I don't even remember why I had to look into half of these things." He says. "At least the Iron Books cover a lot of this now."
>>
So, what kinds of monsters did they use?

This is basically me asking for a gutpunch, since whatever the answer, it's gonna be terrible.

>>
>>24790383
>>24790340
Don't worry! The ship plan didn't work because the currents were going north, and it would have been slower to go south.

This is the retroactive truth.

"Just think of most of that book as brainstorming instead of a must-do list. Only work on what catches your interest. Most of it was shooting out ideas to solve the latest disaster. Which we solved then otherwise."

"True." Mage says ripping out a page. "This was devoted to the Lightbringers...though there might be new ones soon, wont there?"

You grunt and roll your eyes. "Probably. I've been thinking of starting a journal to keep track of all the crazy plots we have. It would help with things like this.

"Sorry for giving you so many projects, by the way. There's no real need to hurry any of them, I just love giving you more ideas."

He smiles at you. "It's nice to be wanted." He sighs and looks at his book. "I don't if it's gonna work with Sophie. I mean, she's great and we can talk about magic...but that's about it." He says. "Also she wants a family." He shakes his head. "That's not me. Not yet at least." He groans and sits back. "But I don't think I can just calmly walk out of this thing with her with polite goodbyes. You know, this was much easier with the ghouls. You wanted to split up, someone just stabbed the other and served them up as a stew to their new beau. It was considered very romantic."
>>
>>24790514
"Well, you could always tell her to find a new love, since you're off to go a-dying in the wars. That pretty much assures she'd be married happily by the time you get back so you can regret your decision, if I know anything about how these stories go.

In short, you probably shouldn't listen to me for romantic advice. Just... putting that out there."
>>
>>24790514
I have a feeling that wouldn't go over well with her dad.

I talked to Tricia about this you know? Turns out theres a way for her ot have my child. It wouldn't be right for me to not let her know.

Talk to her. See if shes willing to wait for you to be ready, knowing that you might never be. That way she knows where you are coming from.
>>
>>24790514
Is there anything in ghoul romance that would be appealing to other species?
>>
>>24790701
they could have gone hunting together? That's acceptably romantic. Except when the hunt is for the most dangerous game, but yeah.
>>
>>24790758
If this quest has taught me anything, it is that humans are not the most dangerous game.

It's probably dragons or one of the results of their uncontrolable laibidos.
>>
>>24790802
... pity most of the highly dangerous stuff is extinct or near it. Leviathans, Greater Troll, Rocs, Dragons. All kinda hard to come by.

"In short, you probably shouldn't listen to me for romantic advice. Just... putting that out there."

"Wasn't that a Citadel story?" He smirks.

"Well, I know the eating thing wouldn't go over well with Gregory." You say. "But at least talk to her."

"Yeah, yeah...just be ready for explosions when that happens." He sighs and goes back to his book. "I wish we had more information other than rumors about the Fey Court attack."

It's true. The only official missive that you got was the one Avery received just saying that there was an attack, the Occuli were forced to retreat. Apart from that, it's all be contradicting rumors. They had everything from goblins, to lamia, to Dragons, to Old Trolls and back again. The leader was a man/woman/monster/Queen Mab/King Oberon having betrayed the Council/The Lost Elf Princess/A Forgotten Elf Prince...on and on and on. Useless people spreading stories and fear.

You go to sleep, and your dreams are the usual fractured mess they've always been.

The next day you're back up and riding for Coral Gate. Once more, it is mercifully quiet, which could be good or bad...but you finally arrive that the bluffs.

You look around for where you left Lightmare and the wagon.

Lightmare:

Have eaten at least three dozen passions, blanks, elves, and mermen.
>>
>>24790906
Ah crap. Well, you found the Wagon. It's fine, if a little worn for spending so much time exposed to the elements, right next to the ocean.

Lightmare's nowhere to be seen though, and his bridle has been chewed through. Still no signs of a struggle or a fight, so it looks like your horse just took off.

Damnit.
>>
See if Tricia's bugs can't find him. Or if we can use our vaunted tracking skills (hah) to find him. If not we'll head down to the city.

"Alright, Tricia, see if we can't talk our horse out of tending its resignation to us." You say.

"Gotcha." Tricia says. A small of butterflies come out of her sleeves. Their wings are the same color as her hair. "Go." She says to them and they scatter.

You go looking for yourself, searching for a magic trail, scorched grass, or a large amount of blood and dead things, knowing Lightmare.

"Have fun with the horse, Lea. I'll give you guys a call if there's any trouble with the merthings." You say as you dive into the water.

You swim to the Manor House. There's no signs of fire from within. It's hard to tell if there's been damage or not. The place is a mouldering wreck.

Also, you don't see any sign of the mer army. Which is disconcerting.

You go into the Manor house. You knock on the door...no answer.

You force open the door and look around the room. It's empty. More than that actually, it looks like it's been empty for an extended amount of time. The feast table has a thick layer of dust on it. There's no signs of comfortable couches and seats of ruined furniture, no sign of people having water dumped on them. Nothing.

You make your way into Trevor's war room. There's nothing. No war map, no fresh books, no piles of crabs and discarded crab shells. The place is a room that has never been used in years...or at least looks like it.
>>
>>24791404

Check the sunken cathedral!

thats familiar. too familiar. Remember Robin? And now that we know the Fey Court was co-opted by the Dramatae this might be the same thing. Lets try to search out clues.

If we find nothing we should head to the Cathedral.
>>
>>24791404
Wipe some dust with your finger, as is classic to do in such situations. Possibly mutter "How on earth...".

Suggest almost like they were never there. Remember it's been only two three days max. No way good layer of dust to from.

1. leave.

2. pour dust everywhere before you go.

3. use OCD powers to ensure it's uniform.

There could be some sort of magical illusion at work here. Maybe the Mer have some spellcasters amongst them, or the Dramatae decided to make a stop here during the battle.
>>
>>24791404
Check the whole place out, then check the cathedral.

I realize my instructions were a very unspecific "investigate further".
>>
>>24791462
"How on earth...?" You mutter. You take a deep breath and look around with your clear eyelids open. This isn't an illusion. The dust is real, and there's nothing here that's pretending that it's something that it isn't...but...you without a doubt see magical traces everywhere, and under the table a small little chip of crab shell.

You hold up some of the dust and taste/smell it. Ah hah...this isn't dust...well it is...but it's also powered crab shell, wood, and a lot of other debris that's been reduced to a powder.

Hello, what's that? The hinge on the door the faceplate that's screwed into the wall is missing two screws and the remaining bolt is painted white...and someone's carved a crude nine point star around it. You pull out the screw and flip the face pate away. Someone's carved a hole into the wall and stuck a rolled up note in there. Only three people you know who are that clever in skullduggery and would but the Caligo Clarus logo on it. You unroll the scroll.
- - -
This message is for Paladin Ssen of the Caligo Clarus.

I'm sorry. I didn't have a choice. The Agony Masks are too strong, but once we've done what they want us to, we have a little leeway.

Robin's still at Grove. Prisoner. Same as me and Ryan.

The old man was taken and Masked. They thought he would be useful when they 'repair' the Paladin order.

The Salt Queens are ours. Don't know what Ryan's being forced to do to the Mer, but I know there's an ambush planned if they turn back.

Seeing as we don't hear the Leviathan exploding...I think you've handled it. That'll piss them off. They were still counting on the False Lightbringer.

Don't come to the Grove. Not yet. It's a trap. You need a Woodsman's Compass. It's like the Miner Compass you wanted us to get. Conclave in White Tree has one...at least they hired us to procure one for them a while ago. Should still be there. You come in without it, they'll trap you in a Fey Wood Loop and leave you to rot.

Help us.

You get back up the bluffs, as quickly as possible.

"Find something?" Tricia asks.

"We have to move, up the Coast. Now!" You snap.

"Huh?" Peri asks as you shove the letter into her chest as you get into the old wagon. "What's the ru-oh...oh crap!" Peri/Mari says as they read the note. "Mage, haste the horse. Lea will ride with you. Tricia, take Lightmare."

"Ssen, get me that map of the coastline." She asks. as the horses take off. "See if we can figure out where they might possibly be."
>>
I say we rescue robin.

Then, when he asks "How ever can I thank you!" or says "I'll owe you one" or something like that, say

"Oh yeah, you reminded me" and give him the 2,500 gold.

Paladins will rescue you from a mind control army to repay their debts.

>>
Yep. Time for maps and charts.

I have no idea what oceanic maps or charts look like, fuck.
>>
Well, it's pretty simple what we have to do.

Backtrace the "red tide" they said they were taking, find any points particularly close to land or particularly narrow, investigate those.
>>
>>24792150
I thought any of them work work, except for the Passions.
>>
>>24792132
Alright...you sailed up the coast. You didn't see any more boats missing from Coral Gate. So that means they would have had to have launched at some point between Coral Gate and Stone Hall. That or their doing something from the coast.

That leaves three places.

A little ways north of the Sound where you crashed. The water's smooth and deep enough there...but they'd have to get through the rapids.

There's a fishing village. It's a bit out of the way though, not to mention people would notice them.

Finally there's a little cove that's a natural harbor. Out of the way, deep water, quick launching...but the place is a breeding/feeding/spawning ground for sharks. They'd not take kindly to visitors.
>>
>>24792299
well, if it was ME, I'd pick the shark one.

But what would an elfish rogue pick? Probably the fishing village, there's places to lie low there, and it's more his habitat.

Unless someone can think of a way to search multiples.

Perhaps we should not include the crits override. Or require a double-crit
>>
>>24791236
This is one of the many reasons I'd argue against changing the dice system permanently, though it's an interesting experiment. On average, while a best-of-three system does mean we're more likely to succeed (though that screws with all the previous DCs), it also means we're significantly more likely to either crit *or* critfail.
>>
>>24792397
>>24792336

"Sharks?" You suggest.

"Maybe, but...well, it's obvious that they have SOME free will." She taps her fingers on the map. "Do we know anything about Ryan other than his little crazed revolutionary act?"

"If Jessi was smart enough to make the whole place look abandoned, then it's obvious that they're bringing their A game to this." Tricia shouts.

"Right...alriight, what do we know about Robin's crew and their tactics..." She nods. "Actually...I think you might be right." She looks up at you. "Why risk boats when you have a simpler way to scatter a group of mer and make them ripe for collection?" She points at the map. "Send the sharks out, scatter them. This place is filled with sandbanks." She scratches her head. "Of course, I'm trying to make it fit the area." She shakes her head. "I'm sure I can make up a good reason for the other two."
>>
>>24792554
"Well, the reason for the fishing village is they're more at home somewhere like that. I can't really think of a reason for them to go to the rapids."

"Which means they're at the rapids."
>>
>>24792554
>"I'm sure I can make up a good reason for the other two."
Do tell.
>>
>>24792536
Or just go back to the old system which worked fine really.
>>
>>24792505
I still support a best of 3 system. Averaging however is just plain bad... you almost always average out. And as pointed out you have a 3x chance to crit.

>>24792554
The village has boats. Which I doubt they can carry with them. The rapids has no clear advantages beyond the fact that its a choke point.
>>
>>24792576
It would be very hard for them to capture the merfolk if they broke away in the rapids or out in the deep water beyond.
>>
>>24792554
"The rapids would probably be the best place if they wanted to destroy the Mer instead of capturing them, at least the ones without gills."

"No idea what advantage the village has as an ambush spot though."
>>
>>24792584
"Do tell."

"The fishing village means they can trick the villagers into helping them. Plus it's easier to take ships that are already there. They're easier to move than the sharks, but sharks can't be witnesses.

As for the rapids...if they get through them, then it's the ultimate ambush. There's nothing the Mer can do thanks to the currents in that area. They just get slammed right into what's waiting."

Mari shakes her head. "Ugh, too many options with too little time."
>>
I get the feeling we're going to have to pretty much just guess here.

There's probably some really obscure sentence somewhere in one of the past 45 threads which gives some hint as to which one Ryan would be at, but I'll be fucked if I can remember it.
>>
>>24792716
Honestly if we were smarter we could probably just figure all of this out. As it stands, we're on a guess.

Which are we closest to?
>>
>>24792737
You'd get to the Sharks the fastest. The Sound the longest.
>>
The only thing I can remember about Ryan aside from his revolutionary act is that he's part of the Coins guild, but I really don't see how that helps narrow it down.

We know next to nothing about the guy.
>>
>>24792716
Maybe the whole revolutionary thing he has? I mean rallying people to cause to attack the Mer might be something he would do. I don't know. It's hard to try and second guess stuff. Sharks just seem like the answer.

Question would be could we go Sharks -> Village in time, if sharks be wrong.
>>
>>24792752
Are the locations conveniently arranged so that we can swing by each in turn?
>>
>>24792683
I still say sharks... I wonder if we could ride several. That way we could use them to investigate the rapids.
>>
>>24792785
Pity none of us aren't actually a druid.
>>
>>24792785
Best idea? Or best idea.

I'd say we split the party into two, have one group investigate one area, the other group investigate the second, and we all meet up in the third location.

>>
>>24792785

No, we harness them together and use them like a chariot.
>>
>>24792633
Best of three is also kind of shit. It would give us a 90% chance to roll above 10. We'd basically always succeed instead of always being average.

If we do this, each group should have a flare. We have extras.

Tricia waves. "I can send some of...me...down the way. I don't think I can be in more than one place at once." She says. "Where do you want me to go?"

Probably, they're along the coast.

I think it's sharks. On the off chance it's not sharks, I suppose check the village. It really worries me when you split up like that, though. Don't stress anything."
>>
>>24792850
I say have Tricia check the rapids, its the longest trip and its better to get an idea whether they are there or not first.

We should head to the sharks and do a quick sweep then onto the village.
>>
>>24792850
I think "don't split the party" also applies even more strongly to "don't split a party member".
>>
>>24792934
This is where Tricia shines. We can't put her to the side just because we're worried about her safety. Shes worth more then that.
>>

Check the furthest location and work your way back, and we'll check the closest and work forward.

"Go all the way up to the Rapids. Then work your way back." You say. "And be careful...it worries me when you split up like that."

"I know. I know." She says. A couple of dragonflies break off from her and take off.

"Are you going to be okay, fighting Ryan and Jessi or Robin?" Lea says. "They are our friends."
>>
>>24792984
Not saying she shouldn't do it, but these new abilities are a major unknown, and she never did have that talk with Granny. In particular, she doesn't know how to replenish then yet. She should be careful, and not send more of herself than she can afford to lose.

"We shouldn't have to kill them. Just take the masks off."
>>

I think that's what the Dramatae is counting on. Let's see if we can do this non-lethaly.

>>24793042
"We don't have to kill them, just beat them into unconsciousness. Because we care about them. Plausible deniability for their bosses and all that."
>>
>>24793042
Not really. But we can't let them be slaves to the Dramatae either. So we'll fight them and free them as soon as possible. I fought for Adahn. I'll fight even harder for them.
>>
>>24793042
I'll manage. We have a lot more options for nonlethal combat now, and unlike half the people we don't kill, they actually want saving.
>>
>>24793042
"We all do what we must. If possible we should, no, we need to capture them. We all know they wont just lay down and give up without a fight."
>>
>>24793042
"I'd rather not hurt them, but if it's a choice between roughing them up to get the masks off, and leaving them at the Dramatae's mercy, I know what I'll choose."

>>24793087
"Not really. But, that's what the Dramatae are counting on. We can't let them be slaves to those masked bastards. So we'll fight them and free them as soon as possible. I fought for Adahn. I'll fight even harder for them.

"Anyway, we shouldn't have to kill them. Just take the masks off. If it's a choice between roughing them up to get the masks off, and leaving them at the Dramatae's mercy, I know what I'll choose."

Lea nods. "Robin will probably charge us out the nose for the medical bills."

"What exactly can the Dramate do with a load of Mer?" Peri asks. "There's not that many towns along rivers, and Stone Hall has the Leviathan now."
>>
>>24793042
"Well there is always this *Black Venom mouth* and Beacon's Light, we have quite a few nonlethal methods of subduing people."

"It also helps that they want us to rescue them, unlike many of the others we have encountered."
>>
After these messages, we'll be right back. Have to cook Mother's Day dinner.
>>
>>24793200
>cooking dinner
Oh man, good luck echo. That usually takes me like two hours.
>>
>>24793157
Well if they want to make the threat real and since Leviathan is in our hands they could send the Mer to Citadel itself. Rally all the people against the monster threat. Then have their new Lightbringer head that army in glorious battle against the monstrous armies of the Mer and Fey.

That or they want them for the access to whatever is in the Mer's brains.
>>
>>24793157
>what exactly can the dramatae do with a load of mer?

"The same thing that the old one suggesting doing with them. Serving them properly prepared. They plan to ambush and possibly kill the deserters, which would be a treasure trove of ingredients for who knows what poisons, potions, and tinctures.

Either that or attack the phoenix empire."
>>
>>24793293
this also has the effect of placing the blame on Stone Hall. If we didn't have it it'd have been there to protect Citadel.
>>
>>24793346
>>24793293
perhaps we'll move the leviathan to citadel once we stop this mer bullcrap.

Also, those poor poor elves. They were leaving little clues for us? Don't they know how blind we can be?
>>
>>24793158
too bad black venom works... variably.

It's kinda dangerous, if we accidentally give them too much. Same with all nonlethals.
>>
>>24793327

Speaking of Old One's advice, we do need to look into that. As awful as it is, we've run into more than a few dead Met, and we do need a way to protect our minds.
>>
>>24794036
If they're citadel corrupt it probably won't work... and harvesting sentients is definately on the wrong side of the moral grey-zone.
>>
>>24794036
>>24794053
what I'm worried about is that's exactly what the dramatae's "plan B". was, if the mers failed.
>>
>>24794053

Old One did not suggest that the corruption mattered for this. And in any case, I'd never suggest killing them for that purpose. There's nothing wrong with using those already dead, though. Or, we could probably get what we need voluntarily, for instance from Dana, if she's not too creeped out by it.
>>
On the bright side, they didn't plan for us to succeed here.

Which means they didn't plan on us having stone hall OR the leviathan.

which means we can use those elements to fuck them.
>>
>>24794280
They also didn't plan for us to be forewarned about the ambush, so thats another thing in our favor.
>>
>>24794300
well, to be fair, this might be post-warned.

The ambush could have already happened.
>>
>>24794314
I doubt it
>>
>>24794314
You arrive at the Shark Cove. You hear sounds of combat and hear the splashing of water. Crap it looks like the ambush has already started. You can see a lot of froth in the water as a group of mer are dealing with a school of sharks, and you can see robed figures with nets accompanied by magic users.

They cast the net, mer goes into the net, magic use casts a spell and the Mer is either gone to who knows where, or it struggles and fights...and ends up covered in white scales for all of it's troubles.

"Come on!" Peri says. "We go down there, and Mage and I can start shooting at the bastards. Then you'll have to dodge the sh-"

"Hold it!" Tricia says. "Oh, shit! They're doing it again!"

"What?" Mage says.

"I'm at the village. Since it was on the way..." She says. "They're there too...or have been there at least. I see a lot of sunk boats and dead people...fuck...and I don't see anyone but blanks."

Peri scans the scene before them. "I only see Blanks too."

Hmmm. Mage said once that if he overdid the Haste spell on an animal, it would basically explode. Could he do that intentionally, preferably without any chance of accidentally just hasting them?
>>
>>24794575
"Tricia, tell your friends to keep going; if this and the village are a distraction, we need to know that."

There are three mages on the sandbank and three net men. Mage, Mari, and you can reach them with your ranged weapons...but if you want to go to close combat, you'll have to risk going through the bloody water and the sharks are going berserk at this point.

The white isn't that fast-acting, and the clear doesn't seem like it would enhance killing power enough to help (plus we'd have to be really careful with the clear to avoid damaging the arrows). Plus we wouldn't mind some interrogation later.

Rolled 4, 9, 11 = 24

For the record, Tricia says that the village has already seen its action. The blanks are just cleaning up. These are the last of the Mer that managed to get past any other attacks they had experienced earlier.

This is going to be hard now. There are COMPETENT people behind the planning. You gotta save the trio, fast.

You drip the clear onto your arrow heads.

Mari aims at one of the Mages and fire.

There's about five sharks being actively aggressive. Mage takes a deep breath and tries to subdue as many of them as possible.

Tricia takes off her hat and chants.

Mage makes two of the creatures int he water fall asleep...two Mer.

Mari's shot is dead on into the Mage's skull. All three mages are down for the count.

Tricia's still got the bugs on the hunter she was pestering as well. He's on the ground screaming and bleeding as the flies are now on the inside of his mask.

One of the hunter's crossbows breaks. But the other one nails you in the side.

Mage causes the two sharks to get droopy. The mer dispatch them.

Tricia's swarm suddenly breaks off from the man on the ground and then they all rush up to her, and up her sleeves. Tricia's eyes fly open and she drops to the ground. Then she vomits up a cloud of flies.

"Ughhh...don't...don't let me do that again..." She groans.

The hunter on the ground managed to pull himself up, long enough for the angry mer to grab him and drag him off into the water, he doesn't even have time to scream.

The last blank rips off his mask and throws his hands up. "I surrender! I surrender!" He screams. "Don't let them kill me! I surrender!"

Using an average-based system, again having 1s and 20s cancel, and taking any 1 or 20 otherwise:

1: 1030/8000 = 12.875%
2: 16/8000 = 0.2% (cumulative 2-2: 16/8000 = 0.2%)
3: 52/8000 = 0.65% (cumulative 2-3: 68/8000 = 0.85%)
4: 115/8000 = 1.4375% (cumulative 2-4: 183/8000 = 2.2875%)
5: 205/8000 = 2.5625% (cumulative 2-5: 388/8000 = 4.85%)
6: 322/8000 = 4.025% (cumulative 2-6: 710/8000 = 8.875%)
7: 466/8000 = 5.825% (cumulative 2-7: 1176/8000 = 14.7%)
8: 607/8000 = 7.5875% (cumulative 2-8: 1783/8000 = 22.2875%)
9: 697/8000 = 8.7125% (cumulative 2-9: 2480/8000 = 31.0%)
10: 733/8000 = 9.1625% (cumulative 2-10: 3213/8000 = 40.1625%)
11: 715/8000 = 8.9375% (cumulative 2-11: 3928/8000 = 49.1%)
12: 643/8000 = 8.0375% (cumulative 2-12: 4571/8000 = 57.1375%)
13: 517/8000 = 6.4625% (cumulative 2-13: 5088/8000 = 63.6%)
14: 367/8000 = 4.5875% (cumulative 2-14: 5455/8000 = 68.1875%)
15: 241/8000 = 3.0125% (cumulative 2-15: 5696/8000 = 71.2%)
16: 142/8000 = 1.775% (cumulative 2-16: 5838/8000 = 72.975%)
17: 70/8000 = 0.875% (cumulative 2-17: 5908/8000 = 73.85%)
18: 25/8000 = 0.3125% (cumulative 2-18: 5933/8000 = 74.1625%)
19: 7/8000 = 0.0875% (cumulative 2-19: 5940/8000 = 74.25%)
20: 1030/8000 = 12.875% (cumulative 2-20: 6970/8000 = 87.125%)

Some specific comparisons for common DCs:

DC 10: 4490/8000 = 56.125% (with 1d20: 11/20 = 55.0%)
DC 11: 3757/8000 = 46.9625% (with 1d20: 10/20 = 50.0%)
DC 12: 3042/8000 = 38.025% (with 1d20: 9/20 = 45.0%)
DC 13: 2399/8000 = 29.9875% (with 1d20: 8/20 = 40.0%)
DC 14: 1882/8000 = 23.525% (with 1d20: 7/20 = 35.0%)
DC 15: 1515/8000 = 18.9375% (with 1d20: 6/20 = 30.0%)
DC 16: 1274/8000 = 15.925% (with 1d20: 5/20 = 25.0%)
DC 17: 1132/8000 = 14.15% (with 1d20: 4/20 = 20.0%)
DC 18: 1062/8000 = 13.275% (with 1d20: 3/20 = 15.0%)
DC 19: 1037/8000 = 12.9625% (with 1d20: 2/20 = 10.0%)
DC 20: 1030/8000 = 12.875% (with 1d20: 1/20 = 5.0%)

So, averaging is strictly worse for all DCs greater than 10.
>>
>>24795742
We really don't have time to deal with a prisoner. We need to get to the rapids and hope that this delay hasn't cost us our friend. Call out to the Mer to spare him and take him prisoner if they would.
>>
>>24795822
Oh come on, it's not like the excess weight will slow us any more than we already are slowed by lugging around a giant snake.

Also I don't trust the mer with prisoners. They may be distant relatives, but most of our relatives aren't the forgiving types.

and less than 19, I meant to say. But DC 19 or DC 20 almost never comes up; we don't have any among our normal actions, for instance.

...and that's entirely enough metagaming for one day.

I think it's a fairly clear argument for going back to 1d20, though.
>>
>>24795861
our friend will have that information. And all this guy will know is his orders.
>>
>>24795742
Ask him, quickly, if there's any way to save corrupted Mer, and what the forces will be like at the rapids. Then leave him to the Mer.
>>
>>24795794
"Get the hell away from the water then, you madman. Also get to dropping your weapons on the way, you'll be treated better without weapons."

"Serpent!" One of the Mer calls out. "These men have killed us, taken us, harried us at every turn. We do not allow weakness of mercy. Those who attack Mer die. No exceptions! Blood for blood!"

It's obvious that if the guy leaves the sand bank, or goes for one of the fallen weapons, or makes a break for it, the mer are going to kill him. Right now they're just savoring his panic as he's unable to do anything but look around helplessly.
>>
>>24795878
Back up plans and multiple sources are never bad, he may have also heard something from the mages.
>>
He specifically asked us to not let them kill him.

Because the mer will totally kill him.
>>
>>24795899
see this is why you always attack the paladin, and not her charges.

Because the paladin is allowed to forgive you if you attack the paladin. If you attack other people, though, they're not nearly as forgiving. Because they're not paladins.

>>
>>24795899
The man surrendered to me. As a paladin, I cannot allow you to kill him. He will be taken into my custody and will be punished for his crimes after he gives up any information he has. Information that could lessen his punishment (address last sentence to the hunter)
>>
>>24795935
>>24795939
I would take the prisoner if it was up to me, but we weren't the ones harmed, it was the mers. The best we can do is convince them of the values of mercy.

Which basically means the guy is dead.
>>
>>24795961
We don't need to say the last part of that; the lessened punishment is not dying.
>>
>>24795939
"We need information from him to save others. He is not likely to give that information if he knows he'll die either way."

The Mer looks at the man. "Yes, you are right. He may know where the others are. We can make him talk." He says. "We wont need much...just a broken seashell." He looks at you. "We mer are VERY creative."
>>
>>24795976
>A broken seashell

>>24795976
"A man being tortured will say anything to make it stop; that is not a source of reliable information."

I think we should, perhaps, get any messages this man wants to get to a loved one from him.

Because even if we move to save him, he'll be shredded by approximately 70 mermen.
>>
>>24795976
"So here's the question, Mr. Hunter, either you talk freely with me or I just give you to the Mer and get my answers from them afterwords because I'm in a bit in a hurry you see so make your decision very quickly."

Yes, not very paladin. Honestly, it is more threat than anything. Plus, we are in a hurry.

>>
>>24795976

>>
>>24796017
If he actually does have any family, that might actually work here. I don't actually deeply care if the Mer kill him; he does fairly clearly deserve it, and given that they're the ones he wronged, by rights it should be their justice he receives. I just want to get what we can out of him, and prevent him from being tortured.

>>24796046
Or three.
>>
>>24795991
"A man being tortured will say anything to make it stop; that is not a source of reliable information."

"That is true, however, we do not become creative to get information." The mer says. "We will merely begin, and not stop...and we will not care WHAT he says. Then when we DO finally ask the questions, we know that they are unable to lie."

"The man surrendered to me. As a paladin, I cannot allow you to kill him. He will be taken into my custody and will be punished for his crimes after he gives up any information he has."

"We demand blood." The mer says. "No one attacks mer without paying for it! That is our way. He took lives! Souls! Worse!"
>>
>>24795976
I'm pretty sure they're trying to play the "bad cop" to our "good cop". I say we play along.
>>
>>24796099
Or they just want him to die.
>>
>>24796077
So, would this work:

"Then have your blood", cut off the man's arm into the water, hoist him over shoulder and leave? It has a nice rhyming scheme with what happened to donovan.

Though, it could also piss off all the mermen. And leave an armless man. And would basically be hardcore as fuck on our part.
>>
>>24796077
Yes he did, and you deserve your justice. But the true culprit isn't him. Its who gave his orders. And it they who we want to pay the most.

>>
>>24796119
Whichever it is, we can use it to our advantage to get the info. If he doesn't cooperate? To the Mer he goes. He plays nice and helps save the others? We'll see what we can work out.

"I don't know anything about them. The Agonies just put them with us and gave them orders!" He pants. "As for my employers..." He shakes his head. "You don't understand...this has been decreed by His Light as what must happen. The monsters will purge those who's taint has corrupted Citadel. They are the antibodies to sin and evil. That is why He allows them to exist! And now that there is rain in Citadel, the disaster of the collapse of the great layered street...and the rupture of the sewers causing the stench...they are needed now more than ever. They are being purified, and then they will go on their duty, and then when their need is over, they shall be reclaimed by His Light and be given life anew...as part of the beauty of the Citadel!" Well, that's all we're going to get out of him. We could ask him who the Prophet / Messenger of Light is, but as I recall, Peace already went by that alias once.

In any case, I think, by rights, the Mer have the strongest claim to seek justice from him; we have no right to demand that he be given to the justice systems of Stone Hall or Bronze Peak or similar. At best, I think we can demand that he not be tortured, and offer to take a message for him. Beyond that would be overstepping.

"Let me guess, the false prophet wore a mask similar to the Agonies. I would bet it was a Peace mask."

"Have you seen the Messenger too?" He asks.

You look at Lea. She shakes her head. "I'm done being mad about this. The man has allowed himself to follow a false light, and unlike Adahn, he chose it of his own free will. Just as the teachings say, Evil is a choice." She puts a hand on your arm though. "But remember...you made him a promise, and you are a Paladin...you are NOT the Little Dragon."

>>24796771
We told him to get away from the water, and that he'd be treated better without weapons, and we endeavored to prevent him from being tortured.

And by what rights do we deprive the Mer of justice? By what right should he face a trial in Stone Hall rather than the Mer?

>>24796844
Not our best choice of wording. That's why I suggested at the time that we really couldn't promise him that. And in any case, even if he does face Stone Hall's justice, nothing says he wouldn't be executed there either.

Nonetheless, we're a bit stuck with it at the moment. That wording *could* be taken as a promise.
>>
>>24796915
>We can explain how this messenger has caused the rape of women and children, the near destruction of purple sands and stone hall. That they will do worse to see their idea of Citadel continue.

We're not going to convert him in a few minutes, and if we did what good would it do?
>>
Alright we take him with us, and let him rot in prison after the rapids. Grab him and bind him.

Tell the Mer that the Mansion is abandoned and the Salt Queens captured. We arrived too late to save them. We suggest finding another place for refuge.
>>

>>24796931
yeah, what we need to be doing now is thinking about the mer. They're pissed at this.

What do we do about them?
>>
>>24796931
We could have them work for penance instead of death. His life can end now and instead he can help others. We're in a spot, and I'm trying to resolve it according to or tenants.
>>
>>24796771
idea, cut off one of his hands/make him bleed nonlethally and take him prisoner for indefinite jail/justice, it should sate the Mer's need for blood.

If it does not, we remind the Mer that they marched under the same master as him just a short while ago. What right did they have to march towards Stone Hall with the intent of sacking it, with the same lies being whispered in their ears as the ones told to this man.
>>
>>24796771
"What would you propose, Lea? By what rights should he face justice in Stone Hall rather than here from the Mer? The Mer are the ones he attacked. And what would be the difference in his treatment?"

One possible approach with the Mer, though:

"You demand a death for a death. I propose a life for a life. I aim to save the corrupted Mer if at all possible, and this man's information on their whereabouts may make it possible to do so. He will, at best, spend the rest of his life in prison rather than dying here. Does that seem unfair to you somehow?"

I retract my suggestion in favor of this brilliant one. Show them the logical conclusion of their unyielding approach to justice.

"You lost no blood!" The mer snarls. He looks at you...but you've stared down Old One. This little fish isn't worth your time. He folds. "We will not forget this lamia." He says. "You saved us from one death, and thus we were driven into another. This life will be yours...but do not look to the mer any more for tides or time. And tell Dana that she is no longer welcome either. She is yours now...and we would DARE not touch what is YOURS...take your murderer." The mer turns his back on you and the remaining mer leave.

"They are not going to be happy with us for a long time." Mage says.

"That or a very violent short time." Mari says. "Mer have strange thought processes."

Lea pats you on the shoulder. "Well done, Paladin."

I don't think taking "blood for blood" literally will help. They said "Those who attack Mer die."

True, though we don't yet have a clue what to do about the corrupted Mer we'll face there. I'm really hoping that the Agony masks might be enough to help us somehow. I really don't want to have to kill them.

...wait a minute, idea. The mages here were the ones casting the spells to corrupt the Mer. Have our prisoner tell us the names of all the mages, and Mage can try to take control of the spell from them.

The problem is that they have an ARMY at the Grove. I have no idea how we are going to get past that to get to Comedy.

Lea puts him to sleep.

You look at Lea as she ties him up. "Next time I start to promise a murderer asylum from one justice system into another, please stop me. I had no right to do anything more than prevent his torture." You say.

"Understood."

"Oh, and feel free to punch me if needed to get the point across."

Lea smiles. "Gotcha."

Tricia sighs dejectedly. "The rapids are deserted. There's signs of fights and people having been there, but there's no one present...same with the village. The blanks are gone, and if Ryan was at any of the sites, then he's long taken off."

"Great." Peri says. "Now we have to deal with masks who are competent."

"Maybe we should rename Stone Hall. It represent our break from Citadel." Peri says.

"You don't want that." Mari says. "Because if we did, then he who rules Stone Hall would be the one to rename it. I am NOT living in Isenopolis, or Mt. Isen if he renames Bronze Peak!"

"So I suppose we aren't swinging by home. Are we?" Tricia asks.

Before we leave this area, let's check around and see if there are any dead Mer, and start following Old One's instructions for developing mind protection. I see no harm in doing so; it won't make them any deader.

"We can't stay there, but they might be at risk from the nearby White Tree; we should likely take the path through there, but unfortunately it would cost lives to stop if there's no immediate threat."

Onward to White Tree, passing through River's Crossing but not stopping unless there's imminent danger.

ugh. I'm more feeling bad that we'll have to fight lamias. They're like, made of poison. I'm going to suggest we go and get cannons if they have anything bigger than, say, a minotaur.

I'd agree if such things were not strictly the purview of naval warfare...it'd probably weigh 10 tons and take 10 minutes to reload. Naval guns are big.

Maybe they have, like, wheeled cannons?

Nah, probably not. I wish we had gotten a few of barney's more dangerous designs made up.

Once more, you encounter no troubles on the road. You do hear from fellow travelers that the Ghoul remnants that had been raiding have disappeared. Not that they've been killed, or wiped out, or anything like that...they've just disappeared.

River's Crossing is as the same as ever. Caravans and river trade. Wendy's actually changed her route. She's now doing the trek to Stone Hall and back. It's riskier, but she's making a lot more money now. Other than that, people have been the same as always.

Tricia does make a quick stop to see her parents. She comes back, she's wiping her eyes.

"We talked about...stuff." She sighs. "They're not...there yet...but they're okay with it." She sighs. "It'll take some time." She leans on your shoulder. "But they're just glad I'm not bad crazy." She smiles as the road bumps along as she leans on you. "Things are getting pretty messed up aren't they? The whole impending monster thing, Uncle Julian getting captured, Robin, Ryan, and Jessi captured and masked, and apparently things are getting worse and worse in Citadel." She sighs. "You think we're ever going to get another moment where it's just quiet? I mean where we can just take a moment to realize all the crap that's happened to us. Not to mention all the other...ugh...I'm babbling." She sighs.
>>

Should we leave the prisoner with Tricia's dad?
>>
>>24798224

The prisoner is loaded up, and prepared with another treatment from Lea. Along with a note from you for Wendy to give to Avery, detailing the man's crimes and how he's to be jailed and then tried. If executed, preferably by the water.

"You have to teach me to do that." Mari says.

"It's all in the positioning." Lea says. "You can cause a dramatic amount of damage with just a little bit of force at the right spots."

Paladins Gather For Fey Court Crisis
- - -
It's a propaganda piece, just showing the solidarity of the Paladins in this time of trouble and concern. Apparently they've been gathering at Citadel, and someone drew a picture of the event.

And apparently, you, Avery, and Balles were in attendance...although you're in that stupid armor that's begging for a broken sternum, Balles has his spectacles twice as big and thick with buck teeth, and Avery has a beer mug and foam in his beard.

"Paladin Donne left two days ago for that summit." Frederick says.

Paladin Donne was the Green Occuli Paladin who helped protect the fields...he's on the longer list Balles gave you.

"So, why are you here? Shouldn't you be in Citadel?"

In any case, I do indeed have a crisis to deal with, but it would do no good to meet about it without the necessary means of doing something about it, and for that I need to visit the Conclave. I thank you for bringing this to my attention, though; may I keep this?"

"In any case, I do indeed have a crisis to deal with, but it would do no good to meet about it without the necessary means of doing something about it, and for that I need to visit the Conclave. I thank you for bringing this to my attention, though; may I keep this?"

Frederick nods. "Yeah, ok, of course. So...why'd you leave Citadel then?"

"Citadel is the brightest beacon of light on the continent; why would a Caligo Clarus like myself be found there?" You say, your voice dripping with more poisonous sarcasm than ever.

"Right. That makes sense." Frederick says.

"So...the Conclave?" You say. "I do need to go visit it to help fight the Fey."

"Oh, right right..." Frederick goes and opens the gate. "Okay. Go and give those bastards a good one right in their ears!" He waves as the wagon goes through.

"Ladies and Gentlemen." Peri says as you stable Lightmare. "White Tree's greatest, staunchest, most capable guardian." She says. "You could fire arrows at him all day...and still never pierce through that thick skull of his."

>people not wanting to go

But we can rally the paladins to do... something!

Whatever our crazy plan this time is!

>>24799133
We got other shit to do
>>24799130
At least he doesn't seem quite so racist anymore
>>
>>24799130
Amen.
>>
>>24799133
>Wanting to go back to Citadel without the means to utterly destroy it
>>
>>24799133
People not wanting to go near Citadel where people would want to lynch us for making it rain. We have other things to deal with before we can confront Citadel directly.

>>24799158
>At least he doesn't seem quite so racist anymore

He did seem to rather rapidly do a 180 on that as soon as we actually became a Paladin. Surprising that he remains that way even while many others are decrying us as a false Paladin.
>>
>>24799130
"Well, at least he gave us some information. Also reminded me what a terrible choice that painting thing was."
>>
>>24799130
I kind of feel sorry for the poor guy. I mean i know he's a racist prick and all but i have a feeling that being utterly retarded probably has a LOT to do with many of his flaws.
>>
>>24799197
yeah. I personally like him, and am glad I'm fighting for him. Lovable dope. Remember how surprised these guys were that we could talk?
>>
>>24799212
"Well, at least he gave us some information. Also reminded me what a terrible choice that painting thing was."

"We'll make sure we burn all of those when we...do whatever we're going to do to Citadel." Mari says as you go up the Conclave steps.

"I'm a little worried." Lea says. "Avery and Balles not withstanding, what does it mean that all the Paladins are in Citadel now?"

"Nothing good." Tricia says.

"One fire at a time." Mari says knocking on the door. "I wonder who the new Overseer is, now that Trivalon's been caught."
>>
>>24799227

I would argue that he's more a product of his environment than anything else. For thousands of years, anything that's not human is either a cliche'd fantasy race or a monster. Simple racial diametrics.

And simple diametrics are a fucking BREEDING GROUND for bigotry. I suspect that even after Citadel is dust there'll be fools like him all around the world.

Millenia of sugarcoating doesn't come off in a day.
>>
>>24799130
Well, let's get ourselves over to the Conclave and see about getting that compass. And let's make sure Mari's body is OK, and see if Mari and Peri have anything they need to do about it while here. Have they made any progress about what they need to do to keep themselves sane? They mentioned previously that they needed some Conclave stuff, in addition to a focus stone which we haven't found yet.
>>
>>24799277
Citadel has me imagining worst-case scenarios, and here the first image that came to mind was Mari's body answering the door.
>>
>>24799309
oh, are we guessing who the guy there is?

THE MAGE STUDENT WHO TOOK A SWORD FOR WHEN WE CAME IN.

What's my prize?
>>
>>24799277
"If I recall, Jessi's note mentioned something about using Trevor when they 'repair' the Paladins. It sounds to me like they're preparing a purge."
>>
>>24799277

Knowing Citadel, it'll either be some Blood Knight nutcase with more muscles than brains, or another Knight Templar fool, like...er...

You know what? I've forgotten the bitch paladin's name.
>>
>>24799331
Odette.
>>
We are on page 10 now
>>
>>24799277
I was thinking we might want to give the paladins who are on our good list who went to the meeting a some suspicion as they could have been brainwashed. Only person in Citadel who I think is safe is HIS.
>>
>>24799346
oh crap, NEW THREAD FAST

Odette.

>>24799371
its not panic worth, we have been at the top of page 10 for like 10 minutes now, even stuff on the last page takes a while to get bumped off /tg/ at this time of night.
